Award Winning author, Lizzy Ford, gives us an emotional, sexy read with her first Sons of War novel, SEMPER MINE.
A Marine captain tortured by the death of his men in Iraq returns home and falls in love with the sister of one of the slain, who blames him for the massacre that killed her brother. ย SEMPER MINE, is a standalone novel in the Sons of War contemporary military romance series.
โA freak accident landed both of the Khavalov twins under my command, just before a routine mission turned into a nightmare. I brought home one twin in a coffin and the other in a coma missing his leg. I did everything right โ and still people died. I canโt forget that night or how many lives it changed, including mine.
Itโs natural for their sister, Katya, to blame me. I made one decision in the middle of a firefight, and it shattered her sheltered world. Iโm the ice to her fire, and when we first meet, itโs not pretty. I donโt fear war or death, and I am definitely not going to let a beautiful woman with a quick temper and broken heart scare me off, either. I know sheโs hurting, and Iโm determined to make sure sheโs okay. Itโs the least I can do for the twins.
I may have failed them that night, but I wonโt fail her. What Iโm not counting on: the feelings she ignites within me.โ โ Captain Sawyer Mathis

Excerpt:
I Hate This Man
Opening the door, I spot the dress uniform of a Marine and frown, then look up at him.
Dark hair and eyes, olive complexion, heavy jaw, tapered nose, full lips and a low brow. He smells clean and of some light, sweet cologne that reminds me of coconuts. Heโs got the lean physique and wide upper body of a swimmer that Iโd drool over, if he were any other man.
โYou,โ I hiss.
Captain Sawyer Mathis has an intensity and calmness around him that infuriates me,ย especially when I think of how detached and cold he was at Mikaelโs funeral, like saying
farewell to my brother was a chore. His brown eyes are on me. Heโs as handsome as he is good at taking out the men of my family. Why Petr and Baba like him, I have no idea.
โMaโam,โ he replies.
โYou here to make sure my other brother ends up six feet under?โ
โNo, maโam. Iโm here to check in on him.โ
โThese are family only visiting hours.โ I slam the door closed, or try to.
His foot is jammed in the door. โWith all due respect, maโam, your brothers saved myย life, which makes them more than family in my book.โ
โWith all due respect, Captain, I think youโve done enough for my family.โ
I swing the door open, realizing his foot isnโt about to budge. Planting my hands on myย hips, Iโm not about to move from the doorway.
Seeing him reminds me too much of Mikael and how Iโll never see my brother again. Iโllย be damned if Iโm going to let the man who got Mikael killed come near my Petr.
Captain Mathisโ jaw is clenched. Iโm not sure what he can be thinking, but he sure as hell isnโt expressing anything that makes me think heโs more human than he was at Mikaelโs funeral. I donโt know why he bothered showing up that day.
โIf you want in, youโll have to move me out of the way,โ I tell him.
โYou canโt weigh more than one thirty. Iโve carried packs heavier than you.โ His gazeย sweeps over me. โIโll be out of your way in five minutes, maโam,โ he adds calmly. โBut Iย wonโt leave until I get that five minutes with your brother.โ
โViolence and threats are the weapons of choice, I see. Guess it comes naturally toย someone who thinks invading some sovereign country over oil and getting innocent people killed is the right thing to do.โ
A flare of something crosses his gaze and vanishes quickly. โAnd I imagine you thinkย saving the whales is more important than funding the equipment people like your brothers needed to stay alive in a hostile environment.โ
โThere wouldnโt be a hostile environment if we had a policy of peace rather than war,โ I
point out.
โI didnโt start the war, maโam, but I will win it so people like you can maintain your wayย of life.โ
โYou arenโt going to win if you keep killing off your own men!โ God, what an asshole!
We glare at one another, the air between us charged and thick. I hit a nerve with him and sense it. Iโm happy for it. I hate this man, because he came back when my Mikael didnโt. Not even Captain Mathisโ thick biceps and broad chest can make up for him being what he is: the representation of everything I despise about the military and war that took my brother away.
โStep aside, maโam.โ The order is gravelly, low and quiet in the resolute tone of a natural leader. It cuts through my anger. His gaze is piercing. Heโs not like my brothers and father. Heโs not backing down.
