Yes & I Love You

by Roni Loren

Publication Date: 3/2/2021

Blurb:

Everyone knows Miz Poppy, the vibrant reviewer whose commentary brightens the New Orleans nightlife. But no one knows Hollyn Tate, the real face behind the media starโ€ฆor the anxiety that keeps her isolated. All her life, Hollynโ€™s tried to hide her true self behind an online faรงade, but when her boss tells her she needs to reveal the truth to the world or lose her job, sheโ€™s forced to rely on an unexpected source to help face her fears.

Enter Jasper Deares: actor, newly minted fake boyfriend, and way, way out of her league. Hollyn thinks Jasper must be joking when he offers private lessons to help overcome her fears. Getting up on a stage? Hello, worst nightmare. But Jasperโ€™s infectious charm has her saying yes despite herself. Theyโ€™re only supposed to be playing a few improv games, but as the lessons run longer and the lines grow blurrier, Hollyn canโ€™t help but wonder if sheโ€™s acting at allโ€ฆor if a relationship with Jasper might help give her the confidence she needs to say yes to every imperfect part of herself.

Excerpt:

Jasper remained hunched in the passenger seat, half-turned to the side, asย Hollynย pulled onto the road and made her way to I-10. She was sweating now, too, and her fingers were tapping a four count on the steering wheel. She was probably supposed to talk to distract him. That was what people did in these situations, right? Sheโ€™d seen those kinds of scenes in movies.ย

โ€œThis wonโ€™t take long,โ€ she said, not looking his way. โ€œFifteen minutes tops. Maybe you just have food poisoning or something.โ€ย

โ€œRight.โ€ย

โ€œOr maybe your organs are going to explode.โ€ย

He made a choked sound, but then she realized he was laughingโ€”or at least attempting to in between whatever pain he was dealing with. โ€œGee, doc, you really know how to delicately lay out my condition.โ€ย

โ€œMy sympathy meter for you is low right now.โ€ย

He lifted his glasses and rubbed his eyes. โ€œI know. Iโ€™m really sorry. Like really, epically sorry.โ€ย

โ€œWhatever.โ€ย

A few seconds of silence passed and he looked over at her. โ€œCan you keep talking? Even if itโ€™s just to tell me what an ass I am. Anything to distract me from this stabbing pain.โ€ย

Keep talking.ย The plea made her throat want to close up, Jasperโ€™s attention on her too intense. She could feel her tics ramping up. โ€œI donโ€™t know what else to say. Ask me something.โ€ย

โ€œFavorite color.โ€ย

She wet her lips. โ€œBlue.โ€ย

โ€œWhatโ€™s your last name?โ€ย

โ€œTate. Yours?โ€ย

โ€œDeares.โ€ย

She turned to look at him.ย โ€œDearest?ย Like your mom is Mommy Dearest?โ€ย

He sniffed derisively. โ€œItโ€™sย Dearesย without the T. And thatโ€™s an old joke,ย Hollynย Tate.โ€ย

โ€œNot to me.โ€ She felt the corners of her mouth hitch up a little. โ€œJasper Dearest. I soundย like your 1950s wife calling you to come to the dinner table and eat your pot roast.โ€ย

Oh God, did I say that out loud?ย I just called myself his wife.ย

He snorted. โ€œToo bad your name isnโ€™tย Hollynย Darling. We could get our own retro TV show.โ€ย

The tight feeling in her chest eased a little. โ€œIโ€™d have to learn to make pot roast.โ€ย

โ€œNot a food blogger then, huh?โ€ He leaned back against the headrest and closed his eyes. โ€œWhat do you do? My moneyโ€™s on CIA operative.โ€ย

She focused on his profile for a moment, which was oddly compelling, the slight bump in his nose somehow making him that much more interesting to look atโ€”imperfectly handsome. She turned her attention back to the road. She didnโ€™t need to be thinking about his nose or how handsome he was.ย Asshole, remember?ย โ€œI do a lot of freelance writing, but not about food. Mostly about movies and entertainment.โ€ย

โ€œI love movies. You like your job?โ€ย

โ€œMostly, but itโ€™s a lot of scrambling. Iโ€™m hoping to find a full-time position one of these days. You know the magical kind that comesย with insurance and a steady paycheck?โ€ย

โ€œJobs like that exist?โ€ He shifted in his seat and let out a soft grunt of pain.ย

โ€œIโ€™ve heard rumors.โ€ย

โ€œFascinating.โ€ He reached out and angled the air-conditioning vent toward him.ย

She took a breath, trying to settle into the rhythm of the conversation. โ€œSoย you do coffee and improv.โ€ย

โ€œYeah. And Iโ€™m going to teach some classes atย WorkAround.โ€ย

โ€œOn how to trash your coworkers?โ€ย

Jasperโ€™s head turned her way again. โ€œOuch.โ€ย

She didnโ€™t look over at him. No way was she apologizing. She needed to remember she was mad, that heโ€™d been a jerk. Not get distracted by his hotness or his struggling-actor state.ย

โ€œLook,ย Hollyn,โ€ he said, his voice quiet. โ€œIโ€™m truly sorry. What you saw tonightโ€ฆthat isnโ€™t the spirit of our show.โ€ He paused and took a ragged breath, like the speech was a lot of work. โ€œI made a mistake. The serial-killer thing naturally brought my mind to Andi, and I bet if you asked her, she wouldnโ€™t have taken what I said seriously. When I talked to her, she made fun of her own obsession. She embraces her weirdness.โ€ย

โ€œRight,โ€ย Hollynย said, jaw tightening. โ€œSoย I should just be cool with being made fun of.ย Iโ€™m the one whoโ€™s too sensitive. Got it.โ€ย

โ€œGod, no,โ€ he said with frustration. โ€œIโ€™m saying I was a dick to use you in the monologue, and Iโ€™m sorry. I didnโ€™t know about your tics. I just thought you were annoyed with me.โ€ย

Her grip tightened on the steering wheel as she took the exit for Canal Street, and she inhaled a deep breath. โ€œIโ€™ve grown out of the worst of them but they flare up when Iโ€™mโ€ฆnervous.โ€ย

She could feel him watching her, and her fingers tapped more quickly.ย

โ€œSoย I made you nervous?โ€ he asked.ย

โ€œYes.โ€ย

He frowned in her periphery. โ€œWhy?โ€ย

She rubbed her lips together, not liking this line of questioning at all.ย Because you were funny and boy beautiful and have the sexiest smirk.ย โ€œIโ€™m not great with new people.โ€ย

He shifted in the seat again. โ€œGood thing Iโ€™m not new anymore. You can relax now.โ€ย

She glanced over. The guy looked like hell. Flushed and sweating. But his eyes had a little spark of invitation in them.ย

โ€œYouโ€™re still exceptionally new,โ€ she said. โ€œCellophane wrapped with the price tag still on.โ€ย

โ€œNope. The sealโ€™s been broken. Weโ€™ve texted. You helped me limp off a city street. Hey, weโ€™ve even had our first fight and planned our TV show,ย Hollynย Darling. Iโ€™m no longer new to you.โ€ He winced and gripped his side. โ€œWeโ€™re old friends now.โ€ย

She stared at him for a moment, part of her wishing it could be true. But who was she kidding? One, how could she trust that any interaction they had wasnโ€™t going to turn into material? And two, sheโ€™d been fooling herself when sheโ€™d thought theyโ€™d been flirting. Jasper was a comedian. Funny quips were his business. Charm was his currency. Sheโ€™d read the whole situation wrong. โ€œWeโ€™re not friends, Jasper.โ€
