Sticking to the Script

Cipher Office series

by Stella Weaver

Blurb:

Steven Thompson had a bad year. A string of mean, kinky (the alarming kind, not the good kind), and crazy dating debacles combined with a boss who appears to be experiencing male-prenatal-psychosis means Stevenโ€™s stress levels are high. Theyโ€™re so high, heโ€™s decided to quit dating and focus instead solely on his job.

Until he meets Dr. Ken Miles.

Doctor Ken Miles is having a fantastic year. His hard work is paying off in a big way . . . professionally. But his social life? Not so much.

Until he meets Steven Thompson.

Steven isnโ€™t so sure about Dr. Miles, but Ken is one hundred percent certain about Mr. Thompson. And even though both men know full well that the key to getting what you want out of life is hard work, they canโ€™t seem to make themโ€”togetherโ€”work.

Will they ever get on the same page? Or just keep sticking to the same old script?

‘Sticking to the Script’ is a full-length contemporary romantic comedy, can be read as a standalone, and is book#2 in the Cipher Office series, Knitting in the City World, Penny Reid Book Universe.

Excerpt:

โ€œHe asked you to a movie?โ€ She blinked, nonplussed.

โ€œWho are we talking about?โ€ Nico asked, leaning around Elizabeth to look at me. His green eyes held a mischievous twinkle, no doubt eager to hear a new chapter of farce and lunacy in Stevenโ€™s Big Book of Dating Disasters.

โ€œKen Miles,โ€ I replied.

Nicoโ€™s twinkle and dimple disappeared. Whether Elizabeth disliked Ken or not, I was sure Nico loathed the man. I couldnโ€™t blame him; it was his prerogative to hate men who used to lust after his wife. He arched one raven eyebrow and asked, โ€œHowโ€™d that come about?โ€

โ€œYeah,โ€ Elizabeth said. โ€œHow, Steven?โ€ Her tone was curious, but I thought I detected a little tinge of disapproval that I didnโ€™t like.

Not wanting to make an issue of anything, I replied with an easy nonchalance. โ€œI ran into him at Buzzyโ€™s. We started talking about Mystery Science Theater 3000โ€”โ€

โ€œThat showโ€™s a riot,โ€ Nico asserted, reaching for his fritter. โ€œThe reboot is pretty good, too.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s what I told DKM.โ€ I took Nicoโ€™s lead and grabbed my own heavenly pastry.

โ€œThen, when he found out the movie was playing at the Music Box,โ€ he asked me if I wanted to see it. So, we went.โ€ I shrugged.

โ€œThereโ€™s a movie?โ€ Nico asked. โ€œHow did I not know this?โ€

I mumbled around my fritter bite, โ€œYouโ€™re not missing much.โ€

โ€œStinker, eh?โ€

โ€œLittle bit.โ€ I shrugged again. That had been two, overly casual shrugs in just a few seconds and I worried I was playing it too cool. Elizabethโ€™s powers of observation surpassed my own. If I wasnโ€™t careful, sheโ€™d have me giving her every last detail of the evening.

โ€œSo,โ€ she broke in. โ€œAre you thinking this might have been like, you know, a date?โ€ Her brows were drawn together in concern, her words tentative.

I tilted my head in stern exasperation. โ€œPuh-leeze. The man didnโ€™t know who McSteamy was. I got the memo that heโ€™s straight.โ€

โ€œWhoโ€™s McSteamy?โ€ Nico asked.

I pursed my lips together, raised my eyebrows and gestured to Nico. โ€œI rest my case.โ€

Elizabeth laughed. โ€œIโ€™m sorry, I just didnโ€™t want you getting the wrong idea or anything. Heโ€™sโ€โ€”she looked at her husband in apologyโ€”โ€œheโ€™s very good-looking, and I could see how asking you to a movie could get your hopes up.โ€

โ€œNah,โ€ I waved dismissively. โ€œI know whatโ€™s up. But I think we could hang out,โ€ I volunteered without thinking. I instantly regretted my slip.

โ€œGood luck with that,โ€ Nico said with a laugh.

โ€œWe had a good time. Heโ€™s kind of funny,โ€ I defended.

โ€œNot possible,โ€ he declared. Nico was a comedian, and a very successful one at that. He knew what was funny and wasnโ€™t about to give the odious Dr. Miles any benefit of the doubt where humor was concerned.

Inexplicable annoyance spurred me to continue. โ€œI think I might make hanging out with him a regular thing.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t think a stiff like that knows how to have fun.โ€

Elizabeth grimaced at her husbandโ€™s uncharacteristic snark, then issued me a sympathetic smile. โ€œWell, it will be good for Dr. Ken Miles. Heโ€™s not the most colorful person in the city, thatโ€™s for sure. Maybe youโ€™ll broaden his horizons.โ€
