Excerpt:
Keaganβs ladder leaned against the roof of the front porch. When heΒ saw her, he called, βThe paintβs already dry up here. If you bring me theΒ shutters you painted, Iβll put them up at the two windows.β
She gave him a thumbs-up and almost ran to the barn. Heβd asked her,Β not one of the others, to help him. She hurried to grab a pair of shutters.Β When she got back, heβd come down for them and jammed a screwdriverΒ and screws in his jeans pocket. Then he scurried up to the porch roof andΒ stood on that to work. Karli squirmed. The porch roof slanted downwardΒ and didnβt look safe to her.
βBe careful,β she said.
He gave her a look. βIβve been balancing on a ladder to paint the peaks allΒ day. I think Iβll survive this.β
She went to get the shutters for the second window and climbed a fewΒ rungs to hand them to him. Once heβd finished installing them, he startedΒ down. Heβd reached the ground when Karli noticed someoneβs paintΒ brush lying on the roof. She scrambled up the ladder to reach it and thenΒ carefully retraced her steps. Before she reached the bottom, though, twoΒ strong hands lifted her and set her on the ground. Keaganβs touch sentΒ heat through her fleece hoodie.
She turned and found herself toe to toe with him. His solid chest was eye level. She looked up at his strong jawline, his lips. She sucked in herΒ breath and tilted her head, staring up into his cobalt-blue eyes. She couldΒ smell his scentβclean and manly. His gaze burned with intensity. HerΒ lips parted. One more inch and sheβd be pressing against himβ¦
