Sheβll love him forever . . . but he canβt make her obey . . .
The war is over. Danger has passed. Cara Kayrs is healed after decades of illness and ready for a break.
Too bad her brooding, alpha vampire husband canβt seem to change gears. In their twenty-five years together Talen Kayrs has learned to sense every shiver of her body, to ignite her desire with a word or a look. She would think he could learn sheβs not some fragile damsel in distress.
But Talen is on edge, watching their backs, treating her like sheβs made of glass. Like thereβs something following them, a deadly threat that somehow none of their intelligence has uncovered. Itβs enough to drive a woman crazy, and Talen has plenty of those tendencies already.
But whatβs even more maddening is that he seems to be right . . .

Excerpt:
Talen couldnβt shake the itch between his shoulder blades. TakingΒ his mate from the safety of their headquarters didnβt set well withΒ him, and his muscles tensed in one long line.
βWould you relax?β she whispered from the passenger seat, herΒ head back on the leather and her eyes closed in pleased abandonment.
Her legs were up on the dash, her feet in little sandals thatΒ showed off bright pink toenails. Sexy and pink. Her long auburn hairΒ cascaded over her shoulders, and he fought the urge to tug on aΒ strand.
The woman was right. The war had ended, and he really did needΒ to relax. He watched the road outside and yet kept a close eye on hisΒ woman out of his peripheral vision. βIt occurs to me that you thinkΒ things have changed.β
She opened her eyelids then . . . her eyes a stunning blue. βHuh?β
He cleared his throat and made sure her seat belt was firmlyΒ around her small body. βThe war is over, youβre well, and you thinkΒ things are different.β In fact, his woman hadnβt been healthy sinceΒ right after theyβd mated, and for years, heβd been more than gentleΒ with her. At the thought that she was whole, finally, his heart startedΒ to thrum.
βOf course things are different.β She gestured out with one arm.
βWeβre on a road trip, without guards, without death hanging overΒ our heads.β Her laugh was throaty and full. βEmma and I are takingΒ a Vegas trip next month for a girlsβ weekend.β
βAbsolutely not.β
She gaped. βI did not ask permission, Kayrs.β
He bit back a wince. Whenever Cara used his last name, he wasΒ about to end up in the doghouse. Yet she was no longer vulnerable orΒ weak, and he was finished placating her. βMate? I have no intentionΒ of allowing you to go anywhere for a girlsβ anything.β The second theΒ word allow was out of his mouth, the tension in the car ratcheted upΒ several degrees.
βOh, you did not,β she sputtered, her eyes narrowing.
He sighed and turned to pin her with a look. Heβd forgotten herΒ stubbornness in the last difficult years when sheβd been fighting aΒ deadly virus that had almost taken her life. Now that she was healthy,Β memories of their first months together, before she had becomeΒ infected, filtered through his mind. βI was fairly certain I tamed youΒ way back when,β he said thoughtfully.
Red infused her face. βIβm about to kick your ass, Kayrs.β
Maybe not. Interesting. At the thought, his entire body tightened,Β and his cock started to throb. βCara.β
Her shiver enticed him. βWhat?β
βI strongly advise you not to push me.β It was only fair to warnΒ her, and he went on instinct. After nearly dying when the war hadΒ ended, heβd been restless since. For so many years, heβd treated hisΒ mate with more gentleness than he wouldβve thought possible asΒ sheβd endured the virus.
Now that she was healthy, a primal part of him, one much closerΒ to the surface than he liked, wanted to claim her again with all theΒ dominance that was inherent to his species. βOkay?β
She breathed out. βOh, mate. Youβre the one who needs to stopΒ pushing.β
He reached out, catching the long strands of her hair before sheΒ could avoid him. Her eyes widened, and he twisted his wrist withΒ enough pressure to tilt back her head, fighting instincts heβd forgottenΒ he had.
Curiosity and desire spilled from her.
His nostrils flared, catching his mateβs scent. It had been too long since theyβd both been whole and healthy. Heβd forgotten her defiantΒ nature and how much she liked to challenge him. βMaybe this tripΒ was a good idea,β he said softly, the beast inside him raging as herΒ lids half-lowered.
