You, Again

The Elmwood Stories #1

by Lane Hayes

Blurb:

The hometown hockey hero and his best friendโ€™s brotherโ€ฆ

Vinnie

Hockey is in my blood. I learned to skate before I learned how to ride a bike. Iโ€™ve been on a wild ride, playing at the highest level for some of the biggest and best teams in the league. But now itโ€™s over, and Iโ€™m not sure what to do with myself.

So I’m going home to Elmwood.

But Iโ€™ll tell you what Iโ€™m not gonna doโ€”Iโ€™m not going to coach my buddyโ€™s junior hockey league. No chance. I donโ€™t know how to deal with kids, and besides, the other coachโ€”who happens to be my best friendโ€™s brotherโ€”hates me. With reason.

That may be old news, yet something tells me weโ€™re going to have to deal with the past.

And that’s almost as scary as coaching teens.

Nolan

No, I donโ€™t hate Vinnie, but he drives me nuts.

Heโ€™s cocky, goofy, selfish, and yeahโ€ฆafter all these years, Iโ€™m still attracted to him. But Iโ€™m a responsible adult now. I run my familyโ€™s business, and with the help of my ex, Iโ€™ve made Elmwood Diner into a New England institution.

So maybe my life isn’t particularly exciting at the moment, and maybe Vinnie isnโ€™t the worst. Nonetheless, I have no desire to rekindle a friendship with the hockey hero who no doubt will be on the first flight out of town the second he gets bored or gets a better offer.

And Iโ€™m not coaching with him. No way.

Ughโ€ฆ

I canโ€™t believe Iโ€™m doing this again.

You, Again is an MM bisexual, best friendโ€™s brother, frenemies to lovers romance featuring old friends, a new quest, and a little hockey HEA!

Excerpt:

Vinnie set a twenty on the table and stood. โ€œThanks for the coffee.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s on the house,โ€ I insisted, pushing the money toward him.

โ€œNo, no. I support local businesses. Keep the change.โ€

His over-the-top wink practically begged me to roll my eyes, but I had more to say. We had to clear the airโ€ฆat least a little.

โ€œUmโ€ฆhey, even if you donโ€™t make it through summer, your presence alone is good for business for the whole town. โ€˜NHL Hero Comes Homeโ€™ and all that bullshit. If you donโ€™t mind the attention, and Iโ€™m assuming you donโ€™tโ€”come help out at the rink. Itโ€™s easy and fun. You wonโ€™t regret it.โ€

Vinnie rubbed his scruffy jaw thoughtfully. โ€œOkay. Iโ€™ll do it.โ€

I smiled tentatively and raised my hand for a high five. โ€œGreat.โ€

โ€œBut only if youโ€™re my assistant.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€ I pulled my hand away before he could slap it, furrowing my brow. โ€œNo way. Gavin is perfectly capable ofโ€”โ€

โ€œNope. It has to be you.โ€

I frowned. โ€œWhy?โ€

โ€œ โ€™Causeโ€ฆโ€ Vinnie blew out an exasperated breath. โ€œI want to fix this. Me and you. And I canโ€™t do that if you ignore me.โ€

And just like that, the invisible wall between us shook in its foundation.

โ€œWeโ€™re fine,โ€ I bluffed.

Vinnie arched a brow. โ€œYouโ€™re mad at me. I know why, and I get it. We donโ€™t have to go into it now, but at the very least, we should call a truce โ€™cause if weโ€™re working with impressionable teens, you really oughtta be nice to me, Moore.โ€

My mouth opened in a perfect O. โ€œIโ€™ve been perfectly civil to you. More civil than you deserve, Kiminski.โ€

โ€œSee? That wasnโ€™t nice,โ€ he teasingly scolded. โ€œI canโ€™t believe Iโ€™m the voice of reason here.โ€

I fixed him with a bored sardonic stare. โ€œYou are never the voice of reason.โ€

โ€œI kind of am now.โ€

โ€œNo, you arenโ€™t.โ€

โ€œYes, I am.โ€

โ€œNo, youโ€”oh, my God.โ€ I pointed at the door. โ€œGood-bye, Vinnie.โ€

He snickered, flashing a lopsided devil-may-care grin my way. โ€œWait up. Letโ€™s seal the deal on this truce.โ€

โ€œOh, brother.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m serious. Letโ€™s shake hands, hug it out, kiss and make up, or all of the above.โ€

I regarded his outstretched hand suspiciously and cautiously slid my palm against his. โ€œFine. Truce.โ€

โ€œSee, that didnโ€™t sound friendly. You ruined it. Gimme a hug,โ€ he demanded, pulling me into a bear hug, squeezing me hard enough to crack a rib.

I let out an oomph of surprise and tried to wriggle out of his hold. He took the hint and loosened his grip. I knew it was all in good fun or at least meant to playfully rile me up, but when he bent to kiss my cheek, I turned my head just as he swooped in and bam! Our lips collided in an actual, honest-to-God kiss.

A fucking kiss.

I couldnโ€™t speak for Vinnie, but I was too shocked to move.

Weโ€™d been here before.

Sure, it had been almost twenty years ago, but I was positive neither of us was looking for a repeat. I certainly wasnโ€™t. Any second now, heโ€™d back up, swipe his hand across his mouth and make some ridiculous joke to right the balance. But he didnโ€™t.

He softened his lips and molded them to mine, tilting his chin as if testing a new angle. And suddenly, this felt real.

Oh, no.

Ohโ€ฆno.

I pushed out of his arms, sucking in a gulp of air.

Holy shit.

My heart beat like a drum, and my mouth was bone dry.

โ€œI thinkโ€”I think weโ€™re good now,โ€ I rasped.

Vinnieโ€™s shell-shocked expression gave way to something unreadable. He scratched his nape and stepped aside.

โ€œYeah. Uhโ€ฆwhat time is practice?โ€

โ€œThursday at three.โ€

He nodded and tried a smile that never reached his eyes. โ€œCool. See ya, Nol.โ€

I froze in place as the door swung shut behind him, willing my heartbeat to calm the fuck down.

Did that happen?

It wasnโ€™t real. I knew that, but he didnโ€™t pull away. He lingered, he pressed closer, heโ€ฆhe kissed me.

Reality check: Vinnie was a notorious prankster. He was always doing something to push boundariesโ€”make you laugh, make you mad, make you stop taking life so damned seriously. Silly was his fallback language. If lighthearted pranks and teasing kept some uncomfortable parts of the past at bay, I was all for it.

But I was still confused. Very confused.

Review:

I’m going to say straight up that I’m pretty sure the reason I didn’t like this one as much as the other books by Lane Hayes that I’ve read is … me. I just didn’t like Vinnie as a character. He’s one of those overgrown guy’s guys that just irritates me to no end. He’s in his late 30s, still giving people noogies, playing practical jokes, and acts the class clown. Not that I’m against people having fun but that’s not my idea of fun and that colored my reading of the book. I get that he’s got a lot of issues – from his mother’s death to his father’s absentee parenting to coming to grips with his future and sexuality. But I just couldn’t let the rest go to really invest in him. When he was more serious, though, I definitely could see the appeal.

On the other hand, I loved Nolan. He’s a pillar of the community and his family, a fabulously loving & supportive uncle, and once he gets over the way things ended between them he’s there for Vinnie too. Even knowing it most likely means another broken heart.

I always enjoy Hayes’s writing — she gives readers robust characters (even when they aren’t my type), compelling stories, and satisfying HEAs. And I’m definitely excited to see what happens next – the little teaser with JC has me impatient to see him and Riley together. This one character being not my favorite in no way reflects on Hayes and her skills, it’s just a me thing.

Two strangers, an online dating app, and a chance at foreverโ€ฆ

Chance

After months of online correspondence with a sexy businessman, weโ€™re finally meeting in personโ€”in London, no less!

Okay. Itโ€™s a casual meet-up. Nothing to get excited about. I fully understand that online connections donโ€™t always translate in person. Roman could be pompous or worseโ€ฆboring.

Wish me luck!

Roman

Dinner with my online โ€œfriendโ€ doesnโ€™t go well. I shouldnโ€™t be disappointed. Thatโ€™s life.

But just as Iโ€™m ready to write our peculiar acquaintanceship off, Chance turns up unexpectedly at a karaoke bar. Donโ€™t ask what Iโ€™m doing there. I have no idea. However, I donโ€™t mind at all. It feels like the universe is giving us a cosmic redo. Sure, Chance lives in California and my home is in the UK now, but this feels like the real thing. Something worth taking a chance on.

A forever chance.

Excerpt:

โ€œWhat time is it?โ€ I grumbled, rubbing my stubbled jaw.

โ€œHalf one,โ€ a deep, rumbly voice replied.

I spun on my heels with my mouth wide open, unsure where to begin. An apology, a thank-you, maybe even a fuck-you.โ€ฆWords werenโ€™t my friend without caffeine and if it was really one thirty in the afternoon, I was going to have a difficult time navigating this one.

If I was going to unravel in a foreign country, was an audience necessary? And better questionโ€ฆdid it have to be this man?

Roman stepped into the room, instantly taking over the space. The combination of his height, broad shoulders, and broody presence made him seem intimidating as fuck even in a navy V-neck sweater, casual jeans, and bare feet. His hair flopped roguishly over his right eye, which should have softened his sharp features, butโ€ฆit didnโ€™t. He was devilishly handsome and sexy andโ€” I think I puked on his shoes last night. Oh, please let this be a bad dream.

I squeezed my eyes shut, hoping for a scene change and a new cast when I opened them again.

Nope. I was still in Romanโ€™s guest room, standing three feet from the man himself, wearing his T-shirt andโ€”

โ€œAre these your boxers?โ€ I asked, plucking at the silky red fabric.

One corner of his mouth twisted in wry amusement. โ€œThey were a gift. You can have them. How are you feeling?โ€

I wrinkled my nose. โ€œIโ€™ve been better. Iโ€™m sorry aboutโ€”โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t worry about it.โ€ He waved dismissively and moved to the doorway. โ€œWould you like coffee or tea?โ€

โ€œCoffee, please.โ€

He smiled kindly. โ€œYou got it. Iโ€™ll make toast and bacon too.โ€

โ€œThank you. Coffee is fine, butโ€”โ€ I paused to look around the immaculate room. โ€œI need my clothes.โ€

โ€œTrust me. You donโ€™t want your clothes.โ€

โ€œHuh?โ€

โ€œI threw your socks and underwear in the wash, but your suit and shirt needed to be dry-cleaned. Theyโ€™ll be ready tomorrow. Iโ€™ll grab a pair of sweatpants and socks for you. Youโ€™re welcome to shower. The toothbrush on the counter is the one you used last night. Iโ€™ll leave clothes on the banister for you. Meet me downstairs when youโ€™re ready.โ€

Roman was gone before I could thank him or protest. I decided I wasnโ€™t ready to deal with the fuzzier parts of last night that had resulted in my clothing immediately needing to be dry-cleaned. I headed for the bathroom instead.

The deliciously hot shower under a wide spray felt so amazing, I never wanted to get out. And the thick towel on the warming rack was a slice of nirvana. I dried myself, then wrapped the towel around my waist and wiped steam off the mirror. I scanned the marble-and-glass haven as I brushed my teeth, sighing at the very unwelcome memory of kneeling on the tiled floor in front of the porcelain god.

How was I going to face this man? Iโ€™d been a fucking mess last night. Running into traffic, dancing in the rainโ€ฆand ohโ€ฆshit. Iโ€™d called him daddy.

More than once.

Heat bloomed across my cheeks as I rinsed and patted my mouth dry, but I couldnโ€™t exactly hide in here. I slipped the boxers and tee on and found a pair of gray sweats and black socks perched on the banister post where Roman said theyโ€™d be. I finished dressing, finger-combed my short hair, and took one last cleansing breath before following the scent of coffee downstairs.

Review:

The London Chance is perfect for people who are looking for a low angst, easy read. From the fall out of a disastrous first date to a sweet bonus story, it’s all sweetness and steam.

Chance and Roman are both enjoyable characters. Chance is lively & carefree, a good match for Roman’s reservedness. Neither thinks that a long distance relationship can work but are willing to enjoy the time they do have as much as they can. It leads to some moments as they realize the end is coming and a cute resolution.

Humor and heat blend well to give readers a quick journey to HEA for two delightful characters. After enjoying this and Fairy Cakes in Winter so much, Lane Hayes is going on my must read author list.

Fairy Cakes in Winter

by Lane Hayes

Narrated by Michael Dean

Blurb:

A grumpy baker, a quirky ad man, and a recipe for foreverโ€ฆ

Scott

So this cute guy sits next to me on the plane and proceeds to talk my ear off for hours. Not good. I donโ€™t like talking and I donโ€™t like strangers. But Theoโ€™s sweet, smart, and sexyโ€”the perfect distraction from business woes and personal worries.

Okay, things got overly friendly, but weโ€™re adults and we know the score. Iโ€™m too old, heโ€™s too nice, and we live on different continents.

Then, out of the blue, he shows up at my bakery with that pretty smile and a list of wacky marketing ideasโ€”like how to make fairy cakes a thing.

I donโ€™t like fairy cakes.

But I do like Theo, soโ€ฆmaybe?

Theo

The new me takes risks. The new me is brave and confident. The new me flirts with hunky, imposing bears on planes while traveling to a foreign country.

Itโ€™s going well, thank you.

However, my plans to do some sightseeing, drink tea, and eat my weight in biscuits every day get derailed when I realize there might be a way to help Scott and prove a few things to myself.

Donโ€™t worry. I wonโ€™t fall for the grumpy baker. No way. Heโ€™s complicated and broody andโ€”

Uh ohโ€ฆit might be too late. Help!

Fairy Cakes in Winter is a bisexual, age-gap, grumpy/sunshine MM romance featuring a sexy baker, a sunny tourist, and a few dozen fairy cakes.

Excerpt:

The flight attendant directed traffic with a smile, pointing the college-aged twentysomethings hefting giant backpacks to the far side of the plane before picking up her microphone. She gave the usual rambling speech, asking passengers not to crowd the aisles or stuff winter jackets into the overhead binsโ€ฆYadda, yadda.

I listened with half an ear for important info, like when this tin can was expected to get in the air and what time weโ€™d land in London. Not that it mattered. Iโ€™d been on the late flight from Seattle so often, I knew I was in for a nine-and-a-half-hour ride and that Iโ€™d arrive at Heathrow sometime in the late afternoon. I also knew Iโ€™d be too disoriented to care about anything other than grabbing something to eat on my way home.

I had to admit, I was one of those weirdos who kind of liked the hum of airplane noise, and there was something vaguely comforting in the routine Iโ€™d established over the past seven years. I shrugged off my coat and made sure my headphones were within reachโ€”along with my iPad, reading glasses, and the Ziploc bag of homemade trail mix my sister had sneaked into my carry-on bag. Then I buckled up, settled in, and hoped like hell that the seat next to mine would magically remain open.

Of course, that rarely happened. And I highly doubted my wish would come true this time around โ€™cause A, cross-Atlantic flights were rarely empty, and B, I didnโ€™t have that kind of luck. The best I could hope for was a quiet neighbor. I peered over at the empty window seat and sent up a quick prayer for it to stay that way before slipping my readers on to check messages on my phone.

My ten-year-old nephew informed me heโ€™d already beat my high score on Madden, my parents asked if there was any way I might finagle a trip home in the spring, and my sister claimed sheโ€™d added more M&Mโ€™s to her trail mix this year. She also asked if I was okay.

I sent an exclamation sign to Emmett, a heart symbol to my folks, and a thumbs-up to Heather. None of those messages required a wordy response. Iโ€™d learned that it was best to stick to basic communication with my family. Emmett was happy with the occasional poop or wind emoji, and my parents liked hearts. Real words got tricky. My parents knew that coming home for Christmas had been a stretch for me. I couldnโ€™t swing another trip too soon, and it was best to avoid circular arguments.

And questions that might spark conversations about an old ex and his new wife. Yep, a thumbs-up was much easier.

I added another for posterity and was about to switch my cell to airplane mode when a new message from Becca lit up my screen.

Call me when you land! Iโ€™ll pick you up. Btw, I made a gorgeous lemon meringue pie Iโ€™m dying for you to try. Safe travels! xo

Review:

This is my first book by Hayes and I was pleasantly surprised – it was scorching, sweet, and funny.

Scott is deliciously grumpy and stoic. He’s had his heart broken badly enough that he’s not in a hurry to try love again. Too bad fate has him sitting next to bubbly, sweet Theo, who’s fear of flying has him talking Scott’s ear off. Before he realizes it, the flight is almost over and he didn’t mind it a bit. And definitely not when things get a little hot in an airport bathroom; after all, what can it hurt since they’ll never see each other again … until Theo walks into his bakery a couple of days later.

Not usually one to take chances, Theo finds himself acting quite out of character but there’s just something about Scott that draws him. And Theo knows he can help out the bakery. It’s a great opportunity to help him evaluate the direction his life is taking him … and get to spend even more time with the sexy baker. He just needs to remember that falling for him is a horrible idea.

With Fairy Cakes in Winter, Hayes gives readers appealing characters who find themselves in a realistic situation with minimal angst. It’s a slow, but definitely steamy, build to an enjoyable HEA.

Oh, I did this as an audiobook and I rarely listen to them – I had a horrible experience AGES ago that was so bad it still makes me hesitant today ๐Ÿ™‚ – but Dean has a pleasant voice and does a fantastic job bringing Hayes’s characters & their interactions to life. Made me brave enough to get another one to try out!

*****

Excerpt:

Zane refilled my glass and returned it to me with a naughty smirk. โ€œYou get kinda corny when youโ€™re tipsy, Schuster. Itโ€™s cute.โ€

โ€œCute?โ€

โ€œYeah. You get goofy. Your ears turn red and it makes the freckles on your nose stand out. Then you do that thing with your hair where you swipe your hand through it so many times that it looks like you just rolled out of bed.โ€

โ€œUhโ€ฆokay. Thatโ€™s embarrassing.โ€ I searched for a reflective surface as I attempted to pat my unruly brown hair into some semblance of order. โ€œI was going for debonair and I got bar mitzvah kid chic,โ€ I grumbled.

Zane leaned forward and gave me an intense look I didnโ€™t understand.

โ€œYou donโ€™t have to be anyone but yourself with me, Eric. I like you just the way you are.โ€ He sat back again and cocked his head. โ€œSo letโ€™s talk about this stupid engagement party. Whatโ€™s the dress code?โ€

โ€œUmโ€ฆ itโ€™s probably dressy casual,โ€ I replied with a furrowed brow. I wanted to back up a sentence or two and analyze his words and dissect the meaning of โ€œI like you just the way you areโ€.

โ€œThe usual oxymoron,โ€ he snarked. โ€œYou are going with me, right?โ€

โ€œSure. If you want.โ€

โ€œI want. Itโ€™ll save us both the trouble of finding some poor unsuspecting sucker to drag to a fancy shindig.โ€

โ€œTrue. Speaking of suckers, donโ€™t you have a date tonight?โ€

Zane glanced at his watch and then stretched his legs out on the bench so his shoe nudged my thigh. โ€œIโ€™ve got time. Talk to me. What else have you been up to lately? I noticed thereโ€™s a new exhibit at the Modern Museum. Have you gone? I think itโ€™s a midcentury retrospective with Motherwell and de Kooning. I know you like the scribbly art andโ€ฆโ€

His conversation was easy. The gentrified version of his former surfer dude accent had a lilting quality I could have listened to for hours. I felt myself truly begin to relax and let go of the invisible hold Iโ€™d had on my emotions, like a swimmer grasping onto a ledge who finally realizes he can reach the bottom of the pool. Being with someone who knew quirky details about me and accepted them without judgment or reservation was a gift.

I treasured all of my friends, but Zane was special. Our friendship was rooted in geography and history and now time. He wasnโ€™t making a romantic advance when he asked me to attend Nickโ€™s engagement party with him. That was latent wishful thinking on my part. Zane was simply being who he always was. My oldest and best friend.
