Chasing Christmas Eve

Heartbreaker Bay series

by Jill Shalvis

Blurb:

Meet cute…

Run for the hillsโ€”temporarily. Thatโ€™s Colbie Albrightโ€™s plan when she flees New York for San Francisco. Wrangling her crazy family by day and writing a bestselling YA fantasy series by night has taken its toll. In short, Colbieโ€™s so over it that sheโ€™s under it. Sheโ€™s also under the waters of a historic San Francisco fountain within an hour of arrival. Fortunately, the guy who fishes Colbie out has her looking forward to Christmas among strangers. But sheโ€™s pretty sure Spencer Baldwin wonโ€™t be a stranger for long.

Make merry…

Spenceโ€™s commitment to hiding from the Ghosts of Relationships Past means he doesnโ€™t have to worry about the powerfulโ€”okay, crazy hotโ€”chemistry heโ€™s got with Colbie. Just because she can laugh at anything, especially herself… just because sheโ€™s gorgeous and a great listenerโ€ฆjust because she โ€œgetsโ€ Spencer immediately doesnโ€™t mean he wonโ€™t be able to let Colbie go. Does it?

โ€ฆand hope for a miracle.

Now the clockโ€™s ticking for Colbie and Spence: Two weeks to cut loose. Two weeks to fall hard. Two weeks to figure out how to make this Christmas last a lifetime.

Excerpt:

Spence, still crouched low and easily balanced on the balls of his feet, dropped to his knees and pulled her up to hers. Brushing the hair from her forehead, he eyed the spot where theyโ€™d connected. โ€œYou okay?โ€

She started to say yes but his gaze slid to her mouth and she lost her train of thought, instead licking her suddenly dry lips.

Spence, watching the movement avidly, let out a rough breath. โ€œColbie,โ€ he said quietly, in a very serious, very low octave that sounded like pure sex.

She stood up. โ€œY-yes?โ€

Also standing, he slid his hands up her arms, giving her a very slow tug, almost as if expecting resistance.

There was no resistance. Hell, she nearly took a flying leap at him.

He laughed softly, sending a bolt of heat through her. Her knees wobbled and his arm wrapped around her waist, steadying her. Their gazes locked and they both froze in place, she from a sudden rush of emotions, Spence probably from watching them play out across her face. She once again started to say somethingโ€”still had no idea whatโ€”but was silenced by his hot mouth covering hers.

Yes was her only coherent thought and she pressed up against him as he angled his head, taking the kiss even deeper.

Lost and Found Sisters

by Jill Shalvis

Blurb:

They say life can change in an instantโ€ฆ

After losing her sister in a devastating car accident, chef Quinn Weller is finally getting her life back on track. She appears to have it all: a loving family, a dream job in one of L.A.’s hottest eateries, and a gorgeous boyfriend dying to slip an engagement ring on her finger. So why does she feel so empty, like she’s looking for a missing piece she can’t find?

The answer comes when a lawyer tracks down Quinn and reveals a bombshell secret and a mysterious inheritance that only she can claim. This shocking revelation washes over Quinn like a tidal wave. Her whole life has been a lie.

On impulse, Quinn gives up her job, home, and boyfriend. She heads up the coast to the small hometown of Wildstone, California, which is just a few hours north, but feels worlds apart from Los Angeles. Though she doesn’t quite fit in right away, she can’t help but be drawn to the townโ€™s simple pleasuresโ€ฆand the handsome, dark-haired stranger who offers friendship with no questions asked.

As Quinn settles into Wildstone, she discovers there’s another surprise in store for her. The inheritance isn’t a house or money, but rather something earthshattering, something that will make her question everything she thought she knew about herself, about her family. Now with a world of possibilities opening up to Quinn, she must decide if this new life is the one she was always meant to haveโ€”and the one that could finally give her the fulfillment she’s searched so long for.

Excerpt:

โ€œYouโ€™re up, honey,โ€ Carolyn said and gestured to the front counter.

Trev, the carefully tousled barista, was an L.A. beach bum and aspiring actor forced to work to support his surfing habit. His hands worked at the speed of light while the rest of him seemed chilled and relaxed. โ€œHey, darlinโ€™, howโ€™s life today?โ€

โ€œGood,โ€ Quinn said. She didnโ€™t want to brag, but sheโ€™d totally gotten out of bed today with only two hits of the snooze button. โ€œHow did your audition go?โ€

โ€œGot the part.โ€ Trev beamed. โ€œYouโ€™re looking at the best fake Thai delivery guy who ever lived. It means my luck as changed, so say youโ€™ll finally go out with me.โ€

Quinn smiledโ€”see, she totally did smile!โ€”and shook her head. โ€œIโ€™m notโ€”โ€œ

Trev piped in along with her, in perfect sync, โ€œโ€”dating right now,โ€ and then shook his head.

โ€œWell, Iโ€™m not,โ€ she said.

โ€œItโ€™s not right, a hot chick like you. Youโ€™re way too young to be in a rut. You know that, right?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not in a rut.โ€ She was justโ€ฆnot feeling life right now, thatโ€™s all. โ€œAnd hey, I didnโ€™t tell you my order yet,โ€ she said when she realized he was already working on her coffee.

โ€œHas it changed?โ€ he asked. โ€œEver?โ€

No, but now she wanted to order something crazy just to throw him off, except she wanted her usual, dammit.

Okay, so maybe she was in a rut. But routine made life simpler and after the complications sheโ€™d been through, simple was the key to getting out of bed and putting one foot in front of the other every day.

That and the badly needed caffeine, of course.

โ€œYou should go out with him,โ€ Carolyn whispered behind her. She smiled kindly when Quinn craned her neck and looked at her. โ€œYou only live once, right?โ€

โ€œNot true,โ€ Quinn said. โ€œYou lie every day. You only die once.โ€

Carolynโ€™s smile slowly faded in understanding. โ€œThen make it count, honey. Go hog wild.โ€

Hog wild, huh? Quinn turned back to Trev.

โ€œIโ€™m all for the hog wild,โ€ he said hopefully.

Quinn went for it. โ€œAn extra shot and whip.โ€

Trev blinked and then sighed. โ€œYeah, we really need to work on your idea of hog wild.โ€

Elle Wheatonโ€™s priorities: friends, career, and kick-ass shoes. Then thereโ€™s the muscular wall of stubbornness thatโ€™s security expert Archer Huntโ€”who comes before everything else. Excerpt:

#TrainWreck

Elle made a move to snatch the knife from Archerโ€™s fingers but the bastard held firm. She started a tug-of-war with him before remembering that she no longer let anyone see her sweat and forced herself to go still.

Not that Archer let go. โ€œYou still have it,โ€ he said, a whisper of surprise in his voice.

The equivalent of a full-on double take from the man who was all but impossible to shock.

And yes, of course she still had the knife. Did he really think she wouldnโ€™t? She didnโ€™t blush very often but she felt heat rush to her face now. Regret, partly.

Mostly full-blown mortification.

Sheโ€™d very carefully taught herself to be strong and confident and to never look back.

Ever.

Sentimentality didnโ€™t have a place in her life. Or so she told herself. So why then had she been carrying the small packet knife Archer had given her the night heโ€™d saved her all those years ago? Especially since the thought of how sheโ€™d tried to repay himโ€”and God, the humility of how sheโ€™d actually offered him the only thing sheโ€™d had, that being her body, which heโ€™d turned down flatโ€”still made her face flame. The worst part had been when heโ€™d vanished like itโ€™d been nothing to him, when to her itโ€™d been everything.

She might not know why heโ€™d done what he had but she still wasnโ€™t leaving here without that knife. It was a badge. A reminder of who sheโ€™d been and who she was now.

Neither of them had moved. Around them the night life in the pub went on. Laughter, conversations, more dancingโ€ฆall oblivious to this tight, little cocoon of just the two of them crouched in front of the bar. They might as well have been completely alone for all the attention anyone paid them.

Balanced with apparent ease on the balls of his feet, Archer leaned in even closer if that was possible, close enough that his knees touched hers. Close enough that she could see every single gold spec in his hazel eyes. Every single black-as-ink eyelash framing those eyes. He was hours past a five oโ€™clock shadow and a muscle ticked in his square jaw.

A rare tell from a man who could be a stone when he wanted.

The rest of him was as big and bad and intimidating as ever. His large body blocked out everything behind him and although he could be terrifyingly scary when he wanted to be, he never was with her. With her he was careful. Cautious.

Distant.

And she hated that most of all.

This time when she tried to tug the knife from his long fingers, he let her. Rising, she stared down at him. โ€œWe done here?โ€

He rose to his feet too. And just looked at her.

โ€œWell?โ€ she asked.

โ€œWeโ€™re never done,โ€ he said.

A Heartbreaker Bay Christmas Novella

by Jill Shalvis

Blurb:

Itโ€™s Christmas Eve and Rory Andrews is desperate to get home to the family she hasnโ€™t seen in years. Problem is, her only ride to Lake Tahoe comes in the form of the annoyingly handsome Max Stranton, and his big, goofy, lovable dog Carl.

Hours stuck in a truck with the dead sexy Max sounds like a fate worse than death (not), but Roryโ€™s out of options. Sheโ€™s had a crush on Max since high school and sheย knowsย heโ€™s attracted to her, too. But they have historyโ€ฆ and Max is the only one who knows why it went south.

Theyโ€™ve done a good job of ignoring their chemistry so far, but a long road trip in a massive blizzard might be just what they need to face their pastโ€ฆ and one steamy, snowy night is all it takes to bring Max and Rory together at last.

Excerpt:

โ€œYou were on the phone,โ€ Rory said.

โ€œI was.โ€

She looked at him, clearly waiting for more, her pretty eyes not giving much away. She was so petite a good wind could blow her away, but that analogy implied she was fragile.

Rory was anything but fragile, and in fact her inner strength was even more attractive to him than her beauty.

โ€œIt was Willa,โ€ he said, willing to give her that. Besides she was more curious than a cat and he wanted to appease that curiosity and fast, before she figured out the rest.

She looked at him, surprised. โ€œWhat did she want?โ€

Shit. On top of curious as a cat, she was like Carl with a damn bone. He twisted around to buckle Carl back in and then put on his own seatbelt. He turned the engine over and cranked up the radio.

Rory turned it off. โ€œShe already made you drive me, so what now?โ€

โ€œNothing.โ€

Rory turned in her seat to fully face him. โ€œWas she checking to see if weโ€™d killed each other?โ€

He smiled at that, a thought that had been so close to his own, but she narrowed her eyes, not amused. โ€œWhat did she want, Max?โ€

He went to put the truck in gear but she leaned into him to turn off the engine and grab his keys. Her breast brushed against his arm, giving him another zap of awareness.

โ€œCome on,โ€ she said. โ€œThis is Willa weโ€™re talking about. I love her, but sheโ€™s incapable of not sticking her nose in where it doesnโ€™t belong, especially when it comes to me. What did she want?โ€

Shit, itโ€™d been two minutes and he was already regretting his โ€œgentleโ€ promise. He looked her right in the eyes. โ€œNothing.โ€

Her eyes went to little slits. โ€œLiar.โ€ She opened her door, revealing that the slush had turned to snow, as she swung his keys from her fingers. โ€œTell me or say goodbye to your keys.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™ll strand you too,โ€ he pointed out.

She raised her eyebrows and he got the message. She didnโ€™t care.

โ€œFine,โ€ he said. โ€œShe told me to be nice to you. Actually, she said gentle.โ€ While she gaped at that, he snagged the keys from her lax fingers, feeling like an asshole when he leaned into her, reaching past her to slam her door shut.

She didnโ€™t shrink back, which meant that their bodies once again bumped up against each other, and it was like they knew what his brain couldnโ€™t seem to comprehendโ€”he wanted her. He was a little thrown by that, and the now familiar zing of electricity, only slightly mollified to realize by the way her breath hitched that she felt it too.

โ€œIf you even try to be gentle,โ€ she said, โ€œIโ€™ll get out and walk.โ€

Book Review, Cedar Ridge series, Jill Shalvis, Nobody But You

I am so beyond thrilled to have Jill Shalvis stop by today to answer a couple of real quick questions (she is a busy lady ๐Ÿ™‚ ) and share the newest in the Cedar Ridge series, Nobody But You.

We’ve seen the others in this series before (Second Chance Summer & My Kind of Wonderful) and once again Shalvis delivers a total knockout!

*****

In the book Jacobโ€™s mom, Carrie, is sick. What was it like writing a character that had dementia?

Having family experience with this, I just wanted to show that not every minute of it is torturous.

Describe what readers can expect from a Jill Shalvis romance in 140 characters.

Hot guys, fun, sexy, humor, hot guys, love, girl power and as it canโ€™t be said enough, more hot guys. ๐Ÿ™‚

Finish this sentence: My heroine will neverโ€ฆ

Go quietly into the nightโ€ฆ ๐Ÿ™‚

Cedar Ridge series

by Jill Shalvis

Blurb:

When Jacob was injured in the war, it changed him for life. Now all he wants to do is come home to Cedar Ridge, settle in at his lakeside cabin and get some much-needed peace and quiet. But there’s no peace to be had when he finds a spitfire of a woman camping out on his property. Half the time he’s not sure whether he wants to spank her or kiss–or maybe both. He’s in a dark place and a dark mood, and here’s this wildly hot woman who is also funny and light and may be the balm be needs to soothe his aching soul.

Sophie Marren is pretty much penniless after leaving her abusive husband. She doesn’t have the money to pay rent or the slip fees for docking the boat where she’s been sleeping. She was getting along just perfectly until the good-looking, brooding, I’m-too-sexy-for-myself guy moves into the lake cabin that the slip belongs to. Sure he’s hot as the noon sun with those dark lens and even darker ‘tude, but god forbid she tie herself to another man who’s always telling her what to do. But the more she gets to know Jacob, the more she sees how willing he is to battle for her wounded heart…a battle she might just let him win.

Excerpt:

She eyed the bench a long beat but did eventually sit, perching primly as far from him as she could get and yet still be close enough to grab the bottle.

Smart woman.

She took the Scotch and drank. Her eyes watered and she coughed as she handed it to him. With a sigh, she leaned back to study the night sky. Her bared throat was slim and creamy smooth. An unexpected temptation. Remembering the flash of pain and vulnerability sheโ€™d unwittingly revealed, and that for whatever reason heโ€™d somehow added to it, he spoke. โ€œIโ€™m sorry.โ€

She glanced at him as if sheโ€™d never heard a man apologize before in her life. โ€œForโ€ฆbreathing?โ€ she asked. โ€œHaving a penis? What?โ€

โ€œYou were upset because you didnโ€™t know I was a Kincaid.โ€

She sighed. โ€œThat was just me looking for a reason to be mad at you so I wouldnโ€™tโ€ฆโ€

She bit her lower lip, clearly not wanting to go on.

But now he had to know. โ€œSo you wouldnโ€™t what?โ€

โ€œNothing,โ€ she said. โ€œItโ€™s just that Iโ€™m trying to make better choices.โ€

โ€œOf which I wouldnโ€™t be one.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s not necessarily your fault,โ€ she said. โ€œItโ€™s that youโ€™re a man.โ€

โ€œGuilty as charged.โ€

โ€œAnd Iโ€™m off men right now.โ€

โ€œAnd onโ€ฆwomen?โ€ he asked with admittedly more than a little fascination.

She rolled her eyes. โ€œIโ€™m on no one, but thank you for proving my point on men.โ€

โ€œI get that,โ€ he said. โ€œBut being off men doesnโ€™t seem to be making you very happy, or sound like a whole lot of fun.โ€

โ€œMaybe I donโ€™t need fun.โ€

He understood that. Heโ€™d felt the same way since Brett died. โ€œWhat do you need?โ€ he asked, honestly wanting to know more about her.

Instead of answering, she reached for the bottle. He waited until she met his gaze before letting go.

โ€œNothing,โ€ she said a little too quickly. โ€œEverythingโ€™sโ€ฆperfect.โ€

โ€œAnd your glass is half full,โ€ he said. โ€œSo youโ€™ve said.โ€

But he didnโ€™t believe her. โ€œHow about a game?โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t play games.โ€

Now, that wasnโ€™t exactly true. Whether she knew it or not, sheโ€™d been playing withย  his head since heโ€™d first laid eyes on her. โ€œThree truths and a lie,โ€ he said.

She stared at him. โ€œAs in you tell me three truths and a lie, and I pick out the lie?โ€

โ€œYes.โ€

She considered this. โ€œWhat do I get if I win?โ€

โ€œWhat do you want?โ€

For the briefest of beats, her gaze dropped to his mouth.

Oh, hell yeah, he thought. Want meโ€ฆ

โ€œMy first boyfriend taught me that game,โ€ she said.

โ€œWhat did the winner get?โ€

โ€œA kiss.โ€

Definitely still playing with his headโ€ฆ โ€œIs that what you want, Sophie? A kiss?โ€

Again she stared at his mouth before dropping eye contact and wrapping that eye-stopping pink robe tighter around her body. โ€œDo you?โ€ she asked.

โ€œHell yes.โ€

Her gaze flew to his.

โ€œProblem is,โ€ he said conversationally, โ€œif I kissed you, I donโ€™t think Iโ€™d be able to stop.โ€

Her mouth literally fell open. The pulse at the base of her throat jumped. And she seemed to lose her words.

He went on. โ€œBut you should know, I donโ€™t lose. That means youโ€™ll have to tell me three truths and a lie.โ€ And heโ€™d hopefully get to know more about her.

She closed her mouth to bite her lower lip in what couldโ€™ve been indecision or excitement. Obviously he was hoping for the latter. โ€œBut hey, if youโ€™re not sure you can handle losing, we can just forget about it,โ€ he said.

The challenge lifted her chin and put sparks in her eyes. Thatโ€™s it, babe. Show me what youโ€™ve got.

โ€œBring it,โ€ she said.

Review:

I love Sophie but I still get a little tired of his flip-flopping emotions โ€“ luckily Jacob has a lot more patience with her than I do ๐Ÿ™‚ ย Other than that though sheโ€™s great. ย I understand where sheโ€™s coming from, with her ex and her family, and it makes her issues believable.ย  I love how saucy she is and how sheโ€™s willing to give Jacob heck but still be there for him when he needs it.

Iโ€™ve been anxious to get to Jacobโ€™s story, mainly because heโ€™s the unknown Kincaid (although Kenna gives him a run for his money there ๐Ÿ™‚ ).ย  Shalvis does a good job of showing his conflicting emotions over his choices and how the past decade without his family, plus everything that heโ€™s seen and done, has impacted him.ย  I love watching him work his way back to a happy place with the rest of the siblings.ย  And I adore his & Hudโ€™s relationship with their mom.ย  Itโ€™s both sweet and fun and I love them all together.

Once again Shalvis delivers a winner and I canโ€™t wait to see where she goes next!

Book Review, Cedar Ridge series, Jill Shalvis, My Kind of Wonderful

25317360My Kind of Wonderful

A Cedar Ridge Novel

by Jill Shalvis

UNEXPECTED AND UNDENIABLE . . .

Bailey Moore has an agenda: skiing in the Rockies, exploring castles in Europe, ballroom dancing in Argentina. Now that she has a second lease on life, she’s determined not to miss a thing. What she doesn’t realize is that item #1 comes with a six-foot-one ski god hot enough to melt a polar ice cap. She doesn’t want to miss out on him either, but Hudson Kincaid isn’t the type of guy to love and let go. And as gorgeous as Cedar Ridge is, she’s not planning to stick around.

As head of ski patrol at his family’s resort, Hud thinks he’s seen it all. But never has he run into someone like Bailey. She might look delicate, but her attitude is all firecracker. And her infectious joy touches something deep within him that he’s been missing far too long. Now he’ll just have to convince Bailey to take a chance on her biggest adventure yet . . . something rare and all kinds of wonderful.

I really got caught up in the Kincaids when I read Second Chance Summer and I remember not caring which of the siblings was next because I knew I was going to read their story whoever it was. ย But I do have to say that I am SO tickled that it is Hud.ย  He is such a rascal that having him meet his match is extra fun.

And this story is fantastic! ย It is one of those slow burns as we get to know both of them while at the same time they are getting know each other.ย  As to be expected, they have hang-ups (understandable & realistic ones) that they have to work their way through.

Hud is a great hero – smart, caring, and has taken on so much responsibility. ย Unfortunately that also he’s not very good at letting things go and he carries around a lot with him. ย His dedication to his mother is absolutely amazing but the guilt over the way his brother left is dragging him down. ย And while he doesn’t have time for much more in his life, between his jobs and family, Bailey definitely gets his attention!

I thinkย sheย is one of my favorite heroines ever and ย I so wish I could be more like her (of course without going thru what she did to get there).ย  Sheโ€™s got an amazing love of life, tempered with an interesting, straight-forward wisdom.ย  I think that the HEA moment for her and Hud will go on my list as one of the best Iโ€™ve read for a very long time.

On a little of a down sideย I didnโ€™t feel like the siblings were involved as much as in the previous story.ย  I think because Bailey hasย got such a compelling story that maybe there isnโ€™t much room.ย  Or maybe it was so much like coming home again, after getting to know them so much before, that it was one of those moments where you slipped right in like you never left. ย They are just as rowdy & in each otherโ€™s business, which I loved so much about them.

If youโ€™ve never read a Shalvis book, this is a FANTASTIC series to start with.ย  All of the quirky Kincaids and their SOs are delightful โ€“ full of mischief and love for one another.ย  They play hard, work hard, love hard and live hard.ย  They donโ€™t have things easy but they have each other and I canโ€™t wait to see what Shalvis dreams up for them.

(The next book is about Hudโ€™s twin, Jacob, and since heโ€™s been MIA for years, Iโ€™m very interested to find out exactly who he is and what his deal is going to be.)

Book Review, Cedar Ridge series, Jill Shalvis, Second Chance Summer

cover62953-mediumSecond Chance Summer

A Cedar Ridge Novel

by Jill Shalvis

Cedar Ridge, Colorado, is famous for crisp mountain air, clear blue skies, and pine-scented breezes. And it’s the last place Lily Danville wants to be. But she needs a job, and there’s an opening at the hottest resort in her hometown. What has her concerned is the other hot property in Cedar Ridge: Aidan Kincaid-firefighter, rescue worker, and heartbreaker. She never could resist that devastating smile . . .

The Kincaid brothers are as rough and rugged as the Rocky Mountains they call home. Aidan has always done things his own way, by his own rules. And never has he regretted anything more than letting Lily walk out of his life ten years ago. If anyone has ever been in need of rescuing, she has. What she needs more than anything are long hikes, slow dances, and sizzling kisses. But that can only happen if he can get her to give Cedar Ridge-and this bad boy-a second chance . . .

I have been a fan of Jill Shalvisโ€™s work for a very long time.ย  I have always loved how she does such a fantastic job of delivering not just a love story between two people, but also brings to her readers well-developed and intricate family dynamics.ย  Thereโ€™s always more going on and by the time you close the book you feel like you are part of the clan.

The Kincaids may be a little dysfunctional, considering how they came to be, but they truly care about each other and it is there for anyone to see.ย  They are protective, but they arenโ€™t afraid to give a good ribbing when it is needed โ€ฆ and they are always there in a heartbeat when another is in trouble.ย  Itโ€™s a fabulous bond and one that extends to their siblingโ€™s loved ones as well.ย  Once you are part of the group, you become a Kincaid with all the highs and lows that brings.

Lily hasnโ€™t had that kind of relationship in a very long time and sheโ€™s running scared of Aiden and all the complications that he brings.ย  But the Kincaids are just as stubborn as they are loyal and heโ€™s not going down without a fight.ย  While he can understand her fear, heโ€™s willing to take it on and show her that heโ€™s worth the risk.

Itโ€™s an emotional battle for both of them, but such an enjoyable one.ย  And I canโ€™t wait for the next Kincaid to meet his or her match.ย  Itโ€™s going to be a heck of a ride ๐Ÿ™‚

Animal Magnetism series, Book Review, Jill Shalvis, Still the One

cover58310-mediumLove is a dare in the sexy new romance by the award-winning New York Times bestselling author of the Animal Magnetism novels and the Lucky Harbor series…

Darcy Stone is game for anything except sexy Navy vet and physical therapist AJ Colten, the guy whoโ€™d rejected her when sheโ€™d needed him most. Now the shoe is on the other foot and he needs her to play nice and help him secure grants for his patients. Unfortunately Darcy canโ€™t refuse. She needs the money to fund her passion project: rescuing S&R dogs and placing them with emotionally wounded soldiers.

AJ admits it Darcy is irresistible. But heโ€™s already been battle-scarred by a strong-willed, vivacious, adventurous woman like Darcy, and heโ€™s not making the same mistake twice until he and Darcy are forced to fake a relationship. Growing closer than theyโ€™d ever imagined possible, Darcy and AJ have to ask themselves: how much between them is pretend? Whatโ€™s the real thing? And where does it go from here?

Shalvis is a genius at writing contemporary romances โ€“ one of the most popular authors around, sheโ€™s produced tons of fantastic love stories and Iโ€™m happy to report that Still the One is one of her best.

I really loved Darcy and AJ. Theyโ€™ve been fighting an attraction for a while, but both have hangups that make it a no-go. Plus, AJ is close friends with Darcyโ€™s siblings and there is a code about that โ€ฆ one of my favorite storylines ๐Ÿ™‚

Darcy has a lot of gumption. A horrible accident left her with physical impairments, but thanks to AJโ€™s treatment (and her own stubborn nature) sheโ€™s doing very well. Unfortunately, thanks to her childhood, sheโ€™s got scars on the inside that rival those on the outside. AJ is one of THOSE guys โ€“ heโ€™s gorgeous and built and strong (both in body and spirit). Heโ€™s also loving, giving and generous, combining to be an all-around hot package. But, of course, heโ€™s got some internal scars of his own.

Stuck together by forces out of their control, and forced to fake a relationship thanks to Darcyโ€™s big mouth, nature kinda takes over. Of course it isnโ€™t smooth sailing โ€“ they still have those hangups, plus quite a few misunderstandings crop up. But it all leads to a very satisfying HEA (and plenty of material for more delicious stories).

Jill Shalvis, Lucky Harbor series, Once in a Lifetime

Ya’ll, I am SUPER excited about this one.ย  I absolutely adore Jill Shalvis’s books, especially her “Lucky Harbor” series, and today we get to spend a little time with her as she answers a few questions about her newest, Once in a Lifetime.ย

*****

Q&A with Jill Shalvis

What scene did you have the most fun writing?

Oh I have quite a few from this book! When Aubrey throws her drink in Benโ€™s face, when she runs and hides out in an AA meeting and makes friends with the pastor, when Ben figures out sheโ€™s writing a list of people sheโ€™s wronged and he wonders that itโ€™s not a lot longer than it is, when Aubrey gets a little tipsy and throws rocks at Benโ€™s window like a scene right out of the Say Anything movie โ€ฆ

Describe Aubrey a sentence

Aubrey: her heartโ€™s in the right spot but she doesnโ€™t like to lead with it, if that makes any sense.

Aubrey inherits a cat named Gus, who has quite the personalityโ€”was he inspired by a real life cat?

He was inspired by my own Satanโ€”er, Sadie, who believes she is the queen of all humans.

Aubrey has some scandalous photos from her college days surface in her exโ€™s tell-all. Is there are anything from your past you wouldnโ€™t want to see the light of day (but that youโ€™re willing to share with us)?

Alpha Man has a photo on his phone that he snapped just as I was flipping him off. Iโ€™m not super proud of that moment, which of course is why he has it as my photo id when I call himโ€ฆ

What can your fans look forward to next in the Lucky Harbor series?

Next up is a Lucky Harbor trilogy for this coming summer and fall, Itโ€™s In His Kiss, Heโ€™s So Fine, and Once In A Million, the stories of the three sexy hot guys who run Lucky Harbor Charters.

Excerpt:

It was dark outside when she got back to the Book & Bean, and she stopped short just outside the door. Sheโ€™d locked up when she left and turned off the lights.

But the door was unlocked now, and the lights on. She went still, then pulled out her phone and dialed 9-1-1. She didnโ€™t hit send but kept her thumb hovered over call. Taking a step inside, she paused. โ€œHello?โ€

โ€œHey.โ€

The low, slightly rough voice wasnโ€™t what had her heart pumping. That honor went to the fact that there was a man on a ladder in the back of her store.

Ben.

He was in jeans with a tool belt slung low on his hips, his t-shirt clinging to him. He seemed a little irritated, a little sweaty, and just looking at him Aubrey got a whole lot hot and bothered in places that had no business being hot and bothered by this man at all. โ€œWhat are you doing in here?โ€ she asked.

โ€œI work here.โ€

โ€œWhat are you talking about? Get out.โ€

โ€œSorry, Sunshine.โ€ He wasnโ€™t even looking at her, but using some sort of long, claw-like tool to pull down a ceiling tile above the wall sheโ€™d been working on. And his tool worked way better than hers.

His movements were agile and surprisingly graceful for a guy his size. Not that he was bulky in any way. Nope, that tall, built body was all lean, tough muscle, and it screamed power. And with each subtle movement, his body made it clear that it knew exactly what to do with all that power. โ€œThe owner of this building hired me,โ€ he said. โ€œSaid you were making a mess of things because your pride was bigger than your wallet.โ€

This caught her completely off guard, both the insult and the information. โ€œMy uncle owns this building,โ€ she said.

He smiled thinly. โ€œYep. Happy Birthday.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s not my birthday.โ€

โ€œThen happy youโ€™ve-got-a-great-uncle day.โ€

Jill Shalvis, Lucky Harbor series, Once in a Lifetime

Now we get to take a peek at the newest from the incomparable Jill Shalvis.ย  I adore her – with her hilarious I Love Lucy moments, the time-outs from facebook for no-no pictures (one of which was the cutest baby bottoms you’ve ever seen) and funny & immensely touching books – and I always get excited when I hear she has a new story coming out.ย  Once in a Lifetime, releasing next week,ย ย finishes up the latest trilogy in her Lucky Harbor series, which I definitely think is a must read.

Excerpt:

โ€œI donโ€™t want to talk about it,โ€ she said. Once again he was close. Too close. So damn close. โ€œAt all,โ€ she added, hearing with some alarm that her voice had softened. Everything had softened, at just his proximity. โ€œEver,โ€ she whispered, and found her gaze locked on his mouth.

He had a really great mouth.

โ€œI donโ€™t want to talk, either,โ€ that mouth said very seriously. And then he lowered his head. They shared a breath for a beat, just long enough for her to know what was going to happen and feel the anticipation swamp her.

Then he kissed her, deep and slow and utterly mesmerizing. His hands were firm on her back. Needing an anchor, she reached out and grasped his shirt and leaned into him. He was warm and solid, so very solid, emitting the kind of strength that she herself was a pint low on today.

Leaning in more, she felt his body respond.

Someone moaned. I did, she realized, swamped with the sensation of being wanted, even just physically. She took in the delicious taste of him, the feel of him, the sound of his very male groan when she stroked her tongue to his.

Things got a little hazy then. A lot hazy. She felt his hands move over her, melting her bones away. She touched him, too. Her hands wandered all over his bodyโ€”and good Lord, what a body.

She had no idea how long they kissedโ€”and kissedโ€”but she didnโ€™t think about stopping until she ran out of air. Breathing hard, she slowly opened her eyes and stared directly into his.

Theyโ€™d heated. Darkened. And something else. He wasnโ€™t looking so relaxed now. In fact, he was looking the opposite of relaxed. He lookedโ€ฆferal.

And she was his prey.
