Hard Checked

Ice Kings series

by Stacey Lynn

Blurb:

Iโ€™ve been checked hard into the boards, right off my skates, and Iโ€™m not only spinning out of controlโ€ฆ

I might just be falling in love all over again.

Getting served divorce papers was not how I planned spending New Years Day.

I probably shouldnโ€™t have gone to my favorite bar and gotten wasted trying to drown my sorrows.

I definitely shouldnโ€™t have spent the night passed out in the bed of the bartenderโ€™s daughter, Gigi.

And the absolute last thing I should have done was let my guard down and start having fun. Now Iโ€™m thinking of her all the timeโ€ฆ fantasizing about the things I want to do to Gigi.

Iโ€™m in the middle of the best hockey season of my life. I need my head in the game and my focus on the playoffs โ€“ not playing house with the gorgeous bartender who makes me feel more alive than I have in years.

Finding someone new so soon after a failed marriage isnโ€™t the smartest thing Iโ€™ve ever done.

But it just might be too late. Iโ€™ve been checked hard into the boards, right off my skates, and Iโ€™m not only spinning out of controlโ€ฆ

I might just be falling in love all over again.

Excerpt:

Another set of drinks arrive at our table, served by a pair of small hands, with a tiny little broken heart tattoo on a ring finger and dark purple nail polish.

โ€œThanks, Gigi,โ€ I say, lifting my head and grinning at her.

She smirks at me. โ€œNo problem, hotshot. Dad wanted me to give you these but says itโ€™s last call.โ€

โ€œDamn,โ€ Jason groans. โ€œI didnโ€™t realize it was so late.โ€

โ€œYou can take off. Iโ€™m good.โ€

โ€œYou sure?โ€

โ€œYeah.โ€

He turns to Gigi whoโ€™s taken our empties and is starting to walk away.

I try. I try really hard to not let my gaze drop to her short, cut-off sweat shorts, to the length of her legs beneath them. The shape of her calves or to notice the dark red polish on her toenails.

I fail.

Miserably.

Thereโ€™s something so damn attractive about her petite size.

I grip my new beer bottle harder and take a healthy swig.

โ€œHey Gigi,โ€ Jason calls out. โ€œKeep this loser company for me so he doesnโ€™t get shit-faced before practice tomorrow?โ€

โ€œMe?โ€ Sheโ€™s turned, gaze bouncing from me to Jason and she frowns. โ€œYou need my help?โ€

โ€œNoโ€”โ€

โ€œYesโ€”โ€ Jason says at the exact time I disagree.

She smirks at Jason. โ€œSeems to me he doesnโ€™t need it.โ€

โ€œSometimes this asshole doesnโ€™t know what he needs.โ€ He slaps the table and slides out, holding out his arm in a gesture for Gigi to take his spot.

โ€œJasonโ€”โ€

He shrugs and holds out his fist. โ€œIโ€™ll pay the tab. You get home safely, yeah?โ€

โ€œYeah,โ€ I grumble and return his fist pump.

โ€œAnd youโ€™ll thank me for this someday, too.โ€

I watch him go, frowning.

What the fuck does that mean?

โ€œI can pretend to sit here until he leaves if you want to be alone.โ€

Her voice does something to me. Like a bug is happily leaping in my gut when she looks down at me, all that teal hair and new nose ring and tattoo peeking out from the wide collar of her sweatshirt.

Itโ€™s the collar Iโ€™m noticing. And the tattoo.

Not the thin, white strap of her bra.

Shit.

โ€œYou can sit. Please. You want Jasonโ€™s last beer?โ€

โ€œNah.โ€ Her nose crinkles and the soft light above the bar flints on her nose ring. I quickly look away as she slides in. โ€œIโ€™ve never acquired the taste for beer. No matter what kind it is, it always tastes like wet cardboard.โ€

โ€œYou know what cardboard tastes like?โ€

โ€œYeah. Like beer.โ€ She grins.

I grin back.

This girl is funny. Well-traveled.

Divorced. Cute. And fun.

The exact kind of temptation I do not need in my life right now. Yet as I sit across from her, taking in every little nuance about her like the freckle on the back of her hand, that broken heart tattooโ€ฆ I canโ€™t for the life of me think of an excuse to leave.

Hooked On Her

Ice Kings series

by Stacey Lynn

Blurb:

Tessa Chauncy is the best kind of trouble. Beautiful, sweet and completely off limits. Iโ€™ve sat by and watched other men drool after her and forced myself to stay in check. Hey, Iโ€™m in the NHL… I have self-control in spades.ย

Except when it comes to her.

With the bat of her lashes and quick whip of that sharply pointed tongue Tessa can knockย grown men to their knees. Iโ€™ve seen them wither and crumble under her confident stareโ€” something Iโ€™m pretty sure she learned from sparring with me,ย thankyouverymuch.

But Iโ€™m not just falling for her. Iโ€™m down for the count.ย

Sheโ€™s the girl I wanted, when wanting her was wrong.ย ย

Sheโ€™s also my new roommate–

And oh yeah, my best friendโ€™s little sister.

Heaven help me, Iโ€™m probably going to get his fist to my face or his hockey stick shoved in very dangerous places for what Iโ€™m about to do, but I donโ€™t think I care anymore.ย

Iโ€™m in love with my best friendโ€™s little sisterโ€ฆ.and Iโ€™m done waiting.

Excerpt:

I scoop more chicken onto a folded chunk of naan and moan as I savor the taste. There are some decent restaurants where I live, all within walking distance, which is a bonus, but none are as good as Tandorโ€™s. I canโ€™t even piece together what makes it so delicious but itโ€™s mouth-watering amazing.

โ€œJesus, Tessa. Can you not sound like youโ€™re having an orgasm when you eat?โ€

I choke on my chicken and wash it down with my water. โ€œDonโ€™t like it, you can leave.โ€

โ€œBut then I wonโ€™t be able to share with you why Iโ€™m here.โ€

The chicken Iโ€™ve devoured rolls in my stomach. Obviously itโ€™s not because heโ€™s a nice guy. I lean back in my chair. โ€œWhat is it?โ€

He huffs a laugh and I hate he looks so damn good, smirking at me, shaking his head like Iโ€™m some amusing little thing.

โ€œYouโ€™re cute, Tessa. I ever tell you that?โ€

โ€œI think the day you took me to get stitches in my head, yeah. You bopped me on the nose with a finger and said โ€˜cute and tough, niceโ€™ before ignoring me the rest of the weekend.โ€

Iโ€™m mortified with myself. Heโ€™s not supposed to know these things, know how much I remember every.single.encounter with him ever.

His mouth opens a bit and he stares at me. Yeah. That dose of word vomit probably surprises the hell out of him too. But hell, in for a penny. He says he doesnโ€™t give a shit about what Sawyer thinks? He should know what I think.

โ€œIโ€™m pretty sure thatโ€™s the day I started having a crush on you.โ€

He doesnโ€™t take his eyes off me as he chews on what I think is chicken tikki masala. Slowly, he swallows and sets his own fork down. Leaning forward, elbows on the table, Iโ€™m tempted to drop my gaze to his mouth and watch his full lips move so sexily as he opens his mouth and asks, โ€œWant to know when it started for me? When I started facing the reality that it was my best friendโ€™s little sister that made my dick hard in my dreams at night and when I was on the road?โ€

Scoring Off the Ice

Ice King series

by Stacey Lynn

Blurb:

Sometimes scoring off the ice leads to the greatest rewards.

Iโ€™ve had only one goal in life since I first strapped on a pair of skatesโ€”make Americaโ€™s pro hockey league.

I left Denmark. I made it to the top. Now, Iโ€™m determined to be the best. No distractions. I eat, sleep, and breathe hockey.

Until my birthday when my teammates convince me to live a little.

But living a little takes on a whole new meaning when less than a year later Iโ€™m confronted with a crying baby on my doorstep, drooling on a note that declares heโ€™s mine.

Suddenly, I’m a single dad in way over my head.

There is no playbook for situations like this.

Luckily, I have Paisley.

My gorgeous neighbor, my long-time crush, and nowโ€”my savior.

Sheโ€™s there any time I need her.

Helping. Guiding. Gazing at me with those green eyes that make me feel capable of this after all.

With her at my side, Iโ€™m quickly learning thereโ€™s more to life than winning a hockey game.

Excerpt:

โ€œWho are you?โ€ I donโ€™t like calling her the woman. Iโ€™ve wondered her name for months since she started appearing in that doorway so close to mine.

She turns to me and in her arms is the baby. Sheโ€™s holding a bottle and the baby is drinking. Quiet little sounds come from it and she grins down at the baby in her arms before tilting her head at me.

โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œYou. What is your name?โ€

โ€œPaisley. Are you Mikah?โ€

She must want money if she knows my name. Perhaps sheโ€™s a fan. A puck bunnyโ€”thatโ€™s what my teammates call the girls who follow players and only want one thing from them.

โ€œHow did you know?โ€ I wish she wasnโ€™t so pretty. Sometimes it hurts to talk when all I want to do is look at her.

She points to an envelope on the table. The note.

โ€œItโ€™s on the outside. I didnโ€™t know if it was your name or the babyโ€™s, so I took a guess. Are you… are you okay?โ€

โ€œA stranger shows up at my door with a baby in her arms, saying itโ€™s mine. How okay am I supposed to be?โ€ I wander to the table while I ask.

Iโ€™m surprised by her gentle laugh.

โ€œI suppose this isnโ€™t your typical Friday night.โ€

She is funny. If I didnโ€™t think I might throw up, I might laugh. No. This is not my typical Friday night. Mine are for resting. Not life-changing drama.

I say nothing and grab the envelope. I stare at it for a moment. Perhaps if I do not open it, I can pretend this didnโ€™t happen. My fingers shake as I tear it open.

The envelope is larger than normal and thick and Iโ€™m careful as I pull out several folded papers.

The top one is the most important though as I instantly see my name, written in scrolling black ink.

MIKAH,

His name is Angelo.

*****

Review:

Scoring Off the Iceย is a sweet, slow-build romance about a couple of strangers (who have been long-distance lusting after each other) getting thrown into sending time with each other thanks to an unexpected bundle of joy. Time spent with baby Angelo allows Mikah and Paisley to get to know each other and to finally figure out if their attraction to each other can turn into something more.

I didn’t realize that when I chose this one that it falls into the New Adult category. I don’t usually read these – I’m a woman of a certain age (*snicker*) and I tend to just not connect with the characters or their situation. And while this one was better than some I’ve read, I did feel like the ending was a little rushed and handled poorly by the characters.

You knew going in that there was definitely going to have to be some baby-mama drama, and there was, but Mikah handled it very poorly and I felt that Paisley forgave him a little too easily. It was in the last 10% of the book, so since it happened at the end that’s what I left with instead of the many enjoyable pages of Mikah learning to be a dad and Paisley & Mikah getting to know each other … but I do think maybe a little more attention should have been given to the issue.

This one is getting a lot of positive reviews so just because NA is not my cup of tea doesn’t mean that it isn’t a good read. Lynn is a strong writer and her storylines are solid with interesting characters. I enjoyed getting to know both Paisley & Mikah and I’m definitely intrigued by some of Mikah’s older teammates so I’ll be giving other books in this series a go.

FTC Disclaimer

I have received ARCs of books free from NetGalley (and many moons ago from BookTrib.com) to review but the majority of the stories are either bought by me or provided for free from the publisher, author, or PR company. The opinions I share are my own and in no way are influenced by an author or publisher. There is no promise of a positive review by any party and there is no additional compensation. Unless otherwise noted, I am not affiliated with any contest or other event mentioned on this blog and I do not receive a paid endorsement for any post.
