How to Lose a Fiancé

Book #2 in the Greek Billionaires series

by Stefanie London

Blurb:

Sophia Andreou has always been the “good daughter” who tried to keep her domineering father happy. She followed the rules and did everything that was asked of her. But this time, her father is asking too much. The family company is crumbling, and her father has arranged a marriage to a Greek billionaire who can save their property business. What?! Umm no thank you. If Cinderella can dress up to win a prince, surely Sophia can do the opposite and ditch hers…

Dion Kourakis has come a long way from being an orphan with only a single friend to his name. Now he runs a billion-dollar investment company and has the respect of everyone in Europe. His charming personality covers a lot of emotional scars, including his desire to make his mentor proud. Dion doesn’t exactly want a bride to go along with his next business deal, and he plans on letting the lass down gently when they meet…

Only, his future bride has turned out to be nothing like what he thought she’d be. She’s quirky and has a habit of turning up to social events in strange outfits. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out what she’s up to, but the harder she tries to convince him she’d be an awful wife, the more he wants to convince her they’d be perfect together.

(CAN THIS BE READ AS A STANDALONE? Yes! Each book in this series features a different couple, so they can be read in any order.)

Excerpt:

He expected some hesitation from her over the marriage thing. Hell, he’d hesitated himself. It had taken him a full two weeks to process her father’s offer—or rather, ultimatum—and come to grips with the idea of marrying a stranger. Seeing his mentor, Elias, hooked up to half a dozen different machines after having a fall in his home, with tubes coming out of every orifice, had finally pushed him over the edge.

Closure was now within Dion’s grasp, he could shut the final page of his father’s book. He wanted that feeling so bad he could taste it…so bad he would marry a stranger.

“We have plenty of time to get to know one another.” Dion motioned for her to follow him outside. “Your father told me that you’ve been working in the family business.”

“That’s right. I’ve been doing some general admin,” she replied. “And I have my own virtual assistant business, too.”

The sun had set some time ago, but the lights dotted around the garden brightened the front of the house. He unlocked the car and held the door for her.

“Ah, so you’re a businesswoman. I’m sure we’ll have a lot to talk about, then.”

“Sure, although it’s not real passion in life, to be honest.” She looked at him expectantly, as though wanting an invitation to elaborate.

“What would you rather be doing?” he asked.

The car’s engine rumbled as he pulled out of the circular path in front of the four-car garage. A warm breeze carried the salty tang of the ocean into the car.

“You know, I’m really passionate about taxidermy.” Sophia nodded as though this was the most normal thing to say. “There’s just something about animals that fascinates me.”

“Taxidermy?” He frowned. “Like, stuffing dead animals?”

“Stuffing or mounting,” she said. “It includes both.”

Was she for real? Her expression didn’t reveal even a sliver of amusement.

“I see it as a way to prolong an animal’s life,” she explained. “I know it might seem a little strange, but trust me. When I bring my collection over, you’ll see how wonderful it is.”

He gulped. “Your collection?”

“Yes, I have a huge collection. Squirrels and racoons and a couple of cats that I found. Strays, you know. Lots of people think they have time for a pet and then they just dump them. I even have a fox. She’s a real beauty. I was thinking we could put her in the living room. Or maybe the foyer, so she can greet guests.” She clapped her hands together. “Baroness Sasha Foxington III would absolutely love that.”

Baroness. Sasha. Foxington the fucking third.

Was he in a nightmare right now?

The Lemon Sisters

Wildstone #3

by Jill Shalvis

Blurb:

When Brooke’s older sister, Mindy, shows up at her door with her three kids in tow, she barely recognizes her sibling who looks like she’s on the verge of a total breakdown. While adventurous, wanderlust Brooke was always the problem child, eager to slip free of Wildstone and its small-town constraints, Mindy was the golden child, who never had a hair out of place or a GPA below 4.0. The Mindy that arrives at Brooke’s apartment however, is a far cry from the ever-perfect doctor’s wife.

Brooke’s further stunned when Mindy asks to trade places with her for a few days so she can pick up her pieces and put herself back together. What Mindy doesn’t realize is that Brooke is just as broken. Her sister needs her though, so Brooke takes the kids and returns to Wildstone.

But how does one go home after seven years away and what feels like a lifetime of secrets? It doesn’t take long for Brooke to come face-to-face with her past, in the form of one tall, dark, sexy mistake. But Garrett’s no longer interested, or so he says. Only his words don’t match his actions, leaving Brooke feeling things she long ago shoved deep.

The sisters begin to wonder if the childhood taunts were true, are they lemons in life? In love? True or not, they know one thing—you can’t run far enough to outpace your demons. And when long-dead secrets surface, they’ll have to overcome their differences and learn that sometimes the one person who can help you the most is the one you never thought to ask.

Excerpt:

“Okay,” she said. “Time for me to go to bed.”

“Or you’re running,” he said. “Again.”

She closed her eyes and told herself to ignore the soft taunt. No matter what they’d been – or hadn’t been – to each other, she wasn’t looking for love with anyone, and certainly not a wash and repeat with the one man who could destroy her. It wasn’t as if she’d been a monk. She’d dated, but she hadn’t let anyone in. Not ever. Even Cole had complained about the brick walls she’d encased her emotions in.

And he was right. She could get involved to a point, but she always pulled back.

“You don’t have to run from me, you know,” Garrett said. “There’s no reason for there to be anything but honesty between us.”

Yes, there was… “Maybe I’m just not feeling it.”

Another soft laugh. “Okay.”

“Hey,” she said and poked a finger in his pec. His hard, ungiving, sexy pec. “If I was feeling it, you’d know.”

“Yeah? How?” he challenged.

“I’d be …flirty. I certainly wouldn’t be thinking of all of your faults.”

He grinned. How like a man to not be worried about his faults.

“So what are these so-called faults?” he asked, curious. Still not concerned.

“Well, for starters, you’re wearing black knit boxers with bananas on them.”

This made him laugh outright. “Someone sent me a subscription box. They come once a month. Last month’s pair had cocks all over them.”

“Like … chickens, or…?”

He was still smiling. “If you’re curious, I’ll be happy to wear them tomorrow and give you a peek.”

“Whatever,” she said. “And the fact that some woman sent you a subscription to undies is another reason I’m not feeling it. You’ve stayed friends with every single person you’ve ever met.”

“And that’s a fault?”

She shrugged. Of course it wasn’t a fault. It was the opposite of a fault. “Well, except for me, of course.”

“Because you don’t answer phone calls, texts, emails…” He tilted his head. “Tell me something.”

Oh boy. “What?”

“Why did you and your last boyfriend break up? That Cole guy.”

“I told you, he’s my boss.”

“But you’re sleeping together,” he said, his eyes holding hers prisoner. “Or you were.”

“How do you know that?”

He smiled grimly. “You just told me.”

Dammit. She crossed her arms over her chest. “We’re not together if that’s what you’re asking.”

“Why?”

“Why what?” she asked.

“Why aren’t you together?” he pressed.

“Because I don’t like him like that.”

Did his eyes warm very slightly, or was that her imagination? “Because you’re just not feeling it?” he asked mockily, using her words.

She rolled her eyes. “You think you’re funny. How about we talk about you. Tell me about the girlfriend you said you don’t have. The one who called you the other day for a hookup.”

“It wasn’t a hookup. She dumped me.”

She snorted. “Right. You expected me to believe a guy who looks like you do, and is funny and smart like you are, got dumped?”

“Actually, I expect you to believe whatever I tell you.” He shifted close until they were knee to knee. “Because I’ve never lied to you, Brooke. Never will.”

Review:

Shalvis is one of the best at creating real people and real situations.  In The Lemon Sisters, she perfectly blends together romance, women’s fiction, and family drama to deliver a beautiful tale of connecting to others & finding home again.

After a tragic accident, Brooke has cut herself off from those she loves.  She’s coping, but not dealing, and a visit from her desperate sister brings it all back to the surface.  And forces her to confront those she’s hurt.

Mindy has lost herself in being a wife, mother, and business owner.  She’s feeling overwhelmed & unseen and she is afraid of what it means to her marriage.  Desperate, she turns to the sister she barely knows anymore for help.  And sets both of them on a path to facing ghosts and old hurts.

I really enjoyed how both of the sisters played a starring role in the book – their individual well-being and their relationship with each other, and with their SOs, is equally important.  But even with so much going on, Shalvis handles it fairly and none of it feels shorted.  I ended it feeling like I understood everyone’s situation, how they had gotten where they were at the beginning, and felt good about how they managed to get to their HEA.

(Part of a series but each one is pretty much a stand alone.)

Excerpt:

She was so bad at figuring men out, she thought miserably.

“I want to say no, but…” She yawned again. “Sorry.”

“It’s okay, Shelby.” Standing up, Sam reached down for her hand and gently pulled her to her feet. “Can I see you tomorrow?”

Frowning, she looked up at him. “You mean to hang out again?”

His dark eyes blinked at her several times as if not understanding her question. “Um…I was hoping to take you out properly – dinner and whatever else it is you might like to do. Other than sailing, you never really answered my question that night.”

Taking a step back, now it was Shelby who didn’t seem to get it. “Why do you want to take me to dinner? We…we hung out tonight and…there’s no hard feelings. I mean, I’m still sorry for not being honest with you the night we met, but…don’t feel like you need to keep hanging out with me.”

The fierce look from earlier was back as he took a step toward her.  “Are we back to that again? Why exactly do you think I’m here, Shelby?” he asked, frustration practically bristling off of him.

“I…like I said…I figured we were just hanging out to…you know…talk things out. And we have.” Hopefully he couldn’t see her slight tremble. She wasn’t used to someone questioning her like this.

But then again, she wasn’t used to dealing with anyone quite like Sam.

He took another step toward her. “Is that why you agreed to let me come over? Because you needed to clear your conscience? Or thought that I needed to?”

“Um…I don’t know. Maybe.”

Another step toward her. “You want to know why I’m here?” He didn’t wait for her to respond. “I’m here because for two damn weeks you’ve been all I can think about. Seeing you earlier in the library parking lot had me feeling like I won the damn lottery – like I was getting a second chance with you!” Another step and now he towered over her. “But more than anything, I’m here because you’re someone I want to know better, dammit!”

“Sam, I…”

“But if that’s not what you want – if I’m not someone you want to know – then say something right now, Shelby,” he demanded. “Right now, before my feelings grow even deeper. Because believe it or not, what I felt for you that night at the bar is nothing compared to how I feel right now.”

She gasped softly and her foolish heart began its wild dance again. Swallowing hard, she looked up at him – saw the sincerity and the anguish in those dark depths. “I…” She paused and collected her thoughts which were going a million miles a minute in her head. “How do you feel?”

It was something she needed to know. It was one thing if he was casually interested in her – which was what she expected him to say. But what if it were more? What if it were something deep and warm and wonderful and scary and everything she was feeling too?

Reaching out, Sam cupped her face in his hands and rested his forehead against hers. “I feel like you’re someone I need to know.”

His voice was low and gruff and rumbly enough that she felt it all the way down to her toes.

How could she possibly explain to him that she was too afraid to believe him? That she didn’t have the confidence in herself to believe him?

As if sensing her thoughts, he quietly said, “You’ve been brutally honest with me all night, Shelby. Don’t stop now. Tell me what you’re thinking.”

There really was something about Sam that made her feel like she could say anything – even if she shouldn’t.

“I guess I’m afraid to believe that you really want to get to know me,” she admitted softly. “I’m nothing special, Sam. I’m not the type of girl you usually…”

He placed one finger across her lips to stop her flow of words. “Please don’t keep throwing that back in my face.” He closed his eyes as if in pain. “I know I’ve done a lot of stupid things and I’ve made a lot of bad choices, but that has nothing to do with you and me. When I saw you that night, all I remember thinking was…finally, there she is.”

Her eyes went wide at the intensity of his words. No one had ever said anything like that to her before. She wasn’t the kind of girl or woman who caused that kind of reaction – she knew that and she was okay with it. But after seeing the look on Sam’s face as he spoke, Shelby knew she had to have more – needed to see where this went and what would come from an admission like his.

“Wow,” she whispered, because it’s all she could force herself to say.

The smile Sam gave her was one of sweet relief. Unable to help herself, she placed her hand on his chest, and, feeling his rapid heartbeat, she grew bold. Her hand smoothed up and over his shoulder and then raked up into his hair. Up on her tiptoes, she pressed her lips to his and prayed she wouldn’t panic or freak out again.

When his arms slowly banded around her waist, Shelby knew this time was different. He was being cautious and careful and, undoubtedly, holding back so he didn’t spook her. The kiss was chaste – slow and sweet. Only this time, she was the one to seek more. Her tongue tentatively reached out and skimmed along his bottom lip and she heard his sharp intake of breath. It made her bold. Pressing herself more firmly against him, she reveled in the feel of his warm, hard body. And when he maneuvered them back over the sofa, she felt her excitement grow.

Sam sat and gently guided Shelby down so he could cradle her in his lap and, if anything, she thought it was the perfect position for them. His arms were around her, holding her securely to him, all the while their kiss just continued. There wasn’t the same intensity as there was the night they met, and that was more than okay with her. She was enjoying this – the way they were slowly getting acquainted with each another.

Squirming slightly against him, she gulped for air when Sam broke the kiss and gazed at her face. His breath was coming just as raggedly as hers and she wished more than anything that she didn’t need oxygen quite so much because she already missed the feel of his mouth on hers.

One of his hands came up and took the clip out of her hair. She let out a small moan of pleasure because it had been bothering her all night, but when that same hand anchored up into her hair and began massaging her scalp, it felt like she had died and gone to heaven.

Good lord, if a three-second scalp massage feels this good, what would sex with him be like?

Hopefully she’d find out.

Diving in for another kiss, Shelby was pleasantly surprised that Sam seemed just as anxious as she was for another taste. She twisted and turned in his lap until she was straddling him and it was like she didn’t even recognize herself. She wasn’t normally this forward or – dare she say, aggressive? – but there was no way for her to fight what she was feeling. For two weeks she had kicked herself every day for running like she did and now that she was getting a second chance, she was taking it.

With everything she had, apparently.

They kissed, they rolled over and stretched out on the sofa until Sam was on top of her and Shelby wrapped herself completely around him. So many times she thought to break their kiss and simply ask him to stay – to move things into the bedroom – but his hands and mouth kept distracting her until she didn’t know her own name, let alone where they were half the time.

At some point – it could have been minutes later, it could have been hours – Sam raised his head and smiled down at her. He was so handsome, so sexy, so…everything she ever fantasized about…and he was here with her.

“Shelby,” he said, low and thick. “Damn.”

Yeah. She knew exactly what he meant.

Her hand smoothed up his back and up into his hair in hopes of guiding his mouth back to hers, but…he moved.

He stood.

She stayed where she was on the sofa and looked up at him in confusion.

“I should go,” he said after a long moment.

“Go?”

He nodded. “Dinner tomorrow night, right?”

He was leaving? Now? Seriously?

“Um…”

Doing a move that was clearly becoming his thing, Sam reached for her hand and gently pulled her to her feet. He kissed her one last time on the lips before letting out a low growl. Clearing his throat, he said, “You know how badly I want to stay, right?”

Shelby nodded and wanted to say she felt the same, but she couldn’t seem to make her voice work.

He hugged her tight. “But I don’t think it’s the right thing to do,” he said, and her only consolation was that he sounded as miserable about it as she felt. “Let me take you out tomorrow.” He pulled back and studied her face. “I want to do this right. I feel like I came on too strong that night and…and I’m not willing to do anything that you might regret.”

Well, damn. He was sweet, sexy, funny, and considerate? How was she supposed to resist?

“That night…that was my own issue, Sam. It wasn’t about you. Not really. I want you to know that.”

With a lopsided grin, he pulled her back into his embrace. “Thank you for saying that.”

“It’s the truth.”

Slowly they broke apart and walked over to the front door. He opened it and kissed her one more time. “You are pure temptation. You know that, right?”

Blushing, she shook her head.

“It’s true.” Tucking a finger under her chin, his expression turned serious. “Thank you for inviting me over and for giving me another chance.  I’ll pick you up tomorrow at seven. Will that work?”  He reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone so they could exchange numbers. Once that was done, he kissed her one last time and walked out the door.

And Shelby swore part of her heart went with him.

Excerpt:

“I like the dreamy look on your face.”

“It isn’t often I’m thrown into a good memory of my mom,” he admitted.

More often than not he thought about the bitter ones of his dad and his lack of attention, his many wives, and losing the one parent who loved him unconditionally.

“Do you know the key ingredient that differentiates a Snickerdoodle from a sugar cookie?” she asked.

He shook his head. “Can’t say that I do.” That memory escaped him.

“Cream of Tartar. It’s a leavening agent that gives the cookie its signature tangy flavor and chewy texture.”

“She made them every Christmas,” he said, hearing his own wistful tone. “We left them out for Santa.”

Emily smiled at his memory. “I’ll make them for you one day if –“ She shook her head.

If you’re still here went unsaid.

“Can I take this to mean you’re not mad at me anymore?” he asked, leaning in on one arm.

She poured the brownie mix into the pan and sighed. “I was never mad at you. At first I was just scared to death. Then I was frustrated with dad and the situation. You being here, supporting his dream doesn’t help. But I’m not angry at you.”

The heaviness in his chest eased. But he was going to throw her an even more difficult question. He wasn’t sure if he expected an answer and given he didn’t know if he could answer in return, it wasn’t exactly fair.

“Okay then, good. What about before we came back? Are you still running from what we felt?”

She’d stuck a chocolate covered finger into her mouth and at the question, her eyes opened wide. The question had been bad timing on his part because his dick hardened at the sight of that finger in her mouth. He wanted her lips wrapped around his cock.

But, they had important things to discuss. “Running?” she asked on a squeak.

He pushed himself to standing and strode around the island, coming up to her and pushing her back against the counter. “Running,” he confirmed. “Not physically but emotionally.”

“I can’t let myself get too attached to you, Parker. You’re leaving. Sooner not later. Just because we don’t discuss it doesn’t make it not true. I need to protect myself.”

Her words sliced through him because they were true. Because he hated them. Because she was right and he didn’t want her to be. So he did the only thing he could do in the moment.

“But we have now.”

Susan Mallery, The Summer of Sunshine and Margot

This one is in my TBR pile and I’m so looking forward to reading it!

*****

The Summer of Sunshine and Margot

by Susan Mallery

Hardcover: 368 pages

Publisher: HQN; Original edition (June 11, 2019)

Blurb:

The Baxter sisters come from a long line of women with disastrous luck in love. But this summer, Sunshine and Margot will turn disasters into destiny…

As an etiquette coach, Margot teaches her clients to fit in. But she’s never faced a client like Bianca, an aging movie star who gained fame—and notoriety—through a campaign of shock and awe. Schooling Bianca on the fine art of behaving like a proper diplomat’s wife requires intensive lessons, forcing Margot to move into the monastery turned mansion owned by the actress’s intensely private son. Like his incredible home, Alec’s stony exterior hides secret depths Margot would love to explore. But will he trust her enough to let her in?

Sunshine has always been the good-time sister, abandoning jobs to chase after guys who used her, then threw her away. No more. She refuses to be “that girl” again. This time, she’ll finish college, dedicate herself to her job as a nanny, and she 100 percent will not screw up her life again by falling for the wrong guy. Especially not the tempting single dad who also happens to be her boss.

Master storyteller Susan Mallery weaves threads of family drama, humor, romance and a wish-you-were-there setting into one of the most satisfying books of the year!

Excerpt:

The smile returned, although with less gut-hitting power. “I tend to fall for men who have unusual occupations or who don’t live wherever I am. A guy in a rock band, a travel photographer, a professional tennis player. One time the family I was working for took me with them to Napa. I met a guy who owned a restaurant and when the family went home, I stayed. On the bright side, he taught me how to cook.”

She looked away. “I was young and reckless and I don’t want do that anymore.” Her gaze returned to him. “I won’t bore you with the details. Let’s just say I woke up alone in a hotel room in London with no job, no boyfriend, no prospects. I flew home and moved in with my sister, then got a couple of jobs because hey, the nanny thing wasn’t working for me or the kids.”

He wasn’t sure what he’d expected to hear, but it wasn’t this. “So why are you back being a nanny now?”

“I’m good at it and I need the money. I want to do something with my life. Get an education, have a retirement account, be normal. Working as a nanny allows me to pay for school, have time to study and not have to worry about rent. I want to keep my head down and be smart. No more loser guys. I don’t want to be that girl anymore.”

The smile returned, leaving him just as speechless as before.

“More than you wanted to know,” she said. “I’m being honest. You have no reason to believe any of this. You don’t know me, which is kind of the point of the conversation, right? But I’m committed to Connor. I’m not going to walk away from him.”

“Because you’re not that girl anymore?”

“That’s the reason.”

It was too much information and he didn’t know what to do with it all. She was right—he had no reason to believe her, and yet he did. Was that dumb on his part or intuition? He had no idea.

“Is that also why you wanted to work for a woman?”

She nodded. “I’ve had a couple of dads get handsy. It’s awkward.”

“I assure you I would never—”

She shook her head. “I know. You don’t have to say anything.”

She knew? How? And what did that mean? Had he become so incredibly sexless that…that… Dear God, he couldn’t even formulate the question, let alone answer it.

She laughed. “You look confused. What I meant is you seem to be an honorable person. I appreciate that.”

“Good,” he said, not sure if it was good or not. Time to change the subject. “About your hours. Are they working for you?”

“They’re perfect.”

She was supposed to be available from 6:30 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. with the middle of the day off, five days a week. She also owed him every other Saturday and cooked dinner four nights a week.

“I’m sorry you had to work Sunday when I was on my business trip.”

“Not a problem. You and Connor were gone the previous weekend, so I had that Saturday. Declan, I’m not keeping track of every single minute. If Connor gets up early or stays up late, that’s okay. A lot of my job is being flexible.”

“Thank you.”

He confirmed she knew where all the local stores were, then pulled a credit card out of his desk drawer.

“I ordered this for you,” he said. “It will be easier than giving me receipts and having me reimburse you.” He smiled. “Don’t go to Tahiti on it.”

“Oh darn. And Connor and I were talking about taking a road trip just yesterday.” She took the card. “He seems to be outgrowing some of his pants and his athletic shoes are looking really bad. Do you want me to take him shopping or is that something you prefer to do?”

“You can do it. For the next couple of weeks, I’m going to be knee-deep in the preconstruction planning for the hotel. Once that calms down, I’ll have more time.”

“Okay. Then I’ll get what he needs right now and you can handle the rest. Anything else?”

His gaze moved from her mouth to her— He swore silently, telling himself being a jerk wasn’t allowed. He had to get a grip or, at the very least, get laid. Assuming he remembered how all that happened. He assumed it was like riding a bike—once he and the lady in question were naked, he would know what to do.

“Declan?”

He blinked. “Ah, that will be all.”

She stood and slid the credit card into her back pocket. “Have a good night.”

“You, too.”

He wasn’t sure how good it was going to be but there was a better than even chance he would be taking a shower in a bit. A long one. After he would lie alone in bed both cursing and missing the woman he’d been married to. The one who had betrayed him, then up and died before he could decide if he had forgiven her or not.

Hot Under the Collar, Roxanne St. Claire, The Dogmothers series

There’s so much to love about St. Claire’s newest series – sexy firefighter, lovable dog, meddling grandmothers … so, so much!

Hot Under the Collar

The Dogmothers #1

by Roxanne St. Claire

Release Date:  May 31, 2019

Blurb:

Firefighter Braden Mahoney is devastated when his beloved Weimaraner, Jelly Bean, fails the canine arson investigator test. Faced with the challenge of raising the money for advanced training, it’s Braden’s sweet grandmother and her best friend who suggest he use the services of the new event planner in town. Not that he needs a push in Cassie Santorini’s direction. Ever since she arrived, Braden has had his eye on the sassy Greek goddess…and can’t stop thinking about getting the rest of him on her, too.

Cassie has spent years putting family first, even moving to Bitter Bark when her mother falls in love with the local veterinarian. Having a huge new extended “family” is fun, especially when one smokeshow of a firefighter attends the gatherings, but Cassie has no plans to remain in this small town. She’s ready to pursue her big city dreams. But when Braden asks for an assist for his precious pup, Cassie agrees to help him set up a town-wide scavenger hunt. It isn’t exactly a hardship to be around those blue eyes and brawny shoulders, especially since they both agree everything – even the undeniable sparks that crackle between them – is temporary.

But when temporary gets complicated by feelings that might lead to forever, Braden and Cassie start to question the direction they’re headed. Should they follow their dreams…or their hearts? It’ll take a dog with a bad nose and a sweet soul, two particularly meddlesome grandmas, and some help from the clan that loves them to make sure Cassie and Braden follow the clues and find their way to each other’s arms.

Excerpt:

“And, Cassie, I’m going to be straight with you. I don’t believe in…permanent things.”

“You don’t?”

“Not when someone has a job like mine,” Braden admitted. “I don’t think it’s right or fair to be in a serious, long-term relationship. My work’s too dangerous, and I refuse to give someone a guarantee of a future. That—at my age of thirty-three?—usually sends women packing after a few dates.”

She considered that, studying him before asking, “So, what exactly are you proposing?”

“That we don’t fake a thing. We just give it an expiration date.”

“I don’t know,” she said. “Anything ‘real’ almost always comes with connections and plans and trust and intimacy that will lead to…side dishes and detoured dreams. And I won’t let you do that, Braden. I won’t.”

He heard the vehemence in her voice, and that just made him more certain this was a good idea. “Then we both agree it’s temporary. Nothing will be detoured, I promise. Go ahead…” He pressed her hand to the notebook. “Write that down and make it so.”

But she didn’t, still studying him. “And side dishes?”

“They can be on or off the table, Cass. You’re the one setting it.”

She shot up a dubious brow. “Do you seriously think we could date for real, spend any amount of time alone with each other, and not…” She swallowed. “Repeat that kiss?”

No. Not for a minute. “We could try.”

“Then what difference does it make if it’s real, fake, or temporary if there’s no sex?”

“Because I’m not a fan of lying, either,” he said. “So be my temporary girlfriend, and let’s just have a little fun before you blow out of Bitter Bark.”

“Fun?”

“Could be.” So much fun.

Let’s head into summer with a sexy bull rider who finds himself head over heals for the new woman in his life 😉

To Tame a Wild Cowboy

Cupid, Texas series

by Lori Wilde

Genre Adult Contemporary Romance

Publisher Avon Books

Publication Date May 21, 2019

Blurb:

New York Times bestselling author Lori Wilde’s series set in Cupid, TX continues as one free-wheeling cowboy discovers he has a child—and a chance at real love with the last woman he expected.

What would it take to tame a wild cowboy?

One minute, Rhett Lockhart is a love ‘em and leave ‘em bull rider with a slow, sexy smile, a swagger, and not a care in the world. The next, he learns his free-wheeling days are over: a baby has been abandoned in the hospital, and there’s no question: he’s the father. But from the first moment he gazes into his daughter’s eyes, he knows the moment has come to say ‘no’ to no-strings. It’s time to grow up.

Standing in his way is the baby’s foster mother, Tara Alzate, who doesn’t quite believe Rhett is ready to change his ways. Still, she’s not not immune to his considerable charms. So when he proposes a marriage of convenience and shared custody, against her better judgement, she says “I do.” Can Tara tame this wild cowboy and make her own, long-buried dreams come true?

Excerpt:

“Rhett, you may now kiss your bride.” Here it was. The moment Tara had been dreading since she’d cooked up this farcical idea. She’d made him promise to dole out nothing by a mere hint of a kiss, the barest brushing, the smallest increment of lip touching that they could get away with. He’d promised. She trusted him. He leaned in. She braced herself, locking her knees. Hang on. It’ll be over in an instant. His head dipped. She tipped her chin up. Rhett’s mouth came down on hers and for a second, he was playing by the rules and she sighed with relief, and thought, wow, this is nice . . .But the thought was premature. Her lips parted involuntarily, and she closed her eyes and sank against him. Well and completely lost.

*****

Review:

Overall, while I really enjoyed the story, the first half was more appealing to me than the beginning of the second half.  I really felt Tara’s love for Julie and how much it hurt her to think that she might lose custody.  And seeing Rhett fall in love with his little girl was just the absolute sweetest.  Their stress over the situation and Julie’s future just jumped off the page.

Then they decided to get married, which quickly went from one of convenience to something more.  I think as a couple they definitely worked.  Both characters had their flaws but they also had positives and were able to blend together quite well – Rhett’s happy-go-lucky attitude was a good complement to Tara’s more serious side.  But I just wish we’d had a chance to see them grow into their feelings more.  I think it relied too much on their history together (which they hadn’t had much in their adult years) and not enough on their current dealings with each other.

Once I accepted it though I really enjoyed where Wilde took the story.  There was a lot of self-examination going on in the last bits of the book, by both Tara and Rhett, and it worked so well in giving them a HEA ending.  Taken as a whole, To Tame a Wild Cowboy delivered an emotional journey that will leave readers with all the warm fuzzies they could want.

(Although it is part of a series, I feel like it can easily stand on its own.)

Book Review – Let Me Show You

Becca Seymour, Book Review, Let Me Show You

I’m so happy to have Becca Seymour on today to answer a few questions and share her latest book!

*****

  1. When did you know you wanted to write?

I’ve been writing on and off for the past 15 years, though largely in M/F romance. It wasn’t until I fell in love with LGBT romance about 5 years ago that I finally decided that was where my heart lay, and my proverbial pen took me. While this year I’m focusing on contemporary romance, a genre I do adore, I plan to writing a mix of genres later in the year for 2020 and 2021 releases.

  1. Do you use a pseudonym? If so, why?

I do, but it isn’t a big secret. I’m a publisher and editor, and I wanted a semblance of separation between my writing and my business.

  1. Do you ever base your characters on real people? If so, what are the pitfalls you’ve run into doing so?

Sometimes. My characters are often completely fabricated; however, several scenarios they face are often taken from real life. My characters do, however, tend to have similar traits to people I know and sometimes me, especially in relation to humour and sometime gruffness.

  1. How long on average does it take you to write a book?

Anywhere between 2 months and 15 months, depending on the schedule I’ve set myself and how many WiPs I have. This book took the longest, possibly because it was intended to be a novella for a publishing call, but once the characters came into their own, I knew there was no way that would happen.

  1. Where do you like to write?

On my laptop usually in bed, and usually when I have a super quiet house. I struggle to write when my hubby is home or in the room with me, and honestly, I have zero idea why. He is 100 percent behind me and my writing, and is crazy supportive. I can, however, happily write with my 11-year-old son in the room. He’s constantly trying to give me ideas and recommendations. He’s also determined that I name a character after him. I always go wide-eyed at this, reminding him I write romance. He just shrugs and suggests “he” could be a character who doesn’t kiss. Lol. Maybe one day.

  1. How long do you write each day?

Erm… when focused, I write for a couple of hours. When on a self-managed deadline that’s creeping in fast, I’ll put more time in over the weekends. I do, however, happily allow life to get in the way, which I don’t regret. Family time, work time, switching off and chilling are really important to me.

  1. What were your goals and intentions in this book, and how well do you feel you achieved them?

I wanted light-hearted, low-angst escapism, and I think I achieved that. Tanner and Carter are both regular guys, with regular jobs, and regular lives. You see the common thread here, right? While I love PNR and at times subgenres that include rock stars and billionaires, etc., rooting for the common guy, getting up close and personal with them, really takes me to my happy place. My aim was to give that to readers too.

  1. If you had the opportunity to live one year of your life over again, which year would you choose, and why?

21 maybe. My last year at university was pretty epic. I had such an amazing time filled with far too many parties and nights out. But every hangover was worth it. I think it was the last truly carefree year I had before the reality of adulthood came knocking and reminded me I needed to step up a little.

  1. What was the first book that made you cry?

Little Women when I was probably 8. This is still hands down one of my favourite books of all time. It made me truly appreciate the written word. From that moment forth, I was an official book addict.

  1. What are some day jobs that you have held?

My first job was a lifeguard. It was great fun. I did that for about 7 years while at school. I did a stint at McDonald’s at uni, which was an eyeopener, especially for a vegetarian! Lol. I also worked as a bartender for several years part-time too while at uni. My first full-time position was a high school English teacher when I still lived in England. It seems like so long ago. Every position has shaped me to the individual I am today, so zero regrets, and absolutely zero looking back.

After finding himself precariously wedged… naked and at the mercy of a drop-dead gorgeous construction worker, Carter hires his savior to renovate his home.

When Tanner Grady’s best friend and new niece needed him, he uprooted and relocated without a second thought. His life has since been centered on work and spending time with his family, but when he comes to the rescue of a cute vet, Tanner finds he’s a lot more interested in the homeowner than the house he’s renovating.

Excerpt:

Looking at the caller ID, I greeted, “Hey, Mom.”

“Hey, baby boy.” I smiled. In my late twenties, I was far from a baby, but she’d once told me that even at fifty I’d still be her baby. “Good day?”

“Yep. Not too bad. Nothing too hectic or crazy. You?”

“A great one. Your dad’s booked a cruise for our anniversary.” Excitement lit her words. She’d been hinting at Dad for a while about a cruise. I was pleased he’d listened. It didn’t take a lot to make my mom happy; she found joy in the smallest of things, so that he’d organized it all was pretty impressive. Mom usually organized everything, so I knew him booking the vacation for them was a big deal.

“That’s terrific. Caribbean?”

She actually squealed down the line. I pulled the phone from my ear and laughed loudly. “Yes! Carter, I’m so excited.”

“Really? I’d never have guessed.”

“Oh, hush.” She spoke over me as I laughed again. “Don’t sass your mother.”

My laughter continued. “Never, Mom. You’d tan my hide. Wouldn’t dream of it.”

“I should think not. So anything new? Any dates?”

With a groan, I rubbed my face and then stepped further into the kitchen and pulled out a glass. “Mom…,” I sighed.

“What? I worry about you. You’re so far from home and are there all alone.”

I poured myself a glass of wine and took a sip. “I know you worry, but honestly, life’s good.” Admittedly it would have been nice to hook up, but one, I didn’t do casual and never had, and two, there was no way I’d tell my mom I was afraid my penis would drop off from lack of use. “There’s nothing new either, and that’s okay. I’m liking the quiet life.”

“Hmm….” That was her tell for not being convinced. “You know, I was talking to Julie last week, and her nephew’s gay.”

“Mom,” I said with laughter, “honestly, no hookups. I do not need my mom fixing me up.”

She ignored me. “Well, he lives quite far away, but maybe a week of casual—” She cleared her throat. “—sex would do you good.”

“Jesus, Mom.” I spluttered on my mouthful of wine. Grabbing a towel, I wiped my face, catching the dribble of red wine on my chin, and wiped the countertop I’d sprayed. “Stop. I don’t need you arranging anything, okay? Please tell me you’re listening.” She was quiet. “Mom,” I said louder.

“Yes, yes, I hear you.” She sighed. “Grandbabies would be nice.”

Holy crap on toast! With wide eyes, I looked at the ceiling and counted to five. I then took a big gulp of wine before saying, “Mom.”

“Yes, baby boy?”

“I have to go. I need to grab a shower. I’m expecting someone.”

“Ooh—”

“Someone to fix the house up.” I’d heard the interest in her tone, the hope in that one syllable.

“Oh.” This time her voice dropped. I hated to kill her enthusiasm, but geez, I really needed to get off the phone.

“Love you, tell Dad I love him too. And I’ll speak to you guys later. Bye, Mom.”

“Will do.” Her tone was a bit brighter. “Love you too. Bye, honey.”

I disconnected quickly and placed my phone down. My mom, yeah, she was wonderful and drove me to absolute distraction. I knew how lucky I was. Every decision I’d ever made, my parents had always had my back. They supported me unconditionally. It was just that my mom could be a little extreme at times. I laughed into the empty room. I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Quickly finishing my wine, I looked at the time. I had just fifteen minutes until the contractor was due. I’d left it late to organize myself, still a little in a tizz after the conversation with my mom and the mention of babies. I glanced around the room at the disorderly mess. Every time I did so, I regretted it.

I detested chaos, and that was what the house felt like. The place was still strewn with my moving boxes, but I had yet to see the point in unpacking. Not necessarily because I planned to move, but rather, the whole house needed a lot of work, so I knew I’d have to pack my things up for any work on the house to start.

I really hoped this Tanner guy would be the person who could finally help me out. I’d had two other quotes, one local and one from out of town. Both were crazy high, and neither would be able to start for another five months or so. I was running out of options. This guy had come recommended to me by one of my clients, but I didn’t want to get my hopes up.

I sighed in defeat as I looked around. I’d have to continue ignoring it all until I finally had the place fixed up. I headed upstairs, careful to miss the couple of steps that had loose boards, and headed to the main bathroom. I had an en suite, but the shower didn’t work, so it was the pearlescent green suite I headed toward. The sickly porcelain made me shudder every time I laid eyes on it. It was clean though, so there was that.

I hopped into the shower, lathered myself up, and quickly rinsed off. That was when I heard the knock at the door. “Shoot.” I quickly turned off the taps, stepped out and grabbed a towel. In my haste to get myself together and then answer the door, the dodgy floorboard didn’t even register until my foot slammed through it, snagging my ankle and bringing me to my knees.

I yelled as I fell, and cursed. Wincing, I looked at my predicament, trying to yank my foot out as I did so. A loud groan slipped past my lips. This was no good. I was wedged, and it appeared I’d lost my towel in my fall. Just great.

Review:

If you love your romance without a lot of angst (which I do most of the time), Seymour delivers beautifully.  Tanner and Carter have a fun first meet that kinda makes it hard to ignore their attraction to each other but they do try.  Once their feelings overcome that whole contractor/client thing though, it is pretty much a done deal.

Tanner & Carter complement each other quiet well and work to create a nicely-developed relationship.  There is a little trouble at work for Carter but he does his best to handle it, with support from Tanner & friends.  It adds that little bit of drama to an otherwise smooth read of strangers becoming friends then becoming even more.

If you prefer warm fuzzies (and some heat) to commotion and hullabaloo in your romance, Let Me Show You is a perfect choice.  With characters to pull for, a romance to give you feels, and enough steam to keep you turning pages, Seymour’s latest has it all.

Excerpt:

Sweet Reunion by Stacy Claflin

Magnolia Kendrick jumped from the booth and darted between the tables, avoiding waiters and waitresses. She didn’t slow until she reached the bathroom. Closing the stall door behind her, she leaned against the wall and took in a deep breath of heavily-sweetened air.

That had been close. Too close.

Once her heart rate returned to normal, she exited the stall. An older lady shot her a glare. Probably because she hadn’t heard a flush.

Maggie flashed her a quick smile and went to the mirror to fix her makeup, though it didn’t need it. She only needed another minute or two to pull herself together before rejoining Aunt Lucille—the reason she’d fled to the bathroom.

Auntie had a good heart, bless her, but the woman couldn’t take a clue. Or a flat-out request.

Maggie would just have to try again. What other option was there? She lived with her great-aunt, who had tried to set her up with practically every eligible bachelor in Indigo Bay.

Now at Figaro’s, the restaurant owned by a distant cousin about half an hour from their town, Auntie was attempting another set-up.

Lord have mercy. It was almost enough for Maggie to head back home to Georgia—to the one place she could never show her face again.

Almost.

Maggie wanted nothing to do with a relationship of any kind. That was part of the reason she’d moved to Indigo Bay. A fresh start in a town where people didn’t know her problems.

She stood tall and practiced her smile. It was her best feature, unless she listened to the people who adored her too-thick and too-curly dark hair. Long as it was, it was a nightmare. But she hated the way she looked when it was shorter.

The bathroom door flung open. “Maggie!”

Maggie turned to find her cousin Savannah. It wasn’t unusual to find a relative at Figaro’s. “Hi, Savannah.”

“Auntie said you might be in here.”

Maggie put her makeup back in her purse. “Did she send you to find me?”

“She said you ran off like a chicken with its head cut off.” Savannah raised an eyebrow, clearly wanting to know more.

“Can’t a girl use the bathroom?” Maggie adjusted her skirt.

“Is everything okay, darlin’?”

It would be if Aunt Lucille would quit trying to set her up with every available bachelor within a twenty-mile radius of Indigo Bay.

Savannah stepped closer and put a hand on Maggie’s arm. “Everyone worries about you, you know.”

Maggie smiled as sugary sweet as she could. “I appreciate the concern, but I’m fine. Hey, Auntie wasn’t talking to anyone, was she?”

Savannah fanned herself. “You mean that new server, Emilio?”

Wonderful. Aunt Lucille was probably planning Maggie’s date with Emilio at that moment.

“You don’t like him?” Savannah frowned.

Maggie sighed. “I don’t even know him.”

“I wouldn’t mind getting to know him. Did you see those eyes? Blue as a clear lake.”

“Must’ve missed those. Take care, okay? Say hello to Auntie Charlotte for me.”

“I will.” Savannah gave a little wave. “Tell me if you go out with Emilio. I want to hear all about it.”

Maggie forced a smile. There would be no date. She’d managed to avoid all of Aunt Lucille’s attempts. She could do it again. Maybe the tickle in her throat would turn into something more if she was lucky.

As her cousin headed for a stall, Maggie made her way out into the hallway. She’d far prefer to stay in the bathroom until lunch was over, but Auntie would just send more ladies after her until Maggie returned.

Maggie was so busy thinking about what she would say that she bumped into someone.

She looked up. “I’m so sorry. I didn’t—”

Her gaze locked with a familiar but nearly-forgotten set of dark brown eyes that appeared as surprised to see her as she was to see them. Maggie’s heart skipped a beat, then her pulse drummed through her body. Her cheeks warmed, heat spreading across her face.

Canyon Leblanc.

He still had the same effect on her he’d had so many years earlier, despite the fact that she’d nearly forgotten about him. Not because she’d wanted to, but because life had taken them their separate ways and they’d lost touch.

He was just as gorgeous as ever, if not more so. Tan, neatly dressed. His dark hair was longer than it had been so many years before—and it suited him.

A waitress rushed by, bumping Maggie and nearly throwing her against her old friend. He still wore the same aftershave.

A wave of first-love emotions shoved their way to the surface. Feelings that had overwhelmed her younger self but she’d never allowed herself to act upon. Instead, she’d pined for him.

Then he’d exited from her life.

Now things had changed so much. Too much.

No doubt about it—he was definitely more attractive now. He’d grown out of his boyish good looks and had matured into a ruggedly handsome man. His deep brown eyes sent a shiver to her very core.

Maggie took a step back so she couldn’t smell him. So she could think straight.

She didn’t have the time to get distracted by a handsome face—especially not the one in front of her.

They’d been staring at each other for too long. Someone needed to say something.

Maggie cleared her throat. “Canyon?”

He stared at her, his expression practically unreadable. “Maggie.”

She struggled to find words, so she cleared her throat again just to give herself another moment to think of something to say. “I didn’t realize you were back in town. Just a pit stop?”

He shook his head. “Nope. I’m back for good. Here for a job interview, in fact.”

“You are? I’ll put in a good word. My cousin owns the restaurant.”

“Really?” Canyon arched a brow.

Something about that simple act took her breath away.

She needed to get away, and quick. Preferably before Auntie saw him and tried to set up a date.

Maggie forced a smile. “I’d love to catch up sometime. I’m staying at Aunt Lucille’s. Pop in and say hi when you get a chance. We can have some tea or walk the beach like we used to.”

Why had she just said that? The last thing she needed was him surprising her for a visit, especially at home. Auntie would want to set them up.

Awkward.

He ran his fingers through his hair. “Okay. It’d be real nice to catch up. I’d better get going. Interview in a few minutes.”

Maggie nodded. “Right. Good luck.”

Canyon headed down the hallway toward the offices.

She watched until he was out of sight then headed back to the booth where Aunt Lucille was nearly done with her meal. At least she was alone. Maggie had grown tired of thinking up excuses to avoid dates with the men her aunt constantly tried to set her up with.

“What took you so long, Maggie?” Aunt Lucille tugged on her perfectly-styled blonde hair and waited for a reply.

Maggie slid back to her spot. “I kept running into people. You didn’t have to send Savannah after me.”

Aunt Lucille dabbed her mouth with a napkin. “You’d been in there so long.”

She hadn’t, but rather than argue, Maggie took a big bite of her salmon.

“Emilio is free this Saturday afternoon.”

Maggie nearly choked on her fish. “Auntie, I appreciate your concern but—”

“But nothing. You aren’t getting any younger and you need to get your mind off the past. Isn’t that why you came to stay with me?”

“I’m twenty-four. There’s plenty of time to figure out what to do with my life.”

Aunt Lucille tilted her head and sighed. “Young people these days. You can marry rich and not have to worry about a career. In my day, ladies went to college to get their MRS degree.”

Maggie shoved a piece of broccoli into her mouth before she said something that would start an argument.

Auntie got a dreamy look on her face, then started talking about her late husband and their courting days. It may as well have been a hundred years ago, as far removed as it was from Maggie’s situation.

She fought back tears that threatened. Why couldn’t her aunt realize how painful all this was? Dating wasn’t going to solve Maggie’s problems. Getting engaged again certainly wouldn’t.

Maggie was done with men, period. She couldn’t take any more heartbreak. Once she figured out what she wanted to do with her life, she could focus on that. But that was the problem.

Nothing made her happy. She couldn’t escape the pain of her past no matter how hard she tried.
