Researching Columbia

Sometimes what you think is going to be a great idea for a novel turns out to be a whole lot of work!ย  Thatโ€™s what happens when you realize the idea you are now in the middle of isnโ€™t going to work the way you thought it would.

In THE CONSPIRACY, I got the idea for a book that started in Texas, moved to the Caribbean, and ended up in Venezuela.ย  With all the trouble country is having, I thought it would be a great setting for a Romantic Thriller.

Unfortunately, after I was well into the book and started doing the necessary research for that segment of the story, I realized the geography I needed and the rural setting didnโ€™t exist in Venezuela.

I spent days digging around in South America, looking for a rainforest that could be reasonably reached from the Caribbean island of Aruba.ย  Nothing worked.

Finally, I realized there actually was spot that exactly fit the image in my head.ย  (This happens to writers all the time.ย  No one knows why.) The spot was in Colombia, a place I had no desire to write about, but fit the story exactly.

So I went to work researching a remote area of Columbia accessible from Aruba.

Chase Garrett, the hero of THE CONSPIRACY, with the help of Harper Winston, the woman who hires him to find her missing brother, wind up in extreme danger in theย  Columbian tropical forest.ย  Itโ€™s a very unusual place that required hours of research, but in the end, it was worth it.

I had my work cut out for me, finding which animals, reptiles, and birds lived in the area.ย  Reading about the customs of the indigenous tribes, and the politic.ย  Rebel armies inhabit the forest and they donโ€™t like intruders.

The research made THE CONSPIRACY one of the most challenging books Iโ€™ve written, but hopefully its one of my most interesting.ย  I hope youโ€™ll look for THE CONPIRACY, the first of my Maximum Security series, and that you enjoy.

Until next time, very best wishes and happy reading,

Kat

Chapter One

Dallas, Texas

She knew who he was. The only man at the gala in a black tuxedo and shiny black alligator cowboy boots. Chase Garrett. The man she intended to hire to help her find her missing brother.

Harper Winston had known Chase since the day her father had thrown an obnoxiously extravagant party in honor of her sixteenth birthday.

Chase had attended with her older brother, Michael. She had spotted Chase in a swimsuit standing next to the pool, tall, with a lean, hard-muscled body, whiskey-brown eyes and thick, dark blond hair. In the sun it had gleamed like pirateโ€™s gold.

Aside from the close-trimmed beard along a jaw that had hardened with maturity, Chase hadnโ€™t changed. He still had the perfectly symmetrical features of a movie star combined with a toughness that appealed to a legion of women.

Now that she was thirty, Chase thirty-five, Harper still found him ridiculously attractive, though heโ€™d never given her more than a passing glance.

He didnโ€™t notice her tonight, though she wore an elegant strapless black gown that hugged her slender curves and set off the pale blond hair she wore long and slightly turned under. She glanced over to where he stood next to a stunning brunette, a successful lawyer in Dallas, the typical sort of woman Chase dated. Self-made career women, professors, bankers, stockbrokers. Not someone like her, the daughter of a wealthy Texas businessman, a woman who had attended Sarah Lawrence along with a bevy of other rich socialites from around the country.

It didnโ€™t matter that she was nothing like they were. That she hadnโ€™t the least interest in society. Her interests lay in the business world, in Elemental Chic, the company she had started, a line of affordable, stylish and well-made casual clothing and accessories.

She wasnโ€™t cut out for teaching or social work, she had discovered during a year of volunteer work in South America, an adventure she had undertaken mostly because her father disapproved.

Harvard Business School was where she was meant to be, she had grudgingly conceded. As her father had insisted and was eager to pay forโ€”business being one of the few interests she and Knox Winston, a self-made multimillionaire, had in common.

Unlike her father, Chase Garrett came from big money, which he disdained, though he and his two brothers had inherited a not-so-small fortune from Bass Garrett, Chaseโ€™s dad.

Harper lifted a champagne flute off a passing waiterโ€™s tray and took a sip. Chase might not notice her tonight, but he was the reason she was there. She hadnโ€™t seen him in years, but when she had read in the newspaper that he would be attending the gala, sheโ€™d seized the opportunity. She wanted to see the man he had become, the man she would be facing tomorrow morning.

It didnโ€™t matter what he thought of her as a woman. She needed his professional assistance. Her brother was in trouble. She knew it deep in her soul. Mikey had disappeared, and Chase was among the few people she trusted to help her find him.

Chase owned Maximum Security, a firm that specialized in private investigation, bail enforcement, personal protection, business and residential security. She had done her homework, knew he had offices in Phoenix and San Diego as well as here in Dallas. Chase was wildly successful, his reputation impeccable.

No matter his opinion of her, he had once been a close friend of her brotherโ€™s, a man Michael trusted completely. She needed Chaseโ€™s help, and she was determined to convince him.

She wouldnโ€™t give up until she did.

~

Standing next to Chase, Marla Chambers, his date for the evening, took a drink of her martini. โ€œYou donโ€™t look like youโ€™re having a very good time,โ€ she said. โ€œShould I be insulted?โ€

His mouth edged up. โ€œSorry. I was thinking about a case. I canโ€™t seem to get it off my mind.โ€

โ€œThe missing teenage girl?โ€

Heโ€™d mentioned her earlier. He nodded. โ€œTammy Bennett. Her parents think sheโ€™s been kidnapped. Theyโ€™ve managed to convince the police, who are in the middle of an all-out search. I think sheโ€™s a runaway.โ€

โ€œAre you working for the parents?โ€

โ€œNo. I just happened to hear something on the street today. Iโ€™d like to check it out.โ€

She eyed him with speculation. โ€œAnd youโ€™re wishing you were doing that now instead of being here with me.โ€

He hated to admit she was right. His gaze ran over the attractive brunette he had been seeing for the past couple of weeks. He enjoyed Marlaโ€™s company. Enjoyed her in bed. But it wasnโ€™t serious for either of them, and he kept thinking of the missing fourteen-year-old, a story that had been all over the news.

โ€œSheโ€™s just a kid. If my source is right, sheโ€™s in very big trouble, and I might be able to find her.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t suppose you could let the police handle it.โ€

โ€œI could. I need to check it out first, make sure the tip is real.โ€

Marla shook her head, went up on her toes and kissed his cheek. โ€œThen youโ€™d better go.โ€

โ€œWhat about you? You donโ€™t look like youโ€™re ready to leave.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m a big girl. Iโ€™ll stay awhile longer, catch a cab when itโ€™s time to go home.โ€

Chase set his scotch down on one of the linen-draped tables. โ€œThanks, Marla. I appreciate this.โ€

โ€œCall me tomorrow. Let me know what happens.โ€

โ€œIf Iโ€™m right, youโ€™ll see it on the news.โ€ Chase left Marla chatting with a friend and headed for the door. As he made his way through the throng of elegantly dressed men and women, an attractive blonde caught his eye.ย  Tall, with a slender figure, porcelain skin, and big blue eyes. She looked familiar.

As the puzzle pieces slid together, he recognized her, Harper Winston, the younger sister of his best friend in college. As a teenager, Harper had been pretty. Looking at her tonight, seeing her for the first time in years, he realized she had grown into a beautiful woman.

Unfortunately, she was a Winston. Her father, Knox Winston, was one of his least favorite people. Ruthless in business, his crooked dealings had made him a very wealthy man. But worse than his shady business enterprises was the mental abuse heโ€™d heaped on his son that had put Michael on a downward spiral into drugs. And effectively destroyed his friendship with Chase.

Chase had steered clear of the Winstons ever since. He remembered hearing Harper had moved to Houston some years back. After that, heโ€™d lost track of her and Michael, and he intended to keep it that way.

Though he had to admit as he took in Harperโ€™s sleek curves and shiny silver-blond hair, he wouldnโ€™t mind taking her to bed.

Even if the lady was of a similar mind, renewing his connection with the Winstons was the last thing he wanted. Besides, as he thought back on it, Harper had a reputation for being as cool and remote as she looked.

On his way out the door, he passed her. For an instant, her gorgeous blue eyes slid over him, and Chase felt a jolt of heat he hadnโ€™t expected. He wouldnโ€™t pursue it. Sleeping with Harper Winston, no matter how good it might be, just wasnโ€™t worth it.

His thoughts returned to the task ahead, and Chase headed for the valet stand, a harsh October wind whipping against him on the way. He needed to get home and change. He couldnโ€™t go to the Double Eagle dressed in a tuxedoโ€”the bar was in Old East Dallas, one of the meanest sections of the city.

Earlier that day as a favor to Jason Maddox, a bail enforcement agent in his office who was looking for a skip, he had contacted one of his sources. During the conversation, his informant had mentioned the missing girl. Bennie had figured the tip was worth money, and if it turned into anything, Chase would gladly pay him.

It didnโ€™t take long to reach the high-rise building on Pearl Street where he lived. He parked his silver Mercedes in the garage next to the brown Dodge Ram pickup he used for work.

Taking the elevator up to the seventeenth floor, he stepped into the entry and crossed the high-ceiling living room. An oversize sofa in a nubby cream fabric, dark brown throw pillows and lots of dark wood gave the condo a masculine tone that suited him. Stylized contemporary Western art hung on the walls.

With thirty-five hundred square feet of space, a spectacular view of the city, and a big terrace that opened off the living room and master bedroom, the condo was expensive and worth every dime.

Changing out of the tux, he pulled on a pair of worn jeans, a frayed blue denim shirt and a pair of scuffed cowboy boots. He retrieved the little .380 he carried when he wanted a weapon he could easily conceal, clipped the holster onto his belt behind his back and pulled his shirttail down over it.

It didnโ€™t take long to reach the bar. The Dodge was ten years old, a few dents here and there, the paint a little faded, which helped it blend in. But the tires were new, and under the hood, the rebuilt engine ran like a scalded dog. He parked it on the street half a block from the bar and hoped the truck wouldnโ€™t get jacked.

Looking at the trash on the sidewalk, broken beer bottles, used hypodermic needles, and drunks asleep in the gutter, part of him hoped his information was wrong and the girl wasnโ€™t there.

The other half hoped like hell she was.

If he got lucky, maybe he could get her out of there.

Kat Martin, The Conspiracy

I’m so happy today to be able to share a few words from the awesome Kat Martin about one of her favorite places (and mine too!) & her new book, plus not just one but TWO great giveaways.ย  Make sure you read to the bottom to get all of the goodies ๐Ÿ™‚

*****

The Texas Mystique

Since my new book, THE CONSPIRACY, Chase Garrett and Harper Winstonโ€™s story, is set in Texas, I thought it might be fun to talk about one of my favorite places.

There is something special about Texas.ย  My husband and I lived in Houston for a couple of months one summer and it was a wonderful experience.ย  The people in Texas are extremely friendly, and always seem to be in a good mood.

We stuffed ourselves on gourmet meals in some of the countryโ€™s finest restaurants, ate a ton of delicious Tex Mex, enjoyed Asian, Indian flatbread, and just about everything else.ย  We visited art galleries, the beach, and drove past some of the beautiful ranches in the area.

That was the good news.ย  The bad news was Houston in August is HOT.ย  Itโ€™s also muggy and sticky and you just canโ€™t wait for October to arrive. ย Or maybe September.

Two years ago, we traveled to Lubbock for a Western Writers of America conference.ย  I was reluctant to go in the summer, but it turned out to be a really great trip–hot but dry.ย  We visited the Museum of Texas Tech and met some fun people, including old-time movie star, Barry Corbin, whoโ€™s been in everything from Urban Cowboy to The Best Little Whore House in Texas.

For the past few years, Iโ€™ve been setting my stories in Dallas, one of my favorite cities. ย In THE CONSPIRACY, out January 22nd, Harper Winstonโ€™s brother has disappeared.ย  Desperate to find him, Harper is forced turn to the wealthy owner of Maximum Security, private detective, Chase Garrett, once her brotherโ€™s best friend.

But dealing with the Winston crime family wonโ€™t be easy. ย With time running out, Chase must find a way to keep Harper safe…and both of them alive.

Texas is a place that captured my soul long ago.ย  If you donโ€™t have time to visit, I hope you look for Harper and Chase in THE CONSPIRACY and that you enjoy.

Till next time, all best and happy reading, Kat

Chaseโ€™s younger brother, Brandon, works with Chase at The Max, while middle brother, Reese, runs Garrett Enterprises, the familyโ€™s billion-dollar business.

In Wait Until Dark, Jonah Wolfe is one of the private investigators who works for Chase.ย  Wolfeโ€™s client, April Vale, is a beautiful redhead accused of murder.ย  Marketing director for the mayor of Dallas, April woke up naked in bed with the mayorโ€™s campaign manager.ย  David Dean was also naked, his body covered in blood from a bullet hole in his chest–a shot fired from Aprilโ€™s gun.

Itโ€™s up to Wolfe–with Aprilโ€™s help–to find the truth of what happened the night of the murder.ย  All the while they struggle with a powerful attraction they canโ€™t afford to feel.ย  Not when Aprilโ€™s life is in danger.ย  Not when Jonah is determined to keep her safe.

Together, the pair work to find the killer–before April winds up as dead as David Dean.

Excerpt:

The sound of voices cut through the pounding in her head, dragging her from a dark void into the light of day.ย  As uniformed policemen streamed into the bedroom, April Vale looked down at her naked body and saw a sea of blood soaking the mattress.ย  A naked man lay beside her, a bullet hole in the center of his chest.

A scream tore free as she recognized David Dean, Mayor Rydellโ€™s campaign manager.ย  Then strong arms hauled her upright and a wave of dizziness hit her, making her stomach roll.ย  One of the officers draped a blanket around her bare shoulders and they hustled her over to a chair by the window.

Fighting a fresh wave of nausea, April gripped the blanket, her body shaking head to foot.ย  โ€œWhat…whatโ€™s happening?โ€ย  She didnโ€™t realize her hands were being cuffed together in front of her until she heard metal clanking and cold bands of steel wrapped around her wrists.

โ€œWhatโ€™s your name?โ€ย  The room swarmed with policemen.ย  The one in front of her was stocky and balding, in his early forties.ย  A pair of EMTs rushed into the room and began working over the bloody man on the bed, but his eyes were open and staring at nothing and she knew he was already dead.

April swallowed the bile in her throat and fought to clear her head, but when she tried to remember where she was or how she got there, all she came up with was a blank.

โ€œI donโ€™t understand whatโ€™s happening,โ€ she said, trying to keep the blanket around her.

โ€œThis will all go smoother if you cooperate,โ€ the stocky policeman said.ย  โ€œTell us your name.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m…Iโ€™m April.ย  April Vale.โ€ย  She glanced over at David.ย  The hole in his chest seemed even bigger and bloodier than before.

โ€œCan you tell us the name of the victim?โ€

Victim.ย  A thick lump rose in her throat, threatening to choke her.ย  โ€œThat…thatโ€™s David Dean.ย  We work for Mayor Rydell.โ€

A young officer with black hair slicked straight back from his forehead walked up.ย  โ€œLooks like weโ€™ve got the murder weapon, Sarge.ย  It was right there on the floor next to the ladyโ€™s purse.โ€

April frowned, her mind foggy again.ย  โ€œWait…wait a minute.ย  Whatโ€™s going on?ย  I donโ€™t understand.โ€ย  Her fingers tightened on the blanket, trying to keep it in place over her naked body.ย  โ€œI donโ€™t know how I got here.ย  I donโ€™t remember what happened.โ€

A gray haired man in a navy blue suit brought the gun over in a plastic bag.ย  She recognized the little .380 she carried for protection.

Iโ€™m Detective Sullivan.ย  Does this belong to you, Ms. Vale?โ€

She took a deep breath.ย  โ€œI think itโ€™s mine.ย  I have one like that.ย  I have a legal permit to carry.โ€

The EMTs began checking her over, her blood pressure, her vision, whether or not she had a concussion.

โ€œWe need to get her to the hospital,โ€ one of them said, โ€œhave her checked out, get a blood sample.โ€

โ€œHospital?ย  I donโ€™t want to go to the hospital.โ€

A female police officer walked up just then.ย  โ€œWeโ€™ve cuffed your hands in front of you so you can hold onto the blanket.ย  If you cooperate, weโ€™ll leave them that way.ย  If not, weโ€™ll have to cuff them behind your back.โ€

She closed her eyes.ย  This couldnโ€™t be happening.ย  โ€œYou think I shot him?ย  I donโ€™t even know how I got here.โ€

The womanโ€™s expression never changed.ย  โ€œYou need to go to the hospital.ย  We need to make sure youโ€™re okay.ย  If you were drugged, itโ€™ll show up in your tox screen.โ€

Tox screen.ย  Drugs.ย  Her pistol and a dead man.

Thatโ€™s when it began to sink in how much trouble she was in.ย  Thatโ€™s when Aprilโ€™s brain finally started working and she began to figure out what she needed to do–before things got a whole lot worse.

At the sound of the glass front door swinging open, Jonah Wolfe looked up to see a tall, leggy redhead walk into the office.

โ€œI hope sheโ€™s looking for me.โ€ย  Jason Maddox, one of the countryโ€™s top bail enforcement agents and one of Jonahโ€™s best friends, had an eye for beautiful women.ย  This one definitely met Jaseโ€™s exacting standards.

But being a former undercover police officer, Jonah noticed more than her stunning face and figure.ย  Her hands were shaking as she approached the receptionist desk and her face was pale.ย  He wondered what kind of trouble the lady was in.

โ€œMay I help you?โ€ย  The receptionist, Mindy Stewart, shoved up the tortoiseshell glasses perched on the end of her nose.ย  She was petite and cute, and smart enough not to date any of the confirmed bachelors who worked at Maximum Security.

โ€œMy name is April Vale.ย  Iโ€™m looking for Jonah Wolfe.โ€

When Maddox groaned his disappointment, Jonahโ€™s focus sharpened on the redhead.ย  He rose from behind his desk and started toward the front of the office.ย  A waiting area with a dark red tufted leather sofa and matching chairs, oak coffee and end tables, gave the place a western feel that perfectly suited the misfit Texans who worked there.

โ€œIโ€™m Wolfe,โ€ Jonah said when he reached her.ย  โ€œWhat can I do for you?โ€ย  His gaze ran over her, taking in her spectacular curves.ย  He couldnโ€™t help hoping she needed him for something a lot more intriguing than his skills as a private detective.

He might have smiled, would have if a TROUBLE sign wasnโ€™t stamped in the middle of the pretty ladyโ€™s forehead.

โ€œMy name is April Vale.ย  Thank you for seeing me.

โ€œNo need to thank me, Ms. Vale.ย  I havenโ€™t done anything yet.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m hoping you will.โ€ย  She had the face of an angel and legs that went on forever.ย  But she was a redhead and all that fiery hair just ramped up the warning signs flashing in her big blue eyes.

โ€œIs there somewhere we can speak in private?โ€ April asked.

โ€œConference room.ย  Follow me.โ€ย  As he led her down the hall, she caught an appreciative glance from Jax Ryker and Dante Romero, the only other guys currently in the office, but she didnโ€™t seem to notice.

โ€œThis way.โ€ย  Jonah held open the door to a glass-walled chamber with a long oak table seating twenty.ย  April walked in and he waited for her to take a seat.

She smoothed the navy blue pencil skirt she was wearing with a pair of sky high heels.ย  She looked good.ย  Classy but not completely untouchable.ย ย  โ€œAs I said, I appreciate your seeing me on such short notice.โ€

โ€œNot a problem.โ€ย  Jonah leaned back in his chair.ย  โ€œAll right, April, why donโ€™t you tell me why youโ€™re here?โ€

She took a deep breath, drawing his attention to the full breasts heโ€™d been doing his best to ignore.ย  Since he never mixed business with pleasure, he shoved the buzz of attraction he was feeling to the back of his brain.

โ€œI work for Mayor Rydell,โ€ April said.ย  โ€œCurrently Iโ€™m….ย  I was just released from police custody a short time ago, Mr. Wolfe.ย  Thatโ€™s…thatโ€™s why Iโ€™m here.โ€

Jonah straightened in his chair.ย  โ€œYou were under arrest?โ€

โ€œOfficially, I havenโ€™t been charged yet.ย  But the charge could be murder.โ€

Jesus.ย  He hadnโ€™t seen that one coming.ย  Now she really had his attention.ย  Jonah leaned toward her.ย  โ€œSo who did you kill, Ms. Vale?โ€
