Summersville Secrets, Book 3

by N. J. Walters

Fans of steamy small-town romance will love the third book in the sexy Summersville Secrets series by New York Times and USA Today bestselling author N. J. Walters!

Ready to explore her fantasies . . .

When Lily Summers was left to raise her son alone, she threw herself into her work as a florist and secretly began writing erotic romance novels. Relying solely on fantasies about the impossibly sexy Carson Granger for material, the single mom has a long list of sexual scenarios she needs to research to make her stories catch fire. When Carson discovers the list and offers some hands-on help, Lily’s immediately aroused by his primal power and the elemental attraction that ignites between them, but she’s terrified of surrendering control to a man she’s wanted for so long, especially one who’s younger than she is.

Desperate to show her so much more . . .

Carson always knew that Lily had shut herself off from men after a bad marriage, but he also knew the quietly sensuous florist had a secret side, and he wanted to be the man to tap into that reserve of passion. When he discovers her hidden wish list, he knows it’s his chance to initiate her into a world of sexual abandon before revealing a secret of his own. As they indulge in each new item on Lily’s list, she can’t deny the burning desire and need beating inside her, and with tender patience and sexual finesse, Carson is breaking down her barriers and drawing one step closer to turning her short-term explorations into a lifetime of devoted pleasure.

This is a fully revised edition of a book originally published as Lily Blossoms.

I love the care that Carson puts into wooing Lily.Β  He’s waited a long time, and she’s skittish, so he takes advantage of an opportunity when it falls into his lap πŸ™‚ Β He displays a lot of understanding in how he handles her – taking it slow and easing her into each step.Β  Of course he makes a couple of miscalculations but I like that Walters doesn’t make it into too much of an issues.Β  The drama when it happens is low-key and handled in a realistic manner.

Of course, he’s not the only one that has uh-ohs.Β  Lily follows Carson’s lead but that doesn’t mean that she doesn’t let her fears get the better of her a time or two, hurting Carson in the process.Β  But she comes through when it is important and takes care of business.

My only complaint is that I’m selfish and I want to know what is in store for these two down the road.Β  Lily’s concerns for getting involved with Carson are valid – while 7 years isn’t a big gap at their ages, they are in different stages of their lives and that could cause complications.Β  I would have liked a little more time to work thru those things, but being a romance we can just assume that they work it out and live HEA πŸ™‚

Steamy, introspective and heartfelt, Lily’s List has something for just about everyone.

(Part of a series, but can stand on its own with a few minor references to other stories.)

Cottonbloom Novels #2

by Laura Trentham

Can two hearts come together in one divided town?

As a boy, Nash Hawthorne spent countless afternoons on the Louisiana side of Cottonbloom with Tally Fournette, wading in the river, peeling oranges and catching frogs. When illness stole his mother, Nash yearned to take Tally and run awayβ€”for good. Instead, he crossed the state line to live with his aunt. It was a short distance as the crow flies, but it swept him into a whole new world…

After Nash left, Tally managed to struggle through her own losses without him. But now that she’s crossed paths with him againβ€”at Cottonbloom College, where the grown-up, gorgeous Nash teaches historyβ€”she is reminded of their cherished youthful connection…and an attraction that has only gotten stronger with age. Between Tally’s possessive ex and Nash’s snobbish aunt, no one thinks they belong together. In a town torn apart by old resentments and rivalries, can they find their way back to the life they once sharedβ€”and turn their long-lost dreams into a real and lasting love?

Do you need to have readΒ Kiss Me That WayΒ to enjoyΒ this story? Β No. Β But it does help because this is one of those series that are intertwined and each is benefited by the others.

We caught glimpses of Nash and got to know Tally a little bit in the first book so we knew where this one was going to go. Β But their histories have so much depth – the way that they had an amazing connection and then lost so much at the same time, being separated and having to go through difficult adolescences alone. Β It’s similar to Cade and Monroe, the way that they meant so much to each other as kids but life took them away, only to bring them back together at the right time. Β But Trentham makes sure that Tally & NashΒ have their own individual issues to work through.

Tally has felt stupid for years because she struggled in school. Β Unfortunately the death of her parents just compounded what was already turning into a problem for her. Β With her flighty uncle Del as her guardian and being raised by her teenage brother as best he could there wasn’t enough attention to get her the help she really needed. Β It’s led to a lot of years where she’s felt like a lesser person, even after starting a very successful gym. Β Subsequently her choices on a personal level haven’t been exactly the best. Β Seeing her childhood best friend again, looking hot and being all smartΒ & charming, definitely doesn’t help her insecurities.

Nash had his own image issues. Β Being Nerdy Nash and super smart, he was an outcast at school – picked on or ignored. Β Just because he got hot along the way doesn’t mean he’s all that more sure of himself than she is. Β He seems to have a better handle on it than Tally does, thanks to finding a home for himself in academia, but he’s got some scars from his teen years that still impact things today … isn’t that always how it is?

I absolutely LOVE how easy it is for these two to reconnect. Β They complement each other so well and to have that still there even after all these years leads to the foundation that they need to build something more. Β As long as they can get over the fear of what it could mean for their hearts.

Then He Kissed MeΒ is an absolutely freakin’ fantastic story of second-chance love. Β Together Tally and Nash are cute and fun, bringing out the best in each other and challenging each other to do something more, to finally layΒ those last few issues to rest and move into a lasting, grown-up love.

Once again Trentham delivers good-ol’ down-home Southern living with quirky but lovable characters and a love story that will having you sighing with pleasure. Β And she gives a little more about Sawyer and Regan – enough that I can’t wait to get my hands on their book next month!

It’s beginning to look a lot like love . . .

As her thirtieth birthday approaches, deputy Jill Flaherty decides it’s time to live a little. When she walks into Sawyer Anderson’s bar in her sexiest dress, she’s not thinking that he’s her brother’s best friend or about the many women he dated during his years as a pro hockey player. All she’s thinking is that it’s finally time to confess to her longtime crush how she truly feels.

Sawyer is done being a player on and off the ice. Yet no one in the small town of Christmas seems to believe he’s ready to settle down, not Jill, and certainly not Jack, who is determined to keep Sawyer from breaking his little sister’s heart. But as Sawyer and Jill’s relationship heats up, can he prove that he’s her happy ever after?

Excerpt:

Deputy Jill Flaherty sat at her desk wrapping her brother’s birthday present for his surprise party tonight. The yellow helium balloons she’d ordered were currently bouncing in front of her face. She lifted her hand to bat them way, ripping the paper off the present in the process. A present that she’d been painstakingly wrapping for the last ten minutes. Frustrated, she swore under her breath while shaking her fingers to free them of the tape and brightly-colored tissue paper.

“You’re stuck,” Suze announced in an authoritative voice from behind her computer.

“Thank you for your insightful observation,” Jill grumbled at the forty-something woman sitting at the dispatcher’s desk across the room as she bent her head to pull the tape off her fingers with her teeth.

Suze leaned around her computer and grinned. “I didn’t mean literally. I mean you’re stuck, stuck. That’s why you’ve been so bitchy lately. You have the pre-30 birthday blues.”

“It’s my fingers that are stuck, not me. And I’m not. . . ” Jill sighed. “Okay, so maybe I have been a little bitchy. But it’s because of all the overtime I’ve been putting in the past couple of weeks. I’m tired.”

She ignored the reference to her thirtieth birthday. She wouldn’t admit to Suze that she was partially right. Like an ominous black cloud, the big 3-0 loomed large in Jill’s mind. It always had. Her mother died two days before her thirtieth. Preparations for Jack’s thirty-seventh birthday had served to remind Jill that her thirtieth was only five months away.

“Because you don’t have a life.”

Jill lifted a hand still covered in tape and paper in an are-you-kidding-me gesture. “I do so. I have–”

“Yeah, yeah, I know. You have friends and family and a job you love. Still doesn’t mean you have a life. You put yours on hold when Jack was MIA. I had a front row seat so I know what I’m talking about.”

“I have a life,” Jill reiterated without elaborating. Suze had stolen her ammunition. If having friends, family, and a job she loved didn’t count, Jill didn’t know what else to say.

A chair scraped noisily on the tile floor and Suze took a seat across from her. “Okay, so tell me, when was the last time you hid the salami?” she asked.

Jill frowned. “What . . .”

Suze rolled her brown eyes as she peeled the last of the tape and tissue paper from Jill’s fingers. “Bumped uglies. . . Did the horizontal mumbo?”

“I have no idea what you’re–”

“Oh for godsakes, when was the last time you got laid?”

Since the answer didn’t immediately pop into her head, Jill hedged, “What does that have to do with anything?”

“And there’s your problem. You can’t remember, can you?” Suze said as she rolled the paper and tape into a ball.

“Yes, I can. Seven months ago,” she said, taking a guess. Then realizing the number of months might unwittingly validate Suze’s no-life pronouncement, Jill added, “Before you say anything, I’ve been busy.”

Suze pursed her lips and tossed the ball into the garbage can. “Don’t buy two-sided tape again. And it was eight months ago with that accountant from Logan County.”

“Really? Huh. I could have sworn . . . ” She took in the I-told-you-so look on Suze’s lightly freckled face. “Oh, come on, that doesn’t mean anything.”

“Yeah, it does. It says it all. You have unmemorable sex with unmemorable men. And do you know why you do?”

“No, but I’m sure you’re going to enlighten me,” Jill said, carefully working the rest of the paper off Jack’s present with a pair of scissors.

“Fear,” Suze said, taking the scissors from Jill’s hand and looking her in the eyes. “You’re afraid to get your heart broken. That’s why you spend your time fantasizing about the man and life you want and not doing anything about it.”

“I do not fantasize about Sawyer,” Jill blurted without thinking. She caught the triumphant look in Suze’s eyes and quickly added, “Or any other man in town.”

*****

Review:

Jill isn’t the most girly of girls but just because she can kick butt while in uniform doesn’t mean that she doesn’t want the same happy ending that everyone else does.Β  Unfortunately her dream guy is also her brother’s best friend and someone who doesn’t see her as girlfriend material.Β  Growing up together definitely makes it hard for him to see her as anything else and you can’t help but feel bad for everything that she goes through.Β  She’s never felt quite good enough and to have someone she’s loved forever not want her back is definitely a heart breaker.Β  There’s a lot of back and forth between these two, but once she sets her mind to turning his head things definitely get crazy fast and Mason makes sure that it is a heck of a ride.

I love the fact that while Sawyer gets a lot of things right – kind, caring and helpful – when he screws up he does it big time πŸ™‚ Β I can definitely get why somehow these two never quite make it onto the same page – they get close but somehow just keep missing it.Β  It makes for heart-squeezing moments, but also fun times, as the two of them try to figure out where they stand with one another.

(When I read Kiss Me in Christmas, the book before this one in this series, I felt like you needed to have at least read the story before that one to truly be able to keep up and enjoy.Β  But here, I don’t think it is a problem.Β  Previous couples do make an appearance and you’d be more likely to pick up on all the nuances if you’d read their story too, but not to the degree as before.Β  I think this time, Happy Ever After in Christmas can easily stand on its own.Β  Although if you read, Christmas in JulyΒ – which I did and loved, although I don’t know how I keep missing other books in the series – then you’d get a smidge better understanding of the interplay with Sawyer, Jill, Jack and Grace although I think that Mason does a great job of giving you the important parts.Β  It’s been a long time since I read it and I kept up just fine πŸ™‚ )

Allison B. Hanson, Blue Ridge series, Book Review, Never Let Go

cover85219-mediumNever Let Go

A Blue Ridge Romance

by Allison B. Hanson

Just one gorgeous weekend away from reality. Then they can go on like it never happened…

Riley Fisher doesn’t have time to chase after men. As a single mother working two jobs, she barely has time to eat or sleep. But a girl has needs. So when handsome veteran Sam Brooks asks her out, she decides she deserves some R&R. She doesn’t expect anything else from himβ€”after all, he’s hardly the type to get serious.

Sam came back from Afghanistan lucky to be alive, despite PTSD that hits whenever he lets down his guard. His therapist told him to forget about relationships. When he meets Riley, he’s not planning on breaking the rules. She’s cute, petite, and a total smartassβ€”not even his type. But she’s hard to forget. Especially once he runs into Riley and her toddler on a rustic mountain getaway and sees what he’s missing. Her kid makes him laugh all day. And Riley makes him burn all night.

Too bad a relationship is impossible. But they can enjoy the attraction. It’s not like they’re going to fall in love…

Such an amazingly sweet story!Β  Riley and Sam slowly build a relationship – it’s not something they are expecting but they have a connection and it’s hard to resist the pull.Β  Both of them have some issues to overcome but they complement each other well.Β  I think my favorite part is that Hanson has Sam get professional help to overcome his PTSD, instead of having it fix itself or having love conquer all.Β  It’s not something that he can do by himself and having the chance at a real family with Riley is the motivation he finally needs to see someone about it.

Riley has some concerns about getting involved with Sam.Β  She hasn’t had the best of luck with men, but lucky for her this time she caught a good one.Β  He’s caring and willing to do just about anything to take care of her and her son.Β  Having a strong man in her life, willing to support her and help her, isn’t something she’s used to but definitely something she needs and it is great seeing her have something so good happen.

I really liked watching these two fall in love and figure out a way around their hardships.Β  It isn’t an easy road for them but one they need to go down to build a strong future together.

After We Fall, Book Review, Marquita Valentine, Take the Fall series

cover83255-mediumAfter We Fall

A Take the Fall Novel

by Marquita Valentine

After winning raves for Take the Fall (β€œcrackling with tension, intrigue, and romance”—Katy Evans) and When We Fall (β€œsexy, emotional, heartfelt”—Monica Murphy), Marquita Valentine ratchets up the tension as new beginnings lead to undeniable passion.

A tough cop with an even tougher past, Hunter Sloan has never let anyone stop him from getting what he wantsβ€”and he wants Evangeline Ambrose bad. With her gentle curves and raw vulnerability, Hunter’s beautiful, mysterious new neighbor awakens his protective side. Determined to do right by a woman who’s gone through hell and back, Hunter could be the one to take away the painβ€”so long as his own secrets don’t sink their relationship before it begins.

Having escaped an abusive marriage, Evangeline simply wants to start over in the small, quiet town of Forrestville. She’s also avoiding all contact with the opposite sex, because she just can’t trust her instincts when it comes to menβ€”not even with the sinfully sexy cop next door. So why can’t she stop thinking about him? Hunter has darkness in his soul, and yet no one ever made her feel so safe. For all her best laid plans, Evangeline didn’t count on choices this hardβ€”or temptation this hot.

After reading When We FallΒ I was just waiting for this story … and was so thrilled with what I got!

If you are looking for the perfect book boyfriend, look no further than Hunter Sloan.Β  Thanks to his past he’s caring and understanding but also strong.Β  He shows an amazing amount of sensitivity to Evangeline and what she’s been through – going slow and wooing her, letting her set the pace but making sure that she knows that he’s there waiting for her.Β  He’s protective, funny and sexy as all get out.

Evangeline has had a rough few years, thanks to an abusive relationship.Β  And she still finds it hard to let that go and trust others, even therapists.Β  She needs to address it, not ignore it, and Hunter does everything he can to help make that happen.Β  She still has to be the one to heal herself but he’s there to support her every step of the way.

If you’ve read the other books in this series (and apparently there is another series that involves Evangeline’s siblings, but I haven’t read it) then you know what you are going to get.Β  It’s sexy and gritty and so addictive to read.Β  I’ve already seen what’s coming in the next book and I CANNOT wait to get my hands on a copy – get those two together and let’s watch the sparks fly πŸ™‚

Never say never…

Romance isn’t an option for Holly Greenwood. With her wedding planner career on the line she needs to stay focused, and that means pleasing her demanding boss, not getting distracted by her mind-alteringly hot neighbor…

Ex-Marine Kevin Vandemeer craves normalcy. Instead, he has a broken-down old house in need of a match and some gasoline, a meddling family, and the uncanny ability to attract the world’s craziest women. At least that last one he can fix: he and his buddies have made a pact to swear off women, and this includes his sweetly sexy new neighbor.

Excerpt:

Kevin wasn’t sure why he was surprised Holly was here. She was a wedding planner, and from what he’d seen so far, she was a damn good one.

He’d been on his way out of the room, needing a breather from the noise and the chaos of the reception when he’d seen her at the table. He hadn’t planned on asking her to danceβ€”hell, he hated to danceβ€”but he’d been desperate for a reason to talk to her.

When he sat back down at the table, Tyler wore a smirk. β€œCrashed and burned, huh? I thought you were going to the bathroom to take a piss.”

β€œI was. I just happened to run into a friend.”

β€œRun into a friend, my ass. I thought we’d sworn off women. I’ve held up my end of the bachelor brotherhood. And let me add that I had no idea my balls could turn this blue.”

β€œShe’s a friend,” Kevin said, trying not to sound irritated and feed any more fuel to the fire.

β€œShe’s his neighbor,” Matt said, taking a sip of his beer, and giving Kevin a pointed look. β€œThey’re friends.”

Tyler burst out laughing. β€œYou got friend-zoned?”

β€œNo,” Kevin said slowly, picking up his drink, surprised Matt hadn’t told Tyler about the situation he’d stumbled upon. β€œI was the one who said I wanted to be friends.”

β€œWhy?” Tyler asked, watching Holly with a little more interest than Kevin liked. β€œShe’s hot. Do you know if she’s seeing anyone?”

β€œNo.” Kevin’s irritation grew.

Tyler stood and adjusted his tie, a smirk lighting up his eyes. β€œScrew the brotherhood. I think I’ll go over and introduce myself.”

Kevin was up in a flash. β€œI don’t think so.”

β€œWhy not?” he looked surprised. β€œShe looks like she’d be worth a short break from my hiatus from women.”

Kevin stepped in front of his path, his jaw set. β€œBecause you’re a prick who will use her and toss her aside and she deserves a helluva lot better than that.”

Matt was up in an instant, grabbing Kevin’s arm. β€œWhy don’t we get some air?”

β€œYou like her,” Tyler said, slack jawed.

β€œOf course he likes her,” Matt said. β€œFor someone so smart, sometimes you’re an idiot.”

β€œIn my defense,” Tyler said. β€œHe said they were friends.”

β€œOkay,” Matt said slowly. β€œWhen was the last time you convinced a woman to be just a friend?”

β€œNever.”

β€œI rest my case, counselor.”

Tyler sat back down, and Matt tugged on Kevin’s sleeve to get him to join them.

Β β€œI can’t believe you didn’t last even a single week,” Tyler said.

β€œHe didn’t last a single day,” Matt told him. β€œHe slept with her the night after our agreement to remain single.”

Tyler burst out laughing. β€œFor a tough-ass former Marine, I expected you to be the last holdout, man. At least a week or two.”

ONLY-YOU-quote-graphic-2b

Review:

**Minor spoilers, maybe, kinda, so just a warning**

FYI, I didn’t read the Wedding Pact series (for those that know me, *shocker!*), and while there are references to it – especially with Kevin’s sister – it didn’t impact this story much.Β  I think it can easily stand on its own.

I’m going to start by saying that the ending seems a little rushed to me, not the relationship so much as just the timing.Β  I think the whole story covers about 3 weeks, and while it reads like a movie rom-com (funny, wacky and sweet), what works for me on the screen needs a little more time on the page for some reason here πŸ™‚ Β I want to emphasize it is definitely a very minor complaint, because if you take the timing out of it, I am highly satisfied with how things go for these two.

As I say that, I have to admit that I do kinda wish I’d read at least Megan’s story so I have a better feel for Kevin because I think that he was probably a handful in the previous book.Β  The stories about the crazies that he attracts, and thus the very funny misunderstanding with Holly, are a hoot. Β And he’s got such a wonderful relationship with his sister, supportive but still snarky, that I would love to see that from her side.

Once their misunderstandingsΒ get straightened out, the interactions between Kevin & HollyΒ are sweet, spicy and humorous.Β  The main drama then comes fromΒ his mother and the fact that Holly works for her.Β  It’s not the best of situations for either but they eventually make it work. Β (There’s those rom-com moments again πŸ™‚ )

I’m looking forward to Kevin’s friends getting their own romances because I definitely believe those two need to be shaken up!

Her hobbies include witty (in her own mind) Facebook comments and dancing in her kitchen with her children. (Quite badly if you believe her offspring.) Hidden talents include the gift of justification and the ability to drink massive amounts of caffeine and still fall asleep within two minutes. Her lack of the sense of smell allows her to perform many unspeakable tasks. She has six children and hasn’t lost her sanity. Or so she leads you to believe.

Book Review, Shiloh Walker, The Trouble with Temptation

cover83327-mediumThe Trouble with Temptation

by Shiloh Walker

Love is the greatest risk of all.

After seven days in a coma, Hannah Parker remembers nothing about the accident that landed her in the hospitalβ€”or how she ended up pregnant with Brannon’s baby, the man she’s loved since high school. Her body and heart have burned for him for years, and when she wakes up, he’s sleeping by her bedside, anxious to keep her safe at all costs. But as Hannah struggles with her amnesia, a threat looms closerβ€”one that could have deadly consequences if she recovers her memories. She will have to trust Brannon completely if she is to keep what haunts her at bay…and their baby safe….

Brannon McKay spent the last ten years fantasizing about Hannah. In his mind, he’s explored every passionate scenario he can think of while, in real life, Brannon took their budding relationship and threw it away with both hands. Hannah doesn’t remember what happened but now that she is awake, Brannon would rather die than watch her walk away again. When Hannah and his unborn child’s lives are threatened, Brannon must stake claim to the woman who has held his heart captive for years…or risk disaster tearing them apart…

This is one of those times when not reading the first book in a series might have been a detriment.Β  Walker does a good job of filling readers in on the pertinent details of what happened but I think that there are some nuances that are missed.Β  Actually, I have no idea how much of an overflow there is between the two, I’m just guessing based on how much of book 2 I think will impact book 3 and how much I felt like I was missing having only read this book.Β  And I’m warning you now that not everything is wrapped up nicely – it is going to be a requirement to read the next book in order to continue some of the plot lines.Β  There’s an unsolved mystery as well as the next romance, which has already been introduced.

The relationship between Hannah and Brannon is addressed completely, though, and very enjoyably.Β  We start the book with Brannon finding out about Hannah’s accident and his realization of how much she means to him.Β  But her amnesia, and the possibility that someone wants her dead, leaves him with a whole mess of complications.Β  And as someone who doesn’t do relationships he’s not really set-up to handle it well πŸ™‚ Β The threat to Hannah takes up a good portion of the story (and, again, it isn’t resolved so be prepared to read more than this book) but Walker doesn’t ignore their romantic troubles.Β  All of it is blended together very well and none of it feels short-changed.

The mystery is vague, with Walker giving you just enough to have you guessing. And since it is unsolved you do feel a little lost at the end as you wait for the next story.Β  But because we get Gideon & Moira’s voices here with a look into their history, that’s going to bring you back for The Right Kind of Trouble as much as finding out who the bad guy is.Β  Wow, those two have a lot of hurts to handle πŸ™‚

*****

Excerpt:

Megan Campbell stepped away from the cash register of Notes & Roses and leaned against the back counter. She put her right hand in her jeans pocket and, as carefully and unobtrusively as possible, removed her cell phone and scrolled to Justin’s name. What should she text her brother? Help sounded like a good start. Or possibly, there’s a man in my shop and I think he’s drunk or stoned.

Yep, text something like that to Justin, and he would come in guns blazing. Then he’d pin the weird guy to the floor and read him his rights. And the man currently staring at a wall didn’t look dangerous, just lost. Homeless, maybe?

Something more specific then, like, there is a vagrant in here, and he needs help, what should I do? The man moved a little. Away from her side of the store, the β€œroses” part of the setup, and over to the β€œnotes” side. He was peering at the shelves, a collection of stationery and household bits and pieces like cushions and local crafts. He stumbled a little, turned to the side, and looked up at the posters displayed on the far wall. Landscapes of Vermont: rivers, small towns and red high-sided barns with gently rolling hills of emerald green.

β€œThat’s wrong,” he said.

β€œSorry?” Megan askedβ€”but he didn’t reply.

He’s talking to the wall now. Should she add that to the text as well? This was going to end up being a hell of a lot of typing to explain what he was doing. Despite how odd it all looked, the visitor wasn’t threatening her. Also, Rachel would be back soon. Maybe between them they could sort this out?

He hadn’t even spoken to her, but something wasn’t right. Maybe it was the way he’d been standing, his hands fisted at his sides, staring now at the new Valentine’s wall display of flowers and hearts. Maybe it was the way he was dressed; dark jeans caked in mud, heavy boots that had tracked in the same mud. Not to mention the black hoodie with the hood partially hiding his face from her view.

Or maybe it was the despair in his hunched shoulders, the utter defeat in the way he had to support himself to stand.

Whatever it was, Megan was faced with two options. Talk to the strange man in her shop while she was alone in here, or call in reinforcements in case things went south.

Her visitor moved, not his feet but his fists, unclenching and bringing his hands up to knuckle his eyes and then cover them. Megan’s cop brother liked to explain these things to her, but she didn’t need his help to recognize when despair in someone turned to anger.

She sent the standard 911 text, startled when she looked up and saw the stranger had stepped closer to her while she’d been distracted.

β€œWhere am I?” he asked, his voice very soft.

β€œYou’re in my shop.”

He shook his head. β€œI need the music. Someone took it, and I need it.”

Okay, this was so not going the way she wanted it to go. He was incoherent. Maybe he was homeless and needed a place to get out of the persistent snow that had plagued Stanford Creek the last few days. He’d evidently been somewhere slushy and muddy, if his clothes were anything to go by.

β€œI don’t understand, sir; what music do you need?” she asked, and waited for him to acknowledge her question. Instead, he took another, shaky, step forward, and covered his eyes again. β€œHello? Can I help you?” she repeated when he didn’t look at her.

That finally got his attention. His hands came down, and she got her first clear look at his eyes and face. What she saw had her reaching to send another text. He had blood on him, smeared down from his temple into his wild beard, and his blue eyes were bright with something. Drugs maybe? Long, dark hair hid some of his features, and he looked like he was about to keel over.

β€œWhere’s the music?” he mumbled, his voice low and urgent. He gripped his temples hard and stumbled back, knocking a display of greeting cards to the floor. The sound was a loud clatter in the otherwise quiet room. β€œShit… I didn’t…”

β€œSir?” This time she was within reaching distance as he rounded on her, his lips pulled back in a snarlβ€”or a grimace of pain, she couldn’t be entirely sure. Whatever, it wasn’t the look of someone who wanted to be spoken to. Time to leave. She glanced at the front door, imagining the steps between here and there and whether or not he would lurch her way. When she focused back on him, all she saw was a situation that could get out of hand. He was a good six inches taller than her five-nine, broad and built, with tattoos curling around his wrist, disappearing up under the sleeve of the hoodie.

Everything about him looked wrong. He didn’t move again, or even acknowledge her; all he did was stare with bright sapphire eyes, focused on a point behind her, scary and intense and so damned fixated with his expression in that scowl.

β€œWhat happened?” He groaned and covered his eyes again. β€œCall… Zee…”

She texted without looking, only glancing at the screen briefly to make sure she was sending another text to her brother and not some random person on her list. 911. Again. The standard sibling instruction for help me right the hell now, reserved for having one of her brothers rescue her from one of her many dreadful first dates. Garrett wasn’t even in town, so there was little point texting him, and Justin may not even be in the sheriff’s office. She hoped to hell he was, though, and had read her message. She’d know soon enough because the small sheriff’s office was close.

And still the stranger stood there, staring at her. At least he hadn’t moved any closer.

He closed his eyes and wiped the blood that was trickling down his face, looking down at his hand and staring at the red that streaked his skin. Megan thought she heard a sob, but couldn’t be sure. Compassion welled inside her. Vagrant or not, dressed in soiled clothes and with the hood up, he didn’t have to be a criminal.

β€œSir? Do you need help?” She held out her hand, but he stepped closer to her and damn it, she may have had self-defense training but she wasn’t stupid. If the man was hopped up on drugs, she had to stay out of reach. The door opened and Justin stepped in, all uniform and pissed-off attitude.

β€œTwo 911s? This had better be good, Megs.”

Megan inclined her head to the man Justin evidently hadn’t seen in his dramatic entrance. Justin could handle himself, and he had a gun; he’d know what to do.

β€œWhat the hell?” Justin said as he assessed the situation, his hand automatically resting on his holstered weapon.

β€œI think it’s drugs,” she said loud enough for Justin to hear. The man looked at Justin and then to her, before shaking his head a little.

β€œNo.” The voice was raspy, little more than a growl. β€œNot those.” He appeared to be struggling to talk, and he pressed his hands to each side of his head. β€œJust the music; Zee will know,” he added, but his voice slurred, and he coughed and doubled over.

Justin pulled his weapon and held it to one side, his other hand held in front of him as he stepped closer. β€œSir? Are you hurt?”

Megan saw her brother’s hand on the sidearm, the other placating and suggesting and warning at the same time. She’d seen him stand like this when he broke up the fight at the drugstore. Not that he’d drawn his weapon then; he’d dealt with it by intimidation alone, because everyone involved lived in the town and no one messed with the sheriff. Megan looked at her brother, who teased her, who’d hidden her dolls and pulled her pigtails as a kid, but who was now in a situation that was serious. He was all business.

β€œWhat’s your name, sir?” Justin asked.

The stranger stepped back from him, straight into a pile of notebooks this time. The shelf shuddered and some of the display tilted. The movement translated into Justin grabbing the man’s hoodie to stop him falling as he flailed and attempted to stay upright.

He took a swing at Justin, who ducked and swerved. The attempted hit missed Justin by a mile, and the man followed the momentum he had begun, smacked his fist against a shelf edge, and collapsed in a heap on the floor. Then he didn’t move, was absolutely still. Justin holstered his weapon and crouched next to the prone form of the hooded man, checking for a pulse and then talking into his radio.

β€œDispatch, 390D, medical assistance required at Notes & Roses.”

Review:

I was so surprised when I realized that I’d already gotten to the end of this book.Β  The story held me captive and I just kept turning pages as quickly as I could!

For all of the secrets and problems that these two have, the story is pretty simple.Β  They meet, have a connection and start dating.Β  There isn’t a lot of emotional drama or setbacks for them.Β  Megan handles it well when she finds out Cody’s secrets.Β  He’s had a rough couple of years and is understandably wary (and weary), but he’s not a bad man and Megan knows that.

I love the simplicity of it … and then Scott throws us a few curves to keep things hopping.Β  It’s not horribly drawn out, and I like that as well.Β  It’s wrapped up smoothly and I am super excited to see what else is coming in this series.Β  Between Cody’s bandmates and Megan’s family there are bound to be some great stories coming … hopefully soon πŸ™‚

by Jo Ann Brown

A Convenient Wedding

With a baby on the way, a toddler son to care for and a run-down farm, Amish widow Rebekah Burkholder is worried for her family’s future. So when a kind, hardworking Amish widower with three children proposes marriage for sensible reasons, Rebekah accepts. She’ll oversee Joshua Stoltzfus’s household, be a loving mother to his children and try to reach his rebellious teenager. Joshua will make a wonderful father to her young son and the little one soon to be born. But as Rebekah unexpectedly falls for her new husband, dare she hope that Joshua will reopen his heart to love, too?

I love these Amish romances from Harlequin.Β  There is just something heartwarming and reaffirming about the goodness in the world – the simple life and dedication to family, community and God.

Rebekah’s first marriage proves though that even in an Amish life there are still problems.Β  She’s hesitant to trust a man again but realizes that marriage to Joshua is the best thing for her kids.Β  And spending time with a man that has such a good heart goes a long way to reminding her that there are worthy men in the world.

Joshua doesn’t understand why Rebekah is so skittish but he realizes that having a strong, caring woman in the house full time is doing wonderful things for his family.Β  But he finds it very hard to reconcile moving on from his first wife who he loved very much.

Their private battles could be true for anyone – Amish or not.Β  And the glimpse into their community and beliefs just adds extra heart to an already touching story of two people deciding if they can let go of the past and move forward together.

Book Review, It Had to Be Fate, Tamra Baumann

cover83145-mediumIt Had to Be Fate

by Tamra Baumann

Falling for a bad-boy rock star is the last thing single mother Casey Anderson-Bovier should do. Embroiled in a custody battle with her ex, Casey is fighting to raise her boys in their quaint Colorado hometownβ€”a secret haven for celebrities. But when it comes to her hotel’s newest guest, Casey can’t connect the dots. Is Zane Steele the out-of-control rocker plastered all over the media, or the captivating man with a killer smile who’s charming her and her two boys?

Zane has a good reason for letting the world believe the worst of himβ€”and that’s a secret he’s sure he can never share…until he meets Casey. After years of having fans fall at his feet, he’s found the one woman who brings him to his knees. Casey is beautiful and intriguingβ€”and thoroughly justified in not trusting him one bit, especially with her family at stake. But the only way to be together is to convince her to take a chance on him, on fate, and on their crazy, unexpected love.

Casey fights her attraction to Zane but I really liked that she didn’t cling too hard to what’s in the media, instead believing what she sees for herself.Β  He’s caring and funny, respects her and takes care of her kids.Β  He shows what a good man he is and that means so much more.

I love this book – it totally wasn’t what I was expecting.Β  Baumann gives readers two characters to root for – both battling personal issues but finding it hard to ignore their hearts as they get to know each other more.Β  The complete normalness of the two falling in love is hard to resist and while their problems might be bigger than the average persons it is related in a believable way.Β  And I love the way everything is resolved in the end – it works so well for the story.Β  I’m definitely looking into what else Baumann has out there.

(This is my first book in this series and it can totally stand on its own.)
