Excerpt:

CHAPTER 1

Now

Youโ€™ve got this, Cat told herself. But note to self: she so did not in fact have this. Her nerves had taken overโ€”her own fault, of course. Sheโ€™d done a thing. A big thing. And though her heart had been in the right place when sheโ€™d done that thing, butterflies were revolting in her gut, telling her sheโ€™d be the only one whoโ€™d see it that way. It was times like this that she missed Michael the most, because he wouldโ€™ve been her ally in this, she was sure. Back then, even at half her height and weight, heโ€™d been her shadow. The cutest shadow on the planet. Over time, sheโ€™d gotten used to being without him, but itโ€™d never gotten easier.

Twin piglet-like snorts distracted her, and she looked down at her fiancรฉโ€™s โ€œbabies.โ€ The pug brothers had huge buggy black eyes and little round bodies and vibrated like they needed their batter- ies changed. Roly was black and Poly tan, both with black faces, black curly tails, and little black feet.

They snorted at her until she gave in and scooped them up, one in each arm, having to smile at their smushed-in faces. โ€œOkay, guys, listen up. Weโ€™ve got a lot to do today.โ€ She took a good, hard look around the old cabin that had been in her familyโ€™s possession since the early 1900s. It sat right on Rainbow Lake, about twenty minutes outside of Wildstone, a small ranching community on Californiaโ€™s central coast. She had a lot of good memories here: visiting her grandparents, learning to swim . . . sheโ€™d even run away here a few times in her dramatic teens.

Her grandparents were gone, and her parents now lived in South Carolina, where both of them were college professors. They were thinking of selling this place, but had agreed to let her live here until her wedding. At least that was the official reason. The unofficial one was that she was losing her collective shit and had needed the safety net.

The problem was that there were still a few vital pieces missing from the puzzle of Caitlinโ€™s life: the most important pieces, the corner pieces, the ones you couldnโ€™t do without. And since Michael was an angel nowโ€”and damn, her heart still squeezed painfully every time she thought about him, which was a lotโ€” she was really counting on the wedding to bring the other vital pieces back to her. Those pieces named Heather, Walker, and Maze.

The estrangement between them all felt like a huge, gaping hole. Itโ€™d started at Michaelโ€™s grave three years ago and had only gotten worse. Hence the thing sheโ€™d done.

No one was going to thank her. And it was entirely possible it would all blow up in her face. But sheโ€™d had to try. Just thinking about it had the butterflies in her belly escaping and taking flight in her nervous system, giving her the shakes. But that might have been the five cups of coffee sheโ€™d consumed. She set down the pugs, much to their snorting, squealing dis– pleasure, and got to it. Running around like a madwoman for the next few hours, she changed the sheets on the beds in the spare bedrooms, swept the wood floors, washed the towels so theyโ€™d smell fresh . . . all while fielding call after call from her boss, Sara.

Cat managed the Wildstone deli that Sara owned. Cat also made all the hot food, which was actually the only part of her job she enjoyed, because the deli itself was a nightmare. Sheโ€™d taken three weeks off for the wedding, but Sara, whoโ€™d missed her calling as the passive-aggressive queen of the universe, had been in contact almost every day in the guise of needing something, while really just wanting Caitlin to know of her every little mistake or misstep.

So when her phone buzzed in her pocket yet again while Cat was folding clothes in the laundry room, she ignored it.

โ€œCaitlin?โ€ came Dillonโ€™s voice. โ€œCan you bring me my laptop?โ€

She transferred another load into the dryer, turned it on, blew a stray hair off her sweaty face, and poked her head out of the laundry room to find Dillon sitting on the couch in the living room, feet up on the coffee table, Roly and Poly curled up on his lap.

โ€œAre you kidding me?โ€

He flashed her the charming smile that had caught both her attention and her heart a year ago. โ€œSorry,โ€ he said. โ€œBut my ankleโ€™s bothering me again. Do you mind?โ€

Hard to, when his twisted ankle was actually her fault. Sheโ€™d seen a Cosmo post online titled โ€œThe Top Ten Ways to Spruce Up Your Sex Life.โ€ Feeling ambitious, sheโ€™d gone with number one: โ€œSeduce Your Man in the Shower.โ€ What could she say? The illustrations had looked intriguing.

Turned out attempting intriguing things in the shower was dangerous.

Feeling guilty, she ran up the stairs and got his laptop, stopping to straighten out the mess heโ€™d left on the desk. When she got back downstairs, he was standing at the front door with his golf bag slung over his shoulder.

โ€œWhat are you doing?โ€ she asked.

โ€œJust got a call from Mom. Her golf date bailed and she needs me to do the back nine with her.โ€

โ€œBut your ankle.โ€

โ€œWeโ€™ve got a cart.โ€ He handed her the pugs.

Juggling the soft sausage loaves while trying to avoid the inevitable face kissesโ€”a big no-thank-you, since they had a fondness for licking each otherโ€™s buttsโ€”she stared at Dillon. โ€œYou said that youโ€™d be here to meet my family and have dinner with us.โ€

โ€œBabe.โ€ His face softened. โ€œIโ€™m your family. Me and my mom, and your parents.โ€

โ€œYou know thatโ€™s only technically true,โ€ she protested. She and Heather and Walker and Maze might not be blood, but they were something even deeper. A self-made family, and yeah, okay, maybe it was a very dysfunctional one, but it felt more real than anything else in her life.

โ€œCome on,โ€ Dillon said, putting his hands on her hips and giving her a frustrated smile. โ€œWhenโ€™s the last time you heard from Maze or Heatherโ€โ€”he set a finger against her lips when she tried to speakโ€”โ€œwhere you didnโ€™t contact them first. I mean, have they offered to help you with the wedding? Theyโ€™re in itโ€”you insisted on them over your local friendsโ€”so . . . where have they been?โ€

She could admit that he had a point. They hadnโ€™t been together since their fight in front of Michaelโ€™s grave. Heather had vanished, just gone dark for a whole year before suddenly responding to Caitlinโ€™s texts again as if nothing had happened. But she still hadnโ€™t been back to Wildstone and wouldnโ€™t give Caitlin much in- formation other than that she was okay and โ€œworking on things.โ€ Whatever that meant.

Caitlin hadnโ€™t seen Maze either, and not for a lack of trying. But theyโ€™d texted and had a few strained calls. And to give Maze credit, she always responded when Caitlin reached out, even with her busy life that was now in Santa Barbara, two hours south of Wildstone.

But Caitlin had, however, seen Walker. Sparingly, but heโ€™d been gone on the job nearly nonstop the past three years. She missed him. She missed all of them and wanted them back together.

And as the self-appointed bossy older sister of the fam, she was determinedโ€”and, okay, also slightly desperateโ€”to make it hap- pen. And yeah, maybe, maybe, sheโ€™d rushed her wedding along, knowing it was the one thing that could bring her siblings of the heart back together. She couldnโ€™t help herself. For whatever rea- son, the four of them had synced and melded into a core family that long-ago year, but they were losing each other, and that scared her. Sheโ€™d already lost Michael; hell if sheโ€™d lose the others too. She needed this so badly she couldnโ€™t even explain it to Dillon. But the truth was the last time sheโ€™d felt vibrantly alive had

been when theyโ€™d all been in her life, and she was just desperate enough to play with fate to make it happen.

โ€œPlease stay, Dillon.โ€

He studied her face and sighed, his eyes lit with affection as he cupped her jaw. โ€œI promised Mom, but Iโ€™ll get back asap. Take care of my babies?โ€

It was the best she was going to get, so she nodded. He brushed a nice, warm kiss across her lips, and then he was gone.

The Summer Deal

Wildstone #5

by Jill Shalvis

Blurb:

Brynn Turner desperately wishes she had it together, but her personal life is like a ping-pong match thatโ€™s left her scaredย and hurt after so many attempts to get it right. In search of a place to lick her wounds and get a fresh start, she heads back home to Wildstone.

And then thereโ€™s Kinsey Davis, who after battling serious health issues her entire twenty-nine years of life, is tired of hoping for . . . well, anything. She’s fierce, tough, and sheโ€™s keeping more than one bombshell of a secret from Brynn — her long-time frenemy.

But then Brynn runs into Kinsey’s best friend, Eli, renewing her childhood crush. The good news: heโ€™s still easy-going and funny and sexy as hell.

The bad news: when he gets her to agree to a summer-time deal to trust him to do right by her, no matter what, she never dreams itโ€™ll result in finding a piece of herself she didnโ€™t even know was missing. She could have real connections, possibly love,ย andย a futureโ€”if she can only learn to let go of the past.

As the long days of summer wind down, the three of them must discover if forgiveness is enough to grasp the unconditional love thatโ€™s right in front of them.

Excerpt:

Brynn Turner had always wanted to be the girl who had her life together, but so far her talents hadnโ€™t led her in that directionโ€”although not for lack of trying.

Mentally recapping the week sheโ€™d just endured, she let out a stuttered breath. Okay, so her life skills needed some serious work, but as far as she was concerned, that was Future Brynnโ€™s problem. Present Brynn had other things on her mind.

Like surviving the rest of the day.

With that goal in mind, she kept her eyes on the road, and three hours and two 7-Eleven hot dogs after leaving Long Beach in her rearview mirror, she pulled into Wildstone. The place that reinvented itself many times over since itโ€™d been an 1800s California wild, wild West town complete with wooden sidewalks, saloons, haunted silver mines, and a brothel. Sandwiched between the Pacific Ocean and green rolling hills filled with wineries and ranches, Wildstone had once been her favorite place on earth.

Parking in the driveway of her childhood home, she took a minute. Itโ€™d been a decade since sheโ€™d lived here. Sheโ€™d gone off to attend college and to conquer the world, though only one of those things had happened. Sheโ€™d been back for visits, but even that had been a while. Six months, in fact. Sheโ€™d stood in this very spot and had asked both of her well-meaning moms to butt out of her life, saying that she knew what she was doing.

Sheโ€™d had no idea what she was doing.

Note to self: You still donโ€™t.

With a sigh, she pulled down her visor and glanced in the mirror, hoping that a miracle had occurred and sheโ€™d see the reflection of someone who had their shit together. Her hair was knotted on top of her head with the string tie from her hoodie because sheโ€™d lost her scrunchie. She was wearing her old glasses because sheโ€™d lost her newer pair. Her face was pale and her eyes were puffy and red from a bad combo of crying and not sleeping. She wore yoga pants that hadnโ€™t seen a yoga class since . . . well, ever, and in spite of being nearly thirty, she had a big, fat zit on her chin.

In short, she looked about as far away from having her shit together as she was from solving world hunger.

Knowing her momsโ€”sweet and loving and nosy as hellโ€”were going to see right through her, she pawed through her purse for a miracle. She found some lip gloss that she also dabbed on each cheek for badly needed color. As a bonus, she found two peanut M&Ms. Couldnโ€™t waste those, could she? She shook her purse looking for more, but nope, she was out of luck.

The theme of her life.

With a sigh, she once again met her own gaze in the mirror. โ€œOkay, hereโ€™s the drill. Youโ€™re okay. Youโ€™re good. Youโ€™re happy to be home. Youโ€™re absolutely not crawling back with your tail between your legs to admit to your moms that they were right about Asshole Ashton.โ€

Swallowing hard, she got out of her hunk-o-junk and grabbed her duffel bag and purse. Sheโ€™d barely made it to the porch before the front door was flung open and there stood her moms in the doorway, some deep maternal instinct letting them know their sole offspring was within smothering distance.

Both in their mid-fifties, their similarities stopped there. Olive was pragmatic and stoic, and God help the person who tried to get anything by her. She was perfectly coifed as always, hair cut in a chic bob, pants and blazer fitted, giving her the look of someone whoโ€™d just walked out of a Wall Street meeting. In sharp comparison, Rainaโ€™s sundress was loose and flowery and flowing, and she wore beads around her neck and wrists that made her jingle pleasantly. She was soft and loving, and quite possibly the kindest soul on earth. And where Olive was economical with her movements, Raina was in constant motion.

Opposites attract . . .

But actually, her moms did have something in common beyond their ageโ€”their warm, loving smiles, both directed at Brynn. It was her own personal miracle that they loved her madly, no matter how many times sheโ€™d messed up and driven them crazy with worry.

And thereโ€™d been a lot of times. Too many to count.

โ€œSweetheart,โ€ Raina said, jingling as always, bringing forth welcome memories: growing vegetables in the back garden, taking long walks on the beach to chase seagulls, and late-night snuggles. Raina opened her arms and Brynn walked right into them, smiling when Olive embraced her from behind.

The three of them stood there for a long beat, wrapped up in each other. Catherine the Great Cat showed up, her appearance forewarned by the bell around her neck. She might be twelve and seemingly frail and delicate, but as with Brynnโ€™s moms, looks were deceiving. Just beneath Catโ€™s skin lived the soul of an ancient prized hunterโ€”hence the bell. No one blamed her for her instinctual drive to do this, but Raina did object to Cat dropping โ€œpresentsโ€ at her feet in the form of cricket heads and various other pieces of dead insects. Which made Cat the most adorable murderer who ever lived. She rubbed her furry face against Brynnโ€™s ankles. Once. Twice.

And then bit.

โ€œOuch!โ€

โ€œYou know her rules,โ€ Olive said. โ€œA little love, a little hate. Itโ€™s how she is. Now tell us why youโ€™re home unannounced, looking like something not even Catherine wouldโ€™ve dragged inside.โ€

โ€œI think she looks wonderful,โ€ Raina said.

Oliveโ€™s eyes never left Brynn. โ€œShe hasnโ€™t been sleeping or eating.โ€

โ€œTrust me, Mom, Iโ€™ve been eating plenty.โ€

โ€œOkay, then you arenโ€™t sleeping enough or eating the right food. Youโ€™re as pale as . . . well, me.โ€

Olive indeed had the pale skin of her English ancestry. In contrast, Raina was Puerto Rican, and golden brown. Being a product of Rainaโ€™s egg and an unknown sperm donor, Brynnโ€™s skin was a few shades lighter than Rainaโ€™s. Unless she was trying not to hyperventilate, of course. Like now. In which case she was probably even whiter than Olive.

โ€œWe can fix the eating right and sleeping, for a start,โ€ Raina said with determination. She slipped her hand into Brynnโ€™s, and as sheโ€™d been doing for as long as Brynn could remember, she took over. She settled Brynn onto the couch with one of her handmade throws, and in less than five minutes had a tray on Brynnโ€™s lap with her famous vegan chickpea noodle soup and steaming gingerroot tea.

โ€œTruth serum?โ€ Brynn asked, only half joking. Raina was magic in the kitchenโ€”and at getting people to spill their guts.

โ€œI donโ€™t need truth serum.โ€ Raina sat next to her. โ€œYouโ€™re going to tell me everything.โ€

โ€œHow do you know?โ€

โ€œBecause I made almond-butter cups for dessert and you love almond-butter cups.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™d withhold dessert from your only child?โ€

โ€œShe wouldnโ€™t, sheโ€™s far too kind,โ€ Olive said. โ€œBut I would. In a heartbeat.โ€ She sat on the coffee table facing Brynn. โ€œTalk.โ€

Review:

Dealing with the good and the bad is what family is all about and Shalvis shows that well once again. This motley group might have managed to make a unit for themselves despite of their differences and troubles, but they aren’t perfect and definitely have some growing to do. With the support of each other they slowly start to figure out how to be good people and better partners, how to own up to their mistakes and learn to do things differently.

Eli is awesome – a stand-up guy, dedicated friend, loving and understanding. He’s just not overly dynamic for a hero. Instead he’s that steadfast force that both Kinsey and Brynn need in their lives. Both girls need a dependable partner to help keep them on the right path.

Brynn has a habit of either avoiding or running from her problems when things get rough, pretty much all her life. It’s time that she finally learn to face things that matter heads on and thanks to Kinsey and Eli she’s going to have to do that.

Kinsey is not the most cuddly of people – prickly is more like it. But under her spikes, she has a big heart but is afraid to get hurt or hurt other people. By pushing people away she thinks she’s doing the right thing. Luckily for her, it doesn’t always work.

Like a lot of people, Deck is one of my favorite people. He’s the big-hearted alpha that a lot of authors are giving us these days. (I love those guys but sometimes you need an Eli too.) He’s willing to put up with Kinsey’s BS and love her anyway. He sees the person underneath and quietly, and sometimes not so quietly, gives her the support that she needs at that time.

Eli’s brother, Max, provides a little bit of fun to their group and I’m thinking that he’ll make an interesting hero in his own book down the road. He seems to have the fewest issues but I’m sure there are one or two just waiting to be explored.

Throw all of these people together, with their past issues, and you are bound to have some difficulties. It takes a bit for Brynn to let go of her feelings for Kinsey and for Kinsey to let her in. And along the way, there are tons of opportunities for misunderstandings and hurt feelings. They all definitely need to figure out how to be a little more upfront and honest with each other, to learn that hiding things is rarely helpful but that turning your back on loves ones that screw up is rarely the right choice. It’s not an easy journey for them, but it does make for good summer reading for us ๐Ÿ™‚

(This is part of a series but I’m pretty sure that’s in name only. All the stories are set in the same California town but that’s about it for how they are related.)

Excerpt:

โ€œWell?โ€ he asked.

She grinned. โ€œThat was possibly the most thrilling ride of my life.โ€

He pulled off her helmet, the look in his eyes saying that he knew he could give her an even more thrilling ride.

She had no doubt. But she hadnโ€™t managed to raise her siblings and get them all a relatively decent life by following a whim, sexy as that whim might be. Sheโ€™d been afraid of commitment with Ry because โ€ฆ well, she still wasnโ€™t one hundred percent sure. But she thought it had something to do with the knowledge that committing to him would mean becoming something she wasnโ€™t โ€“ a person capable of further dividing her heart, handing another chunk of it off to someone, and in turn giving them power to hurt her.

But looking into Camโ€™s gaze, she couldnโ€™t see him ever trying to make her into something she wasnโ€™t. Life with him would only get better.

But they werenโ€™t going to go there. And if that caused a little teeny tiny spark of sadness, she shoved it aside. This wasnโ€™t the time to dwell. She needed to live in the moment. And that needed to go into her journal. She had it in her purse in the truck. โ€œDo you have the keys?โ€

โ€œSure. What do you need, Iโ€™ll get it for you.โ€

Okay, so she could admit her crazy here, or she could keep it to herself. But maybe to prove that this wouldnโ€™t โ€“ couldnโ€™t — last, she gave him the truth. โ€œI need to write something in my journal.โ€

โ€œOkay,โ€ he said without blinking an eye and turned toward the stairs to get to the parking lot.

Just the fact that heโ€™d do it made it okay to stop him. โ€œI can wait.โ€™ Then she stepped into him and pressed her face in the crook of his neck to just breathe him in for a moment, willing herself to remember. Live in the moment. There was no sense in thinking about the future, because as she knew all too well, not everyone got one. So there was no use in spoiling the here and now by running ahead of herself. Besides, she thought as his arms came around her, the here and now was pretty damn amazing. โ€œThank you,โ€ she whispered against his skin, and then, unable to resist, kissed his throat.

Review:

I think that this one should probably fall more into the woman’s fiction category than romance. There is a sweet and fun love story between Cam & Piper, which I don’t think that Shalvis does any kind of disservice to. Cam is the perfect mixture of steady and calm that Piper needs – because that poor girl can be a bit of a mess personally. She’s had a whole lot put on her shoulders, ever since she was little, and not a lot of support for it. And she feels like she’s finally getting to the end of it only to have her siblings back with their own lives in tatters.

This, the family drama, is the heart of the story and I really enjoyed it. Piper has to learn to see her siblings as people with their own lives, making their own decisions (and mistakes), who needs a sister to support them instead of a mother figure. But they also need to learn to see her for the supportive person that she can be, instead of the heavy that she’s had to be to get them through their childhoods. All while discovering the people they want to be moving forward. It’s not easy for any of them to find a new dynamic but with a little help (and some influence from Mr Steady himself) they surely can figure it out … with a minimal amount of bloodshed.

There were moments that made me laugh (Winnie with her tool belt and YouTube videos is awesome), moments that made me cringe (things were definitely going to go badly for Piper when she found out everything), and quite a few times that I felt sorry for all of them. And that’s what makes any book a worthwhile read in my mind.

(Part of a series but definitely can be read as a stand alone.)

Heartbreaker Bay series, Jill Shalvis, Wrapped Up in You

Kelโ€™s been burned once too many times to believe in love, and yet Ivy makes him want things he never imagined. But when her surprising past intrudes, Kel fears that everything sheโ€™s told him has been a lie. Is he willing to fight for a true love story?

(Let me tell you, with a teaser like that this one is too hard for me to resist!)

Wrapped Up in You

A Heartbreaker Bay Novel

by Jill Shalvis

Blurb:

Itโ€™s love. Trust me.

After a lifetime on the move, Ivy Snow is an expert in all things temporaryโ€”schools, friends, and way too many Mr. Wrongs. Now that she owns a successful taco truck in San Francisco and an apartment to call home, Ivyโ€™s reinvented life is on solid ground. And sheโ€™s guarded against anything that can rock it. Like the realities of a past sheโ€™s worked hard to cover up. And especially Kel Oโ€™Donnell. Too hot not to set off alarms, he screams temporary. If only his whispers werenโ€™t so delightfully naughty and irresistible.

Kel, an Idaho sheriff and ranch owner, is on vacay, but Ivyโ€™s a spicy reason to give his short-terms plans a second thought. Best of all, sheโ€™s a tonic for his untrusting heart, burned once and still in repair. But when Ivyโ€™s past intrudes on a perfect romance, Kel fears that everything sheโ€™s told him has been a perfect lie. Now, if only Ivyโ€™s willing to share, Kel will fight for a true love story.

Excerpt:

He held her gaze for a long beat before taking the bag and unzipping it, finding the dishes sheโ€™d put together for him. โ€œNot tacos,โ€ he said in surprise.

โ€œMaking tacos is my job,โ€ she said. โ€œThis was for something else.โ€

โ€œAnd whatโ€™s that?โ€

โ€œAn apology for being โ€ฆ grumpy last night.โ€

โ€œYou werenโ€™t.โ€

She gave him a get real look and he smiled. โ€œOkay, maybe a little. But it was understandable. Youโ€™d just gotten an unfortunate and unfair surprise.โ€ He gently tilted her face up to his. โ€œYou doing okay this morning?โ€

โ€œYes,โ€ she said. โ€œOf course.โ€

โ€œOf course,โ€ he repeated and shook his head. โ€œSmart, tough, and resilient,โ€ he murmured, his gaze on her face.

Now it was her turn to smile. โ€œSome might say stubborn, impulsive, and doesnโ€™t know when to quit.โ€

โ€œYeah,โ€ he said. โ€œBut I find those things very attractive.โ€

Honestly, she didnโ€™t know how to take half the things he said. They made her feel both terrified and exhilarated at the same time. โ€œYouโ€™re a strange man.โ€

โ€œSo Iโ€™ve been told.โ€ He looked over the food. โ€œYou poison any of it?โ€

โ€œNo, and only because Iโ€™d never waste food.โ€ But to prove it, she grabbed the fork sheโ€™d packed and took a bite of her eggs. โ€œMmm,โ€ she moaned before she could stop herself, but hey, sheโ€™d worked out and been on the move ever since, and she was starving. Plus, she made damn good eggs if she said so herself.

Again their eyes met, and that now familiar spark went right through her. She wanted him. Quite badly, if going off her racing pulse meant anything. He was so โ€ฆ what, exactly? Steady? Tough? Intense and yet somehow easy-going, not to mention also extremely easy on the eyes?

โ€œYou didnโ€™t have to cook something special for me,โ€ he said, sounding touched.

โ€œYou helped me last night. I repay my debts.โ€

โ€œI didnโ€™t do it so youโ€™d feel indebted to me,โ€ he said and cocked his head as he studied her for a beat. โ€œSomeday youโ€™re going to have to tell me about the apparent assholes whoโ€™ve been in your life to make you so distrusting of me.โ€

โ€œOh, donโ€™t flatter yourself. Itโ€™s not just you. I donโ€™t trust anyone. And it wasnโ€™t just me paying back a debt,โ€ she admitted. โ€œI wanted to cook for you.โ€ And because that made his smile warm, which in turn made something inside her warm as well, she shrugged and backed up a few steps, needing breathing room. โ€œI also wanted to thank you for your help,โ€ she said, feeling annoyingly awkward as he shoved stacks of plans to one side of the table and started pulling everything else out of her bag with a deep male hum of pleasure when he caught sight of the pancakes.

โ€œAre those blueberry?โ€ he asked very seriously.

She nodded.

โ€œFair warning, if theyโ€™re as good as the eggs, I really am going to drop to my knees and ask you to marry me.โ€

That startled a laugh out of her. โ€œFair warning, if you drop to your knees, Iโ€™m going to use my considerable kickboxing skills on you.โ€

The Lemon Sisters

Wildstone #3

by Jill Shalvis

Blurb:

When Brookeโ€™s older sister, Mindy, shows up at her door with her three kids in tow, she barely recognizes her sibling who looks like sheโ€™s on the verge of a total breakdown. While adventurous, wanderlust Brooke was always the problem child, eager to slip free of Wildstone and its small-town constraints, Mindy was the golden child, who never had a hair out of place or a GPA below 4.0. The Mindy that arrives at Brookeโ€™s apartment however, is a far cry from the ever-perfect doctorโ€™s wife.

Brookeโ€™s further stunned when Mindy asks to trade places with her for a few days so she can pick up her pieces and put herself back together. What Mindy doesnโ€™t realize is that Brooke is just as broken. Her sister needs her though, so Brooke takes the kids and returns to Wildstone.

But how does one go home after seven years away and what feels like a lifetime of secrets? It doesnโ€™t take long for Brooke to come face-to-face with her past, in the form of one tall, dark, sexy mistake. But Garrettโ€™s no longer interested, or so he says. Only his words donโ€™t match his actions, leaving Brooke feeling things she long ago shoved deep.

The sisters begin to wonder if the childhood taunts were true, are they lemons in life? In love? True or not, they know one thingโ€”you canโ€™t run far enough to outpace your demons. And when long-dead secrets surface, theyโ€™ll have to overcome their differences and learn that sometimes the one person who can help you the most is the one you never thought to ask.

Excerpt:

โ€œOkay,โ€ she said. โ€œTime for me to go to bed.โ€

โ€œOr youโ€™re running,โ€ he said. โ€œAgain.โ€

She closed her eyes and told herself to ignore the soft taunt. No matter what theyโ€™d been โ€“ or hadnโ€™t been โ€“ to each other, she wasnโ€™t looking for love with anyone, and certainly not a wash and repeat with the one man who could destroy her. It wasnโ€™t as if sheโ€™d been a monk. Sheโ€™d dated, but she hadnโ€™t let anyone in. Not ever. Even Cole had complained about the brick walls sheโ€™d encased her emotions in.

And he was right. She could get involved to a point, but she always pulled back.

โ€œYou donโ€™t have to run from me, you know,โ€ Garrett said. โ€œThereโ€™s no reason for there to be anything but honesty between us.โ€

Yes, there was… โ€œMaybe Iโ€™m just not feeling it.โ€

Another soft laugh. โ€œOkay.โ€

โ€œHey,โ€ she said and poked a finger in his pec. His hard, ungiving, sexy pec. โ€œIf I was feeling it, youโ€™d know.โ€

โ€œYeah? How?โ€ he challenged.

โ€œIโ€™d be โ€ฆflirty. I certainly wouldnโ€™t be thinking of all of your faults.โ€

He grinned. How like a man to not be worried about his faults.

โ€œSo what are these so-called faults?โ€ he asked, curious. Still not concerned.

“Well, for starters, youโ€™re wearing black knit boxers with bananas on them.โ€

This made him laugh outright. โ€œSomeone sent me a subscription box. They come once a month. Last monthโ€™s pair had cocks all over them.โ€

โ€œLike โ€ฆ chickens, orโ€ฆ?โ€

He was still smiling. โ€œIf youโ€™re curious, Iโ€™ll be happy to wear them tomorrow and give you a peek.โ€

โ€œWhatever,โ€ she said. โ€œAnd the fact that some woman sent you a subscription to undies is another reason Iโ€™m not feeling it. Youโ€™ve stayed friends with every single person youโ€™ve ever met.โ€

โ€œAnd thatโ€™s a fault?โ€

She shrugged. Of course it wasnโ€™t a fault. It was the opposite of a fault. โ€œWell, except for me, of course.โ€

โ€œBecause you donโ€™t answer phone calls, texts, emailsโ€ฆโ€ He tilted his head. โ€œTell me something.โ€

Oh boy. โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œWhy did you and your last boyfriend break up? That Cole guy.โ€

โ€œI told you, heโ€™s my boss.โ€

โ€œBut youโ€™re sleeping together,โ€ he said, his eyes holding hers prisoner. โ€œOr you were.โ€

โ€œHow do you know that?โ€

He smiled grimly. โ€œYou just told me.โ€

Dammit. She crossed her arms over her chest. โ€œWeโ€™re not together if thatโ€™s what youโ€™re asking.โ€

โ€œWhy?โ€

โ€œWhy what?โ€ she asked.

โ€œWhy arenโ€™t you together?โ€ he pressed.

โ€œBecause I donโ€™t like him like that.โ€

Did his eyes warm very slightly, or was that her imagination? โ€œBecause youโ€™re just not feeling it?โ€ he asked mockily, using her words.

She rolled her eyes. โ€œYou think youโ€™re funny. How about we talk about you. Tell me about the girlfriend you said you donโ€™t have. The one who called you the other day for a hookup.โ€

โ€œIt wasnโ€™t a hookup. She dumped me.โ€

She snorted. โ€œRight. You expected me to believe a guy who looks like you do, and is funny and smart like you are, got dumped?โ€

โ€œActually, I expect you to believe whatever I tell you.โ€ He shifted close until they were knee to knee. โ€œBecause Iโ€™ve never lied to you, Brooke. Never will.โ€

Review:

Shalvis is one of the best at creating real people and real situations.ย  In The Lemon Sisters, she perfectly blends together romance, women’s fiction, and family drama to deliver a beautiful tale of connecting to others & finding home again.

After a tragic accident, Brooke has cut herself off from those she loves.ย  She’s coping, but not dealing, and a visit from her desperate sister brings it all back to the surface.ย  And forces her to confront those she’s hurt.

Mindy has lost herself in being a wife, mother, and business owner.ย  She’s feeling overwhelmed & unseen and she is afraid of what it means to her marriage.ย  Desperate, she turns to the sister she barely knows anymore for help.ย  And sets both of them on a path to facing ghosts and old hurts.

I really enjoyed how both of the sisters played a starring role in the book – their individual well-being and their relationship with each other, and with their SOs, is equally important.ย  But even with so much going on, Shalvis handles it fairly and none of it feels shorted.ย  I ended it feeling like I understood everyone’s situation, how they had gotten where they were at the beginning, and felt good about how they managed to get to their HEA.

(Part of a series but each one is pretty much a stand alone.)

Playing for Keeps

Heartbreaker Bay, Book 7

by Jill Shalvis

Avon Books

Jan 22nd, 2019

Blurb:

If youโ€™re planning on falling in loveโ€ฆ

When it comes to the confident, charismatic Caleb Parker, Sadie Lane feels the sparkโ€”the kind that comes from rubbing each other the wrong way. Sheโ€™s yoga pants, heโ€™s a suit. Sheโ€™s a tattoo artist, heโ€™s a straight-laced mogul. But after they accidentally co-rescue an abandoned dog from a storm, Sadie sees a vulnerable side to the seemingly invincible hottie.

Youโ€™d better be sureโ€ฆ

Caleb doesnโ€™t do emotions. Growing up the underdog, heโ€™s learned the hard way to build up an impenetrable wall. Perfect for business. Disastrous for relationships. Heโ€™s never worried about it beforeโ€”not until he finally gets behind Sadieโ€™s armor and begins to fall.

Someone is there to catch you.

Both guarded and vulnerable, Sadie and Caleb are complete opposites. Or are they? Shocked at their undeniable connection, can they ever admit to wanting more? That all depends on what theyโ€™re each willing to risk.

Hot Winter Nights

Heartbreaker Bay โ€“ Book 6

by Jill Shalvis

Avon Books โ€“ Sept 25th, 2018

Blurb:

Who needs mistletoe?

Most people wouldnโ€™t think of a bad Santa case as the perfect Christmas gift. Then again,ย Molly Malone, office manager at Hunt Investigations, isnโ€™t most people, and she could really use a distraction from the fantasies sheโ€™s been having since spending the night with her very secret crush,ย Lucas Knight. Nothing happened, not that Lucas knows thatโ€”but Molly just wants to enjoy being a little naughty for once . . .

Whiskey and pain meds for almost-healed bullet wounds donโ€™t mix. Lucas needs to remember that next time heโ€™s shot on the job, which may be sooner rather than later if Mollyโ€™s brother, Joe, finds out about them. Lucas canโ€™t believe heโ€™s drawing a blank on his (supposedly) passionate tryst with Molly, whoโ€™s the hottest, smartest, strongest woman heโ€™s ever known. Strong enough to kick his butt if she discovers heโ€™s been assigned to babysit her on her first case. And hot enough to melt his cold heart this Christmas . . .

Rainy Day Friends

A Wildstone Novel

by Jill Shalvis

Harper Collins โ€“ June 19, 2018

Blurb:

Following theย USA Today bestselling author ofย Lost and Found Sistersย comes Jill Shalvis’ moving story of heart, loss, betrayal, and friendship

Six months after Lanie Jacobsโ€™ husbandโ€™s death, itโ€™s hard to imagine anything could deepen her sense of pain and loss. But then Lanie discovers she isnโ€™t the only one grieving his sudden passing. A serial adulterer, he left behind several other women who, like Lanie, each believe she was his legally wedded wife.

Rocked by the infidelity, Lanie is left to grapple with searing questions. How could she be so wrong about a man she thought she knew better than anyone? Will she ever be able to trust another person?ย  Can she even trust herself?

Desperate to make a fresh start, Lanie impulsively takes a job at the family-run Capriotti Winery. At first, she feels like an outsider among the boisterous Capriottis. With no real family of her own, sheโ€™s bewildered by how quickly they all take her under their wing and make her feel like she belongs. Especially Mark Capriotti, a gruffly handsome Air Force veteran turned deputy sheriff who manages to wind his way into Lanieโ€™s cold, broken heartโ€”along with the

rest of the clan.

Everything is finally going well for her, but the arrival of River Brown changes all that. The fresh-faced twenty-one-year old seems as sweet as they comeโ€ฆuntil her dark secrets come to lightโ€”secrets that could destroy the new life Lanieโ€™s only just begun to build.ย

Review:

I’ve taken a little break from reading Shalvis’s books and I have absolutely NO idea why.ย  They are always well paced and delightfully written, with the perfect combination of humor, emotion, and spice.ย  The characters never fail to be interesting and I always feel like I finished one of her stories having made new friends.

Lanie has been dealt a bit of a blow from life, both with a pretty difficult upbringing to a marriage that didn’t go the way she expected.ย  She’s trying her best to hold herself together but sometimes she unravels a bit, much to the reader’s glee.ย  Watching her try to resist Mark and the rest of the Capriottis is a hoot, since you know she’s going to fail.

Being first a military man then a law enforcement officer & single dad, plus a lifetime of dealing with his family, has given Mark a lot of patience.ย  Which he’ll need to take on Lanie ๐Ÿ™‚ย  He’s definitely one of my favorite heroes of this year – strong, caring, dedicated, and just so darn cute with his girls.

Lanie is going to have to come to terms with a lot – about herself, her deepening attachment to the Capriottis, her upbringing, and the fall-out from her marriage.ย  But if she can find a way to work through it all, she just might find herself a perfectly wonderful HEA.ย  It’s not going to be easy, and she faces quite a few bumps, but Shalvis has her handling it with style, humor, and a few neuroses along the way ๐Ÿ™‚

Excerpt:

Chapter 1

โ€œIโ€™ve finished my free trial of adulthood and am no longer interested, so please cancel my subscription.โ€ From The Mixed Up Files of Tillyโ€™s journal.

Tilly Adams sat in the vetโ€™s office staring at the doctor in shock. โ€œSay that again?โ€

Dr. Janet Lyons smiled. โ€œI think Leo faked being sick. Probably so youโ€™d stay home from work today.โ€

Tilly looked down at Leo. โ€œYou do know heโ€™s a dog, right?โ€

All six pounds of him smiled up at her. About a month ago, she found him on a street corner hiding beneath a bus bench; wet, dirty, cold, hungry and matted. Heโ€™d been Dobby meets Gremlin meets neglected, abused Care Bear. Tilly had looked around for an adult, and then had to remind herself that at twenty-five years old, she was legal herself. So then sheโ€™d searched for an adultier adult, but sheโ€™d been the only one in sight.

So sheโ€™d scooped the little guy up and had brought him to the SPCA, whoโ€™d said he was about five weeks old, a possible Maltipoo, which meant he came by his care bear look naturally. He was malnutritioned and suffering from mange. Theyโ€™d said theyโ€™d do what they could, and Tilly had turned to go. That had been when sheโ€™d seen all the eyes on her from an endless row of cages โ€ฆ and sheโ€™d realized her care bear would soon be sitting in one too. Then sheโ€™d heard herself offer to foster him until they found him a forever home.

Theyโ€™d found him one too. Tilly had signed the adoption papers last weekend in spite of the fact that just that morning heโ€™d escaped his crate, eaten her favorite sneakers, destroyed her favorite pillow, and then yakked up the stuffing from the pillow.

He was a destructo of the highest magnitude, and something else too. He had no idea how small he was. He went after her sister Quinnโ€™s twenty-plus pound cat and her neighborโ€™s hundred pound black lab with the same fierce, fearless gusto. Turned out, the little guy had a bad case of small-man syndrome, which was how heโ€™d earned his name.

Leo, short for Napoleon.

And now on top of Leoโ€™s impressive chewing skills, his escape artist skills, and his ability to get up on her bed and yet still not understand why stepping in his own poop was annoying, he had a new skill.

Heโ€™d faked being sick.

Proud of himself, Leo smiled up at her. Smiled. An hour ago heโ€™d been coughing and limping and acting all sorts of odd. Now he just kept smiling up at her while sending her meaningful glances at the open dog biscuit bin between her and the doctor.

Dr. Lyons laughed and gave him one.

โ€œDogs canโ€™t fake sick,โ€ Tilly said while Leo inhaled the biscuit whole before licking the floor to make sure he got all the crumbs. โ€œCan they?โ€

Dr. Lyons scooped him up and gave him a kiss on his adorable snout. โ€œYours did.โ€
Tilly sighed. It was too early for this. Sheโ€™d had a crazy late night. Not hanging at Whiskey River, the local bar and grill. Not at a club with friends. Not working on her designs for he upcoming graphic art showing.

Nope, sheโ€™d been on a serious stress bender — a marathon of Game Of Thrones. She hadnโ€™t fallen asleep until after two and her alarm had interrupted her in the middle of a really great dream starring Jon Snow.

Dr. Lyons handed Leo over. He immediately snuggled into the crook of Tillyโ€™s neck and dammit, her cold heart melted on the spot and she hugged him close. โ€œYouโ€™re sure heโ€™s okay? He was coughing. And then he limped funny. And then he wouldnโ€™t eat.โ€

โ€œBut he hasnโ€™t coughed once that Iโ€™ve seen. And heโ€™s not limping either. And you said all his food vanished while you took a quick shower.โ€

โ€œYes,โ€ Tilly said.

Dr. Lyons waited for her to catch up.

Tilly sighed. โ€œHe really did fake me out.โ€
