A Heartbreaker Bay Novel
by Jill Shalvis
Blurb:
Itโs love. Trust me.
After a lifetime on the move, Ivy Snow is an expert in all things temporaryโschools, friends, and way too many Mr. Wrongs. Now that she owns a successful taco truck in San Francisco and an apartment to call home, Ivyโs reinvented life is on solid ground. And sheโs guarded against anything that can rock it. Like the realities of a past sheโs worked hard to cover up. And especially Kel OโDonnell. Too hot not to set off alarms, he screams temporary. If only his whispers werenโt so delightfully naughty and irresistible.
Kel, an Idaho sheriff and ranch owner, is on vacay, but Ivyโs a spicy reason to give his short-terms plans a second thought. Best of all, sheโs a tonic for his untrusting heart, burned once and still in repair. But when Ivyโs past intrudes on a perfect romance, Kel fears that everything sheโs told him has been a perfect lie. Now, if only Ivyโs willing to share, Kel will fight for a true love story.

Excerpt:
He held her gaze for a long beat before taking the bag and unzipping it, finding the dishes sheโd put together for him. โNot tacos,โ he said in surprise.
โMaking tacos is my job,โ she said. โThis was for something else.โ
โAnd whatโs that?โ
โAn apology for being โฆ grumpy last night.โ
โYou werenโt.โ
She gave him a get real look and he smiled. โOkay, maybe a little. But it was understandable. Youโd just gotten an unfortunate and unfair surprise.โ He gently tilted her face up to his. โYou doing okay this morning?โ
โYes,โ she said. โOf course.โ
โOf course,โ he repeated and shook his head. โSmart, tough, and resilient,โ he murmured, his gaze on her face.
Now it was her turn to smile. โSome might say stubborn, impulsive, and doesnโt know when to quit.โ
โYeah,โ he said. โBut I find those things very attractive.โ
Honestly, she didnโt know how to take half the things he said. They made her feel both terrified and exhilarated at the same time. โYouโre a strange man.โ
โSo Iโve been told.โ He looked over the food. โYou poison any of it?โ
โNo, and only because Iโd never waste food.โ But to prove it, she grabbed the fork sheโd packed and took a bite of her eggs. โMmm,โ she moaned before she could stop herself, but hey, sheโd worked out and been on the move ever since, and she was starving. Plus, she made damn good eggs if she said so herself.
Again their eyes met, and that now familiar spark went right through her. She wanted him. Quite badly, if going off her racing pulse meant anything. He was so โฆ what, exactly? Steady? Tough? Intense and yet somehow easy-going, not to mention also extremely easy on the eyes?
โYou didnโt have to cook something special for me,โ he said, sounding touched.
โYou helped me last night. I repay my debts.โ
โI didnโt do it so youโd feel indebted to me,โ he said and cocked his head as he studied her for a beat. โSomeday youโre going to have to tell me about the apparent assholes whoโve been in your life to make you so distrusting of me.โ
โOh, donโt flatter yourself. Itโs not just you. I donโt trust anyone. And it wasnโt just me paying back a debt,โ she admitted. โI wanted to cook for you.โ And because that made his smile warm, which in turn made something inside her warm as well, she shrugged and backed up a few steps, needing breathing room. โI also wanted to thank you for your help,โ she said, feeling annoyingly awkward as he shoved stacks of plans to one side of the table and started pulling everything else out of her bag with a deep male hum of pleasure when he caught sight of the pancakes.
โAre those blueberry?โ he asked very seriously.
She nodded.
โFair warning, if theyโre as good as the eggs, I really am going to drop to my knees and ask you to marry me.โ
That startled a laugh out of her. โFair warning, if you drop to your knees, Iโm going to use my considerable kickboxing skills on you.โ
