Catherine Bybee, First Wives series, Say It Again

I just love Bybee’s books and always get super excited to see she has a new one out. So I’m just about giddy to have her here to share a little about it (out tomorrow)!

*****

1) Sasha, from your newest novelย Say it Again, is unlike any character that most readers will have encountered. Can you give us a rundown of your heroine?

Sasha is a female James Bond with all the skills that kick ass and the sexy that opens doors. Sheโ€™s a master of disguises, speaks more languages than anyone shouldโ€ฆand has a razor-sharp mind that doesnโ€™t sleep. In all her badassery, (pretty sure I just made up that word) Sasha has a soft spotโ€”a vulnerability that makes her want to protect the innocent. Sheโ€™s a true to life superhero who walks the fence between right and wrong. She really doesnโ€™t have any issues breaking laws to get what she wants. And thatโ€™s what makes her so fun to read, and for me to write.

2) Fans have been following Sasha throughout your First Wives series. Did you always know you wanted to write her story?

No! Not at all. The first four books in the series were going to be it. However, Sasha commanded attention the first moment she walked on the page and I couldnโ€™t get enough of her once I dreamed her up. I was almost finished writing the first book when I decided that Sasha was not going to be a bad guy. Yes, Iโ€™m a pantser, and have no real outline before I sit down to write. I think the fact that I didnโ€™t know she was one of the good guys made her all that more believable. I donโ€™t even think she knew she was going to be on the side of right and justice until the end ofย Fool Me Once.

3) While many of your novels have a mystery or suspense element, you dive head first into action and spy-games in this book. How easy was this transition for you?

It was super easy and tons of fun. In factโ€ฆ I think I may have a spin off of a spin off rolling in my head with all the fun characters I played with while writing this book. Neil was one of my very first book boyfriends from the Weekday Brides. And having him come back in this book just reminded me how much fun it is to write all the action and intrigue. I hope my fans love it enough for me to continue the theme with new books.

4) When AJ is first introduced he seems pretty averageโ€”just a guy looking for answers about his sisterโ€™s death. But in reality, there is nothing average about AJ. How would you describe him?ย

The best picture in my mine that I can describe with all clarity is Brian Oโ€™Connor, Paul Walker (RIP), fromย Fast and Furious. Innocent until he isnโ€™t.

I would say that AJ is exactly what Sasha needed to open up and accept that she too can be loved. I wanted AJ to come off as average until he wasnโ€™t. Sasha is such a strong character that she needed someone who wasnโ€™t going to try and overpower or overshadow her badassery (love that word). AJ does that. Yet he has some badass moments himself and that is what makes her fall for him even more. He is in no way perfect and neither is she.

5) AJ and Sasha have something in commonโ€”they are both characters with lots and lots of secrets. What makes them open up to each other? What else do they have in common?ย

Trust through time. Thatโ€™s the best way for me to describe how they evolved in my head. There is a common respect the moment they โ€œacquireโ€ the otherโ€™s phone. A moment where they take notice and begin to respect the other. Honor among thieves as they say. I think the common ground that isnโ€™t apparent until the story evolves is how they want the love of a family. AJ is much more open to it than Sasha, but they both have to fight for it in the end.

6) While you have written books with scenes in foreign countries, this story takes place internationally. Have you visited the same places as your characters? Where do you hope to take readers around the world in the future?

Yes, I have been to all the places I have written about. I was in Berlin a couple of years ago at a book signing and managed to get their by taking the train from London, through Amsterdam etc. So yes, Iโ€™m blessed to have visited these places which makes the story that much richer in my opinion. Richter, the school in the story, is from my imagination. I did some fact checking and learned that post Hitlerโ€™s Germany, military boarding schools were not welcome in the country. So I made one up and made it as great and awful as I could while still making it believable.

I have placed most of my travels, or experiences from them, in my books. And as I travel the world, I will bring my readers alongโ€ฆeventually.

7)ย Say it Againย wraps up your First Wives series. What have you learned while writing these books? Will these lessons affect your writing in the future?ย

On a personal level, I will say that Iโ€™ve leaned to write with a great deal of personal turmoil. There have been times Iโ€™ve doubted my process and this final book in the series has told me to never do that again. I would like to always keep the door open for more books because of characters like Sasha. I love writing fast moving romantic suspense and intrigue and can see Claire, Cooper and the whole of Neilโ€™s team as a great setting for future books. Yeahโ€ฆ Iโ€™m liking that idea more and more. I hope my readers do, too.

Say It Again

First Wives series

by Catherine Bybee

Release Date: September 24, 2019

Publisher: Montlake

Blurb:

Protector-for-hire Sasha Budanov is accustomed to life as a loner. Always on the move, sheโ€™s now reached a crossroad. Looking for answers about her shadowy youth, sheโ€™s returned to the strict boarding school in Germany where she was raised. Itโ€™s also where she was trained in the stealthy, militarized art of survival. But behind its gleaming gates, Richter is a fortress of secrets, including those buried in Sashaโ€™s mysterious past. To uncover them, sheโ€™s clinging to her first rule of defense: stay guarded.

If anyone can challenge Sashaโ€™s rules, itโ€™s devilishly sexy stranger AJ Hofmann. He wants answers, too. And he needs Sashaโ€™s help. The recent deaths of several of Richterโ€™s former studentsโ€”including AJโ€™s own sisterโ€”have aroused his suspicions. Heโ€™s arousing something more in Sasha. Never one to surrender to her emotions, she senses something tempting in AJ. She trusts him. Heโ€™s fearless. And he kisses like a demon. Sashaโ€™s found her match.

But treading Richterโ€™s dark hallsโ€”and following their heartsโ€”has its risks. As the decades-old secrets of the past are mined, Sasha and AJ are falling deeper in love . . . and into danger.

Excerpt:

AJ was being stood up.

It was half past noon and Sasha wasnโ€™t there.

The Brandenburg Gate was one of the busiest tourist attractions in Berlin. The square was filled with families and walking tours led by someone holding a colored flag on a stick and talking into a microphone while a line of dazed, zombie-like visitors followed behind. Aside from those in the square learning about the history of the place, there were a dozen police officers and security guards moving around. Considering the American, British, and French embassies were all within a stoneโ€™s throw of each other, AJ was surprised there wasnโ€™t a stronger military presence.

AJ kept scanning the crowd in search of Sex on a Stick in black leather pants and a bad attitude.

Nothing.

Left without options, AJ dialed his phone number on her phone and waited. It rang twice.

Behind him, the riff of โ€œBad to the Bone,โ€ his ringtone, shot through him. He dropped his hand from his ear and saw a blonde standing three feet away, her back to him.

Slowly she turned.

โ€œWhoa.โ€

Sasha stared back at him, wearing white capri pants and a bright floral top. The blonde wig overdid it but completely camouflaged her in broad daylight. She took a step closer, reached out her hand holding his cell. โ€œHello, AJ.โ€

They switched phones. โ€œHow long have you been standing there?โ€

โ€œHalf an hour, give or take.โ€

He looked her up and down. She looked like a typical American housewife, minus the kid in the stroller. โ€œImpressive.โ€

โ€œI wanted to make sure you were alone.โ€

AJ glanced around at the passing tourists. โ€œIs there a reason behind the cloak-and-dagger?โ€

She moved closer, lowered her voice. โ€œYouโ€™ve come here to look for your sisterโ€™s killer. You think there is some connection to Richter. Went so far as to go there asking questions. Youโ€™re stalking the local pub and hitting on, not to mention stealing from, the patrons . . .โ€ Sasha waved her phone in the air before tucking it into her back pocket.

โ€œIโ€™m calling pot to kettle on that last accusation.โ€ Although all the rest she pointed out was spot-on.

โ€œI like to go unnoticed. If someone followed me here, they lost me the second I made the city limits and went clothes shopping.โ€

โ€œWhat if someone followed me?โ€

โ€œThen I would have seen them watching in the thirty minutes youโ€™ve been standing around looking like a lost child without a parent.โ€ She turned and started walking toward the gate.

AJ had no choice but to follow.

โ€œWhat makes you think anyone is following either of us?โ€

She smiled, didnโ€™t answer his question. โ€œI used to help your sister on her agility training,โ€ she told him.

The mention of his sister brought his attention back to what he should be focused on. โ€œShe wasnโ€™t the most athletic woman.โ€ Amelia took after their mother, who didnโ€™t grow more than five feet five inches tall and had a sweet tooth that always kept her rounder than sheโ€™d liked. At least thatโ€™s what sheโ€™d blame when she went on one of her many diets.

โ€œNo. But she held her own most of the time. Everyone at Richter was pushed to do at least that.โ€

โ€œHer coworkers said she had recently started taking morning walks before work,โ€ AJ said.

โ€œWhich explains the police report about her being murdered in the park and tossed in the river.โ€

AJ stopped walking. โ€œYou looked her up.โ€

โ€œOnly because I knew her.โ€

He jumped in front of her, stopped her from moving. โ€œThen youโ€™ll help me.โ€

โ€œThere is nothing to suggest that Ameliaโ€™s death is at all linked to Richter.โ€

AJ looked over Sashaโ€™s shoulder and noticed a man eating an ice cream cone and staring at Sasha. The middle-aged guy turned his attention away and took a few steps in the opposite direction.

โ€œMaybe she . . .โ€

AJ felt eyes, turned to his left.

No one.

โ€œWhat is it?โ€ Sasha asked.

โ€œThe guy with the ice cream, over your left shoulder.โ€

She grinned, cocked her head to the side. โ€œWe did this last night.โ€

โ€œYeah, only Iโ€™m not asking you to lay a lip lock on me. Tempting as that might be.โ€ Truth was, heโ€™d thought about that kiss more times than he wanted to admit. โ€œIf how youโ€™re dressed is any indication, youโ€™re the expert on all things undercover. You tell me if you feel the weight of someoneโ€™s stare.โ€

Sasha paused, then looked over her shoulder. โ€œThat him?โ€ she asked, thumbing toward the guy with the ice cream.

โ€œYeah.โ€

She grabbed AJโ€™s hand and walked directly toward the guy he thought for sure was watching them.

โ€œWhat are you doing?โ€

She didnโ€™t answer. โ€œExcuse me?โ€ Her voice rose a full octave, her smile was sickeningly sweet. Any accent heโ€™d detected from her voice was gone . . . or changed.

The man with the cone turned toward them. โ€œYes?โ€

โ€œAre you American? You look American.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m, ah . . . yeah.โ€ The guy looked directly at AJ.

Sasha kept going. โ€œGood. Would you mind taking our picture? I canโ€™t get the gate behind us with a selfie.โ€

Again the guy offered AJ unblinking eyes. โ€œAh, sure.โ€ He reached for the phone Sasha was handing him.

Next thing AJ realized, he was standing beside Sasha, her arm slipped around his waist, and he was smiling like all of the other tourists surrounding them while the man he thought was spying on them took their picture.

The stranger holding Sashaโ€™s phone, while trying to balance his ice cream cone, looked completely out of place.

โ€œTake a second one, just in case.โ€ Sasha giggled.

The sound of her voice didnโ€™t suit her. The hand on his waist, however, suited him just fine. The feel of her there, the warmth, the softness he knew she would hate if he pointed it out, felt a little too right.

โ€œThank you so much.โ€

The stranger handed her phone back with a nod. โ€œHave fun.โ€

She waved. โ€œWe will . . . thanks.โ€

And he was gone.

AJ watched the man slip away as Sasha removed herself from AJโ€™s side.

He missed her warmth, instantly.

โ€œAny self-preserving spy wouldnโ€™t have made contact,โ€ Sasha told him.

The two of them walked toward the center of the square. โ€œOkay,โ€ AJ started. โ€œMaybe Iโ€™m a little paranoid.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re a lot paranoid.โ€

AJ paused in the middle of the plaza and stared at the massive horses that sat atop the gate. The image of his sister at Christmas the previous year surfaced. It was the last time heโ€™d seen her alive. โ€œI know Ameliaโ€™s death wasnโ€™t random, Sasha. I feel it with every breath I take.โ€

She sighed. โ€œI know you do.โ€

He looked at her. โ€œYou donโ€™t believe me.โ€

โ€œI believe you believe.โ€

He lowered his head, studied the salt-and-pepper colored stones beneath his feet. โ€œYouโ€™re not going to help.โ€ Damn it . . . he was back to ground zero.

Another heavy sigh from the woman at his side. โ€œI will help you.โ€

AJ snapped his head up. โ€œWhat?โ€

She placed a hand in the air as in warning. โ€œNot because I think you have anything other than grief inside you. The not knowing, or never accepting the facts, can eat you alive.โ€

Not ground zero. He wanted to kiss her. Not that she would be receptive to that kind of thing. โ€œWhy are you doing this?โ€ There wasnโ€™t anything in it for her. Sasha turned away from him and focused her attention on the Brandenburg Gate.

โ€œBecause Iโ€™m not bored.โ€

Excerpt:

Victor noticed Shannon sitting in the open dining area of the hotel the next morning, drinking coffee and reading on her e-reader. Heโ€™d spent most of the previous day licking his metaphorical wounds and nursing a headache.

Dressed in cotton pants that went midcalf and a light shirt, she looked like she was dressed for a long plane ride home. As much a pain in the ass as the woman had been, he felt compelled to say goodbye. After all, he was the reason she was there.

He walked up quietly behind her. โ€œIf it isnโ€™t woman who fed me mezcal.โ€

The sound of his voice made her jump.

Too bad she wasnโ€™t holding her coffee.

โ€œYou have got to stop doing that.โ€

Without an invitation, he sat and smiled. She took a deep breath and looked away, came painfully close to rolling her eyes. For some reason, he appreciated the fact she held back and wondered just how much it would take for her to disregard him with such a gesture.

โ€œPlease, sit down,โ€ she said.

He glanced at his chair. โ€œThank you.โ€

She set her e-reader aside and regarded him. โ€œI thought for sure youโ€™d be back at the office by now.โ€

So did he. โ€œI couldnโ€™t fly yesterday even if Iโ€™d found a flight.โ€

โ€œOh?โ€

He didnโ€™t miss the tiny shine in the corner of her eye.

โ€œNo. I had one too many the other night. Inflicting that on whoever had the misfortune of sitting next to me on the flight home was more than I could take after my flight here.โ€

She smiled, briefly, and lifted her chin. โ€œIโ€™m glad to hear youโ€™ve evolved since Friday.โ€

Unable to help himself, he laughed.

Her smile returned.

Victor felt a twist in his gut, a pull to something he didnโ€™t want to name. โ€œI guess youโ€™re leaving today,โ€ he said.

She shrugged. โ€œI am.โ€

He nodded. โ€œJustin informed me you made sure I didnโ€™t decide to go for a late night swim.โ€

โ€œIt was tempting. But then I realized you wouldnโ€™t be able to pay me if you swallowed too much water.โ€

โ€œSelf-preserving. Very smart of you.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s a gift.โ€

When the woman wasnโ€™t tossing barbs at him, she was beautiful. Perfect lines in her face, high cheekbones โ€ฆ he couldnโ€™t tell if her olive skin was from an ancestor or the byproduct of living in Southern California. Not anything like anyone heโ€™d been attracted to before.

What was he thinking? He wasnโ€™t attracted.

Victor shook his head and stood. โ€œWell, I saw you sitting here and thought Iโ€™d at least say goodbye.โ€

She stood with him and extended her hand. โ€œFor what itโ€™s worth, Iโ€™m sorry things didnโ€™t go as planned this weekend.โ€

Her fingers were long, elegant. Just like the woman. Disappointment saying goodbye was an emotion he had no business feeling. Yet there it was, like a lump in his chest.

โ€œAre you?โ€

Her smile cracked. โ€œNo. But it seemed the right thing to say. I am sorry for the heartache. Thatโ€™s never easy, even if itโ€™s for the right reason.โ€

Victor realized he was still shaking her hand and let go.

โ€œGoodbye, Victor. Good luck to you.โ€

โ€œGoodbye, Shannon.โ€ And because it was the appropriate thing to do once you said goodbye, Victor walked away. When he turned to take a last look, Shannon sharply moved her gaze to her coffee.

*****

Excerpt:

Averyโ€™s head shot up at the sound of a female voice calling her name.

โ€œLori?โ€

Oh, damnโ€ฆ

When Lori was at their table, Avery detached from Liamโ€™s side and stood for a hug. โ€œWhat are you doing here? Whereโ€™s Reed?โ€

Lori eyed Liam while she answered the questions. โ€œReedโ€™s on his way down. Weโ€™re going out to dinner. Wanted a drink first.โ€

What were the chances of Lori excusing herself before Avery was forced to make an introduction?

Lori reached out a hand toward Liam. โ€œIโ€™m Lori.โ€

Liam stood; a broad smile matched his broad chest. โ€œLiam Holt.โ€ Once he released Loriโ€™s hand, he pulled out a bar stool. โ€œSit, we just ordered drinks.โ€

Avery wanted to elbow his ribs.

Instead, she smiled.

Liam signaled for Nikki.

โ€œLiam, huh? Avery hasnโ€™t mentioned you.โ€

He pulled Averyโ€™s chair closer to his and waited for her to sit. โ€œWe havenโ€™t known each other long.โ€

Lori sent a questioning look to Avery. Instead of adding to Liamโ€™s explanation.

โ€œIโ€™ve known Lori for a few years. We live in the same building.โ€

โ€œWhat do you do, Liam?โ€

Small talk โ€ฆ is that what this was going to be?

Lori signaled Reed when he walked in the door. โ€œThis is my husband.โ€

Avery laughed. โ€œYou love saying that, donโ€™t you?โ€

Lori nodded.

โ€œTheyโ€™re newlyweds,โ€ Avery explained.

Once again Liam stood when Reed approached the table.

โ€œLook who I found,โ€ Lori said.

Reed kissed Averyโ€™s cheek. โ€œI havenโ€™t seen you here in a while.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s because you two never come up for air,โ€ Avery teased.

โ€œThis is Liam โ€ฆ Averyโ€™s friend.โ€ Yeah, Lori wanted more details.

The men shook hands.

โ€œHave I ever met one of your friends?โ€ he asked.

Avery glared. โ€œSmooth, Reed โ€ฆ really smooth.โ€

Lori nudged her husbandโ€™s arm. โ€œStop teasing.โ€ She turned her focus on Liam. โ€œAvery keeps her private life private.โ€

Avery tried not to flinch when Liam placed a hand over hers. โ€œIโ€™ve figured that out recently.โ€

โ€œHow did you two meet?โ€ Reed asked.

Avery said โ€œthe gymโ€ at the same time Liam said โ€œa bar.โ€

Loriโ€™s lawyer radar spiked. Avery saw it in her eyes. โ€œThose two things are worlds apart.โ€

She caught Liamโ€™s hand and squeezed.

โ€œThe first time I saw you was at Pugโ€™s Bar. I approached you at the gym.โ€

โ€œI knew it. That was you at Pugโ€™s. How did you figure out where I worked out?โ€ Sheโ€™d been asking herself that question for over a week.

โ€œThat wasnโ€™t hard. Leslie had a gym bag.โ€

โ€œWhoโ€™s Leslie?โ€ Lori asked.

Avery didnโ€™t look away from Liam. โ€œA friend. So your job at the gym wasnโ€™t on accident?โ€

โ€œI might have approached Brenda about a side job so I could meet you.โ€

Averyโ€™s jaw dropped.

โ€œWhoโ€™s Brenda?โ€ Reed asked.

โ€œThe owner of the gym,โ€ Avery and Liam said at the same time. โ€œHow did you know I was there on Tuesday and Friday nights?โ€ She wasnโ€™t sure if his actions were exciting or scary.

โ€œAppointment book. Brendaโ€™s office is always open.โ€

โ€œWait, wait, wait.โ€ Lori placed a hand between the two of theirs. โ€œYou see Avery in a bar. You search out a location of her gym, follow her to it, get a job there, and now youโ€™re both here having drinks?โ€

Liam offered a brief, unapologetic nod.

Lori grabbed Averyโ€™s hand. โ€œHow well do you know this guy?โ€

Avery liked the gleam in Liamโ€™s eyes. โ€œHeโ€™s safe.โ€

โ€œWhat he just described is a little too close to stalking for my taste.โ€

Reed placed a hand on Loriโ€™s shoulder. โ€œSimmer down, Counselor. If Liam had an ulterior motive, he wouldnโ€™t have told us all that.โ€

โ€œI wanted to meet you,โ€ Liam said.

“Yeah, well, youโ€™ve met her.โ€ Lori wasnโ€™t happy.

Nikki showed up with Averyโ€™s and Liamโ€™s drinks.

โ€œMy usual, Nikki,โ€ Lori told her.

โ€œHon, our reservations are in thirty minutes. Maybe we should go.โ€

Lori looked at Reed like he was crazy. โ€œWe arenโ€™t leaving him with her. He could be a sociopath.”

Liam smiled, his eyes crinkling with amusement. โ€œIโ€™m not.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s what they all say.โ€

Avery put a free hand in the air. โ€œChill, Lori.โ€

Avery realized that her other hand had somehow ended up back in Liamโ€™s. His thumb stroked the underside of her wrist in a strangely calming way.

โ€œDo you want a drink, Reed?โ€ Nikki was still standing there, watching the four of them.

โ€œNo, thank you. Weโ€™re leaving.โ€

Lori pushed back her chair. โ€œWeโ€™re going to talk about this later,โ€ she warned Avery. โ€œAnd you โ€ฆ just so you know, Iโ€™m an attorney, and my big, burly husband here is in private security. He has even bigger friends.โ€

Liam reached into his back pocket and removed his wallet. From it, he pulled out what looked like a business card. โ€œI have nothing to hide.โ€

Lori glanced at it briefly before Reed snatched it from her fingertips. โ€œCโ€™mon. Letโ€™s leave them to their date.โ€

Liam stood again and shook Reedโ€™s hand before he ushered Lori out of the bar.

โ€œThat was intense.โ€

โ€œMy friends are protective.โ€

โ€œUnderstatement.โ€

โ€œYou really went through all that just to meet me?โ€

Liam picked up his cocktail for the first time. โ€œWorked, didnโ€™t it?โ€

Avery let loose his hand and lifted her glass to his. โ€œYes, it did.โ€

by Catherine Bybee

Release Date: July 31, 2018

Publisher: Montlake Romance

Blurb:

Trina Petrovโ€™s marriage-by-contract was only meant to be temporary. But when tragedy strikes, Trina is left one of the wealthiest women in the world. To recover from the shock, she takes some time off in Italy, swearing not to fall for any men while there. But that doesnโ€™t mean she canโ€™t fall for anyoneย on the trip homeย .ย .ย .

Country-music superstar Wade Thomas is lying low in a hotel bar when he gets the cold shoulder from the woman next to him. Heโ€™s used to fans fawning at his boots, and Trina is a refreshing changeโ€”so is the fact that she has no idea who he is.

As things begin to heat up, Trina discovers that the circumstances of her late husbandโ€™s death are not what they seemed. Now sheโ€™s in trouble, and Wade isnโ€™t about to let her out of his sight. Getting close to love and danger could get them killed .ย .ย . or it could sweep them both off their feet.

Excerpt:

They closed the bar and took their last round to the hotel lobby.

Wade had to admit he was a bit more than tipsy, and Trina wasnโ€™t exactly sober. Sheโ€™d tucked her feet under her on the lobby sofa as she described Venice in a way that made him want to visit.

โ€œThere isnโ€™t one car?โ€ he asked.

โ€œNo place for them. You only get around on foot or boat. Which is probably best to help counter the pasta you consume while youโ€™re there.โ€

โ€œSo why did you pick Venice?โ€

Her eyes drifted away, something Wade had noticed happened a lot when she was lost in thought. A hint of sorrow quickly came and went, almost as if she caught herself. The smile she flashed felt forced. โ€œI wanted isolation so I could study.โ€

โ€œStudy?โ€ She rattled off something that went completely over his head.

Her dark brown eyes glistened with her smile. โ€œIโ€™m learning Italian.โ€

Wade blew out a breath. โ€œOh, thank God. I thought maybe that last beer was one too many.โ€

โ€œI like languages.โ€

โ€œAs in many?โ€

โ€œA few.โ€

He was happy to speak English. โ€œIโ€™m impressed.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t be. Most Europeans are fluent in a minimum of two languages.โ€

โ€œAre you from Europe?โ€

โ€œNo. Born and raised in Southern California. My grandparents on my motherโ€™s side are from Mexico. Spanish was always spoken in our home.โ€

โ€œSo you speak Spanish as well?โ€ He squirmed in his chair.

โ€œYup.โ€

โ€œNow Iโ€™m feelinโ€™ a bit inferior.โ€

โ€œLanguage is my hidden talent,โ€ she said.

โ€œSo how did you end up in Texas?โ€

Her gaze met his before she wrinkled her nose and gave a quick shake of the head. โ€œItโ€™s a long story.โ€

โ€œWhich is your way of saying donโ€™t pry.โ€

She stretched out her arms. โ€œItโ€™s my way of saying that weโ€™ve had a pleasant conversation, and bringing up my recent move will change all that. Iโ€™d just as soon keep this light.โ€

Wade wasnโ€™t expecting her reply. โ€œNow youโ€™ve piqued my interest.โ€

โ€œAnother time,โ€ she said.

He offered a smile that usually had women crawling all over him. โ€œAm I going to have that chance?โ€

โ€œChance for what?โ€

โ€œAnother conversation.โ€

Her eyes bored into him as if he wasnโ€™t the sharpest tool in the shed. โ€œI told you, Iโ€™m not interested.โ€

He lifted one eyebrow, flashed a dimple. โ€œWhat if I told you I was rich?โ€

She burst out in laughter.

His smile fell.

โ€œSorryโ€ฆโ€ She appeared to pull in her mirth. โ€œYouโ€™re gonna have to do better than money.โ€

โ€œGood lord, woman.โ€

โ€œSorry.โ€

He scratched his head. โ€œIโ€™m famous.โ€

She bit her lip. โ€œThat explains the arrogance.โ€

Wade placed a hand on his wounded chest. โ€œI am not.โ€

Trina tossed her head back, and her deep laugh filled the empty lobby. โ€œMy name is Wade Thomas, you donโ€™t know who I am?โ€ Her mimicry of him was off by several octaves.

Her laughter tickled his gut.

โ€œI can teach you the two-step.โ€

She pinched her lips together, trying to contain herself.

His pride was starting to dim.

โ€œIโ€™m not bad looking.โ€

She looked him up and down โ€ฆ twice. โ€œIโ€™ll give you that.โ€

He lifted both hands in the air. โ€œFinally.โ€

For the span of a full minute, she stared. Her smile slowly started to fall, and he knew she was talking herself out of dating him.

โ€œTell you what. Iโ€™m flying home tomorrow. Private charter, because Iโ€™m rich, famous, and arrogant.โ€ He moaned on that last word.

โ€œAnd good-looking.โ€

Now they were getting somewhere.

โ€œI can give you a lift home.โ€

Trina blew out a breath. โ€œIโ€™m avoiding going home,โ€ she reminded him.

โ€œAnd I was thinking I needed a quick stop in Nassau โ€ฆ where the plane might not be able to leave right away. That tropical depressed storm and all.โ€

She pointed a finger in his direction. โ€œI like the way you think.โ€
