Witches Business series

by Kelly D. Smith

Alyssa doesn’t like to ask for help, but when fighting zombies, sometimes a witch needs a little backup. So she summons a demon. Falan Farrelly, demon. Alyssa wouldn’t have survived the night without him, but is that the only reason she wants to summon him again?Β

Falan isn’t used to chasing imps out of old lady’s yards or getting rid of demons, but there is something about this witch that makes him unable to resist.

At about 20 pages, Smith’s story is a fun introduction to a new world – kinda like a light appetizer to tempt you to order something more.Β  Because it isn’t very long, there isn’t a lot to it but I liked what was there.

The first meeting between Alyssa and Falan is entertaining and I’m intrigued by the little other-worldly tidbits that Smith lets peek thru.Β  I definitely looking forwardΒ to seeing what comes next for them and the supernatural beings they encounter.

While the story is complete, it isn’t long.Β  But it is perfect as an introduction to characters, how they meet & get involved, what they face on a daily basis and the world they inhabit, while creating a need for more in the series πŸ™‚

We’ve seen the In the Line of Duty series before with His Best Friend’s Girl,Β His Moment to Steal,Β His Taste of Temptation, andΒ His Trouble in Tallulah. Β This is definitely one of those seriesΒ where I pick up a new book without caring what its about because I know I will love it!

As time runs short before Kyle ships out again, the desire Kyle and Rachel have suppressed breaks free in a fiery rush. Tempting her to reveal a secret that could give him a reason to stayβ€”or burn their love to ash.

Review:

I can’t say enough about this series.Β  The characters are always interesting, the bedroom door is wide open &Β HOT,Β and the plot is well paced & interesting.Β  Fox’s men are all strong, stand up guys – with good hearts, hard bodies and strong minds.Β  They are smart, sexy and dedicated to each other, their loved ones and what they feel is right.

And of course Kyle isn’t any different.Β  He’s sacrificed a lot for his brother, including the woman he loved.Β  Now that his brother is gone, it’s becomeΒ harder to resist her. Β Or her daughter.

Rachel is hiding a big secret from Kyle (although I’m pleased that Fox made it a recent secret, because I don’t[ know that I would have liked her as much if it had been known all along).Β  She’s always had feelings for him and now that he’s back in her life, she’s afraid that it might send him running.

I loved seeing the two of them get close again after so many years apart. Β The have long-held feelings that need to be brought out into the open but both are afraid of what it could mean – Rachel thinks it couldΒ be too much for himΒ and he’s carrying guilt overΒ his brother. Β It’s all so complicated but addressed very nicely and without being overly emotional.

My only issue, and I’ve said this before, is thatΒ I’m a little icked out by the idea of brothers being with the same girl.Β  I’m an only child so I don’t know if having siblingsΒ would change anything but to me it’s just … well, weird to think about.Β  I mean there’s just something about both of you having been naked with the same woman that just asks for comparison and … ugh, I don’t know it’s just strange to me.Β  But that’s a personal issue and I think Fox handles it very well. Β I just kinda blocked that part out and enjoyed the rest of it since I know it is just a hangup of mine and not necessarily a problem for everyone πŸ™‚

Fantastic heroes, strong women who love them, and romantic complications without a whole lot of drama add up toΒ fantastic books that I just have a hard time putting down.

3 Wishes, A Candy Hearts Romance, Book Review, Doreen Alsen, Nancy Fraser, Only Yours, Ooh La La, Peggy Jaeger

We’re starting off Valentine’s Day with reviews of 3 novellas that are perfect for a little treat on this day full of pink and flowers and chocolate candies … and of course love.

A Candy Hearts Romance

by Nancy Fraser

Everyone expects Rebecca Winston to marry her high school/college sweetheart, Garrett Langley. The problem is, the flame’s gone out on their romance. They’re still best of friends, but only friends. When Garrett’s father has a heart attack, his older brother Wyatt (an L.A. attorney) returns home for the first time in years. The attraction between Rebecca and Wyatt is immediate.

Can Rebecca expect her family and, especially, Garrett to understand that her desires have changed and turned toward Wyatt?

Can Wyatt get past the feeling that he’s poaching his younger brother’s girl?

This is a cute little story set in the 60s, which made me a little nostalgic (not that I lived it but in a watching Grease on TV kind of way).Β  It makes sense then why Rebecca would be struggling with other’s expectations – she lives at home with her parents and is still dating a guy even though the spark is gone.Β  Meeting his brother again helps to emphasize it when the sparks between them fly.Β  They both struggle with how their feelings might affect Garrett, but they aren’t willing to let something go on that is no longer right or pass on something that could be great.

I think this could have gone a very uncomfortable way but I love the Fraser handles it without too much drama between the characters.Β  Instead it is sweet and homey and with a great HEA.

A Candy Hearts Romance

by Peggy Jaeger

Valentine’s Day is chocolatier Chloe San Valentino’s favorite day of the year. Not only is it the busiest day in her candy shop, Caramelle de Chloe, but it’s also her birthday. Chloe’s got a birthday wish list for the perfect man she pulls out every year: he’d fall in love with her in a heartbeat, he’d be someone who cares about people, and he’d have one blue eye and one green eye, just like her. So far, Chloe’s fantasy man hasn’t materialized, despite the matchmaking efforts of her big, close-knit Italian family. But this year for her big 3-0 birthday, she just might get her three wishes.

Just as sweet as the chocolates that Chloe makes, I love this little story of love at first sight.Β  You are there for the meet-cute and then the bumpy road as they move to a happy ending.Β  I was rooting for Chloe and her fantasy man every step of the way.Β  The misunderstanding between them could have been easily resolved with just a simple question or two but it would have meant that we didn’t get the fun of the story – one that had me smiling from start to finish.

A Candy Hearts Romance

by Doreen Alsen

Aspiring choreographer and dance teacher, Simon West is walking along the hall in the college where he teaches when he gets knocked over by klutzy, two left feet, accounting professor Veronica Cooke. Simon wants to get to know the beautiful woman who ran him down, but how will she react when she finds out his alter-ego is a super sexy cowboy at an upscale exotic dancing male revue and that he makes ends meet by taking off his clothes?

I’m not sure if it really would have been that easy to keep Simon’s secret and the ending may have been a little to convenient, but I didn’t mind because the story was spicy and engaging.Β  Super sexy but it didn’t scrimp on heart.Β  Because of the size, it was basically love at first sight but it was downright fun so who cares.Β  Simon and Veronica and cute together and I love how they connected quickly, finding a way to build on that.

into the fireInto the Fire

The Texan Quartet series

by Claire Boston

Excerpt:

Piper Atkinson uses the truth as a weapon, but her latest interview candidate is more than just a headline.

Piper wants to be the kind of journalist who makes people sit up and take notice of the issues, and in Houston, Texas, there are plenty to go around. In the city’s high-end restaurant world, reclusive Native American chef Taima Woods is discussed in reverential whispers, so when the opportunity to interview him arrives, Piper jumps at it.

But getting to Tai is tougher than she expected. He has a deep mistrust of reporters, and a private life he’d prefer to keep hidden. There are two passions in Tai’s life – his cooking and his tribe – and he means to keep it that way. But the closer Tai gets to Piper, the closer he comes to conceding a third.

Through Tai, Piper discovers a world she knew nothing about – a damaged and ostracized community in need of a voice. But the more Piper wants to help them, the more Tai understands that to love Piper is to turn his back on his people.

Will Tai reject the one woman who’s ever understood him? Or can Piper show him that hardening his heart helps no one?

Excerpt:

Chapter 1

The bar was one of those hip places where the design was minimal and the prices were maximal. The tables were small to encourage intimate groups and conversations. Piper Atkinson scanned the faces in the dim lighting, hoping to catch sight of her friend, George. Stagehands were checking the microphone and equipment up front. George would be somewhere nearby, perhaps giving his client Adahy some last-minute words of encouragement.

Piper hadn’t heard the singer yet, but Adahy had played at her friend Elle’s cafΓ© and she’d said he was fabulous. A fusion of modern music with Native American beats.

Close to the stage there was an empty table with a reserved sign on it. It was probably reserved for George.

She ordered a drink and something to eat, and stood at the bar, waiting.

β€œIs your daddy a baker? Because you’ve got a nice set of buns!” a deep male voice behind her said.

Piper rolled her eyes and debated whether to ignore the pickup line or tell the guy off, when someone grabbed her butt. She whirled and slapped at the hand. β€œWhat the hell are you doing?”

The man who’d both groped her and tried the cheesy pickup line was tall and built like a linebacker. His muscles bulged out of his too-small shirt and the glaze in his eyes told her he’d been in the bar a while.

β€œJust checking out how fresh they are.”

β€œTake a hike,” she said.

Before he could respond, there was a tap-tap on the microphone. They both turned to the stage where one of the staff stood. He cleared his throat. β€œLet me introduce you to tonight’s entertainment. He’s a born and bred Texan – Adahy Woods.”

A young man in his mid twenties walked on to the stage. He had short, dark hair and was wearing jeans and a T-shirt.

β€œHe’s a damn Indian,” the linebacker said. β€œDidn’t think they’d let that sort in a place like this.”

Luckily his comments were drowned out by the applause. Disgusted, Piper grabbed her drink and moved away.

There were now two people seated at the reserved table and one of them was George. She wandered over, and George looked up and smiled. The other man didn’t notice her.

β€œHi, George, mind if I join you?” Piper asked.

β€œSure, we’ve got an extra seat.” George indicated one of the chairs and she put her drink on the table and pulled it out.

As she sat, the other man tore his attention away from the stage to look at her.

His gaze was intense. Chocolate brown eyes, glaring in annoyance at the interruption, chiseled features and loose, wavy, shoulder-length brown hair. Piper’s whole body flushed warmly, and there was a delicious shiver down her spine.

β€œTai Woods, this is Piper Atkinson, she’s a friend and a reporter for the Houston Age.” George turned to Piper. β€œTaima is Adahy’s brother.”

The name sparked something in Piper’s memory. She’d just read it at work. β€œThe chef of The Wooden Spoon.”

Tai looked surprised but nodded once before turning his attention back to his brother.

Piper’s editor had assigned her to do a set of profiles on people of Houston. Taima Woods was the one person on her list of interviewees she actually wanted to interview, but the reclusive chef famously didn’t talk to the media. This was a great opportunity to break the ice.

β€œHe sounds great,” Piper said to George, and nodded toward Adahy.

β€œHe does. We’re going to release a single next month.”

The waitress delivered Piper’s order of nachos to the table.

β€œHelp yourself,” she invited the others.

Tai frowned at her. He was obviously there for the music and not the company.

Pity even his dirty look made Piper shiver. What was wrong with her? She’d dated plenty of men, but none had given her this kind of frisson, especially not a man who was completely uninterested in her.

Still, if she was going to be interviewing him, she didn’t want to get him off side. She shut up, ate her nachos and listened to Adahy sing.

He was amazing. His tone was warm and the way he mixed Native American drums and pipes with modern pop/rock music gave it an edge, a difference that was refreshing.

Piper found herself tapping her foot to the music and when he finished his set, she added her voice to the shouts of approval coming from the crowd.

George got to his feet. β€œI’ll be back in a minute.” He headed to meet Adahy.

The applause died down and was replaced by voices.

β€œOh my God. He’s so hot. I can’t wait to hear more of his songs,” said a woman who was sitting at the table next to theirs.

β€œSounds like he was a success,” Piper commented.

Tai grunted non-committedly.

β€œYou must be proud of him,” she tried.

β€œAda’s achievements are his own.” Tai scanned the crowd.

Wow. This guy really didn’t do small talk.

Interviewing him was going to be a whole lot of fun.

She wondered whether the paper had contacted him about the special feature yet. The woman she’d phoned this evening had been expecting the call. She guessed Tai wouldn’t be.

As she was about to broach the subject, he pushed back his chair and left, walking toward Adahy and George, who were standing next to the stage.

No. Social skills really weren’t his forte.

Tai said something to his brother, gave him a hug and then wove his way through the crowd and out of the bar.

Piper sat there, unsure whether to be amused or offended by the man’s lack of manners. She decided on amused and made a mental note to ask her editor, Geraldine, why Tai was on the interview list.

George brought Adahy over to the table and introduced them.

β€œThat was a fantastic set,” Piper told him. β€œLet me know when you next play and I’ll tell our music reporter.”

β€œGreat idea,” George told her and grinned. β€œI’m getting drinks, do you want one?”

β€œYes, please.” She wasn’t in any rush to get home and tomorrow was miraculously free, with no interviews booked or events she had to attend.

Adahy took the seat next to her and sighed in satisfaction. β€œThat was fun.”

Fun.

When had Piper last thought her work was fun? She couldn’t remember associating that descriptor with her job at all. Even the usual positive fallbacks interesting, fulfilling and educational couldn’t be used to describe the last few months in her new position. β€œYou looked like you were enjoying yourself,” she said.

He nodded. β€œYou work for a paper?”

β€œThe Houston Age,” she told him. β€œI was hoping to talk to your brother about a series we’ve got coming up, but he left before I could.”

Adahy laughed. β€œGood luck with that. Tai’s not one for talk.”

β€œI noticed,” Piper said.

He laughed again.

George returned with the drinks and handed them out. β€œWhat brings you out tonight, Piper? No one to interrogate?”

β€œNot tonight. I felt like going out and Elle said you’d be here.” She’d tried all of her friends – Libby, Imogen and Elle – but none of them had been available. Elle had suggested Piper meet her fiancΓ©, George, at the bar.

β€œWe haven’t seen you much lately,” George said.

Piper felt a twinge of guilt. β€œI’m sorry I wasn’t there to help clean up after the break in at Elle’s cafΓ©.” Elle’s ex had trashed the place in a fit of jealousy.

β€œWe had plenty of hands,” George said. β€œBesides, the piece your reporter buddy did when Elle reopened the cafΓ© got so many people interested that she’s constantly busy. She’s pretty happy.”

β€œI’m glad.” Piper had called in a favor and asked the social pages reporter to attend Elle’s bookshop cafΓ© reopening. The guy had been so impressed by the set up he’d done more than a little paragraph – he had requested his editor make it the spotlight of the week.

George turned to Adahy to discuss the performance. Piper found it fascinating to listen to people talking about subjects she knew little about. Here it was all about the music – pitch and tone, notes and keys – as well as the performance itself.

Some of George’s suggestions were good and made Piper review the set in a whole other light. It wasn’t just about singing and playing: it was about entertainment. She’d like to interview George about his work, but she’d never be allowed to because the music reporter guarded her turf.

Still, she’d chat to George about it some day when they were both free.

Piper stifled a yawn and checked the time. If she wanted to do anything constructive tomorrow – and she had to do more research on those profiles – she should go to bed. She got to her feet, said goodbye and headed home.

On the way out she caught herself looking for Tai, wondering if he had indeed gone or was waiting for her to leave.

Annoyed he was on her mind when he’d not paid her the slightest bit of regard, she reminded herself it was a purely professional curiosity. She had to interview him.

She ignored the fact her body didn’t usually respond like that to people she interviewed.

It was nothing to worry about.

*****

Review:

Tai was introduced in Under the Covers (George’s story) and I knew that I wanted to find out his story, but at the same time I was afraid that he’d be too militant about his tribe.Β  I shouldn’t have doubted Boston.Β  She does a great job of showing his dedication to his people and detailing their struggles.Β  You feel for everything they’ve been thru and can understand why they might be a little hesitant to trust outsiders.Β  And that commitment sets up the conflict, and resolution, well.

Piper is going thru a little personal life crisis – she had an idea of what she wanted to do with her life and unfortunately things aren’t going the way she expects.Β  Throw in a new romance and she could easily have been overwhelmed but I really like how she faces it all head on.Β  She’s a great match for strong, sensitive Tai.

I have really enjoyed Boston’s Texan Quartet (although I missed Book 2, not sure how :)) – every time she gives her readers fantastic, individual characters with realistic issues. Β (As with the other stories, this can easilyΒ stand on its own – returning readers will enjoy seeing their favorite characters again, but new readers won’t have trouble keeping up.)

Review:

I’ll be honest, I thought this was a romance but that’s not really what I got. Β Instead we experience Joanna’s journey – from having to sit next to gruff Connor on the plane, to their time on the island, and then, once they are rescued, how she has to find her regular life again.Β  Every time she turns around she’s experiencing something new and challenging, so she has to figure out whether she’s strong enough to conquer it.

As much as I liked this book, which I did, I found myself wishing for more – more of what had to be great moments on the island and more romance (I was disappointed that Connor was missing for at least 50% of the story). Β Probably because I was expecting a romance πŸ™‚ Β But as a women’s fiction piece – a chance to see Joanna grow and change thanks to her experiences – it was very enjoyable. Β And I just know that with the right mindset it would have been even more so.

by Aria Glazki

Genre: Adult Contemporary Romance (Sweet heat level)

Cover Designer: Christa Holland at Paper & Sage

Release Date: February 9, 2016

Hosted by: Book Partners In Crime Promotions

Blurb:

Kane’s a country singer who’s tangled with too many deceitful women. He’s learned his lesson: girls are for flirting and fun; emotions are for his music. But after spending a night with an earnest woman unlike any he’s known, he can’t force her out of his mind. So he goes in search of the woman he knows only as β€œElle.”

On her last night in Nashville, the staunchly pragmatic Sabella found herself in a situation more suited to a romance novel than reality. Swept away, she ignored her rigidly self-imposed rules, succumbing to the fantasy just this once. But she knows real-world relationships have nothing in common with their fictionalized portrayals. When Kane unexpectedly shows up at her Portland apartment, she must choose between the practical truths she has learned and the desire for a passionate love she has struggled to suppress.

Despite the distance, Kane’s tour schedule, and their meddling friends, both are drawn to the chance for a romance neither quite believes is possible.

Excerpt:

β€œSo how did you know I was from out of town?” She hadn’t thought she stood out quite so blatantly, and there were plenty of people in Nashville without Southern accents, so that couldn’t have given her away.

β€œYou don’t act like a local girl,” he answered, relaxing back into the couch. His hands rested gently on his thighs, and he sat with his ankles crossed. He looked so perfectly comfortable that she felt even more self-conscious, standing in the middle of the room, thumbs tucked into the pockets of her jeans.

β€œAnd how do local girls act?” she asked curiously, shifting her weight to one hip to appear more relaxed.

β€œConfident. Assertive. They know exactly what they bring to the table, and exactly what they want to take away.” He paused. She felt herself swallow but continued to watch him. β€œBut they rarely take any real risks,” he finished.

Kane stood and stepped forward, which brought him a touch closer to her than would have been casual. Sabella could see the stubble beginning to grow over his angled jaw and slightly rounded chin, his hair brushing over the tops of his ears and down to the back of his shirt collar, the thin scar that angled from right above his lip toward his left cheek, and the slightly flattened line of his nose that told her it had been broken at least once. He smelled faintly of wood with an overlay of beer, a combination she never would have imagined to be alluring.

She shifted moderately closer to him. If his assessment of these women was accurate, she definitely had little in common with them. Maybe it was her natural curiosity, but she almost never knew well enough to avoid taking risks, though she relentlessly attempted to impose sensible limitations on herself. Clearly that wasn’t working so well tonight.

Over a foot remained between them, yet their stance felt oddly intimate. Until the door was opened by an older woman in a jean skirt, black halter top, and well-worn leather boots.

Sabella took a hasty step back, but the woman was looking at Kane. He hadn’t reacted as sharply as she had, but rather did a slow half turn toward the door.

β€œAmber Lynn,” he said by way of greeting and smiled somewhat crookedly.

β€œKane,” she responded, with a voice so husky she must have spent years shouting to be heard. β€œNot your best night,” she said casually then turned toward Sabella. β€œNow you must be why the boys keep on askin’ me for a karaoke night.” Her eyes took in Sabella’s silky purple top, manicured hands, casual sandals, and loosely waved hair, which didn’t accurately reflect the fact that it had taken almost an hour to style. She took her time, as if her eyes moved through the same honey that dripped from her voiceβ€”though that’s how Sabella thought of most country accents she had heard in her brief time in Nashville.

β€œAmber Lynn here’s the owner of the Fiddle an’ Steel,” Kane explained. His drawl was actually not as thick, with only a hint of flattened vowels and that light softening to some of his consonants.

β€œPleasure to meet you,” Sabella offered politely.

β€œWelcome to Nashville,” Amber Lynn replied. β€œWhat’re you hidin’ in here for? A lotta them boys would sure love to get to know ya better after that little show y’all put on.” The last few words were directed at Kane. Amber Lynn narrowed her eyes a bit and pursed her lips, as if trying to discern Kane’s motives.

β€œGive ’er a chance to recover, Amber Lynn.” Kane’s innocent smile never wavered.

Amber Lynn considered him for a moment, glanced again at Sabella, and turned back toward the door. β€œBehave yourself, boy,” she threw over her shoulder as she walked out.

β€œYou know me!” he called after her, grinning. β€œSo.” He turned back to Sabella, and his mouth settled into a half smile. β€œCan I buy you a drink?”

Review:

I think the main things I like so much about this one is that there aren’tΒ TOO many misunderstandings or drama. Β There areΒ a couple of places where their hangups got the better of them but they areΒ handled realistically and well. Β I saw a lot of places where Glazki could have created even more trouble for Kane and Sabella but instead it is a sweet piece about people trying to get to know each other, fall in love and find a way to be together.

There’s also a good opportunity for more great stories with Kane’s bandmates (& Ella’s friend) and I’m looking forward to them getting their own HEA. Β I really like seeing the friendship that had developed between the three guys and a glimpse at how they are together on the stage & on the road.

Sometimes you are in the mood for a lot of turmoil and sometimes you are in the mood for something a little more relaxed – this definitely falls into that second category. Β The characters are down to earth, with real life (well, as real life as you can get when one of you is a recording artist) issues and interactions. Β You can totally put yourself in their shoes.

Author Info:

Aria’s writing story started when her seventh-grade English teacher encouraged her to submit a class assignment for publication. That piece was printed, and let’s just say, she was hooked!

Since then, Aria has run a literary magazine, earned her degree in Creative Writing (as well as in French and Russian literatures), and been published here and there. Though her first kiss technically came from a bear cub, and no fairytale transformation followed, Aria still believes magic can happen when the right people come togetherβ€”if they don’t get in their own way, that is.
Other than all things literary, Aria loves spending time with her family, including her two unbearably adorable nieces. She also dabbles in painting, dancing, playing violin, and, given the opportunity, Epicureanism.

Axle Alley Vipers series

by Sherilee Gray

Piper West is finally on her own, and it’s time to get crazy. Except that her overprotective big bro has enlisted his ex-cop best friend to keep an eye on his baby sister. With every move monitored and reported back, Piper’s life has gone from β€œgoing crazy” to β€œbeing driven crazy.” But a searing-hot kiss with her sexy and scarred watchdog is just the game-changer she needs…

Cole Black owes Piper’s brother big-time, but there’s nothing easy about his new assignment. Piper is all feisty sexiness and curves meant to tempt a man beyond reason, and Cole can’t stop himself. Now he’s caught up in a hunger like nothing he’s ever known, and he can’t get enough…

Even if Piper’s the one girl he’s not allowed to have.

I love Piper and Cole together.Β  The sibling’s best friend trope is one of my favorites because there is usually such history already between the hero and heroine, adding an additional depth to their relationship.Β  Here, Piper has loved Cole forever and he feels something similar but, besides her being his best friend’s sister, he wants to feel worthy of her.Β  Unfortunately a horrible accident has left him scarred inside and out.Β  I can understand where he is coming from and Gray does a good job of keeping it from being too β€œoh-woe-is-me”.Β  He’s not pitiful, he’s troubled – still a good man underneath, just fighting a few demons.

Piper wasΒ starting to give up on Cole ever having feelings for her, but once she realizes that maybe there is more than brotherly affection on his sideΒ she decides to put everything out there toΒ win the man she’s loved for so long.Β  She doesn’t care about the scars on his body, she’s determined to win his heart. Β Piper is a ton of fun once she puts her mind to getting to Cole, making me smile more than once and leaving me feeling sorry for the poor man.

Sassy, funny and full of heart, Wrecked is a fabulously good time.Β  BTW, I’ve not read anything else in this series and I don’t think that it made a difference.Β  There are a couple of small references I don’t totally understand, but overall it is minor and I think this story can easily stand on its own.Β  So if this is your first too, don’t hesitate to pick it up.

Hawthorne Witches

by Savannah Hill

Blurb:

Β

Darkly erotic. SupremelyΒ powerful.Haley Hawthorne is a witch. She shuns her paranormal gifts, instead escapingΒ into a mundane, reclusive life as an accountant for her Uncle Eli’s firm. FiveΒ years earlier, Haley was kidnapped by Raden, brother of Lucifer, and heldΒ captive as his personal sex slave. She escaped but still bears the scars, bothΒ physical and emotional. Now she’s turned away from both magic and sex, andΒ she’s certain nothing will ever bring those lost things back into her life…

Damian, son to Lucifer, has renounced his right to the throne of Hell and hasΒ become a soldier for Adversus, hunting evil supernatural creatures on Earth.Β Unfortunately, he’s powerless to witches, and this witch can read his mind. HeΒ can’t decide what is more dangerousβ€”the irresistible attraction he feels forΒ her, or the intoxicating peace she gives him. One thing is certain, they bothΒ share a tortured past.

After Damian rescues her from an attack by monstrous djinn, Haley discovers theΒ dangerously seductive soldier has secrets of his own. One of them is theΒ collection of whips, ropes, handcuffs, and a leather riding crops he keepsΒ locked away, though he refuses to show her his β€œMaster” side. But when herΒ trust in him grows, she finds herself increasingly intrigued by all the kinkyΒ things he’s hiding. But Damian has been given a new mission to kill a monster.Β A monster that turns out to be her uncle…Β

Excerpt:
Β

Her fingers movedΒ automatically, stumbling only slightly over the same heavy melodies she’d onceΒ played obsessively for hours. The bedroom door opened, and Damian walked intoΒ the room, breaking her reverie.

β€œOh, hi.” HeΒ stared at her in surprise, holding a towel low around his waist, and HaleyΒ caught herself gaping at the defined muscles of his upper body, adorned withΒ scars. β€œI didn’t know you were in here, I’m just gonna grab some clothes.”

His half nakedΒ body had her heart beating erratically in her chest, and Haley tried not toΒ look at him as he pulled open a dresser drawer. She suddenly realized he wasΒ reaching for his own clothes. β€œIs…is this your room?”

β€œYeah.” HeΒ retrieved a stack of folded clothes from the drawer. β€œYou can stay in hereΒ though, I’ll sleep somewhere else.”

β€œI’m so sor—” Haley abruptly stopped speaking as he casually took off the towel, and she letΒ out a barely audible gasp. Turning away from him, she brought her hand to coverΒ her eyes. β€œI’m…I can go…”

Her pulse raced atΒ the sound of rustling cotton as he dressed a few feet away from her.

β€œYou play guitar?”

β€œUh…no, notΒ really… I mean… I don’t play well.” She kept her eyes hidden from himΒ with one hand while she loosely held the neck of the guitar with the other,Β aware that her dress had hiked up around her hips in her cross-legged position.

β€œYou can lookΒ now.”

She opened herΒ eyes as he sat next to her, wearing a white T-shirt over gray sweatpants. β€œIΒ thought it sounded really good.”

Looking down atΒ the beautiful instrument in her lap, recognition sparked. β€œIs this yours?”

With a nod, he gotΒ up to pull her red guitar from the wall. β€œWhen did you learn how to play?”

β€œWhen I wasΒ younger,” she nervously held his shiny blue Les Paul, unsure where to put herΒ hands, β€œbut I got a little obsessed with it when I stayed in here for a fewΒ months.”

Damian sat downΒ with hers and started tuning it. β€œSo this is your room…” HeΒ concentrated on the strings in his hand. β€œAnd this is your guitar?β€Β β€œRed Velvet.” SheΒ nodded, trying to keep her breathing even.

β€œYou named yourΒ guitar?” He smiled at her.Β Haley relaxed aΒ little as he tuned the strings. β€œI was very close with it for a while.” SheΒ took a steadying breath. β€œIt kind of felt like therapy.”

β€œThat was afterΒ you escaped?”

β€œYes.” She loweredΒ her gaze.

β€œI actually tookΒ this room because it had an amp in it.” Damian mindlessly played a slow melodyΒ on her guitar.

β€œWhen did youΒ start playing?” The sound sent a tingling warmth through her, and she foundΒ herself staring at his fingers as they expertly moved along the strings.

β€œWhen I was a kid.Β It came naturally to me.”

Her focus dimmedΒ at the powerful chords. β€œSo…you were a kid…at one time…”

He nodded. β€œI’veΒ aged normally so far, like a human, but eventually I’ll stop aging.”

β€œHow old are you?”

β€œThirty-two.” HeΒ cast his gaze downward.Β Haley lookedΒ thoughtfully at the bedspread, listening to the haunting music. β€œI’mΒ twenty-seven.”

She volunteeredΒ the information. β€œI feel like I’m eighty, I never go out anywhere.” Her gazeΒ flickered to him. β€œAre you really only thirty-two?”

He seemedΒ surprised by her remark and looked back down to the strings. β€œIt’s a lot olderΒ than you.”

β€œYou’re immortal.” She gave him a half-smile. β€œYou could be thousands of years old.”

Review:

I still read the occasional paranormal romance but it’s definitely not my main genre right now so I’m not sure what all is out there. Β Which means I’m not the best to say how original this world is :), but I think that Hill does a great job of creating one that is interesting.Β  It’s got just the right touch of real world to make you think that it could be happening around you but yetΒ be full of witches, demons, monsters and supernatural soldiers.

Haley went through something horrible and I’m impressed by how well she’s recovered.Β  She’s still not completely healed and hesitates to get intimate with any man, especially the nephew of the man who held her captive (and someone who saw her in that situation).Β  But being able to see into Damian’s mind helps I think.Β  She starts to understand him a little better and see past who he used to be.

Damian may be the son of Satan but he is now working for the other side, fighting demons and monsters.Β  Working with her brothers introduces him to Haley and spending time with the sexy witch draws him in.Β  But can he breach the walls that her time in Hell built … and what happens when he’s ordered to kill her uncle?

I love the relationship and trust that builds between these two.Β  They each have reasons to be wary of the other but time (and the glimpses they get of each other’s thoughts) start to forge something sweet.Β  Damian is amazingly patient and understanding of all of Haley’s hangups.Β  And she’s definitely strong, she just has to remember that.Β  There’s danger mixed in with the love story, as expected with most paranormal romances, and it adds that extra oomph to the book.

Because it is the first in the series, there is a lot of extra explanation that has to happen, but I don’t feel like it bogged things down.Β  I do, though, think there were times where it might have been missing some of the history related to this story.Β  I’m not sure if that was intentional or not, because they weren’t big things but just enough that I wanted a little more info.Β  I’m curious to see where Hill goes from here and whether we get some of those answers when the rest of the Hawthornes gets their stories.

Amelia Parker has booked a two-week vacation to Maui to surprise her boyfriend on their second anniversary. She works as a concierge in a boutique hotel in Manhattan. Her boss demands she cancels her vacation because her back-up has quit, leaving him without coverage for a major convention. Amelia won’t be able to get her money back and her boss won’t reimburse her. When she stands firm about still going on the vacation she booked a year ago, she gets fired. Amelia goes back home to her boyfriend’s apartment that she shares with him. She catches him in bed with the barista of her favorite coffee shop.

Amelia is out of a job

Out of an apartment

Out of a relationship

And shit out of coffee

When Amelia arrives in Maui, newly single and unemployed, she’s shocked to discover the resort she booked is actually a ramshackle little beachside hotel. At least the scenery is easy on the eyesβ€”as is the toned, laid-back snorkel instructor, β€œDude.” After two weeks of sun, serenity, and mind-blowing sex, she even accepts a job as the hotel’s concierge. But what Amelia really wants is to relaunch the place completely. And that means convincing the absentee Wall Street billionaire owner, Samuel Kincaide, to take a chance on her.

Samuel has a plan, too: selling off every last reminder of his former life and chilling all day, every day as his slacker alter ego . . . Dude. He loves his romps in the ocean, and under the sheets, with the feisty Amelia. If she discovers his true identity, her boundless enthusiasm and innovative business plan will seriously diminish his hammock time. But when Amelia runs into real trouble on the island, he’ll put everything on the line to keep her safe. He just hopes that the woman who’s falling for Dude will feel the same about Samuel.

β€œI can’t remember the last book that made me smile this much. Jamie Schmidt is ridiculously talentedβ€”she does fun and flirty every bit as well as she does hot and sexy, with just right amount of emotional punch.”—USA Today bestselling author Lauren Layne

Excerpt:

This couldn’t be happening to her. When she’d seen the ad for the all-inclusive resort in Hawaii last year, it had been like a dream come true. Fishing around under her desk, Amelia pulled out the brochure. It was creased and wrinkled from her having looked at it a million times. The hotel was shaped like a horseshoe around a gigantic pool and tiki bar. The beach in the distance showed cerulean blue waves with just a hint of whitecaps. She wanted to be on that beach so much, her teeth ached.

β€œCan you have this dry-cleaned?” A guest shoved a large plastic bag over the counter, knocking over her pirate’s chest of wrapped candy.

β€œSure,” Amelia said, taking the bag. Once she got the guest’s room number and laundry preferences, she tagged the bag and called in a pickup at one of the local laundries. Then she booked a few more theater and dinner reservations and gave out some walking maps of the city. By the time she got back to her brochure, it was around three in the afternoon.

β€œNine a.m. island time,” she said, dialing the resort’s number.

It rang and rang. No one picked up. No one picked up an hour later, either. Finally, around five o’clock her time, a groggy voice drawled into the phone.

β€œWhatchu want?”

β€œUm, is this the Palekaiko Beach Resort?”

β€œIt is, sistah,” the voice said in a warm, smiling voice that made her toes tingle. β€œWhat can I do for you?”

She could almost picture him leaning against a desk like hers. Only his view wasn’t icy sleet and gray drabness, but lush greens and ocean blue. Shaking herself back into the present, she said, β€œI need to change my reservation.”

β€œI’m sorry, but I don’t know where Hani is right now.”

β€œWho’s Hani?” she asked.

He yawned. β€œHe’s in charge of all that.”

β€œWho are you?”

β€œThey call me Dude.”

β€œSeriously?”

β€œYa, as in I’m the dude that teaches snorkeling. The phone was harshing my buzz, so I answered it.”

β€œIsn’t it before noon there?” Amelia was giddy at the thought of drinking before noon.

β€œIt’s five o’clock somewhere, sunshine.”

That it is. She scowled at the mermaid clock on the wall. β€œLook, do you know when Hani will be back?”

He sighed. β€œNo. In fact, I don’t see Kai or Makoa around either. Must’ve gone surfing.”

Amelia’s breath caught. β€œHow are the waves, there?”

β€œHere, we’ve got some storm surge but down the coast there’s some beach break.”

β€œAre they . . . gnarly?” Amelia tried out some slang.

His husky laugh sent a shiver up her spine. β€œYou should come see for yourself, sweet thing.”

There was one little problem with that. Her excitement deflated like a balloon, complete with the raspberry noise. β€œThat’s actually the reason why I’m calling. I need to switch dates on my reservation. I know it’s last-minute, but my boss canceled my vacation.”

β€œSounds like an asshole.”

Vindication surged through her and she looked quickly around, but the desk crew were the only ones around. β€œHe is,” she whispered. β€œHe wants me to move my two-week vacation to May.”

β€œAw, honey, I’m afraid we can’t do that.”

β€œWhy not? It’s all right if you have to charge me a fee.”

β€œNah, you don’t understand. We ain’t gonna be here in May.”

β€œWhat?” She heard a screeching sound in her head.

β€œThe big kahuna is selling and the new owners will tear it down to build condos.”

β€œOh, no!,” she said. β€œCan I get my money back?”

β€œWe can credit your card.”

β€œNo,” Amelia said. β€œI paid by check. Monthly. For over a year. I sent in the last payment a month ago.”

β€œHm,” he said. β€œWell, I’m sure something can be done. The kahuna is a big shot. If you write him a letter, he can fix you up.”

Amelia’s hand was shaking as she grabbed her pen. β€œWhat’s his name?”

β€œSamuel Kincaide.”

β€œI see.” She tried to keep the tears out of her voice.

β€œDon’t cry, wahine.”

She didn’t trust her voice. β€œI d-don’t want my money back. I want to go on my dream vacation.”

β€œThen come on.”

β€œI’ll get in trouble,” she said with a watery giggle.

β€œI get it,” Dude said. β€œBut your kahuna sounds like a grade-A prick.”

β€œSo does yours.”

He barked out a loud laugh. β€œI tell you whatβ€”you come on down and I’ll buy you a drink.”

She sniffled. β€œWhat’s the weather like down there?”

β€œIt’s a little chilly today. It’s about seventy-five.”

Amelia bit back a moan. Seventy-five! She had a cute little sundress all picked out that would be perfect with a little lacy shawl.

β€œBut that’s because of the wind. Once the wind dies down later this afternoon should be about ninety.”

This time she did let out a moan.

β€œWhere are you calling from?” he asked, his voice sounding like honey over gravel.

β€œManhattan.”

β€œSistah, get on the plane.” He chuckled. β€œThat’s a no-brainer.”

β€œWhat’s the worst he can do?” Amelia said, almost to herself.

β€œAre you a doctor?”

β€œDoctor?” She huffed in surprise. β€œNo, I’m a concierge.”

β€œSo no one’s life depends on you while you’re on vacation?”

β€œI don’t even have a cat.”

β€œIf he fires you, can you survive?”

Amelia thought about it. Jay might be pissed. Although, truth be told, he really didn’t care about stuff like that. That’s what she liked about him. There were no problems, no troubles. In fact, he had asked her to move in when she didn’t have a job, so it probably wouldn’t be that big a deal. If worse came to worst, they’d eat ramen noodles for a few months until she got into another hotel. They could rekindle their relationship over a shared misery and look over the pictures of their once-in-a-lifetime vacation.

β€œSistah, you still there?”

β€œUnfortunately.” She sighed.

β€œLook, you gotta do what you gotta do. I’ll make sure the kahuna gives you all your money back. He listens to me. You got no worries. You make sure you have no regrets.”

β€œThanks,” she said. While the phone was cradled between her neck and shoulders, she rubbed her arms to stave off the chill as she stared dejectedly out the window. The sleet just kept coming down in gray icy waves. β€œI really appreciate that.”

β€œI got to tell you, though, that I’ve got a bucket of Coronas just waitin’ to be shared. I’ll even throw in a free snorkel lesson. Come find me.”

β€œWhere are you going to be?” Her mouth curved into a smile.

β€œIn my hammock. Just ask for Dude.”

β€œDude?”

β€œYes, sweet thing?”

β€œI’ll see you tomorrow.”

β€œThat’s my girl.”

Amelia hung up and started shaking her head. Mr. Kensington would be disappointed, but he wouldn’t really fire her, right? She was the only experienced concierge he had, and she was a hard worker. She always picked up extra shifts and never complained. So he’d have to hire a temp, or get one of the desk staff to fill in for a few days. Most of them were native New Yorkers and could recommend restaurants. All of her contacts for shows and tours were on the computer. It was just customer service. She’d even stay extra late tonight to help train them. And she’d only be gone two weeks. It was only right that she took the vacation that had been booked and approved a year ago. She’d earned it. And she and Jay needed it. She couldn’t even remember the last time they’d had sex. Amelia needed to put her relationship first. Straightening her shoulders, she marched into Kensington’s office to tell him the bad news.

Amelia trudged to the bus stop with all of her personal belongings in a large plastic garbage bag. She no longer cared about avoiding icy puddles, because she was already soaked through.

By the time she got off at her stop, Zarafina was long gone, and the cafΓ© where Quinn worked was closed. Too badβ€”she could have used another shot of caffeine. It felt like it was taking an eternity to get to her apartment. All she wanted was a nice hot shower and to put on soft wool socks. She’d tell Jay about losing her job after Maui. No sense ruining his fun. And if she started to stress, she’d just order more rum drinks. She deserved this vacation.

β€œI can’t believe that rat fink Kensington fired me,.” she told her reflection in the elevator.

Opening the door to her apartment, she dumped her belongings on the floor. Crap, she thoughtβ€”she’d forgotten to pick up dinner. When she didn’t bring home dinner, Jay got cranky. Oh, well, they’d have to get delivery tonight. Thai sounded good. Or maybe a nice hot steaming bowl of pho? Squishing toward the bedroom, she heard loud moaning sounds.

β€œYes, yes, yes!”

Great. Jay’s watching porn in surround sound again.

Shaking her head, she pushed open the bedroom door. Whatever witty remark she had prepared died when she realized it was live action instead of Internet porn.

Quinn in all her naked glory was bouncing on top of Jay, whose fingers were biting into Quinn’s butt so hard, he was going to leave marks.

Amelia’s feet were frozen in place. She opened her mouth to speak, but nothing came out. Tears pricked at the corners of her eyes, but as she helplessly watched Quinn working toward orgasm, she wasn’t surprised.

Hurt. Betrayed. Pissed. But not surprised.

Is it wrong that I’m madder about losing my morning coffee?

Quinn’s head tilted back as she spewed a litany of swear words. Jay lay flat on his back with his eyes closed and let her do all the work.

Typical.

It was then she realized that her relationship had problems that even Maui couldn’t solve. She didn’t love Jay; otherwise she’d be more upset. He didn’t love her; otherwise he wouldn’t be banging the barista.

β€œYou’re going to put somebody’s eye out with those,” Amelia said, finding her voice as Quinn’s big breasts heaved up and down.

Quinn shrieked and tried to cover up.

Jay pushed her over and sat up. β€œBabe, you’re home early.”

Review:

While Life’s a Beach is an entertaining and quick (also HOT) read, there were portions that are a little farfetched. Β The trouble that comes up is that Samuel plans to sell the hotel but Amelia wants to do a makeover to turn it around.Β  Unfortunately the man that Samuel is trying to sell to is playing hardball toΒ get the price down.Β  While they wait for a better price Samuel agrees to let her do some things to spruce the place up, but mysterious, bad things start happening … and how they handle it just doesn’t ring real for me.

Having said that, the rest of the book makes up for it – the sex is very steamy, the characters are interesting, and the rest of the plot is highly entertaining.Β  There were times where I laughed out loud and times that I got a little hot under the collar :), which I consider a definite win!

Amelia is a ton of fun – she’s sassy, funny, strong and determined.Β  Samuel is sexy and when he forgets about being overly β€œDude-y” he’s fun to be around.Β  He’s got some issues that he needs to work through – some time to try to find a way to be both Dude and Samuel in a way that works.Β  I really loved his brother and the people at the resort, so I’m curious what future books in the series brings.

If you are looking for a great beach read in the middle of January, this is definitely worth a try!

Book Review, Lindsay Cross, Men of Mercy series, Ravaged River

A couple of months back we looked at this series when Raylan was released and I picked up the first book then because it was free. Β Unfortunately I didn’t ever get around to reading it … and now I’m regretting it. Β I really enjoyed the newest,Β Ravaged River, so my TBR list justΒ got 5Β books longer!

Men of Mercy 6

By Lindsay Cross

Genre: Military Romance

Blurb:

Special forces operative Hoyt Crowe wasn’t just damaged… he was broken. After suffering brutal torture in captivity, his once lively spirit is shattered. Now his greatest adversary isn’t some unknown terrorist in a foreign country, it’s himself.

Hayden James watched Hoyt slide into a private purgatory of post-traumatic stress disorder, taking her heart with him. No longer warm and loving, he is cold. Hardened. A shell of his former self.

When an old enemy threatens Hayden’s life, Hoyt must find the strength to slay his inner demons or lose the woman he loves forever.

Unhappy woman in focus crying and angry man leaving on the background after quarrel

Review:

Hoyt carries a lot of baggage from his captivity – scars that cut very, very deep and impact all facets of his life. Β Because of it, he’s turned away from Hayden and placed a strain on his relationships with his brother & teammates.Β  As a member of an elite special forces team, it is extra hard to face what he feels is his weakness.Β  But when an old enemy brings danger to his door, he has to decide if he’s man enough to face his demons and conquer them. Β He’s deeply troubled but also a good man, who just needs to find his way to get past his anger and pain.

I don’t know if it is because she is too close to him, but I would think that as a psychology grad student Hayden would have a little more understanding of what Hoyt is going through.Β  She’s understandably hurt by hisΒ leavingΒ but she has to know that there is more going on than what is on the surface.Β  Once she does start looking at things a little more objectively though she gets it.Β  But then the bad guys arrive and things get crazy.

I kinda wish there had been more time forΒ Hoyt and Hayden to deal with his issues, however Cross does a great job of keeping the story flowing.Β  First we’re caught up in Hoyt & Hayden’s relationshipΒ and then we roll straight into some non-stop action, which kept me glued to the pages right til the last page.

This is the first of the Men of Mercy series that I’ve read but I can definitely tell you it will not be my last.Β  Although I feel likeΒ I should warn you that while this one can stand on its own, there are events from the past that come into play along with an underlying plot that will continue on into future stories.Β  Cross does a fabulous job of giving you the details you need as they play into Hoyt’s story and she makes sure that you feel like you got the closure you needed to truly enjoy this one. Β But it is part of a greater overall story and that may frustrate some new readers. Β Or give them a whole new set of books to read (like me) πŸ™‚
