Book Review, Mackenzie Crowne, Players series, To Win Her Heart

We’ve seen this one already as a spotlight, but I finally had a chance to read it πŸ™‚

To Win Her HeartTo Win Her Heart

Book Three in the Players series

by Mackenzie Crowne

In order to protect her, they’ll both have to let their guards down…

Country music’s It Girl Jessi Tucker is fed up with her family’s stifling security measures. The threat of a dangerous stalker has gotten the men in her lifeβ€”including her football star cousin, Tuck Tuckerβ€”monitoring her every move. To get the freedom she yearns for, Jessi hatches a plan to recruit Max Grayson, Tuck’s sexy brawler best friend, to play the role of her new boyfriend. But if her scheme works, will she be forced to hide her true romantic feelings for the sake of her independence? Or will she finally steal the heart of her dream man?…

Max has been pining for Jessi for years and would do anything to protect her, but a professional cage fighter with too many skeletons in his closet has no business being with one of America’s sweethearts. Yet while Max does his best to keep Jessi at arm’s length, the Tucker family persuades him to accept her offer.

Max believes he can keep Jessi safe from danger, but can he shelter her from his own dark secrets, the media’s unforgiving spotlightβ€”and a mutual desire that’s harder to resist each day…

I knew I’d love this one because Crowne did such fabulous things with the first two books and I was so anxious to see what she would do for the oh-so-sexy Max πŸ™‚ Β Even though he’s done extremely well for himself, Max still feels unworthy of Jessi for so many reasons – the way he grew up, the things he did surviving on the streets, their age difference, his relationship with her family.Β  Jessi though sees the man he is now and is convinced that nothing he’s done can change how she feels about him.Β  And now she’s got the perfect chance to make him see it too.

The Tuckers are a force unto themselves!Β  Smart, funny, caring and stubborn, once they start something they don’t give up easily.Β  And Jessi is going to need all of that to help her get through to Max.Β  As the two spend time together he starts letting slip some of the reasons why he’s been fighting their attraction so hard and it’s heartbreaking, for her and for us.

Unfortunately Max can be just as set in his thinking as she is so he’s not going to go down without a fight.Β  Convinced that he’s not good enough to be loved (completely missing how much his friends already love him and how they would do just about anything for him) Max has done everything he can to resist Jessi but close contact for too long pushes even him to the limit … and what a fabulous time that turns out to be πŸ™‚

Interestingly enough the stalker part of it doesn’t play that big of a role, except to throw the two of them together and as a means to give them some alone time.Β  I actually liked the way it is handled because it makes sense in the story but if you are looking for something more suspense-y I think you might be disappointed.Β  Crowne definitely focuses on the romance part of it, delivering an emotional read full of ups & downs as the two fight for what they believe is right.

(Even though this is part of a series, you can start here … although, there’s a good chance you’ll be drawn in too and anxiously await whatever Crowne brings next!)

Book Review, Echo Lake series, Forever This Time, Maggie McGinnis

We saw the second book in this series here. Β Somehow I missed posting the review for this one but I finally got it posted πŸ™‚

cover69790-mediumForever This Time

An Echo Lake Novel

by Maggie McGinnis

Bestselling author Maggie McGinnis welcomes us to Echo Lake, Vermont, where love lost can be found again…

FIND YOUR JOY

Boston therapist Josie Kendrew is really good at mending everyone else’s broken heart-just not her own. When she rushes home to Echo Lake after her father’s stroke, Josie finds herself face-to-face with too many painful memories from the past, including the loss of her “little sister” and Ethan Miller, the boy she left behind. Ethan is now all man-and he has done wonders as CEO of Snowflake Village, the Kendrew family’s Christmas-themed amusement park, which charms year-round visitors from all around New England. Suddenly, Echo Lake holds more than ghosts from the past. It also holds the possibility of a second chance at love…

AND NEVER LET GO…

Ethan’s been picking up the pieces of the Kendrews’ shattered family for as long as he can remember. But doing good isn’t the same as being happy-and Ethan can’t deny that the sweet, smart girl he once adored has become a gorgeous woman he cannot resist. For both Josie and Ethan, it’s a time of love and promise, and of finding the dreams they thought they had lost…

There is a lot of emotion hidden in what could have easily been just another cutesy romance.Β  The characters have a lot of conflicting emotions about Josie’s return – when she left suddenly all those years ago it caused a lot of hurt for a lot of people.Β  It’s rarely easy to come back but with the baggage on all sides, it’s really hard for her.Β  So while they may not have been ready at 18 to handle everything that life threw at them, both Josie and Ethan have done a lot of growing over the years and have worked to find a path that works for them.Β  Now, as adults, they might be better able to forge a long-term relationship if they can just open up to the possibility.

A sweet story about coming home again, forgiving and moving on, Forever This Time is a great start to what is sure to be a wonderful series.

After this, I’m so ready to move to a small town to be their librarian … I can only hope I have such fantastic stories to tell πŸ™‚

Lovestruck Librarians series

by Olivia Dade

Blurb:

Helen Murphy loves her supportive family, her close-knit circle of friends, and her part-time job at the library. What she doesn’t love: the fact that she’s a thirty-six-year-old near-virgin who lives in her parents’ house. Eager to move out and reclaim her independence at long last, she’s determined to get the library’s new Community Outreach Coordinator position. Even if that means working side-by-side with the one man she desperately wants to avoidβ€”Niceville’s ambitious mayor Wes Ramirez, who happens to be her only previous lover, and the source of her greatest humiliation…

Wes needs to make up for his disastrous one-nightβ€”actually, make that one-hourβ€”stand with deliciously nerdy librarian Helen. As they plan the city’s upcoming May Day celebrations together, he’ll try to prove he can do better, in bed and out. It may take every bit of his creativity and determination, but their budding romance has already gone down in flames once . . . and he’ll be damned if he’ll let Helen go a second time.

Excerpt:

β€œI see that the library sent a representative to discuss the history and symbolism of May Day, but I never got a message confirming the name,” Wes said. β€œSo if anyone’s here from the library, please feel free to come to the front and make your presentation.”

That Helen rose from her seat didn’t come as a shock to him. Given her lack of willingness even to look his way, he didn’t think anything other than professional necessity would have driven her within fifty feet of him. She made her way to the front, her eyes focused on the podium rather than him. Only when she arrived and he failed to move out of her way did she raise her gaze.

β€œExcuse me, Mayor Ramirez,” she said, her voice firm.

He couldn’t locate a single iota of warmth in her tone. Certainly not the kind of heat he felt standing only inches away from her.

β€œWes,” he said.

β€œExcuse me,” she repeated. β€œI need to get to the podium.”

He didn’t budge. β€œPlease call me Wes, Helen.”

Now he could feel heat emanating from her, all right. But not the heat of affection or desire. No, the heat he sensed came from fiery rage.

Her soft lips firmed, and she flicked a dismissive glance at the microphone he was blocking with his body. Rather than pushing past him or calling him by his first name, she instead turned to face the crowd from where she stood. β€œGood evening!” she shouted. β€œI’m Helen Murphy, and I’m a part-time adult reference librarian at the Downtown Niceville Library!”

He turned away before she could see the grin he couldn’t stifle. What a firebrand. He was pretty sure if he read her mind right about now, he’d hear something along the lines of, Screw your microphone, Mayor Ramirez. And screw you too.

Once he had his face under control, he turned back to her. β€œHere,” he said, interrupting her introduction and moving away from the podium.

β€œWhy don’t you use the microphone?”

β€œThank you, Mayor Ramirez,” she said.

β€œYou’re welcome, Helen,” he answered, and then took a seat directly in front of her.

Review:

It’s going to sound like I didn’t like this book, but that is SO far from the truth πŸ™‚ Β Dade delivers a sweet, small-town romance with great characters, entertaining interactions, and an easy-to-read voice.

A couple of things did bother me, though.Β  I think that Helen’s expectations of her initial hookupΒ with Wes areΒ a little unrealistic. Β Luckily Dade hasΒ her recognize this and it helps to make her a little more normal. Β She seems to think that it is the start of something grand but she hasΒ a 5 minute conversation in a bar (with a man that doesn’t even know her name) and then they are off to bed. Β It is hurtful when things go sour so quickly but it isn’t all that unexpected. Β Wes does recognize that he messes up and tries to make up for it, but only after he’s got himself straightened out, which I think is admirable.

At that point, they are thrown together to work on a project and Wes wants to have another chance. Β Unfortunately for him, Helen is hurt and not willing to risk her heart again. Β Luckily for him, though, he’s able to charm her into trying to be friends. Β Here’s my other complaint – I really wish we’d been given a glimpse of their interactions during those 2 months. Β There are a few references but I feel like I missed out on something by not seeing that part. Β They develop a deepening relationship that we don’t get to experience and their interactions we do get are so much fun that I want even more. Β I want to be there for the funny stories and the charming moments, getting a chance to see them fall for each other.

Having said that, the rest of MaydayΒ really made me happy. Β I like that Wes took his time to wooΒ her, even if HelenΒ didn’t realize that was what he was doing. Β I also like how real the characters felt – with insecurities and difficulties that made them even more human. Β We get their disastrous first encounter, followed by a not much better re-introduction, and then the struggle to figure out if they can make their lives somehow fit together. Β It’s totally a real life thing – two people who have feelings for each other but with their own hopes, dreams, & baggage. Β Is it possible to make them work or are they fated to part ways?

(Even thoughΒ this is the third book in the series, this one can stand on its own … although, with a few hints here, I’m definitely curious what trouble the other librarians got into while falling in love.)

Olivia Dade author photoAuthor Info:

Olivia Dade grew up an undeniable nerd, prone to ignoring the world around her as she read any book she could find. Her favorite stories, though, were always romances. As an adult, she earned an M.A. in American history and worked in a variety of jobs that required her to hide her bawdy interior under a demure exterior: Colonial Williamsburg interpreter, high school teacher, academic tutor, and (of course) librarian. Finally, though, she realized the call of the hussy could no longer be denied. So now she writes contemporary romantic comedy with plenty of sex, banter, and nerdery. When not writing, she cooks alongside her husband, dabbles in photography, and tries to hide her collection of throbbing-intensive romances from her curious daughter.

EEEEE! Β I’m so excited about this one!

Bybee-DoingItOver-21434-CV-FT-v6Doing It Over

Most Likely To Series, Book One

Montlake Romance, Contemporary

April 19, 2016, First Edition

Paperback & Kindle

Blurb:

One small town. Three close friends. True love to last a lifetime.

Voted Most Likely to Succeed, Melanie Bartlett ended up anything but. The down-on-her-luck single mom wants a complete do-overβ€”is that too much to ask? With her family long gone from River Bend, strong, independent Mel is as surprised as anyone to end up in the quaint small town she once called home. But with her friends, Jo and Zoe, by her side, and a comfortable room at Miss Gina’s quirky bed-and-breakfast, she just might have turned the corner on a new life.

Wyatt Gibson never liked the big city. River Bend suits the ruggedly handsome builder just fine. Wyatt knows he’s home, even if that means being charmed by the appearance of Melanie and her spunky, adorable daughter. Is Wyatt’s calm devotionβ€”even amid a coming stormβ€”enough to convince Mel she may have found a home to call her own, a family that never leaves, and a true love to last a lifetime?

Praise for Doing It Over

β€œThe romance between fiercely independent Melanie and charming Wyatt heats up even as outsiders threaten to derail their newfound happiness. This novel will hook readers with its warm, inviting characters and the promise for similar future installments.” –Publishers Weekly

Β β€œThis brand-new trilogy, Most Likely To, based on yearbook superlatives, kicks off with a novel that will encourage you to root for the incredibly likable Melanie. Her friends are hilarious and readers will swoon over Wyatt, who is charming and strong. Even Melanie’s daughter, Hope, is a hoot! This romance is jam-packed with animated characters, and Bybee displays her creative writing talent wonderfully.” –RT Book Reviews, 4 Stars

Review:

Bybee’s The Weekday Brides series is one of my favorites and I was so excited when I found out she was starting a new one … and I’m ever more thrilled to find out she still has the magic touch!

Like The Weekday Brides, readers will get a fun & charming romance between the hero & heroine – tender moments, funny dialogue, and characters (both main & secondary) that you’ll fall for. Β And while there’s just the right amount of trouble, none of it is overly dramatic, couply issues. Β There was one moment where I was a little scared but I should have realized that Bybee wouldn’t do that to her readers. Β Instead she lets the romance develop naturally between Wyatt and Melanie, leaving any problems to be brought by outside forces.

We’re also given a little bit about Melanie’s friends, kinda like a preview for the next books, but not enough for it to overwhelm the main story. Β Outside of the main three friends the series is based on, we’re also given some entertaining side characters – Melanie’s spunky daughter, outrageous Ms Gina, Zoe’s sexy ex Luke, and Wyatt’s oh-so-awesome dad. Β Every time I turned the page I was so anxious to see what Bybee would bring next and I am SOOO looking forward to the rest of the series.

The True Heroes Series

by Piper J. Drake

HONOR, LOYALTY, LOVE

David Cruz is good at two things: war and training dogs. The ex-soldier’s toughest case is Atlas, a Belgian Malinois whose handler died in combat. Nobody at Hope’s Crossing kennel can break through the animal’s grief. That is, until dog whisperer Evelyn Jones walks into the facility . . . and into Atlas’s heart. David hates to admit that the curvy blonde’s mesmerizing effect isn’t limited to canines. But when Lyn’s work with Atlas puts her in danger, David will do anything to protect her.

Lyn realizes that David’s own battle scars make him uniquely qualified for his job as a trainer. Tough as nails yet gentle when it counts, he’s gotten closer to Atlas than anyone elseβ€”and he’s willing to put his hard-wired suspicion aside to let her do the same. But someone desperate enough to kill doesn’t want Lyn working with Atlas. Now only teamwork, trust, and courage can save two troubled hearts and the dog who loves them both . . .

You really have to like Alphas to get into David.Β  He’s sexy in an in-charge kind of way.Β  He’s military through and through, willing to take on the bad guys and kick some butt.Β  It also tends to make him think he always knows best and to be the strong-silent-type.

Lyn grew up with a career military man for a stepfather and it’s left her with some issues.Β  He’s not a caring man, hard and tough – his way or the highway kind of thing.Β  She’s spent her whole life trying to prove something to him.Β  Unfortunately that bleeds over into her first interactions with David.Β  Luckily they quickly find a middle ground that works for them … and that over time develops into something more.

This one reminded me a lot of Lynn Rae Harris’s HOT series, where you get romance mixed with suspense but not a lot of lightheartedness.Β  Which is fine – there are those kinds of books and then these kinds of books (and other kinds of books :)) but if you were expecting something with cutesy interactions you aren’t going to get it.Β  Instead you get a strong hero, a heroine that can keep up with him, and a bit of intrigue to keep them guessing.

I will warn you now that while we get some answers, we don’t get them all so there is sure to be a continuation of the mystery in future stories.Β  And I have to say that I’m glad this is the start of a series because I didn’t get all of the answers I needed about the guys running the Hope’s Crossing kennel.Β  I can’t wait to get to know David’s friends better πŸ™‚ Β And to find out more about the group who caused them a bunch of trouble here.

A Wild Ride, Book Review, Thompson & Sons, Vivian Arend

21215275A Wild Ride

Thompson & Sons series

by Vivian Arend

He’s the golden boy with a secret past

When Nicole Adams abruptly cancels their secret fling, Troy Thompson is stunned. The sex between them is sizzling, but she’s ready to move onβ€”find a reliable guy, settle down, pop out a few babies. The thought of Nic in another man’s arms is maddening. And while her agenda freaks him out, Troy knows there’s no one in town nearly good enough for her. No one, that is, except him.

She’s his redemption and his future

Nicole doesn’t regret her sexual romp with Troy, but when he insists on taking the next step with herβ€”marriage and parenthoodβ€”she figures he’s out of his mind. Troy? Husband and daddy material? Oh, he’s sexy beyond belief, with the ability to melt her panties with a single command, but the man’s not known for being responsible. Trying for forever with Mr. Frivolous? Everyone thinks it’s a fool’s game.

Everyone except Troy, who’s determined to make Nicole see the real him under the shiny exterior.

I’ve only read one book in this series, One Sexy Ride, but I remember really enjoying it and loving the Thompson family.Β  After reading Troy’s story I’m going to have to go read the entire series so that I can see him with the understanding of his character that we get here πŸ™‚

Troy’sΒ problem is that there is so much more to him than anyone recognizes and I find that kinda sad.Β  He’s so in tuned to everyone around him but those same people miss so much about who he is and what he does for them.Β  And unfortunately that includes Nicole.Β  But that’s going to change with Troy’s full on attack once he decides they are perfect together.

I really enjoyed the fact that once again I get to enjoy a mostly drama free read.Β  The troubles they experience are believable and realistic, and even better they handle them in a logical way.Β  None of it is over the top or drags on too long.Β  The conflict is pretty straight to the point – Nicole has to decide if she is willing to take a chance on Troy, regardless of what kind of reputation he has.Β  It’s full of touching moments and wow-baby heat, with a sexy, cheekyΒ hero and the heroine he’s set his mind on winning.Β  We should all be so lucky!

Excerpt:

β€œCome ride with me anytime,” he said, helping her dismount from the horse when they were back at the barn. He didn’t place his hands on her ass this time, which was both regrettable and a relief. Instead, he steadied her waist with his hands. She turned to face him after he helped her to the ground, and was surprised to find how close they were standing. Close enough that the brim of his hat on her head nearly touched his chin.

β€œThis belongs to you.” She took off the hat and went up on her tiptoes to put it back where it belonged. Their eyes locked as the movement brought them even closer together. Her heart bucked again, like a wild horse ready to bolt.

Returning to flat feet, she started to step away.Β NeededΒ to step away. Too bad Bon-Bon was still behind her, blocking her escape.

β€œJulie?” he said, making her feet pause and her heart stutter. She liked the sound of her name on his lips. Low, deep.

β€œYes?” she asked breathlessly.

He reached out his hand to tame a strand of her hair brushing against her cheek. β€œYou have what I call hat-hair.” He took his time smoothing the hair around her ear, awakening every nerve in her body. Then he slowly dipped, keeping his blue-as-the-ocean eyes on hers, and kissed her.

She melted into him instead of stepping away. The side of his cheek on hers was warm and inviting, intoxicating. His tongue tapped softly against hers, just once, as he swept his hand behind her neck, pulling her gently toward him.

A soft moan escaped her throat, betraying her. She parted her lips for him, inviting him in, begging him to stay, which he did for just a moment longer. Then he broke it off, keeping it sweet. The kiss had threatened to be more, though. It had threatened to take her inside that barn, lay her down on a blanket of hay, and be a whole hell of a lot more.

β€œSee you later, Lawson,” she said, forcing herself to step away from him, away from the horse and the barn. She turned toward her car and didn’t look back. Otherwise, her hormones were going to win and drag this cowboy into the barn and slam the stall doors behind them.

β€œSee you later, Julie,” he called after her.

Review:

We actually saw the first book in this series earlier this week and I was so excited to see Julie & Lawson’s story. Β It’s not an easy series to read – things are light and it doesn’t go by fast. Β It’s something you have to digest because it is full of emotion and requires a slower pace to really appreciate it. Β (And even though this is the second story, it can stand on its own.)

Neither Lawson nor Julie are really ready for a relationship because both of them have issues they need to work through. Β But what the mind knows is right isn’t necessarily what the heart wants. Β They do take their time, spending time together and getting to know one another better. Β It’s a slow build and a sweet one. Β And you’ll find yourself hoping that they find a way to work things out.

I did feel like maybe Lawson didn’t address his survivor’s guilt as much as he should have. Β Of course, we got the resolution of his issues with flying but I think there was more there that could have been explored. Β I did like that Julie did resolve things with her ex. Β That was an important step for her to make.

Even though this series take a little more effort than I’m used to because of its depth, I’m definitely enjoying it and I’m looking forward to seeing what Rains brings us next. Β She has options (and I’m really hoping one of them is the guy who lost his leg in the crash that grounded Lawson).

Porter Family series

by Becky Wade

Paperback:Β 400 pages

Publisher:Β Bethany House Publishers (May 3, 2016)

Blurb:

Gray Fowler, star NFL tight end, is being pursued by a stalker, so his team hires a protection agency to keep Gray under the watch of a bodyguard at all times. When Gray meets Dru Porter, an agent assigned to him, he’s indignant. How can an attractive young female half his size possibly protect him?

But Dru’s a former Marine, an expert markswoman, and a black belt. She’s also ferociously determined to uncover the identity of Gray’s stalker. And she’s just as determined to avoid any kind of romantic attachment between herself and the rugged football player with the mysterious past. But the closer they get to finding the stalker, the closer they grow to each other. As the danger rises, can Dru and Gray entrust their hearts–and their lives–to one another?

β€œDown-to-earth, in-depth characters give the story an authentic feel. Dru, being the youngest Porter, is headstrong and sympathetic, and when she matches wits with Gray, their connection is as electric as their budding romance is sweet. A delightful read.”—RT Book Reviews

Review:

This is only the second one of this series I’ve read (the other was A Love Like Ours)Β andΒ I’ll definitely be looking up the rest πŸ™‚Β  It’s a contemporary Christian novel so it is very low on the heat scale and the characters’ religion does play an important role.Β  However it isn’t overly preachy so if that isn’t your thing then I think you’ll still enjoy it.

Dru is a little harsh at first – one of those girls whoΒ feels like she hasΒ to prove that she isΒ as good (or better) than any guy, but once you get to know her she proves to be much more complicated.Β  Gray has some scars from his childhood, which led to a distance between him & God and a difficulty to commit to a woman.Β  Thrown together by the threat of a stalker, the two quickly find themselves growing closer and challenging each other’s beliefs.

Speaking of the stalker, I thought that Wade handled the suspense portion really well.Β  The way it went didn’t come out of left field but it wasn’t overly obvious either. Β It fit well into the story and left me satisfied with the ending.

Returning readers will be pleased by updates on Dru’s siblings but new readers will be fine meeting them for the first time.Β  And likely looking forward to going back and reading their stories – I know I am πŸ™‚ Β Her brother Bo and sister-in-law Meg play a pretty important role but it’s just a footnote to their story, not a continuation so starting here is fine.

Even though this is the last of this series, I hope that Wade plans on starting a new one with Gray’s teammates.Β  I think that a team full of manly football players could give her a lot of material to work with.

(This story is part of the Porter Family novels but can be read as a stand alone.)

Annie Rains, Book Review, Hero's Welcome series, Welcome to Forever

A Hero’s Welcome Novel

by Annie Rains

If you love Kristan Higgins, Susan Mallery, or Jill Shalvis, you won’t want to miss the Hero’s Welcome military romance series! Welcome to Forever introduces a small coastal town where America’s best and brightest risk everything for love.

In Seaside, North Carolina, there are two kinds of people: Marines, and kids of Marines. Then there’s Kat Chandler. Recently hired as the principal of Seaside Elementary, Kat makes it her mission to turn the school into a place of peace and calm. That’s not going to be easy with hard-liner parents like Micah Peterson storming in, telling her how to do her jobβ€”and then kissing her with those gorgeous lips of his and turning her brain into mush.

As a Marine Sergeant and a single dad, Micah Peterson has just two priorities: doing his job better than anyone else, and getting the absolute best for his son, Ben. But when he meets Ben’s beautiful new principal, a different yearning shifts into focus. He wants her, sure, but he’s also moved by the connection Kat forges with her students. So after learning that she refuses to date Marines, Micah sets two more objectives: convincing Kat to give him a chance . . . and then holding on to her forever.

(We’ll be seeing book 2 of this series later this week so I wanted to get this in first .. I read this one ages ago but somehow missed posting the review  😦 )

Rains delivers a wonderfully realistic look at two people whose history makes getting involved quite complicated.Β  Micah is an amazing dad and works really hard to give his son the best life he can (and I have to say Ben is such a bright spot in an already enjoyable book – so sweet, spunky and positive, I think he was my favorite character).Β  Kat has already suffered heartbreak once and isn’t looking to be involved with a marine ever again, but meeting such a devoted dad and stand-up guy as Micah makes it hard to resist.

I loved seeing these two become friends and then more.Β  There’s the required troubles between them but they are all handled in a believable manner and never seem to overpower the story.Β  I can’t wait to see what Rains brings us next Β πŸ™‚

Cupid's QuestCupid’s Quest

Cupid’s Crossing Book 1

byΒ Lori Soard

Publisher: Grace Nicole Books

Pages: 201

Genre: Inspirational Contemporary Romance

Blurb:

The only life Gracie has ever known has been the nursing home and the residents who are like family to her. Now, she risks losing it all and her friends scattering to different homes if she can’t come up with the money to save the business.

Between caring for his ailing mother and running the family farm, Brandt is stretched thin. Too thin. When his mother begs him to enter a local scavenger hunt, win the prize money, and convert the farm into an orchard, he knows he can’t refuse her anything, so he reluctantly agrees.

While seeking clues to the scavenger hunt, Gracie and Brandt keep bumping into each other. Gracie’s always had a crush on him that keeps her from stringing two coherent words together. Brandt doesn’t understand why she dislikes him so much she won’t even talk to him. If the nursing home residents would settle down and stop getting into crazy shenanigans long enough, the two might figure out that they have more than a little in common.

Excerpt:

You are listening to KARE – the radio station that cares about you. If you haven’t picked up one of our Cupid’s Quest Scavenger Hunt forms, stop in at Hart Grocery or the library today to get one. The first person to solve the scavenger hunt wins the grand prize. That’s right, folks, $20,000 and a trip to Hawaii for two, all expenses paid. What are you waiting for? C’mon Cupid’s Corner residents, let the hunt begin.

Gracie Resquire turned the knob and flicked off the radio. $20,000 would save Days Never New Retirement Home and keep the 24 residents from being thrown out of the only home they had. Ever since Walt Jensen from Cupid’s Bank and Trust had broken the news to her that the bank would not extend their mercy any further until payments were caught up, she’d been praying for a solution. The large, remodeled 1920s church that she and her parents had painstakingly turned into a full service retirement home cost more to keep up each month than she brought in and the late payments had quickly gotten out of control. Now, she owed nearly $10,000 to the bank and had no idea how she could ever pay it.

If she could win the scavenger hunt, she could catch up with the mortgage and have some cushion in the bank. Even if it didn’t completely save them, it would keep them in a home for another year or two. For some of these residents, that would be enough. The others she would worry about when and if the time came that she was again unable to stay afloat. Now, she just needed to get the residents on board with the plan and figure out how to solve the scavenger hunt before anyone else did.

Review:

I really enjoyed this book. Β It’s one of those super sweet, innocent romances where it’s all about getting to know the characters and watching them fall in love. Β There is no sex and the characters belief in God plays a huge part in everything that they do.

Gracie faith is an influence in almost every minute of her life. Β She openly prays and listens as God talks to her. Β Brandt’s relationship with God has taken a beating, with a lot of tragedies happening to those he loves. Β But meeting Gracie has him rethinking things.

The fact that Gracie has had a thing for Brandt for years, and that he leaves her tongue tied, just tickles me something fierce. Β She’s so lovable and he’s such a good-hearted man that you just know that they will make a good match. Β She’s just go to get over her nervousness. Β Just about anytime they were together I found myself going “ahhh” and smiling.

I also love the motley crew of residents at Gracie’s nursing home. Β They are a hoot and add a little extra heart to an already touching story. Β I’m hoping that as we get more books in the series we’ll get to see more of them because they can’t help but be a boost of fun.

For a heartwarming, sweetheart of a story,Β Cupid’s QuestΒ is a surefire winner. Β And I’m sure that Soard is going to deliver again with whatever comes next.

Lori SoardAuthor Info:

Lori Soard has a PhD in Journalism and Creative Writing, but she’s hardly the stuffy professor type. She loves nothing better than a good romantic comedy and thinks the good guy should always win and the ending should always be happy.

From an early age, Lori started honing her story telling skills. As a kid she was rarely seen without a book in her hand, even walking and reading at the same time. Her first stories were about the world around her. At twenty she wrote her first novel, which she admits was horrible. At twenty-one, she sold her first article to a local newspaper. Once she got that taste of having others read her work and realizing that she could reach others and touch their hearts, there was no turning back for this natural born writer.

“If I can make someone’s day just a tiny bit better,” Lori says, “if I can make them smile even though they are sad, make them think things could be better, make them understand how much God loves them, then I have accomplished something. I write my stories, articles and books with that one person in mind who really needs the message. If I can change one person’s perspective, then I’ve succeeded.”

Lori is a life-long Hoosier and lives in southern Indiana with her two daughters, husband and beloved pets. “During the extreme low points in life, it has been my animals that have seen me through. There is nothing like the deep devotion of a dog or the unconditional love of a cat.” Lori adores animals and while some of her dear friends have crossed over the Rainbow Bridge she will always stand by her belief that animals make the world a better place.

Her latest book is the inspirational contemporary romance, Cupid’s Quest.
