Even better, she’s interested in learning about BDSM for what he suspects are more than scholarly reasons, and Will decides he’s just the man to teach her about it, hopefully claiming her for his own.

Will and Vanessa begin a journey which teaches both of them there’s more to BDSM than meets the eye. In the process, they grow closer, but when Will’s job puts him in the line of fire – literally – their roles are reversed and Vanessa has to take charge. by Robin Bielman

Blurb:

Playing it safe never felt so risky.

Erin Watters is her small town’s resident wild child—she doesn’t do boring, and after having her heart annihilated, she definitely doesn’t do relationships. Her friends have other ideas, though, and when they throw down a matchmaking challenge, impulsive Erin can’t ignore it. Even when the annoyingly hot Troy Strieber accepts the matchmaker role…

As a rescue paramedic, Troy’s used to watching out for people. Never mind the bet he made with his buddy to play Erin’s wingman. But the more time he spends with the sexy, charismatic woman, the more he discovers a side of her she doesn’t let many see. Soon what started as an innocent game of matchmaking has them both thinking about the person right under their nose. But Troy’s a play-it-safe guy, and he won’t let a woman who lives for risk ever steal his heart.

Book Review:

The newest in Bielman’s “Secret Wishes” series, Wild About Her Wingman, is just as sweet and touching and engaging as Kissing the Maid of Honor and Her Accidental Boyfriend.  Although it is not necessary to have read these books first, I loved them so much that I highly recommend it.  Bielman delivers touching stories with a charming, witty style that makes them seem light-hearted at first but you quickly realize they have an amazing emotional depth that keeps you glued to the pages.

If you have read the previous stories, you know that we’ve met Erin and Troy before and that this trip to a HEA was inevitable.  (Again, it isn’t necessary to have read those stories, you’ll easily keep up.)  Erin is a bit of a daredevil on the outside but on the inside she’s very afraid to give her heart to a man.  And for Troy, a tragedy in his past has convinced him that he needs a more down to earth partner.  Both of them have very real and very understandable reasons for thinking a relationship between the two won’t work, but of course the heart has other plans.

These two have to be a couple of my favorite characters.  Erin could have easily been unlikeable – she’s somewhat prickly and seriously confident and a little wild (although never reckless) and very closed off – but Bielman makes her very sympathetic and compelling.  She’s complex and troubled but through the love of her friends and family she starts to open up more.  Troy’s past has created a man who thinks he needs to play it safe and Erin definitely isn’t safe.  He’s sweet, caring, funny and sexy.  The interactions between the two as they slowly allow themselves to act on their attraction are deliciously fun and the ending brought a smile to my face as they finally figured out how they could get that HEA they both want so bad.

Entangled Publishing wants their Bliss line of books to be uplifting and heartwarming, reflecting the romantic troubles of modern couples, and I think that Wild About Her Wingman does it perfectly.  Focusing on two compelling people, with a cast of engaging secondary characters, smart dialogue, and a riveting story, Bielman delivers another winner.  She’s definitely going on my Not To Be Missed list.

Book Review – Happy Easter

Tags

, , , , ,

Happy Easter everyone … unfortunately I was distracted by family events and didn’t get a book review up yesterday.  So today, we’ll get a two for one special.

*****

cover42685-mediumMiss Emma Harlow hasn’t earned the reputation as a hoyden for nothing, so when the Duke of Trent discovers her in his conservatory stealing one of his orchids, he’s isn’t surprised—charmed, delighted and puzzled, yes, but not surprised. It is Emma who is amazed. She has naturally concluded that the man reading in the conservatory must be the country cousin (who else in London would actually read?) and is quite vexed to discover that he is the Duke of Trent himself—imagine, stealing the duke’s prize Rhyncholaelia digbyana under his very nose!

But her vexation doesn’t last long. For Emma is a practical young lady with a mission: to end her dear sister Lavinia’s engagement to the villainous (and dreadfully dull!) Sir Waldo Windbourne, and she thinks that the famous libertine is just the man for the job. If he would only seduce her sister away from Sir Waldo…. Well, not seduce exactly, but flirt mercilessly and engage her interest. Perhaps then Lavinia would jilt the baron. The Duke of Trent is resistant, of course. Despite his reputation, he does not toy with the affections of innocents. And besides, it’s not her sister he longs to seduce.

The misfit is one of my favorite character types and Emma is as misfitty as they come.  She’s strong willed, smart, impetuous, and blunt – definitely not your typical Ton lady.  I really enjoyed getting to know her because, while her thoughts might be different than the norm, they are logical and make a lot of sense.   She’s amusing, especially when she doesn’t mean to be, but has a huge heart for those she loves.  Most especially her sister.  Her plan to have Trent flirt with her might not have been well thought out but it was made with love.

Trent, like most historical romance bachelors, isn’t in the market for a wife but that doesn’t mean everyone else isn’t looking for one for him.  And while he is content with his life the way it is, one meeting with Emma throws that out the window.  He’s strong of mind and body, smart, caring and open-minded especially for the time.  He’s quickly enthralled with Emma, even if he doesn’t want to be, and it is a quick slide from there to their happy ending.

Not to say there isn’t some trouble along the way.  Getting rid of Sir Waldo isn’t that easy and it definitely leads to quite an adventure.  You definitely can’t be a stickler for the authenticity of the time with The Harlow Hoyden but then again I’m not reading historical romances for a history lesson.  I want the romance and it delivers that in spades.  It’s fun and humorous and love wins out, so who could ask for anything more!

*****

cover28981-mediumRidley Wells has no idea what to do with her life now that she’s graduated from college. But when a friend is murdered and her apartment is trashed, she runs to the only person she trusts, her twin sister. No one will think to look for her in the rinky-dink Virginia town of New Haven.

Of course, her luck lands her passed out in the grass in front of resident bad boy, music producer Jackson Alexander. Strike 1! Then she realizes Raina’s out of the country and she has nowhere else to go. Strike 2!

So when the handsome producer with the platinum smile mistakes her for her sister, she gets an idea.

Where better to hide than in plain sight?

WARNING: This book contains cloak and dagger intrigue, family drama, brothers fighting, supermodels with attitude and hot sex between people who can’t keep their hands off each other. Just saying…

I really like the third book in this series, He’s the Man, and I was super excited to give this one a try.  And while it was good, it wasn’t quite as good.  I’m not good with deception romances and while I understand why Ridley did what she did, I also think that she should take the consequences that goes along with lying.  At one point Jackson doubts her and she gets upset, which is understandable because she thought their relationship was on better footing than that, but she also needs to understand that he has good reason to have doubts.

They mystery around who killed her friend is very intriguing and plays out very well.  I was hooked and was anxious to see how it all tied together.  And I really liked getting to know the other Alexanders a little better.  I’ve read the prologue to the series, Teasing Trent, and book 3, He’s the Man, so it was like coming home to see them again.  It didn’t even really bother me that I read them out of order because Matt’s story only involves the Alexanders a little bit.  Most of it is about him and Penny.

I’m going to read All I Need is You, book 4 in the series, and see how I like it.  I’m curious, since I liked the mystery so much, if it was just the lying that threw me off.  If that sort of thing doesn’t bother you, then I highly suggest giving One More Day a shot based on how much I enjoyed the others that I’ve read by Malone.

Spotlight – Trusting Chance

Tags

,

As you might have noticed, I don’t discriminate based on the heat level in my books.  As long as it is a good story and I get my Happy Ever After, it doesn’t matter to me if they never get past kissing or if they have down and dirty sex in graphic detail.  I know that diferent people have different thresholds, so only keep reading if your’s is set to Super Hot.

Trusting Chanceis the first book in a new series written by new author, Caitlyn O’Leary.  I was intrigued by the blurb but I also got a couple of sneak peeks and liked what I read, and I thought you might too.  Check out the below (including a bit of Q&A with Caitlyn) and, if it seems like your cup of tea, the book released earlier this week so you can get your own copy.  And make sure you come back and let everyone know what you think!

*****

If you had to choose to give up one, which would it be, chocolate or sex?

“Good-Bye cruel world, I couldn’t live here, if I was denied either one! Of course, the opposite is also implied…my happiest moments include both sex and chocolate at the same time.”

Since you’re married, describe your first date with your husband.

I was forty-five minutes late to meeting him, and he was walking out the door when I showed up. I did a sort of interview to find out if he was a “good guy”. He said he never felt more comfortable on a date.   I got a lot of great information that convinced me he was a great guy and we should go out again!

Do you fall in love with the characters you write?

I fall in love with them every single time. In “Trusting Chance” I loved Chance’s mischievous humor and caring when he schemed. I loved Sam’s over protective, sometimes domineering side, but that he also had inner demons that he needed to work out.   I fell in love with Josie as a great friend of mine, (even if she was so small that she could be carried around everywhere by the heroes!)

Where do you get the ideas to develop your characters?

Some things are definitely art imitating life, which makes it easy for me to understand what the characters are going through. Other things are just internal struggles that I’ve battled within my own psyche. I’m also an avid people watcher, and have worked with and listened to others for years. I’ve been blessed to see so many people struggle and grow. I hope that my characters embody the very real strength of others that I have known.

Do you ever get angry at the characters you write?

Yes, occasionally I get a little impatient them. My characters remind me of me, they are always doing something to paint themselves into a corner. For example in “Protecting Olivia” the main character always thought she was invincible because she knew that the cause she was fighting for was just, but she often ended up in harm’s way and needing help.

My characters don’t do things maliciously or stupidly they usually are trying to do what’s right, but they make a mess of things and it requires other characters to set them straight. I regularly require the people in my life to help put me back on the rails, as well. Thank God for good friends and family!

What genre(s) do you write?

I write erotica, Menage a Trois, Happily Ever After. What’s the point of writing a book without a happily ever after?

Why did you choose to write erotica?

I always knew I wanted to be a writer, and I was a fan of romances, so I was always going to write Happily Ever Afters. In the last few years, much to my husband’s delight, I’ve become a fan of erotica. I wrote a bit and found I was good at it. I truly believe we all need a little mental stimulation to keep us fantasizing and happy. This, in turn, makes our real lives so much sweeter!

Do you ever find yourself slipping away and becoming so immersed in your story it affects how you relate to others?

If I’m writing a really strong heroine, I’ll end up being a lot more blunt at work. I’ve I’m writing a more submissive heroine, I find myself deferring to others more than I normally would.

Are you in any of your books?

Because it is erotica, I have had mixed results, my husband is very supportive. All of my family is happy that I’m successful, even if they aren’t really thrilled with the genre that I’m writing. The funniest reaction is from my 80 year old father who is anxiously awaiting the print version of my first “dirty” book to come out. He’s got everyone in his retirement community and the food bank where he volunteers waiting to buy copies as well. Apparently they are all excited to read it. Thanksgiving is going to be really interesting this year.

He realizes that her time growing up with her mother has left her with physical and emotional scars and a belief that she is unworthy of love.  A soul-healing sanctuary, Fate Harbor is accepting of Triad alliances, and Chance believes that he, Josie, and Sam can forge a lasting. fulfilling relationship.  Sam suffered a childhood of bouncing in and out of foster care, added to recent trauma from fighting for his country that left him desolate.  Chance despaired of saving the brother of his heart, but finding Josie again has given him hope that the three of them can make the perfect future together.

When Josie’s 18-year old, younger twin sisters arrive, Chance’s plans are challenged. After learning of Josie’s unorthodox relationship, one of them says the idea of the triad “hurts her heart”.  Can Josie go against her beloved sister?  How can Josie not follow her heart, in loving these two men unconditionally?  With the help of Fate Harbor’s townfolk, a dance festival, and some hunky firemen, a happy ending is guaranteed for all.

Excerpt:

“I don’t require a keeper, Sam. I’d like you to leave.” He turned to her.

“I think you need someone to watch out for you, someone who cares about you. When was the last time you had someone you could lean on?” When he saw her confused expression, he had his answer.

“How many people have you taken care of over the years?” he asked quietly.

Josie bit her lip, and he just couldn’t help himself, he brushed his fingers over her mouth, rescuing that bit of flesh. “I would love it if you would let me take care of you; just a little bit…is that so wrong?” He cupped her face, and bent for a slow taste of those luscious lips.

Josie couldn’t stop her response. His words had unlocked something deep within her. She couldn’t remember a time when she could literally lean into someone, and she reveled in it. Her arms lifted to encompass his broad shoulders. God, he felt so hard, so good and strong. Trying to get even closer she lifted up on her toes, and gasped in pain. He felt it in their kiss, and correctly interpreted it. He broke away and looked at her. In one quick moment, she was lifted in his arms and then found herself settled on his lap on her sofa. She looked up at him in wonder. “You’ll hurt yourself doing that,” she admonished.

“Baby, you’re just a little thing,” Sam said.

Josie snorted in disbelief.

“Okay, you’re lush and curvy, just the way I love women. I can’t stand a woman who’s going to blow away at the first strong wind. But, Josie, compared to me, you are a little thing, and you’re the perfect size, with the absolute perfect body. Do you understand me? Are you finally hearing me?” Josie looked up at him, and saw the absolute truth on his face. She turned away, and nuzzled his neck, not wanting him to see the sheen of tears in her eyes. This man, who made her blood sizzle, was turning her self-image upside down. She felt like a huge weight had been lifted from her heart.

“I know we’re going to talk about our injuries, but can you please tell me how such a beautiful woman could think she needed to hide in clothes four times her size? How she could think that she wouldn’t have men falling at her feet?” Josie couldn’t help giggling at the outrageous statement.

“I’m serious, Baby. At least a quarter of your male customers are coming into Sweet Dream Desserts to see the sights, not for the pastries.” Sam tilted her head so she was forced to look at him. “Let me guess, it was some guy who convinced you that you, you were less than perfect.”

“Actually, it started way earlier than that. My mom was one of those women who would blow away in the wind, and she was constantly harping on my weight. So, it’s pretty much ingrained that I’m fat. And, yeah, I got pretty serious about a guy, and when I finally agreed to sleep with him, well, he wasn’t all that impressed with my body. He insisted the lights be turned off.” Josie had to turn away from Sam. She couldn’t stand to see pity in his eyes.

Once again he turned her face, and she ended up looking up at him, and what she saw was anger. “Baby, that should never have happened. I understand a parent belittling you, boy do I understand that, but I can’t understand the asshole issues. If I was lucky enough to get a chance to make love to you, I would want all the lights on. I wouldn’t want to miss a thing.”

Guest Post – Wild About Her Wingman

This morning the wonderfully fun Robin Bielman is paying us a visit and she’s talking about why her newest hero is extra sexy, then she shares about her new book.  I had the pleasure of getting an advance copy (thanks Robin!) and I have to say it is fantastic … but I’m a little biased because I loved the earlier books in the series.  And I definitely agree that rescue paramedics are hot, especially Mr Troy.

I’ve also included my review below so once you take a peek at Wild About Her Wingman make sure you check it out too.

*****

Hi Julie! Thanks so much for having me here on Romantic Reads and Such. I’m so happy to be visiting with you and your readers and be a guest blogger today.

In my latest Secret Wishes novel, WILD ABOUT HER WINGMAN, my hero Troy is a rescue paramedic. He’s passionate about helping people, about keeping them safe. When it comes to Erin, the girl he’s playing wingman and matchmaker for—and the girl he continually butts heads with—he’ll do what’s right for her. Even if it means ignoring the fact that she makes him feel things he swore to keep at bay.

Troy’s an outdoor junkie who loves the adrenaline rush of rock climbing and sky diving, but he’s also the do-good boy next door who plays it safe. A guy I hope readers will fall in love. In fact, I think there are lots of good reasons to love rescue paramedics.

Six Reasons to Love Rescue Paramedics

  1. They put others before themselves. These guys have no fear and will protect at any cost. They don’t panic in an emergency and are quick-thinking. Never give up, is their motto.
  2. Green is their favorite Lifesaver candies color. (Get it? Life savers. hee hee)
  3. They are experts in the area of mouth-to-mouth. 🙂3
  4. Paramedics know life is precious and shouldn’t be taken for granted, so they live life to the fullest. They’ll take you on the greatest adventure of your life and they understand the importance of partnership and commitment.
  5. These guys are Safety Studs and can help you danger-proof your life. They’re also wickedly good with first aid. Cut your finger? A paramedic will treat your wound and then kiss you to make it all better.5
  6. They have strong hands. Strong everything, really. They’re physically up to any task you throw at them. And they always maintain their, um, equipment.

So there you have it, my reasons to adore rescue paramedics. What’s one of your favorite qualities in a romance hero?

Wild About Her Wingman

To lighten up Tax Day we’re joining the Indulgence Mixing Business With Pleasure Blog Tour, which is highlighting The Seduction Game by Emma Shortt and A Night of Misbehaving by Carmen Falcone. AND we get a special guest post by author Emma Shortt, who shares the (wonderfully hilarious) Ten Reasons Why Dating a Geek Girl is Awesome!!

*****

  1. We don’t need anyone to fix out computers for us…in fact we’ll fix yours if you need us to…and we won’t even check your browsing history (we totally will but we’ll be thrilled if we find a stash of hentai).
  2. We’ll have no problem with your Superman underwear/bath robe/tee shirt. Actually we’ll probably steal it for ourselves.
  3. We think it’s cute that you spent a significant amount of your teen years reading comic books…we did too.
  4. We’re totally up for Star Trek/BSG/Dr Who/Avengers weekend binges.
  5. If you take us on a date it is perfectly acceptable to ask what our favorite element is. But we’ll assume you mean periodic table, not which part of your body.
  6. We also like to be asked what our favorite number is but we’ll answer honestly (usually with a prime) so do not ask this as a roundabout way of scoping out the ’69 possibilities’…you’ll just confuse us.
  7. We’ll think it’s kinda cute if you don’t know how a spectrometer works and all sorts of awesome if you do.
  8. We have no issue with you fantasizing about Dani from GoT. We’ll join you.
  9. We will always buy you cool gifts…mostly because we want them for ourselves. Who doesn’t want a Romulan bird of prey made to scale?
  10. We’ll adore your cat because Data has one and so does Spock (enough said).

If you’d like to know more about why dating a geek girl is awesome then check out The Seduction Game by Emma Shortt.

Guest Post – Through His Eyes

This morning the wonderful Deborah Camp gives us newbie writers some tips and then lets us take a peek at her newest book, Through His Eyes. . . which looks perfect for those who dig suspense stories.  Enjoy!

Tips for Novice Writers – and Reviewers!

Hi, everyone! Thanks for allowing me the chance to blog with you.

When I taught writing there was always a student in every class who would approach me after having a few pages edited by me and ask, “Should I just give up writing?” To which I would answer, “If all it takes is for me to tell you to, then by all means, give it up!”

Sure, I knew the student wanted me to stroke and coo and say, “No, you must not quit!” But really? If that’s all it had taken for me to stop writing, I would have thrown away my pen and paper in fifth grade!

If you’re a writer, you write. Doesn’t matter if no one but you reads it. Stories and characters waltz about in your brain and you simply have to allow them to blossom into text. However, once we do allow our works to be seen by people other than those who personally know us, then we have to learn to accept criticism and we must understand when to take advice to heart and when to dismiss it. These are difficult lessons to master.

Here are the top three things I’ve learned from reviewers:

  1. Get as many reviews as possible from people you don’t know. Look for similar praise and beefs. If several reviewers praised your snappy dialogue, rejoice and strive to make your dialogue sparkle even more. Conversely, if several reviewers note that your pace is slow or that it was difficult to understand her heroine’s motivation, take a close look at those hiccups. Fix them before you write your next book.
  2. When reviewers find typos or bad grammar and punctuation, hire a professional editor and proofreader for your next project. Be aware that editors and proofreaders aren’t the same thing. Editors discuss plotting, characterization, pacing, word choices, and sentence structure. Proofreaders catch typos, incorrect punctuation, misspellings, and continuity mistakes.
  3. Be sure that the people who review your books actually like the type of book you’ve written. I’ve had yucky reviews from people who admitted that “I don’t usually read this kind of thing” or “romances aren’t my cup of tea.” I dismiss those. Same goes for the editor you choose. Ask the editor who she/he has read in your genre and what her/his favorite books are in your genre. If she/he hasn’t read any books that have been published in the past two years, then she/he probably isn’t savvy about what’s hot and what’s not in your field.

In closing, let me also caution you not to reply to a reviewer or editor until you’ve given yourself a day to think about it. Temper whatever you say or write, understanding that your work was published and people have a right to their opinion. With reviewers, it’s best to thank them, taking them  to task only when they get “personal” in their critiques. With editors, it’s best to discuss why and how you can improve what you’ve put on paper. Great editors can make you a great writer, so when you find one, don’t ruin the relationship by being too cantankerous and stubborn.

Excerpt:

Trudy drew in a breath and told herself to chill out. Levi sat in the rattan chair to her right, crossed his legs, and flicked a white thread from his black trousers. He was the picture of calmness and she felt as if her chest was full of butterflies.

“Do you two have separate rooms?” Trudy asked, trying to drive past her nervousness and get Quintara’s goat.

Levi smirked and glanced at a cackling Quintara.

“Levi’s too busy seducing all the pretty television anchor women to want to share a room with a well-rounded, older enchantress like me. Isn’t that right, Levi?”

“You’re the one who was announcing your room number to every waiter and barkeep we ran into last night.”

“And a lot of good it did me,” Quintara said, flipping her string of red beads and puckering her lips in a pout. “But let’s talk about murder.” She glanced from him to Trudy. “Have you felt anything, dear? He’s been talking to you, hasn’t he?”

Trudy fidgeted on the sofa. “Yes, a little. I don’t know . . .”

“You do know,” Quintara said, her tone scolding, scalding. “You have felt him?”

“Yes.” The word almost stuck in her throat. She glanced toward Levi and flinched when she saw that he was completely focused on her. Talk about intense! It was like she was being blasted by a laser beam. “He’s thinking of murdering a barmaid that he knows. But I’m not entirely sure—.” She caught the rapier-edged glance Levi and Quintara exchanged. “What?”

“You have the right person, dear.” Quintara nodded to a folded newspaper on the coffee table. “A barkeep was murdered last night. He mutilated her.”

“Oh, no!” Feeling as if she had been socked in the gut, Trudy reached for the newspaper and located the front page article easily. The details were sketchy. No clues. No leads. Used a serrated knife. Mutilation. Worked at the Gold Lagoon on Canal Street. A shiver ran through her and guilt brought hot tears to the back of her eyes. “I should have told you about the vision sooner.”

“And what? We would have cased out every bar in Key West and warned the potential victims?” Quintara shrugged. “We must have more to go on than that, dear. We’ll put our heads together and create a profile of this killer. We’ll get to know him so well that we can predict his movements. Eventually, we’ll be ahead of him and be able to identify him and help catch him.”

Trudy turned toward Levi to find that he was still studying her, one brow slightly arched. “What have you been getting about this guy?” she asked.

He lifted one broad shoulder. “The victims haven’t given me much to go on yet. They didn’t see him coming and were knocked out. The woman before this one – Janie Fullbright was her name – was blindfolded, gagged, and when she came to, her wrists and ankles were tied. She was a heroine addict.” He held out a hand for the newspaper. He wore a silver ring on his middle finger and the square black onyx in it glinted in the sunlight.

When he moved, Trudy caught a whiff of lemony lime. One cool customer, she thought. Everything about him was controlled, calculated almost. But there was an undercurrent of turmoil just below his polished surface. She’d always felt it and that intrigued her about him –more than his psychic abilities or his reputation as a womanizer.

Since she appreciates men with devilish twinkles in their eyes, she likes to mix laughter in with the love scenes in her books.
