Guest Post – Betting the Billionaire

This morning Avery Flynn discusses the appeal of the billionaire hero and gives us a look at her new book, Betting the Billionaire, featuring her sexy billionaire hero, Gabe.  And along the way we also get a peek at Ros Clarke’s yummy hero, Emile (oh, what a perfectly sexy name for a French soccer player!) … You definitely don’t want to miss either of these two!

*****

According to Forbes magazine there are more than 1,600 billionaires in the world today. Let that sink in for a moment.

*gets coffee*

*reads Jezebel*

*imagines winning the lottery*

Is your mind blown or what? That’s a lot of billionaires. I always figured most billionaires lived in the pages of romance novels but no, there are more than 1,600 of them. That’s a lot of book fodder right there.

The United States alone has 56 female billionaires—including the eighth richest woman (Christy Walton). I’m trying to remember the last romance book I read with a female billionaire heroine. Anyone? Put it in the comments, I want to go read that story.

The youngest billionaire in the U.S.? It’s a tie between 29 year olds Mark Zuckerberg and Dustin Moskovitz—both Facebook billionaires. The oldest? David Rockefeller Sr. at the ripe old age of 98. The hottest imaginary billionaire? That would have to be Gabe Campos from Betting the Billionaire. 🙂

Forbes has a list of the worlds billionaires (http://www.forbes.com/billionaires/list/#tab:overall) that you can peruse. They update it on a daily basis and rearrange the list as needed because of market fluctuations. How nuts is that? I don’t know about you, but I wouldn’t be so into having the world know whenever I bounced a check. It’s got to be awkward at their billionaire club meetings. Do you offer condolences when someone drops five percent or just pretend you didn’t notice?

All the billionaire Googling got me curious. What is it about billionaires that fascinates us as romance readers? Sure the money is awesome, but as Biggie said so succinctly, “More money, more problems.”

For me, I love a billionaire hero (or heroine!) because I like brains. Smart people are sexy and in most billionaire romance books, it’s either a self-made billionaire or someone who inherited but is determined to prove their worth without the family funds. I like that. What can I say, brains and gumption are a deadly combination. Add in six pack abs (come on, it’s my romance fantasy here) and I’m all aflutter.

How about you? What is it about the billionaire hero or heroine that makes you grab a book off the shelf?

Blurb:

Theresa Chartley has no time for marriage, and no room for disappointment–especially with French soccer player Emile Renaud. Sure, he’s gorgeous, but he’s wrong for a career woman like Theresa. If only her mother would stop pressuring her to get married and let her live her own life. Finding a very unsuitable husband to shock her parents into silence and put an end to the marriage campaign is the only answer. Emile will do just fine.

Theresa’s outrageous proposal is the answer to Emile’s problem. They’re complete opposites living in different worlds, but a fake marriage will let him ditch his clingy ex once and for all. Then he’ll be free of commitment and free to live his life the way he wants to.

A contract. Twelve months. And they walk away scot-free. But a year of marriage tests them both in unimaginable ways. Maybe Emile isn’t unsuitable after all, but how can Theresa let herself love him when she signed a contract to let him go?

If that man calls her one more time… So what if Gabe Campos is a model-dating billionaire who gets Keisha Jacobs hotter than a Ferrari’s engine on the straightaway? He keeps pushing her to sell her family’s furniture business, but she’ll never give in—not unless she wants to give her father a second heart attack.

All Gabe should be thinking about is how he’ll finally get revenge on the man who killed his father. But when he meets the man’s daughter, Keisha, instead of focusing on destroying Jacobs Fine Furnishings, he can’t get her warm-whisky voice out of his mind.

Forced by a snow storm to spend the night together, their passion ignites. The next day, however, it’s back to business. The only way Keisha can save her family is to win a bet with the billionaire. But neither realized their hearts are part of the bargain…

Author Info:

Avery Flynn has three slightly-wild children, loves a hockey-addicted husband and is desperately hoping someone invents the coffee IV drip.

She fell in love with romance while reading Johanna Lindsey’s Mallory books. It wasn’t long before Avery had read through all the romance offerings at her local library. Needing a romance fix, she turned to Harlequin’s four books a month home delivery service to ease the withdrawal symptoms. That worked for a short time, but it wasn’t long before the local book stores’ staffs knew her by name.

Avery was a reader before she was a writer and hopes to always be both. She loves to write about smartass alpha heroes who are as good with a quip as they are with their *ahem* other God-given talents. Her heroines are feisty, fierce and fantastic. Brainy and brave, these ladies know how to stand on their own two feet and knock the bad guys off theirs.

Guest Post – In Too Deep

Tags

, ,

Join me this morning as Tracey Alvarez talks about her favorite kind of hero and gives us a peek at yummy West from In Too Deep.

*****

Choose your romance hero: A blue-collar works-with-his-hands type. Or, a white-collar rules-the-universe-from-his-Jaguar type. There’s a world of difference between each man but countless different ways to mix up the stereotypes.

Maybe it comes from my teenage years of reading multiple romances where the heroes were filthy rich and hired the heroine as a nanny or a secretary, but it takes a special white-collar hero to snag my interest. I admit to a long-standing lust for J.D Robb’s Roarke. I don’t think he’d appeal to me half as much if he didn’t have such a tough background which made him the man he is in the ‘In Death’ series.

Personally, I’m drawn to blue-collar heroes. Cowboys, construction workers (or the construction company owner—I’m not opposed to some wealth), cops, military men, and any man loaded with testosterone who’d be comfortable in a tool-belt. The kind of man who wouldn’t dream of calling a professional to fix the heroine’s leaky tap. A man with a smidgeon of dirt under his nails when he gets home from work, who takes seven minutes max to get ready in the morning. Who doesn’t own a tuxedo and wouldn’t know how to tie a bona-fide bow tie if his life depended on it.

West, from my first book, In Too Deep, proved a bit of a conundrum. On one hand he’s very much a blue-collar man. He manages a bar/hotel on Stewart Island—a rugged, harsh place where folk spend their whole lives carving out an existence in sometimes inhospitable conditions. West plays poker and rugby with his mates, and rides a motorbike. He’s also a pianist. He knows hair wax isn’t something derived from a bee-hive and he wears a button-down shirt to work—much to the hilarity of his mates. West knows how to fix the heroine’s leaky tap, but why waste time when he could call in a favor? Time mucking about with plumbing could be better spent coaxing Piper Harland into bed.

It’s the unexpected twists that make modern romance heroes so interesting. The construction worker who walks away from his family fortune because he wants to make it on his own merits. The CEO who teaches underprivileged kids basic carpentry skills and drives a classic Mustang, because who the heck wants to be seen driving a Jag.

I hope you enjoy reading about West in In Too Deep. He’s a slightly unconventional blue-collar hero, but he’s my kind of guy.

Author: Tracey Alvarez

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Release Date: 20th January 2014

Blurb:

She vowed never to return.

To save her brother from financial ruin, Piper Harland must do the one thing she swore she’d never do—return to the tiny island hometown where Ryan “West” Westlake crushed her heart. Piper is tough, resilient and a little wild—much like the remote and beautiful Stewart Island where she grew up. As a cop who’s part of the elite New Zealand Police National Dive Squad, bringing the dead back to their families still doesn’t stop the guilt she feels over her father’s drowning death. Now nine years later she’s obligated to return to a hostile community as the outsider, and forced to work with the man who was once her best friend and first lover.

She’s a risk he can’t take.

West is an Island man, through and through. As owner of the local pub, he lives and breathes the local community, and sure as hell can’t imagine living anywhere else. But most of all he refuses to ever fall for a woman like his flighty mother. He lost Piper once to give her the chance to fulfil her dreams of becoming a cop. But now she’s back for an unexpected six week visit to help her brother—his best mate. Maybe West wants her a little bit, maybe he can’t resist the temptation to tease and touch her, but can he fall in love with such a flight risk?

Saying goodbye for the second time might just destroy them both.

Excerpt:

“Hey,” she shouted. “I wanna talk to you.”

“Leave me alone, Piper,” West’s voice rose above the running water.

He hadn’t told her to “piss off” or “stop bitching at me and go back to the city.” Progress, right?

“Not this time.” Catching West in the shower meant she’d have a captive audience.

Knowing he wouldn’t have locked it, Piper walked inside and shut the door behind her. In her imagined scenario, the steam-filled room would modestly conceal West in the shower cubicle while she talked.

She hadn’t taken into account an extractor fan. No steamed up mirrors, no fogged up shower glass, just the whirr of the fan and the hiss of the water. Plus the tanned and very bare length of West’s body. She froze beside the door and gripped the doorknob, her heart hurtling into her throat.

Thank God he faced away from her. The sight of his toned ass turned her breathing into an asthmatic wheeze. She debated a quick, quiet exit, but tossed that idea out—West was on the back foot here, since she had clothes on. Besides, the tension etched across the muscles of his back indicated he knew she was already inside.

Just keep it above neck level, say what you need to say, and get out.

She cleared her throat. “That was a crappy way to talk to your mother, you made her cry.”

West pulled his head out of the spray and scrubbed water off his face. “The woman cries at a drop of a hat, it goes with her artistic temperament.”

Then he turned.

Holy guacamole. Piper nearly wrenched the doorknob off the door. Her brain must’ve missed the memo to keep her eyes above West’s neck because, hello—nicely shaped pecs, washboard flat abs, corded thigh muscles…and then her gaze skipped straight back up to his, er, expanding interest.

“True, buhht…” Her tongue unfurled to her knees when West rubbed a bar of soap over his chest, never taking his direct, blue gaze from her.

“So you barged in here to tell me I was rude to my mother?” Water sprayed over his shoulder, running down his body. His soapy hand slid from pecs to the trail of dark hair low on his belly. A happy, happy trail indeed.

“Well, I…” She licked dry lips, looked at anything other than where his hand headed, and found her mud-flecked, crimson-cheeked reflection instead.

So much for West’s awkwardness at being butt naked—she was the one exposed and vulnerable. Her excuses for being there suddenly seemed lame. Under the circumstances maybe his reaction to Claire was understandable, and though she told his mother she’d talk to him, nothing was so important the conversation couldn’t wait until after West had finished being all wet and hot and naked.

The creak of the shower door made her jump.

“Piper?” His voice, low and loaded with seduction, blazed through her.

West left the shower, water cascading off him and onto the tiled floor. She averted her gaze and turned her back, yanking on the doorknob again. It slipped through her damp fingers.

“Is this really about my mother or did you barge in here for something else?”

The spicy scent of his shower gel curled around her and the heat of his skin singed the fine hairs on the back of her arm, but still she grappled with the stubborn doorknob.

“Like because you’re very, very muddy,” he said.

His breath touched the back of her neck, droplets of water falling on her shoulder. “There’s a clean spot here, I think.”

A thumb traced the sensitive skin behind one ear and her vision blurred.

“And another here.” Warm lips trailed along the curve where the cords of her neck met shoulder.

“But on the whole—” his hand snaked around her waist, fingers spread wide across her lower belly.

Hot shivers arrowed through her pelvis and struck its target.

“—you’re a dirty girl who should hit the shower—” He pressed her hips back against his body, shifting so his erection wedged intimately between her Lyrca-covered cheeks, “—with me.”

Life, however, sometimes leads us down paths we never intended to take. From the very beginning, my parents encouraged my love of books. When a Grade One teacher suggested I wrote too many “thrillers,” my mother, an English teacher, said I could write – and read – whatever I wanted. My high school English teachers later backed her up on that. In university, I received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Anthropology. At the time it was a whim, but it’s amazing how much that little piece of paper has benefited me over the years. Researching the history of civilizations has led to many intriguing worldbuilding possibilities. When my children were babies and money was tight, my mother, grandmother, and husband bought me an electric typewriter for my birthday because they knew I was bored and wanted me to be happy. My mother became my very first critique partner, willingly reading pages and pages of manuscripts no one should ever have to suffer through. She researched markets for me, and introduced me to a journalist friend, who in turn introduced me to the Writers Federation of Nova Scotia. My brother and my brother-in-law introduced me to Thieves’ World, David Eddings, and Piers Anthony. My sister gave me my first computer. My grandmothers believed if something’s too hard, you aren’t working hard enough. My brother and sisters have all successfully followed their dreams, and my husband and two sons offer me proof every day that hard work is something to be embraced, not avoided. With these people behind me, how could I possibly stray from a path on which life seems to have planted them as guardrails? Synopsis: The Demon Lord has conquered the mortal world and sampled its pleasures. Now all he needs is to conquer the goddess who is meant to complete him. She, however, has other plans. Allia is sent by her goddess sisters to win the heart of the Demon Lord and make him her slave. But Allia soon discovers that the Demon Lord’s heart is not easily given, and that in order to win it, she must sacrifice her own. But when the government insists she renounce her American citizenship before the wedding, coupled with the lack of involvement by family and friends, Susanna’s heart begins to doubt whether this marriage is God’s plan for her.

Nathaniel would do anything for his bride-to-be. But he knows his position requires that she give up a lot to be with him. Her life will never be her own-right down to her very identity. When she travels home to St. Simon’s Island, Georgia, right before the wedding, Nathaniel fears she won’t return. Gathering his courage, he devises a plan to win his bride all over again, and together they seek out a kingdom to treasure above all.

I thought Once Upon a Prince was fantastic and I’m happy to see a follow-up for Susanna and Nate.  (There is a sequel Princess Ever After, which isn’t a continuation of their story like this one, but I will be reviewing that one in the future so keep an eye out.)  It’s was nice to see what happened to them after they fought to be able to get married – the changes that have to be made and the sacrifices that Susanna has to make to marry a king.  Like the first story, there is a little bit of political fighting in A March Bride but it wasn’t quite as prevalent as it was in OUaP, probably because this one is just a novella.

Instead we get two people who have fears about their future and how they address those.  It’s very sweet and very real.  Everyone has reason to doubt that they are doing the right thing when they make as momentous change as getting married, but for Susanna it is even bigger because it is on an international scale, in front of the press, and the world.  And once she moves forward it is even more final because she’s marrying the life-time leader of a country – to go from small-town Georgia to queen is a big step and it would make anyone cautious.

Nate loves his bride-to-be and we get to see that he is once again will to fight for her and her happiness.  He’s got a lot going on being king but he also knows the value of a good woman who will support him and love him for him.  He also knows that if she won’t give up this last thing to be queen, he’ll either lose her or the crown.  Once again, Hauk delivers Prince Charming (or I guess here it would be King Charming) and his actions to make Susanna happy are just wonderful.

It’s pretty much a must to have read Once Upon a Prince, but considering what a wonderful book it was I don’t think anyone should hesitate.  If you dream of meeting your own Prince Charming or loved the idea of Prince William and Kate, then this is definitely the series for you.  You can’t find a better hero than Nate … be prepared for him to once again sweep you off your feet.

cover41482-mediumHome is where her heart is

When Presley Christensen returns to Whiskey Creek with her little boy after two years away, she has completely changed her life. She’s made peace with her past and overcome the negative behavior that resulted from her difficult childhood. Now she’s back in the small town that was the closest thing to “home” she ever knew—the town where she can be with the sister who’s her only family.

There’s just one catch. Aaron Amos still lives in Whiskey Creek, at least until he moves to Reno to open a branch of the Amos brothers’ auto body shop. And no matter how hard she’s tried, Presley hasn’t been able to get over him. Seeing him again makes the longing so much worse. But she hopes she can get through the next few months, because she can’t fall back into his arms…or his bed. She’s come too far to backslide now. And there’s a secret she’s been guarding—a secret she’ll do anything to protect.

I’m going to say this and it breaks my heart, but I finally found a Whiskey Creek novel that I didn’t like more than the ones that came before it.  I love the idea of this book – that these two could turn their lives around and get their acts together.  And I totally understand why Presley didn’t tell Aaron that he was the father of her son.  And I even understand why Aaron is so confused by the way that Presley is treating him.  And in theory it all should make a really intriguing story … I just didn’t feel it this time.  Maybe I just need to go back and read Dylan and Cheyenne’s story, When Snow Falls, so that I can see how Presley and Aaron’s relationship was then to get a better feel for the way thing play out here.

Unfortunately we spent more time seeing Presley try to push Aaron away that they don’t actually spend quality time together to develop a good, solid relationship.  With just a couple of chapters to go she finally gives them a chance to date as a real couple but that time isn’t described because there are so few pages left.  I wish we’d had a chance to see them have a grown up relationship, I wanted to see Aaron actually develop feelings for Presley instead of being jealous or territorial.  I love the idea of his character so much, I wanted him to have a fantastic romance.

And I’m not sure where this plotline is going, but the side story with Cheyenne is so weird.  I cannot see this ending well for anyone and I’m not sure I understand why it is necessary.  I don’t want to spoil it for anyone that is going to read the story, but if you have to know go check out some of the Goodreads reviews because you’ll find out all about it in 2 seconds.  I’ll reserve judgment until I see what Novak has planned but I really was stunned when it came up.

I will give Novak credit – she is an amazing writer.  I may not have cared for this one but it is very smooth and has good flow.  I’ll definitely be looking for the next one because I know the series itself is fantastic.  And maybe that is the problem, I’m comparing a good story to the great ones that came before it.

Guest Post – Marked by Hades

Today’s guest post comes to us from Reese Monroe and gives us a look at her book Marked by Hades and the Bound by Hades series.  These heroines look like all sorts of fun!

*****

My street team Rock Star, Katrina Whittaker, sat down and chatted with Sadie and Yvonne, the heroines from the first two books in the Bound by Hades trilogy. Sounds like they had a great time…then again, Katrina’s all kinds of awesome so I’m not surprised at all!

~~~
Katrina: Firstly, can you tell us a little about yourselves?
Yvonne: Hi, Katrina. It’s nice to meet you. I’d shake your hand, but…well, I have my leather gloves on, so I shouldn’t turn you to dust, but I’d rather not risk it. Matter of fact, I feel like I’m sitting way to close to both of you. **moves seat back**
Anyway. I’m a twenty-something, 200-year-old, ex-demon…Oh gosh. Maybe I shouldn’t start out with that. Let’s put it this way. I’m still working to figure out just who…and what…I am. But one thing’s for certain, I got me an awesome Mate who’s helping me figure things out.
Sadie: Hey Kat, hope it’s okay if I call you Kat. Thanks for having us here. I’ve never been to Australia before. It’s wicked awesome. I want to see all of it. There’s so much I don’t know about this place!
Oh, but you asked about us. Hi, I’m Sadie. I show up in book 1, Forged by Fate. I was just turning eighteen and about to graduate from undergrad when he rocked my world. I had my life all planned out: Six figure a year job, prestige, consistency, stability…I was determined to show the world a freakishly strong, super smart orphan like me could make something of herself.
Little did I know what Fate had in store for me…
Kat: How did you meet and how did you feel about this initially?
Yvonne: Ohh, that’s an interesting story…after the fact, anyway. **she glances at Sadie** I kind of…held her hostage. But, in my defense, it was when I was a demon. Totally screwed in the head and totally betrayed by someone I thought I could trust.
I was immediately intrigued by her. Mostly her intense desire to get back to Theo—her Mate. I’d always wanted someone to love, and when she talked about her Mate, I could see what they had was an epic love. So, when I first met her, she was unconscious, and unconscious most of the time, but when she woke up…yeah, I was totally jealous of her.
Sadie: Yeah, that whole holding me hostage sucked rocks, but…it turned out okay. And look, now we’re totally related. I pretty much wanted to kill her when I first met her. But I didn’t have a Mavet dagger. Thankfully. Looking beyond my desire to kill her, I saw she was a different kind of demon—yeah, sounds weird, but it’s true. And look. I was right!
Kat: How has life been since the events that happened that brought you two together?
Yvonne: Whoa. It was a little bumpy getting to the end point with Justin, but I can’t say much to that, Reese might vaporize me in the final book if I give away too many spoilers, but I can say this…the journey, while very trying and heartbreaking at some points, was worth it. I’ve decided love is worth any risk!
Sadie: I can’t complain. I’m mated to a great guy, get to vanquish demons to Hades which keeps the humans safe—oh, I’m still getting used to the whole not being human anymore thing. **she giggles** One other thing I’m getting used to is being married and the whole meshing of two personalities under the same roof. You know…socks lying everywhere, rolling the toothpaste tube up…
Kat: How do you both feel about being Marked? And the men The Great One has chosen for you both?
Yvonne: First of all, I freaked out when my Mark surfaced. I had no memory of who—or what—I was, so it scared me. I thought it made me a target or something. I mean, I woke up on a bench, naked and had no memory other than my first name. And to top things off, any living thing I touch turned to dust…So when this thing showed up **she taps her shoulder** yeah, I freaked big time.
Once I learned what was happening…thanks to Sadie…and realized I was Mated to Justin, I was happy, actually. I wanted to belong to something…someone, and he was an amazingly kind, generous person, so I was glad.
He, on the other hand, not so happy about it…
Sadie: That’s true **Sadie laughs** Justin was pretty set against the whole Mate thing. I always warned him he couldn’t stop it, but he’s a stubborn bugger sometimes. When my Mark surfaced, I was pretty confused—not to mention sick—and when I researched it, I didn’t like what I found. Scared me what little I found on the symbol. Knowledge calms me. It’s how I’m geared, so all the “unknown” that came along with this mark didn’t help calm me down much. So, I kicked Theo’s ass the first time I met him.
Can you blame me? I mean, he just comes on into my nice, neat, planned-out world and blasts through it like a freaking cannon. I eventually fell for the big lug and love the road The Great One put us on together.
Kat: How did you feel when you first received your markings?
Yvonne: I had this wicked-awesome dream, but y’all are going to have to read about that. I was sick for a couple of days, and it pulsed a lot. I eventually figured out that it pulsed when I was near my Mate or when things…got intense with us.
Sadie: I was sick, too. Hot dreams, yes. But I hate the sick thing. I thought for sure I had cancer or something like that. I couldn’t wrap my brain around how a mark could just…appear like that. Then again, the Shomrei world doesn’t always work in a logical manner. Learned that big time! Still working on being okay with that, but I’m getting better.
Kat: What do you foresee your future to be like?
Yvonne: I may never be able to touch any other living thing, besides Justin, without turning it to dust, but being mated to a 911 year-old Shomrei Warrior lends to an adventurous life full of twists and turns.
Sadie: Adventure for sure. We’ve got Lucifer to deal with so, like Yvonne said, life won’t be dull in the Bradford household.
Kat: Upon seeing Yvonne after your first encounter what did you think Sadie?
Sadie: Oh, I freaked. Eventually I stabbed her. **Sadie looks sheepishly at Yvonne** Thankfully she forgave me.
Yvonne: After I kicked your butt!
Kat: Overall what are your thoughts on your newfound lives with these sexy hunks?
Yvonne: Hands off, sister, or these gloves’ll come off. **She smiles** Kidding! Let’s just say life is…fun. And I’m looking forward to eternity learning everything there is about him **winks**
Sadie: Ohhh, Yvonne **Sadie waggles her eyebrows** You’re naughty! I’d have to agree, though. My Theo waited for me—if you know what I mean—so we’ve got lots to make up for.
~~~~

Whoa. I’m wondering what Theo and Justin are thinking about this interview…Wonder if they’ll stop by to comment…

Thanks, Kat for interviewing the girls of Forged by Fate and Bound by Hades. This was fun. And thanks to Romantic Reads and Such for having us all here today to celebrate the release of Marked by Hades. It’s an exciting day, and I’m so happy Justin and Yvonne’s story is out there!

Happy Reading.

Guest Post – Her Desert Treasure & Risk of a Lifetime

Tags

, , ,

This morning I’m so very pleased to welcome Larie Brannick as she gets to do her very first guest post – how thrilling is that!?!?  So everyone be very welcoming and make sure that you stop by to say hi … and check out her new book, Her Desert Treasure.  It sounds like that perfect mix of romance and intrigue.

And to give you that little extra suspense boost, we’re also going to take a look at Risk of a Lifetime by Claudia Shelton.  Both look like fantastic books, promising to keep you on the edge of your seat on your way to HEA.

*****

My first guest blog! How exciting! If you had told me six months ago that not only would I sell my first manuscript (to a rockin’ publisher!), but that my first release day would be absolutely amazing, and I’d be invited to post guest blogs, I’d have said you were crazy.

When I started this whole writing thing, I had big daydreams about becoming the next Nora Roberts or something, but it didn’t take long to realize that success like that is not the norm. Even though my first story came to me pretty easily, it’s everything that you have to do after you finish the book that can get you down. Submissions, rejections, getting your hopes up only to find out your baby isn’t as cute as you thought it was!

Then one day, you get an email that changes your life. Someone actually shares your love and enthusiasm for your story, and they want to share it with the rest of the world. Just like you do. I’ve gotta say, that’s a pretty great day. 🙂  And after a few months of editing, proofreading, cover art samples, and the million other details that go into preparation for publishing, you get to see your baby in its graduation cap and gown, ready to take on the world!

Everyone has a milestone or two that stays with them for a lifetime. For me, my very first release day was one of those milestones. I’ll never forget the thrill of seeing my book on my favorite websites, reading wonderful reviews, and the overall giddiness of achieving a goal.

Thank you for joining me on this journey! And if you’ve had a chance to read my debut novel, Her Desert Treasure, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. 🙂

Guest Post – Bethany Hensel

The New Adult genre is taking the world by storm and today we get to visit with author Bethany Hensel as she talks about the genre and how her book Unstoppable brings a little twist for her readers to enjoy.

*****

Thanks so much for having me here on your incredible site, Julie! It’s such an honor. Today I thought I’d talk about my sexy thriller, Unstoppable, as well as the genre New Adult. Trust me, they relate. 🙂 So here goes!

I think there’s a bit of a misconception that New Adult is “sexed up YA” or is just a story with characters that are in college. But New Adult is definitely not the former and it’s so much more than the latter. I mean, take the very words: New Adult. You are a brand-spankin’ new adult and as such, you have all sorts of new challenges and thrills and excitement thrown at you – and without the safety net of parents or teachers. It’s why I love the genre so much…it’s just so raw, dramatic, emotional and, at times, wonderfully funny. I didn’t write Unstoppable with the idea in mind that it was New Adult. When I started writing it, New Adult didn’t even exist. But, as luck and timing would have it, during my revision process, New Adult blew up and it blew up big. I loved reading about characters who had complex, sometimes dangerous, pasts; who were awkward and funny, who wanted love as much as they feared it. I was like, Yes! These are my kind of books! And, surprisingly, sort of like the book I was just finishing up revising!

Unstoppable is about Derek Archer, whose life is finally beginning. He’s about to graduate high school, land the job he’s always wanted and move in with the girl he’s always loved. It’s the biggest transition period for him. And of course, that’s when everything goes wrong! Unstoppable isn’t a romance, it’s definitely a mystery and thriller, a story of not only who dunnit, but why. I haven’t seen many sub-genres in NA, but here’s hoping you enjoy this sexy thriller!

Now, the race is on, and Derek has only three days to right a terrible wrong. With the help of a childhood friend with a penchant for high-tech espionage, they investigate every lead, never imagining their search would take them deep into the heart of a seemingly perfect family, where old ghosts, bitter lies, and agonizing betrayal all collide. It’s then, with the lives of everyone he holds dear in the balance, Derek discovers just how unimaginable the truth can be…and how unstoppable. Full of twists and turns, this sexy New Adult thriller is The Bourne Identity meets Baz Lurhmann’s Romeo and Juliet…expect action, expect danger, expect love.

Author Bio:

Almost every author’s bio states they’ve been writing since they learned how to read. It’s what they’ve always wanted to do. Well, my journey wasn’t so straight and narrow. I was a nurse for over twenty years and hold a bachelor’s degree in science with a major in biology. So as you can see, my career path had originally gone in the opposite direction. I didn’t discover my passion for the craft until after I’d had my son and decided to work part-time.

I’ve always loved to read but had never read a paranormal romance. Then one night at work on break, I began reading Karen Marie Moning’s Spell of the Highlander. I couldn’t believe what I’d been missing, and I immediately fell in love with the genre.

I wanted to write like that. I wanted to create worlds where others could find the same escape and fascination I did when I read my first sensual paranormal romance.

And I hope that’s what I’ve accomplished in my work. Please dive in, hold on tight, and enjoy the adventure. Just be careful in the dark—you might find more than you expected waiting for you there.

Jessica Lee lives in the southeastern United States with her husband and son. She loves writing and can’t wait for that quiet time each day when her son is in school, and she can get lost in another place and world with the fantastical, sexy creatures in her head.

She’s a member of Romance Writers of America, FF&P, and Carolina Romance Writers.

Book Synopsis:

Guerino Lombardi’s world just went to shit. Vampire and second in command of the Warriors of the Enclave, he’s put everything on the line to save his best friend from what has to be the worst blow a man can take. Kenric, his friend and master of the Enclave, has a daughter, something believed impossible in the vampire world, and word has it she wants her father and his Enclave dead. Guerin is determined to protect Kenric, keeping the secret from him until he knows for sure if this daughter really exists and if she wants revenge.

Eve Devonshire is a woman hiding in plain sight. Not completely human, but not quite a vampire, she’s accepted by neither race but is more powerful than either one. Her life has consisted of half-truths and disguises, never belonging or living in one place for any length of time. But now some have heard rumors of her existence and want nothing more than to trap her and dissect her like a lab rat.

To stay alive, Eve can’t trust anyone, including the alpha vampire with midnight eyes and a thirst for pain and submission. With her enemies nipping at her heels, Eve has Guerin cornered, and both are determined to get the answers they’re looking for or die trying…if they can fight their desires long enough.
