For fans of Elin Hilderbrand and Nancy Thayer, New York Times bestselling author Brenda Novak’s newest standalone novel about friendship, family and the ties that bind and challenge us follows three friends as they escape to a coastal Florida town for the summer.

Marlo Madsen has just been through a global pandemic that turned her lifeβ€”and the lives of almost everyone she knowsβ€”upside down. Her beloved father has died from COVID. Helping her mother, who has MS, handle his estate means returning to the small coastal Florida town where she was raised.

Having just left her job as a divorce attorneyβ€”which paid well but showed her too much of the worst in peopleβ€”she’s invited two friends to join her for a seaside summer. The two friends are also facing huge life changes after the worsening California wildfires took everything from them, and need to decompress and recuperate. And travel has long been forbidden, so they are beyond appreciative for the ability to escape.

Unfortunately, a restful summer doesn’t seem to be in the cards, especially when Marlo learns about a special provision in her father’s will that reveals he has a love child with Rosemarie, the housekeeper who’s worked for the family for years. Rosemarie’s son was around while Marlo was growing up, but she never suspected a thing. Nobody did. And once the news is revealed, the fallout will cause waves big enough to topple two families and a whole community.

CHAPTER ONE

Teach Island looked exactly the same as Marlow Madsen remembered it. Since the entire world had been disrupted by the pandemic, the comfort and familiarity of this place nearly brought tears to her eyes. Part of that was how strongly she associated it with her father. John β€œTiller” Madsen, who’d gotten his nickname because of his love for sailing, had died a month ago. But the island had long been his escape from the rat race of Washington, DC, where he’d served as a United States senator for thirty years.

β€œI can’t believe I’m back. Finally,” Marlow said as she rolled down the passenger window to let in some fresh air.

Part of the archipelago of forty-five hundred islands off the coast of Florida, Teach was only seven square miles. Marlow loved its homey, small-town atmosphere. She also loved its white sand beaches and its motley collection of bars, restaurants, bait-and-tackle stores and gift shops, most of which, at least in the older section where they were now, had kitschy decor. Because the island was named after Edward Teach, or Blackbeard, one of the most famous pirates to operate in this part of the world in the early eighteenth century, there was pirate stuff all over. A black skull-and-crossbones flag hung on a pole in front of the most popular bar, which was made to look like a colonial-era tavern and was named Queen Anne’s Revenge after Blackbeard’s ship.

In addition to the Blackbeard memorabilia, there was the regular sea-themed stuffβ€”large anchors or ship’s wheels stuck in the ground here and there, fishing nets draped from the eaves of stores and cafΓ©s, and lobsters, crabs and other ocean creatures painted on wooden or corrugated metal sides. Her parents had a house in Georgia, a true Southern mansion, as well as their condo in Virginia for when her father had to be in Washington. But this was where they’d always spent the summers.

Now that Tiller was gone, her mother was talking about selling the other residences and moving here permanently. Marlow hated the sense of loss that inspired the forever change, but since Seaclusionβ€”her father’s name for the beach houseβ€”had always been her favorite of their homes, she was also relieved that her mother planned to keep it. This was the property she hoped to inherit one day; she couldn’t imagine it ever being out of the family. And after what so many people had experienced with the fires in California, where she’d been living since she graduated college, and all the hurricanes in recent years that had plagued Florida, she had reason to be grateful the house was still standing.

β€œSounds like you’ve missed the place.” Reese Cantwell, who’d been sent to pick up her and her two friends, had grown even taller since Marlow had seen him last. His hands and feet no longer looked disproportionate to the rest of his body. She remembered that his older brother, Walker, had also reminded her of a pup who hadn’t quite grown into his large paws and wondered what Walker was doing these days.

β€œIt’s a welcome sight for all three of us,” Aida Trahan piped up from the back. β€œThree months by the sea should change everything.”

Claire Fernandez was also in the back seat, both of them buried beneath the luggage that wouldn’t fit in the trunk. They’d met at LAX and flown into Miami together. β€œHere’s hoping,” she said. β€œEven if it doesn’t, I’m looking forward to putting my toes in the water and my butt in the sand.”

β€œYou’ll get plenty of opportunities for that here,” Reese said.

Claire needed the peace and tranquility and a chance to heal. She’d lost her home in the fires that’d ravaged Malibu last August. To say nothing of the other dramas that’d plagued her this past year.

Marlow looked over at their driver. Apparently, since her father’s death, Reese had been helping out around the estate, in addition to teaching tennis at the club. His mother, Rosemary, had been their housekeeper since well before he was bornβ€”since before Marlow was even born. Marlow was grateful for the many years of service and loyalty Rosemary had given the family, especially now that Tiller had died. It was wonderful to have someone she trusted watch out for her mother. Eileen had multiple sclerosis, which sometimes made it difficult for her to get around.

β€œLooks as casual as I was hoping it would be.” Claire also lowered her window as Reese brought them to the far side of the island and closer to the house. Situated on the water, Seaclusion had its own private beach, as well as a three-bedroom guesthouse and a smaller apartment over the garage where Rosemary had lived before moving into the main house after Tiller died so she could be available if Eileen needed anything during the night.

β€œThere are some upscale shops and restaurants where we’re going, if you’re in the mood for spending money,” Marlow told them.

β€œWhen have I not been in the mood to shop?” Aida joked.

β€œYou don’t have access to Dutton’s money anymore,” Claire pointed out. β€œYou need to be careful.”

Claire had lost almost everything. She had reason to be cautious. Aida wasn’t in the best situation, either, and yet she shrugged off the concern. β€œI’ll be okay. I didn’t walk away empty-handed, thanks to my amazing divorce attorney.”

Marlow always felt uncomfortable when Dutton came up, and sometimes couldn’t believe it wasn’t more uncomfortable for them. The way Claire and Aida had met was remarkable, to say the least. It was even more remarkable that they’d managed to become friends. But Marlow twisted around and smiled as though she didn’t feel the sudden tension so she could acknowledge Aida’s compliment. Although Marlow was only thirty-four, she’d been a practicing attorney for ten years. She’d jumped ahead two grades when she was seven, which had enabled her to finish high school early and start college at sixteen. A knack for difficult negotiations had led her to a law degree and from there she’d gone into family law, something that had worked out well for her. Her practice had grown so fast she’d considered hiring another attorney to help with the caseload.

She probably would’ve done that, if not for the pandemic, which had shut down every aspect of her life except work, making her realize that becoming one of the best divorce attorneys in Los Angeles wasn’t everything it was cracked up to be. No matter how much money she made, she didn’t enjoy dealing with people who were so deeply upset, and the richer, more famous the client, the more acrimonious the divorce. She hoped she’d never have to wade through another one. If a marriage worked, it could be wonderful. Her parents had proved that. But after what she’d witnessed with other people since passing the bar, she was beginning to believe Tiller and Eileen were the exception.

β€œAll I did was make Dutton play fair,” Marlow said. β€œBut at least you have some money you can use to get by while you decide what to do from here.”

β€œI liked being a trophy wife,” Aida grumbled. β€œI’m not sure I’m cut out for anything else.”

Like so many in LA, she’d been an aspiring actress at one time, but her career had never taken off. After she’d married Dutton, she’d spent more time at the tennis club, where she and Marlow had met, than trying out for any auditions.

β€œDon’t say that,” Marlow told her. β€œYou can do a lot more than look pretty.”

Claire remained conspicuously quiet. She’d been subdued since they left, so subdued that Marlow was beginning to wonder if something was wrong.

β€œWe’ll see.” Aida shrugged off the compliment as readily as she had the warning. β€œBut before I have to make the really hard decisions, I deserve a break. So where’s the expensive part of the island again?”

Reese chuckled. β€œWe’re almost there.”

β€œWe’ll be able to play tennis, too,” Marlow told her. β€œThe club’s only a mile from the house. And Reese is our resident pro.”

β€œNo way! You play tennis?” Aida’s voice revealed her enthusiasm.

β€œEvery day,” he replied.

β€œCan he beat you?” Aida asked Marlow.

β€œHe was just a kid the last time we played, and he could take me about half the time even then. I doubt he’ll have any problem now.”

β€œI can see why you talked us out of renting a car,” Claire said, finally entering the conversation. β€œConsidering the size of this place…”

β€œLike I told you before,” Marlow said, β€œmost people walk or ride a bike.”

β€œYou only need a car if you’re going off island,” Reese chimed in. He was driving them in Eileen’s Tesla.

Marlow was anxious to ask how her mother was doing but decided to hold off. If she questioned him while her friends were in the car, she’d probably get the standard β€œFine.” But she wasn’t looking for a perfunctory answer. She wanted the truth. What he’d seen and heard recently. He was the one who’d been here. Marlow hadn’t been able to visit, not even when her father died. Thanks to the pandemic, they hadn’t been able to give him the funeral he deserved, either.

Reese glanced into the rearview mirror. β€œAre the three of you staying all summer?”

Marlow suspected he was hoping Aida, in particular, would be on the island for a while. Although Aida was thirty-six, fourteen years older than he was, she was a delicate blonde with big blue eyes. The way she dressed and accessorized, she turned heads, especially male heads, wherever she went.

β€œWe are,” Aida said, and the subtle hint of flirtation in her voice told Marlow that she’d picked up on Reese’s interest.

β€œWe have some big decisions to make in the coming months,” Marlow said, hoping to give Reese a hint that this wasn’t the opportunity he might think it was. Aida was on the rebound. She needed to put her life back together, not risk her heart on a summer fling.

β€œWhat kind of decisions?” he asked, naturally curious.

Claire answered for her. β€œLike what we’re going to do from here on. We’re all starting over.”

Reese’s eyebrows shot up as he looked at Marlow. β€œMeaning…what? You won’t be returning to LA?”

β€œI’m not sure,” she said. β€œI sold my condo and closed my practice before I left, just in case.”

His jaw dropped. β€œReally? But your mom said you’re one of the most highly sought-after attorneys in Los Angeles.”

No doubt her mother talked about her all the time. She’d heard a few things about Reese’s family, too, including the fact that he hadn’t finished school because he’d let partying come between him and a degree. But Marlow didn’t know Reese that well. She’d spent more time with his much older brother, Walker, when they were growing up. β€œIt’s not that it wasn’t working out. It was. I’m just…done with divorce.”

He turned down the rap music he’d had playing since they got in. β€œHave you told your mother?”

β€œNot yet. I was afraid she’d try to talk me out of it. I know it’s sort of crazy to walk away from what I had going. Not many lawyers would do that. But after being quarantined for so long, working with people who almost always behaved their worst, I’m finished suffering through other people’s emotional turmoil.”

β€œCan’t say as I blame you,” Aida agreed. β€œI feel so bad about how Dutton treated you.”

Aida’s ex hadn’t just called Marlow names. He’d gotten her cell phone number from Aida, claiming he wanted to negotiate directly, and then proceeded to threaten her on more than one occasion. β€œWe can all be glad Dutton’s out of our lives.”

β€œAmen,” Aida said, but again Claire said nothing.

They reached the gap in the shrubbery that signaled the beginning of her parents’ drive, and Reese turned into Seaclusion.

β€œLook at this!” Aida exclaimed. β€œIt’s a whole compound.”

Reese parked in the detached four-car garage. β€œWelcome home,” he said with a grin.

Marlow had her carry-on with her, but when she went to the trunk to get the rest of her luggage, Reese insisted he’d bring it in.

She thanked him, put her bag down and, eager to see her mother, hurried to the house.

Rosemary was waiting on the stoop, where her mother would normally be. β€œIt’s good to see you, Marlow.”

β€œThanks, Rosemary. It’s good to see you, too. Is Mom okay?”

At fifty-five, Rosemary was five years younger than Eileen and tall and thin, like her two sons. They’d gotten their good looks from herβ€”didn’t resemble their father at all, who wasn’t around anymore. Marlow could recall him showing up at the Atlanta house drunk and bellowing for Rosemary to β€œget her ass home.” It wasn’t any surprise to Marlow that the relationship hadn’t lasted. He’d abandoned the family when Reese was four or five.

β€œShe’s fine. A little tired.” Although Rosemary smiled, she seemed anxious and uptight herself. Was it because of Eileen? Was she worse off than Marlow had been told?

β€œIs it anything to be concerned about?” Marlow pressed.

β€œNo. She was so excited to see you that she couldn’t sleep last night. That’s all. She’s in her room resting if you want to go in.”

Anxious to reassure herself that nothing more serious was going on, Marlow introduced Aida and Claire to Rosemary, and while Rosemary led them to the guesthouse, where Reese was taking the luggage, Marlow went inside. β€œMom?” she called as she moved through the living room.

β€œIn here!” her mother called back.

Marlow’s stomach knotted as she reached the master bedroom and swung the door open wider. It was a beautiful day outside, not a cloud in the sky, yet the shades were drawn, making it dark and cool.

As soon as she reached the bed, she bent to kiss her mother’s paper-thin cheek. β€œI’m so glad to see you again.”

Eileen’s hands clutched her wrists. β€œLet me look at you. It’s been too long.”

β€œWho could’ve guessed a pandemic would come between us? That wasn’t something I even considered when I went so far from home.”

Once her eyes adjusted to the light, Marlow could see that the room hadn’t changed. Her father’s watch glimmered on the dresser, his slippers waited under the side chair and his clothes hung neatly in the closet as though he might walk through the door at any moment. Her mother hadn’t done anything with his personal property. That meant Marlow would have to deal with it, but she was actually grateful Eileen had waited. Touching his belongings was their only remaining connection to him, their only chance to say goodbye, and now they could do that together.

β€œAre you hungry?” her mother asked. β€œRosemary made tea for you and your friends.”

Marlow sat on the edge of the bed. Eileen had thick dark hair and bottle green eyesβ€”both of which Marlow had inheritedβ€”and looked good despite being so ill. But she was pale today and had lost significant weight. β€œThat sounds wonderful,” Marlow said.

β€œI thought your friends might enjoy it. And I know how much you like clotted cream. When we were in London with your father several years ago, that was all you wanted to eat.”

The twinkle in Eileen’s eyes made Marlow feel slightly encouraged, until her mother winced as she adjusted her position. Eileen had to be feeling terrible, or she’d be up and around and asking to meet Aida and Claire.

β€œAre you having another attack?” Marlow asked. Her mother’s disease came in waves, or what they called β€œattacks.” Sometimes she grew worse for no clear reasonβ€”she didn’t do or eat anything differentβ€”and then she improved just as mysteriously. Although the steady decrease in her functionality attested to the fact that each attack took a little more from her…

β€œI must be. But don’t worry about me. It’s…more of the same. How was your flight?”

The lump that swelled in Marlow’s throat made it difficult to swallow. She’d already lost her beloved father. Was she going to lose her mother this year, too? The probability of Eileen’s dying had hung over their heads ever since she was diagnosed twenty-six years ago, so it’d come as a total shock that Tiller had died first. He’d never been sick a day in his lifeβ€”until he got shingles. Then he’d spent five weeks in bed and simply didn’t wake up one morning. According to the autopsy, a blood clot had formed and traveled to his lungs.

β€œThe flight was crowded and miserable,” she answered. β€œBut aren’t all flights that way?”

β€œYou should’ve come first class.”

Marlow thought about her decision to sell her place and close her practice but decided not to mention it until later. Eileen’s father had been a steel baron; she’d married into money, as well. She’d never known what it was like to struggle. Marlow hadn’t, either, but she was out in the world and much more cognizant of the difficulties faced by those who didn’t have quite as much. β€œI didn’t want to ask Aida and Claire to spend the extra money. You know what happened to Claire.”

β€œYes. The poor thing. I’m so glad she had insurance to cover the rebuild. The fires in California have been awful. I’ve seen them on the news.” Eileen lifted her head to look toward the door. β€œWhere are your friends?”

β€œRosemary’s helping them get settled in the guesthouse.”

β€œI can’t wait to meet them.”

β€œThey’re grateful to you for letting them come home with me. But with the way you’re feeling, maybe I should’ve come alone—”

β€œNo, no,” she broke in. β€œThey both needed a place to recoup, as you said. And having them here won’t hurt me. New friends might help fill the terrible void I’ve felt since Tiller…” Her voice cracked.

Marlow squeezed her hand, wondering if it was the emotional toll of losing Tiller that’d gotten the best of Eileen, rather than MS. β€œI miss him, too,” she whispered.

Her mother brought Marlow’s hand to her cheek. β€œIt’ll be good to have you here for practical reasons, too. I think there’s something that has to be done with the estate.”

β€œWhat’s that?” Marlow asked in surprise.

β€œI don’t know. Samuel Lefebvre’s been calling me, trying to get me to come meet with him, but I told him you’re the one to talk to. I can’t face it.”

Sam was her father’s attorney and had been since Marlow could remember. He’d written her a character reference when she applied to Stanford, since he’d graduated from there himself, which was how she’d landed on the opposite coast. β€œI can handle it. It shouldn’t be hard. Most, if not all, of Dad’s estate will pass directly to you. Maybe he left me a few trinkets.”

β€œI’m sure he did. But Sam acts as though there’s business at hand, so he must need something.”

β€œYou know Sam. He’s fastidious, always in a hurry to wrap things up. It won’t be a problem.”

A ghost of her mother’s former smile curved her lips. β€œYou’re so capable. You’ve always been capableβ€”just like your father.”

Marlow heard Rosemary come into the house with Aida and Claire. β€œShould I wait to introduce my friends to you until after we eat?”

β€œMaybe that would be best,” Eileen said. β€œIt’ll give me the chance to rest a bit longer.”

β€œOf course. There’s no rush.”

β€œI can’t wait to spend more time with you. It’s comforting to know we have the whole summer.”

β€œIt is.” Marlow hugged her mother, breathing in the welcome scent of her perfume before going out to join Aida and Claire in the dining room, where Rosemary had put a tea caddy filled with small sandwiches, crackers with herb spread, homemade scones and chocolate-covered strawberries. The clotted cream was in small dishes at the side of each plate.

β€œLooks delicious. I don’t think anyone in the UK could do it better.”

β€œThen I did it right,” Rosemary joked.

When Marlow sat down, she halfway expected Reese to join them, since she knew he was on the property, but he didn’t come in. As generously as her family had treated Rosemary and her boys, there’d always been a distinction between the family and the help. Marlow supposed that, in many situations like this, it was inevitable: there was a natural hierarchy when it came to employment.

β€œReese has gotten so tall,” she remarked to Rosemary, helping herself to a cucumber-and-cream-cheese sandwich.

β€œHe’s a handsome man,” Aida said.

Marlow shot her friend a warning look but didn’t dare say anything in front of Reese’s mother, who seemed to take the compliment at face value. β€œHe’s six-four, as tall as his brother now,” she said proudly.

β€œWhat’s Walker been doing these days?” Marlow asked.

Rosemary used a towel to hold the hot teapot with both hands. β€œHe’s living here on the island now.”

Marlow paused, her sandwich halfway to her mouth. β€œHe left Atlanta to come here permanently? When?”

β€œAs soon as he heard about COVID. Poor guy’s always felt he needs to be there for me and Reese,” she said with an affectionate chuckle. β€œI guess it’s no wonder since, growing up, he had to be the man of the house.”

Eileen hadn’t mentioned that Walker had moved to Teach, but at thirty-six, he probably didn’t come to the house much. β€œWhat part of the island does he live on?” Marlow asked. β€œHe’s not staying above the garage, is he?”

β€œNo, Reese is there now. Walker bought the cottage down by the cove. It’s not very big, but the setting is magnificent. I’ve never seen prettier sunsets than the ones I see from his front porch.”

Marlow liked the cove, too. The beach there was small and completely cut off from the other beaches, so it was often overlooked by tourists, which made it feel almost as private as the beach her family owned. β€œWhat does he do for a living?”

β€œHe’s the chief of police.”

Marlow sat taller. β€œThe chief of police?”

Rosemary shrugged off her surprise. β€œIt sounds loftier than it is. There are only two other officers on the force.”

β€œBut…how’d that happen? Last I heard, he was a street cop in Atlanta.” She remembered someone telling her that a friend had talked him into going into the academy. That had been a while agoβ€”probably a decadeβ€”but Walker’s ascent still seemed quick.

β€œThis is your oldest son?” Claire interrupted.

β€œIt is,” Rosemary replied before answering Marlow. β€œHe didn’t want to be separated from me or his brother during the pandemic, so he kept checking for jobs on the islandβ€”and he found one.”

β€œThe chief of police quit or was fired or something?” Claire asked.

β€œNo, Walker got on as a regular officer first,” Rosemary clarified. β€œBut when the chief retired, he took over.”

β€œDo you have a daughter-in-law, too?” Aida asked. β€œOr any grandbabies?”

β€œNot yet,” Rosemary replied. β€œI bug Walker about finding a wife all the time, but he just laughs it off and tells me you can’t hurry love.”

β€œMaybe Reese will be the one to give you grandbabies,” Aida said.

β€œHe’s got some growing up to do first,” Rosemary said and headed into the kitchen.

Marlow and Claire both gave Aida a pointed stare.

β€œWhat?” she said, lifting her well-manicured hands as though she’d done nothing wrong. β€œHe’s twenty-two. It’s not as though he’s underage.”

Rosemary reappeared before they could say anything further. β€œWalker’s here,” she announced. β€œI needed a few things for the soup I’m making for dinner tonight, and he said he’d grab them for me.”

A knock sounded on the door. After Rosemary opened it, Marlow could hear Walker say, β€œHere you go. You’ll find some of those dark chocolate–covered almonds you like in the bag, too.”

Marlow could see a slice of Rosemary as she accepted the sack he handed her. β€œThank you.”

β€œNo problem. I’ll see you later.”

β€œWalker?” his mother said, calling him back. β€œMarlow’s home if you’d like to come in and say hello.”

There was a slight pause, which indicated he wasn’t thrilled with the idea. Marlow could understand why. They hadn’t exactly been close, at least not during their teenage years. But he eventually said, β€œFine. But just for a minute. I have to get back to work.”

PROLOGUE

It was never comfortable for people when four sets of viΒolet eyes zeroed in on them with the level of intensity the Hathaway sisters could manage.

A fact the half sisters had learned when they’d first met at summer camp, thanks to their families, who’d been careΒful to give the girls the opportunity to meet each other, without the pressure of having to become friends or even real sisters.

But sisters they had become that first day at the age of thirteen. In each other, they’d found kindred spirits. Not just in the unusual color of their eyes, but in the depths of their passions, and in their driving need to forge family out of the fragments their father had left behind when he’d impregΒnated all their mothers at different points in the same year.

So that, as adults, though they lived in different parts of the country, they were the best of friends. Sisters, through and through, and when Georgie had informed them of Grandpa Jack’s heart attack in Jasper Creek, the rest had rushed to the small Oregon town to see what they could do.

Grandpa Jack looked at each of them with his usual squinty-eyed suspicion. Though their father had never made any effort to be a part of his daughters’ lives, Grandpa Jack had always made it clear he’d be there if needed.

But not to expect him to be cheerful about it.

β€œDidn’t all have to come,” he grumbled, shifting in his hospital bed.

β€œWell, of course we did. And we’ll stay until you’re on the mend,” Teddy said, patting his hand. The squinty-eyed suspicion became a full-fledged scowl as he pulled his hand away.

While Teddy was all about gestures of affection, Grandpa Jack was decidedly not.

Which made the fact Georgie was the only local grandΒdaughter a blessing as she shared the discomfort with such goings-on. He turned his glare to her. β€œDidn’t have to call them.”

Georgie shrugged.

β€œShe was right to,” Joey said firmly, meeting Grandpa Jack’s scowl with her own. β€œWe won’t hear another comΒplaint about it. A waste of time. You know how stubborn we are.”

Grandpa Jack grunted.

Elliot smirked. β€œWonder where we got it.”

A nurse knocked on the door, then poked her head in. β€œSorry, girls, it’s time to head home. Visiting hours are over.”

β€œGirls,” Elliot muttered under her breath with a considΒerable amount of disdain for the word.

But Teddy pressed a kiss to Grandpa Jack’s wrinkled forehead, Elliot touched his shoulder, and Georgie and Joey hovered at the door until they all left the room, chorusing goodbyes.

β€œI hate leaving him all alone,” Teddy said as Elliot linked arms with her. Teddy reached out and took Joey’s arm.

β€œHe’ll be home soon enough,” Joey reassured her. She gave Georgie an apologetic shrug, then linked arms with her too, so they were a unit as they walked out of the hosΒpital into the cool spring evening.

β€œHe’s not going to let you fuss over him, Teddy. It isn’t his way,” Georgie said pragmatically as they walked to her truck.

Teddy frowned. β€œI think you misjudge my tenacity.”

Elliot’s eyebrows winged up. β€œDo we?”

Teddy wrinkled her nose, but didn’t argue with Elliot.

β€œI found an Airbnb closer to the hospital,” Georgie said, sounding tired as she climbed into the driver’s seat. β€œI knew this wouldn’t be a quick visit and we’d need more room than Felix and I have.” Georgie had grown up with her half brother right here in Jasper Creek.

The four sisters climbed into Georgie’s truck. Whatever belongings they’d packed were strapped into the bed of the truck from when Georgie had picked Joey and Teddy up at the airport this afternoon, after Elliot had driven down from Portland.

Georgie drove onto the highway, and it was only about fifteen minutes later she parked in front of a pretty little farmhouse just outside of Jasper Creek.

β€œThis place is amazing,” Teddy said.

β€œMuch better taken care of than the main house at Grandpa Jack’s property,” Georgie returned.

The women got out, grabbed what they’d need for the night, then headed inside.

β€œI’ll make us some dinner,” Teddy said, already movΒing for the kitchen.

β€œThe host said she left some things for us to eat when we arrived,” Georgie replied, dropping her stuff in the front room.

They all descended on the kitchen, which was quaint and old-fashionedβ€”something that suited all four women to the bone. On the table were a variety of baked goods.

β€œI found a teapot and some tea,” Teddy said.

β€œScones and sweet rolls for dinner sounds good to me,” Joey said, already unwrapping the plate of baked goods and digging in.

Elliot found plates and set the table, shoving one at Joey as she’d already plowed through three-fourths of a scone.

β€œDo you think Grandpa Jack is stressed about the ranch? And that’s what caused this?” Teddy asked, fiddling with the stove.

β€œI think he’s an old man who eats poorly and smokes cigars regularly. But…” Georgie sighed.

β€œHe’s been talkΒing about selling off the last piece of land to Colt West next door. He’d keep the cabin and about an acre around it, but the rest would go to Colt.”

β€œEven the main house?” Joey asked, as she licked crumbs from her fingers.

β€œYou could hardly call it that these days. It’s falling apart at the seams.”

Teddy frowned. β€œThat’s just not right.”

Georgie shrugged. β€œHe hasn’t lived in that house in deΒcades. He’s a single, old, grumpy man. He’s finally acceptΒing he can’t really take care of the ranch. Why not sell?”

β€œIt’s our legacy,” Joey said. Then she looked around the table. β€œIsn’t it?”

β€œIt’s our absent father’s legacy,” Elliot returned. β€œAsΒsuming he’s still alive.”

All eyes turned to Georgie, who was the only one who’d ever had any contact with Mickey Hathaway. She lifted her shoulders. β€œFar as I know.”

Silence filled the room until Teddy’s teakettle began to whistle. She poured tea for everyone, then took a seat at the kitchen table. As far as she was concerned, this was all fate. The timing, the chance of all four of them comΒing here at a point in their lives where they got to decide what came next.

β€œWe’ve always talked about how much we wanted to live there, so why don’t we?”

β€œWhy don’t we what?” Joey replied, mouth full with her last bite of scone.

β€œLive there. Do what we all love to do. Put together some kind of…business. Honey, eggs,” Teddy said, pointing to herself. β€œProduce,” she said, pointing to Joey. β€œCeramics.” Elliot’s specialty. β€œOur sweet Georgie’s baked goods,” she said, grinning at Georgie’s negative reaction to being called sweet.

β€œMost of us are already selling our wares anyway. Why don’t we do it here? The four of us.”

It would be more than the year her mother wanted, more than just learning some independence. It would be actually, hopefully permanently, forging that independence. Well, with her sisters. Which suited Teddy better. She didn’t want to be alone. She wanted to be a part of a family. Her family.

β€œYou’d move here all the way from Maine?” Joey asked dubiously. β€œLeave your mother?”

Teddy sniffed. β€œI can leave my mother.” Then she wrinΒkled her nose. Subterfuge wasn’t her strong suit.

β€œShe wants me to move out anyway.”

β€œWhy?” her sisters demanded, offended on her behalf.

β€œShe thinks I need a year of independence. To find my own way. Apparently twenty-five is too old to have always lived with your mother, according to her.”

When none of her sisters argued, she glared at them. β€œYou agree with her?”

Elliot shrugged. β€œI don’t disagree with her.”

β€œWell, anyway, this would solve that, wouldn’t it? We can fix up the house. I’m sure some people need bee reΒmoval around here, so I’ll start a new hive. Buy new chickΒens. Elliot can drive her ceramics van down here. Joey, you could start the farm of your dreams with local produce and flowersβ€”a brand-new challenge, all yours. Georgie, you can design the baking kitchen you’ve been planning since childhood. And we’ll be close enough to Grandpa to help himβ€”and far enough away he won’t beat us away with sticks.”

They looked at Teddy, varying looks of consideration and concern on their faces. But as the idea took shape in Teddy’s mind, she knew it was exactly right. This wasn’t some new dream out of left field; it was an old dream.

And if she had to be independent, why not make that old dream a reality?

β€œWe always wanted to live in one place. Like a real famΒily,” Teddy said. She would have reached out and grabbed all their hands if she had three herself. As it was, she only looked at them imploringly. β€œSisters. Live together. Work together. It’s the dream. Maybe something good can come out of Grandpa’s health scare. If Grandpa lets us live in the house, and we pool whatever our savings are together, it’s not a financial stretch. Elliot and I can keep our indepenΒdent businesses running while we get our joint business set up. Then we split the farm profit four ways.”

β€œProfit. That is optimistic at best,” Georgie said.

β€œYou know I am all about optimism,” Teddy returned.

A wind chime tinkled from the front room, which was odd considering there shouldn’t be enough wind to make it move here inside.

β€œDid someone leave the door open?” Joey asked, pushΒing back from the table. The girls got up and walked toΒward the door, which was indeed open.

β€œLook at that,” Elliot said.

They stepped out onto the porch together. Beyond the dogwood in the front just beginning to bloom, the sun was setting in a riot of colorsβ€”bright magentas, deep oranges, fading into lavenders and lighter pinks.

β€œIt’s the most beautiful sunset I’ve ever seen.”

β€œThat’s a tad dramatic, Teddy,” Georgie said gently, though her voice held all the awe of someone who agreed, but would never admit it.

β€œWe have to do it,” Teddy said, her voice almost a whisΒper. β€œThis is a sign. Don’t you believe in fate?”

Elliot nodded. β€œYeah. I’m mobile. I go where I please. Why not right here?”

Georgie shrugged. β€œDon’t know about fate, but it wouldn’t change much for me, except you guys would be close. I’d like that. Felix is talking about leaving Jasper Creek.”

Teddy reached out, but Georgie stopped her with a quellΒing look. β€œIt’s fine.” She offered a smile, or Georgie’s verΒsion of a smile anyway. β€œEspecially if you guys are here.”

All eyes turned to Joey.

β€œI have to talk timing over with my mom. I don’t want to leave her short-staffed,” Joey said, her eyes still on the sunset. Then she pushed out a breath and looked at her sisΒters and grinned. β€œBut why the hell not?”

Teddy smiled at the sunset, feeling a bit teary over the whole thing. But it was meant to be, she was sure of it. β€œFour Sisters Farm.” She looked at each of her sisters. β€œThat’s what we can call it. Because it’ll be ours. Always.”

Review:

The four Hathaway sisters may not have grown up together, and they may be as different as can be, that doesn’t mean they don’t love each other deeply. So when the opportunity arises to make a life together in Jasper Creek, they don’t hesitate. But what started as a chance to be there for their grandfather and start a life together, quickly becomes so much more.

I gotta admit, I’m pretty impressed with how well these authors manage to blend their voices. I don’t think I would have known that the stories were written by different people if they didn’t tell me. Each one is an easy-to-read mix of humor and emotion, romance and familial bonds, but still highlights the distinctiveness of each sister and the cowboy who captures her heart.

The newest anthology in the Jasper Creek series is a delightfully fun read. While I haven’t read the first two, and you really don’t need to, I’m definitely adding them to my TBR pile.

I have volunteered to share my review and all the opinions are 100% my own.

Sidney is caring and strong, but a little awkward in her femininity and not much into flirting. Raised by her dad and then becoming a marine, it makes sense that she hasn’t had a lot of practice. It really hasn’t been a problem until she starts comparing herself to Gunner’s conquests. As her heart gets ever closer to breaking with every new woman than joins him in bed, she realizes she has to do something – either convince him to see her as more than a friend or find a way to move on. It’s not going to be easy, and definitely has plenty of potential for going horribly wrong, but she’s gotta take that chance.

Gunner knows that Sidney is the best thing that ever happened to him and the thought of losing her friendship is unbearable. Faced with the possibility of losing her to someone else, especially his cousin, has him in knots. Before long, he realizes that maybe she’s more to him than his best friend who is like one of the guys. But is he willing to risk everything to find out?

Man, I felt for Sidney. Firmly put in the friend zone and living with Gunner while he brings women home with a great deal of frequency … it’s no wonder she gets a little desperate. Watching him wake up and realize exactly what they could be together – very satisfying!

Tough Justice

K-9 Special Ops series

by Tee O’Fallon

Genre: Romantic SuspenseΒ

Release Date: March 29th

Blurb:

It should have been a routine investigation. Instead, DEA K-9 agent Adam “Deck” Decker watches in horror as one Denver hospital seems to be Ground Zero for overdoses of a new drug. Now Deck can only hope a certain icy, green-eyed ER doctor will help him and his canine partner track down the deadly source.

Dr. Tori Sampson has her reasons for not trusting federal agents, especially ones working for the DEA. But the rash of overdosesβ€”including a heartbreaking case involving a teenβ€”is alarmingly high. And the new opioid is not only extremely dangerous, it defies all the usual medical treatments. So Tori has a choice: work with the big, brawny, and annoyingly hot DEA agent…or watch more innocent people die.

Tori’s the only person who can help Deck break the case, and they’ll need to trust each other, no matter how high the tension and attraction sizzling between them runs. Excerpt:

When he turned and locked gazes with her, her mouth went just a teensy, weensy bit dry.

In the examining room, she’d been concentrating on her patient, then she’d been so annoyed with Agent Decker that she hadn’t really seen him. There was no denying he brought out the fifty shades of animosity, but one thing was for certain: with his chiseled jawline, slightly cleft chin, and sexy as all-get-out five o’clock shadow, the man was about as handsome as it got. Hard not to admire his muscular physique, either. He must spend all his free time in a gym, lifting barbells and dumbbells and whatever other bells made a man’s body that way.

He closed his eyes, as if reciting a mental prayer. β€œThanks, Doc.”

The last thing she wanted was gratitude from the DEA. The short-lived attempt to rein in her internal bitch flew out the window as the past came roaring back in a rush of emotion. Especially the distraught look on her dad’s face that fateful day.

β€œDon’t thank me,” she bit out. β€œI’m just doing my job. Maybe if the great and powerful DEA did its job, drugs wouldn’t be sold on every street corner in Denver, and Colorado’s opioid crisis wouldn’t be spiraling out of control.

Your friend is the third opioid overdose I’ve treated today, and the tenth this week. Three of those patients died. And that’s just on my shifts. I can’t speak to what happens when I’m not here or how many are dying before they even get to the hospital.” She blew out a breath and grappled for a calm she didn’t feel. β€œWhatever just hit the streets could be the beginning of something really scary, and there’s nothing I can do to stop it. But you can.”

He opened his mouth to say something, but she cut him off. β€œAnd another thing.” She jabbed a finger at him. β€œThis is my castle, not the DEA’s. If you ever come into my ER again, I’ll have you thrown out on your muscled ass.”

A.M. Williams, Book Review, Our Best Shot

My life seemed perfect until he came back to town. With his sights set on me, he’s ready to settle down and face any challenge. Fans of Briar U by Elle Kennedy will devour Our Best Shot by A.M. Williams, a small-town, forced proximity, hockey romance.

Our Best Shot

by A.M. Williams

Blurb:

Rory

On the outside, my life seems perfect. I have my friends, family, and quirky small town to keep me satisfied plus my secret writing career that’s done better than I ever dreamed. What’s not to love?

There’s just one thing missing. But I don’t know what it is.

At least until he comes back to town. The man I crushed on so hard in high school, I couldn’t talk in full sentences around him.

He’s back, he’s ready to settle down, and he’s set his sights on me, the wallflower.

Every time I turn around, there he is. He wants to know about me. And no matter how hard I try to ignore him…I can’t. He’s everything I wanted as a teenager.

And as an adult? I’m discovering that he’s the total package and is ready to sweep me off my feet.

Alex

Deciding to retire from my professional hockey career was easy. I miss my family, friends, and hometown. I crave a slower lifestyle so I can finally settle down.

What isn’t easy? Figuring out how to coach teenaged boys in how to play hockey and win over the woman I can’t stop thinking about.

I think about her constantly and am constantly finding ways to run into her β€˜by accident’. I want to know everything about her, but she’s hesitant and I have my work cut out for me to convince her to step outside her comfort zone and date me.

But I’m up for the challenge. I’m ready to show her what being with me could be like and that she doesn’t need to be scared.

With outside forces working against us, can we get it together for our best shot at a happily ever after?

Excerpt:

β€œYou want to sit for a little while?” Alex asked, pointing to a bench just ahead of us and off the main path.

I nodded, hoping that the bench would be enough out of the way that people wouldn’t notice us sitting there and stop staring.

We settled in and I sipped my coffee, looking the park over.

Compared to the weekend before, the park looked totally transformed.

There were bright tents throughout the trees with local crafters and artisans, and loud chatter filled the air from people walking around.

β€œThis festival looks no different from when I came as a kid,” Alex said, pulling my attention to him.

I glanced at him and watched as he looked over at what I’d just been looking at.

β€œAre you surprised? You know we like tradition here.”

Alex chuckled. β€œNot really. I guess since it’s been so long since I was here, that I expected something to have changed. But nothing has. The same tents, same vendors, same atmosphere.”

I made a noise low in my throat. β€œThere are some new vendors. They’re just peppered throughout. Some ones you’re thinking of don’t come anymore.”

What I didn’t say was that some owners had died because of how old they were and their businesses closed. The town had to get some new life for the vendors, otherwise this festival would have dwindled.

β€œStill. This is the same. If I close my eyes, I bet I could recall where everyone is and the order of the games at the rink. I feel like no time has passed.”

I said nothing at first. Then I asked, β€œAre you happy to be here at least?”

Alex met my gaze and nodded. β€œI am. It’s weird how I didn’t think about so much related to town while I was gone. I came home for holidays and brief visits, but everything else was just background. But now that I’m here, I can’t help remembering coming as a kid with my mom and sister. Hanging with my friends before our games. And all the other shit that the town does throughout the year.”

I thought about what he was saying. I didn’t have any experience not coming to the town events, considering I went to college close by and returned to town the minute I could. I’d kept coming to everything, even throughout college.

Review:

I have to admit that a lot of my enjoyment of this book is because of that bookish high school girl hiding deep inside of me. Rory getting a second chance with the popular jock she had a crush on as a teenager is just so gratifying. It helps that Alex has grown into a well-rounded, stand-up guy so you totally get where she’s coming from. There are some moments that hearken back a little too much to those younger years with a villainous mean girl and a jealous ex that at times could be a little bit OTT. Overall, though, Williams delivers likable characters and an enjoyable trip to a satisfying HEA. I’m looking forward to what she brings us next.

Already a worldwide success in mass market and trade paperback formats, Susan Mallery’s newest hardcover is an emotional, witty, and heartfelt story about a woman who takes a trip to California to figure out her life and get a break from her family…only to be reminded that life–and your children–follow you wherever you go. With a powerful mother/daughter relationship at its core, fans of Elin Hilderbrand, Susan Wiggs, Mary Alice Monroe, and Nancy Thayer will love this book.

Robyn Caldwell’s family is driving her crazy. There’s Harlow, her daughter, who’s engaged to a man she’s only known a short time and is rapidly turning into bridezilla. And her son, Austin, who would rather work with his dad’s family charter boating business than go to college. Her friend, Mindy, who’s playing with fire by contemplating an affair with her tennis instructor. And let’s not forget her ex-husband whose bad behavior has just crossed the line yet again.

Robin needs some time to catch her breath and figure out what her next step should be. So when her beloved aunt Lillian asks her to come to Santa Barbara for an overdue visit, Robyn jumps at the chance. Her aunt Lillian is working on settling her affairs and a distant relative is staying with her that stands to inherit the house. Trouble is the last thing Robyn needs, but she refuses to let her aunt be taken advantage of.

While staying in her aunt’s beautiful, quirky mansion and spending time in the Santa Barbara sunshine with the woman who’s like a mother to her, Robyn will see herselfβ€”and the people she loves mostβ€”with a bit more clarity. And it will push her to take chances she hadn’t dreamed of before.

But life has a funny way of following you wherever you go. What began as an escape soon becomes an unforgettable adventure…and Robyn is ready to dive in, feet first.

Excerpt:

ONE

β€œI’m going to sleep with Dimitri.”

Robyn Caldwell picked up her glass of white wine and briefly thought about swallowing the entire contents in one gulp. Mindy’s statement was certainly gulp-worthy. But she knew pacing herself through lunch was the responsible thing to do. A lesson her friend had yet to learn.

β€œYou are not,” Robyn murmured, because shrieking wasn’t attractive. Especially at β€œthe club,” where their friends and frenemies were also enjoying Thursday’s lobster salad. The dining room was filled with forty or so women, all dressed in Florida chicβ€”diamonds sparkling, gold or platinum charm bracelets clinking, necklaces resting on tanned and toned skin.

β€œI might,” Mindy Krause said, picking up her champagne. β€œHe’s gorgeous.”

β€œOf course. He’s a thirty-year-old tennis pro. What else would he be?”

Mindy, a petite brunette who was six months from turning forty, sighed. β€œI need a Dimitri in my life.”

β€œYou have a great husband. Payne loves you and the kids, and never has eyes for another woman. Why would you screw that up?”

β€œPayne would never know.”

β€œThere aren’t any secrets in this town. Not in our social circle.”

Something Robyn had learned the hard way herself. She’d been blissfully unaware of her ex-husband’s affairs until a β€œfriend” had oh-so-sweetly informed her.

β€œMaybe just some kissing,” Mindy mused. β€œI want a little Dimitri action. The fantasies make me happy, so imagine what the real thing would do.”

β€œThe fantasies are safe. The real thing could destroy everything you have. Knowing you’ve cheated would devastate Payne.”

Mindy’s mouth formed a pout. β€œI never see him anymore. All he does is work.”

Robyn stared at her friend-slash-boss. β€œYou two talked about how that promotion would be more work for him but that it would be worth it. You wanted this for him.”

β€œI didn’t know how much he’d be gone.”

The unreasonable statement grated nearly as much as Mindy’s whine. β€œThis isn’t a good look for you,” Robyn murmured. β€œYou’re changing the rules without telling your husband. That never ends well.”

Mindy dismissed the warning with a quick shake of her head. β€œI’m not worried. Besides, if he does find out, I can just move in with you.” She laughed. β€œYou’ll soon have that big house all to yourself.”

β€œYou have four kids,” Robyn pointed out. β€œIf things go south in your marriage, I’d rather have Payne move in.”

β€œWell, that would get people talking.” Mindy held up her empty glass to the server. β€œMore, please.”

The server obliged.

Mindy took another sip. β€œMy sister called, swears she found a Thomas Pister chest in a tiny shop in Wales. It’s dirt cheap, so I’m afraid it’s a fake. She’s looking for someone to prove authenticity. Wouldn’t that be a find?”

β€œIt would. I’d love to see it.”

Thomas Pister had built beautiful chests and cabinets in the late 1600s and early 1700s. His intricate designs with stunning inlays sold quickly and for huge amounts. Depending on the condition and the materials, a good-sized chest of drawers could go for sixty or eighty thousand dollars.

*****

Review:

While Mallery’s newest is full of drama, it isn’t a heavy read. Instead readers are given a story perfectly balanced between hilarity and emotion, with plenty of growth and self-discovery. There’s a lot going on but it’s delivered in an enjoyable, light read that has characters you can root for.

Robyn, and pretty much everyone around her, is at a turning point – with her youngest now out of high school, she needs to decide what she wants to do with her life. When things get overwhelming at home, she heads west to take time to think . . . only it turns out not to be the quiet time away she expected.

I like that we get different sides. We have Robyn in her 40s plus her ex and their grown kids, all of whom have life-altering decisions to make. It’s messy and angsty but they manage to handle it with humor and moments of grace. And occasionally poor choices πŸ™‚ It’s a delightful story about growing up, figuring out who you are & what you want, and the importance of family.

Excerpt:

The patio door opens behind me, alerting me to Bree’s presence.

β€œBree’s here. I gotta go,” I tell him.

β€œWatch your back,” he warns, not hiding the worry in his voice.

β€œYou, too.” I hang up and turn around to find Bree rubbing the back of her neck with a resigned look on her face.

β€œShe’s on her way, isn’t she?” I ask.

She winces and nods.

β€œPlease tell me Colt’s with her.” I like Colt, and it’s obvious he cares for both women. Plus, he can handle himself and is one hell of a shot.

β€œNo. Colt’s not with her. But she’s not alone.”

β€œYou need to call her back and tell her to turn around. We barely have enough manpower to cover you, much less Sadie and whichever one of your friends she’s dragging with her.”

β€œIt’s, um, well, it’s Killian,” she stammers. β€œHe didn’t want her driving by herself.”

It takes a few seconds before I trust myself to speak. β€œAre you telling me Killian Cross is on his way here right now?”

She bites her lip and nods reluctantly.

β€œExactly how many times has Cross asked you out?” I ask.

She wrings her hands together. β€œTwice. And it’s been months. We’re just good friends, not that it’s any of your business.”

I see red. β€œNot my fucking business? Are you high? Everything about you is my business.”

She backs up but it’s too late. In two steps I’m on her. I pull her to me and slam my mouth down on hers.

Instead of fighting it, her arms wrap around me. I fist her hair, and she gasps, giving me what I need to slide my tongue home. I bring her even closer, and she melts into me.

I pour everything I have into the kiss. If she won’t believe it when I tell her she’s mine, I’ll fucking show her and leave no room for doubt.

I’ve been waiting for this moment for two years, and all my frustration comes through. She moans into my mouth which spurs me on. I thought our first kiss couldn’t be beat, but this one blows it out of the water.

This kiss is everything. Heaven and hell, want and need, every ounce of my being focused on the slide of her tongue. I slow it down until our lips separate. I run my nose along hers then drop my hand down to her lower back and bury my face in her hair.

β€œThis is why you’re my business. This proves you want me as much as I want you. Face it. You’re mine, and I’m fucking yours. Always have been. Always will be.”

I lean in and kiss the side of her lips. β€œGive us a chance, beautiful. It’s going to work out. I promise.”

Her entire face softens, and I think I have her. But then she blinks, and I see naked fear flash in her eyes right before she shuts down.

Fucking hell.

About That Rule

About That Series, Book 2

by Erin Lynne

Blurb:

A vacation in Las Vegas with friends was going to be nothing but a good time.

When two of Samantha Nollins friends surprised everyone that they eloped, she was ready to party. After all, she was known to celebrate at all times, along with her bestie Nate Haddic. However, when they wake up the next day, their two friends weren’t the only ones who eloped!

Samantha and Nate immediately go to the courthouse, only to be told they need to wait ninety-days and try to make their marriage work.

There was nothing worse than two players who had to settle down. In order to keep their friendship intact, they created rules – which seemed easy enough.

First rule, no sex. This was a bummer, but there was no way they were cheating on each other, even if the wedding was fake.

Second, they had to visit each other more, which was no sweat off their backs.

Third, they couldn’t tell anyone. This was mainly because it was only ninety-days, why get anyone else involved?

Fourth was more because of the court order, but they had to take pictures of them together. This way, they could show the judge they tried, but it didn’t work.

Lastly, the most important role, was no falling for each other.

But, what happens if the lines start to blur?

Excerpt:

Samantha moved over to him and poked his shoulder in anger. β€œNow isn’t the time to admire the city. You ended a party where people, including me, were having fun. Then you decide to kiss the hell out of me like I was all you wanted. And now you pull back and tell me not to look at you like that. Do tell, how am I looking at you?”

Nate, being four inches taller, stared down at her. β€œLike you want something that’ll ruin everything.”

β€œDidn’t you kiss me?”

β€œWe were playing the game.”

This made her laughβ€”and not the good kind. It was almost manic, like she couldn’t believe this was actually happening. What a lame excuse, blaming their chemistry on a game. β€œAre you serious?”

β€œAs serious as our signed contract,” he said, a touch of bitterness in his tone.

She flipped her hair over her shoulder before putting her hands on her hips. β€œDon’t you dare act like this is my fault. Our sham of a marriage wasn’t something I forced on you. It wasn’t like I woke up in a committed relationship and celebrated the news. We’re in the same boat here.”

He huffed. β€œI know it’s not your fault we’re married.”

β€œWow, you sound so sincere.” Her voice oozed sarcasm.

β€œIt isn’t either of our faults,” he conceded. β€œBut it was stupid for us to kiss for no reason. We need to follow the rules. I’m going to hold up my end of the bullshit bargain.”

If kissing her senseless was part of holding up his end of the bargain, she wasn’t sure she’d survive anymore of their marriage. Her lips were bruised at the way he’d devoured her. Her pulse was still racing over the excitement of feeling his hands on her.

Confessions of a Fangirl

by Kirsten S. Blacketer

Blurb:

Life is good. I have a plush job, supportive friends, and a close-knit family. When the new hottie at the office asks me out on a date, I think I just won the jackpot.

Until movie night with the girls leads me down a dark rabbit hole. Who is he? An innocent Google search about a handsome actor has my imagination spinning. Now I’m drowning, and I don’t want salvation. I want him.

But I already have the perfect man. This obsession might just ruin my life.

*****

Excerpt:

β€œHot! Hot! Hot!” I juggle the hot cookie sheet between my mitt-covered hands. I seem to forget to buy new ones until I pull something from the oven and the heat seeps through the thinning fabric. Once the tray is safely on the stovetop, I pull off the offending mitts and set them aside. The sweet aroma of fresh-baked chocolate chip cookies fills the apartment.

Where are they? I pick up my phone and check to see if I missed a message from the girls. Nothing. Only five after six. They should be here any minute.

My fingers hover over the messages button. Shaun’s name on the screen hypnotizes me and in a flash, I’m back in the pizzeria, just the two of us. I want to send him a message, so he knows I’m thinking about him. But maybe that’s too weird. I mean, we only met this week, and already it feels like whatever sparked between us the other night is barreling toward a raging inferno at critical speed. I shake my head and set the phone aside. No. I’ll wait for him to text me.

I mean he spoke to me at work yesterday, so there’s something there, right? Before the seeds of doubt can burrow into my soft, anxious brain, the doorbell rings.

Pushing thoughts of Shaun aside, I rush to open the door.

Lily and Maggie’s grinning faces greet me.

β€œI thought you forgot about me.” I pout and step aside.

They push past me and drop their bags on the table.

β€œOh honey, I wouldn’t miss this for the world.” Lily turns with a cherry-lipped smirk. β€œYou refused to dish on your impromptu dinner the other night.” She winks. β€œWas it the new guy?”

My face warms. Betrayed by my own body. I sidestep into the kitchen to get plates out of the cabinet. β€œHis name is Shaun.”

β€œI knew it!” She bounces up and down. Today she’s sporting a cute pair of navy trousers and a warm, deep red cable knit sweater. Vintage, all of it, I’d put money on it. This girl and her classy style put us all to shame. β€œSo,” she pushes, practically salivating, β€œWhat’s the deal? You two hook up?”

I avoid eye contact and set the plates down.

When my back is turned, Maggie chimes in. β€œWait! Hold the phone. Who’s Shaun?”

Lily’s animated chatter sparks to life. β€œHe’s the new Head of Marketing and a stone-cold fox. Oh my god. Seriously. So hot.”

Maggie’s expression vacillates between surprise and hurt. β€œWhy am I only hearing about this now?”

β€œJen’s holding out on us.” Lily pouts playfully and opens the Chinese food container with those perfectly manicured hands.

Maggie grabs a plate, but her gaze remains fixed on me while Lily starts doling out servings. Her piercing stare could level a grown-ass man. I wonder if she ever uses this glare on her bosses at Solus? She’s talked about her single bosses, Mr. Ben Statler and Mr. Evan Waldorf, but neither Lily nor I had the pleasure to meet them in person. But we knew all about their reputations as Mr. Grump and Mr. Sunshine thanks to Maggie. Judging from the pictures on their website, they fit those monikers perfectly as well.

We often tease her about snatching one of them up to which we’re immediately interrupted with an ever-growing laundry list of reasons why neither man is worth her time. For a personal assistant in a multi-million-dollar company, diminutive Maggie packs a mean punch with her purple and teal highlights and don’t-bullshit-me attitude. Most people find her cute and often make the mistake of treating her like one would an unruly child or rebellious teenager. That’s their first mistake. Now she turns her intense stare on me.

I exhale in defeat knowing I will get no peace until their curiosity is sated with every juicy detail. β€œFine.”

We load our plates with our favorite assortment of foods and retreat to the small living room. I take the oversized chair while Lily and Maggie sit on the narrow couch. Between bites, I tell them everything from the moment Shaun collided with me in the hallway to his friendly greeting yesterday morning in the break room.

Their rapt attention is punctuated with random questions. At this point, I can’t tell whether they’re impressed or concerned by the speed at which this whole relationship is hurtling like a bullet train into the great unknown.

β€œWhen was the last time you heard from him?” Lily sets her plate on the coffee table, picks up an empty glass, and pours the wine I put on the table in preparation for movie night.

β€œYesterday at work.” I ignore the urge to pull out my phone and skim through the messages again. β€œShould I text him?”

β€œYes,” Lily responds just as Maggie says the opposite.

β€œNo,” Maggie repeats. β€œDon’t push it. Let it play out.”

Lily looks torn. β€œI mean, it is moving fast but don’t be too distant. I know there are a lot of girls at the office who are dying to get their hooks into him.”

I groan at the uncertainty driving a wedge between my common sense and my desperation to make it work.

β€œJen, you two will be banging by next weekend.” Maggie grins. β€œThen you’ll be all about Shaun and forget all about us.”

Lily nods, her curls bouncing and eyes wide.

β€œYou know me. I would never put a guy ahead of my friends.” I smirk. β€œEven if he is handsome and charming.”

β€œI am glad you finally found someone worth investing time in.” Maggie pours herself a glass of wine. β€œThose last few were losers.”

I wave my hand as though trying to chase away any possibility of the horrific memories of the last handful of idiots I went out on dates with. β€œCan we not talk about it? You promised you wouldn’t bring up my shame.” I pour myself a glass. β€œBesides, your track record isn’t the best either there, honey.”

Maggie shrugs. β€œI’ve given up all hope of finding someone worthwhile.”

β€œIt’ll hit you one day when you’re not expecting it.” Lily nods sagely.

β€œDon’t jinx yourself, Lily.” I chuckle.

She sighs wistfully. β€œSomeday my prince will come.”

β€œDude, you sound like a fairy tale princess, knock it off.” Maggie jabs her with an elbow nearly spilling Lily’s wine.

Lily sticks out her tongue, which Maggie mimics.

β€œOkay, children, can we watch our movie now?” I grab the remote on the stand and turn the power on.

β€œYes, please.” Lily claps and pulls a blanket across her lap.

Maggie leans back and sips her wine. β€œProceed.”

I turn on Prime and find the movie we agreed upon. Source of Destiny. A newish science fiction spin on the superhero genre one of my other coworkers, Mike from supply, recommended a few weeks ago when he overheard me and Lily talking about movie night. Once I find it, I hit play and settle back in my oversized comfy chair.

Movie night with the girls is my favorite night of the week. It’s relaxed and comfortable. Yeah, we banter and argue about stupid shit while drinking wine and watching ridiculous movies. Sometimes we even get in debates about how hot an actor is or how idiotic a plot turns out to be. But that’s half the fun of it. Nothing’s too serious and in the end, we’re just friends spending time together and having a blast.

β€œWhat’s this about again?” Maggie wrinkles her nose as the movie starts dark and ominous.

β€œIt’s a superhero flick set in space.” Lily’s voice cuts through the increasing tempo of the music.

β€œWho’s in it?” Maggie asks.

β€œI have no idea.” I shake my head.

β€œLooks like a B-rated space opera.” Maggie giggles.

β€œShhh.” Lily jabs her with a finger.

Twenty minutes into the film, and we’re all sucked into the action. Then it happens.

The villain reveals himself, and suddenly I can’t think of anything but how sexy he is. I shift in my seat and my body warms at the deceptively seductive monologue surrounding me. His dark charm. A sinful voice. It burrows beneath my skin. How is any of this logical? Getting all worked up over a fictional character.

I shove it aside and focus on the story. But as the film continues, I find myself cheering for the villain. He’s tortured and brooding…which does not make him a suitable candidate for a relationship, I remind myself.

The rest of the film passes in a blur of action and cathartic release. There’s obviously room for expansion with more films. I’m curious to see if there are more with the villain since he wasn’t defeated in this one.

β€œWell, that was interesting.” Maggie stands and carries dishes into the kitchen.

β€œHow exciting!” Lily takes the empty wine bottle and puts it in the recycling can. β€œI wonder if they made a sequel.”

β€œLook it up.” Maggie’s voice carries over the sound of running water. She washes the dishes as I put away the leftovers.

β€œI’ll check it later.” I place the containers in the refrigerator.

We make quick work of cleaning up. Maggie and Lily grab their coats.

β€œThanks for coming over, guys.” I open the door for them.

β€œOf course.” Lily hugs me. β€œSee you on Monday.”

β€œUnless I don’t survive dinner with my family.”

β€œOh, I forgot about that. Your place tomorrow, isn’t it?” Maggie wraps a scarf around her neck.

β€œYeah.” I shrug. β€œIt’ll be okay, as long as Mom doesn’t freak about the mashed potatoes and Dad doesn’t remind me for the twentieth time to install a security camera outside the door.”

β€œAwww, he’s just worried about you.” Lily grins.

β€œYour parents are being little shits,” Maggie adds with a wink. β€œTell them to get over it. They’re in your house now.”

I shake my head. β€œDo you two want to run interference tomorrow for me then?”

Both girls shake their heads vehemently.

β€œI didn’t think so.” I laugh. β€œGood night.”

β€œNight.” Lily bounds down the stairs.

β€œLater, doll.” Maggie follows suit.

Once the door is locked, I grab my phone. No new messages. Damn. He’s probably busy getting settled in. I head for the bathroom and flip on the shower.

After a warm, aromatic soak, I curl up under the covers and open the internet browser on my phone. In the search engine, I type the name of the movie and add villain to the end of the proffered search. Enter.

In a flash of pixels, I’m sucked into his world and I want to know everything about him. I scan through the articles and see the character’s name, Captain Korbin Ransom.

I click on the IMDb listing, curiosity coursing through my every fiber, and find the actor’s name.

Nicholas Hughes.

Down the rabbit hole I tumble.

Author Info:

Kirsten S. Blacketer is a multi-published indie author of both steamy historical and contemporary romance. When she’s not writing, she homeschools her two children and enjoys time with her family. In those moments of freedom, she devours romance novels while sipping a glass of wine. Age has only shown her that writing villains can be just as fun as heroes. Her next life goals are to write a New York Times Bestseller and one day have Adam Driver play a starring role in a film version of one of her books. A girl can dream, right?
