Blurb:

Dear Lady Truelove . . .

My twin brother and I need a new mother, though Papa insists heโ€™ll never marry again. Must be nice, brainy, and fond of cats . . .

Lady Truelove may be Londonโ€™s most famous advice columnist, but James St. Clair, the Earl of Kenyon, knows his wild young sons need a tutor, not a new mother. They need a man tough enough to make his hellions tow the line, and James is determined to find one.

Miss Amanda Leighton, former schoolteacher and governess, knows she has all the qualifications to be a tutor. And while female tutors are unheard of, Amanda isnโ€™t about to lose the chance at her dream job because of pesky details like that. If Lord Kenyon insists on hiring a man, then she has only one option . . .

Jamie isnโ€™t sure what to make of his new employee, until he realizes the shocking truthโ€”beneath the ill-fitting suits, his boysโ€™ tutor is a woman. An unconventional, outspoken, thoroughly intriguing woman. Despite Amandaโ€™s deception, he canโ€™t dismiss her when his boys are learning so much. Yet Jamie, too, is learning surprising lessonsโ€”about desire, seduction, and passionate second chances . . .

Excerpt:

Chapter 1

London, 1893

โ€œAnd sheโ€™s off.โ€

Ten-year-old Owen St. Clair moved to stand alongsideย his brother, propped his elbows on the windowsill,ย and rested his chin in his hands as he watched their now-formerย nanny, a stern, black-clad widow named Mrs. Hornsby, step into the hansom cab at theย curb below. โ€œWeโ€™re to blame, you know.โ€

โ€œStuff.โ€ Colin, older than his brother by exactlyย eighteen minutes, shook his head, a decisive moveย that sent the unruly strands of his carrot-redย hair into further disarray. โ€œItโ€™s not our fault the Hornsby doesnโ€™tย like frogs.โ€

โ€œWell, we did put it in her hatbox.โ€ Owen sighed as

the cab containing Mrs. Hornsby turned at the corner and vanished from view. โ€œThree nannies in sixย months. I think thatโ€™s torn it, Colin. Papa said one more nanny and heโ€™d send us to Harrow.โ€

At the ghastly prospect of being sent off to school, the twins turned, sliding down to sit on the floor of the library, their backs to the wall beneath the window as they contemplated what could well be their immediate future.

โ€œWe canโ€™t let Papa send us away,โ€ Colin said at last.

โ€œHeโ€™d be lost without us. And what would happen to Oscar?โ€

Both boys looked up at the gray tabby cat that was sitting on the arm of a nearby chair, a cat theyโ€™d rescued from a tree in the park two years earlier. Oscar was twitching his tail and blinking his green eyesย sleepily, seeming unaware of the dire future that lay ahead for his two human friends.

โ€œHeโ€™ll be lonely,โ€ Owen said. โ€œPapaโ€™s away all the time, and the servants think heโ€™s a nuisance becauseย he doesnโ€™t chase mice. They donโ€™t like him. They might forget to feed him. They might give him away.โ€

โ€œWeโ€™ve got to do something to stop it.โ€

โ€œMaybe we could take him with us? Itโ€™s probably against the rules to have a cat at Harrow, butโ€”โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not talking about Oscar.โ€ Colin turned to his brother. โ€œIโ€™m talking about us and being sent away.

Oscar has nothing to worry about if we can convince Papa to let us stay here.โ€

There was silence for a moment as both boys considered the problem.

โ€œMaybe,โ€ Owen said at last, โ€œwe could find our new nanny ourselves before Papa knows whatโ€™s happened. Someone we like. Someone fun. If we do that, itโ€™s a fate . . . fateโ€”whatโ€™s the word?โ€

โ€œFait-accompli,โ€ Colin supplied in carefully enunciated, very British French.

โ€œThatโ€™s it.โ€ Owenโ€™s nod was decisive. โ€œAnd if weโ€™ve already found someone, Papa canโ€™t be too angry about Nanny Hornsby leaving, can he?โ€

โ€œMaybe not, but the thing is . . .โ€ Colin paused, his freckled face scrunching up with distaste, as if heโ€™dย just eaten a persimmon. โ€œWe donโ€™t really want another nanny, do we?โ€

โ€œNo, but what other choice have we got?โ€

โ€œMaybe we should find what we really want.โ€

โ€œYou mean . . .โ€ Owen stared at his brother, his expression one of both excitement and doubt. โ€œYou donโ€™t mean a new mum?โ€

โ€œWhy not? Weโ€™ve been talking about it for ages.โ€

โ€œI know, butโ€”โ€

โ€œAnother nanny would be tiresome. School would be worse.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s true, butโ€”โ€

โ€œPapaโ€™s sure to marry again sometime,โ€ Colin interrupted.

โ€œWhat if he picks someone who doesnโ€™t like us?โ€

โ€œWeโ€™d be off to Harrow like a shot. But stillโ€”โ€

โ€œIf we find Papa someone who likes us, she could convince him to let us give school a miss altogether.โ€

โ€œPossibly,โ€ Owen said, his voice making it clear he wasnโ€™t optimistic about such a planโ€™s chances of success. โ€œBut Papa wonโ€™t ever marry again. Heโ€™s said so a thousands of times.โ€

โ€œWeโ€™ll have to find him a girl whoโ€™s smashing enough to make him change his mind. Someone pretty, of course.โ€

โ€œSomeone nice. Someone who wonโ€™t put pomade in our hair and lecture us when our trousers get torn.โ€

Colin nodded. โ€œSheโ€™ll have to be brainy, too, like Mama was. And fond of cats.โ€

Oscar meowed, as if giving his endorsement of this plan.

โ€œThereโ€™s just one problem,โ€ Owen pointed out.

โ€œHow do we find her?โ€

โ€œThat is the sticky wicket.โ€

Both boys fell silent again, thinking hard.

โ€œWe could put an ad in Auntie Claraโ€™s paper,โ€ Owen said after a moment. โ€œMen are always advertising for wives in the papers.โ€

โ€œGentlemen donโ€™t, and Papaโ€™s a gentleman. Waitโ€”I know!โ€ Colin jumped to his feet and crossed the library to the writing desk. As his brother watched, he opened the center drawer, retrieved a sheet of notepaper, and closed the drawer again.

โ€œWhat are you doing?โ€ Owen asked curiously, standing up and moving toward the desk as his brotherย reached for the pen that was reposing in a silver holder on the inkstand.

โ€œWho are you writing to?โ€

โ€œWho does everyone write to when they want to solve a problem?โ€ Colin countered as he inked the nibย of the pen. โ€œIโ€™m writing to Lady Truelove.โ€

Review:

This book made me happy.ย  I loved the rascally twins and their inventive (and sometimes) disgusting pranks, which is hiding a deeper pain (of course).ย  They are adorable as only fictional scamps can be.ย  I also loved how much Amanda understood them and worked to redirect them in a positive manner, winning them over.ย  But most of all I love how she manages to break Jamie out of the prison he’s locked himself in.ย  With the death of his wife he’s pretty much shut down, throwing himself totally into his work, which unfortunately has meant that his sons have suffered from a bit of neglect.ย  Of course, Amanda proves pretty hard to ignore.

The timeline of this story is pretty short.ย  I think the whole thing happens in just a couple of months, and Jamie & Amanda hardly spend any time together, so you have to be OK with an insta-love kinda situation.ย  But it worked for me.ย  I liked the two of them together and I was totally in to a quick romance.ย  If I end the book with a smile, it’s a good read in my mind.
