Chapter 1
London, 1893
βAnd sheβs off.β
Ten-year-old Owen St. Clair moved to stand alongsideΒ his brother, propped his elbows on the windowsill,Β and rested his chin in his hands as he watched their now-formerΒ nanny, a stern, black-clad widow named Mrs. Hornsby, step into the hansom cab at theΒ curb below. βWeβre to blame, you know.β
βStuff.β Colin, older than his brother by exactlyΒ eighteen minutes, shook his head, a decisive moveΒ that sent the unruly strands of his carrot-redΒ hair into further disarray. βItβs not our fault the Hornsby doesnβtΒ like frogs.β
βWell, we did put it in her hatbox.β Owen sighed as
the cab containing Mrs. Hornsby turned at the corner and vanished from view. βThree nannies in sixΒ months. I think thatβs torn it, Colin. Papa said one more nanny and heβd send us to Harrow.β
At the ghastly prospect of being sent off to school, the twins turned, sliding down to sit on the floor of the library, their backs to the wall beneath the window as they contemplated what could well be their immediate future.
βWe canβt let Papa send us away,β Colin said at last.
βHeβd be lost without us. And what would happen to Oscar?β
Both boys looked up at the gray tabby cat that was sitting on the arm of a nearby chair, a cat theyβd rescued from a tree in the park two years earlier. Oscar was twitching his tail and blinking his green eyesΒ sleepily, seeming unaware of the dire future that lay ahead for his two human friends.
βHeβll be lonely,β Owen said. βPapaβs away all the time, and the servants think heβs a nuisance becauseΒ he doesnβt chase mice. They donβt like him. They might forget to feed him. They might give him away.β
βWeβve got to do something to stop it.β
βMaybe we could take him with us? Itβs probably against the rules to have a cat at Harrow, butββ
βIβm not talking about Oscar.β Colin turned to his brother. βIβm talking about us and being sent away.
Oscar has nothing to worry about if we can convince Papa to let us stay here.β
There was silence for a moment as both boys considered the problem.
βMaybe,β Owen said at last, βwe could find our new nanny ourselves before Papa knows whatβs happened. Someone we like. Someone fun. If we do that, itβs a fate . . . fateβwhatβs the word?β
βFait-accompli,β Colin supplied in carefully enunciated, very British French.
βThatβs it.β Owenβs nod was decisive. βAnd if weβve already found someone, Papa canβt be too angry about Nanny Hornsby leaving, can he?β
βMaybe not, but the thing is . . .β Colin paused, his freckled face scrunching up with distaste, as if heβdΒ just eaten a persimmon. βWe donβt really want another nanny, do we?β
βNo, but what other choice have we got?β
βMaybe we should find what we really want.β
βYou mean . . .β Owen stared at his brother, his expression one of both excitement and doubt. βYou donβt mean a new mum?β
βWhy not? Weβve been talking about it for ages.β
βI know, butββ
βAnother nanny would be tiresome. School would be worse.β
βThatβs true, butββ
βPapaβs sure to marry again sometime,β Colin interrupted.
βWhat if he picks someone who doesnβt like us?β
βWeβd be off to Harrow like a shot. But stillββ
βIf we find Papa someone who likes us, she could convince him to let us give school a miss altogether.β
βPossibly,β Owen said, his voice making it clear he wasnβt optimistic about such a planβs chances of success. βBut Papa wonβt ever marry again. Heβs said so a thousands of times.β
βWeβll have to find him a girl whoβs smashing enough to make him change his mind. Someone pretty, of course.β
βSomeone nice. Someone who wonβt put pomade in our hair and lecture us when our trousers get torn.β
Colin nodded. βSheβll have to be brainy, too, like Mama was. And fond of cats.β
Oscar meowed, as if giving his endorsement of this plan.
βThereβs just one problem,β Owen pointed out.
βHow do we find her?β
βThat is the sticky wicket.β
Both boys fell silent again, thinking hard.
βWe could put an ad in Auntie Claraβs paper,β Owen said after a moment. βMen are always advertising for wives in the papers.β
βGentlemen donβt, and Papaβs a gentleman. WaitβI know!β Colin jumped to his feet and crossed the library to the writing desk. As his brother watched, he opened the center drawer, retrieved a sheet of notepaper, and closed the drawer again.
βWhat are you doing?β Owen asked curiously, standing up and moving toward the desk as his brotherΒ reached for the pen that was reposing in a silver holder on the inkstand.
βWho are you writing to?β
βWho does everyone write to when they want to solve a problem?β Colin countered as he inked the nibΒ of the pen. βIβm writing to Lady Truelove.β

Review:
This book made me happy.Β I loved the rascally twins and their inventive (and sometimes) disgusting pranks, which is hiding a deeper pain (of course).Β They are adorable as only fictional scamps can be.Β I also loved how much Amanda understood them and worked to redirect them in a positive manner, winning them over.Β But most of all I love how she manages to break Jamie out of the prison he’s locked himself in.Β With the death of his wife he’s pretty much shut down, throwing himself totally into his work, which unfortunately has meant that his sons have suffered from a bit of neglect.Β Of course, Amanda proves pretty hard to ignore.
The timeline of this story is pretty short.Β I think the whole thing happens in just a couple of months, and Jamie & Amanda hardly spend any time together, so you have to be OK with an insta-love kinda situation.Β But it worked for me.Β I liked the two of them together and I was totally in to a quick romance.Β If I end the book with a smile, it’s a good read in my mind.
