Just For A Moment

A Return to Hometown Romance

Blue Collar Romance Series

by Kate Carley

Blurb:

From author Kate Carley comes a blue collar, return to hometown romance with heat, heart and a happily ever after.

For Grace Holland, coming home to Oak Bend isn’t easy. The journey stirs up old memories, including the heartbreaking reason her family left town. But now that she’s inherited both her granddad’s old Victorian home and a World War II aircraft that he’d been working desperately to restore, Grace is ready to face down the demons of her past—if the people in Oak Bend will let her.

Aaron Beckett’s life is a balancing act. His aircraft mechanic business is booming and being a single parent of a young daughter keeps him on his toes. But when Gracie Jane Holland, granddaughter of his late friend, steps into his aircraft hangar, Aaron’s well-managed life soars out of control, and every free thought begins and ends with that beautiful blonde.

Even with plenty of excuses to avoid each other, sparks fly while they work together to restore an old fighter plane. And just for a moment, it feels as if they’ve found a deeper, more sustainable connection—until well-meaning half-truths threaten to tear them apart.

When her past and present collide, nothing can prepare Grace for the storm of hatred that pours down on her. Ruthless words leave her questioning whether staying in Oak Bend and putting her heart on the line is worth the pain. Can this small town ever be home again?

Escape to Oak Bend, where blue-collar hotties work hard and love even harder, especially when it comes to landing their happily ever after.

Excerpt:

“Beck, I’ve heard so many great things about you. It’s nice to finally meet you.”

“People been talking?” Beck chuckled again, but he was studying her face, assessing her with those stunning eyes.

“My grandfather, Win Ross. I’m Grace Holland, and he left instructions that I should reach out to you. That you would have something for me.”

Beck tilted his head a bit to the left, a tender expression passing over his face. “Gracie Jane. I figured you’d be stopping by here at some point. I was sorry to hear about Win’s passing. Everyone in town loved him. And I felt blessed to call him my friend. God, I miss him every day.”

“Thanks for saying that, Beck. I miss him, too. And it’s just Grace now. I think my granddad was the only one still calling me Gracie Jane.”

“He did.” Beck nodded. “He talked about his granddaughter all the time. He was so proud of you and how you started that company of your own.”

As he spoke about her granddad, Beck’s eyes softened and his voice warmed. Talking about the most important man in her life with someone she’d just met felt bittersweet. But according to her granddad, Beck was one of his dearest friends.

“I remember how proud he was when I told him about my new business venture.”

“A website design business. What’s it called again?”

“Holland Designs.”

“Right.” He bobbed his head. “Win said you had more work than you could do in a lifetime.”

“That sounds about right.”

“I’m sorry I didn’t make it to the memorial. I searched for information but never found anything.”

Grace bit her lower lip and then shook her head. The memorial had been a point of contention between her and her mother. “There wasn’t one.”

“Yeah, he always said he didn’t want anything like that, but I wondered if his family would have one anyway.”

“No. My mom and I…We just wanted to do exactly what he wanted.” Grace’s mother had an entirely different interpretation of what Edwin Ross had wanted. “And his wish was to not have people standing around, staring at him.”

Beck chuckled softly. “I remember Win saying that.”

Several unpleasant tasks still remained to be accomplished today, and they dampened the joy Grace generally experienced reminiscing about her granddad. “My granddad left something here for me. Do you have that?”

“Right.” Beck pointed toward the corner of the enormous hangar. “It’s in my office.”

With quickened steps, Grace kept pace beside Beck. “This place wasn’t here before. I mean, when I used to live here, there was the airstrip, but there weren’t many hangars. Maybe two or three.”

“It’s become a thing. Owning a plane. Faster than the ferry if you’re crossing Lake Michigan. Lots of people around the county can afford it. And none of the other towns in the area have an airstrip.”

Stopping at the door to his office, Grace watched while Aaron walked to his desk and lifted a heavy-looking silver paperweight shaped like an airplane. He plucked a key from underneath and went to a tall wooden cabinet in the corner. With a twist of his wrist, he unlocked the door. From her position outside his office, she could see the small black safe. He entered a code, and the door swung opened. Shifting the contents around, he produced a manilla envelope. Then, Beck reversed his steps until he was standing in front of her again, presenting her with the envelope.

The strained expression on his face was exactly how Grace’s heart felt in the moment. A deep ache—one of loneliness and sorrow—created by the loss of a precious soul. Slowly, she reached for the envelope.

“Thank you, Beck. Thank you for keeping my granddad’s wishes safe for him. For me.”

“Yeah, no problem.” Beck pinched his lips together and glanced around before meeting her eyes again. “So, are you ready for your tour?”

“Tour? Now? No.” Grace shook her head, fighting a choking feeling at the back of her throat. A tour—wasting time, wandering around—wasn’t part of her plans for today. Not even for a few minutes. “No. I don’t need a tour. But thanks for this.” She lifted the envelope to indicated she had all she needed at the moment.

Again, he tilted his head the slightest bit to the left and then gave a gruff grunt.

“Suit yourself,” he said. Like a switch had been flipped, his tone turned dark and sarcastic, and Grace had no idea why. “See ya around, Gracie Jane.”

Giving Her Promise

Crawford Falls #2 (A complete stand-alone novel)

by Kate Carley

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Release Date: June 8, 2018

Length: 79,339 words

Blurb:

Who plans a two-week engagement?

It’s a valid question. But Claire Bronstad—a tenth-grade biology teacher and aspiring fiction author— doesn’t have time to analyze it. Her flight home to Crawford Falls is in a few hours, and there is no way she’s missing her brother’s wedding. Her roommate, Greyson Westcott, apparently isn’t feeling that same time crunch, announcing he’d like to take their platonic relationship to the next level. “I’ve been thinking it’s time we start exploring us.”

Exploring us? Is that code for sex?

Another solid question. One Greyson answers with a passionate, toe-curling kiss. Oh, yes! Exploring the possibilities could be simply scrumptious.

But is having sex with her closest friend a good idea?

Not without jeopardizing their friendship—a risk Claire refuses to take. Reeling with uncertainty, she meets sexy groomsman, Jesse Morland, and after a night of slow dancing, he has a question of his own:

“Come home with me tonight?”

As her feelings for Jesse grow, her friendship with Greyson unravels, leaving her grasping at threads and questioning Greyson’s kiss and the authenticity of their relationship.

In the picturesque river town of Crawford Falls, Claire discovers that some memories are best left in the past. And some dreams were never meant for her future.

Excerpt:

“I do too date.” Jesse scowled across the table at Hawk, hoping for a little help fending off Claire’s rather pissed off big brother. But from the expression on Hawk’s face, it looked as if he agreed with Dylan’s assessment and that Jesse was on his own here. He wished the girls were sitting with them in their big corner booth at the coffee shop—certainly Lacey, Brynn, and Olivia would side with him—but they were all deep in some conversation near the cash register. They kept giving him sidelong glances from where they stood. So maybe they wouldn’t be on his side after all.

“No, dude, you don’t,” Hawk said with a firm shake of his head.

Jesse glared at the big guy, letting his scowl deepen. “You could help me out here.”

Hawk’s glare was just as intense, but it matched his badass attitude—one that Jesse knew he could never pull off. “Look,

I am helping. Let me translate for you, huh? Dylan is just worried about Claire.”

“Yeah, I fucking got that, friend.” Jesse picked up his coffee cup, shooting Hawk a dirty look before chugging the last sludge of coffee. Lukewarm but still filled with a blessed amount of caffeine that couldn’t be put to waste.

Hawk cocked his head to the side. “You know, if I had a sister and you started looking at her, I’d be worried, too.”

“Really?” Jesse asked, not bothering to hide his sarcasm.

“No. I’d bypass worry and kill you straight out.” Hawk broke out into a loud booming laugh—a rarity these days—before he retracted his statement. “Seriously, guys? Jesse, don’t get all upset before Dylan makes his point. And Dylan, get on with, would ya?” Hawk rolled his eyes and eased back into the booth, taking his mug of coffee along with him, obviously checking out as mediator of this conversation.

“Think about it, Jess,” Dylan said. “You haven’t dated since Robin. It’s like you’re worried that someone is going to hurt you if you get too close.”

Jesse let out a slow breath and leaned back in his seat, watching as Lacey and Brynn made their way over to the table. “So, what’s your point?” he asked, sliding so that the girls would have a place to sit.

“You just pick up women, sleep with them, dump them, and break their hearts.” Dylan’s words cut deep, but just about summed up the past three years of Jesse’s sexual history. It sounded kind of bad when Dylan put it like that, and now Jesse wished Dylan would have chosen a more private place to have this conversation.

Jesse leaned forward, knowing he should somehow refute his friend’s recap. “That’s not all true.”

Dylan snorted. “Yeah, which part?”

“I’m honest right up front, so no one’s heart gets broken.” Now all his friends were staring at him. Did that make him a bad person? Obviously, his friends didn’t approve. “Claire and I had fun together over the weekend, and we’ve talked on the phone for a couple hours every night. We’re just getting to know each other. Nothing wrong with that.”

“Hurt my sister, and I’ll mess you up.”

“Duly noted.”

The Crawford Falls Series

Publisher: Self-published

Genres: Contemporary Romance

Page Count: 265

Blurb:

Kelly’s back.

How can two simple words make Dylan Bronstad’s heart ache and sing at the same time?

Even seven years ago, Kelly Anne Leeson had possessed that power. Back then, all Dylan wanted to do was drink and make love to her. Really, it was no wonder she’d climbed out of his bed and walked out of his life, leaving him with nothing but a nasty hangover and the lonely memories of their time together.

Today, Dylan’s life is on track. He’s sober with the support of his family and his tight-knit group of friends. But Kelly could derail all he’s worked to accomplish. Unfortunately, he can’t seem to stay away from her.

Lured by the offer of her dream job, Kelly returns home to Crawford Falls and the friends she’d abandoned a lifetime ago. Mending those broken relationships will require some honest answers and a fair amount of forgiveness.

But facing Dylan will take a lot more—like maybe a suit of armor to protect her battle-weary heart and the secret she fears she’ll never be able to keep.

While Kelly searches for a way to maintain the safe life she’s created for her son, Dylan works to remind her of the relationship they once had.

Just as they rekindle their relationship, secrets and half-truths threaten to destroy everything.

Excerpt:

“Isn’t that your turn?” she asked, huffing embarrassingly loud when they passed the county road and made their way up a fairly steep incline.

“I’m running you home.”

“Don’t need to. I’m a big girl, you know?” Kelly could feel his lazy perusal from her head down to her toes and back again. She was sweaty and gross, and he was checking her out. Unbelievable.

“Mmm. Yes, I know,” he said.

They ran in silence the rest of the way, because it was just too damn hard for her to talk. And he knew it. When they reached the top of the hill and turned onto her street, he said, “Let’s cool down.” They slowed their pace to a casual walk. “I never get to run with anyone. That was nice.”

“But you cut your run short for me. And it’s obvious, you’re in far better shape than I am, given that you can actually talk and run at the same time.”

Dylan just laughed at her comment, clasping his hand with hers, lacing their fingers together. “Go out with me, Kelly Anne. I’ve missed you, and I really want to get to know you again.”

The feel of his hand in hers and that sweet invitation sent a familiar surge of excitement through her. Kelly’s heart squeezed and her stomach did that little flip-flop rollercoaster thing again. As always, her body seemed to respond so naturally to Dylan’s attention. Or perhaps foolishly was a more appropriate definition of her response. While he apparently had warm memories of their time together, to her their relationship had been like watching an incredible firework display—spectacular, bright, loud—and then she’d been plunged into a dark, silent night all alone.

Kelly came to a stop near the side of her mom’s house and turned to face him, sucking in a deep breath and trying to ignore the nice hum of arousal playing through her body. “Jesse’s your best friend, right?” She didn’t wait, because she knew the answer. “Do you hold his hand like this when the two of you are together?” Classic Dylan reaction. He burst into laughter and then released her hand to give her a brief hug. When he stepped back, he wore that expression that generally got him exactly what he wanted. Kelly sighed and shook her head. “No, Dylan. I’m not interested in dating.”

Dylan moved in closer, tilting her chin up with one finger so she’d be forced to meet his eyes. Why did he insist on touching her like that? It did crazy things to her brain, not to mention the fact that it all but melted her resolve. “You’re kidding me. Come on, Kelly Anne. We were great together. Why not try it again?”

Because I know my heart will never survive.

FTC Disclaimer

I have received ARCs of books free from NetGalley (and many moons ago from BookTrib.com) to review but the majority of the stories are either bought by me or provided for free from the publisher, author, or PR company. The opinions I share are my own and in no way are influenced by an author or publisher. There is no promise of a positive review by any party and there is no additional compensation. Unless otherwise noted, I am not affiliated with any contest or other event mentioned on this blog and I do not receive a paid endorsement for any post.
