Right Number, Wrong Girl

by Emma Hart

Blurb:

Taking a work call for my best friend in my undies? Check.

Filling in for her after an emergency and getting mistaken for her? Check.

Royally messing it all up until the hot duke-in-waiting I hate but canโ€™t keep my hands off steps in to save me? Uh, checkโ€ฆ

Yes, yes, that all sounds wonderful, doesnโ€™t it? Until you consider I now have to plan and execute an 80th birthday party for the Dowager Duchess of Devon, and I canโ€™t organize my hairbrushes. The current duchess is the ultimate type A personality, determined to micromanage the entire thing.

Iโ€™m a typeโ€ฆ XYZ . . . LMNOP . . .  Maybe not even that.

When all my attempts go to hell in half a handbasketโ€”I canโ€™t even mess up properlyโ€”the only hope I have to pull this thing off is duke-in-waiting Hugo Edwards.

The dreamy, handsome, makes-my-heart-pitter-patter, arrogant tosspot Hugo Edwards.

He and his brother are the only people who know who I really am. The success of their grandmotherโ€™s party relies on us getting along long enough to make it happenโ€”and me and Hugo keeping our hands off one another behind closed doors.

None of which is easy to achieve.

When my best friend shows up to take over from me, the fact that Iโ€™ve fallen for Hugo is the least of my worriesโ€ฆ

Excerpt:

He turned to me. โ€œI donโ€™t see a car outside. Did you drive here?โ€

I paused. โ€œNo. I cycled.โ€

โ€œYou cycled?โ€

Evelyn snorted, getting up. โ€œPeople do use things other than cars to get around, you know. Back in my day, cars were for the rich.โ€

Hugo slid her a look. โ€œYou were the rich. You are the rich.โ€

โ€œGood point. Never mind, then.โ€ She winked at me, adding a cheeky grin to it, and walked towards the door. โ€œI trust youโ€™ll be taking Camilla back to her cottage.โ€

โ€œOh, itโ€™s fine,โ€ I said, right as Hugo said, โ€œI wonโ€™t be passing there.โ€

Evelyn stopped dead in front of him and craned her neck to look up at him. โ€œIt wasnโ€™t a request, Hugo.โ€

He rolled his shoulders. โ€œUnderstood.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s what I thought.โ€ She tapped his leg with her stick, and he stepped aside to let her pass.

It was abundantly clear who ran the roost around here.

Hugo sighed the second sheโ€™d disappeared. โ€œAre you ready?โ€

โ€œYou donโ€™t have to take me,โ€ I said, picking up the rucksack and slinging it over my shoulders. โ€œItโ€™s really not far by bike.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t want to take you, but the idea of Grandma finding out I didnโ€™t is something I like a whole lot less, so letโ€™s go.โ€

โ€œI have Noraโ€™s bike with me. I canโ€™t just leave it here.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll throw it in the back. Come on.โ€ He motioned for me to follow him again, and I begrudgingly did so.

I could not think of anything I wanted less than to spend time in an enclosed space with Hugo. Or any space, really. Weโ€™d not exactly hit it off at the pub, and that was clearly a theme we were going for given that weโ€™d sniped at one another every time weโ€™d spoken.

So sitting in a car?

No, thank you.

โ€œIโ€™ll ride the bike back,โ€ I said when he opened the front door.

โ€œJust let me take you. Iโ€™m trying to be nice,โ€ he huffed.

โ€œYouโ€™re only being nice because she told you to be. Youโ€™re not doing it out of the goodness of your heart. Thereโ€™s a difference.โ€ I stepped outside.

He followed me, pulling the door closed behind him. โ€œEither way, think of it as an olive branch.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not a fan of olives.โ€

โ€œOf course youโ€™re not.โ€

I gave him a withering look, then sighed. โ€œHow are you going to get the bike back? Do you have a bike rack on your car?โ€

โ€œI have a pick-up truck.โ€

I blinked at him. โ€œWhat is this? Little Texas?โ€

Hugo scratched his cheek. โ€œLook at where I live.โ€

Pointedly, I turned around and stared at the huge manor house. โ€œDownton Abbey?โ€

He licked his lips and looked up.

I swear.

If he did that counting thing he did with his Grandmaโ€ฆ

โ€œDonโ€™t start counting,โ€ I warned him.

His gaze snapped down. โ€œYou caught that?โ€

โ€œYou have the discretion of a pick-up truck parked outside Downton Abbey.โ€

โ€œMaybe I should count to ten instead of three with you,โ€ he muttered, walking over to where Iโ€™d left Noraโ€™s bike. โ€œIt might make me be able to be nice to you for real.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not a child.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re acting like one.โ€

โ€œSo are you.โ€

โ€œFair point,โ€ he agreed, wheeling the bike over. โ€œCome on. Iโ€™ll toss this in the back and take you there.โ€

All right. Fine. I clearly wasnโ€™t winning this argument, and even if he was only doing it because Evelyn had made him, Iโ€™d accept the olive branch.

At the end of the day, he knew I wasnโ€™t Camilla.

I was loathe to admit it, but I needed his help.

It meant Iโ€™d have to try to get along with him.

โ€œThank you,โ€ I said, watching as he carefully put the bike in the bed of a muddy black pick-up truck. โ€œSo why do you have this miniature lorry?โ€

He chuckled. โ€œExmoor.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re going to have to elaborate.โ€

He opened the passenger side car door for me. โ€œIโ€™ll explain on the way.โ€

โ€œThank you.โ€ I put both my bags in the footwell looked at the truck.

I was five-foot-three.

These wheels were almost bigger than I was.

How on Earth was I supposed to get in there? I supposed I was going to have to haul myself up and hope for the best.

I braced my hands on the seat and the door, took a deep breath, and yanked myself up. My hand gave way on the soft fabric of the seat, and my foot slipped on the metal step. My life flashed behind my eyes, and I was about to scream when Hugo grabbed me from behind.

He wrapped one arm around my waist and held me against his body. My heart pounded uncontrollably, and I didnโ€™t know if it was from the fear of my near fall or because I was nestled tightly against him.

He had a very firm body.

It wasnโ€™t the worst thing Iโ€™d ever been pressed up again, for what itโ€™s worth.

โ€œNeed a leg up?โ€ His lips were far too close to my ear, and his words were said on an exhale that skittered warmly against my cheek.

Yep.

Yeah.

Yes.

The heart pounding was definitely from his closeness.

This was an unwelcome development.

Kiss Me #2

by Emma Hart

Blurb:

What do a wrong number text, a burning building, and a quirky florist have in common?

A hunky firefighter with an extra-largeโ€ฆhosepipe.

In hindsight, I never should have opened that text message. The last thing I needed first thing on a Monday was a picture of some strangerโ€™s, um, eggplant, in my inbox.

I also should have replaced the batteries in my fire alarm, because my Friday night did not need to end with my apartment building going up in flames.

But itโ€™s fine. Itโ€™s fine. Everything is fine.

Iโ€™m only lying in a hospital bed with more split ends than Iโ€™ve ever had, almost all my Earthly possessions have turned to ash, and apparently, they donโ€™t serve wine to patients in this place.

But like I said, itโ€™s fine.

Until he walks in.

The guy who saved my life. My hero. Noah Jacobs.

And the universe is amusing itself at my expense, because the dirty photo I woke up to on Monday?

Itโ€™s his.

Excerpt:

โ€œHi.โ€

I glanced over at him, my lips curving. โ€œHi.โ€

โ€œYou ready?โ€

โ€œTo escape the madhouse? What do you think?โ€

โ€œThat I should put my foot down.โ€

I winked and clicked my belt into place. โ€œLetโ€™s go. Where are we going?โ€

Noah pulled away from the curb. โ€œI was going to let you direct me. I havenโ€™t been in town long, like I said, and I definitely havenโ€™t been out for lunch.โ€

I leaned back in the seat. โ€œHmm. What do you want to eat?โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re the one breaking out of jail. Iโ€™m happy to go wherever you want to.โ€

โ€œOh, no. I hate making decisions like this. Do you know how difficult it is to pick somewhere to eat?โ€ I shifted my whole body so I could look at him. โ€œDo you want Chinese? Thai? Steak? Korean? Pizza? Burgers? Caribbean? Mexican? Spanish? French? Italian?โ€

Noahโ€™s gaze darted my way. โ€œDo you have all those places in Creek Falls?โ€

โ€œNo, but that doesnโ€™t make the decision any easier,โ€ I replied. โ€œWell? Burgers? Pizza? Mexican? Italian? Steak? Or Chinese?โ€

โ€œI donโ€™tโ€”shit me, I feel like Iโ€™m being interrogated by the fucking Government.โ€

โ€œYou may as well be. Pick somewhere and Iโ€™ll tell you where to go.โ€

โ€œI said you can pick.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t care. Iโ€™ve been everywhere. Theyโ€™re all good. Youโ€™re the new boy in town. Pick somewhere.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re demanding, do you know that?โ€

โ€œYes, Prestonโ€”oh, heโ€™s my brotherโ€”regularly points out how demanding and difficult I am.โ€ I paused. โ€œIf you really want me to pick, I will, but you canโ€™t complain after.โ€

He turned the blinker on so weโ€™d head in the direction of Main Street. โ€œYou just said theyโ€™re all good.โ€

โ€œThey are, but itโ€™s not my fault if you feel like pizza and end up with a taco.โ€

โ€œI can honestly say that I do not care what I eat for lunch as long as itโ€™s edible.โ€

โ€œRight. Then turn left, then right, and pull into the parking lot next to the liquor store.โ€

โ€œI see youโ€™re taking us to a reputable location.โ€

โ€œOh, no. The liquor store is a pit stop. It just happens to be on the way to the Mexican place I like.โ€

โ€œI see. So youโ€™re using me for liquor.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™ve met my great-aunt. Damn straight Iโ€™m using you for liquor.โ€

Kiss Me Not

Kiss Me #1

by Emma Hart

Blurb:

What do you do when youโ€™re the reigning kissing booth champion but the only person you want to kiss is your best friendโ€™s brother?

Let me make this clear right here, right now: I, Halley Dawson, do not care that Preston Wright is kissing other women.

Not a lick. Not at all. Nuh-uh-freakinโ€™-uh.

I do care that heโ€™s doing it six feet away from me behind a gaudy velvet curtainโ€”making him my competition in this yearโ€™s kissing contest.

Why do I care, you ask? Because Iโ€™ve had an unfortunate crush on the insufferable idiot since I was sixteen years old, but I also know itโ€™s never going to happen.

Heโ€™s the Creek Falls bachelor to die for, and Iโ€™m the Creek Falls racoon lady who puts peanut butter sandwiches out for them every night.

Iโ€™m not going to let him break my four-year-long reignโ€”no matter how many times he breaks the rules and slides the curtain across to do the one thing heโ€™s not allowed to:

Kiss me.

Excerpt:

โ€œI never answered your question.โ€

โ€œWhat question?โ€ I darted my eyes to the side.

โ€œJust now. You asked me if I wanted to kiss you.โ€

I did, didnโ€™t I? Right. โ€œOh,โ€ was all I said.

Slowly, he moved his hand to my chin and gently lifted it. Still, I didnโ€™t look at him, keeping my eyes firmly trained on the front of the tent, even though I was facing him.

โ€œHalley.โ€

โ€œYeah?โ€

โ€œI want to kiss you.โ€

My eyes darted to his.

โ€œI thought thatโ€™d do it.โ€ His lips twitched, and he lowered his head until I had to fight the urge to close my eyes in anticipation of the kiss that was coming.

I swallowed, my lips parting.

Preston moved closer.

And he kissed my cheek.

I jerked out of whatever trance Iโ€™d just been in. โ€œWhat the hell?โ€

He jumped off the stage, grinning. โ€œI guess weโ€™ll have to wait until tomorrow to break the stalemate, wonโ€™t we?โ€

โ€œOh, hell no!โ€ I jumped off, stalking him to his side of the stage. โ€œYou just stood there in front of me and told me you want to kiss me, then kiss my cheek? The hell was that?โ€

His eyebrows shot up, amusement flashing in his eyes. โ€œIf I didnโ€™t know better, Iโ€™d think you wanted to kiss me, too.โ€

โ€œIrrelevant,โ€ I shot back. โ€œBut youโ€™re a special kind of asshole to tell a girl you wanna kiss her and then not do it.โ€ I turned around, then stopped. โ€œYou know what? When I beat you tomorrow, you can kiss my ass.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re way too mad about this.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not mad!โ€ My voice raised a few octaves. โ€œI couldnโ€™t care if you want to kiss me or not. I most certainly donโ€™t want to kiss you.โ€

โ€œWhy are you shouting at me?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m notโ€”โ€ I was shouting at him. โ€œWhatever,โ€ I said in a normal voice. โ€œMake sure you take that money to the bank. Tell Tish I sent you.โ€

I left him on his side of the curtain and went to get my purse. He could get fucked. After all that where I think I was so damn nervous I broke a sweat, he didnโ€™t even kiss me.

I wasnโ€™t lying with what I said.

He could kiss my ass.

Iโ€™d even wear my good panties and bend over for him.

Review:

I definitely have mixed feelings about this one.ย  I love sass as much as the next person, but unfortunately I felt like sometimes this moved a bit too much toward b*tch rather than snark.ย  I really liked Preston though and he was enough to gloss over those areas (although sometimes I wonder why he put up with the women in his life).ย  I also loved Halley’s relationship with her adorable trash pandas – her love for her raccoons helped me forgive her for some of her more difficult moments.

I do wish, though, that we had gotten more of Preston’s POV.ย  He’s a upstanding guy, doesn’t sleep around, and decent.ย  Maybe that’s why we only get a couple of chapters about him and the rest is Halley and her buffet of issues.ย  Which is fine, but maybe it would have been better to be entirely her POV so I wouldn’t have felt cheated to get just a couple of glimpses of him.ย  I also wished we had gotten more of Halley’s grandma and Preston’s Aunt Bethel, because I think those hilarious old ladies could have provided a bit a good hearted fun and humor to the story and offset some of the girls mouthiness.

I do have to admire how Hart kept things relatively drama free (except for the smart mouth moments), when she could easily have gone for the drama.ย  The romance itself is sweet and cute, and handled in a laid-back manner.ย  Overall, if you are looking for a sarcasm-ladden rom-com, Kiss Me Notย delivers well.

The Accidental Girlfriend

by Emma Hart

Blurb:

Top Tip: Donโ€™t put out an online ad offering your services as a fake date. Someone will take you up on it.

And it wonโ€™t just be for one night.

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is how I ended up being Mason Jacksonโ€™s fake girlfriend.

He didnโ€™t even want me to be. Noโ€”his sister was solely responsible for me being his date for his ten-year high school reunion.

Now, sheโ€™s responsible for telling his parents our relationship is real.

We have no choice. We have to act like this isnโ€™t all a mistake, like itโ€™s not all fake, like weโ€™re totally, completely, utterly, head-over-heels in love with each other.

Simple, right?

Wrong.

Excerpt:

โ€œIโ€™ve seen you eat nothing but junk. Are you one of those irritating people who can eat what they want and put on no weight?โ€

โ€œOkay, first.โ€ I held up one finger. โ€œYou look like you could walk into the cast of the Avengers, so donโ€™t come at me with that. Also, I run. Every day. And I donโ€™t always eat junk.โ€

โ€œYou run?โ€ His eyebrows shot up.

โ€œI donโ€™t know if I should be insulted or not.โ€

โ€œNo, I justโ€”you donโ€™t look like a runner.โ€

โ€œAnd you donโ€™t look like Chris Hemsworth, but here you are on my sofa looking like a dark-haired Norse god,โ€ I shot back. โ€œWhatโ€™s your point?โ€

He held up his hands, fighting another laugh, one that made his eyes shine. โ€œHey, I have a physical job. I rarely get to the gym, but Iโ€™m always moving.โ€

โ€œHave you ever worked behind a bar? Iโ€™m not exactly running a call center back there. It never stops sometimes.โ€

โ€œDo I look like I mix cocktails?โ€

Doing what heโ€™d done just minutes before, I took a long, hard look at him, from head to toe.

It was a mistake.

If I were a sloth, I wouldnโ€™t just climb him like a tree; Iโ€™d hang off him for a nap, too.

Lord, he was hot.

Focus, Lauren.

โ€œNo,โ€ I said. โ€œYou look like the lone wolf who waits for the cocktail-drinking girls to accidentally spill their drinks on your shoes.โ€ I glanced at the time. โ€œSpeaking of, I have to go and make those cocktails.โ€

Mason grinned. โ€œYou want me to come and get hit on by drunk girls?โ€

โ€œAs someone who has no say in your life whatsoever, I donโ€™t care what you do.โ€ I stood up and looked at him over my shoulder. โ€œAs your fake girlfriend, Iโ€™m a bit of a tiger, so I wouldnโ€™t.โ€

โ€œI know.โ€ He snorted, following me to the front door with his laptop tucked under his arm. โ€œIโ€™ve seen you play the possessive girlfriend. If this werenโ€™t all fake, I would have been a little turned on.โ€

I locked the front door and tossed my hair over my shoulder. โ€œPlease. You were totally turned on.โ€

He said nothing as we headed for the stairs.

โ€œYou can say something. That was a joke.โ€ I glanced at him, heat rushing to my cheeks.

His lips pulled into a smirk, eyes flashing. โ€œI reserve the right to not respond.โ€
