Anthea Crane has just finished up a successful action-adventure trilogy (think Angelina Jolie in TombΒ Raider), but she wants to prove she is more than just a great body. Β When she hears there are auditions for the lead in the movie adaptation of her motherβs favorite book, she jumps at theΒ chance. Β Told that she just doesnβt have what it takes, she convinces them to give her a shot and headsΒ to her hometown for inspiration β a town she hasnβt been to since her mother died when Anthea wasΒ eight. Β She stumbles upon what could be the perfect opportunity to research being a farmerβs wife β a blind man who wonβt knowΒ who she is and canβt judge her on her face or her movies. Β Cole Danielβs hasnβt always been blind. Β HeΒ remembers Anthea from childhood, when she teased him mercilessly, so he canβt resist using thisΒ as his chance of getting back at her a little for past hurts. Β But as they get to know each other as adults,Β can they get past their history and have a future together?
I enjoyedΒ Playing the Part. Β Darcy Daniel does a great job of giving readers characters with heart andΒ charm. Β Anthea is a little bit of a diva, but sheβs spent decades being an actor. Β She started when she wasΒ 8, and at the same time she was dealing with the death of her mother. Β It was easier to lose herself inΒ make believe worlds and sheβs lost touch with the normal world. Β It was fun watching her realize who she couldΒ be at her core. Β Cole experienced a devastating incident when he was a kid β¦ one with such far-reachingΒ psychological damage that it made him blind. Β Heβs spent years living a comfortable life but as he learnsΒ more about Anthea he starts to realize there could be a different life for him out there.
Playing the PartΒ is an endearing story of two people relying too much on the past, who realize there isΒ more for them in life if they can just let it go.
