The D’Angelo’s Book 3

by Catherine Bybee

Blurb:

Tasting wine is not enough: sommelier Giovanni D’Angelo wants to create it. To put his family first, he’s always deferred his dreamsโ€”a vineyard to run, a woman to marry. But a three-week vineyard tour in Italy could set him back on track.

For Emma Rutledge, wine is in her blood. Intent to run the family wine business one day, she finds that the men in her family are only intent to push her out of it. But that’s fineโ€”she’s got a plan.

When Gio and Emma meet on a wine tour in Tuscany, their shared aspirations fuel an undeniable chemistry. Returning home to California, they work toward setting up Emma’s vineyard and a label of their own. But when Emma receives a life-altering diagnosis, she worries it’s all been for nothing.

As Emma works to cement her family legacy while dealing with this unexpected challenge, Gio tries to convince her that their future isn’t just wine.

It’s each other.

Excerpt:

โ€œWhat are the chances of that?โ€ he asked.

โ€œThree hundred and sixty-five to one.โ€

He handed her back her license. โ€œNo. Itโ€™s much greater than that. Two people from the same part of the world, meet in a different part of the world, who both had birthday gifts that put them in the same place at the same time. Some might call that a sign.โ€ He knew she was listening.

โ€œWhat kind of sign?โ€

โ€œThat we were meant to meet.โ€ He leaned forward, stared into her eyes.

She paused. โ€œYouโ€™re suggesting romantically.โ€

โ€œI didnโ€™t say that . . . but now that you mention it.โ€ He liked that her mind went there right along with his.

โ€œDid you forget about the part where youโ€™re looking for โ€˜the oneโ€™ and Iโ€™m not looking at all?โ€

Gio couldnโ€™t help it. He looked at her lips and wondered briefly how she would taste. โ€œMinor crossroads, bella,โ€ he said.

She shook her head. โ€œYouโ€™re one hell of a flirt.โ€

โ€œSays the woman who asked me if her butt looked good in her pants.โ€

She giggled. โ€œTouchรฉ.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s okay. Iโ€™m a patient man.โ€ He wasnโ€™t, actually . . . but the white lie sounded good to his ears.

โ€œIs that your way of saying youโ€™re going to wear down my defenses?โ€ Emma asked.

โ€œIโ€™m sure as hell going to try.โ€

Her cheeks lit up, her smile didnโ€™t falter. โ€œMen never talk to me like you do.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not like other men.โ€

โ€œAnd if I tell you that youโ€™re wasting your time?โ€ she asked.

โ€œItโ€™s my time to waste.โ€

She blinked several times. โ€œIt was the bathing suit, wasnโ€™t it?โ€

It was his turn to laugh. โ€œA vision that will come up every time I close my eyes.โ€

โ€œI wasnโ€™t looking for a compliment.โ€

โ€œYes, you were. But no, cara, the swimsuit, while a bonus, is not what is prompting me to try.โ€ She intrigued him on every level.

โ€œDonโ€™t say I didnโ€™t warn you.โ€

โ€œDuly noted.โ€

Be Your Everything

The D’Angelos

by Catherine Bybee

From New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Catherine Bybee comes a romance about childhood friends who marry in Vegas and embark on a wild ride to find their happily ever after.

With two protective older brothers and a traditional Catholic Italian mother, itโ€™s surprising that Chloe Dโ€™Angelo can manage a date without someone in the family naysaying her romantic choice. And Dante Mancusoโ€ฆoh, no. Her brotherโ€™s best friend is not a dating-app right swipe.

But when they are left unsupervised on a late night in Vegas, all of that changes. Add in a Vegas wedding chapel and a couple of โ€œI dosโ€ and Chloe wakes up with a ring on her finger and a hangover. Dating Dante was always a secret desire, but marriage? The rift that this news would cause in her family has both of them keeping their nuptials to themselves as they scramble to undo their Vegas mistake.

Dante knew the rules: Chloe was off-limits. Only, he canโ€™t stop once his mind starts to believe she might be his forever. Just as their attraction deepens, Chloe flees to Bali, desperate to clear her head.

All Dante has to do is keep her brothers from killing him and convince Chloe that they are meant for each other. But first, Dante has to find her.

Iโ€™m a huge fan of the best friend of a sibling plotline and Bybeeโ€™s newest is a treat. Chloe has had a crush on her brothersโ€™ best friend, Dante, for ages. And unbeknownst to her, heโ€™s felt the same. A wild weekend in Vegas finds them married to each other โ€ฆ and then the fun begins – ignore their attraction, find a way to get out of their vows, and keep it all from their friends & family.

While they handled a lot of this in a less than, well, mature way, I definitely enjoyed the two of them together. Thereโ€™s plenty of heat and sass, leading to entertaining interactions and quite a few sizzling moments. Dante is a little bit alpha and, once he decides that he doesnโ€™t want out of his relationship with Chloe, he shows himself to be quite the charmer and a good partner. She, on the other hand, doesnโ€™t handle things quite as well but sheโ€™s written in a way that I found myself caught up in everything and engaged in them finding a HEA.

Catherine Bybee, When It Falls Apart

I’m so excited to share a Q&A with Catherine Bybee today!

For anyone wondering the plot of your newest release, you give a great sneak peek with the titleโ€”When it Falls Apart. What is โ€œfalling apartโ€ in this novel?

All the threads that hold my heroine, Brooke, together are crumbling down around her. When it Falls Apart begins with Brookeโ€™s romantic relationship crashing and burning. At the same time, in a different state, her father is circling the drain in the ICU. And for the cherry on the top of her โ€œfalling apart lifeโ€, Brooke has found herself demoted at work. In short, everything in Brookeโ€™s life is dissolving around her.

Like all of your books, When it Falls Apart has a beautiful romance, however, there is a rawness about Brookeโ€™s story. How was writing this novel different from your others?

If you read my notes both in the front and the back of this novel, youโ€™ll soon realize that the story was very personal to me. Rawness comes from experience. The relationship Brooke has with her father is hauntingly familiar to me and my dad. The emotions that the heroine experienced when taking care of him were easy for me to grasp onto and write about. Sadly, the love story with Luca was completely made up and I didnโ€™t have the support of a strong Italian family to help deal with the struggles, but I digress.

Relationships with a parent who wasnโ€™t there for you growing up are messy. When that parent ages and needs their child, sometimes that help comes with a bucketload of resentment, even if the child wishes they could stop those ugly feelings from creeping up on them. And THAT is the rawness you speak of.

Books, TV shows, and movies oftentimes glamorize what it means to care for a loved one. However, in When it Falls Apart you donโ€™t sugar-coat anything about caregiving and the toll it takes on a person. How do you think readers who have been in similar situations will be affected by this story?

Justified. Validated. Accepted.

Itโ€™s a hard job taking care of an elderly family member. And if there arenโ€™t other siblings to help, or wonโ€™t help, itโ€™s made even more difficult. Itโ€™s difficult, gritty, dirty work that only has a bad endingโ€ฆeventually. What I do hope my readers take away is that theyโ€™re not alone. That the struggle is very real and that if they donโ€™t find balance (which is almost impossible at times) they will burn out completely and not be fit to help at all. I hope my readers are empowered to set boundaries and balance, so they come out on the other side of caring for an elderly loved one whole themselves.

Brooke gets virtually no support from her significant other, which has her reevaluating their relationship. She realizes she has settled and has to make some hard decisions. Do you think this happens too many times to women in real life?

100% Yes! There is a song by Taylor Swift with a line that says, and Iโ€™m paraphrasing here, I can be what you want for the weekend. But often that weekend ends up being a relationship that women hold on to or are convinced they canโ€™t live without. Often it takes a huge shake-up to remove yourself from that situation. But once youโ€™re away from the day to day dysfunctional relationship, the easier it is to see the dysfunction.

After her breakup and move, Brooke is not looking for a relationship. In fact, she tells her best friend: โ€œI havenโ€™t wiped off my smeared mascara from Marshall yet, the last thing I want is to jump into anything else.โ€ Her crying over a man lasts all about two minutes when she meets Luca. Tell us about him.

Hmmm, Lucaโ€ฆ he is the kind of man who doesnโ€™t want a place on Brookeโ€™s dance cardโ€ฆhe wants to rip it up.

Luca is wired to help the people in his life. Brooke becomes a part of his inner circle simply by moving into the family building where he sees her every day.

Now, if Luca had flat out asked Brooke on a date, she would have run the other wayโ€ฆso no, he doesnโ€™t go about it that way. He simply shows up and does not leave. Not when things get tough, or messyโ€ฆor when his own past peeks its head in. Luca is a man who is right there at Brookeโ€™s side without question or censor on why she does the things she does. His support and validation of her feelings is the part she was missing. Add in the hunky Italian single father and โ€œMamma Mia!โ€

At first, Luca is not thrilled that Brooke is renting a room in his familyโ€™s building. What changes his mind about her?

Her strength and vulnerability. I know that sounds contradicting, but some of the strongest women I know have a big vulnerable spot in their life that if you know them well enough, you see. The biggest smiles often hide the deepest pain. Luca sees her struggle and dedication to helping her elderly father and since family is first on Lucaโ€™s list, she passes his unconscious test.

Lucaโ€™s family, the Dโ€™Angeloโ€™s, are incredibly close and share everything from ownership of the family restaurant to helping care for Lucaโ€™s daughter Franny. How is this different from Brookeโ€™s relationship with her family?

Brooke doesnโ€™t have that family. She has a father who abandoned her as a little girl that she carved out a relationship as an adult, and now sheโ€™s charged with caring for. Even her previous romantic relationship didnโ€™t support her unconditionally the way the Dโ€™Angeloโ€™s do for each other. Sheโ€™s rather dumbfounded when they start treating her like family. Itโ€™s a wonderful thing to watch happen.

San Diegoโ€™s Little Italy plays a huge part in the story. The community, language, and food are in full display. Tell us about your own experiences in your adopted city.

I love Little Italy, the food, the pace… the people. There are many places in San Diego that are overrun with the college scene, San Diego is a college town. But Little Italy is more family friendly. Very touristy, but there isnโ€™t a day you donโ€™t see locals hanging out. I go to the farmerโ€™s market often. Pick up authentic Italian ingredients for my own home cooking. I try new restaurants and take all my friends there when they are visiting from out of town. Not to mention it was the closest thing to the โ€œreal Italyโ€ that I could go during the travel restrictions. So why not write about it and tell the world of this small island within San Diego that shouldnโ€™t be missed?

There are two more siblings in the Dโ€™Angelo family. Where will you be taking readers next with the series?

Chloe is a yogi. Think Bali!

And Giovanni loves wineโ€ฆ think Tuscany, Italy.

I cannot wait to show you what I have in store for these two!

Excerpt:

โ€œOh my God, Carmen. He was standing at his car first thing this morning. Like โ€˜hop in, bella, letโ€™s get stuff done today.โ€™ Who does that?โ€

Brooke had picked up the phone as soon as Luca was off in search of a dump guy.

โ€œWeโ€™re talking about the single, hot, Italian dad, right?โ€

Brooke rolled her eyes. โ€œYes. Luca.โ€

โ€œOy, oy, oy.โ€

โ€œStop it. I need advice. And I need it before he gets back.โ€

Carmen stopped teasing. โ€œYou donโ€™t need advice. You need to relax. He sounds like one of the good ones. Let it happen.โ€

โ€œLet it happen,โ€ she mocked. โ€œI donโ€™t โ€˜letโ€™ things happen. It happens to me and itโ€™s never good.โ€

โ€œYou didnโ€™t used to be such a pessimist.โ€

โ€œOnce upon a time the glass was half full. Not these days.โ€

โ€œOkay, Debbie Downer. You want my advice . . . here it is. Keep doing whatever it is youโ€™re doing.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not doing anything. Zero effort.โ€

โ€œReally?โ€ Carmen didnโ€™t sound convinced. โ€œMakeup . . . a nice dress?โ€

Brooke hesitated. โ€œMaybe . . . a little last night, but that was it.โ€

Carmen chuckled.

โ€œCarmen!โ€

โ€œSorry. Okay . . . any red flags?โ€

Brooke thought about that. โ€œHe loved his ex-wife.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s a red flag?โ€

โ€œI guess not.โ€

โ€œIs he good to his mom?โ€

Brooke looked back on the dinner the night before. โ€œTo the whole family. He takes being the oldest brother quite seriously.โ€

โ€œAnd his daughter?โ€

All Brooke could do was smile. โ€œGreat dad. We should all be so lucky.โ€

โ€œHeโ€™s Italian, does he smoke?โ€

โ€œNo.โ€

โ€œA lot of Italians smoke,โ€ Carmen pointed out.

โ€œIn Italy. The San Diego variety are less in that wheelhouse.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s good.โ€ Carmen sighed. โ€œI donโ€™t know what to tell you, Brooke. How does he kiss?โ€

โ€œHe hasnโ€™t kissed me,โ€ Brooke nearly yelled.

โ€œNow then . . . we have a problem.โ€

โ€œThere hasnโ€™t been . . . I donโ€™t even know ifโ€”โ€

โ€œStop right there. He did not drive your sorry ass all the way to Upland to do grunt work all day if he wasnโ€™t interested in kissing you, bellllaaa. More than that, you want him to.โ€

Brooke closed her eyes, and even in her own head she couldnโ€™t convince herself that Carmen was wrong.

โ€œLet it happen. You deserve some happiness, Brooke.โ€

The van with the air conditioning repair guy pulled into the driveway.

โ€œI gotta go.โ€

โ€œI want a kissing update the next time we talk,โ€ Carmen teased.

โ€œLove you,โ€ Brooke said with a laugh.

โ€œBack at ya, boo.โ€

She hung up.

Her best friend was such a dork.

Catherine Bybee, Creek Canyon series, My Way to You

I love Catherine Bybee’s book, which makes it even more special to have her stop by today!

*****

Please tell us about the fire that inspired your newest novelย My Way o You.

I was taking my youngest son to his senior pictures for the school when we noticed a plume of smoke in the rearview mirror. I have lived through many fire scares in the twenty years I lived in my home. Only this time, it wouldnโ€™t be a false alarm.

You had to evacuate your house because of the fire. How did you feel in those moments?

I was thankful my children and I escaped, and terrified that I would come home to nothing but ash and debris. Iโ€™d packed up the cars with pictures and things I felt I couldnโ€™t replace, but had to leave one of my cars behind because the fire engine was blocking my ability to drive it away. But none of that truly mattered. I felt like all the work I had done to keep my childrenโ€™s family home after my recent divorce was for nothing. That fire was going to undermine the stability I had desperately tried to preserve. In short, I was an emotional mess.

While your property suffered immenseย damage, thankfully your home was left standing. Did this experience change the meaning of that word for youโ€”home?

Home is stability. Itโ€™s a base for all the things we cherish. But itโ€™s the people who make it so. I had a conversation with my youngest son not too long ago. I asked him if he missed the home he grew up in. (Iโ€™ve since moved to San Diego and sold my property in Santa Clarita.) This is what he said, โ€œThe day we ran from the fire, I stopped caring about the house. I didnโ€™t think it would be there when we came back.โ€ So no, he doesnโ€™t miss his childhood home. I was shocked to hear this since my youngest tends to hold back his feelings. I lived in that house for 21 of my 51 years of life. There were memories in every corner. But in the end, the fire and floodโ€ฆ and exhaustion made it easier for me to sell it and walk away. Now that Iโ€™m in a new place Iโ€™m reminded that my family and memories are always with meโ€”and a house is wood and stone. Whether I like it or not, howeverโ€ฆ it is stability. And that was shook to its core because of the fire.

Your life changed drastically in just one day, which is something your heroine Parker experiencesโ€”twice. The first time is when her parents die. How does this one event inform the course of her life?

She has to stop thinking about herself and put others before her. She had to grow up. Trauma changes you! Period. And I needed Parker to experience that so she could realize just how strong she was.

She has to find that strength again when fire almost destroys her home. Tell us how your heroine changes during all of this.

She needed to learn to lean on others again. Her parents death took that away and made her a very controlling person. (Ahummmโ€ฆ thatโ€™s my own epiphany.) Itโ€™s through the course of the book, and all the other players, that she learns to open herself up to live a full life. I think she also learns to be a big sister again and not the parental figure she took on.

In what ways is Parker like you? In what ways is she different?

She learned to let go, I still canโ€™t do that.

She fell in loveโ€ฆ Thatโ€™s not me.

She had a privileged childhood with tons of optionsโ€ฆ Not me.

Parker fought to keep her home and make it right to live in it. I fought to keep my home and make it right to sell it. After so many years and so many struggles, it just wasnโ€™t the peaceful place it once was. And with an empty nest and no Colin there to give it meaning, I needed to let go and start new.

Forced to leave college for a crappy job that barely pays the bills, Parker manages her family property, which consumes every aspect of her life. *****

Excerpt:

โ€œExcuse me?โ€

Parker turned toward the sound of the male voice and brushed aside hair that had fallen out of her ponytail. The sun glared in her eyes, making it difficult to get a clear picture of the man standing on the other side of her gate.

โ€œHello,โ€ she greeted him.

โ€œDo you live here?โ€

Probably a neighbor, she thought to herself. Theyโ€™d shown up constantly after the fire to see how close the flames had actually come to their homes. Many of them invited themselves in without knocking. That was until she paid to have someone come in and fix the broken gate and stop the trespassers.

โ€œI would hope so,โ€ she said, waving the pruner in her hands. โ€œI donโ€™t think I would take this job for actual money.โ€ The closer she got to the gate, the better the features of the man came into focus. He stood at least three inches taller than her, no easy task when she was five nine. Broad shoulders and arms that didnโ€™t look like they slaved in an office all day. He wore jeans. It had to be over a hundred degrees, and the man wore jeans.

And filled them out nicely, if she wasnโ€™t too tired to notice.

Parker forced her gaze back to his face, his eyes hidden by his sunglasses; his thick brown hair wasnโ€™t covered by a hat.

She stopped in front of him, the gate to the property a clear division. The intense set of his jaw softened slightly. โ€œIs your, ah โ€ฆ husband here?โ€

Three years ago, in a bar โ€ฆ or while out with friends, she would have instantly denied a lack of a husband. Out here, with a stranger โ€ฆ even an attractive one standing at her front door, she wasnโ€™t about to correct him. โ€œWhoโ€™s asking?โ€

The manโ€™s smile fell and he quickly removed his sunglasses. โ€œIโ€™m sorry. My name is Colin Hudson. Colin to my friends.โ€

โ€œWhat can I do for you, Mr. Hudson?โ€ She wasnโ€™t about to call him by his first name.

โ€œI work with the Public Works Department and wanted to see if youโ€™d let me take a quick look at the wash that runs through your property.โ€ He reached into his back pocket and removed his wallet. Out came a business card that he handed her through the bars of the iron gate.

She had to move close enough to take the card, but retreated once she had it in her fingertips.

He instantly shoved his hands in his front pockets and took a step back.

The card looked legit. Parker reminded herself that anyone with a computer could make a business card. โ€œDoes your department work on Saturdays, Mr. Hudson?โ€

โ€œAll the time.โ€

She peered beyond the gate, didnโ€™t see a car. โ€œDid you walk here?โ€

Mr. Hudson looked over his shoulder, pointed his thumb down the street. โ€œI have a company truck. I parked around the corner.โ€

โ€œAh-huh.โ€ She wanted to believe him. His caramel brown eyes looked kind enough. โ€œEven Ted Bundy was good-looking,โ€ she said loud enough for him to hear.

Parker looked up to find him staring, his mouth gaped open. โ€œThatโ€™s a first.โ€

โ€œSorry.โ€ Not sorry. โ€œBy-product of being a lone woman on a large piece of property with a stranger asking to come in. Business card aside, you could be anyone.โ€

He lifted his hands in the air. โ€œVery wise. I hope my sister would do the same. I was just hoping to get an eye on the canyon before Mondayโ€™s meeting. But I can wait.โ€

She relaxed her grip on the tree pruner. โ€œWhat meeting?โ€

โ€œThe city and county are meeting to discuss the concerns of the watershed after the fire. Weโ€™re developing a plan to preserve property during the winter. If I could take a quick look it would help.โ€

โ€œYou mean prevent mudslides?โ€

โ€œControl mudslides,โ€ he corrected her.

She shifted from foot to foot. โ€œYou can do that?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s a big part of our job.โ€ He smiled, looked over her shoulder. โ€œI can wait. I donโ€™t want to make you uneasy.โ€

Parker looked back toward the house. โ€œTell you what. You go get your company truck and Iโ€™ll grab a snake fork and show you the wash.โ€

His eyes narrowed with an unasked question.

โ€œItโ€™s summer. Rattlesnakes are a thing,โ€ she explained.

โ€œYou sure?โ€

Yeah, she was sure. โ€œIโ€™ll open the gate. You can park inside.โ€

Catherine Bybee, First Wives series, Say It Again

I just love Bybee’s books and always get super excited to see she has a new one out. So I’m just about giddy to have her here to share a little about it (out tomorrow)!

*****

1) Sasha, from your newest novelย Say it Again, is unlike any character that most readers will have encountered. Can you give us a rundown of your heroine?

Sasha is a female James Bond with all the skills that kick ass and the sexy that opens doors. Sheโ€™s a master of disguises, speaks more languages than anyone shouldโ€ฆand has a razor-sharp mind that doesnโ€™t sleep. In all her badassery, (pretty sure I just made up that word) Sasha has a soft spotโ€”a vulnerability that makes her want to protect the innocent. Sheโ€™s a true to life superhero who walks the fence between right and wrong. She really doesnโ€™t have any issues breaking laws to get what she wants. And thatโ€™s what makes her so fun to read, and for me to write.

2) Fans have been following Sasha throughout your First Wives series. Did you always know you wanted to write her story?

No! Not at all. The first four books in the series were going to be it. However, Sasha commanded attention the first moment she walked on the page and I couldnโ€™t get enough of her once I dreamed her up. I was almost finished writing the first book when I decided that Sasha was not going to be a bad guy. Yes, Iโ€™m a pantser, and have no real outline before I sit down to write. I think the fact that I didnโ€™t know she was one of the good guys made her all that more believable. I donโ€™t even think she knew she was going to be on the side of right and justice until the end ofย Fool Me Once.

3) While many of your novels have a mystery or suspense element, you dive head first into action and spy-games in this book. How easy was this transition for you?

It was super easy and tons of fun. In factโ€ฆ I think I may have a spin off of a spin off rolling in my head with all the fun characters I played with while writing this book. Neil was one of my very first book boyfriends from the Weekday Brides. And having him come back in this book just reminded me how much fun it is to write all the action and intrigue. I hope my fans love it enough for me to continue the theme with new books.

4) When AJ is first introduced he seems pretty averageโ€”just a guy looking for answers about his sisterโ€™s death. But in reality, there is nothing average about AJ. How would you describe him?ย

The best picture in my mine that I can describe with all clarity is Brian Oโ€™Connor, Paul Walker (RIP), fromย Fast and Furious. Innocent until he isnโ€™t.

I would say that AJ is exactly what Sasha needed to open up and accept that she too can be loved. I wanted AJ to come off as average until he wasnโ€™t. Sasha is such a strong character that she needed someone who wasnโ€™t going to try and overpower or overshadow her badassery (love that word). AJ does that. Yet he has some badass moments himself and that is what makes her fall for him even more. He is in no way perfect and neither is she.

5) AJ and Sasha have something in commonโ€”they are both characters with lots and lots of secrets. What makes them open up to each other? What else do they have in common?ย

Trust through time. Thatโ€™s the best way for me to describe how they evolved in my head. There is a common respect the moment they โ€œacquireโ€ the otherโ€™s phone. A moment where they take notice and begin to respect the other. Honor among thieves as they say. I think the common ground that isnโ€™t apparent until the story evolves is how they want the love of a family. AJ is much more open to it than Sasha, but they both have to fight for it in the end.

6) While you have written books with scenes in foreign countries, this story takes place internationally. Have you visited the same places as your characters? Where do you hope to take readers around the world in the future?

Yes, I have been to all the places I have written about. I was in Berlin a couple of years ago at a book signing and managed to get their by taking the train from London, through Amsterdam etc. So yes, Iโ€™m blessed to have visited these places which makes the story that much richer in my opinion. Richter, the school in the story, is from my imagination. I did some fact checking and learned that post Hitlerโ€™s Germany, military boarding schools were not welcome in the country. So I made one up and made it as great and awful as I could while still making it believable.

I have placed most of my travels, or experiences from them, in my books. And as I travel the world, I will bring my readers alongโ€ฆeventually.

7)ย Say it Againย wraps up your First Wives series. What have you learned while writing these books? Will these lessons affect your writing in the future?ย

On a personal level, I will say that Iโ€™ve leaned to write with a great deal of personal turmoil. There have been times Iโ€™ve doubted my process and this final book in the series has told me to never do that again. I would like to always keep the door open for more books because of characters like Sasha. I love writing fast moving romantic suspense and intrigue and can see Claire, Cooper and the whole of Neilโ€™s team as a great setting for future books. Yeahโ€ฆ Iโ€™m liking that idea more and more. I hope my readers do, too.

Say It Again

First Wives series

by Catherine Bybee

Release Date: September 24, 2019

Publisher: Montlake

Blurb:

Protector-for-hire Sasha Budanov is accustomed to life as a loner. Always on the move, sheโ€™s now reached a crossroad. Looking for answers about her shadowy youth, sheโ€™s returned to the strict boarding school in Germany where she was raised. Itโ€™s also where she was trained in the stealthy, militarized art of survival. But behind its gleaming gates, Richter is a fortress of secrets, including those buried in Sashaโ€™s mysterious past. To uncover them, sheโ€™s clinging to her first rule of defense: stay guarded.

If anyone can challenge Sashaโ€™s rules, itโ€™s devilishly sexy stranger AJ Hofmann. He wants answers, too. And he needs Sashaโ€™s help. The recent deaths of several of Richterโ€™s former studentsโ€”including AJโ€™s own sisterโ€”have aroused his suspicions. Heโ€™s arousing something more in Sasha. Never one to surrender to her emotions, she senses something tempting in AJ. She trusts him. Heโ€™s fearless. And he kisses like a demon. Sashaโ€™s found her match.

But treading Richterโ€™s dark hallsโ€”and following their heartsโ€”has its risks. As the decades-old secrets of the past are mined, Sasha and AJ are falling deeper in love . . . and into danger.

Excerpt:

AJ was being stood up.

It was half past noon and Sasha wasnโ€™t there.

The Brandenburg Gate was one of the busiest tourist attractions in Berlin. The square was filled with families and walking tours led by someone holding a colored flag on a stick and talking into a microphone while a line of dazed, zombie-like visitors followed behind. Aside from those in the square learning about the history of the place, there were a dozen police officers and security guards moving around. Considering the American, British, and French embassies were all within a stoneโ€™s throw of each other, AJ was surprised there wasnโ€™t a stronger military presence.

AJ kept scanning the crowd in search of Sex on a Stick in black leather pants and a bad attitude.

Nothing.

Left without options, AJ dialed his phone number on her phone and waited. It rang twice.

Behind him, the riff of โ€œBad to the Bone,โ€ his ringtone, shot through him. He dropped his hand from his ear and saw a blonde standing three feet away, her back to him.

Slowly she turned.

โ€œWhoa.โ€

Sasha stared back at him, wearing white capri pants and a bright floral top. The blonde wig overdid it but completely camouflaged her in broad daylight. She took a step closer, reached out her hand holding his cell. โ€œHello, AJ.โ€

They switched phones. โ€œHow long have you been standing there?โ€

โ€œHalf an hour, give or take.โ€

He looked her up and down. She looked like a typical American housewife, minus the kid in the stroller. โ€œImpressive.โ€

โ€œI wanted to make sure you were alone.โ€

AJ glanced around at the passing tourists. โ€œIs there a reason behind the cloak-and-dagger?โ€

She moved closer, lowered her voice. โ€œYouโ€™ve come here to look for your sisterโ€™s killer. You think there is some connection to Richter. Went so far as to go there asking questions. Youโ€™re stalking the local pub and hitting on, not to mention stealing from, the patrons . . .โ€ Sasha waved her phone in the air before tucking it into her back pocket.

โ€œIโ€™m calling pot to kettle on that last accusation.โ€ Although all the rest she pointed out was spot-on.

โ€œI like to go unnoticed. If someone followed me here, they lost me the second I made the city limits and went clothes shopping.โ€

โ€œWhat if someone followed me?โ€

โ€œThen I would have seen them watching in the thirty minutes youโ€™ve been standing around looking like a lost child without a parent.โ€ She turned and started walking toward the gate.

AJ had no choice but to follow.

โ€œWhat makes you think anyone is following either of us?โ€

She smiled, didnโ€™t answer his question. โ€œI used to help your sister on her agility training,โ€ she told him.

The mention of his sister brought his attention back to what he should be focused on. โ€œShe wasnโ€™t the most athletic woman.โ€ Amelia took after their mother, who didnโ€™t grow more than five feet five inches tall and had a sweet tooth that always kept her rounder than sheโ€™d liked. At least thatโ€™s what sheโ€™d blame when she went on one of her many diets.

โ€œNo. But she held her own most of the time. Everyone at Richter was pushed to do at least that.โ€

โ€œHer coworkers said she had recently started taking morning walks before work,โ€ AJ said.

โ€œWhich explains the police report about her being murdered in the park and tossed in the river.โ€

AJ stopped walking. โ€œYou looked her up.โ€

โ€œOnly because I knew her.โ€

He jumped in front of her, stopped her from moving. โ€œThen youโ€™ll help me.โ€

โ€œThere is nothing to suggest that Ameliaโ€™s death is at all linked to Richter.โ€

AJ looked over Sashaโ€™s shoulder and noticed a man eating an ice cream cone and staring at Sasha. The middle-aged guy turned his attention away and took a few steps in the opposite direction.

โ€œMaybe she . . .โ€

AJ felt eyes, turned to his left.

No one.

โ€œWhat is it?โ€ Sasha asked.

โ€œThe guy with the ice cream, over your left shoulder.โ€

She grinned, cocked her head to the side. โ€œWe did this last night.โ€

โ€œYeah, only Iโ€™m not asking you to lay a lip lock on me. Tempting as that might be.โ€ Truth was, heโ€™d thought about that kiss more times than he wanted to admit. โ€œIf how youโ€™re dressed is any indication, youโ€™re the expert on all things undercover. You tell me if you feel the weight of someoneโ€™s stare.โ€

Sasha paused, then looked over her shoulder. โ€œThat him?โ€ she asked, thumbing toward the guy with the ice cream.

โ€œYeah.โ€

She grabbed AJโ€™s hand and walked directly toward the guy he thought for sure was watching them.

โ€œWhat are you doing?โ€

She didnโ€™t answer. โ€œExcuse me?โ€ Her voice rose a full octave, her smile was sickeningly sweet. Any accent heโ€™d detected from her voice was gone . . . or changed.

The man with the cone turned toward them. โ€œYes?โ€

โ€œAre you American? You look American.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m, ah . . . yeah.โ€ The guy looked directly at AJ.

Sasha kept going. โ€œGood. Would you mind taking our picture? I canโ€™t get the gate behind us with a selfie.โ€

Again the guy offered AJ unblinking eyes. โ€œAh, sure.โ€ He reached for the phone Sasha was handing him.

Next thing AJ realized, he was standing beside Sasha, her arm slipped around his waist, and he was smiling like all of the other tourists surrounding them while the man he thought was spying on them took their picture.

The stranger holding Sashaโ€™s phone, while trying to balance his ice cream cone, looked completely out of place.

โ€œTake a second one, just in case.โ€ Sasha giggled.

The sound of her voice didnโ€™t suit her. The hand on his waist, however, suited him just fine. The feel of her there, the warmth, the softness he knew she would hate if he pointed it out, felt a little too right.

โ€œThank you so much.โ€

The stranger handed her phone back with a nod. โ€œHave fun.โ€

She waved. โ€œWe will . . . thanks.โ€

And he was gone.

AJ watched the man slip away as Sasha removed herself from AJโ€™s side.

He missed her warmth, instantly.

โ€œAny self-preserving spy wouldnโ€™t have made contact,โ€ Sasha told him.

The two of them walked toward the center of the square. โ€œOkay,โ€ AJ started. โ€œMaybe Iโ€™m a little paranoid.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re a lot paranoid.โ€

AJ paused in the middle of the plaza and stared at the massive horses that sat atop the gate. The image of his sister at Christmas the previous year surfaced. It was the last time heโ€™d seen her alive. โ€œI know Ameliaโ€™s death wasnโ€™t random, Sasha. I feel it with every breath I take.โ€

She sighed. โ€œI know you do.โ€

He looked at her. โ€œYou donโ€™t believe me.โ€

โ€œI believe you believe.โ€

He lowered his head, studied the salt-and-pepper colored stones beneath his feet. โ€œYouโ€™re not going to help.โ€ Damn it . . . he was back to ground zero.

Another heavy sigh from the woman at his side. โ€œI will help you.โ€

AJ snapped his head up. โ€œWhat?โ€

She placed a hand in the air as in warning. โ€œNot because I think you have anything other than grief inside you. The not knowing, or never accepting the facts, can eat you alive.โ€

Not ground zero. He wanted to kiss her. Not that she would be receptive to that kind of thing. โ€œWhy are you doing this?โ€ There wasnโ€™t anything in it for her. Sasha turned away from him and focused her attention on the Brandenburg Gate.

โ€œBecause Iโ€™m not bored.โ€

Excerpt:

Victor noticed Shannon sitting in the open dining area of the hotel the next morning, drinking coffee and reading on her e-reader. Heโ€™d spent most of the previous day licking his metaphorical wounds and nursing a headache.

Dressed in cotton pants that went midcalf and a light shirt, she looked like she was dressed for a long plane ride home. As much a pain in the ass as the woman had been, he felt compelled to say goodbye. After all, he was the reason she was there.

He walked up quietly behind her. โ€œIf it isnโ€™t woman who fed me mezcal.โ€

The sound of his voice made her jump.

Too bad she wasnโ€™t holding her coffee.

โ€œYou have got to stop doing that.โ€

Without an invitation, he sat and smiled. She took a deep breath and looked away, came painfully close to rolling her eyes. For some reason, he appreciated the fact she held back and wondered just how much it would take for her to disregard him with such a gesture.

โ€œPlease, sit down,โ€ she said.

He glanced at his chair. โ€œThank you.โ€

She set her e-reader aside and regarded him. โ€œI thought for sure youโ€™d be back at the office by now.โ€

So did he. โ€œI couldnโ€™t fly yesterday even if Iโ€™d found a flight.โ€

โ€œOh?โ€

He didnโ€™t miss the tiny shine in the corner of her eye.

โ€œNo. I had one too many the other night. Inflicting that on whoever had the misfortune of sitting next to me on the flight home was more than I could take after my flight here.โ€

She smiled, briefly, and lifted her chin. โ€œIโ€™m glad to hear youโ€™ve evolved since Friday.โ€

Unable to help himself, he laughed.

Her smile returned.

Victor felt a twist in his gut, a pull to something he didnโ€™t want to name. โ€œI guess youโ€™re leaving today,โ€ he said.

She shrugged. โ€œI am.โ€

He nodded. โ€œJustin informed me you made sure I didnโ€™t decide to go for a late night swim.โ€

โ€œIt was tempting. But then I realized you wouldnโ€™t be able to pay me if you swallowed too much water.โ€

โ€œSelf-preserving. Very smart of you.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s a gift.โ€

When the woman wasnโ€™t tossing barbs at him, she was beautiful. Perfect lines in her face, high cheekbones โ€ฆ he couldnโ€™t tell if her olive skin was from an ancestor or the byproduct of living in Southern California. Not anything like anyone heโ€™d been attracted to before.

What was he thinking? He wasnโ€™t attracted.

Victor shook his head and stood. โ€œWell, I saw you sitting here and thought Iโ€™d at least say goodbye.โ€

She stood with him and extended her hand. โ€œFor what itโ€™s worth, Iโ€™m sorry things didnโ€™t go as planned this weekend.โ€

Her fingers were long, elegant. Just like the woman. Disappointment saying goodbye was an emotion he had no business feeling. Yet there it was, like a lump in his chest.

โ€œAre you?โ€

Her smile cracked. โ€œNo. But it seemed the right thing to say. I am sorry for the heartache. Thatโ€™s never easy, even if itโ€™s for the right reason.โ€

Victor realized he was still shaking her hand and let go.

โ€œGoodbye, Victor. Good luck to you.โ€

โ€œGoodbye, Shannon.โ€ And because it was the appropriate thing to do once you said goodbye, Victor walked away. When he turned to take a last look, Shannon sharply moved her gaze to her coffee.

*****

Excerpt:

Averyโ€™s head shot up at the sound of a female voice calling her name.

โ€œLori?โ€

Oh, damnโ€ฆ

When Lori was at their table, Avery detached from Liamโ€™s side and stood for a hug. โ€œWhat are you doing here? Whereโ€™s Reed?โ€

Lori eyed Liam while she answered the questions. โ€œReedโ€™s on his way down. Weโ€™re going out to dinner. Wanted a drink first.โ€

What were the chances of Lori excusing herself before Avery was forced to make an introduction?

Lori reached out a hand toward Liam. โ€œIโ€™m Lori.โ€

Liam stood; a broad smile matched his broad chest. โ€œLiam Holt.โ€ Once he released Loriโ€™s hand, he pulled out a bar stool. โ€œSit, we just ordered drinks.โ€

Avery wanted to elbow his ribs.

Instead, she smiled.

Liam signaled for Nikki.

โ€œLiam, huh? Avery hasnโ€™t mentioned you.โ€

He pulled Averyโ€™s chair closer to his and waited for her to sit. โ€œWe havenโ€™t known each other long.โ€

Lori sent a questioning look to Avery. Instead of adding to Liamโ€™s explanation.

โ€œIโ€™ve known Lori for a few years. We live in the same building.โ€

โ€œWhat do you do, Liam?โ€

Small talk โ€ฆ is that what this was going to be?

Lori signaled Reed when he walked in the door. โ€œThis is my husband.โ€

Avery laughed. โ€œYou love saying that, donโ€™t you?โ€

Lori nodded.

โ€œTheyโ€™re newlyweds,โ€ Avery explained.

Once again Liam stood when Reed approached the table.

โ€œLook who I found,โ€ Lori said.

Reed kissed Averyโ€™s cheek. โ€œI havenโ€™t seen you here in a while.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s because you two never come up for air,โ€ Avery teased.

โ€œThis is Liam โ€ฆ Averyโ€™s friend.โ€ Yeah, Lori wanted more details.

The men shook hands.

โ€œHave I ever met one of your friends?โ€ he asked.

Avery glared. โ€œSmooth, Reed โ€ฆ really smooth.โ€

Lori nudged her husbandโ€™s arm. โ€œStop teasing.โ€ She turned her focus on Liam. โ€œAvery keeps her private life private.โ€

Avery tried not to flinch when Liam placed a hand over hers. โ€œIโ€™ve figured that out recently.โ€

โ€œHow did you two meet?โ€ Reed asked.

Avery said โ€œthe gymโ€ at the same time Liam said โ€œa bar.โ€

Loriโ€™s lawyer radar spiked. Avery saw it in her eyes. โ€œThose two things are worlds apart.โ€

She caught Liamโ€™s hand and squeezed.

โ€œThe first time I saw you was at Pugโ€™s Bar. I approached you at the gym.โ€

โ€œI knew it. That was you at Pugโ€™s. How did you figure out where I worked out?โ€ Sheโ€™d been asking herself that question for over a week.

โ€œThat wasnโ€™t hard. Leslie had a gym bag.โ€

โ€œWhoโ€™s Leslie?โ€ Lori asked.

Avery didnโ€™t look away from Liam. โ€œA friend. So your job at the gym wasnโ€™t on accident?โ€

โ€œI might have approached Brenda about a side job so I could meet you.โ€

Averyโ€™s jaw dropped.

โ€œWhoโ€™s Brenda?โ€ Reed asked.

โ€œThe owner of the gym,โ€ Avery and Liam said at the same time. โ€œHow did you know I was there on Tuesday and Friday nights?โ€ She wasnโ€™t sure if his actions were exciting or scary.

โ€œAppointment book. Brendaโ€™s office is always open.โ€

โ€œWait, wait, wait.โ€ Lori placed a hand between the two of theirs. โ€œYou see Avery in a bar. You search out a location of her gym, follow her to it, get a job there, and now youโ€™re both here having drinks?โ€

Liam offered a brief, unapologetic nod.

Lori grabbed Averyโ€™s hand. โ€œHow well do you know this guy?โ€

Avery liked the gleam in Liamโ€™s eyes. โ€œHeโ€™s safe.โ€

โ€œWhat he just described is a little too close to stalking for my taste.โ€

Reed placed a hand on Loriโ€™s shoulder. โ€œSimmer down, Counselor. If Liam had an ulterior motive, he wouldnโ€™t have told us all that.โ€

โ€œI wanted to meet you,โ€ Liam said.

“Yeah, well, youโ€™ve met her.โ€ Lori wasnโ€™t happy.

Nikki showed up with Averyโ€™s and Liamโ€™s drinks.

โ€œMy usual, Nikki,โ€ Lori told her.

โ€œHon, our reservations are in thirty minutes. Maybe we should go.โ€

Lori looked at Reed like he was crazy. โ€œWe arenโ€™t leaving him with her. He could be a sociopath.”

Liam smiled, his eyes crinkling with amusement. โ€œIโ€™m not.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s what they all say.โ€

Avery put a free hand in the air. โ€œChill, Lori.โ€

Avery realized that her other hand had somehow ended up back in Liamโ€™s. His thumb stroked the underside of her wrist in a strangely calming way.

โ€œDo you want a drink, Reed?โ€ Nikki was still standing there, watching the four of them.

โ€œNo, thank you. Weโ€™re leaving.โ€

Lori pushed back her chair. โ€œWeโ€™re going to talk about this later,โ€ she warned Avery. โ€œAnd you โ€ฆ just so you know, Iโ€™m an attorney, and my big, burly husband here is in private security. He has even bigger friends.โ€

Liam reached into his back pocket and removed his wallet. From it, he pulled out what looked like a business card. โ€œI have nothing to hide.โ€

Lori glanced at it briefly before Reed snatched it from her fingertips. โ€œCโ€™mon. Letโ€™s leave them to their date.โ€

Liam stood again and shook Reedโ€™s hand before he ushered Lori out of the bar.

โ€œThat was intense.โ€

โ€œMy friends are protective.โ€

โ€œUnderstatement.โ€

โ€œYou really went through all that just to meet me?โ€

Liam picked up his cocktail for the first time. โ€œWorked, didnโ€™t it?โ€

Avery let loose his hand and lifted her glass to his. โ€œYes, it did.โ€

Half Empty

by Catherine Bybee

Release Date: July 31, 2018

Publisher: Montlake Romance

Blurb:

Trina Petrovโ€™s marriage-by-contract was only meant to be temporary. But when tragedy strikes, Trina is left one of the wealthiest women in the world. To recover from the shock, she takes some time off in Italy, swearing not to fall for any men while there. But that doesnโ€™t mean she canโ€™t fall for anyoneย on the trip homeย .ย .ย .

Country-music superstar Wade Thomas is lying low in a hotel bar when he gets the cold shoulder from the woman next to him. Heโ€™s used to fans fawning at his boots, and Trina is a refreshing changeโ€”so is the fact that she has no idea who he is.

As things begin to heat up, Trina discovers that the circumstances of her late husbandโ€™s death are not what they seemed. Now sheโ€™s in trouble, and Wade isnโ€™t about to let her out of his sight. Getting close to love and danger could get them killed .ย .ย . or it could sweep them both off their feet.

*****

Excerpt:

They closed the bar and took their last round to the hotel lobby.

Wade had to admit he was a bit more than tipsy, and Trina wasnโ€™t exactly sober. Sheโ€™d tucked her feet under her on the lobby sofa as she described Venice in a way that made him want to visit.

โ€œThere isnโ€™t one car?โ€ he asked.

โ€œNo place for them. You only get around on foot or boat. Which is probably best to help counter the pasta you consume while youโ€™re there.โ€

โ€œSo why did you pick Venice?โ€

Her eyes drifted away, something Wade had noticed happened a lot when she was lost in thought. A hint of sorrow quickly came and went, almost as if she caught herself. The smile she flashed felt forced. โ€œI wanted isolation so I could study.โ€

โ€œStudy?โ€ She rattled off something that went completely over his head.

Her dark brown eyes glistened with her smile. โ€œIโ€™m learning Italian.โ€

Wade blew out a breath. โ€œOh, thank God. I thought maybe that last beer was one too many.โ€

โ€œI like languages.โ€

โ€œAs in many?โ€

โ€œA few.โ€

He was happy to speak English. โ€œIโ€™m impressed.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t be. Most Europeans are fluent in a minimum of two languages.โ€

โ€œAre you from Europe?โ€

โ€œNo. Born and raised in Southern California. My grandparents on my motherโ€™s side are from Mexico. Spanish was always spoken in our home.โ€

โ€œSo you speak Spanish as well?โ€ He squirmed in his chair.

โ€œYup.โ€

โ€œNow Iโ€™m feelinโ€™ a bit inferior.โ€

โ€œLanguage is my hidden talent,โ€ she said.

โ€œSo how did you end up in Texas?โ€

Her gaze met his before she wrinkled her nose and gave a quick shake of the head. โ€œItโ€™s a long story.โ€

โ€œWhich is your way of saying donโ€™t pry.โ€

She stretched out her arms. โ€œItโ€™s my way of saying that weโ€™ve had a pleasant conversation, and bringing up my recent move will change all that. Iโ€™d just as soon keep this light.โ€

Wade wasnโ€™t expecting her reply. โ€œNow youโ€™ve piqued my interest.โ€

โ€œAnother time,โ€ she said.

He offered a smile that usually had women crawling all over him. โ€œAm I going to have that chance?โ€

โ€œChance for what?โ€

โ€œAnother conversation.โ€

Her eyes bored into him as if he wasnโ€™t the sharpest tool in the shed. โ€œI told you, Iโ€™m not interested.โ€

He lifted one eyebrow, flashed a dimple. โ€œWhat if I told you I was rich?โ€

She burst out in laughter.

His smile fell.

โ€œSorryโ€ฆโ€ She appeared to pull in her mirth. โ€œYouโ€™re gonna have to do better than money.โ€

โ€œGood lord, woman.โ€

โ€œSorry.โ€

He scratched his head. โ€œIโ€™m famous.โ€

She bit her lip. โ€œThat explains the arrogance.โ€

Wade placed a hand on his wounded chest. โ€œI am not.โ€

Trina tossed her head back, and her deep laugh filled the empty lobby. โ€œMy name is Wade Thomas, you donโ€™t know who I am?โ€ Her mimicry of him was off by several octaves.

Her laughter tickled his gut.

โ€œI can teach you the two-step.โ€

She pinched her lips together, trying to contain herself.

His pride was starting to dim.

โ€œIโ€™m not bad looking.โ€

She looked him up and down โ€ฆ twice. โ€œIโ€™ll give you that.โ€

He lifted both hands in the air. โ€œFinally.โ€

For the span of a full minute, she stared. Her smile slowly started to fall, and he knew she was talking herself out of dating him.

โ€œTell you what. Iโ€™m flying home tomorrow. Private charter, because Iโ€™m rich, famous, and arrogant.โ€ He moaned on that last word.

โ€œAnd good-looking.โ€

Now they were getting somewhere.

โ€œI can give you a lift home.โ€

Trina blew out a breath. โ€œIโ€™m avoiding going home,โ€ she reminded him.

โ€œAnd I was thinking I needed a quick stop in Nassau โ€ฆ where the plane might not be able to leave right away. That tropical depressed storm and all.โ€

She pointed a finger in his direction. โ€œI like the way you think.โ€

While this isn’t my first of her books (LOVE theย Weekday Brides and Most Likely To series), it is my first in the Not Quite series.ย  And I couldn’t tell you why!ย  I love everything I’ve read by her andย Not Quite Crazyย is no different ๐Ÿ™‚

Not Quite Crazy

Not Quite series

by Catherine Bybee

Release Date: March 6, 2018

Publisher: Montlake Romance

Blurb:

No one drives in New York City. Everyone knows that, including California transplant Rachel Price. But that doesnโ€™t stop her from driving into the city. From Connecticut. Every single morning. Rain or shineโ€ฆor snow.

When she runs the charismatic and good-looking Jason Fairchild off the road, their immediate spark is met with bad timing. There is also one tiny little detail: Jason is her boss. And a woman as intelligent and dedicated to her career as Rachel knows not to date her boss.

As CEO of a private jet company, Jason Fairchild is more used to flying than driving. But if he hadnโ€™t chosen to drive home one night, he wouldnโ€™t have met the slowestโ€”and most irresistibleโ€”driver in the entire metro area. Jason has never had time for love. Or dating. Or really anything that doesnโ€™t involve work. But when he finds out that Rachel is the newest superstar in his marketing department, he canโ€™t help wondering if fate has other plansโ€ฆ

*****

Message From the Author

Inย Not Quite Crazy, California transplant, Rachel Price, doesnโ€™t understand the ramifications of driving into Manhattan from Connecticut every day; in every type of weatherโ€ฆespecially snow. When she runs the charming Jason Fairchild off the road, sparks fly. Too bad Jason is her new boss and dating him is out of the question. Everyone knows itโ€™s occupational suicide to date your boss.

Determined to keep her distance romantically, the two dive into a friendship. It isnโ€™t long before those sparks ignite and neither one of them can deny their attraction. Throw in a teenage ward that Rachel has taken on after the death of her best friend, and biological grandparents that seek custody; and this heart warming love story is bound to whisk you away.

While I was writingย Not Quite Crazyย I took an impromptu trip to Manhattan last March. I purposely chose a winter month where I might be able to absorb what it felt like to be in the city when snow covered the ground. That might sound silly for those of you who live in the city, but for me, a woman who has lived in Southern California since she was eighteen years old, I had no idea just how snow impacts day to day life.

On the drive in from the airport, I was immediately struck by the bikes chained to posts and buried by snow. I observed a man digging his car out and effectively covering his neighborโ€™s car in the process. The plows did a great job of clearing the path for those cars actually moving, but did an equally fantastic job of making sure some vehicles couldnโ€™t move for days. Trash piled up on the sidewalks would have to wait to be picked up until the thaw. It was astonishing to see. But the best experience for me, and one that made it into the pages ofย Not Quite Crazy, came when I took my first ride on the subway. You see, I was on my way uptown, from downtown to meet with my agent. Keep in mind, Manhattan is only five miles long. But it was St. Patrickโ€™s Day and I completely forgot about the parade. I ordered an Uber, as one does, and sat bumper to bumper for nearly two hours. After arriving extremely late to my lunch, my wise and savvy agent gave me the instructions I needed to ride the subway back to my downtown hotel. Iโ€™m a grown woman, riding a subway shouldnโ€™t intimidate meโ€ฆ but if I were honest, it did. So, with my purse strapped to my shoulder and zipped on the inside of my jacket, and my eyes wide open, I crowded into the underground train along with just about everyone else in the city.ย ย Street performers jumped onto the car and started singing for change. Tourists chatted enthusiastically while locals looked bored with the whole process.

Rachel, my heroine inย Not Quite Crazyย is an extension of everyone I know that has lived in California. Here on the west coast we all have cars. Weโ€™re in them all the time. Public transportation is a joke when the distance between downtown LA and Orange County is so far away. The concept of always relying on public transportation to get to work every single day isnโ€™t something most Southern Californianโ€™s do. So when Rachel showed up on the page, I made sure she personified my own stubbornness about independently driving to and from wherever she needed to go. Even if it takes her two hours more than it should.

I hope you all enjoy this final chapter in the Not Quite Series and find room on your keeper shelf forย Not Quite Crazy.

Cheers,

Catherine

Excerpt:

Rachel found the stack of mail on the dining room table. She fingered through a few bills and tossed the junk to the side to add to the recycle bin. The box Owen had spoken of didnโ€™t have a mailing label. In fact, all that was written on the plain brown box was her name, her first name.

She peeled away the tape, not knowing what to expect. Once she folded the lid back, she saw a handwritten envelope on top of a white canvas bag. It took a little effort to lift the noisy bag from the boxโ€”the sound of metal hitting metal struck her as odd.

Chains.

Chains for the tires on her car.

โ€œWhoโ€ฆ?โ€

She opened the note and a second paper fell out.

Rachel

Thank you for braving this stranger in a storm and keeping me from frostbite.
Welcome to Connecticut.

Jason

Below his name was a phone number

Something inside her stomach flipped, the buzz a teenage girl feels when she notices a popular boy watching her from the other side of the classroom. Or maybe she was reading into it. Maybe this was just a thank-you, a friendly gesture from a grateful, stranded traveler.

Her cheeks warmed.

Assuming he gave her a mobile number, Rachel decided to send a text.

Hello Jason. I received your gift. They were incredibly thoughtful. Thank you.

She read her note over, twice, then pressed โ€œSend.โ€ Off it went, in wherever notes went as they traveled faster than Superman in cyberspace.

The phone in her hand buzzed, reminding her she was holding it.

Is this Rachel?

She grinned.

Do you leave gifts on everyoneโ€™s doorstep in town?

Dot. Dot. Dot. It is nearly Christmas.

Was he flirting? It had been some time since sheโ€™d sent a text to anyone outside of the friend zone, so she couldnโ€™t tell.

So you double as Connecticutโ€™s Santa Claus?

Shhh. Donโ€™t tell anyone. Itโ€™s a secret.

Well, he wasnโ€™tย notย flirting.

Iโ€™ll keep my mouth closed on one condition.

Oh? Whatโ€™s that?

I want to meet Vixen. Sheโ€™s always been my favorite.

I thought Vixen was a he.

She giggled.

A boy named Vixen. Thatโ€™s just cruel.

Good point. Iโ€™ll see what I can do. The team is on a strict curfew until after the
holiday.

Rachel found a rolling eye emoji.

Review:

As she’s shown time and again, Bybee is a wonder at creating characters you connect with.ย  Rachel is kind, responsible, and strong.ย  She struggles when she finds out that the hottie she helped is her boss, but Jason proves pretty hard to resist.ย  Because, for being a billionaire CEO, Jason is down-to-earth, caring, and dependable … he’s also pretty set on getting what he wants.ย  (I’m pretty sure their courtship is one of the sweetest things I’ve read in a long time!)

I also fell for their assorted friends & family.ย  They are all friendly, kind, and willing to pitch in to do what needs to be done.ย  While there is drama, some that you see coming and some that is unexpected (but none of it causing strife in the actual romance which I appreciate), it’s never over the top.ย  Instead the struggle just helps to deepen their assorted connections and intensify an already emotional story.

As much about friends and family as it is a love story,ย Not Quite Crazy continues Bybee’s streak of delivering must-read stories full of love in a multitude of forms.

Review:

My favorite part about this story is how Bybee took what would seem like it should be a big suspense story and made it all about the characters. ย While we do get the resolution to Jo’s dad’s death,ย Making It Rightย gives us a better insight into what makes Jo tick outside of that. ย And seeing her fall in love with a really awesome guy!

Jo’s made a good life for herself, even if it isn’t the one she planned. ย She’s a good sherriff and good for the people of her townย –ย firm but with a good heart. ย And it is about time that she found someone who will really appreciate it.

I think Gill is just fabulous for her. ย He lets Jo be her, but he supports her and pushes her when she needs it. ย He’s strong and sure of himself after years as a marine and an agent but he’s not overbearing. ย He’s funny and kind and smart. ย Exactly what tough but sensitive Jo needs.

The whodunit may be a quieter portion of the book than I expected but it isn’t overlooked. ย Bybee does a great job of weaving it into the romance in a way that doesn’t short-change either one. ย And as we find out the why and the who I really enjoyed how it helped to make Jo’s dad into a real human, instead of a virtuous ghost whose shadow Jo had been living under for so long. ย The truth reveals itself slowly through the later part of the book, helping us and her find out what really happened.

After years of worring over her dad’s death, and dealing with some guilt as well, having the answers she needs helps Jo not only deal with her past but be able to mover forward into a new future. ย Maybe one with a big, sexy, tattooed agent in it ๐Ÿ™‚

Well-written as always, Bybee brings another great series to a satisfying close. ย With characters who easily suck you in and a story-line that keeps you glued to the pages, Making It Rightย is another must-read.

(While you’ll miss out a little about how Jo got involved with the FBI by starting here, plus some of the background between the girls, this really can easily stand on its own.)
