End Game

A Kings of Campus Novel

by Monica Murphy

Blurb:

In this fun, sexy college romance, a transfer student finds herself living in a house full of football playersโ€”and falling for the one she knows she shouldnโ€™t want.

Everleigh

Transferring to UC Santa Mira is supposed to be my ultimate college experienceโ€”until housing falls through at the last minute. So when I overhear a group of guys complaining they need another roommate, I jump at the opportunity.

Theyโ€™re just football players. Even if one of them makes me weak in the knees, it doesnโ€™t mean anything unless I let it. And I wonโ€™t.

We want different things. Wanting each other doesnโ€™t change that.

Nico

Itโ€™s my senior year and final season with the Santa Mira Dolphins. The last thing I need is a distraction, but thatโ€™s exactly what this girl is. Ever is too leggy, too gorgeous, too thoughtfulโ€”and a whole lot of too much that gets under my skin.

I guess I get under hers too. I canโ€™t help myself.

We live together. That alone makes it a bad ideaโ€ฆbut I never could resist a little trouble.

Review:

I’ve never read a book by Murphy before but I see her stuff everywhere and End Game, first in a new series, seemed like the perfect place to start. I enjoyed the characters being flawed, making mistakes but also being willing to admit it and try to do better. I do wish they’d spent more time together on the page so we could see them develop a connection, to realize that maybe they were willing to chance getting involved with each other. It was a pretty big roadblock to their relationship so being there for that was pretty important, I think.

The friendship between the guys and with Everleigh was a definite highlight. Picturing their lives together, including yoga with a bunch of football players, was a hoot. I love that they become like a family unit, caring for each other. Giving each other support, but also a hard time when they need it. As well as a smack when they need that as well.

As the first book, in addition to the main romance there was a bit of time setting up characters for future books. And there is definitely A LOT there that I’m looking forward to. I really hope she gives Dollar a fair shake. He’s so earnest and … in need of someone to love him and let him love them back. And Sienna definitely needs someone who will be the guy she deserves. As a first read for this author, I’m intrigued and can see why she’s so popular.

*sigh* Waiting is hard, y’all! When’s the next book coming?

King

Pittsburgh Titans series

by Sawyer Bennett

Blurb:

Jack Kingston is known for his dominant playing skills on the ice, but off, heโ€™s a down-to-earth guy who values a true connection over a meaningless hookup.

I love being a member of the Pittsburgh Titans, even if my teammates are constantly ribbing me about women who they claim are throwing themselves all over me. Could I go for the easy lay? Sure, but thatโ€™s not my style. Iโ€™m more of long-term kind of guy. Instead, Iโ€™m going to keep doing what I do bestโ€”killing it out on the ice. Everything else will fall into placeโ€ฆeventually.

That time comes sooner than expected, in the most unlikely of ways. At the rink to watch our goalieโ€™s kids play Peewee hockey, I meet Willa Montreaux and somehow, by the end of that interaction, Iโ€™ve offered to help her coach the Ice Pups. Altruism or were there other intentions in that offer? A little of both, if Iโ€™m being honest.

As the time I spend with Willa increases, I am absolutely certain I want even more. Sheโ€™s gorgeous, sure, but thatโ€™s superficial. Willa is also funny, loving, determined and smart. SO smart. Doctor smart. Probably too intelligent for a jock like me, but thatโ€™s not going to stop me from shooting my shot.

Not looking for anything more than a fling and concerned that sheโ€™s too old for me, Willa doesnโ€™t want to venture into anything serious. Iโ€™m willing to put in the work and give her the space she needs to come to terms with the fact that the connection we have is far more than physical. Willa and I are end game, but Iโ€™m willing to play into overtime if thatโ€™s what it takes to walk away with her by my side.

Review:

Willa is hesitant to get involved again when her history hasn’t exactly been filled with good men. And King being 8 years younger doesn’t help her confidence in their suitability. But with patience and King shows that he’s all in.

He’s there for her as a coach for her niece’s peewee team. He’s there making calling and texting to show he’s thinking of her. He’s there to make a stand with her jerk of an ex. He’s there to bring her in to his world, with his friends and teammates. He also shows her how much he cares about those people. But that big heart also gets him into a little trouble with Willa.

So while their third act issues were obvious and handled in a predictable way, I enjoyed seeing King and Willa make their way to a HEA. It was nice to have a young, good-looking guy that was all about relationships and not the puck bunnies. And a decidedly smart, strong, level-headed woman who shows that she can make mistakes as well. And maybe just needs a little some help getting out of her way. (I do wish we’d seen more of Willa with her sister, but maybe she’ll show up in her own book ๐Ÿ™‚ )

In The Details

Mile High Billionaires

by Julia Wolf

Blurb:

Two strangers at a beat down biker bar. A hot night twisted up in the sheets. Absolutely no strings attached.

My life is too complicated for more than that. Besides, what would I do with a possessive, demanding, sexy as hell motorcycle man? Especially one who’s younger than me.

As an executive with a demanding career and single mom to a three-year-old little girl, my life is planned down to the minute, but everyone knows what they say about the best laid plans…

When Jake Hayes walks into Rossi Motors looking for a partnership between our two companies, I’m lost for words. It turns out, my motorcycle man looks just as good wearing a finely tailored suit as he does straddling a bike in his leathers.

Now that he’s found me, he wants more hot, steamy nights with me. He’s persistent and I’m…tempted.

I try to keep him at arm’s length, but he slowly draws me in with his searing kisses and lighthearted teasing. It doesn’t hurt that he’s sweet and gentle with my little girl either. But then, he has plenty of experience with kids since he has a daughter of his own.

Jake wants me and all the baggage I come with. I want him too, but my heart’s been too battered to give it away easily.

If I don’t choose, Jake just might take matters into his own hands and steal it anyway.

Review:

This is only the second book I’ve read by this author and as with Dear Grumpy Boss I liked it but really wanted to give both of them a talking to. Which I guess makes them more realistic, right? Because very few of us don’t have moments, in particular when it comes to relationships, where we need that.

The first chapter really set the tone for me. I enjoyed the relationship between the two and how they interacted. I liked Clara – her dedication to her family and her job, her confidence in dragging herself back from a bad relationship. And Jake definitely had his moment – his relationship with his family and the support & care he shows Clara at times. But while there were a lot of things I enjoyed, there were a few things that bothered me.

I think there should have been a bit more of a transition from not doing relationships to “I want to date”. I get that there is a draw between them and we do get a peek into their reasons, especially as we get to know them, but it just needed just a little more to be believable. I also think the man needed to do a bit more groveling about some of the things he said about her early on. They were pretty awful but he tries to play it off and it didn’t work for me.

Clara had been hurt in the past, badly, and has some trust issues so I totally understand why she reacts the way she does at the end. I think in a normal situation their third act problems would be a little less of an issue but there’s a lot of hurt in her and she’s been struggling the whole book with trusting their situation. It’s good it happens as it gives all of them a chance to decide what they truly want, out of their relationship and out of life.

With a lot of heat & spice, a bit of angst, and family members & friends that add the feels & fun, In the Details is a good reminder that I enjoy Wolf’s writing. As long as I remember that I’m going to have moments of frustration at her characters doing real peoply things ๐Ÿ™‚

The One I Didn’t See Coming

Plain Daisy Ranch series

by Piper Rayne

Blurb:

Itโ€™s the classic storyโ€”girl returns to her hometown only to end up moving in with her high school crush, who she hates.

Returning to Willowbrook was my only option after Chicago chewed me up and spit me out. Technically, it wasnโ€™t Chicagoโ€™s fault. It was his faultโ€”the man I thought I knew who turned out to be a liar.

My older sister, always the one to swoop in and fix things, secured me a job as a yoga instructor on her fiancรฉโ€™s family ranch. As my self-assigned protector, sheโ€™s keeping one eye on me and one eye on Emmett Noughton, her fiancรฉโ€™s brother.

Heโ€™s the charming, fun-loving, take-life-as-it-comes kind of guy, and once upon a time, his name was scribbled in my notebooks. Back then, I was invisible to him. Now, heโ€™s looking at me like Iโ€™m the only thing in the room. But he lost his chance with me a long time ago.

Itโ€™s easy to keep him at armโ€™s length and nurse the grudge Iโ€™ve held onto for years. Until the house Iโ€™m staying in sells, and I have nowhere to go except his house. Now, resisting him isnโ€™t just difficultโ€”itโ€™s impossible.

Review:

I loved Emmett & Briar together. Her dislike for him just makes him all that more interested in winning her over. He turns up the charm and slowly begins to change her mind. And even tho he believes he’s not interested in something serious, and she’s reeling from a failed relationship, they find themselves struggling to resist their attraction. Quickly moving into territory they never expected.

Emmett may be seen as the non-serious Noughton but there’s a lot of depth to him as well. He’s got ideas and dreams, just needs to have someone believe in him. As Briar & Emmett spend more time together, she shows herself to be that person. And the more time passes, the more her support, humor, and sass has him thinking that maybe he could be the settling down kind. Where his support, humor, and caring heart has her thinking that maybe there’s more to him than she thought.

A book with Piper Rayne on the cover is a must read for me and I don’t even have to see the blurb first. They always deliver characters just brimming with heart and humor, with attitude and charm, and their HEAs are so satisfying with all the feels and believability that you could ask for. Looking forward to many more stories to come.

Cash

A Lucky River Ranch novel

by Jessica Peterson

Blurb:

Butting heads leads to knocking boots in this wildly sexy enemies-to-lovers, grumpy/sunshine, small town cowboy romance by Jessica Peterson.

My dad and I have been estranged for years. But as his only living relative, itโ€™s no surprise I inherit his massive cattle ranch when he dies. Something that is a surprise? The stipulation in his will, which requires me to live on the ranch and actively manage it for a year before I can access my inheritance money.

I havenโ€™t stepped foot in Hartsville, Texas, population one thousand, since my parents split when I was six. Now a city girl through and through, I never imagined having to move back to cowboy country. But I need the money to invest in my company, and a girlโ€™s gotta do what a girlโ€™s gotta do.

Thereโ€™s just one giant roadblock to my plan: the ranchโ€™s foreman, grumpy cowboy Cash Rivers. I donโ€™t care how good he looks in his Wranglers and chaps. Heโ€™s rude, heโ€™s growly, and he wants me gone. Iโ€™d fire him in a heartbeat, but I need this cowboy to teach me the ropes of running a ranch.

Weโ€™re enemies from the get-go. But turns out, Cash is really good at this ranch thing. Heโ€™s got strong hands, an intelligent mind, and letโ€™s just say everything really is bigger in Texas. Working alongside him leads to conversations beneath the stars. Throw in some cheek-to-cheek dancing at the local dive bar, and it all feels so right that I start to fall in love with life on the ranch. And maybe with him, too.

But my stay in Hartsville is only temporary. And you know what they say about cowboys: they may break horses, but they also break hearts. If only Cash hadnโ€™t already lassoed mineโ€ฆ

Review:

Y’all, I’ve never read a Peterson book before and I’m super glad that Cash was the first. Cash & Mollie are a lot of fun together. I liked that while they rubbed each other wrong at the beginning it really didn’t take them long to develop a more positive relationship. Peterson could easily have leaned into the enemies-to-lovers trope but chose to pulled back a little there and I enjoyed that it was lighter on the angst.

Cash is a good person and while he’s disappointed by the way things have turned out he just doesn’t have it in him to take it out on Mollie for long. Drawn to her gumption and how she obviously cares about others, including him, Cash is there to support her too, to help her come to terms with her feelings about her dad, and to be there as she figures out where her heart lies.

It may be predictable but it still has all the feels … and all the dirty talking cowboy that a reader could ask for. I’m looking forward to seeing what Peterson has in store for the rest of the Rivers boys. She’s definitely teed us up for a good one with Wyatt ๐Ÿ™‚

Review:

I’ll admit, I wasn’t sure how much I was going to feel about this one. I liked Sutton but Flynn came off a little more a*hole than alphahole but I found myself quickly warming up to him. He’s gruff but he’s also smart, caring, and … good with his hands ๐Ÿ˜‰ Being alone together in the jungle means that Sutton & Flynn have to address the animosity that has been brewing between each other. And face some interesting truths about feelings that are at the core of their sparks. But what does it mean when they are home again? They have a lot of reasons for what happened in the jungle to stay in the jungle but they quickly find themselves struggling to keep things separate.

I’m amused at how easily their issues are resolved, because honestly it is all so obvious, but it’s definitely a very real reaction to the situations they find themselves in. And as with all romances, it’s not about the HEA but about the journey and theirs is sexy, funny, and fun. But what else would you expect for this author?

Foster is a must read if you like dirty talking heroes who can back it up in the bedroom … and the living room … and the shower … and the sassy heroines that keep them on their toes. With this wrap up for the Steeles, she gives us hints at the possibilities of many more stories to come and I’m here for ALL of them.

Hard to Take

Denver Kodiaks #2

by Piper Lawson

Blurb:

My fake boyfriend is nowโ€ฆmy new roommate?

Miles Garrett, pro basketball player and star of every one of my fantasies, has decided Iโ€™m moving in with him.

My brotherโ€™s teammate has always protected me out of loyalty. He makes me feel like everything will be okay even when my life is on fire.

But when he looks at me, I wonder what it would be like if he was truly mine. If I had the dream life and dream job and the dream guy.

Did I mention we canโ€™t keep our hands off each other?

I hoped the proximity would get him out of my system. Turns out sharing a bedroom wall changes hungry looks and brushes in the hall into sweaty sessions and late-night confessions.

Miles keeps my secrets and sees me like no one else.

Too bad the playoffs are coming up and my brother doesnโ€™t know.

The truth is going to be hard to take.

Hard to Take is a pro basketball romance with banter, spice, and all the swoony vibes! Itโ€™s the second book in the Denver Kodiaks series. Miles and Brookeโ€™s addictive story begins in Hard to Fake and concludes in Hard to Break.

Review:

We pick up pretty much where Hard to Fake left off, with a misunderstanding on why Miles had to leave Brooke in Vail. She’s still having to figure out what she’s going to do with her business and he’s worried about his grandmother & his attraction to his friend’s sister. It doesn’t take long for them to cross paths and find themselves back where they were before – in each other’s lives and in each other’s beds. But what happens when their feelings come into play?

Loving Miles & Brooke’s story – the sass, the steam, and the care. Brooke is savvy and hardworking, putting her experience with creating her own social media brand to work for herself, her friends, and her family. Miles recognizes how important the team is to himself and his friends, his career and his grandmother’s future. But he also finds Brooke way too hard to resist and is willing to take a chance to see what it could mean.

I like that Lawson doesn’t take it in a too predictable direction. There’s obviously going to be issues, because otherwise we wouldn’t need another story to wrap things up, but about halfway through I was guessing what the cliff hanger would be and I was wrong, which is always a treat. Really looking forward to finding out how everything wraps up!

Beating Heart

Magnolia Falls series

by Laura Pavlov

Blurb:

From the moment my son came into the worldโ€”my life changed in the best way.

Iโ€™d found my purpose.

My reason.

My heart beats for this kid every damn day.

My company is thriving, and life is good.

But then Emerson Chadwick happened.

It must be the universeโ€™s way of messing with me when I least expect it.

Our townโ€™s new pediatrician is gorgeous and brilliant andโ€”complicated.

Iโ€™m not looking for complications.

To make matters worse, my little boy is crazy about her, and now sheโ€™s moved in next door.

Sheโ€™s everywhere I turn.

I canโ€™t stay away no matter how hard I try.

But Emerson isnโ€™t here to stay.

This is just a temporary stop for her.

And now my heart beats for her in a way I never expected.

Falling for the girl next door is a bad idea.

Loving herโ€ฆ well, thatโ€™s as easy as breathing.

Review:

I’ve only read one of Pavlov’s books and I’m pretty sure I had no idea what I was missing out on. I loved Nash & Emerson together. There’s a delightful amount of sparks and all the feels that you could ask for. They find a rhythm that is just the sweetest and his group of friends is just so supportive, smart-mouthed, & fun. They welcome Emerson with open arms and all the love they have. (I’m gonna have to make sure that I go back and find ALL their stories.)

Pavlov could have easily gone for all the drama but instead she balances it perfectly. Showing them addressing their issues in a mature and realistic way. Facing their hurts and fears and problems with love and care, getting support where and when they need it. If everything she writes is like this, I’m pretty sure I have quite a few more books to add to my TBR pile!

Unbreakable Love

A Kelley Family Novel

by Stacey Lynn

Blurb:

A small town, single dad, forbidden romance from bestselling author, Stacey Lynn.

I donโ€™t think anyone wouldโ€™ve chosen to be a single dad before their driverโ€™s license even arrived in the mail, but that was the curveball that life threw at me. While my classmates were partying it up at football games and Prom, I was dealing with ear infections and learning how to be the best kind of dad like my father was to me.

I all but gave up on trusting a woman again and finding love as I had more important

responsibilities: being a proud girl dad to Josie, helping my family out on their ranch, and starting my own construction business.

Then Penelope Pesco shows up and kills my resolve to remain alone. Sheโ€™s not only the most alluring woman Iโ€™ve ever met, but a forbidden one too: Sheโ€™s my daughterโ€™s new teacher.

Sheโ€™s also my new neighbor.

Sweet Penny is pure temptation in one gorgeous package with her sunflower blonde hair and beguiling sky-blue eyes, and Iโ€™m having a hard time staying away. Keeping myeight-year-old daughter from falling in love with her is hard enough. We both don’t need to fall in love with her and end up with our hearts broken.

Then tragedy strikes my family in an entirely shocking way, and reality hits. Lifeโ€™s too short to keep running and living in fear. This is my chance and Iโ€™m grabbing it with both hands.

I can only hope I havenโ€™t screwed everything up. Hopefully, thereโ€™s a chance I can fix what

Iโ€™ve broken. Josie and I love and adore Penny and can only hope that our unbreakable love isnโ€™t shattered beyond repair.

Review:

This is the first in this series for me (and only 3rd or 4th by this author) so I don’t have a lot to compare it to or any previous feeling for any of the characters. I liked Gavin and it helped getting his perspective so I was willing to give him a little grace – plus, his daughter is adorable – but if I was Penny I’m not sure how many second chances I would have given the man. He was rude WAY too many times to count as he struggled with his attraction to his daughter’s new teacher. And his new neighbor. Burned once, he finds it difficult to trust but the draw to Penny proves hard to resist.

Penny is a wonderful teacher and has a big heart. And a huge propensity to forgive, which is lucky for Gavin after he treats her poorly on more than one occasion. Sure, he apologizes each time and eventually shows himself to be the decent guy he is, but it does take a bit … he may be worth the wait tho ๐Ÿ™‚

Unbreakable Love is a sweet read, with an enjoyable cast of characters, a sweetheart of a kid, a good balance between lighthearted and serious, and just a touch of heat. With the latest in the Kelley Family series, Lynn gives readers a good way to wrap up their summer beach reads.

(There are a few moments that I’m guessing would be beneficial to have read the previous book but Lynn does a good job of explaining what’s going on that it isn’t necessary.)

Author Info:

Stacey Lynn likes her coffee with a dash of sugar, her heroes with a side of bossy, and her wine a deep shade of red.

The author of over thirty romance novels, many of which have been best-selling titles on Amazon, AppleBooks, and Barnes & Noble, she loves being able to turn her vivid imagination into a career that brings entertainment and joy to her readers. Focused on sports romance and emotional, small-town romance, she also loves stretching herself in different genres.

Born in Texas and raised in the Midwest, she now makes her home in North Carolina and loves all things Southern. Together with her ultimate tall, dark, and handsome hero, she has four children. Her life is a chaotic mess that fights with her Type-A, list-making, neurotically organized preferences and she wouldn’t have it any other way.

Fumbled Arrangement

The Atlanta Arrows #3

by S. Jones

Blurb:

What started out as a night of fun at a Vegas hotspot somehow turned into saying โ€œI Doโ€ by an Elvis impersonator.ย

If you think thatโ€™s bad, it gets worse. My new husband lied to me and told me he ran a not-for-profit. That couldnโ€™t be further from the truth.

Imagine my surprise when I realized I married one of the best tight ends in the league.ย

Did I mention my uncle owns the team?

If you think things couldnโ€™t get any more complicated, our plans to get an annulment are unexpectedly put on hold. So, now Iโ€™m trapped in this unforeseen marriage until we can find a way out. He assured me not to worry, proposing a temporary solutionโ€”move in with him and keep our relationship a secret.ย

Except, the more I get to know my husband, the more I want to stay married, especially when he calls meโ€””his wifeโ€.ย

But life doesnโ€™t always go as planned, especially when my uncle intercepts our news before we have a chance to tell him.ย

Now his spot on the team is at risk, my heart is on the line, and the fallout could cost us everything.

Review:

There’s something endearing about how much Rhett throws himself into this accidental marriage. He feels a connection to Natalie that he can’t explain but that he feels like he must pursue. And while she wants to forget that their marriage ever existed, especially when they realize exactly how complicated it makes their lives, she feels that draw too and doesn’t fight him when he wants to see where it can go.

I think the blurb made me think the uncle-finding-out thing would be a bigger part of the story than it was. It is a concern but the majority of the storage is them spending time together so that when it does happen towards the end of the book they have so much more at stake.

Do I think these two handled their marriage and the issues that it caused in the most mature way possible? No. Do I think that it was realistic, with all of the messiness that comes with real relationships? Definitely. It’s not easy or pretty, but it rarely is.
