Book Review – Color Me Bad

I’m going toย share with everyone a short novella that you’ll want to pick up in preparation for Sharon Sala’s upcoming book, Curl Up & Dye. ย It promises to be quirky, fun and sweet. But first let’s look at Color Me Bad.

cover34555-mediumAn original short story by New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Sharon Sala links to her full-length contemporary womenโ€™s fiction novel, The Curl Up and Dye.

The novella centers around the four women who run the Curl Up and Dye hair salon and their relationships with the quirky customers of small-town Blessings, Georgia. Their meddlesome efforts at match-making run awry, but thereโ€™s always another makeover just around the corner.

This is a fun introduction to the world Sala has created in Blessings, Georgia – it is entertaining and definitely whets the appetite for Curl Up and Dye, coming out in February. Itโ€™s got all of the spunk and spice youโ€™d expect from small-town Southern women, with their smiles and Bless Youโ€™s covering heartbreak and troubles. ย Their humorous antics made me laugh, while I hurt for them at the same time.

Come join me in getting to know the fabulous citizens of Blessings and donโ€™t be surprised if you find yourself anxious to visit again.

Holiday gifts don’t always come in expected packagesโ€ฆespecially in the town of Hope’s Crossing.

No one has ever felt sorry for Genevieve Beaumont. After all, she has everything money can buy. That is, until she discovers her fiancรฉ has been two-timing her and she’s left with two choices: marry the philanderer to please her controlling father or be disinherited and find a means to support herself.

Genevieve’s salvation appears in the most unlikely of prospects: Dylan Caine, a sexy, wounded war vet whose life is as messy as hers. Dylan’s struggling to adjust after his time in Afghanistan, and the last thing he needs is a spoiled socialite learning about the real world for the first time. True, she may have unexpected depths and beauty to match. But he knows he could never be the man she needsโ€ฆand she knows he could never be the man she thinks she wants. So why are they each hoping that a Christmas miracle willl prove them both wrong?

Like Sophia in Brenda Novakโ€™sย Take Me Home for Christmas, Genevieve has a horrible reputation around her small town community โ€“ some of it deserved and some of it not.ย  It is hard but also encouraging to see her stumble around, trying to right some wrongs but to also find out for herself the person she is and the one she could be.ย  Sheโ€™s got a lot of spunk and courage.

Dylan on the other hand is doing a little running, from the truth and life and other people.ย  But, inexplicably drawn to Gen, heโ€™s quickly given a swift kick โ€ฆ and while he might fight it every step, itโ€™s the kick he needs to evaluate his life and where heโ€™s going.ย  Heโ€™s a good man, also courageous and full of fight, but he needs to remember that too.

I absolutely love these two and their journey.ย  And considering how much I enjoyed Charlotte and Spencer inย Willowleaf Lane, it just proves that Thayne has an amazing talent for giving her readers believable, sympathetic, engaging characters. ย I couldnโ€™t put the book down and anxiously turned pages as I waited for Dylan and Gen find their way to their own happy ever after.

This is only my second Raeanne Thayne book, but it definitely wonโ€™t be my last.ย  (And if you havenโ€™t read any of her books you can easily start here.ย  Like a lot of series, Thayne does a great job of filling in all the pertinent details about what has happened before.)ย ย Christmas in Snowflake Canyonย is amazingly sweet and touching and heartwarming and all of those other fuzzy feelings that you want from a great holiday romance.ย  With an endearing cast of characters and a heartfelt story, itโ€™s guaranteed to please anyone looking for a feel good read.

Blog Tour – Tangling with the CEO

Today we get to enjoy some time with the lovely Annie Seaton as she talks about the importance of secondary characters and then we get to peek at her new book, Tangling with the CEO.ย  Enjoy!

*****

In all of my books, and across all of the genres that I write, I love using secondary characters to create and balance the tension and conflict that surrounds the main characters. In Tangling with the CEO, Blakeโ€™s family, particularly his nephews and nieces provide light-hearted moments of fun and laughter, which helps to relieve the instant tension that is between Blake and Ana when they first meet up again.

The fictional town of Nebbiton also has a warm chaotic environment. The elderly folk, including Thelma and Mitzi who became surrogate aunts to Ana after her mother passed, and many other local characters, provide lots of support for her throughout her romance with Blake.

Secondary characters can often paint truer portraits of the main characters than the characters themselves and I used Sienna and Georgie to give more insight into Anaโ€™s character. Sometimes Ana can lose her confidence and her friends are there to bolster her up. (Both of them get their own stories in Books 2 and 3 of this series too!)

The cohesion of the small town, and their love and concern, for Ana and Blake is particularly evident in the final chapters of the story.

I would love to give away a copy of the first book in my Affairs series, Holiday Affair to a reader who tells me who is their favourite character ever and why?

I love hearing from readers!

Book Review – Take Me Home for Christmas

Time for a holiday book review!

*****

cover34814-medium

I have not been shy about sharing my love for Brenda Novakโ€™sโ€œWhiskey Creekโ€ novels โ€“ย When Lightning Strikesย ,ย When Snow Fallsย ,ย When Summer Comesย โ€“ andย Take Me Home for Christmasย doesnโ€™t disappoint.ย  Weโ€™ve gotten to know Ted and Sophia through the rest of the series (although if you havenโ€™t read any of the others, donโ€™t worry) and now we finally get their story.

Christmas is a time for rememberingโ€ฆ

Too bad not all memories are pleasant! Everyone in Whiskey Creek remembers Sophia DeBussi as the town’s Mean Girl. Especially Ted Dixon, whose love she once scorned.

But Sophia has paid the price for her youthful transgressions. The man she did marry was rich and powerful but abusive. So when he goes missing, she secretly hopes he’ll never come backโ€”until she learns that he died running from an FBI probe of his investment firm. Not only has he left Sophia penniless, he’s left her to face all the townspeople he cheated.โ€ฆ

Sophia is reduced to looking for any kind of work to pay the bills and support her daughter. With no other options, she becomes housekeeper for none other than Ted, now a successful suspense writer. He can’t bring himself to turn his back on her, not at Christmas, but he refuses to get emotionally involved. He learned his lesson the last time.

Or will the season of love and forgiveness give them both another chance at happiness?

I will say up front that my only complaint is that we don’t get a better explanation of their past. We were givenย the bits and pieces but I would have liked to have had a full on discussion about exactly what happened and why. We got theย idea, so while Iย wanted Sophia to own up to her reasons, we got enough and really the details donโ€™t impact their current relationship.

Ted was great and I was drawn in by his confusion, hurt and uncertainty, but it was Sophia that I felt for most.ย  I ached for Sophia as she tries to figure out what sheโ€™s going to do now that her life has imploded so dramatically.ย  Sheโ€™s had a very awful life but she managed to grow into an amazing woman and I cheered for her every step of the way.

Weโ€™re also given a look at their friendย Eveโ€™s story as she looks for her own love.ย  I know that Novak will give her a HEA, but it looks like there might be some heartbreak before she gets there.ย  I felt for her so duringย Take Me Home for Christmasย but based on the tidbits that we were given, I think that her path might get more rocky before sheโ€™s done.

As always, Novak gives readers engaging characters, full of heart and humor and sadness, but always so real they could live next door.ย ย Take Me Home for Christmasย is a fantastically sweet read, perfect for the holiday season, reminding us about love, forgiveness, and second-chances.

**And for those new readers –ย Novak does a fantastic job of giving the highlights of what has come before, especiallyย as they impact this story, so if this is your first book youโ€™ll be fine.**

Spotlight – Lynn Raye Harris

Some of youย may beย familiar withย Lynn Rayeย Harris’s work – I recently did a review of Hot Pursuit (which you can find here) and I’m super excited to read the second story, Hot Mess.ย  For those of youย who haven’t read any ofย Lynn’s books, I definitely recommend going out andย picking one up today.ย  Sheย brings to life strong men and the equally strongย women who bring them to their knees.

And I’m also super excited because this morningย I get to play hostย as Lynnย discusses her love of books and gives us a sneak peek at the firstย three stories in her “Hostile Operations Team” series … and they are just as HOT as they sound and look.

*****

Hey, yโ€™all!ย  Merry Christmas!ย  Iโ€™m so happy to be here with you today.ย  Itโ€™s hard to believe Christmas is right around the corner, isnโ€™t it?ย  I think Iโ€™m ready.ย  I have a couple more gifts to buy, and today I hit a 50% off Christmas decorations sale, so I think Iโ€™ll be shoving some more poinsettias on the mantel before the week is through. ๐Ÿ˜‰

My husband always wants to know what I want, and I try my best to think of things besides the usual.ย  But I love the usual.ย  Do you know what the usual is?ย  I bet you do, because if youโ€™re here, you like the same things I like: BOOKS!

I like paper books: hardbacks, trade, mass-market.ย  And e-books.ย  Doesnโ€™t matter, just get me some books!ย  Or gift cards.ย  Those work quite well too, right?ย  I could spend hours in Barnes & Noble.ย  I love browsing the shelves, and I love sitting in the cafรฉ with a latte.

And I love browsing the virtual shelves of Amazon.com, iTunes, and Kobo too.ย  I love bargain books, but I also impulse buy books that look good just from the sample.ย  Do you do that too?ย  I hope itโ€™s not just me.

I hope you get everything you want for Christmas.ย  If youโ€™re like me, youโ€™ll try to steal away from the hustle and bustle and curl up somewhere with a book.ย  And thatโ€™s a perfect day if you ask me. ๐Ÿ™‚ย  Merry Christmas, yโ€™all.ย  Hope yours is fabulous and fun and peaceful.

HotPursuit_270x427Hot Pursuit
Hostile Operations Team,ย Book 1

The last man she ever wanted to seeโ€ฆ

Evie Bakerโ€™s luck just ran out. Thanks to an ex-partner with organized crime ties, sheโ€™s lost her restaurant, her money, and nearly all her self-respect. Forced to return to her hometown and work as a shampoo girl in her motherโ€™s salon, she doesnโ€™t think her luck can get any worse.

But then someone starts shooting at her, her sullen baby sister is suddenly missing, and the high school heartthrob who stole her heartโ€”and her virginityโ€”is the only man big enough and bad enough to help.

Might be the only one who can save herโ€ฆ

Captain Matt โ€œRichie Richโ€ Girard canโ€™t afford to get involved. Heโ€™s already on the verge of a court-martial after a Top Secret op gone wrong, and heโ€™s been ordered to stay out of trouble while heโ€™s home for his sisterโ€™s wedding.

But when Evieโ€™s ex-partner turns up dead, staying out of trouble is the last thing on Mattโ€™s mind. He failed Evie once before; he canโ€™t fail her again. If heโ€™s going to protect her from a killer, and find her sister before time runs out, heโ€™ll have to risk his entire futureโ€”and both their livesโ€”to do it.

Excerpt:

โ€œI think you lost your drink.โ€

Evie knew that voice. It slid over her like hot silk and she spun to find Matt Girard standing behind her, holding the bottle sheโ€™d just ditched. Why did her heart skip the second he showed up? And why did he have to look so delicious?

โ€œI didnโ€™t lose it.โ€

He stood there in faded jeans and a dark T-shirt that molded to his hard pecs and biceps. But it wasnโ€™t his clothing that got her attention so much as his eyes. There was something in them, something she didnโ€™t remember seeing when heโ€™d been seventeen. Heโ€™d been part of this crowd long ago, much more than she had, but he no longer looked like he belongedโ€”in spite of the longing looks some of the women cast in his direction.

His gaze dropped over her before rising again, slowly, and her body reacted as if heโ€™d brushed his fingers over her. There was something hot and sharp and thrilling in that gazeโ€”and she was way more susceptible to it than she wanted to be.

Once, she would have given anything for him to look at her like that. Now, she wasnโ€™t certain sheโ€™d survive the experience.

โ€œGreat dress.โ€ His voice was silky.

Evie swallowed. She was tingling and that wasnโ€™t a good thing. The last time sheโ€™d tingled over this man, it had not turned out so well. โ€œThanks. I think.โ€

He grinned.ย  โ€œItโ€™s definitely a compliment.โ€

Evie crossed her arms and tried to look cool.ย  โ€œThought you werenโ€™t coming tonight.โ€

โ€œNow what made you think a thing like that?โ€

Her blood slogged like molasses in her veins. โ€œI believe you said โ€˜probably notโ€™ in response to Julieโ€™s query.โ€

His teeth flashed. โ€œYeah, but thatโ€™s before I knew youโ€™d be here.โ€

โ€œWhat do you want, Matt?โ€ Her heart thrummed like she was sixteen again.

His gaze dropped once more.ย  โ€œMaybe I might like to see whatโ€™s under that dress.โ€ His voice sounded low and sexy. It pooled in her belly, sent hot waves of need spiraling outward.

โ€œForget it,โ€ she said with a conviction she didnโ€™t quite feel. โ€œAs I recall, the last time didnโ€™t turn out so well for me.โ€

โ€œI know, and Iโ€™m sorry.โ€

โ€œYou said that earlier.โ€

โ€œI did.โ€

She tossed her hair over her shoulder. โ€œSo whyโ€™d you come then? I heard you the first time.โ€

He sighed. โ€œEvie, Jesus.โ€ย  He raked a hand through his hair, and her blood hummed at the ripple and flex of muscle. โ€œI just got back from the desert. Life out there isโ€ฆunpredictable. It makes a man think. And Iโ€™ve decided that I donโ€™t like feeling like a shithead for something that happened ten years ago. I want to clear the slate.โ€

Evie let out a breath. Sheโ€™d been so hurt, and then sheโ€™d been angry.ย  But it was a long time ago and she couldnโ€™t hold a grudge forever. Even now, she recognized that most of her feelings about the incident were still tied up with having her love so cruelly flung back in her face. The other stuff, while definitely unpleasant at the time, hardly mattered anymore.

โ€œWe were kids, Matt.โ€

โ€œI hurt you.โ€

She didnโ€™t flinch from his gaze.ย  โ€œYou did. But Iโ€™m not sixteen anymore. And like I said today, it was my fault too. I asked you to do it. And I told a couple of my friends about it, so it wasnโ€™t just you telling the boys.โ€ She shrugged with a lightness she didnโ€™t quite feel. โ€œWhat happened was probably inevitable. The guys thought I was easy. The girls who were jealous said I was a slut. They made my senior year difficult in some ways.ย  But what hurt the most was never hearing from you again.โ€

There, sheโ€™d said it. Sheโ€™d told him what really hurt, and sheโ€™d given him a window into her feelings back then. Heโ€™d have had to be an idiot not to know, but it was always possible he hadnโ€™t.

โ€œI should have called you.โ€

The music changed, the beat slowing. Evie took a step backward instinctively, but Matt caught her hand and held it tight. She tugged once, and then stopped. They faced each other across a few feet of space. Around them, couples began to slide together, fitting into each other like pieces of a jigsaw.

Evieโ€™s pulse beat harder.ย  Her skin sizzled where they touched, his big hand engulfing hers, his palm calloused in a way that shocked her. He was a Girard, rich, entitledโ€”and he had a workmanโ€™s hands.

โ€œOne dance.โ€

Her insides melted a little more. โ€œIโ€™m not sure itโ€™s a good idea.โ€

But what she really wanted to do was say yes.

His eyes were bright.ย  โ€œWhy not?ย  Weโ€™re adults now, Evie.ย  No oneโ€™s getting hurt here.โ€

He said it like it was so easy, but was it really?ย  Wasnโ€™t she still vulnerable on some level?ย  She was down on her luck right now, feeling like a loser, and here he was, the same gorgeous, cocky, beautiful creature heโ€™d always been. Except, no, he was more than that, wasnโ€™t he?ย  There was something behind his smile now. Something dark and sad. Pain flared in his grey eyes and then was gone so quickly she wondered if sheโ€™d imagined it.

It shocked her. She suddenly wanted to know what had happened to him. Sheโ€™d heard about him being held captive by terrorists. How could he not be affected by something like that? Of all the things sheโ€™d expected Matt Girard to do with his life, putting himself into danger had not been it. He had everything. Why would he want to risk his life that way?

She remembered when his mother had died.ย  Heโ€™d been twelve.ย  Mama had taken her to the wake out at Reynierโ€™s Retreat.ย  There were so many people crowding the beautiful rooms of the mansion. The house was heavy with sadness and thick with grief and it had scared her.ย  Sheโ€™d escaped to run down the wide lawn.ย  Sheโ€™d known where to find Matt.ย  Heโ€™d been curled inside the hollow of a tree theyโ€™d found a few years before.

Heโ€™d been dressed in a black suit, his dark hair slicked back carefully, his grey eyes wide and wounded as he looked up at her.ย  Her heart had lifted into her throat then.ย  Sheโ€™d only been eleven, but sheโ€™d felt something in that moment that rocked her worldโ€”and would continue to rock her world until she was sixteen and shattered by his casual cruelty.

But not that day.ย  That day, sheโ€™d slid into the hollow and sat down beside him.ย  When sheโ€™d put her arms around him, heโ€™d turned his face into the crook of her neck and wept.

Evie sucked in a breath.ย  How could she walk away from him now, knowing there was something behind those eyes?ย  Something that hurt him?

โ€œOne dance, Evangeline,โ€ he said softly when she hesitated. โ€œMake a soldierโ€™s night. I just got back from the desert a few days ago. Iโ€™d like to dance with a pretty woman and forget about that hellhole for a while.โ€

Evie swallowed. โ€œThatโ€™s not fair.โ€

He grinned.ย  โ€œBecause you canโ€™t say no now?โ€

She nodded.

โ€œGood for me then.โ€

โ€œJust one dance and we go our separate ways, got it?โ€ Because she didnโ€™t want to feel this tangle of emotions again. This tiny blossoming in her heart that said she was going to be in so much trouble if she didnโ€™t shut it down quick.

โ€œIf thatโ€™s what you want.โ€ His voice was rough.

He took her other hand then, ran his palms up her arms to her shoulders. Little sparks of sensation swirled in her belly, lighting her up like the fourth of July. He pulled her into his arms right there on the edge of the floor.

Evie braced her hands against his chest, pressed back when he tried to bring her closer. It was already overwhelming to be so close to him. To feel his heat and hardness next to her body.

To feel everything sheโ€™d once wanted so muchโ€ฆ

hotmessHot Mess
Hostile Operations Team,ย Book 1.5

English professor Dr. Georgeanne Hayes has a problem. Her star pupil, an Army sergeant who works in a Top Secret government program, is missingโ€”and someone tried to push her in front of a train last night.

Sam โ€œKnight Riderโ€ McKnight is used to looking out for Georgie.ย  When they were kids, she was just his best friendโ€™s baby sister. But Georgieโ€™s not a baby anymore and Sam is getting some very maleโ€”and very dirtyโ€”thoughts about the girl he knows he can never have.

When someone threatens Georgieโ€™s life again, Sam will do anything necessary to keep her safe. Even if it means spending the next few days locked up in a remote house on Marylandโ€™s Eastern Shore with her.

Sam might be used to denying himself what he wants, but heโ€™s about to find out that being cooped up with Georgie will push him to the limit. And maybe beyond.

A Hostile Operations Team novella, complete at 33,000 words.ย  Spicy!

Excerpt:

The car ride was silent.ย  Or would have been if not for the incessant meowing of Georgieโ€™s cat.

โ€œYou know something, Sam?โ€ Georgie said, and he started at the sound of her voice breaking into his thoughts when the cat had almost become white noise to him.

He shot her a glance.ย  โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œMaybe I donโ€™t want you to be good. Maybe I want you to be as bad as you can be.โ€

Sam gripped the wheel of his truck and stared straight ahead.ย  Jesus.ย  โ€œDonโ€™t say shit like that to me, Georgie.ย  You know Iโ€™m not going there.โ€

She snorted.ย  โ€œBoy, do I.โ€

โ€œGeorgieโ€”โ€

โ€œNo, donโ€™t you Georgie me.ย  When you stopped that nightโ€ฆโ€ย  He could feel her looking at him, her eyes boring an angry hole into him.ย  He told himself she was reacting to everything that had happened to her today and taking it out on him.ย  This wasnโ€™t really about something that had happened twelve years ago.ย  It was just a convenient catalyst.

โ€œWhen you stopped that night, I thought there was something wrong with me.ย  I thought I wasnโ€™t sexy enough or special enough for you.ย  And that hurt.โ€

โ€œOf course you were,โ€ he bit out.ย  โ€œBut youโ€™re Rickโ€™s little sister and I was the wrong guy for a lot of reasons.ย  I stopped because you were special.โ€

โ€œYou were the one I wanted.โ€

He swallowed hard. โ€œI couldnโ€™t do it, Georgie. I couldnโ€™t do it and look Rick in the eye ever again. Or your parents.โ€

She didnโ€™t say anything for a long moment. โ€œYou know who was my first?โ€

โ€œGoddamn it, I donโ€™t want to know.โ€ย  His voice snapped in the interior of the car. Even the cat went silent. Sam closed his eyes.ย  He did not lose his temper. Not ever. But she made him forget all the vows heโ€™d ever sworn to himself.

Georgie folded her arms over her chest. โ€œFine. But you know what you need to remember right now? Here it is, so put it front and center in that brain of yours and keep it there. Iโ€™m not your sister, and Iโ€™m not a kid anymore.โ€

Sam sat there in stony silence, uncertain what in the hell he could possibly say. No, she wasnโ€™t his sister. But it was safer for him if he thought of her that way. He wanted to keep her in a safe place in his head, but in the space of a conversation sheโ€™d gone and thrown her grappling hook over the walls heโ€™d erected and torn them right down.

She thought he had trouble remembering she wasnโ€™t his little sister.ย  No, what he had trouble remembering was that he was no good for her.ย  Because damn if he didnโ€™t want her.ย  He wanted her every possible way he could have her.

When public relations expert Olivia Reese stumbles onto evidence of a conspiracy right before Christmas, thereโ€™s only one man she can call for help. Billy โ€œThe Kidโ€ Blake is a Hostile Operations Team soldierโ€”and Oliviaโ€™s former lover.

Billy never forgot the woman who walked out on him, and heโ€™ll do anything he can to keep her safe. But as time runs out and the snow piles up, can Billy and Olivia work together without getting involved again?

hotpackageExcerpt:

Olivia halted in the door to the kitchen. Billy was sitting at the table with three computers open and that distant look in his eyes that he got whenever he was engrossed in some cyber puzzle. She cleared her throat and he looked up in surprise. And then his eyes narrowed as they dropped over her form.

She was wearing one of his T-shirts, his socks, and no bra. Or panties. Geez. Sheโ€™d taken them off and washed them in the sink before hanging them near the heating vent to dry. Olivia crossed her arms over her chest and walked over to the fridge. The T-shirt covered her ass, but if she bent over or reached for something, it definitely wouldnโ€™t. Why hadnโ€™t she rummaged around for a pair of his sweat pants at least?

Because she hadnโ€™t expected him to be here. Then why did you get his attention instead of turning around and going back to his room?

โ€œSorry to interrupt,โ€ she said brightly. โ€œI couldnโ€™t sleep and thought Iโ€™d get a snack.โ€

He leaned back in the chair and stretched. His pectoral muscles bunched and flexed beneath his T-shirt and her mouth nearly went dry.

โ€œYouโ€™re not interrupting. I couldnโ€™t sleep either. Thought Iโ€™d go through some things.โ€

She opened the fridge and found a package of mozzarella sticks. She grabbed two and turned around to lean against the counter and peel the plastic off the first one.

โ€œAnything to do with Titan Technology?โ€

He looked at the computer again. โ€œYeah. Canโ€™t find a damn thing that indicates Alan Cooper left the CONUS for a trip to St. Thomas. Or anywhere else for that matter.โ€

Her heart thumped. โ€œMaybe heโ€™s hiding out somewhere.โ€ She hoped so anyway. She didnโ€™t know Alan well, but she liked him. Heโ€™d always been nice enough. Quiet, studious, a bit nerdy. A typical engineer.

โ€œCould be. Heโ€™s not using his credit cards, if so.โ€ Billy tapped something on the keyboard. โ€œHis last known location was a gas station in Alexandria two days ago. He filled up and bought a bag of chips and a bottle of water.โ€

Olivia shook her head slowly. โ€œI donโ€™t know how you do it, but Iโ€™m sure glad youโ€™re on the good guysโ€™ side. Think of all the mayhem you could do if you were willing to be bad.โ€

He looked up, his eyes sparking with something that set up a thrumming deep inside her belly.

โ€œIโ€™m willing to be bad,โ€ he said, his voice low and dark with promise. โ€œAs bad as you want me to be.โ€

3. Iโ€™ll try any kind of food once, unless itโ€™s really weird (like scorpion-on-a-stick). I have eclectic tastes and I believe life is an adventure! Why not try the food, right?

4. I got married in Germany and I have two anniversaries. The first is the civil ceremony, performed by the Burger Meister, and the second is the church wedding, which was the next day.

5. I used to live in Hawaii. This was every bit as cool as it sounds.

6. Though I lived in Hawaii, I am not a water sport kind of person. I do not surf. I do not snorkel. I do not like sticking my toes in an ocean in which sharks also swim. I did it on occasion, but itโ€™s not my favorite thing to do. Iโ€™d rather look at the water from the beach.

7. Flying used to terrify me, and now I like it. Except for the long lines and security and all that stuff, of course.

8. Iโ€™m an introvert, which is pretty typical for a writer. I love going to events and meeting readers, but Iโ€™m kinda scared too. What if you donโ€™t like me?

9. I donโ€™t eat dessert very often. Iโ€™m just not a sweets kind of person. Iโ€™d rather have the savory than the sweet. Chocolate is good, and I like it, but I donโ€™t have to have it.

10. I will read just about everything. Except horror. It scares me.

Blog Tour – Last Chance Proposal

This morning we welcome Barbara DeLeo’s heroine, Ellie Jacobs, from Last Chance Proposal as she facesย a … tense situation.

*****

Immigration Service: State your full name, age, occupation and residence, please.

Ellie: My name Ellison Jacobs, Iโ€™m a 26 year old architect from New Zealand. ย Iโ€™m staying in the beach town of Rata Cove, New Zealand over Christmas and then I have projects all over the world.

Immigration Service: So, Miss Jacobs weโ€™re conducting this interview today because there has been some question about the legitimacy of the relationship between you and surf store owner and U.S. resident, Cy Hathaway.

Ellie (clearing her throat): I donโ€™t understand what you mean. Cy and I have been friends for years. Anyone will tell you that our relationship is real.

Immigration Service: Friendshipโ€™s one thing, Ms Jacobs, we want to ensure that youโ€™re not just marrying him to gain entry into the United States and so he will have a better custody case for his son, Jonty,

Is it true that Mr Hathaway left you a number of years ago and you hadnโ€™t seen him again since last week.

Ellie : Yes, but…

Immigration Service: And is it true what some of the townsfolk have told usโ€”that he broke your heart back then and that you were surprised when he turned up at Rata Cove for Christmas?

Ellie: We were teenagers back then, and my heart was broken by something even bigger than my relationship with Cy.

Sometimes you never forget people. Sometimes they become a part of you so deeply that you canโ€™t turn your back on them when they need you most.

Immigration Service: Yes, Ms Jacobs, thatโ€™s exactly what weโ€™re afraid of.

For Ellie, Cy’s sudden reappearance awakens a flood of memoriesโ€”and resentments for the way heโ€™d abandoned her all those years ago. But she has a life now, a career. She can’t simply drop everything and get hitched, even if the sight of him still makes her heart race.

But after Ellie meets his little boy, she can’t refuse. Certain she has a grip on her old feelings for Cy, she agrees to marry her first love until he gains custody. But when did helping out a friend become something with the capacity to hijack her heart?

Barbara DeLeoโ€™s first book, co-written with her best friend, was a story about beauty queens in space. She was eleven, and the sole, handwritten copy was lost years ago, much to everyoneโ€™s relief. Itโ€™s some small miracle that she kept the faith and is now living her dream of writing sparkling contemporary romance with unforgettable characters.

After completing degrees in Psychology and English then travelling the world, Barbara married her winemaker hero and had two sets of twins.

She still loves telling stories about finding love in all the wrong places, with not a beauty queen or spaceship in sight.

EXCERPT:

Where was Seth?

Once in the center of the dance floor she turned in a circle, looking every direction.

There.

From the center seat at the bar, Sethโ€™s direct stare held her captive. A new song excited the crowd and cheers surrounded them, but neither of them paid it any attention.

His jacket and tie were gone, giving her a closer look at his all-male body. The top button on his white shirt was undone. She wanted to undo the rest and get a glimpse at what lay underneath. Round shoulders tapered to his waist. She bit her lip as she imagined his length.

He made no move to come to her, his elbow still rested on the bar. He was a man waiting for the world to come to him.

Not the world. Her.

The comfortable confidence and the heat shining in his eyes turned her on. She swayed her hips to the hypnotic beat. Her hands felt their way up her thighs, around her hips, and an inch past her waist, he got up and walked towards her.

In no time, his feet stepped in between hers and together they rocked to the music. The drums and base from the band pushed a rhythm into her body, driving her desire. Their fingers interlaced. She snuggled closer and breathed in his clean musky scent.

She wanted to touch him, but he kept a hold on her hands. He pushed them both behind her, causing her back to arch and her breasts to press deliciously into his hard body. Heat rolled through her. She let her head fall back, exposing her neck.

His lips brushed across her collarbone. They continued to rock back and forth, their hips swaying and rubbing together. He took her wrists in one hand and his other stroked down her neck, over her shoulder, caressed the side of her breast, and around her waist to land on her butt. He squeezed her ass and pressed her into the hard ridge of his cock. She lowered her chin and moaned as she took in his expression filled with raw desire. A slow devilish smile lit his features and sent a tremble through her.

The song ended and another began while they continued their dance. He let go of her hands and she wrapped them around his neck. Both of his hands molded her ass. She nuzzled his neck, taking a nibble and a few kisses as she breathed him in. She wanted more.

Lots more.

She made her way closer to his mouth. Before she stole a kiss, she looked into his eyes. His brown eyes had darkened to the color of night, matching his hair. She sucked on her lower lip.

โ€œYou know what youโ€™re doing, right?โ€ he asked.

โ€œI know I want you.โ€

โ€œThe Masters work the back rooms on club nights. But we can stay on the dance floor all night, if you want.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re talking about the one on one rooms?โ€ She sucked in a breath.

โ€œI donโ€™t think this crowd is prepared to see what I want to do to you.โ€

โ€œCan we go back there? I want to go back there.โ€ She looked directly into his eyes.

Book Review – Compromising Willa

Tags

9781622664146_p0_v3_s260x420

Lady Wilhelmina Stanhope is ruined and everyone knows it. ย Back in Town for the first season since her downfall, Willa plans to remain firmly on the shelf, assuming only fortune hunters will want her now. ย Instead she focuses on her unique tea blends, secretly supporting a coffee house which employs poor women and children. ย If her clandestine involvement in trade is discovered, she’ll be ruined. Again.

No one is more shocked by Willa’s lack of quality suitors than the newly minted Duke of Hartwell. ย Having just returned from India, the dark duke is instantly attracted to the mysterious wallflower. ย His pursuit is hampered by the ruthless Earl of Bellingham, who once jilted Willa and is now determined to reclaim her.

Caught between the clash of two powerful men, a furious Willa refuses to concede her independence to save her reputation. But will she compromise her heart?

When I first started writing this review, I thought I’d never read any of Diana Quincyโ€™s โ€œAccidental Peersโ€ books before but then realized I’d read Book 2,ย Tempting Bella. ย And really liked it. ย But if you haven’t read any of them, donโ€™t worry about it โ€“ย Compromising Willaย can definitely stand on its own. ย But I definitely recommend reading other books by Quincy if these two are anything to go by.

The interactions between Willa and Hartwell are fantastically fun. ย They are sassy and funny and they both give as good as they get. ย Hartwell is fabulous โ€“ heโ€™s charming, handsome and caring. ย He is immediately drawn to Willaโ€™s cheek and blatantly sets out to win her hand. ย Willa is also wonderful โ€“ sheโ€™s given up on ever marrying, but sheโ€™s strong, smart and resourceful in her own right.

Some may be thrown off by Bellingham โ€“ heโ€™s quite the villain. ย Convinced that heโ€™s loved Willa for ages, heโ€™s intentionally set out to ruin her reputation to keep away other men until heโ€™s in a position to marry her. ย Heโ€™s got a horribly black heart and does despicable things to people. ย Quincy may have been a little zealous in making him the bad guy, but she does it with such style that you actually enjoy hating him.

The plot is well-developed and the pacing is very smooth. ย As we move through each of the stages of Hartwell and Willaโ€™s relationship, I kept finding more and more to be captivated by โ€“ from the initial stages where she tries to rebuff his advances to their engagement and Bellinghamโ€™s machinations, Quincy finds new and interesting roadblocks to their happy ever after.

Compromising Willaย is a wonderful treat for those who like historical romances โ€“ the dashing, gorgeous hero has to win the heart of his clever, sexy heroine and defeat the plans of the dastardly villain. ย Itโ€™s deliciously fun, with a clever narrative and engaging characters, and Iโ€™m definitely looking forward to more.

Blog Tour – Toying with Temptation

This morning we welcome Madison Martin as she looks at the idea ofย “opposites attract”.ย  Then keep reading to get a sneak peek at her new book, Toying with Temptation.

*****

Do Opposites Really Attract?

Thank you so much for letting me be a part of your blog today! Iโ€™m thrilled to be here. I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving with friends and family, whether it was smooth sailing or conflict for all involved. Iโ€™m not much for conflict in real life, and I always like a drama-free holiday, with everyone happy and enjoying themselves. My ideal family holiday would make for a couple of very boring scenes in a book! Hmmm โ€ฆ definitely food for thought.

Having two characters who are polar opposites make for fantastic fiction. Thereโ€™s nothing more satisfying than two people learning and growing from one another, and appreciating the other personโ€™s differences. The other person can bring a fresh viewpoint and way of seeing the world. This can challenge the other character, enrich them, and broaden their world. Itโ€™s often the opposite qualities the character falls in love with. Iโ€™ve found that stories flow off the keyboard or the pen much faster if thereโ€™s good conflict, and stories with lots of conflict are a blast to read. But itโ€™s tricky to get it right.

In Toying with Temptation, Quinn runs the family business, but heโ€™s laid back and confident. Heโ€™s always had the support of his family, and family is the most important thing in his life. Hailey is a workaholic who grew up with little support from family, and she isnโ€™t quite sure sheโ€™s cut out for family life, or that itโ€™s cut out for her. They have to compromise, and by the end these compromises have softened their flaws. Theyโ€™re better people. They havenโ€™t lost their strengths or the essence of themselves, but Quinn learns itโ€™s okay to pursue his own dreams, and Hailey learns that being part of a couple doesnโ€™t diminish her power, but makes her stronger.

Iโ€™m not so sure conflict in real life makes for a great relationship work in real life. I think people who share the same world views, values and interests and who basically think the same way are more likely to get along. But I could definitely be way off base!

What do you think? Do opposites really attract in real life? Or is it better to have more in common with your mate?

author TwTAuthors Bio:

I’ve been writing for as long as I can remember…I still have my first “book” – scribbled in pencil in a 1-subject notebook in sixth grade. When my mom taught me how to type (on an electric typewriter!) there was no going back. I’m crazy about stories in every form – movies, novels, poems, songs, etc. and love making up my own.

I live in the Washington, D.C. area and when I’m not writing I like exploring the sites, going for long walks, and listening to every bit of music I can get my ears on. But most of all I love writing stories…my goal is to make a reader’s day a little lighter and brighter!

Excerpt:

She couldnโ€™t wait any longer. She unzipped his pants and pulled them down with such force that she almost knocked both of them to the floor. He pulled her down along with him until they landed together in a heap on the carpet.
He gave out a deep laugh.
Years and years of seamless business deals, and somehow she was managing to screw this up. Always with the personal stuff, she was there to make a mess of it. โ€œYouโ€™re laughing at my ravaging you?โ€ she asked sheepishly, feeling her cheeks burning. โ€œI know, I knowโ€ฆbeing with me is kind of like being in a French farce, right?โ€
โ€œIโ€™m not complaining.โ€ Still seeming to be enjoying himself, he drew her up beside him on the carpet and kissed her. โ€œYou gotta admit that was kind of funny. Itโ€™s okay to laugh at yourself sometimes.โ€
Instead of taking offense, she lightened up. โ€œHelp me, then.โ€
Together they managed to get his pants all the way off.
Pushing him flat onto his back, she settled herself on top and pressed her hands against the delineated muscles of his chest. He was all hers. She raised up onto her knees, and a little jab of pain made her wince.
With a harsh breath, he leaned up, a worried look on his face. โ€œYour kneeโ€ฆโ€
โ€œNo, itโ€™s all right.โ€ She adjusted her astride position, settling comfortably. โ€œThere. Thatโ€™s better.โ€
โ€œNo, this wonโ€™t work. Weโ€™ll hurt it.โ€
โ€œItโ€™s fine,โ€ she insisted.
Unconvinced, he leaned up and grasped her thigh with one hand. โ€œThat scab still looks bad.โ€
โ€œItโ€™s all right. I promise.โ€
He leaned back, giving in. With a gruff sigh, he said through gritted teeth, โ€œI should have known youโ€™d want to be on top.โ€
She grinned, shifting her silky underwear along the hard length covered by his boxers. โ€œYou used to like it.โ€
He gritted his teeth and grasped her hips. โ€œSure. Use and abuse me,โ€ he croaked out.
She examined the look on his face and bit her lower lip. Was she really torturing him? โ€œYou donโ€™t sound too happy about it.โ€
โ€œIโ€™m not going to be able to handle much of your teasing tonight.โ€
All right, so she admitted she liked teasing him. He was too fun to tease, only because he took it so well. โ€œAre you mad aboutโ€”?โ€
In a split second, he had her flat on her back. She laughed as Quinn moved on top of her, pressing his body against hers.
โ€œHow about we do it like this?โ€ he asked with a triumphant smile, his dark eyes exploring her face.

Book Review – Talking Dirty with the Boss

cover40145-medium

Marisa Clair wants to get her artist dreams back on track after a life detour. That means no partying, no shoppingโ€ฆand definitely no men to distract her. Should be easy, but thereโ€™s something about her hot and exceedingly uptight boss and she can’t seem to stop herself from ruffling Mr. Tall, Dark and Irritating.

Financial consultant Luke McNamara lives his life strictly by schedule โ€“ his OCD simply won’t allow him to do anything else. And the very last thing he needs is a sassy blonde putting lipstick on his collar and messing with his routine. She annoys the hell out of him so why canโ€™t he stop thinking about the color of her pantiesโ€ฆand how free he feels when heโ€™s with her?

Marisa and Lukeโ€™s plans to steer clear of one another are shot to hell after a hot office encounter. Now the two of them will have to learn to get along as they face a much more permanent reminder of their lack of self-control โ€“ a pregnancy.

I absolutely loved this book, read it in less than a day and didnโ€™t want to put it down.ย  The funny thing is that I REALLY didnโ€™t like Marisa at first.ย  There is just something about her that drove me nuts, but as I got to know her I started to feel for her.ย  She comes across as quite self-confident, even cocky, but it is all an act to keep people from looking at her too closely.ย  Ashenden does such a fantastic job of making her so sympathetic that by the time the book was over I felt all of her highs and lows as if they were my own.

From the very beginning, Luke appealed to me โ€“ not because I personally have any of his quirks (just the opposite actually) but because he is so heartbreaking in his troubles.ย  He has such tight control over his life that you know he canโ€™t be happy but he doesnโ€™t see any other way to live his life.ย  And then comes Marisa โ€ฆ and she definitely shakes things up.ย  He’s actually the reason I initially decided to pick this one up.ย  I was SO captivated by the idea of a gorgeous, sexy man having to live with OCD.ย  I just read about a similar man in Wendy Sparrowโ€™s novella,ย On His Listย and found the idea intriguing.ย  Luke is smart, sexy and caring but he carries a heavy burden and is often mistaken for being cold or weird.ย  He definitely makes you remember that all of those odd people in the world may have things going on that you canโ€™t see or understand.ย  The outer disabilities are much easier to recognize than the ones that are on the inside.

This is Ashendenโ€™s follow-up toย Talking Dirty with the CEOย andย Talking Dirty with the Playerย and though Iโ€™ve not read either one, Iโ€™m very much intrigued.ย  The heroes and heroines from both books make very small appearances in this one and their storylines donโ€™t seem to have had any direct impact on this book, so if you havenโ€™t read them either youโ€™ll be fine.

Youโ€™ll findย Talking Dirty with the Bossย to be an interesting new take on the unplanned pregnancy romance โ€“ with a flawed hero and heroine who just need someone to see who they are underneath and love them anyway.ย  Sharp and witty writing, combined with interesting and troubled characters, make this a canโ€™t-miss read for romance lovers everywhere.
