Book Review – Cursed by Cupid

Tags

This one just released this week and it’s the perfect little pick me up to get you in the mood or Valentine’s Day.ย  Enjoy!

*****

dbb19-cover_cursedbycupid-wendysparrowDear Reader, this letter is to inform you of Cupidโ€™s curse, which will fall upon you if you donโ€™t pass this email on to three friends within three hours.

Tilly Morrow didnโ€™t believe in the curse and now she hasnโ€™t had a second date in three yearsโ€ฆbecause all her first dates end in disaster. In fact, she just accidentally punched a guy in the face, leaving her without a date for Valentineโ€™s Day!

Bryant Murphy isnโ€™t sure if the curse is real or not, but if dating Tilly means occasionally getting assaulted with a chocolate shake or nearly electrocuted, itโ€™s worth the risk. Armed with more lucky charms than a bowl of cereal, Bryant will have to battle flying swords, Russian mail-order brides, and shrimp linguini if heโ€™s going to win the girl.

Cursed by Cupid had me laughing so hard I cried. If it can go wrong for Tilly it does and itโ€™s hilarious every time it happens. Itโ€™s tiny, just about 50 pages, but it sparkles every one of those pages. You have to be in the mood for humor but youโ€™ll get a warm and fuzzy to go along with it.

I loved Tilly. For having such horrible things happen to her, she still has a good outlook on the rest of her life โ€ฆ sheโ€™s just given up on romance. And Bryant is my new pretend boyfriend. Heโ€™s caring and funny and is willing to take on Tillyโ€™s curse. I love that he has a sense of humor about it all without making Tilly feel like a fool for believing in the curse. Not that he believes in it, but he believes she believes in it and acts accordingly. It is super, super sweet.

A perfect choice for those looking for a quick read and a good laugh, Cursed by Cupid is going on my list of books to recommend to anyone and everyone.

by Pamela Aares

Blurb:

When loveโ€™s in the game you canโ€™t play it safe…

In LOVE BATS LAST, author Pamela Aares introduces you to the Heart of the Game series. Get ready for All-Star alpha males and the strong women they come to love!

A stormy night changes their lives forever…

The baseball diamond isnโ€™t the only field for all-star player Alex Tavonesi; he also runs his familyโ€™s prestigious vineyard. What he can’t seem to run is his love life. Heโ€™s closing in on the perfect vintage and the perfect game, but so far the perfect woman has eluded him.

Veterinarian Jackie Brandon is eluding her aristocratic past and memories of a soccer star who jilted her just before their wedding. She devotes herself to a marine mammal rescue center on the northern California coast, where hundreds of seals and sea lions are washing up dead.

A chance meeting in a midnight storm brings Alex and Jackie together to rescue a stranded whale. Watching her work, he realizes she’s the passionate, courageous woman he thought he’d never find–he just has to overcome her deep distrust of jocks. Jackie’s passion and courage lead her to discover what’s killing the sea mammals. The culprits want to silence her, and Alex is the only one standing in their way. What will he sacrifice to save the woman he loves?

โ€œPamela Aares deftly weaves together the desires and strategies of world-class sports with the equally charged realm of the heart to create fast-moving tales youโ€™ll wish would never end.โ€ย  โ€”Mary Beath, award-winning author of Refuge of Whirling Light on the contemporary series the Heart of the Game.

โ€œA new star in the romance world!โ€ โ€”E. Alexander, New York Times best-selling author

Excerpt:

โ€œWeโ€™ve got a stranded whaleโ€”the fisherman who reported it said itโ€™s about nine feet. Has to be either a newborn or a juvenile minke. The rescue crew has to deal with the animals they brought in,โ€ she said, nodding toward the hospital. She took a breath and tilted her head toward Gage. โ€œGenius here says you offered to help.โ€

She flicked her eyes over Alex. He felt he was being sized up for auction. Heโ€™d been sized up many timesโ€”by scouts, by owners, by managers deciding how much they would pay for his servicesโ€”but heโ€™d never felt the awkwardness that ran through him as she looked him up and down.

โ€œHe doesnโ€™t have any training,โ€ Gage muttered, as if he was trying to let Alex off the hook.

โ€œHe has muscles,โ€ she said. โ€œRight now, that will do.โ€

โ€œBe happy to help,โ€ Alex said.

He thought he saw the hint of a smile flicker behind her scrutiny. She had a strong, beautiful face that wouldโ€™ve been lovelier without the frown. She turned away and fished in her pocket, pulling out a fistful of keys. She gave him a last, long scan and shrugged.

โ€œGet in the back.โ€ She nodded toward the truck. โ€œAnd try not to fall out. Iโ€™m fresh out of Band-Aids tonight.โ€

Gage shot him a look that said, You donโ€™t have to do this.

It would take a team of bulls to hold him back.

Gage motioned for Alex to jump over the tailgate.

โ€œShe smashed it in last week; it wonโ€™t open,โ€ he said apologetically.

โ€œIf you hadnโ€™t distracted me with all your budget woes and lists of things you desperately needed, I wouldโ€™ve seen the bloody hydrant.โ€ She turned to Alex. โ€œIโ€™m a fine driver.โ€

If her driving matched her boating skills, he was in for it.

Kristen Ashley grew up in Brownsburg, Indiana, and has lived in Denver, Colorado, and the West Country of England. Thus she has been blessed to have friends and family around the globe. Her posse is loopy (to say the least) but loopy is good when you want to write.

Kristen was raised in a house with a large and multigenerational family. They lived on a very small farm in a small town in the heartland, and Kristen grew up listening to the strains of Glenn Miller, The Everly Brothers, REO Speedwagon, and Whitesnake.ย  Needless to say, growing up in a house full of music and love was a good way to grow up.ย ย And as she keeps growing up, it keeps getting better.

Excerpt:

I looked out my office window, down to the yard, my eyes to the bustling activity, and I did this tapping my phone on my desk.

I should be working but I wasnโ€™t thinking about work.

I was thinking about Jacob.

More precisely, I was thinking about calling Jacob, had an overwhelming urge to do so.

I was also trying not to do so because I had a boyfriend, even though he was a boyfriend I wasnโ€™t all that sure about. He was sweet, he was into me, but he was justโ€ฆ off.

Then again, I didnโ€™t have a lot of experience so what did I know?

Additionally, after my dinner with Jacob last night, within an hour, Iโ€™d called him after ten at night and now it was only eleven thirty the next day.

I didnโ€™t want him to think I was psycho, and calling him would imply psycho behavior. Further, when I called him last night, Iโ€™d asked him to dinner, which was dinner two nights in a row with a woman he hadnโ€™t seen in nine years, a woman with a boyfriend, and that was semi-psycho.

Okay, maybe it was totally psycho.

I didnโ€™t want Jacob to think I was psycho.

Ever.

But I wanted to hear his voice. I wanted to connect with him on the phone. Iโ€™d missed him and I liked having him back. I liked it a great deal.

I also missed him a great deal.

And I needed to ask him something. Further, he was the only one I could ask.

I looked from the yard to my phone. My mind telling my thumb not to do it, my thumb not listening, I found Jacobโ€™s contact and hit go.

I put it to my ear.

โ€œIโ€™m a psycho,โ€ I whispered and luckily finished whispering two seconds before Jacobโ€™s voice sounded.

โ€œYou okay?โ€ he answered.

He kept asking that mostly, I figured, because I kept calling when I didnโ€™t need to so he probably thought something was wrong.

Or that I was a psycho.

โ€œI need to know if you donโ€™t eat anything,โ€ I lied.

Actually, it wasnโ€™t a lie. Although I remembered a lot about Jacob (most everything, in all honesty), I couldnโ€™t recall if there was something specific he didnโ€™t like to eat.

I could recall how beautiful he was, how tall he was, how strong he was. I could recall how smart he was and how funny he was. I could recall how cool he was with me. I could also recall how much I missed him. But I couldnโ€™t recall if he didnโ€™t like chicken.

But that wasnโ€™t the only thing I needed to know. I needed to know something else too.

Much like last night, when he didnโ€™t make me feel like a psycho, in fact, the opposite and sounded like he was happy to hear from me and would be willing to talk all night, he again sounded like me psychotically calling him yet again in a precursor to stalker way was no big deal.

โ€œI donโ€™t eat it, Iโ€™ll pick it off.โ€

โ€œYou canโ€™t pick it off if I cook with it in it or if the mainstay of dinner on the whole is what you donโ€™t eat,โ€ I informed him.

โ€œYou makinโ€™ Indian food?โ€ he asked.

โ€œNo. Donโ€™t you like Indian food?โ€ I asked back.

โ€œLove it,โ€ he answered.

โ€œThen whyโ€™d you ask if I was making Indian food?โ€

โ€œ โ€™Cause I hoped you were.โ€

I burst out laughing.

No, Jacob definitely didnโ€™t make me feel like I was being a psycho.

When I quit laughing, I told him, โ€œSorry, honey, I donโ€™t know how to make Indian food.โ€

โ€œShame,โ€ he muttered, a smile in his deep, attractive voice, and if I was on an infrared scanner, specific parts of me would have shown up hotter.

You have a boyfriend, Emme! I told myself.

For a while, I answered myself.

Jacob is also your exโ€“best friendโ€™s ex-boyfriend, Emme! I reminded myself.

So? I asked myself.

I shoved those thought aside, thoughts that, if anyone knew I was talking to myself in my head might prove I was indeed a psycho, and pointed out to Jacob, โ€œYou havenโ€™t actually answered the question.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll eat what you cook, Emme. Cook what you like.โ€

He was such a nice guy.

He always was.

Nice. Tall (very tall). Handsome (unbelievably handsome). Smart (so damned smart). Funny. Interesting. Gentlemanly. And a repeat of nice because it was worth a repeat since he was just that nice.

I liked all that about him. I liked that he wore his dark hair way too long. I liked that sometimes a thick hank of it fell over his forehead and into his eye. I liked that he was who he was and didnโ€™t wear designer jeans or put gel in his hair. I liked that, even considering he was extortionately intelligent, in fact, a genius, he never made anyone feel less than him because they werenโ€™t as smart. I liked that he never acted superior or arrogant and with all that was him, looks, body, brains, he was one person who could. And I liked that he liked to do what he liked to do, he did what he liked to do and wouldnโ€™t get pushed into doing something he didnโ€™t want.

Like Elsbeth tried to do.

Heโ€™d lost her to that and heโ€™d accepted it. I knew it killed. Heโ€™d loved her to distraction. But he refused to be the man she wanted him to be and instead was the man he was.

She should have seen she had it all even if he didnโ€™t make bucketloads of money and thus couldnโ€™t give her the life she was used to getting from her daddy. Country clubs, tennis lessons, vacations in villas in Italy and beaches in Thailand, fabulous homes kept by maids and fabulous meals cooked by cooks.

She didnโ€™t see all she had.

Stupid.

The Seven Deadly Sins of Haunt Me

Hello and thank you, Julie and Romantic Reads and Such, for letting me drop by and take over the blog today.ย  I thought I would take a different approach to looking Haunt Me, my latest release from Entangledโ€”especially since Iโ€™ll be hosting a table at AAD Charlotteโ€™s Sins and Virtues Ball! ย So, without further ado, here are seven insights into Haunt Meโ€ฆ

  • Pride โ€“ Mac doesnโ€™t want to lean on or depend on anyone. Her pride had already taken enough blows during her divorce. But sometimes pride gets in the way of love, and thatโ€™s a lesson she needs to learn.
  • Greed โ€“ Long ago, a man wanted a woman so badly he locked her away from the world.
  • Wrath โ€“ His fury at being unable to control her heart reaches through the ages to capture them in its claws.
  • Envy โ€“ The town of Penny Hollow and our hero all envied Summerfield, wanting it for their own purposesโ€ฆuntil Justin fell in love.
  • Gluttony โ€“ Theyโ€™d do anything to be together.
  • Sloth โ€“ Not all Kent siblings are made the same, but some are accused of worse habits than others.
  • Lust โ€“ No matter how much he wanted her, Justin held his body in check until she was ready.

From paranormal historical westerns to contemporary military romance, Heather might switch genres, but one thing is true in all of her storiesโ€”her characters drive the books. When sheโ€™s not wrangling her menagerie of animals, she devotes her time to family and friends she considers family. She believes if you like your heroes so real you could lick the grit off their chest, and your heroines so likable, youโ€™re sure youโ€™ve been friends with women just like them, youโ€™ll enjoy her worlds as much as she does.

Weโ€™re kicking off the month-long celebration with three new Brazens, each with a smoking hot military man front and center and each for just 99 cents!

MFH_500Marine for Hire, by Tawna Fenske

She thought sheโ€™d sworn off military men for goodโ€ฆ

Sam Kercher is every inch a wickedly hot Marine. Tall. Sexy. Lethal. When his best friends call in a favor, Sam is forced to face an entirely new line of dutyโ€”playing nanny for their newly divorced sister and her squirming seven-month-old twin boys. If Sam can dissemble an M16 in his sleep, diaper duty should be a cakewalkโ€ฆright?

Unfortunately, Operation Nanny isnโ€™tย quiteย that simple. Sheridan has sworn off overbearing military men, so Sam must protect her from her dirtbag ex without revealing just how much he has in common with her brothers. Or that heโ€™s been ordered not to touch her. Ever. Problem is, Sheriโ€™s one hell of a gorgeous woman, capable of making this hard-bodied Marine even harder. And Sam wants herย bad.

Protect the girl. Care for the babies. Hide his identity. And keep his handsย off. But even the most disciplined Marine has weaknesses…and Sheridan is one Sam might not be able to resist.

SHC_500Staking His Claim, by Tessa Bailey

He wants her.ย Allย of her.

NYPD sniper Matt Donovan is in Hell. Instead of driving his best friendโ€™s little sister home from college, heโ€™s stuck with her roommateโ€”a fresh-faced ray-of-sunshine with a body that makes grown men weep. Thereโ€™s no way heโ€™ll allow himself to taint the little vixen, no matter how hard she tries to tempt him, so he resigns himself to the longestโ€”andย hardestโ€”drive of his life.

Mattโ€™s obvious attraction suits grad student Lucy Mason just fine. She had no idea her brotherโ€™s best friend was so deliciously hot. Knowing heโ€™d never have his wicked way with his buddyโ€™s sister, she lies about her identity and seduces him. But Mattโ€™s no fumbling college boy. His desires run deepโ€”and darkโ€”and he wants to teach Lucy what wickedย reallyย means.

Mattโ€™s demanding appetites only make Lucy wantย more. But when her cover’s blown, heโ€™s furiousโ€”even as his hunger for her becomes insatiable. Matt canโ€™t trust anyone, least of all himself. And he knows all too well that darkness always destroys the lightโ€ฆ

TY_500Temporarily Yours, by Jen McLaughlin, writing as Diane Alberts

This soldierโ€™s the perfect hoaxโ€ฆif she doesnโ€™t fall for him first.

Stats whiz Kayla Moriarity knows her way around numbers and algorithms. Men, on the other hand, are unsolvable equations. Now Kaylaโ€™s en route to her sisterโ€™s weddingโ€”without the fictional boyfriend she invented for her family. Fortunately, her plane comes complete with complimentary cocktailsย andย a ridiculously hot ex-marine in the seat beside her. And thatโ€™s all it takes for Kaylaโ€™s inhibitions to go sailing out the airlock…

Cooper Shillings has soft spot for people in trouble, but he certainly wasnโ€™t expecting to land in it himselfโ€”and definitelyย notย while getting naughty mid-air with a sexy southern belle. When he hears Kaylaโ€™s predicament, however, he offers his services as a stand-in boyfriend. After all, heโ€™s heading overseas soon…and how could he refuse a little no-strings wickedness?

Itโ€™s the perfect plan. And all Kayla has to do is ensure her family falls for the ultimate bluff, without falling for itโ€”and Cooperโ€”in the process…

A Triple Star Ranch Novel

โ€œIโ€™ll take you, turn you, until Iโ€™m the sun that warms you, the moon that calls to you at night.โ€ โ€“ Howl Raven

Blurb:

Where there’s smoke, there’s fireโ€ฆand passion that won’t be denied.

The child of a gypsy and fey, small-town veterinarian Dr. Anastasia Brannon has always hidden her magic for fear of ridicule. A red-hot encounter with the new PI in town makes their attraction impossible to deny. Throwing caution to the wind, she indulges her desires but keeps her secrets close.

A man with a shady past and secrets of his own, Howl Raven uses his feral talents and tracking skills to make a living, doing his best to lay low and hide the curse that haunts him every month. So far, so goodโ€ฆuntil an uncontrollable shift outside the full moon leaves him the victim of a werewolf hunter.

When she finds the enigmatic investigator wounded in the woods near her cabin during a storm, Ana provides medical care on instinct. She may be the only one who can banish the wolf from Howlโ€™s blood,ย but at what cost?

*****

Excerpt:

Stop thinking about sex, Ana. Control yourself.

Howl swallowed the pills with the hot coffee burning a path down his raw throat and hoped it hid his grin.

Arrgh. He probably heard that too.

โ€œEvery word. Weโ€™ll get to that, hopefully sooner rather than later.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re evading the question. So, how did you come to be bleeding in my woods not twenty feet from my doorstep?โ€

โ€œMy woods. Iโ€™m renting the Parker place, remember? Technically, that makes Parkerโ€™s woods, my woods,โ€ he corrected.

She turned her back on him to retrieve something from the cabinet. Had it only been yesterday they had shared lunch in this room? She had been molten in his arms, melting into his kiss. If not for the phone call from Jace, they would have ended up in bed. Maybe on the couch. Against the wall. Now who couldnโ€™t control their thoughts? Where had this distance come from?

โ€œThatโ€™s not what I meant and you know it.โ€

โ€œI know.โ€ He slipped in behind her at the counter. He had questions. She had answers. Howl intended to have them and her. โ€œWhy didnโ€™t you call for help?โ€ Howl laughed when he felt her jump mentally. Mind reading was such a trip. He effectively caged her between the counter and his arms. He wanted to kiss her, just there where her neck curved into her shoulder. He nuzzled the spot and traced the tip of his tongue along the exposed skin of her throat.

She tilted her head to give him better access. โ€œThe storm knocked down lines everywhere. Weโ€™re running off generator power, no phone, and no cell.โ€

He felt her shiver as her situation started to dawn on her. They were completely alone. Nothing to stop them from acting on this all-consuming lust. No calls from Jace. No neighborly driveby visits from Cade. No work. Just walls, rooms, and plenty of doors with locks.

โ€œI would have driven you to the hospital once the storm let up and you were stable, but you asked me not to. That, and my Jeep was totaled by a tree. Then I found this.โ€ Ana held up the small jar containing the bullet she had removed. โ€œAnd I knew I couldnโ€™t go to Cade. He wouldnโ€™t understand.โ€

Howl took the jar. Even through the glass, the metal burned his skin. He tossed it aside. It rolled across the floor into the corner smacking into the baseboard but didnโ€™t break.

โ€œThank you for that, for protecting me. You know what I am, then.โ€ This time he did kiss her just behind her right ear.

โ€œYes.โ€

โ€œAnd are you afraid of me?โ€ Need beat a rhythm through his blood. Please say no. The hard planes of his body pressed against the silk of her back.

โ€œShould I be?โ€

โ€œI wonโ€™t hurt you.โ€

โ€œHow do you do this to me?โ€

Howl felt her frustration as she instinctively arched into him.

โ€œWhat do I do to you?โ€ He flipped open the buttons of her blouse.

โ€œMake me ache for you.โ€

A feral urge consumed him with her whispered words, something animal, something that couldnโ€™t be controlled. He kissed the nape of her neck, and felt her skin vibrate beneath his lips. He heard her shudder inwardly and beg her body to behave. โ€œOh, no you donโ€™t. I want you out of control. You should have told me about your magic.โ€ He breathed the word in her ear. She melted underneath his massaging fingers.

โ€œAnd you could have mentioned you howl at the moon, before I had to use that magic to save your life.โ€

Book Review – Gwynneth Ever After

cover31679-mediumNotting Hill with a role reversal (he’s the Hollywood star) and kids thrown in (she’s a single mom):

Gwyn Jacobs doesnโ€™t believe in fairy tales. Ever since her ex-husband walked out, leaving her alone with three small children, Gwyn has been mother, father, and bread-winner all rolled into one. Her own scarred heart aside, she refuses to open up her childrenโ€™s lives to the possibility of another heartbreak, and so she has an unbending policy of no dating and no unattached men in their lives.

Until her very own fairy tale falls into her lap…and the hero wonโ€™t take no for an answer.

Gwynneth Ever After is one of the best books Iโ€™ve read lately.ย  It is so well written it comes across as lighter than it actually is, but it has a great deal of depth and emotion which keep you turning the pages.

Gareth is just about perfect.ย  Heโ€™s mature, sexy, caring, thoughtful and quite the hunk.ย  I love the way he interacts with Gwynโ€™s kids and how easily he fits into their family.ย  And those kids are down-right adorable.ย  They add that perfect amount of fun that just highlights Gareth and Gwynโ€™s growing feelings. Readers can totally get behind Gwynโ€™s reasons for being afraid to get involved again.ย  She had a rough go of it and with Garethโ€™s job it is easy to see why he might not be the best bet.ย  But heโ€™s quite appealing and it is hard to ignore their attraction.ย

I love the fact that there isnโ€™t a lot to their story โ€“ two unlikely people meet, they start to fall in love, but question how (and even if) it can all work out.ย  Itโ€™s not full of large scale problems or misunderstandings.ย  They each come into it with a load of complications but thatโ€™s realistic, especially for their stage in life.ย  Theyโ€™ve done a fair amount of living and have the baggage that comes with that.ย  And I absolutely love the ending.ย

With Gwynneth Ever After, Poitevin brings to life endearing characters, full of warmth and depth, in a beautifully compelling story so deftly told it made me feel like I was coming home to old friends.

Blog Tour – Letting Go

This morning we welcomeย Bridie Hallย as she shares with us how integral writing is to her and then gives a look at her new book, Letting Go.

Stories & coloring books

I always had heaps of coloring books around the house as a child. I liked colors, the freedom of creating, of defiantly painting a dog pink and a girlโ€™s face green. Another reason why I liked coloring books was that they contained no words, no stories.

Itโ€™s not that I didnโ€™t like stories, quite the contrary, it was the opportunity that coloring books offered me to make up my own tales. I would sit on the balcony overlooking the river in the summer, and I would be turning page after page in a coloring book and weaving the dolls, dogs, parrots, hot air balloons and everything else into one long story. I was trying to see whether I could include each and every object, animal or person in the book into one story and still make sense. I canโ€™t remember whether I succeeded, but I do know this is my first distinct memory of me making up stories, and loving it.

I loved it a tiny bit less when I started school. There was no time for coloring books then, it was all long division and predicates and the year of the French revolution (I mention this year because itโ€™s the only one I remember from History). There was no place or time for my own stories, it seemed all the stories had already been written, and the only thing I was allowed to do was to learn them by heart. It felt like the world didnโ€™t want to listen to what I had to say, to my fairy tales and mysteries and adventure sagas.

In my teens, I returned to stories and started writing them down. I was fourteen, when I had my first story published. The magazine had to pay my mom as I didnโ€™t yet have my own bank account. Mom doesnโ€™t have to โ€˜lendโ€™ me her account anymore, not because I have my own, but because I mostly donโ€™t get paid for my writing endeavors. But I refuse to let that deter me. I have found the perfect manner to express myself, and while Iโ€™m not the most gregarious person youโ€™ll ever meet and I may go long hours, even days, without speaking to anyone, not a day passes without me writing down a few lines, paragraphs or a poem.

For me, writing is not a hobby or a profession. Itโ€™s about how I perceive the world around me and inside me. I donโ€™t know whether I would see things differently if I didnโ€™t write, but Iโ€™m certain they would make far less sense to me. Somehow, deep down, I mustโ€™ve known that already as a child when I felt the need to come up with a raison dโ€™etre for the coloring book characters.

Excerpt:

They had to use their jackets to shield themselves from the rain as they ran to the car. It was pouring again.

โ€œIโ€™ve had enough of this rain,โ€ Isabelle said.

โ€œItโ€™s been like this the entire week. Freaky weather.โ€

โ€œAt least I got some sunny days in Paris,โ€ Isabelle sighed as she got in and closed the door.

โ€œDid you go see the Luxembourg gardens?โ€ Harper asked and started the car. Driving down the street, he typed a quick message to Missy, and Isabelle itched to give him a lecture on safety.

โ€œI loved them,โ€ she said instead. โ€œI went there almost every day and watched the people. It was almost like a gallery, but the pictures were alive.โ€

โ€œDid you see kids playing with the sail boats at the basin?โ€

โ€œYeah. It was such a nice, calm place. I can imagine going there to relax or cool off.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s the perfect spot. But then again, every spot in Paris is damn near perfect.โ€

โ€œIs it my imagination or are you a hopeless romantic?โ€

He looked at her and smiled crookedly. โ€œItโ€™s an inspiring city, thatโ€™s all.โ€

โ€œDid you visit it alone?โ€ Isabelle asked, smiling.

โ€œNo.โ€

โ€œHm. What happened to her?โ€

โ€œBugger off.โ€

โ€œCome on, tell me.โ€ She only half teased him. She wanted to know more about the Harper sheโ€™d glimpsed last night when they talked about his family and earlier in Missyโ€™s kitchen. He astounded her, made her curious.

โ€œShe ditched me over a physics student,โ€ he said as if he were ashamed of it.

โ€œOh.โ€

โ€œYeah.โ€

โ€œHer loss.โ€

Harper turned to her.

โ€œWhat? A physics student as opposed to a web designer that can cook? Thatโ€™s a no brainer.โ€

โ€œIt certainly was a no brainer for her,โ€ he said dryly.

โ€œYou cared about her?โ€

โ€œI took her to Paris, didnโ€™t I?โ€

โ€œTrue.โ€

They fell silent. Isabelle mulled over the things she had learnt about him. Sheโ€™d only dated one boy before Jamie and it wasnโ€™t very serious at all. Still, when he dumped her, her pride was hurt. Chloe went on a mission of returning her self-esteem by taking her on shopping trips where they spent most of their time assessing the boys they saw because neither of them could afford to buy anything. That was how Isabelle first noticed Jamie. He was in front of them in the line at the ice cream place at the mall and she remembered he chose vanilla and chocolate. The ice cream was why she noticed him. She had a habit of choosing the flavors with the wildest colors, so she rarely picked vanilla and chocolate. Jamie, as she learned later, always picked the same flavors.

โ€œDid it hurt?โ€ she now asked Harper.

โ€œI got over it,โ€ he said. But the way he said it answered her question better than the words. She could imagine his heartache and it made her sad. His entire life had been sad, Isabelle thought. She guessed that was one of the reasons for the distance that he created between himself and the people around him by being sarcastic and unkind. He deserved a break. He deserved someone to make him happy. Why was it that some people never got to be happy?

โ€œWhatโ€™s your favorite ice cream flavor?โ€ she asked, thinking of Jamie standing in line at the mall. When Jamie had turned and smiled at her, she thought he was cute. Decent and good.

โ€œI donโ€™t have one. I always pick a different flavor. Why?โ€

โ€œJust curious,โ€ she said, her smile tense. โ€œAnd thanks. For a wonderful morning.โ€

โ€œIt wasnโ€™t as bad as you expected, was it?โ€

โ€œIt wasnโ€™t bad at all.โ€

โ€œSee? I told you that you could trust me.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m beginning to realize that sometimes itโ€™s easier to trust others than myself.โ€

Glancing at her, he said, โ€œWhat got you thinking that?โ€

โ€œLife in general,โ€ she shrugged. โ€œItโ€™s messier, less controllable than Iโ€™d like to think. I often misjudge situations. Thereโ€™s plenty of confusing grey areas.โ€

โ€œThat it is,โ€ he agreed. โ€œDonโ€™t let it get to you. Greyโ€™s a cool color.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t know.โ€ Isabelle looked out of the window into all the rainy greyness. โ€œIf you donโ€™t mind a Miss Pageant moment, Iโ€™d say that if I had the magic wand, Iโ€™d make everyone happy. That would make the world more pleasant and easier to live in.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™d definitely win the pageant, but you could never make everyone happy. Not even with a magic wand.โ€

โ€œWhy not?โ€ she said, frustrated.

He glanced at her, but when she met his eyes, he looked away. โ€œFor example, someone will want a sunny day, but their neighbor might like rain. Or to be less prosaic, say, two people are in love with the same person โ€ฆโ€

Harper let the rest of the sentence hang in the air. Isabelle froze when his words amalgamated into a coherent sentence in her mind. She didnโ€™t dare guess whom he was talking about. She didnโ€™t respond.

โ€œYup,โ€ Harper said off-handedly a moment later.

Book Review – Unstoppable

cover35020-mediumMelanie O’Bryan knows life is too short to be afraid of taking chances. And former Air Force sergeant Bennett Hart is certainly worth taking a chance on. He’s agreed to help her students with a school project, but she’s hoping the handsome handyman will offer her a whole lot more. Yet despite his heated glances and teasing touches, Mel senses there’s something holding him back . . .

Bennett Hart is grateful to be alive and back home in Mirabelle, Florida. Peaceful and uncomplicated-that’s all he’s looking for. Until a spunky, sexy-as-hell teacher turns his life upside down. After one smoldering kiss, Bennett feels like he’s falling without a parachute. But with memories of his past threatening to resurface, he’ll have to decide whether to keep playing it safe, or take the biggest risk of all.

Mel and Bennett have been dancing around a possible relationship, claiming to just be friends but everyone knows their feelings go deeper than that. The romance between the two is slow and sweet, the perfect friends to lovers transition. I think that is one of my favorite plotlines, because the couple has such a strong bond before they decide to get involved deeper. Together they are sassy and touching, and it is a realistic transition into something more.

Once they get that out of the way, though, they still have problems to overcome. Bennett has emotional scars from his time as a soldier and heโ€™s not comfortable opening himself up to Mel and his feelings for her. He has to decide if he can give their relationship everything he has โ€ฆ and like a typical Alpha, heโ€™s going to fumble along for a while before he gets it right.

I loved Shannon Richardโ€™s Undeniable, the story of Grace and Jax, and I impatiently waited for the next story. Well-paced and poignant, Unstoppable brings to life a heart-warming friends-to-lovers story that will have readers smiling and sighing and cheering for everything to work out in the end … and impatiently waiting for more.ย  With the “Country Roads” series, Richard has given readers a fantastic group of friends and I canโ€™t wait to see each of them get their happy ending.

(If youโ€™ve not read either Undone (Book 1) or Undeniable (Book 2), youโ€™ll be fine. You might miss some of the smaller details but Unstoppable can definitely stand alone. Youโ€™ll probably just add some more books to your To Be Read file.)
