Carter’s car is more than just a vehicle to get him from A to B, it’s a luxury machine, intended for speed and drawing attention. As DC’s Sexiest Bachelor, he wouldn’t be expected to drive anything less. Gwen on the other hand, pilots a used Honda Civic, which proves an endless source of irritation to Carter, and provides her with a considerable amount of glee.

Carter would never purchase a suit off the rack at The Men’s Warehouse. He’d sooner wear nothing at all (and look amazing!). When clothes are required, he’s a made-to-measure kind of guy with a tailor on call. Remember when Christian Bale played Bruce Wayne/Batman and went to all the fancy galas dressed to kill? Yeah, he’s a close second to Carter Anderson.

No billionaire worth his salt would live in a house, or even a run-of-the mill mansion. Carter lives in a manor, a grand, stately residence full of fine antiques, tapestries, and hand woven silk rugs.

And like all manors, they have a name, in this case River View. I based the Anderson family residence on the real-life home of Daniel Snyder, the owner of the Washington Redskins football team, which overlooks the Potomac River. Nice digs, huh?

These are just a few of Carter’s pricey bobbles. There are lots more of course, but they become less and less important as his feelings toward Gwen grow. To see how Gwen softens Carter’s heart, I hope you’ll give His Billion Dollar Baby a try!

Thank you for allowing me to share an excerpt of Played by the Billionaire on your blog today. The story is about an Internet security billionaire who takes a leave of absence from his company in order to finish his beloved brother’s mystery-romance novel. To learn about romance regular-guy style, the hero, Liam, hacks into a dating website and selects a love tutor. Except the woman he chooses, Lorelei, teaches him about a lot more than just what people without a private jet and house in Antigua do on dates. This excerpt is from their second date, regular-guy style:

“Do you want a coffee before we head off?” He stared at her mouth this time. Was he thinking about a kiss? Her lips tingled and she ran her tongue over them. His eyes widened in response.

She cleared her throat before she could answer. “No, I’m good. I had one at home.” No way was she going to risk coffee breath if Liam decided to take action on his thoughts.

“My car is around the corner—”

“I thought we’d take public transit. That way we get the real local experience.”

“Public transit?” Liam regarded her like she’d suggested they crawl on their knees around the city.

“Yes, then we don’t have to worry about parking,” she added, hoping that would seal the deal.

“But, my car…”

“Public transit or I don’t go.” She crossed her arms and waited for him to adjust to the change in plan.

“You drive a hard bargain, lady. I’m going to have to brush up on my negotiation skills.”

Lorelei smiled. At least he wasn’t having everything his way. She was determined, this time, to maintain her backbone. With previous boyfriends she’d given in on everything from where they ate to what she wore, just to keep them happy— to keep them from leaving.

“Great. Let’s get you a one-day passport so we don’t have to find correct change all the time.”

Liam grumbled something she couldn’t understand. After a minute he shrugged off his sulk and started to tease her. “You’re not one of those environmentalists, are you, who think cars are evil and everyone should ride bikes and wear hemp and bamboo clothes?”

“No, of course not. I had a car in Buffalo. It’s just everything is so convenient here I haven’t felt the need to get another one. And…” She put her hand on his shoulder and stood on tiptoe to get near his ear. “I have at least twenty pairs of leather boots,” she whispered.

Liam stopped walking and turned to face her. “Twenty pairs of leather boots? You decadent woman! Dare I hope at least one pair is thigh-high that you wear with a leather outfit?” Laughter danced in his eyes and a mischievous grin split his face.

“You may never know,” Lorelei said with a smile to match his.

To Have and Have Not

Looking back over the romantic heroes that I’ve written, there are a few traits that all of them have which are, in no particular order…

Good looks – with killer bodies

Sense of humor – with a dash of witty

Determined -they know what they want

Caring – and not afraid to show it.

So it struck me, that all romance heroes have some or all of these traits, but there is also a list of things that many real life heroes have, but not many romantic heroes in books have and it might be fun to try and tease some of them out…

Romance heroes practically never have:

Beards – many have a couple of days of scruff, but rarely full beards.

Bikes – unless they’re world class, tour de France sort of heroes.

Bad backs – though lots of real life heroes have ‘em!

Unemployment – unless it’s by choice, and then they mysteriously always seem to have money anyway.

Eczema or hay fever – but hey, people have both of these!

But it’s fiction, right? My current hero, Heath Starr, is an ordinary man with a dream. He doesn’t have a beard, or a bad back, he’s funny, determined, caring and gorgeous. I love him, and hope you will too. But I’m thinking one day maybe I’ll write the perfect anti-hero and give him a beard, a bike, a bad back and hay fever – make him lose his job, and make readers love him too!

God must be rewarding him for his patience. That had to be the answer. There was no other reason why he would trip over a scenario this sweet. Ivy was outside wearing nothing but a pair of bikini bottoms and a frown.

Blake killed the engine and slowly pulled his boat up to the dock. He tied it up, taking careful steps to secure his baby and make Ivy wait as long as humanly possible. From what he could see, she wasn’t going anywhere, even if she wanted to.

He climbed onto the dock and strolled causally over to the Hudson cabin with his hands thrust into his pockets. His jeans tightened uncomfortably as his inspection ran over her mostly bare body. He was frankly surprised by the reaction. Continuing yesterday’s theme, I’ve got another book that features a former military hero.

I enjoyed this story for a lot of reasons. I’ll start with the DreamMakers itself – how fun is it that 3 ex-military guys start a dream date company? They really do make their talents work for them and it keeps them having a good time. It is a little kooky but totally works for me.

And the characters are a blast. Mainly we focus on Parker and Lynn but we do get glimpses of the secondary characters outside of the main story (and it is in their voice, which at first threw me a little but started to work after a bit). These lead to future stories and it definitely whetted my appetite for more.

Now, I need to stop here and say this is an erotic romance. The sex is explicit (and enjoyable and HOT) but it also includes scenes with multiple partners so if that isn’t your thing then you might want to pick another story.

With that caveat, I have to say I really enjoyed the relationships – both between Lynn and Parker and also between the friends. They are fun, humorous and touching (sometimes accompanied by a punch in the arm). The guys are great together, typical of what you’d expect from a group of Alphas together. And Lynn’s friend Suz is a hoot and a half.

The relationship that builds between Parker and Lynn is entertaining and it showcases how much they enjoy spending time together, which is a very realistic feature for me. Of course there is going to be a bit of drama between the two when all of their secrets come out (it’s obvious from the beginning) but it is handled well. Although I was surprised by the ending. It wasn’t quite the kind of story twist I was expecting but it worked well with the rest of the plot.

With a sweet and spicy romance, brotherly love and the best friend a girl could ask for, All Fired Up is a hit for me. It kept me turning the pages and I ended it with a smile … and anticipation for the next story in the series.
