Today Julieann Dove is stopping by to answer a few questions and share her new book, Waking Amy.  I’m so happy she took a little time out of her schedule because this book is getting some fantastic reviews and it looks like an absolute delight – I feel so much for Amy from just the blurb and the sneak peek!

*****

What do you like best about writing romances?

I think love has so much stickiness to it, that it’s a million different ways to be written—complicated, sad, happy, and just lots of layers of everything in between! The possibilities are limitless. For me, who is someone that doesn’t plot, I like seeing love resolve from complicated to happily ever after.

What is your favorite romantic movie?

There are so many good ones! When I was younger it used to be Against All Odds, with Rachel Ward and Jeff Bridges. Now, I enjoy watching The Notebook. I love the era, and of course, Ryan Gosling. 🙂

Which of your characters/books was the most fun to write?

My new book “A Reason to Stay” is coming out in June. The heroine, Elise, was really fun to write because she’s a non-committer. To the extreme! I can identify with her. My husband jokingly comments sometimes that he wonders where the sales tag is on him. (I have a problem cutting off tags from things—it means I can’t ever return it!)

If you weren’t a writer and could be anything you want, what would it be?

Anything? I’d be a lounge singer! And wear sparkly gowns with molded hair and too much makeup…gripping a microphone and singing to the piano music. 🙂 Anyone who knows me would fall over from reading that!!

Blurb:

Amy Whitfield is blindsided when she comes home and finds a note on the fridge from her husband, Wesley, stating that after four years of marriage, he’s leaving her. Amy was in the midst of trying to spice things up, to bring life back to their boring marriage. It seems now that she was too late.

As Amy sits with her head between her knees, trying to figure out what to do next, a call comes from Mercer General Hospital. The ER nurse is telling Amy’s answering machine that Wesley has been in a car accident.

When Amy arrives at the hospital, she finds her husband in a coma. The doctors say there is no sign of brain damage, and Wesley will eventually wake up. Relieved, Amy sees this as her second chance: the chance to get it right this time. To channel the girl Wesley won’t leave when he regains consciousness… She just needs some help to pull it off. After all, she was voted girl most likely to die a virgin in high school.

Amy would never figure on getting that help from Mark Reilly…Wesley’s doctor! He’s a non-committer, too-cute-for-his-own-good bachelor, and completely the guy Amy begins falling for. It’s a race against time to see who wakes up first—Amy or her husband.

Excerpt:

I tried on the outfit and instantly felt like the frosting on a moist, delicious birthday cake, along with confetti and sparkly stars. Was I serious? Did I really want to go half naked out of the mall and drive to Mark’s house? Damn straight. Wesley sucked, and I needed to spread my wings and flirt with disaster. Shit on Little Miss Muppet, do-the-right-thing Amy. I needed to even the score with my husband. Have a little sin tucked under my pillow at night. Provided I would end up with him. Where else did he have to go? Who else would wipe his ass and still make him breakfast in the mornings? Coffee with a drop of creamer, two sugars, and two egg whites with a piece of buttered toast, easy on the butter.

“I can leave it on?” I asked the salesgirl, from the fitting room.

“Sure, I’ll cut the tags and ring you up at the register.”

I took a second look at it, pulling at the snug top, trying my best to stretch it looser. My breasts rested in it like a pair of melons in a sling shot. The ribbed material hugged my skin like a painted silhouette. The top edging of the skirt girded my waist like a rubber band, the kind the postal service used for securing bulky letters. Thankfully the strip of lace hung a generous inch past the bottom, securing the identity of most of the leg north of my kneecap. I looked at myself in the mirror. After forcing away the look of someone having a stick up their butt, I pasted a smile on my face and batted my eyelashes. This bait would work on Mark. I was sure of it. Luckily, I was wearing shoes that matched, but then again, who would be looking at my shoes. I had enough going on up top, no one would even suspect I had feet.

I paid and put my work clothes in the shopping bag. My heart pounded as I walked, feeling the air fall on the open places of my new outfit. I squeezed my legs together as tight as I could in order to sit down in my car, my skirt jumping an extra three inches from the new position. It took me ten minutes, and I was back at Mark’s house. The sight of his car ramped up my adrenaline. I glossed my lips in the rearview mirror and scrunched my hair. Showtime.

Mark answered the door on the second set of knocks. He jumped slightly when he saw me. “Miss me?”

“Amy? What are you doing here?”

“Are you going to let me in or what?”

Mark moved and ushered me inside. I was trying hard to concentrate, past all the loud thumps that echoed inside my ears. “I didn’t want there to be any hard feelings from the other night. I hope there are none.” Channeling Angelina Jolie, come in Angie. Help me land this one.

“There aren’t any hard feelings. You’re my patient’s wife, and I’m your husband’s doctor. There is nothing more to it.” He said it slowly, looking me up and down.

I pulled him by his tie. “I don’t think I got the grand tour before. Let me see your bedroom.”

My words raised his eyebrows. “What?”

“I’m talking about channeling the bad girl in me, Mark. You’re obviously well versed in bad girl. I’ve broken some of the rules. Lied to your boss, lied to mine, wanted you since that day at the mall. Now why not go all the way?” Despite the reason I was there, my body craved him like air to a buried set of lungs.

“Amy, you’re upset. You don’t know what you’re saying.”

I shook out my hair. I thought a few whips of my head and I would look like the wanton woman that I was genetically challenged to ever be. But, he wasn’t budging from his neutral zone. “Don’t you want me? Am I not attractive, Mark?”

I grabbed him by the butt and thrust myself into him. He closed his eyes, and I stole an open-mouthed kiss from him. He pushed me off and adjusted himself.

Guest Post – Chasing the Wind

Y’all, I’m beyond thrilled to welcome Hannah today as she answers a few questions for us.  Her newest Aspen Valley book, Chasing the Wind, is getting fantastic reviews, which is not a surprise since the rest of the series is well loved as well.

Check out the below and then go find her on Amazon.  Surely one of these great books will strike your fancy!

*****

*What do you like best about writing romances?

There are lots of reasons why I enjoy writing romance novels, but I think what tops it all is being allowed to fall in love with each new hero (and some old ones too!) and feeling that tightening in my stomach when he looks that way at the heroine or touches her for the first time.

*What is your favorite romantic story (movie/book, fact/fiction)?

Hmm, can I choose more than one? I have been a die hard Dirty Dancing fan since I first saw it aged 6. How can anybody not love Jonny Castle? It also taught me a lot about the art of writing romances too. Its popularity comes not only because of Patrick Swayze doing his sexy thang but also from Baby, who was the girl everyone could relate to and who wasn’t just another Hollywood babe. I try to keep that lesson in mind when building my own heroines.

In the book world, it would have to be The Thorn Birds. A great tome of a book, it is VERY tragic, but the love between the main characters is so strong that I totally swooned the first time I read it. There was just one love scene in the whole book, and it barely covered a quarter of the page, so it wasn’t very graphic either, but boy was it worth it! And it got me thinking – why was this ‘bonding’ so intense and so earth-moving? I learnt another big lesson about romance writing from that. It’s that forbidden love is always the most delicious, hence why so many of my novels have that theme.

*If you could be any romantic character, who would it be and why?

To be honest, if I could be any romantic character it would be my own heroine Pippa Taylor from Keeping the Peace – not only is she the gutsiest, most resourceful and kind-hearted person I’ve ever come across but she also gets together with Jack Carmichael, who, of all my heroes, remains by far at the top of the heap. If I can’t choose from one of my own novels then I’d probably have to go with Holly Colshannon from Playing James, and mostly because she gets to ride off into the sunset with Detective James Sabine who is dee-lish.

*Which of your characters/books was the most fun to write?

I always loved writing Pippa and Jack. They started out in Keeping the Peace in what was meant to be a single book, but they just had so much chemistry and so much depth to offer that I had to make an entire five book series involving them (the Aspen Valley series). Another favourite character is Finn O’Donaghue. He was always a delight to write. I’m not sure how it is possible for a character to have a better sense of humour than the author but Finn manages it just fine. And he’s not always the holiest of characters either, but his naturally charisma has made him a favourite with readers. He features mainly in the first Aspen Valley book Keeping the Peace and the last one Chasing the Wind.

*If you weren’t a writer and could be anything you want, what would it be?

Gosh, I really have to think about that one. Probably a creative writing tutor, which I already am. I spent 15 years doing a variety of jobs I was totally unsuited to before finally settling down to be a Serious Writer, and I can honestly say I’ve never been happier. It’s not hard when I get to surround myself with such fantastic characters.

Excerpt:

JACK’S OFFICE DOOR clicked open as he disconnected his phone call. Pippa butted it wide with the pushchair while twenty-two-month-old Gabrielle waddled in behind her. Pippa looked desperate.

‘Can you look after Gabby this morning?’

‘Pippa–’

‘Please, Jack? Only until eleven or so. The council have called a last minute meeting and I can’t tackle them with her with me.’

Jack looked unenthusiastically at his daughter leaving dirty fingerprints on the glass cabinet that showcased Aspen Valley Stables’ victories then back at his wife. ‘Do you have to go?’

Pippa looked appalled. ‘Of course I must. Art Attack is my responsibility. What would that say about my dedication to the cause if I don’t show up? The community centre will be torn down for sure and –’

‘Okay, okay.’ Jack held up his hands in defeat. ‘No later than eleven, though, right? I need to leave for Stratford before noon.’

The lines on Pippa’s face vanished. Standing on tiptoe and balancing herself against his hips, she kissed him. ‘Wonderful man.’

Pippa tasted like strawberries. Seeing the effort she’d made with her appearance sparked a flare of arousal in him. His wife’s thumbs rotating over his hips did nothing to lessen it. ‘The council don’t know what they’re getting themselves into. ’Tis a brave man to take you on.’

‘You took me on.’

‘My point exactly,’ Jack replied with mock modesty.

Pippa kissed him again. ‘None so beautiful as the brave. I’ll see you later.’ His mobile rang again and she released him. ‘I’ll let you get on,’ she mouthed.

‘Knock ’em dead,’ he called after her, then turned to answer his phone. ‘Yeah, Quint?’ He returned Pippa’s departing wave with a distracted hand. He gave a frustrated sigh when the jockey’s agent told him Mick Farrelly wouldn’t be available to ride for him.

‘How long is Rhys out of commission?’ Quint asked.

‘He’s bust up his knee pretty bloody bad – Gabby, hey!’ Jack darted forward and took the Galway Plate they’d won over the summer away from Gabrielle’s inquisitive jaws. ‘You’ll give yourself metal poisoning or something. Sorry, Quint. What were we saying?’

‘Rhys Bradford’s injury?’

‘Oh, yeah.’ Jack shook his head. The season had barely begun and Aspen Valley’s star jockey had already been ruled out after an ugly fall at Warwick. ‘He’ll be out for the whole season, doctors reckon.’

Quint sucked his teeth in sympathy. ‘Thought it looked serious. But you never know. The docs underestimate these guys.’

Jack looked grimly at Gabrielle slobbering over a photo frame on his desk. ‘I think this time they might be right.’

‘Well, hey. You know Mick is always happy to ride for you when he can. But he’s only just got this retainer with Jonny Levine. He’s got to stay ultra-loyal right now.’

Gabrielle climbed onto a chair then onto Jack’s desk and wavered. Jack darted an instinctive arm out to steady her.

‘Yeah, I know. Okay, Quint. Tell Mick good luck.’

‘Sure. See ya.’

Jack dropped his phone in his pocket and tried to manoeuvre Gabrielle off his desk. The toddler kicked the desk phone out of its cradle and sat down with a bump, flattening a Racing Post calendar.

Jack stifled a sigh. Gabrielle looked up at him and gurgled in amusement.

‘It’s not funny, young lady.’

‘Da!’

Jack’s annoyance quickly dissipated at that magic word. He passed her a couple of highlighter pens and flipped open his Entries and Declarations notepad to a blank page.

‘Here. Why don’t you draw?’ He clicked off the lid of the pink pen. Gabrielle put it in her mouth. ‘No, no, no. Don’t do that. Just draw. Here. Okay?’ Jack took her hand in his and moved it over the paper. ‘See?’

Satisfied that she was sufficiently occupied, Jack picked up the swinging telephone and pressed the Intercom button that linked his office with Reception next door. ‘Dale? You there?’

After the dismissal of his last secretary the previous season, Jack hadn’t wanted to risk another debacle and had hired a male secretary. However, what he hadn’t realised at first was Dale Campbell, his very own British-Caribbean extravaganza, was as gay as John Peel’s coat. But he’d shown no inclination to disrupt Jack’s marriage and he was ten times more efficient than Saskia had ever been, so Jack was satisfied he had a keeper at last.

‘Reading you loud and clear, Space Commander,’ replied Dale.

Jack frowned at the phone. ‘We need a jockey for the 2.10, 2.40 and 4.10 at Stratford today. Can you ring around, see who’s available?’

‘No problem – oh, Jack? Emmie’s said Peace Offering is still off his feed.’

Jack bit his lip. The yard’s Grand National hero had been retired at the end of last season after a string of disappointing runs, but ever since the rest of the horses had gone back into work, Peace Offering had gone into decline.

‘All right, I’ll have a word with her, see what we can do.’

‘And that reporter, Lucy Kendrick, is still waiting for an answer on if she can shadow you.’

Jack tutted. ‘For how long?’

‘A month.’

‘A month? Christ, what sort of article is she writing?’

‘Maybe it’s more of a novel than an –’

A smash from behind him tore Jack’s attention away. ‘Gabby! What are you doing?’

‘Do you want me to tell her no?’ Dale asked.

‘No, it’s fine. But no more than two weeks.’ Jack tried to wrestle the Galway Plate away from Gabrielle. ‘And make it soon before the season gets busy.’

No sooner had he replaced the office phone than his mobile rang. Jack growled under his breath. Gabrielle jumped up and down on his desk, not caring that the picture of her, Pippa and Peace Offering was fracturing beneath her red Wellington boots. In one fluid movement, Jack swooped her off the desk with one arm and answered his phone with the other.

‘Jack Carmichael,’ he barked, unnecessarily forceful.

‘Jaysus, your telephone manner is shite,’ said the caller.

Gabrielle squirmed in his arms and he let her slide down his leg.

‘Who is this?’

‘Declan O’Keefe. I’ve to be givin’ you some ’flu jabs this week?’

Jack pursed his lips. Isn’t this why he’d hired a secretary? ‘Yeah, thanks, Declan. Is that something you can arrange with Dale?’

Gabrielle waddled over to the office window and stood on tiptoe to look out. She let out a loud squeal that made Jack’s eardrums quake and Declan exclaim, ‘What the feck was that?’

Gabrielle bounced in her red boots and slapped the window. ‘Shanda! Shanda! Shanda!’

Jack could feel a tension headache developing in his left temple. He looked outside to where the large steaming frame of Shenandoah, a flashy liver chestnut with a broad white face and four stockings, was being led across the yard after his workout. He sighed. He’d only himself to blame. Pippa had told him that buying Gabrielle a racehorse when she was so young was stupid but he’d gone ahead and done it anyway. Now Gabrielle saw it as her right to visit ‘Shanda’ at all hours of the day or night.

Jack plugged one ear and raised his voice above Gabrielle’s squeals. ‘Speak to Dale about the ’flu shots. There’ll be some alterations because of non-runners –’ He threw Gabrielle an impatient look. ‘Gabby, keep it down, will you? I’m trying to talk – wait, don’t do that, you’ll fall.’ Jack grabbed her arm and pulled her down from the window sill. Gabby howled. ‘And I need to talk to you about Dexter. He’s not right. I want x-rays done of his back –’

‘You talkin’ to me or Gabby now?’

‘Shanda! Shanda!’

‘Oh, for Christ’s sake, hold on.’ Jack grabbed her hand and marched her to the door. In Reception, he found Dale talking to a stocky young man with a broad Eastern European face.

‘Jack, this is Stefan. He was meant to have his induction this morning?’

Jack bit back a curse. With all the drama around Rhys’s injury, he’d forgotten he had a new member of staff starting. He tossed his mobile to Dale who caught it in surprise. ‘Organise the ’flu shots with Declan,’ he said. ‘Sorry to keep you waiting.’

‘No problem. I can see you have your hands full.’ Stefan smiled, his eyes crinkling and grasped Jack’s hand in a firm grip.

‘Just a bit.’ He looked down at Gabrielle, who was momentarily mesmerised by Stefan’s presence. ‘How much experience do you have in a racing yard?’

‘About five years in flat racing in Germany. And the past two years at Jonny Levine’s down in Cornwall.’

Jack nodded. Jonny Levine was one of Jack’s biggest rivals for the trainers’ championship. He didn’t employ jackasses. ‘What’s your riding weight?’

‘Sixty-five kilos.’

‘I can’t offer you anything more than seasonal work.’

Stefan’s smile broadened. ‘Not a problem. I’ll take what I’m offered.’

‘Good –’ At the end of his arm, Gabrielle was getting fractious again.

‘Wanna see Shanda!’ she cried, her lower lip sticking out like a pink slug.

Jack sighed. He couldn’t conduct an interview with her screaming her head off. ‘Hang on a sec, Stefan.’

He walked across Reception with Gabrielle trotting beside him and opened the office door. ‘Emmie!’ he called. ‘Wait up a minute. Gabby wants to say hello to Shenandoah.’

With Gabrielle out of his hair, he turned back to Stefan. ‘You’ll probably only have a couple of horses to look after, at least until the sales. I know The Weekend is without a full-time groom –’

His office telephone rang shrilly and Jack swore beneath his breath. With a quick apology to Stefan, he hurried back into his office and snatched up the desk phone, finding it sticky from Gabrielle’s curious grasp. ‘Hello –’

Jack didn’t even register the caller’s reply as a scream from outside pierced the window. He rushed around his desk and looked out. Billy was fumbling with two fretful horses while Emmie dropped to her knees. Jack’s chest tightened at the sight of the rumpled red parka and red Wellington boots askew on the ground. Fear, so intense he felt his blood pressure plunge to his feet, flooded his body.

‘Gabby!’ Jack tore out of the office. ‘Gabby!’

Shenandoah reared at his thunderous approach, pulling Billy skyward. Jack skidded to his knees beside his daughter. Emmie looked at him with tears staining her face.

‘I’m sorry, Jack. I don’t know – I didn’t think – It happened so fast. I couldn’t stop him.’

Jack’s heart leapt into his throat. Like the pounding of a bass drum, his blood pulsed in his ears. Gabrielle lay on her back on the damp red cobbles, one arm outstretched, her plump fingers curled, grubby from the ground.

‘Gabby, can you hear me? Wake up, sweetheart,’ Jack said, his voice breathless and urgent.

‘I couldn’t stop him, Jack. I didn’t know he’d do that,’ Emmie continued. ‘She just ran towards us.’

Jack barely heard her. Gabrielle was unconscious, her face resting to one side. ‘Did she hit her head? What happened?’ He smoothed the little girl’s red gold hair away from her cheek and resisted the urge to hug her to his chest, safe from harm. With trembling hands, he cupped her face and turned her head to straighten her spine. The hidden side of her face came into view. Muddied, grazed and bloodied.

Emmie cried harder at the sight. ‘I’m sorry, Jack. He just struck out at her.’

A shiver ran through to his bones as Gabrielle’s scalp moved beneath his hand. Amidst the tangles of her hair around his fingers, he felt a warm stickiness. He lifted his palm to reveal the blood on it. His breath shuddered out of him.

This was just a dream. A sick dream. One he would be ashamed to have conjured up when he awoke, but a dream nonetheless.

A blustery wind blew through the yard, funnelled by the stable walls and brought with it a smattering of raindrops, a faint howl like a siren wailing, a child crying. Jack looked up at the fox weathervane atop the red-tiled roof, dark against the gunmetal sky, juddering as the wind blew it north-west. Whinnies from horses, the clip-clop of their hooves echoed, so far away, so distant.

‘Is she – is she – is she okay?’ Emmie’s hiccupping voice brought him back.

Gabrielle lay beside him, her eyes closed, a speck of mud on her parted lips. No, not mud. Blood. Bile bubbled into his throat and he regained his sense of awareness. This was no dream.

He dipped his ear to the girl’s mouth, listening for her breath. He couldn’t tell, the wind was too disruptive. He grappled in his pockets and muttered an oath. Where was his phone? Cradling Gabrielle’s face with one hand, he looked around. ‘Call 999!’ he yelled. Blank faces stared back at him. Horses pitched their ears forward at the unusual panic in their master’s voice. ‘Call an ambulance, goddammit! Call an ambulance!’

Author Info:

Hannah Hooton is a multiple award-winning author and screenwriter based in UK.

After splitting with her literary agent to venture into indie-publishing, Hannah burst onto the contemporary romance scene in January 2012 with the release of her debut novel, At Long Odds. This was followed by the Amazon bestselling Aspen Valley series, which charts the lives, loves and dramas of a jump racing yard.

The inspiration for her novels came while combining her wanderlust with her love of horseracing when travelling around Australia and working from one racing stable to the next as a strapper (not to be confused with stripper) and the exuberant imagination of a girl with an empty purse and a passion for a very expensive sport.

Giving Chase was the winner of Best International Romance at the Some Kind of Wonderful Awards in 2012, one place better than Keeping the Peace finished the year before.

Share and Share Alike won the ARU Katy Price Prize 2014 and finished runner-up in the RWA Marlene Contest 2014.

Recently graduating from Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge with First Class Honours, Hannah was also awarded the McCleod Prize for finishing top of her year.

Hannah balanced her time at university writing her novels and improving her craft, but also learning the art of screenwriting. To date, Hannah has completed three screenplays (one of which sparked her abrupt change in career to return to university as a mature student just so she could learn how to write it properly), all of which received critical praise and first class marks. The feature-length script, Incarnate, is a science fiction WW2 drama with romantic elements, a world – quite literally – away from Hannah’s comfort zone of horse racing romances.

by Karen Rock

Releasing March 1, 2016

Harlequin: Heartwarming

Blurb:

Would he still love her…if he knew?

Tanner Hayes smashed Claire’s life to pieces when he chose the rodeo over her ten years ago. And now he’d wrecked her truck! Fantastic. She’d lost her husband, the family ranch was mired in debt, her father was recuperating from a stroke and her son was being bullied. Why not throw a reckless bull rider into the mix?

All she’d wanted was a safe, stable life. But with Tanner back in town—and staying on her ranch—nothing was safe, or under control. Not the feelings she’d fought so hard to forget. Not the son she was determined to protect. And certainly not her long-held secret…

Excerpt:

Everything happened at once and in slow motion.

A crushing jolt shuddered through the truck. Her wheels skidded sideways. She smacked against the window when her pickup rolled down an embankment, as if punched by something large and lethal. Glass rained deadly sharp. The earth tumbled around her, her truck in spin cycle. When a massive tree loomed, the Chevy slammed into it then stilled.

Winded and stunned, she hung upside-down in her lap belt, blood, metallic and warm, on her tongue, a rushing sound whistling in her ears. Her heartbeat changed and grew slow and rolling in darkness. Something hurt, a long way away. Then nothing.

“Ma’am. Ma’am. Are you all right?” A man’s voice shouted, rousing her. She tried turning her head but pain held it in place. When she opened her mouth, silent panic flew out.

“Hold on. I’m getting you out of there.”

Acrid smoke pierced her consciousness. She closed her eyes against the billowing grit.

This wasn’t happening. It was a dream. No. A nightmare.

A tugging motion jerked her right and left, followed by a ripping sound. Large hands halted her sudden fall.

“Got you.”

Her rescuer cradled her against his chest, his breaths heaving beneath her ear. After carrying her some distance, he lowered her slowly to the ground. Grass scraped against her stinging cheeks and she opened her eyes.

“What?” she croaked, then swiped at the trickle leaking from her mouth. A man wearing a cowboy hat hunched over her, his features blurred.

“You’ve been in an accident. We have. Our trucks collided in the intersection.”

“My truck!” She bolted upright and clutched the swirling ground.

An arm snaked around her back and eased her down. “I called the dispatcher. The fire department’s on the way.”

A wail sounded in the distance and Claire wanted to shriek with it.

Her special day. Her anniversary. Ruined. No. Demolished by this…this…

She squinted upward and focused. A dark swirl of hair brushed across the tall man’s forehead; a light scar zigzagged down his square jaw. Recognition zapped through her.

It couldn’t be…

“Tanner?”

“Hello, Claire.” His mouth went up, just a fraction—the same ready-for-anything smile that had once undone her.

She closed her eyes, heart thudding. Ten years since she’d vowed never to see him again…and now here he stood, two for two in wrecking her life.

Excerpt:

“You can’t leave now.” He didn’t have time to hash this out. And he would damn well have his way.

“I’m going after the press conference. I told you I would come back for the pre-season, and now it’s done.” Frowning, she twisted the bracelet round and round on her wrist. “I shouldn’t have returned this year at all, especially if this ends up causing hard feelings between us. But I can send your next assistant all my files.”

How kind. He clamped his mouth shut against the scathing responses that simmered, close to boiling over. He deserved better from her and she knew it.

But if she was going to see him through the press conference, he still had forty minutes to change her mind. Forty minutes to figure out a way to force her hand. A way to make her stay by his side through the season.

All he needed was the right play call.

“In that case, I appreciate the heads-up,” he said, planting his hands on her waist and shuffling her away from the door. “But I’d better get this press conference started now.”

Her eyes widened as he touched her, but she stepped aside, hectic color rising in her cheeks even though they’d always been just friends. He’d protected that friendship because it was special. She was special. He’d never wanted to sacrifice that relationship to something as fickle as attraction even though there’d definitely been moments over the years when he’d been tempted. But logic and reason—and respect for Adelaide—had always won out in the past. Then again, he’d never touched her the way he had today and it was messing with his head. Seeing that awareness on her face now, feeling the answering kick of it in his blood, made him wonder if—

“Of course we need to get to the conference.” She grabbed her earpiece and shoved it into place as she bit her lip. “Let’s go.”

He held the door for her, watching as she hurried up the hallway ahead of him, the subtle sway of her hips making his hands itch for a better feel of her. No doubt about it, she was going to be angry with him. In time, she would see he had her best interests at heart.

But he had the perfect plan to keep her close and the ideal venue—a captive audience full of media members—to execute it. As much as he regretted hurting a friend, he also knew she would understand at a gut level if she knew him half as well as he thought she did.

His game was on the line. And this was for the win.

Hot For the Scot FINALHot for the Scot

Kilted Heroes series

by Janice Maynard

Blurb:

In Janice Maynard’s sweet and sexy new series, three childhood friends with a shared passion for the Outlander novels and TV show decide to travel to Scotland looking for adventure—and their very own Highland heroes…

It’s a dream come true for schoolteacher Hayley Smith. No homework to grade, no students to corral, no social media, Internet or cell phone…just a month amid the heather and rolling hills around Inverness. A brawny alpha male in a kilt is probably too much to ask for. But Hayley is in heaven ambling around Loch Ness, gazing and then…falling into the icy water, before being rescued by a strong, chivalrous local hero…

Retired soccer star Angus Munro, aka Angus the Angler, is a little insulted and a whole lot intrigued when Hayley doesn’t recognize him. How long has it been since anyone saw beyond his wealth and fame? And how long before the macho athlete and his modern-day American damsel in distress act on an attraction that could make even the misty Scottish moors sizzle with heat? Long enough, maybe, for both to figure out if this is an affair to remember…or the start of something everlasting…

Excerpt:

I had heard the refrain a million times growing up: Those two girls are like sisters to you, Hayley. Don’t ever let them go.

But inevitably, I had. In fourth grade, McKenzie’s well-heeled parents enrolled her in private school. About that same time, Willow’s dad walked out. Willow’s mom couldn’t keep up with the house payments on her own, so she and Willow had been forced to move all the way to the other side of Atlanta to live with relatives.

I was the one left behind to grow up in the neighborhood where we had spent so many happy times.

Then came Facebook. Right off the bat, it was apparent that our lives had taken far different tracks. Ironically, I now taught third grade in the elite private school where McKenzie spent most of her grammar school career.

Willow owned Hair Essentials, a beauty salon located in a nice middle-class suburb of Atlanta. Her approach to money was save, not spend.

McKenzie had completed an Ivy League education and now filled her days doing charity work with a number of Atlanta-area organizations. She was beautiful and sophisticated and had traveled the world. But underneath it all, she was still the little kid who refused to be afraid of dogs or spiders and wanted to be friends with everyone. I’d always envied her confidence.

Without McKenzie, Willow and I wouldn’t be in Europe at all.

Our plan was to stay together tonight at the hotel adjacent to the train station in Inverness. Then tomorrow morning, we would all three go our separate ways. My mood skittered back and forth between exhilaration and terror.

I tapped the notebook where I had underlined the final piece of our plan. “And remember. Every night at nine o’clock, or as close as we can make it, we’ll turn on our phones and check for any emergency messages from each other.”

McKenzie nodded. “I won’t forget. Willow knows her way around the mean streets, but no offense, Hayley, you’re the one I’m worried about.”

Her remark was fair enough, but it stung nevertheless. “I’ll be fine, McKenzie,” I said automatically. The truth was, I had my doubts. I wasn’t an experienced traveler. Still, McKenzie’s offer had been impossible to resist. She paid for all three of our first-class plane tickets and for three train fares as well. All Willow and I had to cover was lodging and food. Immersing myself in this kind of trip was the opportunity of a lifetime.

McKenzie was Willow’s opposite in almost every way. Her family had money…serious money. Old Georgia wealth that grew even in financial hard times. The impetus for this bucket-list trip was a bequest from McKenzie’s paternal grandmother. Instead of putting her inheritance away for a rainy day, McKenzie decided she wanted to go to Scotland. With us.

I loved Willow, too. At the moment, though, I was ready to murder both of them.

Inverness couldn’t get here soon enough…

Excerpt:

Callum Blake growled and grabbed his forearm. He opened his clenched fist as the nails on his hand morphed into long dark claws. He gritted his teeth and closed his eyes as he fought the urge to shift. He pounded the tree and glanced up at the night sky and prayed in agony to the wolf goddess. He pleaded for help. He’d take anything she had to offer if it would provide even the smallest amount of relief.

Nothing. The pain continued. He shook his head and grimaced in an attempt to remove the fog that was starting to shroud his mind. He silently cried out to her again.

Why are you silent? You’re the reason I took this mission and now you’re allowing me to suffer?

His frustration mingled with his physical pain, adding to his misery. The beast fought its way to the surface. He opened his mouth and howled. A mixture of a roar and a yell, it relieved some of the tension within him, but it did not drive away the urge to shift. Leaning against the tree, he dug his claws into the bark, burrowing deep grooves as he exerted his strength against the muscle contraction. His pulse pounded in his ears as sweat poured down on his face. Unlike his wolf self who resided peacefully inside of him, his lycan did not have the same kind of placating nature. It yielded only to the strongest of commands exerted to it from his mind. It was supposed to live in harmony just as his inner wolf, but it refused.

For wolf shifters, their human and wolf self were like two individuals abiding in one nature. One innately human, sharing some of the same abilities and desires as regular people only with keener senses and more powerful instincts. The other, their wolf side was wild and untamed. It acted on a gut responses, using its innate sixth sense to interact with the world around it. The wolf freely gave into its passions, choosing strength and cunning over calculated reasoning.

The lycan, however, was a being whose nature lived far beyond that of the wolf. Not present in all wolf shifters, it was like a curse of their wolf self causing them to revert to a primitive version of their wolf self. Acting on impulse and rage, the lycan did not use reason or soft emotions like joy, love, and happiness, it understood violence.

Book Review – Moonstone Beach

27263582Moonstone Beach

Main Street Merchants series

by Linda Seed

Kate Bennet owns a small bookstore in Cambria, California—the kind of shop that smells like mildew, furniture wax, and old pages, the kind where you’ll find a cat napping atop the used biographies. Two years out from a divorce that left her emotionally fragile, Kate is starting to think that maybe she’s ready for love again—or at least for a fling with a hot man. Jackson Graham is a local chef who’s controlling when it comes to food, careless when it comes to women, and temperamental when it comes to just about everything.

When Kate’s friends mobilize to set things up between Kate and Jackson, she expects some casual pleasure followed by a hasty goodbye, but Jackson’s long-term crush on Kate means that he’s in this one to win. The problem is, neither he nor Kate knows whether he can change the self-defeating habits that usually send women scurrying for the door as soon as the afterglow fades.

Throw in a beautiful backdrop of rocky beaches and rugged coastline, a manipulative father, a Mary Kay–pushing stepmother, a yapping Pomeranian, and a nervous ring-tailed lemur, and you’ve got Moonstone Beach, the first contemporary romance in a series of four about Kate and her friends, Gen, Lacy, and Rose.

I’m super excited about this series!  I really enjoyed seeing Kate and Jackson come together and bring out the best in each other.

Kate doesn’t do enough to stand up for herself but Jackson, who can be a little too abrasive :), shows her the support she needs.  He isn’t the most sensitive person (*snicker*) and can be a bit much for most people, but she sees the good below the rough surface and knows how to handle him.  It helps that he feels enough for her that he’s willing to try harder than he ever has before.  Of course that doesn’t stop him from making some bonehead moves but he also knows enough to make things right.

Moonstone Beach is a great story about a couple of people who are feeling their way into a relationship and can’t help but make a mistake or two – just like real life 🙂  Seed’s writing is so smooth that this was a very fast read for me.  And she also does a great job of introducing the secondary characters in a way that makes it just enough  that readers will be ready for the rest of the series but doesn’t take away from Kate & Jackson’s story.

Buy on Amazon … and while you are there get the second book, Like That Endless Cambria Sky, as well 🙂

Guest Post – Sex Lies & Fruit Flies

Tags

Got another great book for you this weekend.  It’s also getting absolutely fantastic reviews on Amazon – and you can get it for only 99 cents right now (or free with Kindle Unlimited!)

Best of all, the fabulous Paullina stopped by to share a little with us.  Enjoy!

*****

*What do you like best about writing romances?

I love love. So it’s only natural I write romance. Love in ‘real life’ isn’t always great and beautiful, so I like to be able to put my spin on what I think love should be at that moment I’m writing. My romance is never about just sex, I have to have a love element. I know some people hate that, but I have to be true to me when I write. I have to be true to those that enjoy my work.

*What is your favorite romantic story (movie/book, fact/fiction)?

I can’t name one favorite, I have so many. I think I’ve found my one favorite and then I read another book and I’m swept away again. To name a few I really enjoy Love Story by Erich Segal. I really loved The Air He Breathes by Brittainy Cherry. I enjoyed Landslide by N.J. Cole. There are too many to name.

*If you could be any romantic character, who would it be and why?

I would be Belle, from Beauty and The Beast. I loved that movie as a child and now as an adult I love it as well. Maybe it has something to do with my love of paranormal romance. I like alpha males even if he does turn into a big hairy beast.

*Which of your characters/books was the most fun to write?

I loved writing for my main female character, Morgan, in Sex Lies & Fruit Flies. She is  fun and learning about herself and love. I like her and her messy life.

*If you weren’t a writer and could be anything you want, what would it be?

I would be a bunch of different things. I would be a nurse, a dolphin trainer, a teacher. I would be anything that would allow me to be with people and run my mouth. I need human interaction and I want to make people happy, so anything that would fit into that box.

Excerpt:

Preface

The skies darkened as the storm descended. Leland had run to check on our elderly neighbors for the last time before we sheltered in place. I watched him enter their house through one rain smeared window and kept a lookout for her in another. It was our chance to run. Mom and I had been planning for this and we had been perfecting our getaway ever since hurricane Katrina had put fear into the hearts of everyone along the eastern coastline. We weren’t even sure we would survive the swim, but we had to try.

Anxiety rippled through me as the rains fell angrily on our little island and the winds bent the palm trees nearly to the ground. I watched, making sure he was still with the neighbors as I waited for her call. Then I heard it. Mom yelped from the pier. I jumped up and peeked out the kitchen window. Leland was still preoccupied. I made a run for the front door buck naked. I had to get to the pier. I had to get to Mom. I was almost there when he saw me.

He yelled my name from the neighbors’ doorway. “Morgan!”

I refused to turn back.

Mom called my name louder. “Morgan!”

I was almost to her, almost to the pier. He was gaining on me. His feet grew louder as he came closer. My feet were louder, more urgent. I couldn’t figure out which hurt more, the stone rain pelting my bare skin or my bare feet hitting the wooden planks of the pier as I bolted for the rough dark waters. Then I felt his fingertips slide roughly from my shoulders down my back. I ran faster. He’d missed me, but not by far. He kept at it until my drenched, waist-length hair was within reach. “Gotcha!” He yanked me to the ground and started dragging me back toward our house. He didn’t say another word. He was used to me running, but this time was different.

I wasn’t going back. I yelped for Mom, kicking and screaming as I grasped at his hands, claws drawn. She came to my defense, jumping on his back and digging her claws deep into his flesh. He grunted and bucked, trying to shake her, but she stayed embedded in him until her poison seeped in and subdued him. He involuntarily released his grip on my hair as his body crashed to the soaked wooden planks.

She frantically helped me to my feet, almost falling in her efforts. My bloodied side didn’t slow us. We ran until the pier ended and dove headfirst into the angry ocean. Facing possible death was better than the existence we had there; Mom and I were sure. We took true form together, allowing the sea to fill our gills and heal my wounds. We swam wildly away from our hell side by side that night. We’d be hunted for this. It didn’t matter; there was no looking back.

Things are never as they seem. There are beliefs and traditions bigger than individuals. Most of us are blind to them until these beliefs threaten our present existence. If we knew what came before us, would we be living the way we are today? If people knew who we were, would we be treated fairly? Could love really be enough to conquer it all?

Chapter One

Morgan

The sun crept farther and farther into my room through the little spaces left between my blinds, finally forcing me from my comfy bed. I pulled back my sheet and retreated to my small bathroom. I wasn’t against the sun, I just wasn’t ready to get up yet. My morning swim would get me in the groove of things, I hoped. It was usually just the trick to get my day started. It hadn’t been as difficult to jump out of my bed when I could walk out the door to palm trees, an ocean breeze, and beautiful blue skies; now nothing really motivated me to get up. I was surrounded by concrete and buildings, and everyone was always in such a hurry. Still, I was adjusting to our new home. I brushed my teeth and splashed some water on my face before heading downstairs.

Mom was usually seated at the kitchen table by the time I made it downstairs in the morning, but that day her seat was empty. She’d left a note on the refrigerator under a miniature conch shell magnet.

Morgan,

I’m working an earlier shift at the hospital today. Another nurse called out sick. See you when you come in later.

Love,

Mom

I smiled reading her note. She always picked up the slack for anyone in need, especially when it came to her job. Nursing came naturally for us; I guess you could say it was in our blood. All the women back home were nurses to our people. It was what we were expected to do, though Mom and I truly enjoyed it. I sat and ate some leftover fish and mangos before heading upstairs to get dressed.

I wasn’t excited about swimming alone as Mom and I were usually each other’s excuse for not socializing with anyone else. The men in particular would always try to strike up conversation and we’d politely smile and nod at them before continuing our private socializing. We weren’t intentionally being rude, just trying to keep our distance from these naïve men who didn’t know any better. All they saw were beautiful women; our women always had that effect on human men. I walked out of the house and ten minutes around the corner, giving myself a pep talk about my solo swim. When I reached the pool, all eyes were on me as I stripped down to my modest black one-piece swimsuit. I held my breath under everyone’s intense gaze until I made contact with the water. I could finally breathe easy, swimming deeper until I could touch the pool’s bottom at twelve feet.

Life here was nice—different, but nice. I was still caged, just in a different way. We were trapped in a roomier cage here, forced to hide our true selves from everyone but each other. My mom, Irene, and I were used to keeping each other’s secrets though; that’s how it had always been. We had only been apart once, the year I’d been forced to live with my arranged fiancé, Leland. Mom planned a life for us away from our ancestral home and when the time came, we ran. She chose a place much different than our home in Florida, hoping to evade those that would eventually come looking for us. She chose Blacksburg, Maryland. There were no beaches near us, the women worked jobs outside the home, and you could choose whom you wanted to be involved with in any capacity. Back home those types of things weren’t an option, they were chosen for you. I knew I should’ve been thankful for the range of choices my new cage afforded me—and I was thankful—but choices mean nothing when you can’t exercise them freely.

Mom and I agreed we had to lay low and keep to ourselves. We were all each other had left. I was her protector and she was mine. She’d been eighteen, happy, and in love when she’d birthed me. Now she was a paranoid woman that kept to herself other than me and work. Even so, she’d been my best friend for twenty-two years. It was the way she liked it and it was the only way I had ever known until I’d gotten engaged against my will.

I finally surfaced after a few minutes of swimming below the surface. I’d almost forgotten I was swimming with humans and needed to pretend to catch my breath to blend in. I loved the feel of the water on my skin, even if it was just pool water. Since it was still early August we could’ve gotten away with going to the beach without being questioned about swimming in cold waters, but it was inconvenient with our work schedules and we risked running into our people. We tried to get in the water as often as we could. We headed to our townhome development’s indoor pool every day, sometimes a couple times a day. We even swam at night. There usually wasn’t anyone there at night, so we were free to be our real selves. It was the closest we’d come to open waters since we’d barely escaped Florida the year before. Hurricane Katrina had given us the cover we had desperately been waiting for to escape our people’s archaic ways. No matter the reason for our departure, I missed the warm sun on my bare skin. It had left its mark, though; we still had our sun-kissed skin and our long, wavy, coal black hair, dead giveaways we weren’t from around there.

The walk home after my 7 AM swim was peaceful. People were quiet that time of morning, and the warm breeze in my hair was a reminder of the few good things I’d left behind. A quick shower would rid me of the chlorine-laced water and my homesick thoughts before my weekly grocery store run. I had to pick up our greens, fruits, and fresh fish. We didn’t stray far from the diet we’d kept back home. We’d grown most of our food in St. Marcos and fished for the rest; going to any store for food was laughable back home. In such a warm climate and living practically on the beach, food was never scarce. The quality of it was sometimes questioned over the years, but it kept us fed so I couldn’t complain. I pulled back into the garage and carried the bags into the kitchen. I nibbled on some of the kale as I put the food away before tidying up the kitchen and starting up the stairs to get ready for work.

I chose a pair of soft pink scrubs and pulled my slightly damp hair into a ponytail that sat low on my neck, letting the loose ends hang free down my back. Heading out of the neighborhood and passing the mailboxes, I realized we hadn’t checked our box in a week or more. There was no point really; we didn’t know anyone in the area and no one was supposed to know where we were.

Oh great. The guy that always asked me out was there checking his mailbox too. I tried to wait for him to leave as long as I could, but I didn’t want to be late for work. Besides, it was probably no use; I was more than sure he knew I drove a white Jeep Wrangler from seeing me around the neighborhood. I thought he was waiting for me to get out, and with no time left I did just that. I jumped out of my Jeep and made my way over to the mailboxes.

“Good afternoon.” I spoke politely as I opened my mailbox on the opposite side of his. It was sad that he had been pursuing me since we’d moved there and I still didn’t know his name; I always just referred to him as the tall skinny guy when talking to Mom.

He seemed to light up like a Christmas tree when I greeted him. “Afternoon pretty!”

Here we go again. I snatched the junk mail out of the box and closed it back even faster. I turned and headed back toward my car.

Tall Skinny Guy ran to my side as I almost jogged to my vehicle. “Hey, what’s the rush?”

“I’m sorry, I have to get to work.” I never stopped.

He kept pace with me. “Well maybe I could take you out sometime. You can’t work all the time.” He sounded so optimistic, as usual.

“Sorry, I actually do work all the time.” I hopped into the driver’s seat and slammed the door shut, waving as I pulled off. He just sat there with his mouth open as I pulled away. He had probably wanted to say something else, but I wasn’t interested. Silly human men, they never learned.

Chapter Two

Morgan

I loved being a nurse and the trauma center Mom had chosen had been an exciting experience so far. Our traumas were everything from shootings and stabbings to car accidents. The hospital was situated in the perfect place, serving Maryland, DC, and sometimes Virginia. Our patients were as sundry as their accidents.

When I walked onto the unit I looked at the staffing board. I would be relieving my mother in ER/Trauma so this would be a breeze. Sometimes I floated to other units when the hospital was short on nurses, but I was thankful it wasn’t one of those days. She gave me report on three patients that were all situated and waiting for beds on the med-surg floors. She told me everyone else’s patients were heavy and needed extra time and attention. I helped as much as I could since my team was so light in terms of the level of care needed. I helped clean patients, turn patients, and feed patients.

After almost two hours of non-stop running, I was finally able to grab a drink of water. Mid-sip, a trauma rolled through our emergency room doors. My charge nurse called for help from all available nurses. I ran over to the trauma bay and lying there bleeding from the chest was the most beautiful man I’d ever seen. His blond chin-length ringlets were beautiful chaos strewn across his head. He was breathing, but his eyes were closed. The physician started speaking to him as I cut his shirt away, trying to find the exact source of the bleeding. The heat he emitted and his rock hard chest were more distracting than the blood that covered him. He ignored the physician’s questions and opened his eyes. They startled me—piercing crystal blue eyes stared back at me.

“That was my favorite shirt.” He grimaced.

“I’m sorry sir.” I smiled apologetically as I removed the crimson-stained gray fabric from his chest, letting it fall to his sides on the gurney.

The doctor continued his questioning, annoyed at this point. “Sir do you know your name?”

Finally he said, “My name is Francis Darin Wyatt and I’m 26 years old. I know my name, my age, where I am, and all that other mumbo jumbo. I’ve been shot and just need to be stitched up so I can get back to work.”

“What kind of work do you do sir?”

“I’m a police officer working undercover.”

The physician nodded his head and looked Mr. Wyatt’s wounds over. After thorough physical examination and x-rays, I was ordered to assist the physician as he sutured Mr. Wyatt’s wounds. It was a clean shot with an entry and exit point. It had missed everything that would have cost him his life. I was relieved at that fact, though this beautiful man was a complete stranger.

I formally introduced myself as I prepped his first wound for suture. “Mr. Wyatt, I’m Nurse Jacobs and I will be assisting Dr. Yancy with the suturing of your wounds today. Anything you need while you’re here, I’ll be happy to assist you with. Just ask. I have to ask you a few questions for my documentation and hopefully we’ll have you out of here in no time. Do you have any questions for me thus far?”

He replied mordantly, “No ma’am.”

He stared at my face as the doctor sutured his chest wound. It was uncomfortable being that close to him. He was a massive man, about six and a half feet tall and 210 pounds, but it wasn’t his size that intimidated me. It was his stare. It was like he could see right through me. It was like he knew what I was. Could he know? Then he squinted his eyes and tilted his head slightly to the side while focusing his gaze even more.

“You’re gorgeous. You’re not from around here are you?” His voice was so matter-of-fact, like he didn’t need an answer at all.

You’ve got to be kidding me. “Mr. Wyatt do you know who shot you?”

“No, but I asked you a question first.”

“And this was related to an assignment you were on with your job? Or was this personal?” I was uncomfortable and the doctor kept cutting his eyes in my direction as he sutured.

“I’m a police officer, most things that happen to me are both. Are you from around here?”

Alluring would have been an understatement for this creature. The human men were all the same, so why was I so engrossed in this one? Get it together Morgan.

“Mr. Wyatt, Dr. Yancy is just about finished with your sutures. Please just remain still until he’s done. I understand you’re annoyed and do not feel the need to answer my questions, so I’ll cease.” He complied with my request until the doctor left the room. As I removed my gloves, he decided to continue his interrogation.

“What happened to your hand?” He gestured toward my left hand. “The scar there, between your ring and pinky finger.”

I winced at his words and continued to the sink to wash my hands, ignoring his question. “Mr. Wyatt you’re all done, I’ll be back with your discharge instructions shortly.”

He abruptly stood, causing me to jump back. He didn’t step any closer, noticing my reaction. “Miss, I apologize. I didn’t mean to scare you, I was just making conversation. I’ve been here a few times over the years for gunshot wounds and such and I’ve never seen you and I…I’m sorry.”

I was backed against the wall nearest the door by then, frozen in trance as he stood almost a foot and half taller than my 125 pound frame. I finally spoke. “I’ll return shortly Mr. Wyatt.” I exited his room before he had a chance to part those beautiful cherry lips again.

When I reached the nurse’s station, I hurriedly printed Mr. Wyatt’s discharge instructions and tried to disguise my nerves. What is this guy’s problem? He wasn’t much older than me, so he couldn’t possibly know what I was. Older people had their tales of my people. He’s just being a typical human man, right? Then what is my issue? He was lighting me on fire in more ways than one. Why don’t these poor human men understand? My beauty is a trap. It’s how our women attracted a worthy mate and prey for our men. I was not supposed to be attracted to him. I just had to get him out of there and I’d be done with this. I knocked before entering his room again.

“Come in,” he said.

Trying to keep my emotions under control, I spoke evenly. “Mr. Wyatt, here are your discharge instructions and prescriptions per Dr. Yancy. He’s does not want you to lift that left arm above your head for one week. I’m going to help you into this sling and this is to remain on for the next 72 hours.” I noticed the other scattered scars along his arms and side as I helped him into the sling. Why were they turning me on? Focus Morgan.

“Is your ride waiting for you?”

He smirked. “Yes, my partner is here.”

His smirk conveyed the opposite of his words. I could have threatened to wheel him down myself, but I couldn’t risk spending any more time with this man.

He was still watching me. “Nurse Jacobs?” It was the first time during our uncomfortable encounter that he’d addressed me formally. “Nurse Jacobs?”

I snapped back to reality after he repeated himself, sounding unsure as he said my name this time. “Yes, Mr. Wyatt?” I forced myself to look him in his eyes. Why had I done that? The look of sheer will in his eyes made the hair on my neck stand on end.

“I know you think I’m a buffoon, but is there any way I could see you outside of here? Would you consider letting me take you out?”

He’s crazy. Is he looking for trouble? I smiled. “Mr. Wyatt, I do not date patients, but I wish you well.”

Before he could speak again the transporter was knocking at the door. “Oh look Mr. Wyatt, your ride is here.” A sigh of relief escaped me.

“Nurse Jacobs, I will see you again.” He gave a cunning look over his shoulder as he slid off the exam table and into the wheelchair the transporter had waiting at the door. He left the gown on the exam table, leaving bare-chested.

“See you later.” I chuckled as he and the transporter exited the room. Gosh I hope his ride has a shirt waiting for him in the car. I thought about him for the remainder of my evening. I finished up the rest of my shift incident free. Two of my patients had been admitted to the med-surg floor, leaving only one for me report on to the oncoming nurse. Our admissions had been pretty light that evening as most were able to be discharged home from the ER.

As wrong as it was, I wanted to see him again. It almost felt as if I needed to. Shame on me. At the end of my shift I walked slowly through the dimly lit parking garage as I thought of Mr. Wyatt. I had to shake this human. I wasn’t even sure exactly what it was about him—other than him obviously being gorgeous, he seemed like an arrogant, sarcastic jerk. I mean what type of person points out someone else’s flaws without knowing them? I rubbed the cut in between my ring and pinky finger, still annoyed at his invasive question. He clearly thought he was God’s gift to women. No sane person would insult a person they were trying to go out with. He was just interested in a pretty face, like all the other human men.

I finally reached my car and hopped in. I tried my best to think of other things, but it was no use; he still occupied my thoughts. The drive home was a blur full of him and his scent and his warm skin. I was a mess. If I were back in Florida, he would have been a marked man for pursuing me. What was I going to tell my mother? Today I stitched up a man that took my breath away. How sickening, I thought as I pulled into the garage next to my mom’s car.

*What do you like best about writing romances?

I enjoy the way the characters reveal themselves. I love the surprises that aren’t in my outline! I’m an outliner, not a pantser—but I happily take the twists and turns the characters throw at me during the writing process. The outline gives me a support system and a plan to fall back on, if the characters decide to play hard-to-get. I get very attached to my characters while I’m writing and I tend to cry (while writing) when bad things happen to them. I know they have to struggle to achieve what they want, but I feel their pain. Of course, I also feel excited for them when they pull off the impossible or have just the right comeback to the antagonist. There are a lot of voices in my head and it’s great to get some of them out of there and onto the page!

*What is your favorite romantic story (movie/book, fact/fiction)?

Practical Magic by Alice Hoffman – I love the way the sisters support each other in finding their individual happiness. I know this is not a typical romantic story, but the bond between the sisters is ultimately what helps each of them succeed. Sometimes we need someone who supports us AND calls us on our bullsh*t.

*If you could be any romantic character, who would it be and why?

“Vianne” from Chocolat by Joanne Harris. First and foremost because I would get to make and eat chocolate! However, I love the magic in that story and the relationship between Vianne and her daughter. I’m a sucker for strong women who buck the system and stand up for themselves (and family).

*Which of your characters/books was the most fun to write?

The third book in The Lake Effect Series – Finally My Favorite. It was exciting and rewarding to “wrap” up my favorite character’s storylines. I started the series being more attached to Gwenn, but by book three I was really feeling the love for Rachel. Having said that, I don’t think I will ever get over my deep appreciation for Todd. He is a minor character, but his wit and efficiency are quite close to my heart!

*If you weren’t a writer and could be anything you want, what would it be?

An angel.

Author Info:

Rue is an award-winning fiction author and reads voraciously. Her best friends have always been characters from her beloved books; and this love of reading led to a lifelong passion for writing.

Rue wrote her first manifesto at age three, a letter begging her grandfather to stop smoking. A note scrawled on a small pink piece of stationary, where she taped two dimes, and a nickel—his reward for quitting. The entreaty was successful and the power of the pen was instilled in her soul. Throughout her life she has written unceasingly, journals, poems, short stories, screenplays, and articles for newspaper and magazine. Her love of ink led her to pursue a B.A. in Journalism from Pepperdine University in California. She also suffers from a slight obsession with office supplies—mostly pens and fine paper.

She has already amassed two lifetimes of experience. Rue has been working for more than 30 years and has done everything from make dirt to run an independent film school. The number of characters that can be scooped out of the detritus is staggering.

The pen is truly mightier than the sword—and much more flexible.
