Excerpt:

“Open the box,” Becky said excitedly.

“Here?” I asked, my voice seeping with horror. “What if someone walks by?”

“Grow up. You’re an adult. You can have—”

“A big ol’ box of dildos?” I asked. “Is that what you were thinking? I’m thirty-six and if I want to carry around a box full of sex toys, that’s okay?”

“Well, when you say it like that, it just sounds weird.”

We burst into laughter which echoed throughout the car. This was why Becky was my best friend. She was the only person I could have had such a ridiculous conversation with.

“So who sent it?” Then she hit me on the shoulder. “You did have sex last night. I knew it. I can’t believe you lied to me. Who was it? Was it Riley?”

“Don’t be dense. If I’d had sex with Riley I would have been on the phone with you two seconds later bragging.” I rubbed my shoulder. “And I didn’t lie to you. I didn’t have sex with anyone last night. Not really.”

“Aha,” she yelled. “Wait. What do you mean not really?”

“I’m starving,  where do you want to eat?”

“Let’s go to Scores. It’s loud and no one will be able to overhear you telling me about your night.”

She took the box off my lap so I could drive. I pulled out of the garage and headed for the bar. Scores was a great idea. I needed a drink. Badly.

“Wow, Di. I had no idea you were into this stuff. I can’t believe there is anything about you I didn’t know. I’m kind of hurt.”

“I’m not into this stuff. I have never even seen this kind of crap before.”

“Right,” she said. “But you walked in this morning looking like the cat’s meow and then you get a big box of…it. I want to know what’s going on.”

“And I’ll tell you,.” I pulled into a spot in front of the bar and turned the car off. “But first, I need a big stiff drink.”

“If you want big and stiff check this out.”

I didn’t want to, but I looked at Becky to see that she was holding a huge black vibrator in her hand. She pressed the “on” button and it shook so hard I could see it moving her arm.

“Fuck. Turn it off and tape that box back up right now!”

“I could put this under the baby’s mattress, and I’ll bet he would sleep through the night for a change. It would be like one of those vibrating bouncers I saw at the store last week. Can I have it?”

“No.” I grabbed it out of her hand and shoved it back in the box.

“Greedy bitch,” she said, pretending to sound hurt. “You have a whole box of them.”

“I’m glad you are so amused. Can we go in now?” I opened the door and stepped out, closing the door on any comments she might have added.

Doris O'Connor, The Housewife and the Film Star

I’ve got another sneak peek at a new release – check out the below for The Housewife and the Film Star.  But be prepared, it is steamy ….

*****

THATFSTHE HOUSEWIFE AND THE FILM STAR

by Doris O’Connor

Blurb:  When International movie star Sven Larsson meets young widowed mum of three, Sylvia, the sexual chemistry between them is instant and explosive, and plastered all over the papers. Sven needs to repair his damaged reputation. The last thing he needs is another scandal, but the Dom in him can’t resist the challenge Sylvia represents.

Having survived an abusive marriage, Sylvia is not looking for another relationship, let alone a kinky one with a man of Sven’s reputation.  Her submissive side can’t help but be drawn to him, however, especially once she gets to know the man behind the public image.  This private, broken, Sven she cannot help but fall in love with, even if he doesn’t do love.

With the paparazzi breathing down their necks at every turn, and past demons raising their ugly heads, will they ever be able to find happiness?

Excerpt:

“Like what you see?”

Sylvia wrenched her gaze upwards to meet his eyes. He was watching her reaction from under heavy lidded eyes filled with lust and a grim determination that frightened her a little.

“Sven, I don’t think I could…”

Before she could even blink he was on the bed next to her, matching his long length to her much smaller frame. He grasped her wrists in one hand again and pinned her arms above her head. With a wicked smile he used just one finger of his free hand to slowly travel up the inside of her thigh. The slight pressure was torture, and by the time his thumb flicked her clit, she was a quivering mass of feminine excitement. How did he do that? Was it the unwavering focus with which he watched her reaction, or simply the way he once again had her pinned, unable to move?

“Trust me, baby, you can, and you will.”

The kiss that followed seemed never-ending. In direct contrast to his earlier urgency, he took his time exploring the inside of her mouth with a breathtaking thoroughness that spoke of ownership. The more she tried to hurry him, the slower he went, pressing his heavy body on top of hers, until the whole word narrowed to just the feel of him. Every stroke, nip and suckle of his oh so talented tongue, stoked the slow burning fire in her core to fever pitch, and her hips bucked wildly, needing his touch.

He straddled her, effectively stopping her from moving and looked down on her.

“Take it easy, we have all night, my little firecracker. We’ll do this my way, and unless you want me spanking that delicious ass of yours until it matches the color of your lips, you will not rush me.”

Sylvia couldn’t stop her sharp intake of breath, and Sven’s gaze grew even more heated.

“Oh, I see, you like that idea, do you?”

“N-no … I don’t.”

“Liar.” He whispered the word and lifted off her just enough to cup her swollen pussy. Sylvia swallowed her groan as he swiped his fingers through the wet evidence of her arousal, and then lifted his glistening fingers up for her to see.

He licked them clean and hummed his approval.

“Hmm, delicious. If you don’t like the idea of my hand on your ass, then why are you this wet?”

Sylvia had no answer for that, so she just shook her head.

“I don’t know. I don’t like violence.”

She screwed her eyes shut and pushed the memories away. They had no place here, none at all, damn it.

“Neither do I, my sweet, but I think we need to do something to stop those thoughts swirling in your head. Look at me.”

His voice had dropped an octave, the cadence of it so compelling that Sylvia had no choice but to comply.

“Bad memories?” he asked.

At her tiny nod he sighed and bent to kiss the tears off her face. She hadn’t even been aware of shedding them.

“I can help you with that, if you trust me?”

He went so still towering above her, she couldn’t be sure he was even breathing, and when she nodded again his smile of approval made her worries float away.

“Good girl, now roll over.”

He released her completely, and she felt suddenly bereft without his comforting presence. She awkwardly complied and jumped when he grabbed her ass and squeezed.

Instead of the hit she was expecting, however, he moved his hands up to her shoulders and kissed her neck. Tiny butterfly kisses followed down her exposed back until he reached the zipper of her dress. With agonizing slowness he peeled her out of her dress, murmuring encouragement when she helped him by lifting her arms and finally her hips, until she lay face down on the bed with just her bra still on.

Much to her surprise he left it in place and continued to run his hands up and down her back and over the curve of her ass. The strokes grew harder, leaving tingles of awareness in their wake, and the last of her anxiety fled.

Heat suffused her whole being, and she raised her butt into his hands, willing him to delve lower between her legs, where she practically ached for his touch.

He slapped her lightly on one ass cheek, and she froze.

“If this gets too much, just call red, and I stop, okay?”

She nodded, and a harder swat followed to her other butt cheek, which this time stung.

“I can’t hear you.”

“Yes, okay, errr, Sir?”

His laugh in answer confused her. He fisted his hand in her hair and pulled her head up to study her.

“Very nice, but that’s not really a salutation I’ve earned yet, and this is just a little spanking. I don’t think either of us is ready for anything else right now, are we?”

She blinked, and the red hot stab of disappointment coursing through her veins took her breath away.

“If we were to go down that route, we would have to discuss a lot of things first, my sweet. I’m not sure I want to do that. Let’s not assume titles and just enjoy ourselves, shall we? Unless this is something you need to—”

“No, I don’t. I mean, I’m perfectly happy with vanilla. I just thought that’s what you wanted. I mean … I…”

Her voice trailed off when his expression darkened.

“I thought you don’t read the papers, lady.”

“I-I don’t, but there’s been rumors and, well, I do have some experience.”

She mentally crossed her fingers at her fib. Sylvia had experience and then some, but he was right. She was so not ready to have that discussion now. It would dredge up a past she didn’t need to remember, not now.

The tight set of his shoulders relaxed slightly, and she breathed a sigh of relief. She really didn’t want to piss him off, and she was suddenly desperate to see if this would be as erotic as it had been—before Richard.

“So, you’re familiar with the traffic lights then?” he finally asked with a small smile.

“Yes, Si… I mean, yes I am.”

Heat rose in her cheeks under his quiet regard, and finally he nodded.

“So be it. I trust you to use it, not that I have any intention of being too hard on you, but I’ve fantasized about reddening that delicious ass of yours since I met you.”

He laughed at her astonished snort in response.

“You have?” she asked, not really believing a word of it. He had to be kidding. “No need to humor me. In case you haven’t noticed I’m in your bed and a pretty safe bet by now, you know.”

His expression darkened again, and her stomach dropped in delicious anticipation.

“For that inane comment you’ve just earned yourself some extra spanks. We’ll have to work on that warped self-image of yours. You’re a beautiful, desirable woman.”

Author PicAuthors Bio:

Glutton for punishment would be a good description for Doris… at least that’s what she hears on an almost daily basis when people find out that she has a brood of nine children, ranging from adult to toddler and lives happily in a far too small house, cluttered with children, pets, dust bunnies, and one very understanding and supportive husband. Domestic goddess she is not.

There is always something better to do after all, like working on the latest manuscript and trying not to scare the locals even more than usual by talking out loud to the voices in her head. Her characters tend to be pretty insistent to get their stories told, and you will find Doris burning the midnight oil on a regular basis. Only time to get any peace and quiet and besides, sleep is for wimps.

She likes to spin sensual, sassy, and sexy tales involving alpha heroes to die for, and heroines who give as good as they get. From contemporary to paranormal, BDSM to F/F, and Ménage, haunting love stories are guaranteed.

Georgia Le Carre, The Billionaire Banker

Check out the below for a sexy new book by Georgia Le Carre.

*****

CoverThe Billionaire Banker (Book 1)

by Georgia Le Carre

It was meant to be a simple arrangement.  Sex for money.  But she made a mistake and now his life will never be the same.

Synopsis:

When Lana Bloom learns the devastating news that her mother is dying, she is faced with a terrible dilemma.  The one thing that can save her is the one thing she does not have.  For young and innocent Lana, the unthinkable becomes her only choice.

But when she walks through the door of that exclusive restaurant she has no idea of the seismic shift her life is about to take, for the highest bidder will not be the rich man she has accompanied.  Fate drops her at the feet of the deeply mysterious and dazzlingly gorgeous American banker, Blake Law Barrington.  Throbbing with raw masculinity and arrogance, this is a man who owns all that he pursues.

And now he wants her.

Lana cannot deny she is both intrigued and intoxicated by the world Blake inhabits and the smouldering passion he stirs in her body, but she is also fearful for this man is addictive, and right now she is very vulnerable.  She knows she should focus only on the arrangement, but how can she…when he has opened a door that cannot be closed?

*****

Excerpt:

Lana closes her eyes.  She has drunk too much champagne.  The whole situation has become farcical and impossible for her to deal with in her present condition.  She feels the sting of defeat in her bones.  ‘What do you want from me?’

He leaves the door and walks towards her.  Again that sensation that he is predatory animal.  ‘Well for a start…’  He reaches her and suddenly jerks her towards him.  She falls forward and is pitched against his hard body.  Shocked she is filled with the scent that Rupert called old money and establishment.  Difficult to define, but it reminds her of rosemary, not because of its smell, but because it is so clear and distinct.  Nothing wishy-washy about it.

Everything takes on an unreal appearance.  The fabulously wealthy interior.  The man outside that door that wants to rape her for money.  The frighteningly remote man in front of her that brings into her body sensations she has never experienced before.  A pulse at the base of his throat is throbbing.  She watches it curiously.  She has never seen it in a man before.  And then an arm comes around her, a fistful of hair close to her nape is grasped and tugged so her face is tilted up towards him.  ‘This,’ he says and his mouth swoops down to possess hers.  His breath smells like brandy or whiskey.  Wicked, anyway.

News from Carly:

Dear Readers,

I know I’ve been teasing everyone for a while now about some exciting news that I have in the works. And I now have the official go-ahead to tell the world what’s coming next for me!   Are you ready? I’m so ready to share. I’ve been DYING to shout from the rooftops and have had a hard time keeping the news to myself. But here you go:

 I’m going Indie.

That’s right. Instead of publishing my next series of books with a traditional publisher, I’ve decided to self-publish the series.  Don’t worry, I’ll explain what this means for you.  But first …Why am I making the switching to Indie you ask?   Well after a lot of research and many debates with myself, I made the decision to self-publish my next series for one primary reason: YOU, my readers. The rise and success of self-publishing has obviously made a huge impact on the industry, and many of my readers have reached out to me personally, encouraging me to make some changes.

Although my publishers have always been very good to me and I’ve very much enjoyed working with them, there is a good reason for me to make the switch. More control.  Making the move to indie is giving me more control over my books. I’m no longer tied to a specific word count set by a publisher. I have more control over the editing process. I can make the final decisions on covers, release dates, blurbs and content. And the most important factor: I now sets the price points of my books.  Making the switch to self-publishing is giving me total control to make both myself and you, my readers very, very happy.

Now the answer to WHAT’S NEXT … The first book in my brand new Dare to Love series (also titled Dare to Love) is set to release on November 18th 2013.

Coming soon, you can pre-order DARE TO LOVE exclusively at iTunes. On the day of release, you can find the books on Amazon, Barnes and Noble and Kobo. In addition, the book will be available in paperback too! Of course I’ll send a newsletter, but be sure to follow me on social media (links below) in order to get the most up to date information as it happens! For my paperback readers: This bears repeating: YES these books will available in paperback as well as eBook!

A fun note about the story. In the past my books have been sweet and sexy contemporaries with a small town setting, but with Dare to Love I’m turning up the heat. The Dare to Love Series will be steamier, sexier and hotter than anything I’ve ever written. And I can not wait for you to read it!

Excerpt

I’m out of here. Today. Shanna grabbed her purse, threw a lightweight sweater over her shoulders, yanked Derek’s suitcase off the floor then left the room. She’d barely slept a wink all night. And spending the evening crouched in a corner, starving, scared half to death because she didn’t understand what was happening and wrapped in a blanket with her head covered wasn’t her idea of comfort. Sure, she enjoyed every moment of the sexual encounters, but realistically, that type of thing only happened on TV. Why had it happened to her?

She’d tried calling Adrienne at 2:00 a.m. to talk through the incidents but she couldn’t obtain any reception from inside the room. No cell phone, no ability to connect to the complimentary Wi-Fi, not even the landline worked, which had kicked the idea of room service to the curb. Talk about feeling entrapped and stranded.

When younger, she and Adrienne believed their house was haunted. Well, it was haunted. Shanna saw a ghost of an old woman to prove it. She’d even taken her claim to a psychic who said Shanna had the talent to communicate with spirits. Why in the world would she want to do that?

A talent? Really? It sounded more like an affliction.

Every noise she and Adrienne heard in the closets and every footstep thumping along the hardwood floor between their rooms, they’d attested to the predictable ghost. They’d even gone as far as setting tape recorders in their bedrooms to capture voices. They’d never caught any but the thrill was in trying. Then one morning before Shanna crawled out of bed to dress for school, the edge of her blanket lifted and a gnarled hand, like a demon claw, shot beneath the covers and grabbed her thigh. Terrified, she ran from the room screaming. Even though she’d showed her mom the scratches left on her leg, Mom tried convincing Shanna she’d done it to herself. That was the last time she’d mentioned ghosts and demons to her mother and she never again set a tape recorder inside her room.

Grandma, on the other hand, believed Shanna’s episode. Shortly after, she’d presented Shanna with the bracelet. Grandma said it would keep her safe because it’d been blessed with the greatest strengths of each zodiac sign. Although Shanna didn’t believe metal trinkets could play such an important role in her life because she felt no different whether it was on or off her wrist, she found comfort in Grandma’s gesture.

What would Adrienne say now if Shanna explained last night’s encounter with the supernatural? If Shanna had any self-respect left by the time she fled this place, she wouldn’t even mention it.

She slid her sunglasses from the top of her head to her nose to conceal the dark circles under her bloodshot eyeballs. Ugh. As if those weren’t bad enough, her entire genital area was swollen and tender.

Swearing on her life, she’d had sex with a huge cock. No, she hadn’t seen it, but she didn’t have to. She knew how a sound screwing felt. And just because she couldn’t see it didn’t mean it hadn’t happened. The fact was, she’d been wide awake. It wasn’t a dream or delirium from lack of nutrition. Nor had she fist-fucked herself. Seriously. To even suggest she’d do something so atrocious. And she knew she’d also been fucked on the bed moments prior to that incident. And she’d tried convincing herself she’d had a wet dream?

Brazen and Entangled Publishing has a seriously hot treat for readers … Crash Into Me by Tracy Wolff – I’ve got an excerpt AND a review.  Check it out below.

CiM_300Crash Into Me by Tracy Wolff

She’s totally off limits, but this rocker wants a taste…

Jamison Matthews has lusted after Ryder Montgomery since she was a preteen. But now that Ryder and her brother’s band, Shaken Dirty, has made it huge, she’s just one of many pining for the brooding lead singer. Too bad Ryder still sees her as a little sister. Not that it matters. Her brother would never allow it, and the last thing Jamison wants is to be another notch on a rock star’s bed post. Even if it’s Ryder’s.

Ryder doesn’t deserve happiness. After his fame destroyed his last girlfriend, he swore he’d never fall in love again. So when Jamison, the girl he’s been in danger of loving for years, joins the band on the road, he’ll do anything to deny the sparks between them—even after one hot night together. But Jamison is determined to show Ryder that he’s worthy of love—her love—and that she’s all grown up…and ready to play.

Excerpt CRASH INTO ME

Onstage, the band launched into “Awake,” one of the power ballads that had made them famous. The crowd screamed their approval and so did she. Totally not her typical modus operandi, but she couldn’t help it. Something about listening to Ryder croon the darkly haunting lyrics had her knees trembling and her heart beating much too quickly. If she closed her eyes, she could do what all the other women in the audience were doing and pretend that he was singing straight to her.

So much better than remembering he’d written these heartfelt words for another woman. For Carrie, who had killed herself and broken his heart so many years before. Her own heart ached at the thought. For him. Always for him. At twenty-nine, Ryder had already been through more darkness and despair than any one person should have to handle.

“Awake” finally came to a close, the last note hanging in the air for long, tension-fueled seconds. Then the band fell silent and the audience did the same, as if they were all holding their breaths. Ryder lowered his guitar, shuffled, and stamped his feet once, twice. It was a familiar gesture, one years of experience had taught her was his way of shaking off excess emotion. Again her heart twisted. It devastated her that more than ten years after the fact he was still eaten up by what had happened. Still determined to bury it under a bunch of layers that not only insulated him from his pain but also hid the real Ryder so deep inside the public Ryder that she wondered sometimes if he even existed anymore. Or if the boy who had held her while she cried, who had let her whisper her pre-adolescent fears without ever making fun of her, had disappeared forever.

She searched for him in that one endless moment.

Looked for him in the obsidian eyes that arrowed to the heart of the crowd even as they barricaded his own emotions.

Combed through her own memories and expectations in an effort to see Ryder as he really was instead of how he portrayed himself.

And when his eyes—his crazy, beautiful eyes—met hers, she found him. Seconds passed, long, intense seconds where she lost the ability to hear or breathe or even think. All she could do was look into Ryder’s eyes, at the feral heat boiling up and out of them, and want.

She smiled at him, waved. He snarled back. But it wasn’t a leave-me-alone snarl. No, definitely not. It was his I-want-to-fuck-you-up-against-a-wall snarl—she knew it well, had seen it directed at a lot of women through the years—and her knees gave way when she realized that this time, finally, it was directed at her. It didn’t matter that there was no sign of recognition in his eyes, no knowledge that the woman he was looking at like that was actually her. Jamison. For one moment, he wanted her the way she’d always wanted him.

It was more than enough.

*****

Review:

I think that Jamison is a good mix of several romance heroine types – she’s wants to act on a childhood crush, plus she’s crushing on someone famous that all women seem to want and he’s a bad boy on top o that.  It makes for a fun ride as she spends time with the band and the attraction between her and Ryder becomes more than they can ignore.  And oh boy, is Ryder ever sexy – he’s troubled and gorgeous and in need of someone to love him.  Sure, he’s made a family of sorts with the guys in the band but he’s living with a big load of guilt and esteem issues.  I know that realistically that these things don’t really work this way, but in my romance stories I think it’s sweet.

Although I do think that a few serious conversations should have been had about his past.  He spends most of the book completely avoiding discussing it, then suddenly he’s ready for a real relationship and all is OK.  I thoroughly enjoyed watching the two grow closer and the sex was definitely off the charts hot, but he held himself back for so long that the turning point felt a little anticlimactic.  I think a little more time should have been spent on his issues but overall I was seriously hooked on Wolff’s new series.  And the epilogue blatantly teases into the other band members’s stories – very intriguing teases that have me impatiently waiting to find out all the details.

Crash Into Me is a sexy and fun and full of rock & roll hotness.  If you like your heroes full of angst and muscles and tattoos and guilt and sex appeal, who find themselves falling for the sweet and sexy girl next door, then this is sure to be a winner.

Resolutions, Teri Riggs

Decadent Publishing has a hot new book they want to share with you ….

Resolutions200x300DEA agent Eve Taylor has had her fill of alpha males. When Resolutions’ operative and former lover, Dillon “Mac” McKenna, threatened her hard-earned independence, she ran. On a mission to gather evidence against a Colombian drug-lord, Eve discovers the drug-lord is helping terrorists plan an attack on American soil. Before she can escape with the vital information, she’s captured and comes face to face with her mortality…

As a teen, Mac watched his family fall apart after his mother died doing dangerous U.N. work. The possibility of losing Eve to a mission ignited an overwhelming need to protect her. When he forced her to choose him or her job, she walked away. Two years later, it seems all his nightmares have come true and he’s tasked with rescuing her from a Colombian prison. Mac has never stopped loving Eve, but does he dare risk his heart when he’s so terrified of losing…

On the run, Mac and Eve must learn to trust each other again in order to stay alive.

Excerpt:

Beefy hands wrenched Eve awake from a fevered sleep, pulled her from the cell, and shoved her into a musty-smelling hallway. I’m being moved? A guard pushed her with one hand, keeping a tight grip on an AK-47 rifle with his other.

Her shoulder throbbed in perfect cadence with the pains shooting through her broken wrist, and she had one badass headache from being punched in the face a few too many times. Using her good hand, she walked fingers across one cheek, then the other. The right side was totally numb. Her eye had swollen shut, and she couldn’t see a damn thing out of it. She ran her tongue across her teeth and tasted the tart, copper flavor of blood. Three teeth loose. Well, at least they’re still in place.

In spite of the relentless pain, she stayed determined to survive whatever Mendoza dished out. She wasn’t a quitter. No, sir. Duncan Falls, Iowa didn’t grow quitters. Eve ignored the constant ache in her ribs, courtesy of a guard’s overzealous kick, and took in a deep breath. She willed herself to stay alert, to keep pushing. Escape. Third times the charm.

Eve slapped the guard’s dirty hand. “Hey, Pedro, stop being so damned pushy. Where we going anyway? We got a hot date I’ve forgotten about?”

He looked puzzled then shoved her again.

“Don’t understand English, do you, Diego? Bet you understand this.” Eve drove her elbow into the guard’s face. Thick rubbery cartilage gave, and she whooped triumphantly.

Blood squirted from his nose and he screamed.

Eve stepped back. “Yep, I’m pretty sure you understand that.”

Unable to grab the guard’s assault rifle, she clutched her injured shoulder, and took off in a slow jog, no longer able to push any harder.

Her escape was short lived.

After the Kiss, Lauren Layne, Sex love & Stiletto series

After the Kiss Cover“AFTER THE KISS is a knock-your-stilettos-off, total page-turning treat that had me fan-girling up within the first chapter. I absolutely loved this read!”—USA Today bestselling author Mira Lyn Kelly

AFTER THE KISS: Sex, Love & Stiletto Series by Lauren Layne

A Loveswept Contemporary Romance

On sale August 26, 2013

ISBN: 978-0-345-54725-5

Book Blurb:

In the first book of a delightful new series from Lauren Layne, the star columnist of Stiletto magazine will do anything for a story. Anything . . . except fall in love.  Julie Greene loves flings. Loves steamy first dates, sizzling first kisses, and every now and then, that first sexy romp between the sheets. Comfy pants, sleepy Sundays, movie nights on the couch? Shudder. But when Julie gets assigned the hardest story of her career—a first-person account of that magical shift between dating and “I do”—she’ll need a man brave enough to give a total commitment-phobe a chance at more.

Normally, Mitchell Forbes would be exactly that man. A devastatingly hot workaholic who tends to stay in relationships for far too long, he should be the perfect subject for Julie’s “research.” But what Julie doesn’t know is that Mitchell is looking to cut loose for once in his life. And the leggy journalist notorious for avoiding love is exactly the type of no-strings fling he’s looking for. In other words, Mitchell is the polar opposite of what Julie needs right now. And, at the same time, he’s exactly what she wants.

Today’s we geLauren Layne Headshott a sneak peek at AFTER THE KISS, the first book in the Sex, Love and Stiletto series by Lauren Layne. Lauren graduated from Santa Clara University with B.S. in Political Science that she has yet to put to good use. After dabbling in an e-commerce career, she decided to quit talking about writing and actually do it.

A Seattle-native, Lauren’s also tried on the Bay Area, Orange County and Manhattan for size. She’s currently writing from the Pacific Northwest, but is always looking for the next place to call home. Texas? The South? New England? Suggestions welcome.

A taste of AFTER THE KISS…

A bored-looking bartender pushed glasses across the makeshift bar, and Mitchell resisted the urge to ask if he could get something stronger than watered-down whisky. As if reading Mitchell’s thought, the bartender dumped another scoopful of half-melted ice into the glasses.

Perfect. Just perfect.

Out of habit, Mitchell fished a five out of his wallet for a tip, then grabbed the two glasses. He handed one to his ever-jovial colleague, Colin.

Halfheartedly Mitchell clinked his glass against Colin’s. “Here’s to fucking fundraisers. And thanks, by the way. I owe you one for rescuing me.”

Colin Trainor took a sip of whisky and nodded in acknowledgment. “Just promise you’ll do the same for me someday. I’d rather listen to my aunt Yvonne discuss proper enema technique than get caught in a conversation with Allen Carsons. That man’s one Los Angeles bush away from becoming a stalkerish paparazzo. What did he want with you, anyway?”

Mitchell shrugged. “About what you’d expect. Details on my breakup with Evelyn.”

“Guess that’s what you get for dumping the daughter of our country’s most popular senator.”

“I didn’t dump Evelyn. We just went our separate ways.”

“Irreconcilable differences and all that?” Colin asked.

Extreme boredom, actually. “Something like that,” he replied noncommittally.  Mitchell wasn’t often inclined to spill his guts. Not to lowbrow reporters, and not to gossip-prone colleagues. Not that Colin was a bad guy. They were even friends of a sort.  But the occasional after-work beer didn’t exactly warrant personal confidences. At least not in Mitchell’s book.

Colin drained his whisky and frowned at the glass. “What was in this, whisky essence? And remind me again what we’re doing here. I don’t get art on the best of days, but this weird modern shit is over my head. I’ve taken dumps more attractive than some of these displays.”

Silently Mitchell agreed. He enjoyed museums. Even art museums. But MoMA in all of its sleek, modern splendor was his least favorite museum in the city. He’d take the quiet dignity of the Frick Collection on Fifty-Ninth Street over the flash of MoMA any day.

“At least this should fulfill our quota for the year,” Mitchell said.

Robert Newman, CEO of Newman and Chris, the firm where Colin and Mitchell were senior partners, insisted that the company have representation at all charitable functions for which Newman and Chris was a sponsor. Mitchell had chosen tonight as his contribution only because the Yankees had a travel day. And because he could get behind educational charity more than some of the fluffier causes Robert supported.

“At least there’s some decent tail here,” Colin said, his eyes on the backside of a woman who couldn’t possibly have graduated from college yet.

“Tail? What is this, a dockside brothel?”

“Spoken like a man who’s been in a relationship since his balls dropped.”

“Hyperbole doesn’t suit you.”

Colin signaled the bartender for two more drinks. “Seriously, man, when was the last time you dated a girl just for the fun of it?”

“Evelyn and I had fun.” Sort of.

Colin snorted. “Yeah, I’m sure sipping Dom on her father’s yacht with your sweater tied around your shoulders was a real hoot.”

Just two months ago Colin’s barbs would have rolled off Mitchell. He refused to be ashamed for conducting himself with dignity. He hadn’t indulged in drunken one-night stands in college, and he wasn’t about to start now, at age thirty-four.

But two months ago Mitchell had been secure in the knowledge that his future was figured out. He’d propose to Evelyn, have a respectable-length engagement, get married at the Plaza, and start a family within a year of exchanging vows.

He’d gotten as far as the jewelry store. He’d even carried the two-carat princess-cut engagement ring in his pocket for two weeks.

And then he’d ended it. On a whim. Perhaps the first whim of his adult life.  Evelyn hadn’t seen it coming. And the hell of it was, neither had Mitchell.

One minute he was trying to decide whether to play it old-school and kneel or stay sitting and save himself the dry-cleaning bill for dirty slacks. The next minute he was sitting alone at the table, having just told Evelyn that she deserved something better than a husband who’d spend his life going through the motions instead of cherishing her.

Cherishing her. He winced as the thought went through his mind. Good God.  Maybe he should just chuck the New York Stock Exchange and go write romance novels.

Mitchell heard his name and realized that Colin was still babbling at him.

“Tell me, honestly, man, have you ever had a fling?” Colin asked. “A one-night stand? Anything?”

Mitchell scowled and checked his watch. “What’s with the interrogation about my love life? Last time I checked, I wasn’t paying you for therapy.”

“Maybe you should. You need to get laid.”

Probably. Definitely.

“Well, I’ll let you know when I meet a suitable woman.”

Colin shook his head. “See, that’s exactly what I’m talking about. You analyze every woman as a candidate for the position of Mrs. Forbes. Have you ever touched a woman without first checking her pedigree?”

“Yes. I actually prefer a more spontaneous approach to relationships,” Mitchell lied baldly. “The chemistry has to be there, absolutely.”

Not. Chemistry was for chumps. Chemistry was what led to waking up in someone else’s dirty sheets, hep C, and eventual absence of a prenup.

But the fact that a buffoon as dense and clueless as Colin could read him like a book was galling. Being predictable was fine. Being predictably boring was not.

However, Colin was proving to be more aware than Mitchell gave him credit for. “Dude, you don’t give a crap about chemistry. If you did, you wouldn’t have dated Evelyn for two and a half years. The moldy onion in my refrigerator has more personality than that broad.”

Mitchell took a drink. “Evelyn’s a lovely woman. She’d make an excellent wife.”  For someone.

Colin pounced. “That. That is why you’re so grumpy all the time. You approach women the way you do a new suit.”

“That’s ridiculous.” I have plenty of suits. “And what exactly are you getting at?  One-night stands are for frat boys and desperate losers.”

“Who said anything about a one-night stand? Not that one would kill you, but I’m talking about a fling. Hook up with a woman who’s fun. Go on a few dates, have hot sex, and then part ways before you drag her home to meet your mother.”

Mitchell tried to wrap his brain around Colin’s suggestion and failed. What was the point of doing all that if it wasn’t going anywhere? If he wanted to start a family before his hair went completely gray, he didn’t have time for flings.

But he didn’t like the way Colin was shaking his head in dismay. As though he thought Mitchell couldn’t do it.

“I’ve had plenty of flings,” Mitchell lied again.

“Yeah, I can tell by the way the word just rolls off your tongue and you look ready to vomit.”

Mitchell’s strained patience snapped. This was a waste of time. “I’m heading out,” he said, setting his drink on the bar with a clink. “Go find someone else to annoy.”

He was starting to walk away when Colin’s laughing voice called after him, “Five hundred bucks says you can’t do it.”

Mitchell slowed and turned back toward Colin. “Can’t do what?”

“Can’t start seeing a woman without getting halfway to the altar. Can’t use a woman for sex and companionship and then set her free before you start talking about babies and moving across the river to Jersey.”

“You want me to make a bet that I can use a woman? Do I look like I left my morals at the door?”

Colin snagged a mushroom crostini off a passing tray and munched thoughtfully.

“It’s like I thought. You can’t do it.”

“I can. I just don’t need your five hundred bucks.”

“Fine, let’s sweeten the pot. Half of next year’s season tickets.”

Mitchell froze.

Of course, he already had season tickets to the Yankees. Not that he ever got to use them.

But his seats on the first-base line weren’t like the seats Colin had. At work Colin might be as useful as a third nipple, but his cousin was tied up somehow with Yankee business. As a result, Colin always had access to tickets for seats that you couldn’t buy your way into.

It was appallingly tempting to take the bet. Do not do this, Forbes. Do not sacrifice your dignity for the sake of a baseball team.

And yet Mitchell stood frozen. Because the truth was, he wanted more than the tickets. Mitchell needed to know that Colin was wrong. That he was capable of a spontaneous fling.

That he wasn’t turning into his father, stuck on a one-way street toward a McMansion in a gated community in the Connecticut suburbs just because it was expected.

I have received ARCs of books free from NetGalley (and many moons ago from BookTrib.com) to review but the majority of the stories are either bought by me or provided for free from the publisher, author, or PR company. The opinions I share are my own and in no way are influenced by an author or publisher. There is no promise of a positive review by any party and there is no additional compensation.
