Cinderella Screwed Me Over, Cindi Madsen

Today I have the pleasure of having author Cindi Madsen stop by for a guest post and a look at her new book, Cinderella Screwed Me Over.  I’ve read a couple of Cindi’s books (Falling For Her Fiancé and Act Like You Love Me) and thoroughly enjoyed them so I’m really looking forward to this one. Check it all out below.

*****

Why I write romance

I’ve never considered myself a romantic type of person. (You can ask my husband, I’m really not.) But there’s something about watching two people fall in love, whether it’s onscreen, or in the pages of a novel, that I find incredibly addictive. I love the butterflies, and seeing the characters’ change what they want because what they want is the other person. Plus, there’s kissing! Nothing’s better than a perfect first kiss. Of course awkward ones can be pretty funny, too. When it comes to romance, there are a few authors who’ve inspired me.

Charlotte Bronte. Because Jane Eyre! I’ve probably mentioned this novel many times in guest posts. It’s one of my all-time favorite love stories. Two people with rough pasts, who get each other and find love, even though neither one of them is perfect? I love that kind of story! And this one’s such a beautiful one.

Sophie Kinsella is another one of my favorite authors. Funny plus swoony is a read I can always get down with. Those kinds of books are my go-to comfort reads.

Elizabeth George Speare wrote the novel that I’ve read the most times in my life. In high school, I mostly read serial killer novels because I wanted to solve the mystery. But when my mom gave me the Witch of Blackbird Pond, there was something about it that pulled me in. It made me want to learn more about the Salem Witch Trials, and I also wanted a sailor like Nat to come to my town. I’m still a little disappointed he didn’t. Lol.

Another series I’ve mentioned several times is Anne of Green Gables. I actually read this back in elementary school, and there was always something about Gilbert Blythe. Every few years I like to re-watch the movies and remember that first time Gil called Anne carrots.

There’ve been a lot of other great romance writers who’ve influenced me, from classic, to contemporary, to YA. I have fabulous writer friends who always inspire me, and I get to critique writers who aren’t even published, but make me feel the love every time I read them. Basically, give me great characters who fall in love, and I’ll fall in love right along with them. As I’m writing, that’s what I’m hoping to do with my characters, so that when my readers close the book, they’re smiling and sighing and feeling the tingly happiness of love. Because everyone could use a little more happily ever after in their life.

Cinderella Screwed Me Over

by Cindi Madsen

Finding the one has never been so fun frustrating.

Cinderella Screwed Me Over-500Blurb:

Darby Quinn has a bone to pick with Cinderella. Burned one too many times by ex-boyfriends, Darby has lost all belief in the happily-ever-after that the fairy-tale princess promised her. She’s sworn off love, Prince Charmings, and happy endings and she’s happy about it. Really. Or at least she was…until she met Jake, her gorgeous neighbor and the manager of her favorite restaurant. But Darby has rules about dating, ones she’s culled from her years spent with so-called “princes,” and starting something with Jake would break all of them.

Charming, fun, and unwilling to give up on her, Jake doesn’t fit any of the profiles Darby has created from her case studies of ex-princes-gone-bad. Finally presented with her own Prince Charming, can Darby take a chance on a happily-ever-after?

Full of wit and sarcastic humor, Cinderella Screwed Me Over proves that sometimes the perfect love, like a perfect pair of shoes, is just within your grasp.

*****

Excerpt:

I stepped off the treadmill, thinking about all I had to do that day. And came face-to-face with Jake.

“I thought that was you,” he said.

I tugged the earphones out of my ears and blinked, hardly able to believe my eyes. He was wearing long mesh shorts and a T-shirt that stretched tight across his well-defined chest.

Last night after my date, when I’d had trouble falling asleep, I’d thought of all the things I should say to him the next time we ran into each other. But they’d abandoned me somewhere around the time I’d checked out his pecs.

“W-what are you doing here?” Smooth, Darby. Real smooth.

“Same thing as you,” he said. “Going for a run.”

I really wished I wasn’t so sweaty. My face was probably all red, too. “But… You don’t live here? In this building?”

One corner of Jake’s mouth twisted up. “It would be kind of strange for me to go running here if I didn’t live here.”

Heat filled my cheeks and I took another swig from my water bottle. Time for the apology. Then maybe I could stop feeling so guilty and get this guy off my mind. “Look, I’m sorry about the misunderstanding at the restaurant. I just thought you were one of those guys who tells everyone he owns the restaurant or runs the company or whatever to seem impressive. I thought that since I knew everyone, you were lying to try to impress me.”

There. I’d apologized. Now I could move past this guy and get back to my normal life.

“I was trying to impress you, but not with my job.” He tucked his thumbs into the

pockets of his shorts and shrugged. “I guess I need to work on my skills, because obviously my natural rugged charm wasn’t enough.” He flashed me a smile to punctuate his statement and I tried—and failed—not to let it melt me the tiniest bit.

“Oh, you were plenty charming. Just not enough to make up for being a liar. Which for all I know, you’re not, so again, sorry.”

“Do you always assume the worst in people?”

I crossed my arms. “Yes. That way I’m never disappointed. It saves a lot of time and trouble.”

His eyebrows shot up and his smile faded. It only lasted a moment, then the smile returned. “I guess there’s only one thing to do about that. Let’s go to dinner, and I’ll prove to you I’m not a liar.”

Is he seriously asking me out right now, while I’m all sweaty and makeup free? My gaze accidentally drifted to his toned chest and arms. My pulse quickened and the temperature in the room climbed even higher. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t tempted.

I swallowed, forcing from my mind thoughts of how good he’d look shirtless, and reminding myself of the rules that had kept me heartbreak-free for a year. Guys like Nick, they were safe. The guy standing in front of me was the total opposite. “Sorry, but you’ve got two strikes against you already. You work at my favorite restaurant, and you live in my building. That’s just asking for trouble.”

Jake took a step closer. “Or maybe it’ll be convenient.”

“A girl does like to be called convenient.” My voice shook a little, thanks to his proximity. He was tall, too—in my sneakers, I barely came to his shoulder, which meant he’d still have a few inches on me in my highest heels. Forcing as much indifference into my expression as I could manage, I glanced at my watch. “I’ve got to go get some work done.”

Jake reached out and put his hand on my hip, just like he’d done the other night. My skin heated under his touch and my breath caught in my throat. Part of me was screaming, Just go for it, and the other part was yelling, Mayday, mayday, we’re going down!

“Just so you know,” he said, leaning close enough his chest bumped my arm, “I’m an expert on baseball, and two strikes isn’t enough to get out. You need three.”

I stared up into those startling blue eyes of his, and worked at keeping my voice steady. “I’m sure the third will come up soon.”

The wattage on his smile kicked up a couple extra notches. “I’ll see you around, Darby.”

About the Author:

Cindi Madsen sits at her computer every chance she gets, plotting, revising, and falling in love with her characters. Sometimes it makes her a crazy person. Without it, she’d be even crazier. She has way too many shoes, but can always find a reason to buy a new pretty pair, especially if they’re sparkly, colorful, or super tall. She loves music, dancing, and wishes summer lasted all year long. She lives in Colorado (where summer is most definitely NOT all year long) with her husband and three children. She is the author of YA books All the Broken Pieces, Cipher, and Demons of the Sun and adult romances Falling for Her Fiancé, Act Like You Love Me, and Cinderella Screwed Me Over.

*****

In the time of Tudor rule, when the land grew untamed and the men fought fiercely, the HIGHLAND HEARTS trilogy follows Scottish warriors of the Macbain and Munro clans on their quests for justice and survival. This historical, paranormal romance series sweeps from the raw grandeur of the Highlands to the opulence of King Henry’s court, where bold strategies, royal intrigue, and murder twist together with white magic as these warriors become entangled with three English lasses from very different lives. With secrets exposed and distrust shadowing their happiness, can they conquer the darkness to win the purest form of magic that exists – love?

In total, the HIGHLAND HEARTS series includes three main, full-length novels, CAPTURED HEART, TANGLED HEARTS, and CRIMSON HEART. A very short novella (13K words), HIGHLAND HEART (missing the all-important “s” at the end) is a prequel to the series, revealing how the first dragonfly-magic came to the western Highlands. UNTAMED HEARTS is a long novella (40K words) which bridges the gap between TANLGED HEARTS and CRIMSON HEART. Although each title is written to stand alone, reading them in the following, chronological order will enhance one’s immersion into this 16th-century world of adventure, love, and magic.

HIGHLAND HEART (short novella)

CAPTURED HEART – Book 1

TANGLED HEARTS – Book 2

UNTAMED HEARTS – (long novella)

ISBN: 9781616502874

Release date: Feb. 3, 2014

Series: Triple Star Ranch, #1

Blurb:

Where there’s smoke, there’s fire…and passion that won’t be denied.

The child of a gypsy and fey, small-town veterinarian Dr. Anastasia Brannon has always hidden her magic for fear of ridicule. A red-hot encounter with the new PI in town makes their attraction impossible to deny. Throwing caution to the wind, she indulges her desires but keeps her secrets close.

A man with a shady past and secrets of his own, Howl Raven uses his feral talents and tracking skills to make a living, doing his best to lay low and hide the curse that haunts him every month. When she finds the enigmatic investigator wounded in the woods near her cabin during a storm, Ana provides medical care on instinct. She may be the only one who can banish the wolf from Howl’s blood, but at what cost?

*****

Excerpt:

Stop thinking about sex, Ana. Control yourself.

Howl swallowed the pills with the hot coffee burning a path down his raw throat and hoped it hid his grin.

Arrgh. He probably heard that too.

“Every word. We’ll get to that, hopefully sooner rather than later.”

“You’re evading the question. So, how did you come to be bleeding in my woods not twenty feet from my doorstep?”

“My woods. I’m renting the Parker place, remember? Technically, that makes Parker’s woods, my woods,” he corrected.

She turned her back on him to retrieve something from the cabinet. Had it only been yesterday they had shared lunch in this room? She had been molten in his arms, melting into his kiss. If not for the phone call from Jace, they would have ended up in bed. Maybe on the couch. Against the wall. Now who couldn’t control their thoughts? Where had this distance come from?

“That’s not what I meant and you know it.”

“I know.” He slipped in behind her at the counter. He had questions. She had answers. Howl intended to have them and her. “Why didn’t you call for help?” Howl laughed when he felt her jump mentally. Mind reading was such a trip. He effectively caged her between the counter and his arms. He wanted to kiss her, just there where her neck curved into her shoulder. He nuzzled the spot and traced the tip of his tongue along the exposed skin of her throat.

She tilted her head to give him better access. “The storm knocked down lines everywhere. We’re running off generator power, no phone, and no cell.”

He felt her shiver as her situation started to dawn on her. They were completely alone. Nothing to stop them from acting on this all-consuming lust. No calls from Jace. No neighborly driveby visits from Cade. No work. Just walls, rooms, and plenty of doors with locks.

“I would have driven you to the hospital once the storm let up and you were stable, but you asked me not to. That, and my Jeep was totaled by a tree. Then I found this.” Ana held up the small jar containing the bullet she had removed. “And I knew I couldn’t go to Cade. He wouldn’t understand.”

Howl took the jar. Even through the glass, the metal burned his skin. He tossed it aside. It rolled across the floor into the corner smacking into the baseboard but didn’t break.

“Thank you for that, for protecting me. You know what I am, then.” This time he did kiss her just behind her right ear.

“Yes.”

“And are you afraid of me?” Need beat a rhythm through his blood. Please say no. The hard planes of his body pressed against the silk of her back.

“Should I be?”

“I won’t hurt you.”

“How do you do this to me?”

Howl felt her frustration as she instinctively arched into him.

“What do I do to you?” He flipped open the buttons of her blouse.

“Make me ache for you.”

A feral urge consumed him with her whispered words, something animal, something that couldn’t be controlled. He kissed the nape of her neck, and felt her skin vibrate beneath his lips. He heard her shudder inwardly and beg her body to behave. “Oh, no you don’t. I want you out of control. You should have told me about your magic.” He breathed the word in her ear. She melted underneath his massaging fingers.

“And you could have mentioned you howl at the moon, before I had to use that magic to save your life.”

Chacelyn Pierce, The Christmas Key

Chacelyn Pierce was nice enough to give us a peek at her new book, The Christmas Key. Check it out below!

*****

thechristmaskeysmThe Christmas Key

by Chacelyn Pierce

Blurb:

Dumped before vacation, Shalaine Harper goes to Alaskan to drown out her sorrows on wine, watching Xander Christian films, and using a toasty fire to burn away the hurt. As one of Xander’s biggest fans, fate deals her a strange hand when the Hollywood star is blown in before a snow storm.

Xander Christian finds himself stuck in Alaska and the closest safe haven is a cabin occupied by a woman dealing with heartache. Since neither bear gifts, they’ll have to find other means for sharing the holiday spirit.

Excerpt:

Shalaine Harper swiveled in her office seat after making the last editorial note on the article she’d penned on the opening box-office hit, Tiding Sun. The A-list movie starred Xander Christian, the exotic Adonis who made any sane woman’s panties drop when he licked those kissable lips. He caused heart palpitations for the millions of horny women across the globe. Though his movies as of late hadn’t been his best work, she still gave him an A for effort.

Diehard fan that she was, Shalaine couldn’t help but give him high marks on her movie reviews. Even if they deserved a lower grade, she couldn’t bring herself to scribble anything lower than a B. Her eyes drifted to the hanging poster for Tiding Sun on her office wall. It was now her favorite face shot of Xander. His blue-green eyes captivated her first; they always did. It was no wonder teenage girls fantasized about him more than any famous teeny-bopper. Though she wasn’t a teenage girl, she couldn’t help but sigh like a lovesick puppy. Her mind recollected the steamy scene he’d had with Jess Gilmore in the hayloft. His raciest scene yet. The supporting actresses didn’t know how good they had it, to kiss X. Chris and taste his mouth. Heaven. That’s what it had to be like. Pure heaven. She tore her gaze way from the framed beauty and got back to work on making him look as good on paper as he did onscreen.

The Reviewer was a very prestigious magazine that focused on box-office hits and celebrities. They looked toward her to cover all X. Christian-related movie releases. Everyone in the office teased her and nicknamed her complimentary articles on him as Shalaine’s X. Chris or Double-X articles. Adding a few more raunchy words into her reviews would lead many women into an orgasmic state and mean a quick firing on her part. She was just a few words shy of making it a XXX feature worthy of Playgirl Magazine. Might be worth it though.

Running out of time, Shalaine. Get the article done.

She looked at a photo on her desk for inspiration. It was a sketchy shot of Nathan and her in Cozumel. There was lots of sizzling sex in the air that week and to date, it was the best time they’d ever had together. Three years had gone by fast and she expected Nathan to pop the question any day now. Maybe he’d do it when they arrived at the small rental cottage in Alaska. Shalaine enjoyed their vacations together; it was the only time they could be uninterrupted. Since they rarely got to spend time together, it was a set plan for them to have quality time a few times year. While in Alaska, neither of them would let work dictate their schedules and they could work on their relationship. She glanced at the clock. Three more hours and she’d leave New York for a full week. Overjoyed didn’t even cover it; she was stimulated.

Stimulated.

She jotted that word on a sticky note to fit into her article somewhere just as her office phone rang.

“Shalaine Harper,” she said wistfully, thinking of snow, cabin sex with Nathan, and fire cuddles. She could almost smell the woodsy scents and hear the wildlife.

“Hey, Shay, it’s me.” Nathan’s glum tone set off warning bells.

“What’s up?” She tried to convey her good mood to him over the phone.

Three hours, baby, don’t crumble on me now.

“I can’t go to Alaska.”

She lost her breath at his words. “What? Nathan, we’ve planned this trip for months! Go tell your boss to get over not seeing you for a week; it won’t kill him.” She threw her pen across the desk but reached for it again, needing something in her hand. He sighed and paused for a minute, leaving open air on both their lines.

“Non-refundable tickets, Nathan,” she reminded him.

“I know, I know. Let me rephrase then…I can’t go to Alaska with you.” He mumbled the last part as if he had to muster the strength to get the words out.

A lot of things filled Shalaine’s head at that very moment, none of them good, but in a small voice, all she could ask was, “Why?” “Because I can’t do this anymore!”

“Do what, Nathan?” She tried not to grit her teeth, a bad habit she’d been trying to break. “What are you talking about? You can’t do what?”

“Us! Seems like all you have time for is just our vacations. You’re either at a big movie premier in L.A, an interview in some exotic destination I’ll never see, or having drinks with movie stars. I can’t…I just can’t anymore. It’s not the same as it used to be, plus…plus, I’ve met someone else. I want to spend my Christmas with her.”

Xandra James has a fun new book … take a look below for Dirty Tricks.

*****

dirtytricks 453x680Dirty Tricks

by Xandra James

She wanted revenge. He wanted her.

Cat was desperate, but pretending to be a ghost to stop the renovation on the neighbouring manor house was a new low even for her. All she needed to do, though, was slow down the renovation and figure out a way to make the owner pay for stealing her family home years before. Simple.

Everything was perfect until a new guy arrived on site, turning her plans for revenge upside down, and her body to a puddle of lusty mush. But when she finds out the secret he’s been keeping, will their attraction be strong enough to hold them together? Or will family ties tear them apart?

Warning: This story contains a large orange cat called Elvis, a fake ghost called Cat, a sizzling hot romance, and may cause you to crack a smile.

XandraJamesPicAuthor Bio:

Multi-published author, Xandra James, has always wanted to write romance books. Even when she was sneaking peaks at the hot bits, too young to fully appreciate them, she dreamt of writing her own.

Now, older and wiser, she’s got the opportunity to project her slightly dark and wacky, British sense of humour onto others, whilst still writing the hot bits – bonus!

When not writing, Xandra is thinking of excuses as to why she shouldn’t be doing the housework, looking after a husband and cats that refuse to pick up after themselves and climbing the mountain in her house that’s affectionately called her tbr pile.

She currently holds the crown for Queen Procrastinator – something she’s very proud of – so you can usually find her online, somewhere, when she really should be writing.

Adventure…with a dash of romance

Excerpt:

Elvis, her cat, nuzzled her foot once more and sat staring at her expectantly. She reached over and stroked him, knowing exactly what he wanted. The cat, bless all his fifteen pounds, was a water critter. If she was in the bath, he wanted in. If he wasn’t such a scaredy cat and realised there was a world outside the back garden, he’d have loved the sea just a couple of hundred metres from the end of her long garden. Yesterday he’d already jumped in to the pool, swimming around the two foot deep plastic expanse.

“Come on, baby.” Her orange monster jumped into her arms and she gently placed him in the water. He was probably as hot as she was. She splashed water over him, enjoying his enthusiasm.

“You do realise there’s a giant hamster in your kiddie pool, right?” The voice startled her and she scrambled around to see a man, standing not a couple of metres behind her, next to her petunias, dressed in a suit. Then all hell broke loose.

Elvis didn’t like men’s voices. The beast jumped up, scrambling to climb the two foot tall wall of plastic, looking like a drowned rat with his long, wet fur clinging to his body and claws that would rival Wolverine’s.

She heard a rip and then she was in a rush of water sliding the couple of metres across her lawn and towards the feet of the newcomer. Cat finally stopped, her ass up in the air and her thick hair, unclipped and around her face.

Catherine sat motionless for a few seconds, not quite believing what had just happened. Elvis mewed at the backdoor to be let in, and a soft, deep laugh began behind her. Cat didn’t know whether to cry at losing her pool, or come out swinging when she listened to that sexy sound coming from the mystery stranger standing above her.

Collecting herself and adjusting the strap to her too tight swim suit, she sat up and turned, staring at the stranger who was now belly laughing at her, his hands braced against his thighs.

Temper rising, she impatiently waited until the laughter subsided. Cat pushed her hair back from her face and adjusted her skewy sunglasses until she could actually see properly. Ignoring the fact he was a blond God, she narrowed her eyes. “Just who the hell are you, and what the hell are you doing in my garden?”

His grin widened and Cat told herself not to be distracted by the very attractive laughter lines around his eyes. “I’m visiting next door.”

That calmed her anger down a little. She looked at him with more curiosity now. “Do you work for Marshall Senior?”

He considered her for a second before answering. “I’m here to try and get the house completed on time and on budget.”

“Well, I guess you’ve heard all the rumours about the house?” Cat said it conversationally, trying to gauge exactly what this guy knew and how she could play on it.

“Ghostly happenings, you mean?” His smile didn’t quite meet his eyes now and Cat felt completely exposed as his gaze travelled down the length of her, still sitting on the floor. “I can assure you, Miss—?”

“Wakely. Catherine Wakely.”

“Miss Wakely, I intend to get to the bottom of whoever is trying to discourage the build.” His blue eyes sparkled as he stared her down and Cat could’ve sworn he already knew the cause of all the mischief, despite her being a careful saboteur. His eyes narrowed a little as their gazes locked and held for a few moments. He wasn’t buying in to all the spooky stuff, apparently.

Well, she might have embarrassed herself in front of him, but the war wasn’t lost just yet.

“There’ve been sightings of a woman in white over at the manor for years. But if you’re convinced you can get to the bottom of it, good luck, Mr—?” Cat made sure to stick her nose up in the air, despite her disadvantaged state.

“Just call me Jay. And I think I can handle the woman in white—whoever she may be.”

“Well, good luck, Jay. I think you’re going to need it.” Cat climbed to her feet, slipping slightly on the sodden grass. His hand reached for her but she dodged it, straightening herself on her own. “Now if you’ll excuse me?” She walked tall towards her house, well aware that her new sexy enemy was watching her every move and was probably seeing her old swimming costume ride high into her curvy backside, too.

“Come along, Elvis,” she whispered as she bent to pick up the soaked animal. “We need to up our game, don’t you think? The mean man doesn’t know what’s gonna hit him, does he, baby?” The animal gave a short, sharp meow in response and she bent to kiss his bedraggled head.

“You need to keep that cat under control. He’s a menace to polite society.” Catherine wanted to ignore his taunt as she opened the back door, stepped inside and almost slipped on the kitchen tiled floor, but she couldn’t.

“Piss off out of my garden!” Cat shouted back at him before she slammed the door, putting the cat down on the cool tiles.

Oh, she was going to enjoy tormenting him. And Cat was going to take a whole lot of pleasure in doing so.

Excerpt:

Sleep eluded Blade.

He would have thought the opposite should be true, considering this was the first time in years he had approached it without pain. Perhaps it was because he was alone in Ruby’s bed.

Each of the women who lived at the saloon had two attached rooms at their disposal. One, they used for working. The other was private. When Blade shared Ruby’s bed, he stayed in her private room. He punched a pillow to distribute the feathers more evenly.

He did not know what to make of the half-demon. Airie, he corrected his thought. Or her relationship with Hunter. He pitied his friend though, and envied him, too. Not because of her looks, which were stunning enough, but for the way she seemed to occupy Hunter’s thoughts so completely. He could not remember Hunter ever allowing a woman to distract him before. The fact that she had done so told Blade far more about her character than her healing of his leg.

Hunter’s hatred of demons, however, ran far deeper than Blade’s. He did not know what had happened in Hunter’s past to make this a truth, but he did know that Airie was going to have a difficult time getting beyond it, assuming she’d want to try.

He stretched out on his back beneath Ruby’s plain cotton sheets. Faint light trickled through the drawn muslin curtains, but he could see the contents of the room clear enough. A small writing desk with a ruffle-skirted chair, a chaise longue adorned in many multi-colored silk cushions, delicate oil paintings on the walls he suspected she’d created herself in another lifetime. She was feminine but practical. He rested the back of his head on his bent arm and stared upward at nothing in particular.

Now that he had a life to offer her, he was going to ask her to marry him. They had been friends a long time. Together, they would run the saloon. They would offer a haven to more women who needed one. And now that he could protect them properly, the women would not have to work on their backs unless they wanted to—which, Ruby assured him, some of them did.

Airie had given him back so much more than the use of his leg.

It was early yet. In another hour, the women would rise and head to the kitchen to prepare for the day. The majority of the saloon’s business tended to happen in the late afternoon and early evening because Blade did not encourage the rougher, late night crowd. The potential for roaming demons proved another deterrent to customers.

He rolled from the bed, drew on his trousers, and took the back stairs to the kitchen where he knew Ruby would have taken the little boy so she could work.

The scene he walked in on was what he had expected. Ruby stood at the stove, her hair caught back with a scarf and her face shiny from the heat, while Scratch—Hunter needed to do something about a real name for the boy—sat on the floor near her feet. She had given him a pot and spoon to play with.

Scratch smiled up at him, and Blade’s heart caught. He wondered what a child of his own might look like. She glanced up from the stove. Her eyes darted to his leg, then away, as if she didn’t want to be caught staring.

As far as Blade was concerned, she could stare all she liked. She had seen him at his absolute worst. Now she could see him for the whole man he had once been, although he hoped he had grown better than that over the years.

He was not proud of his past. Before he asked her to marry him, he planned to tell her about it. He cleared his throat, nervous now, and she stiffened as if she knew he was about to say things she didn’t want to hear.

“I was an assassin before you met me,” Blade said to her back.

Some of the stiffness went out of her spine. Her tone, when she replied, was neutral. “That’s not a surprise.”

Of course it wasn’t. She’d seen him practice with his knives. She knew he’d murdered the woman Mamna had condemned. What she did not know was how he had become one.

“I killed my uncle when I was fourteen.” That earned him a bit more of her attention. “He raised me after my parents died. I hated the bastard. He beat me and made me work in the mines like a slave. There wasn’t a bit of kindness in him.”

“Then it sounds as if he deserved it.”

Blade had always thought so. The rest of the community, however, had not shared his belief. The mining tunnels his uncle owned had collapsed shortly after, leaving them unworkable, and he had been blamed for the bad luck.

“My uncle was a leader of the Godseekers. He had been one of the goddesses’ favored, and according to local legend, chosen by them to become the Demon Slayer. I had no choice after I killed him as to what I’d become. Only the lawless would do business with me.”

For the first few years he had not asked questions regarding who they contracted him to kill. Women and children had been among their numbers, although very rare and speedily done. As time went on and his skills improved, he had become more select. But when he’d tried to cross the desert on his own, his lost battle with a demon meant he again had no choice with regard to his future.

Until he met Hunter, and then Ruby, he had made very few choices of his own other than that initial decision to kill his uncle.

He did not regret that one.

When he finished talking, and laying out the bare facts, he waited a long time for any response. She continued to stir the pot on the stove, a frown on her face, and beckoned for him to remove the fresh bread from the oven. Above them, he could hear the other women starting their day.

She banged the spoon on the edge of the pot before setting it on the counter and turning to face him. “Does Hunter know you were once a Godseeker?”

“I was never a Godseeker.” He had never admired them or followed their beliefs. “But Hunter knows I was from the north. He knows I killed my uncle.” He gave her a half-hearted grin. “Apparently I babble when I’m feverish.”

“You do.”

Blade did not ask what he had babbled to her about. Her manner suggested he might not want to hear it. “He knows the Godseekers are trying to kill him. He doesn’t know my uncle was predicted to become the Demon Slayer because that no longer matters. Hunter is the far better choice.”

“Your uncle was chosen by the goddesses,” Ruby said.

Blade could not hide his distaste. “That was what he would have people believe. He was a handsome man, who was nothing more than one of their pleasurable toys, although so arrogant he couldn’t see the truth of that. He could as easily have made up the story to give himself greater importance than he deserved.”

“Is it true that a goddess will lead the Slayer against the demons?” she persisted.

He shifted his weight, forgetting his leg no longer needed to be favored, and straightened. He felt as if he had grown several inches taller overnight, and his back was stiff from the change in his posture. “You can’t believe stories that are told second hand.”

She watched him with thoughtful eyes as he stretched his back muscles. “What if Airie is that goddess?”

“She’s not.”

“She healed your leg,” Ruby said.

“That doesn’t make her one of them.” He exhaled. “I grew up on stories of the goddesses. I remember their visits to the northern mountains from when I was a child. They were never what the world would have you believe. Call them goddesses and demons if you like, but in the end they are all immortals, one and the same.” He heard doors opening and closing upstairs and knew he had to hurry. “I have something I’ve wanted to ask you for a long time,” he began. He wouldn’t ask her now, not when privacy was no longer assured, but he’d give her an opportunity to think about it rather than spring it on her unannounced. “Perhaps tonight?”

Her smile became fixed and falsely bright. “We’ll see,” she said. “The last few days have been poor ones, moneywise. If business picks up, I may be working. If not, there’s a child in the house to consider.” She nodded at Scratch, who had been so silent he was next to invisible. Blade wondered that he had not stepped on him when taking the bread from the oven. “You should go back to bed for a few more hours,” she advised him. “There will be plenty of time for questions in the future.”

She did not want to talk. A sense of unease assailed him, but he let it go. “You’re probably right.”

He climbed the back stairs to her rooms. Instead of her private bedroom, he slipped into her working area.

She’d chosen red as a color scheme, an obvious play on her name. The room was decorated in satins and silks, with lush dressings hanging from the walls and varieties of intimate lace strategically spilling from open drawers. Beneath the king-sized bed she kept a box filled with what she referred to as the tools of the trade, but she had never offered to use them with him.

He sat gingerly on the edge of the bed, mentally comparing this room to the one he occasionally shared with her. He realized that he knew very little about either her or her background. In fact, she knew far more about him. He rubbed his leg out of long habit.

Ruby knew what he wanted to ask her. She was going to say no.

And he, fool that he was, was going to ask her anyway.

Final Scene

On the afternoon of the third day, Blade knocked on the door to Ruby’s private room.

“Come in.”

She sat in the chaise longue, surrounded by colorful cushions, a book upside down on her lap. She smiled, but it didn’t quite reach her eyes in the way it once had when she looked at him. She didn’t offer him a seat either, or ask what he wanted, with that little lift to her voice that told him he could have anything. Their relationship had changed, and he didn’t know why.

He did know. He simply could not believe that it mattered.

“Marry me,” he blurted out, and felt like a fool. This wasn’t how he had intended to ask her.

She carefully lifted the book, marked the page, and set it aside. Then, she sat up straight and looked at him. “Why?”

A wagon rolled by outside in the street, its wheels clattering noisily over the slickened ruts. Her response was not what he’d expected. Yes and no were straightforward answers. He hadn’t anticipated having to explain himself. He wasn’t certain he could. “I should have asked you a long time ago.”

“Why didn’t you, then?”

“I felt like half a man.” Ruby deserved the truth even though he didn’t like going down this road. “You deserved better.”

She studied him. “Maybe now I think you deserve better.”

A fine-edged knife of pain slid into his chest. “I’m not perfect.”

“Neither one of us is.” She patted the seat beside her. He sat, careful not to crush her skirt, feeling clumsy and awkward on the feminine piece of furniture. Her eyes had gotten suspiciously shiny. “When I first met you, you worked very hard to walk again,” she said.

The pain eased. “We can be married inside of a week.”

She took his hand, linking their fingers, and spoke with a gentle grace. “You aren’t that man anymore. But even then, you never worked hard enough to turn a relationship between us into anything more than friendship. I’m not sure why you should want to, now.”

“Why do women always have to think things to death?” Blade asked.

She laughed. “If we didn’t do the thinking, nobody would.”

“Marry me,” he repeated, more desperately this time, but she was shaking her head.

“I would never have said yes, even if you’d tried harder.” She took a deep breath. “I’m a whore. It hasn’t been a bad life. I have more independence than most women. But if I ever change my mind about marriage, it will be for someone who’s never known me as one.” She held up a hand when he would have interrupted her. “I’ll tell him. I’m not ashamed of it. What’s important is that if the time ever comes, this life will be in my past and it will never have been a part of his.”

“My timing was bad,” Blade said.

Ruby squeezed his fingers. “Terrible. But there was never going to be a good time, so it doesn’t matter.”

He’d known all along she’d say no. That was probably the real reason he’d never asked her before. But he should have, if only to show her that he cared.

But by asking her now, he’d freed them both to move on with their lives. He touched her face with the fingertips of his free hand, then kissed her, somewhat ashamed of the relief he felt. He got to his feet. His heart wasn’t unscathed, but he would survive. He knew she would, too.

“I would have made a good husband,” he said.

She clasped her hands in her lap, looking lovely in the light filtering through the muslin curtains.

“You will,” she assured him. “But not for me.”

He left, closing the door behind him.

When young widow Catherine Briton is washed ashore, the sole survivor of a violent shipwreck, all she wants is to go home to London. But injured as she is, she can’t escape when a shadowy stranger rescues her and takes her to his castle—where she’s healed with suspicious, almost magical speed.

The more time Catherine spends in the castle, the more her curiosity rises where her fiercely handsome new “master,” Gerard, is concerned. As she begins to investigate, though, her discoveries only bring more questions. It seems Gerard isn’t the only one on the island keeping secrets…

The small town is full of strange mysteries and townspeople who know more than they should about her. And when a hulking beast that stalks the nearby hills and valleys catches up to her, Catherine must figure out what’s going on before it’s too late.

Excerpt:

In this scene from Dark Angel, my heroine Catherine Briton, a former nurse who served in the Crimean Theater with Florence Nightingale, has just washed up on the shore of Ynys Nos, an island somewhere in the middle of the Irish Sea—or so she believes.

Twilight was bleeding into the darker black of night. Shouting in the distance made me turn my head. It pounded ruthlessly, bringing on an almost overwhelming nausea. Fighting it back, I blinked hard. A rush of wind rose above the sound of the waves and a shadow passed over me.

I tried to follow the shadow with my eyes. The mist parted, and for a moment, I saw something move along the edge of the shoreline: a sleek, powerful beast, its fur black as midnight, its pale gaze fixed on me, its enormous body swaying as it stalked closer.

Fear possessed me, made me dimwitted with terror.

My vision wavered again, and a dark form loomed over me. I tried to scream, certain the beast was about to lunge for me, but my lungs would not draw breath. I turned to face it, but the creature was gone. Instead, a man was there, reaching for me, his large hands clasping mine and pulling me just beyond the waterline and up onto the beach.

“I have you,” he shouted.

He hung over me, sheltering me from the biting wind. Intense eyes beneath a slash of dark brows stared down at me from a lean, striking face—a face hewn out of wilderness and shadows, more frightening than beautiful, and yet somehow both.

I closed my eyes.

It did not matter who he was. I was safe.

“How in bloody hell are you here?” The deep voice above me sounded utterly perplexed. “How the devil did you accomplish it?”

I coughed out more water and said the only thing that came to mind. “Please do not—swear at me, sir.” A spasm of pain seized me, and I flinched.

“Well,” said the bemused voice. “You’ve spirit, at least. Good. You will need it.”

My tenacious grip on consciousness loosened, and I fought to retain it. I looked up at him with a sense of urgency pushing me on. I had to warn him. “A wild animal…I think—it might attack…”

His unblinking gaze reminded me of the creature’s fixed stare. “There was no animal when I arrived. You must have imagined it in your distress.”

“But—”

“I must move you,” he said. “Be brave.”

He lifted me and I cried out, my side screaming in agony.

He shifted me in his arms, tucking my head beneath his chin, warming me with his body heat.

Memories assailed me of the captain’s terrified face, of the futile push of oars against a raging sea, of bodies tumbling past mine in the water, of someone reaching out, capturing my hands, dragging me to the surface—

I struggled to lift my head and battle back the darkness long enough to ask him about my fellow passengers. My throat was raw with the seawater I had swallowed. I forced my head up. “Did you…save the others?”

He paused in midstride, then resumed walking. I heard the great weariness in his voice when he spoke again.

“There are no others.”

TJ BennettAuthor bio:

TJ Bennett has been writing for publication since 2000, but she’s been interested in it a lot longer than that. It wasn’t the best of books that got her writing, however; it was the worst. After slamming one particularly awful novel against the wall and complaining to her husband, “I can do better than that,” he challenged her to “just do it.” That was all the encouragement she needed.Since then, TJ has placed in over a dozen literary contests, including the Pacific Northwest Writers Association’s mixed-genre contest, the Daphne du Maurier mystery contest, the Holt Medallion, the Book Buyers Best, and many others. In 2005, she received a nomination in RWA’s Golden Heart paranormal category for her novel, Dreamweaver. In 2006, The Justice Seeker, a paranormal romance about an alien cop, received first, second, and third place, respectively, in the three well-known and highly respected contests in which it was entered. Her first published novel,The Legacy, a historical romance set in Early Reformation Germany about the destructive nature of secrets, was released in April 2008 (Medallion Press). Her second, The Promise, a follow on to The Legacy, was released in May 2009.

TJ has been a judge for several contests, including the Golden Pen, the Emily, the Golden Heart, and the RITA, and she has led plotting and characterization workshops for several writers’ groups. She also served as the editor for the Los Angeles Romance Authors award-winning newsletter, The LARA Confidential, as well as contributing several articles.

Her varied background includes extensive travel in her youth as a military dependent in Europe; being president of her own consulting business for several years, where she used the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator to help CEOs and managers develop successful work teams; and working thirteen years as a civilian contract negotiator for the US Air Force, buying multi-million dollar satellite and weapons systems.

She returned to her first love of writing in 2000. Armed with a BA and an MA in English, she also taught college level English and edits dissertations and novels.

TJ knows a lot about the black moments of life, and uses that knowledge to enhance her writing. She believes that nothing is ever lost, and no painful experience is in vain: it’s all research.

Hunter's Moon, Lisa Kessler

It is my great pleasure today to host author Lisa Kessler as she talks a little about romance and that all important first kiss.

Make sure you check out the below for info on her book and a great giveaway she’s got for readers, plus a list of the other stops on her blog tour.

Enjoy!

Hello everyone –

I’m very excited to be on Romance Reads today!!!

What could be more romantic than that first kiss, right?  In my new release, Hunter’s Moon, my heroine had shot, tasered, and kidnapped the hero in the first book. The wolf inside of him recognized her as his mate the moment she head-butted him. Whoops! So you can probably guess their first kiss was not typical! 🙂

Needless to say, this enemies-to-lovers story is hot with passion and fueled with distrust. I thought I’d give you a sneak peek at the first kiss…

EXCERPT –

The wolf inside me growled, recognizing her as my mate and wanting more. Her lips were soft but not fragile. She was cautious but not resistant. Her body molded to mine. She returned my kiss, her lips parting, allowing me to taste her. I held her tighter, closer. God I couldn’t get close enough to this woman. Our tongues explored with an unspoken hunger, passion, need.

She spread her fingers wide against my chest, sliding her hand up until her fingertips brushed the skin along the base of my neck. Her touch sent lightning through my veins, my blood pumping until I was sure she could feel how much I wanted her.

And I didn’t care. She was my mate. Mine.

I claimed her lips over and over again, savoring the warmth of her mouth. She moaned into the kiss, and my gut tightened. I’d never wanted anyone like this before. Passion burned hot through my entire body as I crushed her against my chest, wishing we didn’t have clothes between us. My hand slid up her back, brushing over the bulge of her gun.

In an instant, reality slammed into me, and without any warning, Sasha broke the kiss and stepped back.

I raked my fingers through my hair, watching her, waiting. If she expected me to apologize she was going to be sorely disappointed.

I’d never be sorry for kissing her.

So what is your favorite moment of a paranormal romance? The first kiss, first eye contact, first reveal of their true identity, or?

Thanks for having me on the blog and I hope you all enjoy Hunter’s Moon!

Lisa
