Today’s post is going to be a fun one – we’ll start off with Cora Cade talking about the influence of music and we’ll take a look at her new book, Morning Light, which I’ve gotten a chance to read and enjoyed a lot.  I’ve included my review below too so check it out!

*****

Every moment in life has a soundtrack.  That first summer you had a license and your own car.  The summer my husband I bought our house.  The long nights I used to drive the four hours to and from our locations while we were dating long distance.  That first road trip with your best friend.

All of the very best (and not so great) moments of my life can be associated with a specific song, artist, or album.  And writing my first book was no exception.   So, because I believe in sharing the joys of musical inspiration, I put together a mix tape of music that represents my debut release MORNING LIGHT.  A story about a wounded  Army Ranger finding love with his little brother’s best friend can only be symbolized with the following:

  • I Will Wait-  Mumford & Sons
  • Anywhere Your Love Goes-  Joshua Radin
  • Kiss Me-  Ed Sheeran
  • Only Love-  Ben Howard
  • A Drop In The Ocean- Ron Pope
  • Count on Me-  Mat Kearney
  • Sitting, Waiting, Wishing- Jack Johnson
  • Love Don’t Die- The Fray
  • Ho Hey- The Lumineers
  • How Long Will I Love You- Ellie Goulding

Noah, our wounded Ranger, is perfectly summed up by Ed Sheeran’s  ‘Kiss Me’.  That song always makes me all swoony.   And our heroine Tennyson has been waiting for Noah for ten years.  While he was off being a war hero, she was waiting for him to come home.   And being that I’m a crazed Josh Radin fan, I knew his ‘Anywhere Your Love Goes’ was the perfect inspiration for Tenn.

While I was working on MORNING LIGHT Mumford & Sons released ‘I Will Wait’ ahead of their second album.  From that moment forward it was all I listened to while I finished up the book.  Suffice it to say I’m a super ridiculous Mumford fan, but that song is perfect for the overall inspiration of the book.

If you’d like to check out the entirety of the mix tape, you can listen to it on Spotify:  http://tinyurl.com/kfxrh3q

Moving down the stairs from the apartment to the pub below, Noah heard the distinct sound of someone cussing up a storm. He quickened his pace to reach the door separating his living space from his workspace and gently opened it.

There, standing on top of his immaculately gleaming mahogany bar, stood Tennyson Sharpe in her bare feet. All five feet two inches of her. She was on her tiptoes, reaching for one of the light fixtures with one hand and a light bulb in the other. The stretch caused her white, fitted tee to slide up her belly and expose a sliver of summer-tanned skin.

She stuck her tongue out at an angle—in concentration, he supposed. As she twisted the used bulb from the fixture, she uttered a soft, “Gotcha.” The final motion to remove the bulb caused her to dip forward on her toes and lifted her jean skirt higher, offering a delectable view of her plain white cotton panties.

Noah instantly hardened at the sight. He’d been in lust with this girl since she was sixteen to his nineteen, and after ten years apart he was finally home. And here she stood, flashing him the sexiest view he’d seen in years. He leaned against the doorframe and watched the scene unfold, never happier to have given her a key a few months back.

As she placed the fresh bulb in the fixture, she stretched again. Her whole body lengthened, straining to reach the fixture. She was all tan limbs and womanly curves. Her body was at enough of an angle that he could see her breasts tight against the fitted tee, but more importantly her cute behind as she placed both palms on the bar to hop down from her perch. As she braced herself she lifted her perky behind and flashed him.

The curve of her sex flashed before him as those white panties intimately hugged her. In a flash, both feet were planted on the floor and she was picking up the used bulb from the bar, then slipping her sandals back on. Time to turn around and head back upstairs before she caught him with a full-on erection and he embarrassed himself.

Noah eased the door shut and sprinted back up the stairs as quietly as he could, hoping to give himself a few moments to calm his erection before she unceremoniously showed up in his apartment for their breakfast plans.

He needed a cold shower before they left or he’d never survive the meal. He was going to have wet dreams about her white panties for weeks to come.

Stripping off his jeans and plain black tee, he dropped his clothes where he stood and snapped the bathroom door shut as his apartment door opened.

“Noah?” Tenn heard the shower start as she closed the door behind her. Well, that was unusual. Noah was nothing if not prompt. Ten years as an Army Ranger kind of beat that into you. She rapped on the bathroom door with a knuckle. “Hey, are you alive in there?”

“I’ll be out in minute. Got a late start to the morning. Give me five.”

She glanced down and saw a pile of clothes. Strange. Noah was also one of the neatest, cleanest people she’d ever known. His place was always immaculate, with nothing out of place. Let alone a pile of clothes tossed by the bathroom.

Now she was starting to sweat. Did he have a girl here? Had she interrupted the morning-after? Shit. That Amber bimbo had been making a play for Noah ever since he’d come home. And if she was in this apartment right now, Tenn was going to die of embarrassment. Right after she beat Noah to death.

They had plans. Even if they weren’t the romantic kind, they were definitely plans. They’d had Sunday breakfast as a standing date since his return from overseas. And he’d never had a woman here.

Who was she kidding? He had every right to get freaky with anyone he wanted. She was just the trusty sidekick, the platonic friend who was always there. Like a lapdog.

Picking up the clothes, she folded them and set them on the back of the couch a few feet away. The apartment was neat as a pin and pretty spacious, as far as it went. It was an open floor plan with only two separate rooms off the main living area, the master bedroom and the bathroom. Everything else was one large, airy space. From this angle she couldn’t see into the bedroom and was half-afraid to know if someone was still in his bed. Warming it for him, so to speak.

Deciding she needed to know, she took a step toward the bedroom after picking back up the stack of clothes she’d set down a moment before. It was a perfect excuse to check out the situation. His dirty clothes needed to be tossed into the hamper. Right.

She was about to fully push open the bedroom door when Noah yelled, “Hey, Tenn. I left my clothes out there. Could you grab them for me?”

And before she could whip around and not look guilty he popped his head out of the bathroom door. As she turned in his direction, she could only see a portion of his upper body, with the rippling muscle and just-now-fading tan from his time in Afghanistan, but it was enough to stop her dead in her tracks. The man was masculine perfection and her panties got a little wet looking at him.

“Oh, did you want these? Um, I was about to put them in your hamper.” Belatedly she whirled around and held up the clothes in question. “I thought they were dirty.”

For a moment he looked like he blushed. Really? “Sorry, I wanted to take a quick shower before we headed out and I tossed them on the floor in my rush.” He reached out a hand and beckoned her forward.

She was going to combust before she reached him. Not only was the man deliciously muscled, he still dripped from his shower. His dark hair, cut in a military-style buzz, glistened in the morning light. Eyes the color of the ocean on a sunny day, clear and crisp-blue, tracked her progress. She cleared the edge of the couch and his gaze skated down the length of her body, snagging on her legs before coming back to her face.

Once within reach of the bathroom door heat crept up her neck and face when she realized Noah stood naked on the other side of the door. His body was positioned so she could only see a naked hip and the curve of a well-defined ass, but it was obvious he hadn’t bothered wrapping a towel around his waist before popping his head out the door.

She dropped his clothes before he could get a grip on them and they fell to the floor with a soft impact. Unbelievably, as she bent to retrieve the clothing, her face flamed even hotter in embarrassment.

Review:

This is quite a steamy little story – at a little under 100 pages it packs a ton of heat in just a handful of pages.  Both Tenn and Noah are fun.  They have been held back by different fears but they are finally at their breaking point.  It’s a fast-paced read, erotic and emotion-packed, with a captivating storyline and terrific characters.

I think my only problem is that we didn’t get more of the interaction between them when Noah was away at war, so that we could have seen more of them falling in love.  Instead we get them at the point that they both have feelings but are unsure of the other and what it could do with their relationship with Chris, Noah’s brother.  It’s still a delightful story but I think that would have added that little extra zing.  As it stands, though, I whole-heartedly recommend it to anyone who wants to spend a few hours with some sizzle and romance.

A sensuous treat, bold in the bedroom and complicated out of it, Morning Light is an intriguing tale of two people who have to decide if the possibility of a future is enough to take on the risks of a relationship.  The best part is it is the first in a series and I definitely can’t wait for more.  Both Chris and Tenn’s friend, Molly, have a lot of promise.

I come by romance honestly, having spent several years writing adult romance and entering romance contests through Romance Writers of America–including finaling twice in the prestigious Golden Heart contest and winning once. But despite these and other contest wins, my first published novel came not in adult romance, but as a writer of YA historical fiction (you can read all about my Elizabethan spy girls stories, the Maids of Honor, here.)

Still, despite my love of Elizabethan spies, I could never quite give up those super Alpha contemporary romance heroes. So, in the summer of 2013, I decided to see if perhaps I might still have a romance or two up my sleeve.

I wrote a tale about a girl whose biggest high-school and college crush–a rock star–suddenly becomes her biggest client, only now she has to be professional and not betray the fact that she’s completely in love with the guy. It was a fun, sexy, romantic fantasy, and I suggested the idea to my agent… who asked what other ideas I had in addition to this story. Shortly after, the Rule Breakers series was born.

To separate these books from my historical work, I adopted the name Jennifer Chance. I am now pursuing my dreams (pretty much round the clock as it turns out) and am THRILLED to be able to have four e-books coming out in 2014 and early 2015, all with Random House LoveSwept’s New Adult romance line.

As to what will happen from here, who knows? But as long as there is a story to be written and an HEA to be had, I’ll be the one over in the corner, tapping away on my keyboard.

Excerpt:

Steve Gwynn, Wingman

“You look pretty grim.” A laughing, wry voice floated over her left shoulder. “Don’t worry about Harry. He gets better.”

Lacey blinked up to take in a tall, rangy guy with a wide smile and insanely curly long hair. Steve Gwynn, lead guitarist. “Thanks,” she said. “I know it’ll take a while for me to make any friends here. Probably right around the time we start to gel, the tour will be over.”

“I wouldn’t be so sure,” Steve said. “Living on the road, even if we’re not always on the bus—you’re going to spend a lot of intense time with these people. It sort of jacks up the ‘getting to know you’ process.”

“You’ve been with the band for a while?” she asked. She already knew the answer, but Steve wouldn’t realize that, and getting to know the closest guy that Dante had to a friend seemed like the smart thing to do.

“My whole life, it seems like sometimes. Not in a bad way,” he said hastily, waving off Lacey’s concerned look with a laugh. “Just—sometimes you just fit into a place, and you realize it’s where you need to be. And I do. I fit here.”

“Yeah,” Lacey said. She thought about the girls in the brownstone—she and Anna Richardson had been close enough friends in college, but it wasn’t until they’d both found themselves in Boston last summer that things had really clicked for them. A chance encounter with artist-on-the-rise Erin Connelly had led to a roof over their heads, which was where they’d met the fast-talking Dani Michaels. Within just a few weeks, the four of them had formed a pretty tight bond. Even Dani, who didn’t seem to connect easily, was now hanging around the brownstone more often whenever she wasn’t working as a bartender, pool hustler, or God only knew what else. “Hopefully things won’t get too crazy on this tour.”

Jen Frederick, Unraveled

This morning we’re going to welcome Jen Frederick as she talks about writing her newest book, Unraveled.  I think that it looks funny, sweet, and heartbreaking … and I’m betting it’s something you’ll like.

*****

UNRAVELED has some great banter between Sam and Gray as they get to know each other, and you also include some steamy scenes as well. Which are easier for you to write? Can you share a favorite scene from the book.

Both types of scenes have their own rhythm and require their own preparation but I think steamy love scenes are actually easier for me to write than good banter.

One of my favorite scenes is where Gray learns how to knit. It seemed crazy to have this big bad Marine take up knitting but it was so much fun to write and I thought it was the perfect scene for the story.

Here’s an excerpt from UNRAVELED that has Gray knitting:

I grilled myself a hamburger and washed it down with a bottle of Miller then took another bottle into my small living room. I flicked on the television to ESPN, picked up the instructional book I’d bought a week ago and the mess of yarn and needles. I was trying to knit the blue section of the flag with the white stars—the part that had stumped Sam—only doing it so that the stars were knitted into the pattern instead of added later. Intarsia was what Sam had called it. Fucking impossible is what it was.

I’d started and ripped out the section a thousand times. It’d taken me a week just to figure out the basic stitches and getting the tension right. I’d had to remind myself that I could do amazing things with weapons and tanks and even excelled at fine motor skill dexterity tasks but holding two needles in one hand while threading yarn in and out was about the most complicated fucking thing I’d ever had to do.

What I currently had going was a lumpy mess with loose stitches creating a misshapen thing that looked like a geometry test gone wrong. There were no right angles, only waves of misstitched edges. But at this point, I wasn’t ever going to finish if I started over so I just went forward. It’d be the ugliest part of the flag, but somehow I’d gotten it into my head that if I presented this to Sam, she’d fall on her knees in joy.

Genre: New Adult Romance

Blurb:

Twenty-five-year-old Sgt. Gray Phillips is at a crossroads in his life:  stay in the Marine Corps or get out and learn to be a civilian? He’s got forty-five days of leave to make up his mind but the people in his life aren’t making the decision any easier. His dad wants him to get out; his grandfather wants him to stay in. And his growing feelings for Sam Anderson are wreaking havoc with his heart…and his mind. He believes relationships get ruined when a Marine goes on deployment. So now he’s got an even harder decision to make: take a chance on Sam or leave love behind and give his all to the Marines.

Twenty-two year old Samantha Anderson lost her husband to an IED in Afghanistan just two months after their vows. Two years later, Sam is full of regrets—that she didn’t move with her husband to Alaska; that she allowed her friends to drift away; that she hasn’t taken many chances in life. Now, she’s met Gray and taking a risk on this Marine could be her one opportunity to feel alive and in love again. But how can she risk her heart on another military man who could share the same tragic fate as her husband?

Part 3

Willa’s gut twisted. The way he’d looked at her made her feel like a strumpet. It intensified the uneasy feeling which had lingered all evening. The curious glances from some guests, the whispers when she passed one group of matrons. Clearly, rumors of her ruination still circulated. One would think there’d be a new scandal for the ton to focus on by now.

Ignoring her discomfort, she slipped her arm through Flor’s. “Come now. I, for one, intend to enjoy this evening. It is my first Season in years.”

She surveyed the dancing couples and groups of people sitting or standing at the edges of the hall against crimson wallpaper and carved flattened columns which glimmered under immense two-tiered chandeliers. The chattering crowd grew louder and the air more still with each new arrival. Her sister Addie’s come-out ball was proving a great success. There was even talk the Regent himself might make an appearance.

It had been an age since she’d circulated among these people. At first, the threat of scandal had kept her family away after Willa’s first and only season. Then her father had fallen ill, lingering for months before succumbing, which led to another year of mourning and seclusion in the country.

“Willa,” Flor said as they made their way to the refreshment table. “Perhaps I shouldn’t mention this but—”

“Come now, you’ve never held your tongue before.” She squeezed her friend’s arm. “Surely you don’t mean to start now. I would be sorely disappointed if you did.”

Flor gave a grim smile of acknowledgement. “I don’t want to upset you, but you shouldn’t be taken by surprise.”

“Out with it then.”

“Augustus Manning is here.”

“Augustus?” A sharp pain knifed through her. She’d confided a bit about Augustus to her new friend. Not all of it, of course. She’d never tell anyone the entire truth. “How do you know?”

“I saw him with my own eyes just a few minutes ago. He was heading to the cards room.”

“How is that possible? He did not receive an invitation.”

Her Sister's Wedding, Jane Ainslie

This morning we’re going to take a few minutes to get to know Mandy Evans from Her Sister’s Wedding.  It looks quite yummy!

*****

How did you first meet your writer? I met Jane Ainslie in Paris. She was interested in some of my artwork at an exhibition the art school was having. We got on so well, we got talking, and that’s when I told her Jake and my story.

Did you ever think that your life would end up being in a book? No! I mean, I’m just an Aussie girl who’s following her dreams of becoming an artist, but I suppose that was part of the appeal of my story.

What are your favorite scenes in your book: the action, the dialog or the romance? I blush a little when I read the romantic scenes between Jake and myself, but Jane has caught the attraction between Jake and me perfectly. It was there, right from the moment Jake and I met.

What do you like to do when you are not being actively read somewhere? I am living in Paris at the moment, studying art, so the majority of my time is spent painting, but when I’m not doing that, I like to explore the city on foot with Jake.

Are you happy with the genre your writer has placed you in? Absolutely! Contemporary sweet romantic foodie fiction describes Jake and my story perfectly.

Do you like the way the book ended? I cry with happiness every time I read the last sentence.

What do you do for a living? I was a food journalist in Melbourne, Australia, and currently I am taking art classes in Paris.

What embarrasses you? I think I would have to say ‘who embarrasses you’, because my best friend Dario often makes me so embarrassed, I look like a beetroot.

What’s your favorite thing to do on a rainy Sunday? Brunch and Jake. Not necessarily in that order!

What sound or noise do you love? Jake’s key in the door.

What sound or noise do you hate? Jake’s key in the door when I have just tried to cook him something to eat and it has burnt on the stove.

What other profession would you like to try? Certainly not Jake’s profession! I’m a useless cook, unlike Jake, who is a celebrity chef.

What’s the worst/weirdest thing you did as a kid? I cut off one of my sister’s pigtails when we were little. I’m not sure she will ever let me forget it.

Excerpt:

“You have a bit of sauce on your mouth.” He reached out with his finger and traced it along her top lip, removing the imaginary sauce. Mandy shuddered as Jake took her face in his hands, turned it towards him, and kissed her. This time, the intensity of the kiss sent every nerve in her body into overdrive as the longing and desire fired throughout her. Jake moved his hand down her back, pulling her closer along the length of his body. She could feel his desire for her pressing against her, and she moaned as his tongue slid between her lips. Reaching up, she grabbed his hair, pulling him closer to her, while the intensity of the kiss stopped time in its tracks, but unfortunately, not the burner on the stove.

“Oh no, the sauce!” Jake broke away as they both turned to look at the saucepan. The sauce had black, burnt bits floating in it.

“That looks like something I would cook.” Mandy leaned against Jake, laughing. He reached over and switched off the burner.

“This is where a sieve and a kitchen out of view of your dining public comes in handy. Where were we?”

“I think you were going to lift me up onto the kitchen bench.” Mandy hopped up onto the bench top. “Then I was going to wrap my arms and legs around you and we were going to…”

Jake didn’t need any further instruction as he pulled Mandy to him once again, this time more gently. His tongue parted her lips, as they slowly, sensually explored each other. Jake’s hand slid to her breast, as she ran her hands down his back.

“This is giving me an appetite, and I’m not just talking about a semi-burnt sauce.”

“Maybe we should pace ourselves a little.” Mandy put her head on his chest. She could hear his heart hammering against his ribs “I’m just a little scared I’m going to end up like the sauce otherwise.”

“What, lumpy?”

“No, burnt around the edges. We are playing with fire.”

Jill Shalvis, Lucky Harbor series, Once in a Lifetime

Ya’ll, I am SUPER excited about this one.  I absolutely adore Jill Shalvis’s books, especially her “Lucky Harbor” series, and today we get to spend a little time with her as she answers a few questions about her newest, Once in a Lifetime.

*****

Q&A with Jill Shalvis

What scene did you have the most fun writing?

Oh I have quite a few from this book! When Aubrey throws her drink in Ben’s face, when she runs and hides out in an AA meeting and makes friends with the pastor, when Ben figures out she’s writing a list of people she’s wronged and he wonders that it’s not a lot longer than it is, when Aubrey gets a little tipsy and throws rocks at Ben’s window like a scene right out of the Say Anything movie …

Describe Aubrey a sentence

Aubrey: her heart’s in the right spot but she doesn’t like to lead with it, if that makes any sense.

Aubrey inherits a cat named Gus, who has quite the personality—was he inspired by a real life cat?

He was inspired by my own Satan—er, Sadie, who believes she is the queen of all humans.

Aubrey has some scandalous photos from her college days surface in her ex’s tell-all. Is there are anything from your past you wouldn’t want to see the light of day (but that you’re willing to share with us)?

Alpha Man has a photo on his phone that he snapped just as I was flipping him off. I’m not super proud of that moment, which of course is why he has it as my photo id when I call him…

What can your fans look forward to next in the Lucky Harbor series?

Next up is a Lucky Harbor trilogy for this coming summer and fall, It’s In His Kiss, He’s So Fine, and Once In A Million, the stories of the three sexy hot guys who run Lucky Harbor Charters.

Excerpt:

It was dark outside when she got back to the Book & Bean, and she stopped short just outside the door. She’d locked up when she left and turned off the lights.

But the door was unlocked now, and the lights on. She went still, then pulled out her phone and dialed 9-1-1. She didn’t hit send but kept her thumb hovered over call. Taking a step inside, she paused. “Hello?”

“Hey.”

The low, slightly rough voice wasn’t what had her heart pumping. That honor went to the fact that there was a man on a ladder in the back of her store.

Ben.

He was in jeans with a tool belt slung low on his hips, his t-shirt clinging to him. He seemed a little irritated, a little sweaty, and just looking at him Aubrey got a whole lot hot and bothered in places that had no business being hot and bothered by this man at all. “What are you doing in here?” she asked.

“I work here.”

“What are you talking about? Get out.”

“Sorry, Sunshine.” He wasn’t even looking at her, but using some sort of long, claw-like tool to pull down a ceiling tile above the wall she’d been working on. And his tool worked way better than hers.

His movements were agile and surprisingly graceful for a guy his size. Not that he was bulky in any way. Nope, that tall, built body was all lean, tough muscle, and it screamed power. And with each subtle movement, his body made it clear that it knew exactly what to do with all that power. “The owner of this building hired me,” he said. “Said you were making a mess of things because your pride was bigger than your wallet.”

This caught her completely off guard, both the insult and the information. “My uncle owns this building,” she said.

He smiled thinly. “Yep. Happy Birthday.”

“It’s not my birthday.”

“Then happy you’ve-got-a-great-uncle day.”

Excerpt:

Chapter One

Divine saw her latest customer out, surprised to note that there was no one outside her door waiting for a reading. It was the first time that day that there was no line outside her RV. A glance at her watch explained why– it was dinnertime. That was the only time she ever had a lull in customers. Right now the food stalls would have ridiculously long line as everyone at the fairgrounds converged on them in search of greasy treats to power the rest of the evening’s rides and fun. Which meant she had a few minutes to catch her breath and relax a bit.

She’d barely had the thought when she spotted a couple of women moving purposefully toward her trailer. After a brief hesitation, Divine quickly flipped the “Back in five minutes!” sign, let her screen door slide closed and descended the few steps to the ground. Ignoring the fact that the women were looking alarmed and rushing forward, she slipped around the side of her RV. Most customers would have stopped then, sagged with disappointment and waited, probably impatiently, but waited just the same, so Divine was a little surprised when her arm was grabbed from behind. She was more surprised, however, by the strength in the hand that latched onto her…until she turned and noted that it wasn’t one of the women at all, but a man.

A couple inches taller than her, dark haired and good-looking, he was built like a line backer. He was also looming over her, deliberately invading her space in a threatening manner as he growled, “What the hell did you say to my wife?”

Divine rolled her eyes with exasperation, wondering how she was supposed to know since she didn’t know who his wife was. She was about to say as much, but then realized that there was something familiar about the man and quickly dipped into his thoughts. A heartbeat later she was relaxing.

“Allen Paulson,” she murmured his name, getting an almost childish satisfaction when his eyes widened incredulously.

“How do you–?”

“I told your wife that you were having an affair with your buxom, blonde, twenty year old secretary, Tiffany,” Divine interrupted sharply, silencing him at once. “I told her that this Tiffany was pushing for marriage and that you, not wanting to lose her, but unwilling to give up your wife’s money preferred widowhood to divorce. I told her about your plans to bring about that widowhood on your upcoming vacation. I believe it was either her drowning or suffering a fall while camping in Yosemite National Park?” She tilted her head. “As I recall that trip was scheduled for this week, wasn’t it?”

When his mouth dropped open and his hold on her arm eased, Divine added, “I’m guessing by the fact that you’re here rather than in Yosemite, that she listened to my advice to make an appointment with her lawyer the next morning to change her will as well as remove you as the beneficiary on her life insurance.”

His hand dropped away, falling limply by his side.

“No doubt she also listened to my advice and hired a private detective. I gather she sent him to get photographic proof of your infidelity at that cheap little motel you like to take your secretary to everyday at lunchtime?” She slipped into his thoughts briefly, read the answer in the chaos there, and smiled with satisfaction. Not only had the wife done that, she’d then taken the proof straight to a good divorce lawyer. The woman was now safe and on her way to being single again. After that, though, the woman had told her dear hubby that the fortune teller at the carnival was the one who had given her the heads up and put her on this path and it had been the best twenty bucks she’d ever spent. Which was why Divine now had an irate and soon to be divorced and destitute husband on her hands.

Divine waited, braced for the man’s anger. But instead of the explosive rage she expected, he asked in a small, frightened voice, “How did you know? No one knew. I didn’t tell anyone what I planned. Not even Tiffany.”

“Did you even bother to read the sign when you walked your wife to my trailer that day two weeks ago in Pahrump?” she asked with amusement and then reminded him, “Madame Divine. Let her do a reading and define your future,” she reminded him.

“Yeah, but that’s just… It’s a scam,” he protested. “You’re a carnie. You just scam people out of their money for a laugh.”

“Yes, of course ,” Divine agreed coldly, and then tilted her head. “So why aren’t you laughing?”

Allen Paulson flinched as if she’d struck him, and then his awe and dismay gave way to the rage she’d expected earlier. Divine saw it roll over him, knew he was about to blow his top without the need to read him, but slipped into his thoughts anyway. It was like cutting through soft, half melted butter with a ceramic knife. The man was so angry his thoughts were wide open. Divine wasn’t terribly surprised to read that he’d brought a gun with him and planned to use it. She waited until he’d pulled the weapon from inside his jacket and raised it, though, before reacting. In fact, she let him get so far as to put his finger on the trigger before snapping her hand out, latching onto his throat and lifting him off the ground. She then whirled and slammed him against her RV.

When the gun fell from his hand and he moaned in pain, she released him. The man fell like a rag doll. He landed on his ass with his legs splayed, a dazed expression on his face, and Divine immediately dropped to straddle his lap. Gravel ground painfully into her knees, but she ignored that, caught him by the hair at the nape of his neck, pulled his head to the side and sank her fangs into his throat.

A little shiver of pleasure slid through Divine as thick warm blood began to gush from the wound, was collected by her teeth and passed into her body. It gave her an immediate rush as the nanos in her body swarmed, eager to collect this new supply of nourishment. The man had jerked in surprise when her teeth pierced his skin, and he’d raised his hands to try to push her off, but he never actually got around to exerting any pressure. Instead, he froze briefly, his mind overwhelmed as hers automatically began to transmit her own pleasure to him. In the next moment, he was moaning and tugging at her instead, pulling her closer with one hand, clasping her head with the other and murmuring encouragingly, “Oh, yeah, baby. Please.”

He was also arching his body under her, rubbing a sudden hardness against her. Divine usually didn’t cause pain in her victims, but this one deserved it. She also wasn’t terribly eager to let a man who had planned to murder his own wife dry hump her there on the carnival grounds, so she deliberately withdrew the pleasure that she was experiencing and had unintentionally shared. But she also slipped into his mind to control his reaction to prevent him from screaming out in horror and pain as his mind cleared and he became aware of what was happening.

Divine was always careful not to kill her hosts. Why kill the cow that gave the milk? Besides, killing was wrong, no matter how despicable the person was, so while she drank more than she normally would have, she pulled back and freed him at the point when he was weak and woozy, but long before the man could come close to dying.

Smiling coldly at his horrified expression, Divine stood, lifting him as she went. Once they were both upright, she released him, leaving him to lean weakly against the RV rather than have to touch him anymore.

“Listen carefully Allen Paulson,” she said grimly. “You will not hurt your wife, or ever again consider harming or killing anyone for profit or any other reason. If you do, I’ll find out, and then I’ll find you…” She raised her hand to run one finger lightly over the wound on his neck. “And then I will finish this meal, cut your head off and leave your cold dead body somewhere no one will ever find you. Do we understand each other?”

Allen Paulson nodded weakly. The man’s face was as white as his t-shirt, his eyes almost sunken with horror and he was sliding slowly along her RV, obviously eager to escape, but afraid to try and be stopped. Divine scowled. “And if you tell anyone about this, about me,” she emphasized, “I’ll do worse.”

He began shaking his head frantically and whispered, “I won’t. I swear.”

She narrowed her eyes, and then her nose wrinkled as the acrid scent of urine wafted up between them. Glancing down, she saw the wet spot growing on the front of his trousers and stepped back with disgust. “Get out of here before I change my mind and wipe yours.”

Allen Paulson didn’t have a clue what she meant by that– she could see it in his expression– but he didn’t stick around to ask.  He simply nodded wildly and sidled along the RV for a couple feet before finding the courage to turn his back to her and run.

“You should have wiped his mind.”

Divine stiffened at those words from behind her, and then turned slowly. She peered at the tall fair-haired man who had spoken. He was a greenie, an unskilled laborer and supposedly a local who had been hired to help out at the carnival while they were in town. The name he went by was Marco. Divine knew this secondhand, because while she was normally in on the hiring process, using her “special skills” to help Bob and Madge Hoskins who owned and ran Hoskins Amusements, this time she hadn’t been here. Family issues had kept her away and the hiring had been done by the time she’d caught up to the carnival. Had she been here to help weed out the troublemakers in the hiring process as she usually did, she never would have allowed Bob and Madge to hire the man. One, she couldn’t read him, and that was usually a sign of insanity in a mortal. This leads into the second reason she wouldn’t have hired him; the man, like herself, was an immortal. She’d sensed that about him quite quickly. Divine wasn’t sure how she’d known. She didn’t run into a lot of immortals. In fact, she’d arranged her life so that she wouldn’t. But there had been a frisson of awareness as she’d first passed him on returning to the carnival just before noon that day, as if the nanos in her body recognized and sent signals to those in his. She’d been avoiding him ever since.

But that hadn’t stopped her from finding out all she could about him. Not that there had been much to learn. He went by Marco, last name Smith of all things. The women all thought he was a hunk. The men thought he was practically a God because he was strong and could do the work of four men, and Bob and Madge were hoping he’d not just help out through their stay in this town, but travel with them to the next and the next and so on. For herself, Divine was wary. She had avoided other immortals for a reason and had been doing so for a very long time. She didn’t like having one around. It made her anxious and she disliked feeling anxious.

“Don’t you have something to do?” she asked, moving past the man and toward the back of her RV. The sign she’d turned had said back in five minutes and that time was up. Besides, she’d snacked on Allen Paulson and felt better for it. Break time was over.

“You should have wiped his mind,” Marco repeated, falling into step with her.

“He’ll keep his mouth shut,” Divine muttered, annoyed, mostly because she knew he was right. The truth was she hadn’t wiped Allen Paulson’s mind because it was slimy, and she hadn’t wanted to have to spend any more time inside his mind than necessary. Besides, he deserved to go through life terrified that she might someday revisit him should he set a foot wrong.

“And if he doesn’t keep his mouth shut?” Marco asked as they neared the end of her RV. “What if he goes to the police?”

“If he goes to the police, and if they don’t immediately lock him up as crazy but instead come to speak to me…” She shrugged. “I’ll wipe his mind, the officer’s mind and leave this carnival for another.”

“Is that how you landed at Hoskins’ Carnival?” Marco asked as they rounded the end of the vehicle. “You didn’t wipe someone you should have and had to move on?”

Divine turned on him sharply, an angry retort on her lips, but just as quickly caught back the words that wanted to spill out and merely said with forced calm, “You’re an inquisitive fellow, Marco. It’s not healthy around here. Carnies mind their own business. I suggest you do the same.”

Turning away from him, she smiled at the two women who were waiting in front of her door. Others had joined them. In fact, Divine now had a line up of a half a dozen people and it was growing by the minute, but she reserved her smile for the first two only and said, “Which of you would like to go first? Or shall I take you together?”

“Oh, me first,” one of the women said eagerly. “This was my idea.”

Divine nodded and led the woman inside, leaving Marco and all thought of him out on her stoop.

“Here, Mister.”

Marcus tore his gaze from the door Madame Divine had just ushered her client through and peered down at the small boy tugging at the top of his pant leg and holding out a half eaten ball of cotton candy on a cardboard cone.

“Here,” the boy repeated, holding it a little higher. “I don’t feel good. You can have the rest.”

Marcus arched an eyebrow, but took the cotton candy. He suspected the boy didn’t feel good because he was stuffed full of cotton candy, something drenched in mustard, powdered elephant ears and—he considered the last stain on the boy’s shirt consideringly and then decided it had to be – ice cream. The kid was a walking menu of everything he’d eaten that day. At least, Marcus hoped it was all the kid had eaten that day. Otherwise he’d be wondering if Dante and Tomasso hadn’t fathered the little tyke. They were the only two people he knew, mortal or immortal, who could have eaten like that as a boy.

“Danny! What are you doing? Get over here and leave that man alone.”

Marcus glanced at the woman rushing toward them from the midway and offered a reassuring smile even as he slipped into her thoughts to ease her mind that he wasn’t a child molester and nothing untoward was happening. By the time she reached them, she’d slowed to a fast walk, and was smiling in a relaxed manner.

“I hope he wasn’t bothering you?” she said apologetically as she took the boy’s hand.

“Not at all,” Marcus assured her.

The young mother smiled again and then nodded and turned away with the boy, saying, “Come on, honey. Your daddy is waiting with your sister in the Ferris wheel line. They’ll be worried.”

Marcus watched them go and then turned his gaze back to Madame Divine’s RV. The door was closed now as were the blinds. He couldn’t see the woman anymore, except in his mind’s eye and he was definitely seeing her there. Madame Divine was more than memorable in her gypsy getup. A white peasant blouse, worn off the shoulders, a crimson under skirt, a bright teal scarf skirt, an orange sash tied at the waist with gold chains hanging from it and tinkling merrily, a wide leather belt and a crimson scarf around her head. Gold hoops had dangled from her ears, a gold chain hung around her neck, several gold bracelets dangled from her wrist, and knee high black leather boots with stiletto heels strapped up the front of her legs had finished the outfit.

The woman looked damned sexy in the getup, so sexy in fact that when she’d straddled the would-be wife killer, Marcus had wanted to pull her off the man and onto his own lap. He’d been rather startled by that urge. Marcus hadn’t been interested in women for a while. Okay, for a couple millenia. Still, he hadn’t come across a woman like Madame Divine in quite a while either. The woman was walking sex in her get up, and his body was waking up and responding to it.

Obviously he had a gypsy fetish, Marcus thought wryly. It made as much sense as anything else at the moment. Certainly more sense than his own life presently did. It appeared at the ripe old age of 2548 he was having a midlife crisis of sorts. That was the only explanation for how he found himself doing a favor for Lucian Argeneau.

Marcus smiled wryly at the thought. Lucian Argeneau was not only the head of the powerful Argeneau clan, but also oversaw the Rogue Hunters and led the North American immortal council. Rogue Hunters were the immortal police force, they hunted down rogue immortals to be presented to the immortal council who then passed judgment on them and sentenced them to whatever punishment they saw fit, often death.

As the head of those two organizations, Lucian could arguably be the most powerful immortal in North America. It was hard to imagine him needing anyone’s help. But he did. He was searching for a family member, his niece, Basha Argeneau, who had been thought to be dead for millennia, but who may now be alive after all…and whom he feared had gone rogue.

Which is how Marcus had come to find himself at the carnival, eyeballing the trailer of a woman he couldn’t read and found incredibly sexy. Not that his not being able to read her bothered him. If this was Basha Argeneau, she was even older than he was and younger immortals usually couldn’t read immortals older than themselves. It wasn’t like any of the other signs of having met a life mate were cropping up, like renewed interest in food and such. Thank God, because if she had been a possible life mate and was Basha Argeneau…well, that would have been a doomed relationship from the start. Because Basha Argeneau was considered rogue…and rogues were executed. The last thing he needed at this point in his life was a rogue life mate.

“Hey! Marco! Are you going to stand around stuffing your face all night or help me with the pogo stall?”

Marcus glanced around with surprise to find Kevin Morrow walking toward him. The twenty-year old carnie was tall and stick-thin, his face a collection of freckles so thick that from a distance it looked like a tan. Up close though you saw that his face was definitely freckled, and it was also presently scrunched up with displeasure, reminding him that he was only supposed to take a fifteen minute break from helping to man the food stall.

“I was–”

“Stuffing your face,” the young carnie interrupted dryly and then turned away, gesturing for him to follow. “Come on. If you’re hungry you can have a corn dog while you work. It’s probably better for you than that sugary fluff anyway.”

Marcus blinked and glanced down at the cone with the half eaten cotton candy the boy had given him several minutes ago. Or what had been half eaten cotton candy. There was nothing left of the sweet treat now. Surely he hadn’t eaten it? He hadn’t eaten in more than a millennia. He didn’t remember eating it. But he did have a sweet taste in his mouth that was rather pleasant.

“Damn,” he muttered, tossing the cardboard cone into a garbage bin as he headed after Kevin. He’d eaten it. Couldn’t read Madame Divine, and was lusting after the woman. Oh, this wasn’t good.

Ignited, J. Kenner, Most Wanted series

Now we get a sneak peek at the latest in the J. Kenner’s yummy “Most Wanted” series, Ignited!

*****

About the series:

The Men

Evan Black. Tyler Sharp. Cole August.

Brilliant, fierce, determined. Sexy as hell. And utterly dangerous.

They make their own rules, find their own way, and to hell with anyone or anything who tells them otherwise, be  it a cop, a court, or a woman.

They’ve spent over a decade watching each others’ backs, protecting each others’ secrets, and relying on each others’ talents. They’ve taken risks, said “fuck you” to the law, and made a tidy profit in the process.

There’s not a scheme they’ve concocted that they haven’t pulled off, not a desire they haven’t achieved. And there sure as hell isn’t a woman they’ve pursued that they haven’t caught.

None, however, have captured their hearts.

None, until now.

The Women

Angelina Raine. Sloane Watson. Katrina Laron.

Three completely different women, each with a unique way of looking at the world. Each with secrets and ambitions she holds close to her heart.

And each more than capable of standing on her own two feet.

None are looking for a man. But whether  because of lust, greed or duty, each woman finds herself in a forbidden  bed with the one man capable of crashing through her defenses and taking her—both physically and emotionally—to her breaking point and beyond.

It’s a dangerous game—and what’s at stake is everything.

*****

Book One – Wanted-

He is everything I crave, all I desperately want—and he is everything I can’t have.

Evan Black embodies my every  fantasy. He is brilliant, fierce, and devastatingly handsome. But he is  also headstrong, dangerous, and burdened with secrets.

My family warned me to stay away, that I  could never handle Evan’s dark dealings or scarred past. Maybe I should  have listened. Maybe I should have run. But our desire is undeniable,  and some temptations you just can’t fight.

And from the moment we touch—the passion between us consuming us both—I know that I will never be the same.

Book Two- Heated –

I know better than to trust him, that I should never risk my heart. But fierce passion comes at a high price.

I grew up believing in right and wrong, good and evil, black and  white—that there were some boundaries that could never be crossed. And  then I met Tyler Sharp.

Bold, charming, and dangerously sexy, Tyler always gets what he  wants. But his smile can be deceiving, his dealings sordid, his  ambitions ruthless. I thought I was the one woman strong enough to  resist him, but our need for each other is too urgent to deny.

One look and I’m in trouble. One touch and I’m hooked. One night and I’m his. And once I fall, there’s no going back.

And now Ignited, Book Three  . . . .

Excerpt:

Sasha glanced away before she became trapped in his beautiful wild eyes. Her heart pounded like she’d received a shot of adrenaline. Either she walked away and went home, regretting not giving him a chance, or she gave him a chance and regretted giving him the opportunity to hurt her. “You’re making this hard. I should be leaving.” The clock was ticking to the start of her shift.

“We’re just getting started.”

He tipped her chin for another kiss. This one was almost chaste, a brush of lips that heated her blood and sent it scorching around her body at speeds that made her dizzy. She reached up for more, but he pulled away.

She caught herself before she begged for more. He was addictive. She glanced around, looking for Logan to save her, but he’d been sidetracked by Evie. Gage still held her. Without thought, her fingers traced along his jaw, his golden stubble rough on her skin. He couldn’t hurt her if she didn’t let him. Sex was easy; lust was good. Love was for idiots who believed in happily-ever-afters.

Yet she wanted more than one night. She wanted to know who he was. Could she find out without her heart getting trampled?

“What do you do, Gage, when you’re not riding mechanical bulls and chatting up girls at a party?”

He blinked as if surprised. “I do most of the running around on the farm.”

Sasha gave him another once-over, taking in his boots, jeans and shirt and the hint of a silver chain around neck. “What type of farm?”

“Cattle.”

“You’re a real cowboy?” Of all the men she could’ve kissed at the party, she’d picked him, as if she’d known there was something different and he didn’t belong.

“Yes, ma’am.”

A little shimmer of attraction ran down her back. But she wasn’t going to let him off that easy. “How come you’re in the city?”

“I had a few things to do. And what do you do when you’re not talking to strange men?”

“Paramedic. I have an early start tomorrow.”

“And you’re brushing me off.” He gave her a rueful smile.

Was she? He’d be gone in a few days. What did it matter what she did with him? Maybe they should complete his dare. Her skin warmed at the thought of getting naked with Gage. It had been a long time since a man had sparked this much interest, and he wouldn’t be hanging around. He had a time limit. Neither of them would have the chance to get too involved. He was her idea of a perfect date, yet she was standing here, gazing into his eyes instead of getting in his jeans. What was stopping her?

“I’m wondering how far you want to take that dare,” she finally said.

His eyes narrowed a fraction. “What do you mean?”

“We could find somewhere quieter…” She held her breath. Was she being too forward?

“Where did you have in mind?” Gage took her hand and kissed her knuckles.

Sasha let out a sigh, while lust danced through her blood. She hadn’t planned on finding anyone tonight, but Gage was making it hard to think. Being alone with him seemed like a really good idea. Lust and excitement mixed with nerves that weren’t usually there. For half a second she didn’t want to be his easy city girl. But that was who she was…but not who she’d be when she moved.

“This music is giving me a headache.” A smile graced his lips.

Was he playing, knowing she’d jump to the wrong conclusion? Well, she could play too. Her mind skipped through the possibilities. The music filled the house and the back yard. She wanted something a little private…but not too private. “I know just the place.” She took Gage’s hand and led him into the house, through the mass of bodies singing into a karaoke game and down the hallway at the front of the house.

She opened the door that led into Evie’s study. The modem blinked at her, but the computer was off. She drew Gage in, and he gave the door a nudge so it almost closed. The sliver of light cast the room in shadows that pulsed with the music, but the edge was gone and they could speak in soft tones.

“Quiet enough?”

“I think so.” He pulled her into his arms. “I can actually hear you.”

“What were you doing before, lip-reading?”

“You do have lovely lips.” He brushed his mouth over hers in a kiss that was a promise of what could happen if she wanted it to go further.

Excerpt:

Everyone had a guilty pleasure. Some gave in once and could walk away afterward. Others became a slave to it. Given the wicked spasms pulsating between  Officer Elisha “Elle” Taylor’s thighs, the deciding factor of which side she fell on was clear.

Seeing Durant Kane again cracked open her wall of defense. Elle gritted her  teeth as she waited on her coffee. Her usual early morning joint was  filled with commuters and the normal hum of conversations and steady  traffic. Her gaze traveled slowly over the handsome man standing at the  entrance of the diner. His golden skin, brilliant blue eyes hinting at  wise-cracking cynicism, and cropped blond hair gave him the air of a  playboy. Sophistication and confidence defined every move he made.

The shrewd gleam Elle knew oh so well in his baby blues matched his  smooth-talking ways. Although it hadn’t taken much talking for her to  end up in his bed. The dark designer suit lined his tall, muscular frame with contemporary style, as did the black, quarter-length coat he was  shrugging out of. She noted that same potency registered with several of the men Durant stood with as he gazed occasionally at traffic. They  seemed intent on his every word. She was addicted to him in all the ways that shouldn’t matter to a cop, but as a full-blooded woman–that was a different story.

Look away!

Elle turned to him just as Durant looked in her direction, a slow smile  tugging at the corner of his lips. She faced the counter. Where the hell is that coffee? She needed to be on the road, and not recounting the ways he’d made her  come a year ago. Knowing he still had the ability to captivate her  attention made her blood boil. Lines had been crossed, dotted, and  underlined in Durant’s company.

Guilty pleasures… Elle knew of them; she was experiencing one right now. The swipe of his tongue across his lips made her stomach clench. She balled her fist. Moments later, she felt the brush of his hand graze her lower back. She didn’t dare turn around, and with the steady stream of people roaming the diner, no one would notice that Durant was standing  inappropriately close behind her. The heat from his breath fanned the  back of her neck.

“Excuse me, Officer. So rude of me to reach over you.” He leaned forward, grabbing a menu.

“I should shoot you.”

She could hear the smile in Durant’s whispering voice. “A pleasure to see you as well, Elle.”

She raised her eyebrows, despite the sexual intensity spreading throughout  her body. “I doubt your associates would see it that way.”

Durant chuckled. “That’s why they’re waiting outside.” The sound of his  laughter was rich and filling, just as he’d been when their bodies had  intertwined.

Elle squeezed her thighs, standing stiffly. “Perfect, a henchman who does delivery.”

“I try to be as accommodating as possible to my employees and otherwise.”

Elle grunted. “Is that what you’re calling it these days?”

“There are many names I have for what I want to do to you.” He moved closer,  the hard muscles of his chest pressed against her back. An innocent  onlooker would only see a man perusing the menu and not the sensual heat ricocheting between them.

Durant snaked his right hand to the side of her waist, over her belly, and  tugged her backward. Her ass brushed his erection. “What’s good here?”  he said against her ear, inhaling her scent.

“Get your hands off me.” Elle’s eyes fluttered for a moment before she  pushed away, only to feel his hand clamp tightly against her. Her body  responded swiftly, and her clit quivered wildly. She bit her lip to stop from moaning out loud. She wouldn’t give him the satisfaction. “Damn you! If I scream–”

“If you scream, it’ll be a sound I’ve been longing to hear,” he replied huskily.

“Officer? Your coffee. We threw in a couple of chocolate glazed donuts for the wait.”

Durant edged back, pretending to be intent on the menu.

Elle jerked away from his intimate lock and turned her attention to the  cashier, flashing a smile. “Thanks.” The caffeine would do little to  smooth over the tumultuous emotions rumbling within her.

She turned to find Durant’s eyes glowing. “If you ever try something like that again, I will shoot you, Kane.” She maneuvered around him, wanting to put as much distance between them as possible.

He looked over his shoulder. “You never told me what was good.”

“I would think the fact that you are still standing.”

Once outside, Elle closed her eyes. The cold winter air drowned out the  heated vibrations and her frayed nerves. Fortunately it was the end of  her shift. The attraction she’d felt for him hadn’t gone any damn place. The realization slapped her firmly upside her head.

Did you really think it would go away?

It was not normal to feel like this, to act like some wanton teenager. It was definitely not her customary “love ’em and leave ’em before  attachments could be made” style. She had stayed away from Durant since  that night. Being around him clouded her judgment. Yet his heated gaze  had reeled Elle in, reawakening a forbidden desire that not only  threatened her sanity but her job.

He stoked something deep within her, a fire she hadn’t yet learned to  tame. The tremors coursing through her body must be payback for the  dormancy. There was a higher price to be paid if she gave in to her cravings. The  forbidden truth was she’d never felt more alive.

Elle opened the door to her cruiser. They lived in two separate worlds, and  nothing would change that. Sleeping with the enemy was dangerous; none  of her training had prepared her for a skilled criminal like Durant  Kane.

“Hello, Honey,” a digitized voice whispered into the receiver. “Or should I call you…Mother?”

Alaina Taylor frowned in confusion at the mention of her old nickname. “Who is this?” It wasn’t her daughter, Elisha. Her only child would not play on the phone. Her hand tightened around the cord. At the caller’s silence, Alaina asked again, “I said, who’s calling?”

“Your child.”

A chill swept through Alaina’s body at the venom in the stranger’s voice.  “I don’t have time for your foolishness.” Her heartbeat sped up. It couldn’t be, she thought. No,  this is someone’s sick idea of a joke and nothing more. After all this  time, she refused to think there was any other possibility. That life  was dead. Gone. She couldn’t relive that pain. Never again.

“Whoever this is, you have the wrong number. Do not call here again.” Alaina  started to hang up, but the laughter on the other end stopped her.

“You think it’s that easy, bitch? You ruined my life.”

“I-I don’t know what you’re talking about. How did you get this number?”  Alaina sagged down into the couch. “I don’t know what sick game you’re  playing, but–”

“Game? I guess you could put it that way. You certainly played with my life.”

“I told you, I don’t know what you’re talking about. Why are you doing this? I’m hanging up–”

“No! You listen very carefully, Honey. You may not know me, but you will. I’ll make sure of it. You are not the victim, though you play that role so well. I’m the one you  threw away like garbage.”

Alaina closed her eyes as a wave of nausea hit her. “I-I had no choice. I  tried to do the best I could.” The words came out in a hoarse whisper.  “Do not try to find me. Do you hear me?”

“Now that sounded mother-like, very authoritative, but there’s not a damn  thing you can do to stop me, now is there, old woman?”

“Who is this?”

“You’ll find out soon enough. I’ll be seeing you real soon.”

The line went dead.
