Mad About Moon

The Whiskeys series

by Melissa Foster

Blurb:

Fall in love with Jed and Josie in this emotionally captivating, sexy standalone romance by New York Times bestselling author Melissa Foster.

The perfect love story for those who enjoy fiercely loyal and insanely sexy alpha heroes, smart, sassy heroines, strong family bonds, bikers, babies, and more!

Can true love strike twice in one lifetime?

Josie Beckley refuses to believe there is a limit on happiness. A decade after she escaped her abusive parents and lost touch with her siblings, the death of her husband leaves her and her son homeless. But Josie has never been one to wallow in sadness, and when she takes a chance on reconnecting with her siblings, a sinfully handsome bright light from her past shows up and offers to help her find a way out of the darkness.

Most people wouldn’t see Jed Moon as someone to look up to. He’s been in and out of jail and has lived a less-than-stellar lifestyle. But years ago one woman saw through his bullshit, and he’s never forgotten her. Now she’s back in his life, and as a prospect for the Dark Knights motorcycle club, Jed promises to keep an eye on the sassy, sexy single mother who has never stopped lighting his fantasies on fire.

Jed and Josie’s combustible connection is stronger than ever. Having Josie and her son in his life brings out all of Jed’s protective instincts-and visions of a future he never imagined having. But when a shocking revelation knocks the insatiable lovers to their knees, it forces them to make choices that could change their lives forever.

Review:

As always with the Whiskeys, the latest book packs an emotional punch. There isn’t a lot of drama between Moon and Josie, which I appreciate in a romance, but their lives have not been easy and they have to face a lot from their pasts.

Josie was able to escape her abusive parents and find a happy life but seeing her siblings again means that she needs to decide if she’s willing to address old wounds.ย  Even here it is handled with depth but not melodrama – the past comes calling but it doesn’t run their lives.ย  I appreciate that a lot as Josie comes to terms with what she thought she knew about her past.

Jed has managed to come to terms with his own past and the things that he’s done, thanks to his friends, family, and the Dark Knights.ย  And now that he’s got a chance to reconnect with Josie and make a better life for himself, he stumbles over a couple of kids that are pretty much him as a teen.ย  Being able to help others is such a huge part of who Moon is and Foster works that in so perfectly here, finding a way for him to have a purpose he can embrace.

Foster knows how to deliver depth and dimension to her characters, their lives, and how they connect with,ย  love, & support those around them – you truly feel the family that they’ve created, regardless of blood, and it makes you want to be a part of their community.ย  Packed with humor, heat, and complex relationships,ย Mad About Moonย once again allows readers to fall into a story just brimming with emotion.

Carolyn Brown, The Perfect Dress

Carolyn Brown has been a well loved author for years and her newest is getting lots of love.ย  And I’m so happy she’s here today to tell us all about it!

*****

Hello, everyone and thank you for inviting me to your site today!

My granddaughter is getting married this fall, and sheโ€™s not one of those size six girls who can walk into wedding dress store, try on a dozen dresses and find the perfect dressโ€”especially when she has her heart set on a black lace dress for her wedding. When we began to shop for her dress, I wished for a custom wedding shop that catered only to women who wore a size fourteen or larger. So I created one calledย The Perfect Dressย and set it in the little town of Celeste, Texas. This summer I plan to bring my old Singer sewing machine out of retirement, and make my granddaughterโ€™s black lace wedding dressโ€”just the way she and I will design it!

The Perfect Dressย is not a real place so donโ€™t go to the local doughnut shop in Celeste and ask about it, but the town, the characters and the shop were all very real to me while I was writing about it.

Speaking of characters let me introduce you to Mitzi. Sheโ€™s and her two plus sized friends, Paula and Jody, have dreamed of putting in their own plus-sized wedding dress shop for years. Now itโ€™s a reality. Theyโ€™ve bought an old two story house at the edge of Celeste and hung out their shingle.

Jody is a thin vegetarian now, but when the girls were in high school, she was a big girl just like her friends. Sheโ€™s living proof that a woman will do anything for love, but when love goes awry, sheโ€™s sure glad that sheโ€™s got Mitzi and Paula to support her.

Paula is carrying a big secret. The three women have shared everything since they were little children, but she canโ€™t talk about her secret, not when both her friends are in the middle of drama themselves. She has to be the strong one to share Jodyโ€™s sorrow and Mitziโ€™s happiness.

Fanny Lou, Mitziโ€™s grandmother, is an eccentric old gal with lots of advice that sheโ€™s not one bit shy about spreading around. Sheโ€™s the mother role for all of them, constantly popping into the shop with a box of doughnuts, or the local gossip.

Lately Mitzi has been feeling like maybe her โ€˜perfect familyโ€™ is missing someone… perhaps the perfect man. She hasnโ€™t seen him since high school, but that doesnโ€™t mean that Mitiziโ€™s heart doesnโ€™t go pitter-patter for this awesome single dad. Graham towers above Mitzi, who is almost six feet tall. He has twin girls, who are also plus sized. He feels the sparks, too, but questions whether Mitzi could ever love some big guy who already has teenage daughters.

There is definitely a gap between the teenager girls, who help out in the shop, and Fanny Lou, the granny, and the three best friends. But true friendship knows nothing about ageโ€”itโ€™s love, support, and unflinching loyalty towards each other, no matter what the age.

The Perfect Dress

by Carolyn Brown

Release Date: April 16, 2019

Publisher: Montlake Romance

Blurb:

In the small town of Celeste, Texas, Mitzi Taylor has never quite fit inside the lines. Nearly six feet tall, flame-haired, and with a plus-size spirit to match every curve, sheโ€™s found her niche: a custom wedding-dress boutique catering to big brides-to-be with big dreams. Taking the plunge alongside her two best friends, sheโ€™s proud theyโ€™ve turned The Perfect Dress into a perfect success.

Just when Mitzi has it all pulled together, Graham Harrison walks back into her life, looking for bridesmaid dresses for his twin daughters. A still-strapping jock whose every gorgeous, towering inch smells like aftershave, the star of all Mitziโ€™s high school dreams is causing quite a flush.

For Mitzi, all it takes is a touch to feel sparks flitting around her like fireflies. She can just imagine what a kiss could do. Grahamโ€™s feeling it, too. And heโ€™s about to make that imagination of Mitziโ€™s run wild. Is it just a hot summer fling, or are Mitziโ€™s next designs for herself and seeing her own dreams come true?

Excerpt:

Mitzi rushed back to the sewing room, where the hum of two sewing machines filled the air. โ€œGraham Harrison just came in the shop to set up an appointment for his two daughters. He said they only live a few houses up the street from us. He looked like a bull in a china shop sitting on that pink sofa. And of course he didnโ€™t even recognize me, but I sure knew him the minute I laid eyes on him.โ€

At the mention of that name from the past, work jolted to a halt.

โ€œAll the girls in high school swooned over him, including Mitzi, but she hasnโ€™t told us if heโ€™s still as sexy as he was back then.โ€ Jody took a bowl of salad from the fridge along with a plate of vegetables that she stuck into the microwave to heat.

โ€œHeโ€™s aged very, very well, and Iโ€™m having cookies,โ€ Mitzi said.

โ€œSmart girl,โ€ Fanny Lou said. โ€œLife is short. Eat dessert first. So you had a little crush on Graham?โ€

โ€œEveryone did,โ€ Mitzi answered.

โ€œNot me. I was always in love with Lyle,โ€ Jody said.

โ€œWell, according to what I heard at the church bake sale today, Graham moved his daughters here to Celeste because they were being fat shamed down in Greenville. One of them knocked a girl on her butt, blacked both eyes, and bloodied her nose with one punch. It was the last day of school and they said they were going to suspend her for the first two weeks of next year for fighting,โ€ Jody said.

โ€œShe should get a medal, not suspended,โ€ Mitzi fumed.

Fanny Lou took a gallon jug of sweet tea from the fridge. โ€œWho all wants a glass?โ€

Three hands went up.

She filled four glasses with ice and then tea and carried them to the table. โ€œI remember when he went to work for his dad at the Cadillac dealershipโ€”right after he and Rita got married. His dad gave him a job on the lowest level, and he had to work his way up. Rita was furious because she thought theyโ€™d get a big house and a new Caddy every year. Stupid woman figured since his folks had money that he had an open bank account.โ€

Paula took the ham and cheese containers from the fridge while Mitzi pulled a loaf of bread from the cabinet. โ€œYou eating with us, Granny?โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll eat with you and Paula, but I donโ€™t want any of that stuff Jody is having. I donโ€™t eat fake meat. Iโ€™ll eat what I want and die when Iโ€™m supposed to. Slice some of them tomatoes I brought in here earlier. And Iโ€™d rather have bologna instead of ham and mustard instead of mayo,โ€ Fanny Lou answered.

โ€œMe, too,โ€ Paula said. โ€œI want one like hers.โ€

โ€œI was thinking the same thing.โ€ Mitzi set about making three sandwiches.

So Graham was divorced and raising girls on his own. Bless his heart for getting them away from a school that bullied them because of their size. Mitzi could relate to the girls. But then, so could Jody and Paula. Sheโ€™d always figured that Jody adopted her own modern-day hippie style to combat those feelings of insecurity. Paula had retreated into superstition. Mitzi had just plowed her way through emotions and other kids, spending a lot of time in the principalโ€™s office for fighting.

She pushed all that to the back of her mind, put the sandwiches on plates, and carried them to the table. โ€œYโ€™all know that this job for Ellie Mae could turn into a big thing. I bet her older sister will be the maid of honor and her mother will want a fancy dress.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s what youโ€™re in business for, isnโ€™t it?โ€ Fanny Lou said. โ€œMan, this brings back memories. Friday night was bologna sandwich night when I was a kid.โ€

โ€œWhy?โ€ Jody asked.

โ€œBecause Mama always cleaned house on Friday, and she didnโ€™t have time to make a big meal,โ€ Fanny Lou answered.

โ€œFunny how an hour of beading takes forever and our noon hour goes so fast.โ€ Jody pointed to the clock.

โ€œGood Lord!โ€ Fanny Lou finished off her sandwich and grabbed a cookie. โ€œIโ€™ve got an appointment with my CPA at one and itโ€™s a fifteen-minute drive to Greenville. See you girls later. You have my permission to flirt with Graham, Mitzi.โ€

Mitziโ€™s cheeks began to burn. โ€œI had a teenage crush on him. Iโ€™ve grown up since then.โ€

Fanny Lou winked as she headed for the door. โ€œPaula, since you live with Mitzi, Iโ€™m putting you in charge of being sure she takes her birth control pills every morning.โ€

Mitzi felt even more heat in her cheeks. โ€œGranny!โ€

โ€œWhen you get old you get to say whatever the hell you want to.โ€ Fanny Lou closed the door behind her.

Excerpt:

My eyes traveled around the room until I saw Jack leaning against the counter by the coffee machine in his department-issued navy-blue shirt, blue cargo pants, and boots. I flushed to find his eyes on mine. I couldnโ€™t get the feel of his hands or lips out of my head. He made no move to grab a donut, so I walked over to him. โ€œNot hungry this morning?โ€ I asked.

โ€œOh, Iโ€™m always hungry,โ€ he said, his eyes steady on mine as he took a sip of coffee.

After that dream, I couldnโ€™t help but take that comment literally. โ€œYou should eat an apple cider donut before theyโ€™re gone,” I said, heart pounding. I turned to grab a plate to hide my flushed face, but Jack grabbed my hand pulling me back. โ€œDonโ€™t worry about it, I can get it myself,โ€ he said.

The movement knocked me off balance and I fell back onto his hard chest. His arm came around my middle to steady me. โ€œWhoa there,โ€ he whispered into my ear, as his body curled around mine. โ€œI said I could get it myself. Youโ€™ve been on your feet all morning. Why donโ€™t you sit down and rest?โ€

I heard the guys joking around me, but couldnโ€™t follow their conversation. The room seemed to melt away and all I could think about was turning in Jackโ€™s arms and kissing him.

โ€œSamantha?โ€ Jackโ€™s voice caressed my ear again.

โ€œYeah?โ€ I asked, breathing in the smell of coffee, and leaning my head back a little to look up at him. His eyes crinkled in amusement and his lips tilted up into a smile.

โ€œAre you going to sit down?โ€

His chest was warm on my back, and my hands instinctively gripped his bare forearms, which wrapped around my waist. I wanted to sink back into him even more, but I reluctantly moved out of his hold, immediately feeling the loss of warmth.

Spotlight – The Promise of Us

Jamie Beck, Sanctuary Sound series, The Promise of Us

I’m so thrilled that I have Jamie Beck here today to give us a little peek at her new book, The Promise of Usย (releasing Tuesday)!

*****

1. Can you give readers a quick snapshot of your newest novelย The Promise of Us?

At its heart, this book is based on some favorite romance tropes (best friendโ€™s older brother, unrequited crush, second chance-ish) although the circumstances are unusual. Basically, Logan returns to town to help his sister recover and, in his desire to help his sister mend fences with Claire, he hires Claire to redecorate his apartment. What starts out as a somewhat manipulativeโ€”though well-intentionedโ€”plan flips on him. He remembers the version of Claire from before the gunshot wound and wants her to stop living in fear, so he sets about slowly challenging her limits to help her lead a fuller life. In the process, he falls for her, although his job and wanderlust (and Claireโ€™s inability to forgive Peyton) conspire to make her push him away. Ultimately, they have to figure out how to compromise if they want things to work out.

2. What makes Claire and Loganโ€™s story special to you?

Each book I write is special in its own way. I think what stays with me about this one is a sense of tenderness that developed in Logan that didnโ€™t really exist before he spent more time with Claire. He was a fairly selfish guy (meaning he put his needs and career aspirations ahead of everything) for most of his life. His sisterโ€™s life-threatening illness was the first catalyst for change, but his relationship with Claire develops a new facet of his personality. I liked him so much by the end of the story. And I had fun writing Claire, despite her being a very nervous, conservative character at the outset.

3. Your heroine Claire has suffered tremendously (both physically and emotionally) yet she perseveres and has made a great life for herself. What gives her strength?

In my mind, Claireโ€™s greatest strengths are her ability to be content with the little things and her gratitude for her family and friends. For the most part, she rarely laments her quiet life. When she had to give up her first love (tennis), she directed her energy into something else she enjoyed and made that a career. She feels that she is good at her job and she enjoys it, so that also gives her a sense of pride and accomplishment. I think her job (making old or ugly things pretty) is a bit of a metaphor for how she dealt with her injury.ย ย

4. Claire has had love and lost it. How has her past experience changed her?

I think losing her boyfriend to a best friend rocked her to the core. Those two betrayals shook a fundamental sense of trust in all relationships. And in love. She recovered much better from her physical injury that the emotional ones, that is for sure. In any case, this cynicism about love and friendship definitely makes it hard for her to believe anything Logan has to say, or to believe that he could truly love her.

5. What is her reaction to first seeing her childhood crush Logan?

Sheโ€™s caught unaware, so she reacts badly, especially because she suspects he is trying to manipulate her. Hostile might be how some would describe her mental state, although Claire tempers her feelings most of the time, so it is more of a quiet rage with a hint of desperation to flee!

6. It seems like Claire and Logan are complete opposites. She is cautious about new experiences, while he jet sets around the world. Was it difficult to write about two very different characters?ย

No. They are opposites, but in a complementary manner. In other words, he is able to use his strengths (courage) to help her tap into her own, and she is able to use her strength (contentedness) to give him a sort of stability and affection sorely lacking in his life.

7. What common ground do your heroine and hero have?ย

The have the common ground of growing up in the same community, with all the values and ideals that help form us as children. They also have mutual friends and some shared history, which binds them. In terms of their interests, they are both creativesโ€”him with photographs, her with fabrics and suchโ€”so they understand that way of seeing the world.

8.ย A hallmark of your writing is the maturity that your characters find throughout their journey of falling in love. What are some lessons that Claire and Logan must learn for them to get their happily-ever-after?

The hallmark of any well-written romance (of which there are plenty) is that its characters will have a strong arc (they will grow and become better, stronger individuals). In this story, Claire needs to learn to take risks again, and to trust that, come what may in life or love, she will survive and be okay. Logan needs to learn to compromise, and to learn that the relationships he makes in the here and now are more likely to bring true happiness than achieving any aspirational goal.

After all, she can survive anything. At least she thinks so . . . until her teen crush, Logan, returns to town with his sister, Claireโ€™s traitorous friend.

Excerpt

โ€œWhat are you thinking?โ€ Claire dropped her hands to the table.

Steffi shook her head, waving one hand. โ€œNothing.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t lie. Is there another problem Iโ€™m not aware of?โ€

โ€œNo.โ€ Steffi inhaled, held her breath, then exhaled slowly.

โ€œI know of one project that would make a sweet profit and let you really stretch your talent. โ€˜Skyโ€™s the limitโ€™ kind of budget.โ€

Excitement lifted Claireโ€™s spirit, straightening her spine. Anything that accelerated plans to open a retail outlet merited her attention. โ€œSounds amazing. Whatโ€™s the catch?โ€

Steffi hesitated.

โ€œNever mind. You wonโ€™t take it, so letโ€™s move on.โ€ Steffi spooned whipped cream into her mouth. โ€œOh! Molly says that Mrs. Brewster is thinking of remodeling her master bath.โ€

Mrs. Brewsterโ€™s late husband had left her comfortably well off, but youโ€™d never know it. She clipped every coupon available to humanityโ€”Claire had been behind her at the grocery store more than once. She put only two dollars in the collection basket at church each week, despite having enough money to leave more. And she gave out bite-size candy at Halloween. Bite-size!

โ€œWe canโ€™t rely on Ryanโ€™s mom as our major source of leads, and Mrs. Brewster spending big bucks on a remodel sounds improbable..โ€ She leaned forward, elbows on the table. โ€œDonโ€™t make me beg. If you have a solution, I wonโ€™t dismiss it out of hand, I promise. Iโ€™m not an idiot. We need income. Iโ€™ll do whatever it takes to keep the doors open.โ€

Steffi went still, her chin just above the mug held midair. โ€œWhatever it takes?โ€

Claireโ€™s hair stood on end, but she motioned โ€œLetโ€™s have itโ€ with both hands.

Steffi hesitated. โ€œHow would you like to redecorate a high-end condo in Chelsea?โ€

โ€œIn the city?โ€ Her entire body prickled painfully at the thought of putting herself in the midst of that chaos and danger. Sheโ€™d already been one madmanโ€™s random victim. Manhattan teemed with crazy people, not the least of whom were the ones who drove their cars like heat-seeking missiles. โ€œWhoโ€™d hire us instead of any of the premier designers there?โ€

Steffi met Claireโ€™s gaze. โ€œLogan.โ€

Claireโ€™s tongue seemed to swell and turn sticky. Work with Logan โ€ฆ Her blood thickened like warm syrup. Tingles and terror all at onceโ€”a sensation she both loved and loathed. Her own brand of crazy. Maybe she did belong in New York, after all. โ€œNo.โ€

โ€œYou just said youโ€™d do whatever it takes.โ€

โ€œNot that. Never that.โ€ Claire didnโ€™t need to look into a mirror to know that her fair, lightly freckled cheeks now looked like someone had smeared them with ripe strawberries.

โ€œAs I suspected.โ€ Steffi shrugged nonchalantly, as if she hadnโ€™t just pulled the pin from a grenade and dropped it on the table. โ€œSo that leaves us a little tight until something else comes up. In terms of our social media presence, I just read an article โ€ฆโ€

Claire heard Steffi talking, but the words ran together like white noise because Claireโ€™s brain was still stuck on the idea of working withโ€”noโ€”for Logan Prescott. His obvious ploy made her want to laugh. Did he really think he could buy her forgiveness for his sister? Well, Claire would never, ever forgive Peyton. Not even if he paid her a million dollars to renovate his condo.

โ€œClaire? Did you hear anything I said?โ€ Steffi turned her hands out in question.

โ€œSorry.โ€ She rubbed the scowl from her forehead. โ€œIโ€™ll find another way to turn up new leads. Working with Logan is a hard no.โ€

โ€œToo bad. Youโ€™d have so much fun decorating his place. Iโ€™m sure heโ€™d let you do whatever you wanted. Anything would be better than how it looks now. Guess he never cared before, since he was rarely around to enjoy it.โ€

Only a Prescott would own a million-dollar property that sat vacant as often as it was occupied.

โ€œIโ€™m not an idiot.โ€

โ€œDid I call you one?โ€ Steffi had the gall to look stunned.

โ€œThis has Peytonโ€™s paw prints all over it. Iโ€™d bet my last penny that she put him up to it. I donโ€™t know what I hate more, that she did it, that you took the bait, or that she knows weโ€™re desperate for money.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s not a conspiracy. I mentioned that I felt bad about putting you in this situation because of this home. Logan tossed out the idea on the spot.โ€

โ€œI canโ€™t deal with the strings that would come with his offer.โ€ Except now Claire couldnโ€™t focus on anything else because thinking about Logan took up all the space in her head. If Peyton hadnโ€™t stolen Todd, she mightโ€™ve pounced on a chance to work closely with Logan. Of course, then she wouldnโ€™t have been free to act on her desire. Not that she had ever acted on it before Todd, either. The hawkish way Logan could stare at her turned her to jelly around him andโ€”oh, just no. โ€œI thought you finally understood that.โ€

โ€œI do. Thatโ€™s why I wasnโ€™t going to say anything.โ€ Steffi crossed her arms. โ€œYou forced me to tell you.โ€

True enough. Loganโ€™s image flickered through Claireโ€™s mind again, poking at the tender spot of her pointless longing, like always.

She shook her head, dislodging all thoughts of Logan. โ€œIโ€™ll catch up with Mrs. Brewster and pitch a proposal for her bathroom. But we also have to scrape together funds to advertise and update the website, and you need to scare up reno work pronto. Promise me weโ€™ll earmark new revenue toward retail spaceโ€”โ€

A knock at the door interrupted her monologue.

Steffi rose from the table and disappeared around the corner.

From the other room, Claire heard Steffiโ€™s surprised voice say, โ€œOh, we didnโ€™t expect you so early.โ€

โ€œHope thatโ€™s not a problem,โ€ replied Logan, in his unmistakable baritone.

I Dream of Spiders

by Elle Keating

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Blurb:

The move to the remote town of Quarry Hill, Pennsylvania was supposed to help Griffin McGuire start over and forget the two people who betrayed him. As a paramedic at the local hospital, he would still have to interact with people, but the rest of the time he could hole himself away in the secluded cabin he was renting. It was perfect. For the first time in over a year, he felt like he could finally breathe.

That was until he met her.

A woman who doesnโ€™t know her own name or why she was covered in blood and standing in the middle of the road when he found her. Griffin knows he should contact the police, but something is preventing him from going to the authorities. It doesnโ€™t take long for him to realize that he was correct in trusting his instincts. Every time she falls asleep, she dreams and another memory is unlocked. Memories that are horrific and make him want to protect and hide her from the world.

Excerpt:

For the past ten minutes I stood in front of Trentโ€™s guest bathroom mirror and willed myself to remember. Why canโ€™t I see my captorsโ€™ faces in my mind? Why are all the other pieces coming together but the most important ones? I grip the sink and blow a lock of hair out of my eyes, but it just falls back into my line of vision.

Why canโ€™t you see them? You need to remember. For all our sakes.

I saw the look on Griffinโ€™s face tonight when he came home from work. Heโ€™s tired of this waiting game. Waiting for my damn memory to return completely. Couple that with the demons he is fighting on a daily basisโ€ฆthe manโ€™s at the end of his rope.

I let out a frustrated sigh and then brush my teeth. I hear my phone on the vanity ding as I spit and I look at the screen. What is it this time? An advertisement for erectile dysfunction medication or the secret to how to cure unwanted facial hair? Iโ€™m wrong on both accounts. I towel off my face, pick up my phone, and delete the email that promises I will lose twenty-five pounds in seven days.

Music suddenly erupts from the phone in my hand. I look down and notice that I accidentally hit my Pandora app. I hum along as Adele serenades me with her sultry voice, but then I realize I sound like a dying cat and I stop and pause the music. The house is again quiet and my mood plummets even more.

I wonder if Griffin read the note and ate the dinner I cooked him. I want to be pissed at him, be fucking furious over how heโ€™s treated me the last two days. Iโ€™m still mad, but after Trent told me about Miranda and what she did to Griffin, I canโ€™t bring myself to hate him. I definitely would have sworn off men and relationships too if the roles were reversed. Over bagels and cream cheese Trent made it clear that he thinks thereโ€™s hope for us, that Griffin will be able to let me in at some point, but Iโ€™m not so sure.

Hating the silence, I start surfing and end up choosing a classical channel. Something safe. One that wonโ€™t tempt me to listen to the words and think about Griffin. I step out of the bathroom and place my phone on the nightstand. Iโ€™m in the middle of turning down the comforter when I hear three quick knocks at the bedroom door. Since Trentโ€™s at work, it can only be Griffin. Another round of knocks ensues, faster and harder, and I flinch.

Fearing that thereโ€™s something wrong, I whip open the door and find Griffin standing there with his fist in the air. โ€œSorry,โ€ he says, immediately lowering his arm.

Heโ€™s showered and is dressed for bed. A white t-shirt stretches over his muscular chest and heโ€™s wearing a pair of black lounge pants that hang low on his hips. As much as I want to stare at his gorgeous body, itโ€™s his eyes I focus on. He doesnโ€™t take the opportunity to look me up and down or notice that Iโ€™m not wearing a bra beneath my pink tank top. His tortured gaze remains above my chin during the awkward silence we have going on.

โ€œWhatโ€™s wrong, Griffin?โ€

โ€œYou were never a mistake.โ€ His hands are shaking at his sides. I see him swallow hard and he shifts his weight from one foot to the other. I have never seen him look so nervousโ€ฆor scared. โ€œI just donโ€™t know what Iโ€™m doing,โ€ he says, his voice thick with something so raw that Iโ€™m brought to tears. I want to take him into my arms, kiss the tension away. I want to rid his mind of memories that still haunt him. I want to make her go away. But I donโ€™t want him to hurt me again. He must sense my apprehension because he steps closer and says, โ€œI know youโ€™re not Miranda.โ€

I reach for his trembling hands and place them on the sides of my face. โ€œIโ€™m not her.โ€

His eyes darken. His breathing quickens. I feel his fingers curl to secure my face in his palms. And then his lips are sealed over mine. โ€œIโ€™m sorry, Clare,โ€ he utters between kisses. โ€œSo fucking sorry.โ€

My arms encircle his neck and I press my body against his. He lets out a groan that has me fisting his hair and tugging him closer until I can feel his arousal through my thin boyshorts.

โ€œNeed you, Clare,โ€ he growls. Griffin backs me into the room and kicks the door closed behind us. โ€œLet me have you.โ€

Rachel Van Dyken, Red Card series, Risky Play

I’m so happy to have Rachel Van Dyken on today to share a few words about some of the best book boyfriends – sports heroes – I know they are one of my favs!

*****

Why Sports Heroes Make the Best Book Boyfriends

Hey everyone! Iโ€™m Rachel Van Dyken, author of over eighty (holy crap) books in multiple genres, one of my favorites being, sports romance! My latest book,ย Riskyย Play, is about two broken main characters who find themselves on a last minute holiday to Puerto Vallarta.

Pro Soccerย playerย Slade Rodriguez is trying to lay low after finding out his girlfriend and his ex teammate hooked up behind his back, for over a year. Licking his wounds he changes teams and moves to Seattle, but isnโ€™t ready to settle down yet. Needing time to himself, he gets on the first jet out. He sits next to Mackenzie Dupont on a plane and is immediately intrigued, especially since a few hours into the plane ride, they have single engine failure. She asks him what one thing he would do different. And they kiss. Once the plane safely lands, to protect his own identity, he gives her a fake name, Hugo. What he doesnโ€™t realize is sheโ€™s famous in her own right, so she does the same thing. After all, sheโ€™s running away from a broken engagement. What follows is a whole lot of steaminess and taking chances with a complete stranger assuming that itโ€™s just that, a one night stand, a two night stand. Whatever it is, Mackenzie’s obsessed with “Hugo’s” intense golden gaze, the eight pack helps, and the fact that he seems genuinelyย interested in everything she says. He promises the universe heโ€™s going to keep her, but sometimes the universe is against us. Tragedy strikes and they go their separate ways only to meet again in Seattle, this time, sparks fly and not the good kind The “I want to kiss you, then strangle you, then kiss you again” kind.

I love writing sports romances because I think it adds this extra layer of pressure from the press to act a certain way. Not only does Slade have to deal with paparazzi but he has pressure to perform, to lead his team to the championships after training with another team. I think it brings in so many details from behind the scenes that we never think about when watching sports on TV. Iโ€™m fully dedicated to interviewing real athletes (and my last sports romance I interviewed NFL players). This time I wanted to focus on a sport that isnโ€™t as huge here as it is internationally and really do it justice. These athletes eat, sleep, and breathe their sport, there isnโ€™t a lot of time for a personal life and if you do have one, the balance is always going to be a struggle (not to mention the fact that Slade is still mourning).ย In this book, I wanted to introduce a really strong female character that wouldnโ€™t let Slade project all those feelings and basically Mackenzie is the type of girl that doesnโ€™t put up with his crap. I think it’s important to have strong female characters that women can look up to. I love that during the entire journey my heroine doesnโ€™t give up. She knows her worth and demands that Slade recognize it too.

All in all it was such a fun book to write, I canโ€™t wait for everyone to read it!

Excerpt:

I was kissing her again.

Maybe it was because it had been months since Iโ€™d had a decent kiss, since Iโ€™d jumped into the arms of anyone who didnโ€™t know me by name.

I could be Hugo for a few days.

Hugo seemed spontaneous.

Hugo seemed relaxed.

Hugo seemed fun.

I sure as hell needed some fun.

I broke away from her kiss and trailed my fingertips down her chin. โ€œSo, now that weโ€™ve established the plane didnโ€™t crash and weโ€™re here side by side, what did you have in mind?โ€

Ashley grinned up at me, her eyes a bit hesitant as she looked from me to the ocean. โ€œWell, Iโ€™ve never gone cliff diving, I heard thereโ€™s a great place close by.โ€

My eyebrows shot up. โ€œNo offense, but you donโ€™t seem like a thrill seeker.โ€

She laughed. I decided I liked the way her laugh relaxed me, made me respond with a smile and a need to kiss her again. โ€œIโ€™m not, trust me.โ€ She sobered a bit. Her lips turned down.

I wanted nothing more than to press a soft kiss to the corner of her mouth just to see if it would it make it decide to smile in my direction again.

โ€œBut it would be fun, I need fun.โ€

I sighed heavily and looked at my feet. When the hell had I ever looked away like that? โ€œThat makes both of us.โ€

โ€œGreat!โ€ She walked ahead of me into her penthouse suite, which matched mine even in color. I suddenly wondered what she did for a living. I mean I could afford it because I had been the highest paid soccer star in Europe for the last ten years.

The place was around three grand a day.

I eyed the large master suite as she ran around and then held up her hand. โ€œOne sec, Iโ€™m going to change into a suit, alright?โ€

โ€œGreat.โ€ I smiled reassuringly. It would give me time to look around, not that I was stalking her, but I could never be too careful. I was still surprised she didnโ€™t recognize me. And I knew when she did, this little facade, this freedom I felt in my chest, the easy way she let me breathe around her? It would go to hell, and Iโ€™d need another escape.

I thumbed through a few of the magazines on the table, and dropped the last one down just in time to hear the sliding bathroom door open and see a goddess emerge.

A one-piece swimsuit covered her body. It had a plunging neckline that showed off two generously sized breasts, and I immediately regretted not telling her who I was.

Because clothing tended to get pulled off, not put on, when I was in the room.

I eyed the scrap of material she called a swimsuit, my eyes raking over her muscular legs, her curvy body.

โ€œUnless youโ€™re jumping naked, you should change too,โ€ she pointed out, then cleared her throat and looked away like she was insecure. Damn, the woman could make a man cut his own heart out for a taste of her special brand of sin.

I peeled my shirt off over my body and shrugged. โ€œReady.โ€

Her eyes went so wide I had to fight not to laugh.

I knew what she saw.

I had Instagram pages dedicated to my eyes alone, donโ€™t even get me started on my abs.

Eight.

Tight, packed abs, all tanned and golden like I was the sun god himself.

โ€œUh, right.โ€ Her cheeks brightened as she clasped her hands together. โ€œLetโ€™s go!โ€

I checked her out the entire time she walked ahead of me, and when she caught me staring I just shrugged and said, โ€œNext time wear more clothes if you donโ€™t want me to look.โ€

โ€œYou should talk,โ€ she fired back.

โ€œMisunderstanding.โ€ I grinned. โ€œI wanted you to look.โ€

She slapped a hand against my bare chest.

I laughed, and then grabbed her hand and kissed her fingertips. โ€œYou ready to jump off a cliff with a stranger youโ€™ve kissed twice?โ€

โ€œOnce,โ€ she corrected with a whisper. โ€œI kissed you, you kissed me, weโ€™re even.โ€

The doors to the elevator opened as I whispered under my breath. โ€œNot for long.โ€

Kai

Dark Assassins Book One

by Valerie Ullmer

Genre: Paranormal Romance

Blurb:

There are two words that described Kai.

Remote and Deadly.

And until six months ago, he was fine with that description. But when the vampire assassin spots a curvaceous woman, a human no less, who would come to fill his thoughts, he would gladly shake his persona for a moment in time with her. Instead, he kept his distance, watching out for her and learning more about her every time their paths crossed. But he had yet to speak to her. When a turn of events thrusts her into his solitary life, he must decide whether to complete his assignment, or protect her.

Olivia Sabin had dedicated her life to her work; finding a cure for cancer. She had hidden behind the mask of a scientist who cares little about anything beyond her laboratory, and for a long while she believed it herself. But when a mysterious man came to frequent the diner she visited nightly, her awareness of him devastated her concentration, and she came to look forward to the glimpses of him, however brief.

When she stumbles upon a horrific experiment at work, she knows heโ€™s the only one she can turn to. Sheโ€™s willing to sacrifice everything in order to protect him and others of his kind from the same fate. But first, she needs to find a way to get him to hear her explanation.

***Paranormal Romance featuring HOT Vampires and Shifters. Contains explicit sex scenes and each book in the series ends with a HEA.***

Excerpt:

That was the moment he spotted her from the corner of his eye.

Her mass of cascading dark, curly hair bounced against the burgundy mid-length trench coat wrapped tightly around her to ward off the chill of the late September night.ย ย But with her head tilted down, he was unable to see her face.ย ย Even from the distance of over two hundred yards, he could hear her mumbling to herself.ย ย As hard as he listened, he couldnโ€™t quite make out the words.ย ย The coat did nothing to cover her curves hidden underneath, and he found himself enthralled by the sway of her hips.ย ย His gaze traveled down her curvy body, and his groin tightened with every step she took.

Before he could contemplate his actions, he leapt from the deck and flew down the mountain, stopping when he stood, hidden in the darkness, a few feet from her.ย ย He forced himself to widen the distance between them, and started trailing her.

Experience and his enhanced senses kept him out of sight from her and the others who ventured out on the cold night.ย ย He soon found that she was so absorbed in whatever happened to be on her mind that he could have stood right in front of her, and she wouldโ€™ve ignored him and kept walking.

He trailed her as she closed in on the diner on the corner, learning that the small eatery was her destination on most nights.ย ย She chose that moment to brush her long hair out of her face.ย ย With that tiny movement, her fragrance of lemongrass and green apple drifted back toward him.ย ย A low snarl erupted from his throat as his body stiffened in shock; the unexpected reaction to her scent was so fierce, he was torn between his instant desire for her and self-preservation.ย ย The sound he hadnโ€™t managed to smother mustโ€™ve reached her, because her head turned toward him and her brows drew down in confusion.ย ย A split second before her eyes landed on where he stood, he stepped back, pissed at his infinitesimal loss of control.ย ย A silent sigh of relief passed his lips as she shook her head, not able to spot in him the dark, and continued on her way.

In his over two hundred year existence, heโ€™d never been attracted to a human.ย ย Blood was the one reason that he interacted with humans, and even that could be taken from a donor without him having him drink from the source.ย ย But as he tried to pass off a reason he reacted to her in such an elemental way, he continued to follow her, finding himself outside the door that read Blue Plate Diner.ย ย Obscured by the door, his eyes tracked movement as the waitress greeted her as if they were old friends.ย ย For a reason he couldnโ€™t fathom, he felt a surge of jealousy.ย ย He was still a stranger to this captivating human, and she intrigued him.

Without quite knowing why he had followed her, he opened the door and walked into the chrome and tiled cafe, taking the time to pull up the hood of his sweatshirt.ย ย He scanned the place and settled for a booth at the back of the restaurant, where he could watch her without being detected.

By the time heโ€™d sat down and scanned for any possible dangers, she had pulled out a laptop along with a sheaf of papers filled with formulas he couldnโ€™t decipher.ย ย Between typing and writing in the margins of the already filled pages, the concentration on her work was total.

He found himself mesmerized by the play of emotions on her face as she worked.ย ย A smile for when she figured out a problem, or a frown when something didnโ€™t quite fit, and everything in between.ย ย He couldnโ€™t take his eyes off of her.ย ย When she bit her lip in concentration, it took all of his control to keep his distance from her.ย ย He found that he had to grip the table to keep himself still, when all he wanted to do was devour her.

The spell was broken when the waitress had placed a club sandwich with a side of fries on the free space next to her elbow.ย ย He forced himself to relax, but kept his eyes on her when she reached for the sandwich absently and ate without really paying attention to anything else but the work in front of her.

After several hours, her hand covered a small yawn.ย ย She glanced at her watch, and he felt the side of his mouth tilt as she rolled her eyes.ย ย Thanking the waitress, she reached for two tens in her pocket and dropped them on the table before she packed up and left.

From that night on, he made a point to arrive at the diner minutes after she was seated, and spent hours scanning her face as he watched her work.ย ย And every night, he slid into the shadows as she walked home to her small cottage, with its bright white siding with cornflower blue shutters that matched her perfectly.ย ย Each night, he waited until she was safely inside with the door locked, before he made his way back to his home on the mountain.

His attraction also came with a somewhat unwanted reaction.ย ย Protectiveness.ย ย He estimated her height at under five and a half feet tall, and although she walked everywhere in their relatively safe little townโ€”to her job at Standard Biotech and her home, several blocks from the dinerโ€”he had to tamp down his need to protect her.ย ย From what, he couldnโ€™t explain, even to himself.

Blurb:

It had been close to a month since he last spotted the curvy brunette who had come to occupy his waking thoughts, and if it werenโ€™t for his flawless memory, he would have thought she had been a figment of his imagination.ย ย An emotion he couldnโ€™t pinpoint clawed inside him, a sense that he needed to find her before another danger presented itself.ย ย ย That feeling led him to stand outside a deserted neighborhood, his breath visible against the cold night, at close to midnight.ย ย If he didnโ€™t find her soon, he would have to give up his search and go back to work.

Every night since he had lost her trail, he would scout a different neighborhood in the mountain town of Snowfall, Colorado that contained vacation homes, empty because of the off-season, hoping to catch a glimpse of her.ย ย He had found evidence of her overnight stay at several, but he hadnโ€™t been able to track her until after sheโ€™d left.ย ย Although he sensed that he had been getting close, the time heโ€™d spent searching passed with excruciating slowness with no trace of the woman.

Reaper had first spotted her when his team had raided Standard Biotech to rescue several immortals who had been imprisoned, and to his surprise, the make-shift prison also containedโ€ฆher.

Hell, he didnโ€™t even know her name, but he knew her to be human.

The moment he walked into the glass enclosure that held her and the other prisoners, he smelled her fear.ย ย It took him a moment to locate her with her back pressed against the opposite wall, trying to hide in the shadows.ย ย A low growl escaped his throat as the guard in the room reached for her arm, wrenching her closer, as he walked backward toward another exit.ย ย Reaper took a step toward her, ignoring the insignificant human with the weapon.ย ย At his advance, the guard released his hold on her to grip the gun with both hands.ย ย Reaperโ€™s mouth twisted into a smile that promised pain.

The guard reached blindly for her the moment he spotted Reaperโ€™s sneer, but she held herself out of his reach, and at that moment he realized that her fear had nothing to do with their raid.ย ย Her eyes darted to the door, as if she expected someone to walk in and kill her.ย ย Protectiveness swamped him, and that unknown feeling had him wading through his own thoughts, too slow to reach her before another tried.

I got her.ย ย Kai started forward.ย ย The guard flinched at the quick movement, and he emptied the magazine into the vampireโ€™s chest.ย ย Kai grunted in pain, but kept his progress until he reached the woman.ย ย Reaching an arm out, Kai gripped the hem of her shirt.ย ย Before he could yank her close, the guard smashed the butt of the gun down on Kaiโ€™s forearm, breaking several bones and the vampire dropped to the ground.

Reaper darted forward and grabbed the guard by the throat, easily crushing his windpipe, before he tossed him to the side without any further thought.ย ย His eyes scanned the area because he expected the woman to be right in front of him, close enough to touch, but when he searched, there was nothing.

Mine!ย He raged inside his own head, not letting the others know about the fear shivering over him at the thought of her gone.

โ€œFuck, Kai, can you see her?โ€

The vampire grunted as he righted himself, bleeding profusely from close to a dozen bullet wounds, but he glanced around and he shook his head, confirming that the woman disappeared.

โ€œI can smell her.ย ย I still sense her fear,โ€ Reaper said.

After searching for close to a half hour, Kai hadnโ€™t healed enough to continue, and Reaper had been forced to give up his search for the woman.

They carried Kai back to his house where he could drink from his mate, Liv, and regain his strength, but every instinct inside him told him to keep searching for the missing woman.ย ย But without an idea where to start, desperation and hopelessness made his muscles and brain lethargic.

Destiny had given him a second chance later that same night.ย ย Liv had been kidnapped by the now dead Dr. Ames, the one who had captured and tortured the immortals.ย ย Reaper tried to suppress any thoughts about why theyโ€™d captured the human woman and what they might have subjected her to during her captivity.ย ย It was the only way he could keep his instincts sharp as they raided the warehouse to save Liv.

While they waited for Ghostโ€™s signal to breach, the familiar scent slammed into him, stealing his breath.ย ย The stiffening of his spine alerted Jade, who stood next to him in formation.

What?ย ย Jadeโ€™s surprised outburst rang in his head.

He looked down and something on his face had alerted Jade to scan their surroundings.ย ย The scent of fear lingered in the air, and although the fox shifter understood what it meant, her brows drew down in confusion at the intensity that mustโ€™ve shown on his face.

Ghost, the woman is here.ย ย Reaper needs to protect her, Jade communicated through their mind link.

Go.ย ย Weโ€™ll call if we have problems.ย ย Ghostโ€™s gruff voice gave him permission.

Reaper didnโ€™t wait; he took off at a run, desperate to reach her before she could be spotted or killed.

Excerpt:

Seth kept his head down as the pen in his hand absently wandered over what used to be a blank piece of paper, trying to ignore the group of girls near the front of the classroom who had been trying to get his attention for the past fifteen minutes.ย ย He could hear his name randomly thrown into the conversation, but chose not to engage them; he knew where that would lead.ย ย Each time heโ€™d turned down their offers of getting coffee or an invite to a campus party, they seemed more determined to find something he wouldnโ€™t refuse.ย ย It wasnโ€™t as though he didnโ€™t want to find a girlfriend.ย ย But when he had tried dating a few times throughout the years heโ€™d been in college, he been unable to find any woman who attracted him for very long.

Heโ€™d made the mistake of asking Emily for a date, the one who had been trying the most to get his attention several rows away since heโ€™d walked into the classroom, and it had been a disaster from the moment heโ€™d picked her up for dinner.ย ย She had taken a picture of them together at her front door and then proceeded to text her friends through the entire date, clicking pictures of her hugged to his side, until heโ€™d called off the date and drove her home.ย ย After that one time, he had no desire to do it again, but he couldnโ€™t seem to escape her and her friendsโ€™ presence.

Although heโ€™d been excited when heโ€™d first started college two years ago, he was glad to be graduating after this last semester so he could start working full-time with Liv in the lab.ย ย Along with Hunter, Liv and he hadnโ€™t gotten any closer to figuring out what made an immortal unique.ย ย An immortalโ€™s bloodโ€”whether shifter or vampireโ€”could fend off diseases and had the ability to regenerate, but there was no clue in the cells as to why.ย ย It intrigued Seth, although he hadnโ€™t wanted to or planned to become immortal.ย ย But if they could find out the specifics, then he could protect those closest to him, those he considered family.

And although he chose to concentrate on his career instead of trying to meet the right woman, he couldnโ€™t help but feeling lonely from time to time.ย ย He knew that the possibility of finding someone for him at school was slim.ย ย With his future his top priority, he could push those thoughts aside and concentrate on graduating.ย ย And after watching Kai with Liv and Reaper with Ara, he knew that he couldnโ€™t settle for anything less than what they had.

But in order to move on, he needed a couple of classes that heโ€™d put off until the last semester of his senior year.ย ย He had no interest in economics, but he needed it as a requirement to graduate.ย ย Determined to keep his head down and concentrate on studying, he blew out a breath as he leaned back on his chair and hoped that this semester would pass quickly.

Picking up the sound of the back door closing, Seth glanced to his right.ย ย His eyes narrowed as he scanned the woman who started down the stairs of the auditorium classroom and took a seat a couple of rows down from him.ย ย A hoodie covered her hair and her face but something about her movements, quick and efficient, drew his eyes over her.ย ย She mustโ€™ve sensed his scrutiny because once she was seated, she glanced up and met his gaze.

Beautiful.ย ย It was the one word that came to mind when he gazed into her silver eyes.ย ย He had suspected when she had walked into the classroom, but her eyes confirmed his suspicions.ย ย He watched as she scanned her surroundings before she settled her gaze back on him.ย ย He couldnโ€™t help the tilt of his mouth, a smile that was for her alone.ย ย He widened his smile when he could hear the audible intake of breath from the short distance away.

He found himself disappointed when the professor walked in and started class, grabbing her attention away from him.ย ย Over the next hour, he couldnโ€™t have recited one word of the lecture and right before class ended, he slipped out the door she had come through.ย ย He leaned against the opposite wall and waited for her exit.

Time seemed to stall for several moments before the noise of shuffling feet reached him.ย ย Most of the class exited through the main doorway near the front of the classroom; for a moment, he thought she had gone with the crowd.ย ย He breathed easier the moment the door in front of him swung open.ย ย He watched as she raised her hand to readjust the hoodie over her hair but froze when she spotted him leaning casually against the wall.ย ย She dropped her hands to her side, and he was able to see her without obstruction for the first time.

It took him awhile to drag his gaze from silver eyes that were similar, yet completely different.ย ย His gaze traced over her long lashes that brushed against her skin as she blinked in surprise.ย ย There was a sprinkling of freckles across her nose and cheeks but what drew his gaze was her mouth.ย ย Her lips were full and two-toned, peach and pink.ย ย They opened as he continued his silence while assessing her.ย ย Her reddish-brown hair framed her face, and something deep inside Sethโ€™s chest kicked, hard.

When he thought that she might not be interested, her gaze dropped to his lips before continuing down.ย ย Her eyes scanned him until he felt as though she was already intimate with his body.ย ย He was grateful for the assassins and their training regimen over the past couple of years because he had managed to fill out a bit and added muscle to his mostly tall, gangly frame.

โ€œHey gorgeous, Iโ€™m Seth.โ€

He wanted to reach out and have some tangible proof that she was real and standing in front of him in that moment in time, but he knew that she would run from him before he learned anything about her.ย ย And it was crucial that he got know her.

Instead of reacting to his endearment or his introduction, she leaned closer as her eyes roamed over his face.ย ย Before she pulled back, she took a deep breath.ย ย โ€œWhy do you smell like vampire and several species of animal?โ€

Excerpt:

Xander glanced up from the thriller he was reading when heโ€™d heard the sound of car tires turning onto his driveway, realizing that time had gotten away from him.ย ย Gunnar and Kane were coming over for weapons training Ghost had scheduled on New Yearโ€™s Day, for a reason that escaped all three of them.ย ย Xander had designed and built the gun range deep into the woods behind his newly completed house and Ghost had designated it the training center for all of the assassins.ย ย And he couldnโ€™t fault Ghost for wanting his assassins to train.ย ย There had been another threat to Dark Company that Ghost had downplayed, not giving any of them details, but Xander could tell that heโ€™d worried about it.

Besides, Xander had bought a Sig Sauer P226 over the holidays and it would be his first chance to test it out.ย ย And although he would never admit it aloud, he was grateful for the company so soon after the holidays.

Seth and Aubrey had gotten married back in November and although he was happy for them, and for Kai and Liv, and Reaper and Ara, he felt the stark loneliness acutely.ย ย Shaking off his melancholy, he opened the door.ย ย But before he could greet them, the three of them froze.ย ย They could hear the distinct crunching of snow and pine needles under heavy boots.

โ€œAbout two miles north.ย ย Are you expecting anyone else?โ€ Gunnar asked.

โ€œNo.โ€ย ย Xander closed the door behind him and engaged the lock before he followed the other two as they moved toward the sound at a quick clip.ย ย He hadnโ€™t even bothered to grab a coat, but the snow and cold barely registered, even in his thin pullover and jeans.ย ย At least he had his shoes on before his friends arrived.

His eyes searched for movement, sensing the other two close, as they approached the origin of the sounds.

โ€œI hear seven different stridesโ€ฆno, wait, make that eight.ย ย The last one has a lighter footfall than the others.ย ย Woman, possibly?โ€

That was when they heard the sound of metal slapping against a palm, as if they were getting ready to fire a gun.

Split up and weโ€™ll surround them.ย ย He used their mind link so no one could overhear their conversation.

Gunnar and Kane met his eyes and nodded, once, before they disappeared into the pines.

Xander heard the distinct steps, those trudging through the knee-deep mountain snow at an almost prohibitive pace, grunting as they grew tired from their trek.ย ย He knew that if they engaged them, the assassins would have the advantage of stealth, along with their ability to move freely.

Got eyes?

Xander received a flash of an image.ย ย Kane had gone for higher ground and had a view from miles around.

Yeah, on three of them.ย ย Dressed in white camo.ย ย They donโ€™t seem very coordinated and they are dragging the barrels of their AR-15s through the snow.ย ย Dumbasses.ย ย Xander heard Kaneโ€™s sarcasm and bit back a laugh.

Then he heard from Gunnar.ย ย He and Jade were the best trackers he knew.ย ย I got the others.ย ย Thereโ€™s a smaller figure, but whoever it is, their features are obscured by a hood and bulky jacket.ย ย That one doesnโ€™t have a weapon.

Another image flashed and this one showed the clearing where the entire group sprawled out without any thought to formation or protection.ย ย Some had guns strapped to their backs; others held the guns loosely in their hands, unprepared to shoot at any sound or movement.

Xander soon moved into position and had eyes on them.ย ย He spotted an older man with short cropped, dark hair sprinkled with gray as he turned toward the small figure Gunnar spoke about.

โ€œWhat animals made those tracks?โ€

Xander rolled his eyes.ย ย The snow was too deep for any definitive answer.ย ย It could have been anything from a bear to a fucking moose.ย ย He paused to hear the answer, but the mumble that came did nothing to clarify who the person was with these armed men.ย ย But something clicked and it made perfect sense.

I think they are looking for us.ย ย They have magazines clipped to their belts, handguns within easy reach, and knives for hand-to-hand combat.ย ย They are looking for animal tracks, and they are way too fucking close to where Reaper, Kai, Seth, and I have houses.ย ย Thereโ€™s nothing else up here that they could be searching for.

Xander froze when he heard a feminine voice carry over to him.ย ย She sounded closer than she had been even a few moments before.ย ย He should have sensed her coming closer.ย ย But the only question on his mind was why the fuck she was tagging along with a group of mercenaries.ย ย He heard the voice again, a tinny version of her voice, and for a long moment he couldnโ€™t understand the words.ย ย Until she stepped forward.

No, no.ย ย Not that way.ย ย Not that way.

Something warmed his chest as he heard her in his head as clearly as if they were speaking aloud.ย ย A familiarity washed over him and he felt connected to this woman in an elemental way.ย ย A feeling of a peace settled over him.ย ย He knew this was the first time heโ€™d ever heard her voice.ย ย He was so stunned and happy that he didnโ€™t even question how they were able to mind link.

Can either of you hear the womanโ€™s thoughts?

Woman?ย ย Gunnar sounded confused.

Kaneโ€™s reply was quick and clipped.ย ย No.

Hello?

Hello?

Xander tried to get her attention.ย ย Can you hear me?

He held his breath when he heard her distinct gasp, knowing that their mind link worked.ย ย His chest filled with dread at the thought that she gave herself away, until he heard her next words.

โ€œI spotted a grizzly bear in the trees to the west.ย ย Sorry, I startled him and he ran off.โ€

For long seconds, the men in the clearing stared at the woman before they were ordered to keep searching.

Xander stood close enough that he could see her curves underneath the heavy white parka.ย ย And having the worst timing in the world, Xander felt himself harden.ย ย He took a deep, cleansing breath of sharp mountain air that instantly cooled his overheated body.

Yes, I can hear you.ย ย These men, seven in total, are looking for immortals.ย ย They have been contracted by my boss at US Fish and Wildlife to kill them.ย ย Apparently the immortals are supposed to become animals.ย ย Can you help me without hurting yourself?ย ย They are heavily armed.

Excerpt:

Jade caught a scent of a human as she entered the fourteen-story building in downtown Snowfall.ย ย It wasnโ€™t just any human scent, but something that made all of her instincts flare.ย ย She knew that sheโ€™d never caught this particular scent before, but something told her that this human might be important to her.ย ย She tried to brush it off as quickly as the thought came, but she couldnโ€™t find it coincidental she smelled it in the same steel building owned by Ghost and housed the headquarters of Dark Company.

As she dismissed the fleeting thought of searching for the scent, her heart thumped once, hard, in her chest at the thought of not finding its owner.ย ย She forced herself to walk toward the elevator bank, ignoring the unwanted perusals she received from the men in the lobby.ย ย Even in an unassuming hoodie and black yoga pants, she drew unwanted attention.ย ย A side effect of being an immortal.

The elevator opened as soon as she pressed the up-button and she kept her gaze down as she walked into the elevator.ย ย She entered the code to get to Ghostโ€™s private floor, her movements too quick to be caught by the human eye, before she squeezed into the corner.ย ย Jade used her other senses as three men in suits and two women entered the enclosed space with her.ย ย There was no need to glance at the glass interior that covered the back wall to see what she looked like.

She sensed eyes on her.ย ย Instead of searching out the gaze, she whipped her long, straight dyed black hair into a bun on the back of her head with quick movements before sneaking her hands into the front pockets of her hoodie.

Jade waited patiently as the car traveled toward the penthouse, her ultimate destination, but she couldnโ€™t help but try to find the intriguing scent from earlier.

After my meeting.

All she knew was he hadnโ€™t used the particular elevator she was in and the higher the lift took her in the building, the more his scent dissipated.

In her entire existence, or what she remembered of it, sheโ€™d never been attracted toโ€ฆanyone.ย ย Sheโ€™d never felt the pull to find someone either.ย ย But lately, sheโ€™d felt increasingly restless whenever she had any downtime and her skin tingled in a way that had nothing to do with signaling immediate danger.ย ย It was as though her body tried to convey something she didnโ€™t understand.

Her thoughts were interrupted when a man who had gotten into the elevator with her on the first floor stepped into her personal space.

โ€œHey, beautiful?โ€

Jade rolled her eyes and raised her head to glare at the man.ย ย Of course, he wouldnโ€™t take the hint that she wanted to be left alone.ย ย To emphasize the point, she crossed her arms and leaned against the wall, moving away from his intrusion.

The man decided to take this as an invitation and moved to wrap his arm around her waist.ย ย The move gave her a clear shot to his ribs and she took it, gently moving her elbow back and making contact.ย ย She flinched when she heard a distinctive crack, realizing she hadnโ€™t been careful enough.ย ย Before she could apologize, the elevator door opened and he ran off without looking back, holding onto his side.

She sighed.

Jade had never told anyone, not even Liv, who knew more about her than anyone else.ย ย But she hated being the center of attention.ย ย Sheโ€™d gotten so desperate to avoid it that she dyed her hair black in order to detract from her naturally soft ginger hair, green eyes, and freckles that made her look young.ย ย But instead of diverting attention, she somehow drew more.

She wanted to be known for her fierce fighting and being a good friend.ย ย She couldnโ€™t care less what she looked like and even less if she had a mate.ย ย Xander had wondered about Frost for decades before meeting her, thinking heโ€™d missed her.ย ย Reaper hadnโ€™t discounted his own mate, especially after Kai found Liv, but the moment he laid eyes on Ara, he knew she was for him.ย ย It had taken Kai almost losing Liv to recognize what he knew all along.ย ย And their Seth had grown up and married Aubrey, the sweetest vampire and woman Jade had ever known.

She enjoyed her life with her family, and loved her job because she believed that she made a difference.ย ย But each time another assassin met their mate, their mates took one look at her and expected Jade to be the competition.ย ย She never blamed them, but it hurt her a little each time it happened.

Gunnar was right when he described her to Liv as needing a lot of contact and that she loved touch.ย ย But it wasnโ€™t because she was seeking sexual pleasure.ย ย Being physically close to her family, being able to hold Silas and hug those close to her, made her red fox relax in contentment.ย ย It was why she loved it when Silas sought her out and they talked for hours about everything and nothing.

But being sexually intimate with someone required trust.ย ย She had ways to pleasure herself that didnโ€™t make her vulnerable to anyone.

Jade shook off her thoughts as the elevator car came to a stop on her floor.ย ย She would find out what Ghost wanted and then head to Xanderโ€™s.ย ย She promised Silas that they could shift and run through the woods to Kaiโ€™s, where they would have dinner with the rest of the family.

As soon as the doors opened, she caught the scent again, only concentrated on this floor.

Wellโ€ฆshit.

Whatever Ghost wanted, he had a human in his office, most likely her mate.

Excerpt:

Hunter trudged through waist deep powder, grumbling about the situation he was in and cursing whatever deity who made it snow four days into September.ย  He was used to all weather, and the cold wasnโ€™t the issue, it was the fucking drudgery of miles and miles of hiking through the stuff as he babysat Drew that grated on his nerves.

It wasnโ€™t as though he begrudged Jade her happiness at finding her brother after all these years.ย  But they realized after Ghost had hired him as an assassin, the man had never grown up.ย  He pranked all of them althoughย each of the assassins hadย threatened him to knock it off or risk bodily harm.ย  They would never kill him, but Hunter was thinking about breaking his jaw for the fact the crunch as his fist connected would satisfy him for half a second before he healed.

โ€œYou canโ€™t begrudge me a little fun. ย Iโ€™ve been looking for Jade all these years and I took my responsibility to my family seriously.โ€

That excuse lasted for about fifteen minutes and other than Jade and her mate Noah, the others avoided Drew as much as possible.

Hunter blinked and his gaze darted toward the left when a movement caught his attention.ย  Less than a second later, he bit back a laugh when Kane took a header in the snow, sending up a puff of white into the air as he slammed down face first on the ground.

When ginger hair, brighter than Jadeโ€™s, popped up, Hunter smiled.ย  But as Drew stood, he wiped the snow off his shoulders several feet from where Kane lay, and Hunter cleared his throat before he sent a disappointed look toward the ginger.

Ghost assigned he and Kane to training duty, despite their protests. ย Ax, Thomas and Isaac, Gunnar, and Reaper and Ara had tried to work Drew through the assassin’s training regiment and all of them failed.ย  Drew either ignored what they had to say or refused to take part in the exercises until they’d given up and threatened Ghost if they had to deal with Drew ever again.

Ghost then foisted Drew onto Kai. ย Hunter expected Drew to be dead by the end of the day. ย Kai was the most patient of the assassins and after two days of unrelenting training, he had given up on Drew and walked away without a word.ย  Hunter hadnโ€™t been there, but Drew still flinched whenever they mentioned Kai.ย  Kai had a similar reaction to the man, snarling whenever he came near.

Jade and Noah couldnโ€™t train him.ย  Jade would never endanger her brother, even to teach him the basic of hand-to-hand combat or even tracking.ย  They would end up catching up on all the years they missed from each otherโ€™s lives.ย  And Noah, not wanting to do anything to hurt Jade, steered clear of Drew, especially after their tumultuous beginning.

Hunter didnโ€™t mind the tiger shifter…ย for about ten minutes at a time.ย  He knew the sooner he and Kane trained him to Ghostโ€™s standards, the sooner he could steerย clear of him.

Kane bent his arms to prepare for lifting himself up off the ground when all three assassins sensed movement toward the west.ย  They all stopped and opened their senses for clues who was heading toward their position.

Hunter scented shifters, multiple, converging fast.

Iโ€™m guessing three. Not bothering to cover the noise. Iโ€™ve gotย point.

Hunter cut through the snow with Kane on his right and Drew on his left.ย  As he caught sight of a black glove out of the corner of his eye, he glanced down and cursed.ย  They were in their black tactical gear.ย  Hunter had chosen it because Drew needed to get used to moving around with weapons and ammunition, as most of his assignments would be raids and possibly combat situations instead of stealth, which most of them specialized in.

They hadnโ€™t planned on running into any trouble so close to the mountain where most of the assassins claimed land and built homes of their own.ย  Because of this, Ghost moved his base of operation to Snowfall from Denver and claimed his own piece of land in the same area.

These shifters should have realizedย they trespassed in dangerous territory. ย But if they were from Anzรปโ€™s group, Hunter knew they didnโ€™t have enough sense or training to avoid a fight.

Keep one alive. We need intelligence. Drew?

Drew, without taking his eyes from the target’s position beyond the pines and evergreens, nodded once.

Hunter knew the kid had skin in the game. ย Because of Jade and the threat to her earlier in the year, a warrior replaced his teasing personality.

Knowing Kane was always ready for a fight, Hunter turned his attention toward the tree line and observed as three shifters stumbled through before two more followed. ย They stopped in their tracks and their eyes widened as they took in three immortals, all decked out in black.

Hunter wondered for a second if they would split up and run, making the assassins chase them through the fucking mountains.ย  A growl escaped his throat and the new additions seemed surprised by them and the hostility coming from him.

The shifter in front gave a war cry before all five of them charged.

Excerpt:

Victor noticed Shannon sitting in the open dining area of the hotel the next morning, drinking coffee and reading on her e-reader. Heโ€™d spent most of the previous day licking his metaphorical wounds and nursing a headache.

Dressed in cotton pants that went midcalf and a light shirt, she looked like she was dressed for a long plane ride home. As much a pain in the ass as the woman had been, he felt compelled to say goodbye. After all, he was the reason she was there.

He walked up quietly behind her. โ€œIf it isnโ€™t woman who fed me mezcal.โ€

The sound of his voice made her jump.

Too bad she wasnโ€™t holding her coffee.

โ€œYou have got to stop doing that.โ€

Without an invitation, he sat and smiled. She took a deep breath and looked away, came painfully close to rolling her eyes. For some reason, he appreciated the fact she held back and wondered just how much it would take for her to disregard him with such a gesture.

โ€œPlease, sit down,โ€ she said.

He glanced at his chair. โ€œThank you.โ€

She set her e-reader aside and regarded him. โ€œI thought for sure youโ€™d be back at the office by now.โ€

So did he. โ€œI couldnโ€™t fly yesterday even if Iโ€™d found a flight.โ€

โ€œOh?โ€

He didnโ€™t miss the tiny shine in the corner of her eye.

โ€œNo. I had one too many the other night. Inflicting that on whoever had the misfortune of sitting next to me on the flight home was more than I could take after my flight here.โ€

She smiled, briefly, and lifted her chin. โ€œIโ€™m glad to hear youโ€™ve evolved since Friday.โ€

Unable to help himself, he laughed.

Her smile returned.

Victor felt a twist in his gut, a pull to something he didnโ€™t want to name. โ€œI guess youโ€™re leaving today,โ€ he said.

She shrugged. โ€œI am.โ€

He nodded. โ€œJustin informed me you made sure I didnโ€™t decide to go for a late night swim.โ€

โ€œIt was tempting. But then I realized you wouldnโ€™t be able to pay me if you swallowed too much water.โ€

โ€œSelf-preserving. Very smart of you.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s a gift.โ€

When the woman wasnโ€™t tossing barbs at him, she was beautiful. Perfect lines in her face, high cheekbones โ€ฆ he couldnโ€™t tell if her olive skin was from an ancestor or the byproduct of living in Southern California. Not anything like anyone heโ€™d been attracted to before.

What was he thinking? He wasnโ€™t attracted.

Victor shook his head and stood. โ€œWell, I saw you sitting here and thought Iโ€™d at least say goodbye.โ€

She stood with him and extended her hand. โ€œFor what itโ€™s worth, Iโ€™m sorry things didnโ€™t go as planned this weekend.โ€

Her fingers were long, elegant. Just like the woman. Disappointment saying goodbye was an emotion he had no business feeling. Yet there it was, like a lump in his chest.

โ€œAre you?โ€

Her smile cracked. โ€œNo. But it seemed the right thing to say. I am sorry for the heartache. Thatโ€™s never easy, even if itโ€™s for the right reason.โ€

Victor realized he was still shaking her hand and let go.

โ€œGoodbye, Victor. Good luck to you.โ€

โ€œGoodbye, Shannon.โ€ And because it was the appropriate thing to do once you said goodbye, Victor walked away. When he turned to take a last look, Shannon sharply moved her gaze to her coffee.

Crazy on You

A Lover and Harmony Romance, #3

by Crystal B. Bright

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Blurb:

Worse than a one-hit wonder, Tassia Hogan is a one-line wonder. Infamous for a memorable, extremely provocative verse, her music career is going nowhere. Finding a decent man to date has also proven fruitless . . . they all think sheโ€™s as wanton as those lyrics. But now her label is offering Tassia the chance to shineโ€”with a catch. The album is duets. Her partner is a Country Western singer. And heโ€™s just as reluctant to agree as she is.

Hyde Love has been in the music business since he was eleven, and heโ€™s becoming more and more disenchanted with it. Collaborating on an album seems great in theory, but Tassia is an R&B singer. Melding their sounds and personalities will be difficultโ€”though not as tough as keeping things strictly business. Getting involved with his partner could prove career-wrecking, yet discovering the real Tassia could be earth-shattering.

Excerpt:

Chapter 1

Tassia Hogan sat in a makeshift directorโ€™s chair that reminded her of the chairs on the set of the TV show she had done as a pre-teen called the Ratty Ratโ€™s Fun Crew. Fifteen years later and she still liked to sit in the taut cloth seat with her leg draped across the arm, leaned back against the stretched black fabric. Anything that relaxed her before a show fit the bill right now.

Since she sat backstage with Aaronโ€™s back-up singers and dancers, she felt comfortable with this group. She wore black shorts along with her black leather bra until showtime. Then she would swap the shorts for a matching black leather skirt and heels that would kill her feet as she danced around in them for over an hour on stage. Thankfully, tonight would be the last show on the tour.

The limber dancers all stretched in different corners of the room. Even in a room far away from the main arena area, Tassia heard the crowds all chanting Aaronโ€™s name, which sucked for the opening act on stage at the moment. She could relate. Tassia knew full well that the sold-out arena full of people would have their full, undivided attention on the headliner, Aaron. She just happened to sing a hook on his latest hit song. One day she would gain some respect and have fans of her own. Now that enough time had been put between her and that kidsโ€™ show, she could start making a name for herself.

โ€œOh, shit.โ€

Tassia rarely gave her attention to the generally foul-mouthed crew that surrounded her.

Most times the backstage area sounded more like a teenager-filled locker room than a room full of professionals working for one of the highest-paid rappers in the game. When she heard the expletive she didnโ€™t flinch. Like she did at ten years old when she had worked on the show, she swung her leg back and forth. Then she heard her name.

โ€œI canโ€™t believe they still play this show.โ€

The hairs stood on the back of Tassiaโ€™s neck as she dared to bring her attention to the wide-screen TV that hung on the wall. It didnโ€™t take her long to notice the taped opening to Ratty Ratโ€™s Fun Crew where she and five other children danced around a man dressed in a rat costume.

A rat. Why the hell did it have to be a rat of all things?

โ€œAww, Tassia, you were so cute.โ€ A female dancer put her hand to her chest.

โ€œYeah, look at those pigtails.โ€ A back-up singer pointed to the screen.

Tassia didnโ€™t need to look. She knew what she looked like. For a year, the show pressed her natural hair using a blow dryer and a hot comb so that she could achieve her straight-hair look. With all the dancing she did on the show, by the end of the day, the sweat that had poured from her reverted her hair back to its naturally wavy pattern.

Thankfully with wigs now, she didnโ€™t worry about her hair, still in its natural state. Pretty soon she would see a stylist to get cornrows in her hair to get ready for her vacation. Fuss-free hair on a drama-free vacation.

Although she fought hard to avoid looking at the screen, her gaze fell on one of her kiddie co-stars. Tassia remembered Hyde Love being shy and quiet.

As though a back-up singer had read her thoughts, the woman said, โ€œI canโ€™t believe that chubby kid turned out to be the biggest star out there.โ€

She turned to Tassia, who now had to bring her leg down and squeeze them together when that familiar school-girl crush returned. โ€œDid you know he would blow up like he has?โ€

Tassia shook her head. โ€œWe were kids. We didnโ€™t know what would happen in the future.โ€

Yes, she wouldnโ€™t have known that this man would stab her in the back, not once, but twice. It was too bad because at one time, she completely thought the world of him.

FTC Disclaimer

I have received ARCs of books free from NetGalley (and many moons ago from BookTrib.com) to review but the majority of the stories are either bought by me or provided for free from the publisher, author, or PR company. The opinions I share are my own and in no way are influenced by an author or publisher. There is no promise of a positive review by any party and there is no additional compensation. Unless otherwise noted, I am not affiliated with any contest or other event mentioned on this blog and I do not receive a paid endorsement for any post.
