Bad Pucking Influence, Book Review, Colorado Bulldogs series, Michele Lenard

Thor meets Tony Hawk in this comedic, low-angst/high spice MM romance about a serious hockey goalie who is drawn out of his shell by a bratty skateboarder, a dare involving cake, and a lesson in how to use joysticks-for video games of course.

Bad Pucking Influence

Colorado Bulldogsย #2

by Michele Lenard

Blurb:

On the surface, Iโ€™ve got it all. Iโ€™m the starting goalie and Captain of the Colorado Bulldogs hockey team. Iโ€™ve got more money than I know what to do with. I can count an entire team of elite athletes as my friends. And according to the pundits, Iโ€™m an eligible bachelor.

That’s the image everyone sees, but itโ€™s just a role I play. A part dictated by my career. I have to be just as perfect off the ice as I am on it since everything I do reflects on my team in some way or another. So, those questions I have about why I donโ€™t crave sexual contact the way my teammates doโ€“questions Iโ€™m afraid to ask with the world watchingโ€ฆ I decided a long time ago it didnโ€™t make sense to look for answers until after I retire.

Then I ran into him.

Tripp is loud, obnoxious, and full of confidence. Some people find his sass off-putting, but not me. I find it intriguing, and I admire his ability to be himself, consequences be damned. Apparently, I also admire the way he looks, since my eyes seem to linger on him longer than they should, and when he sets his sights on meโ€ฆ

Waiting for retirement to explore who I am seems like too big a sacrifice, so when Tripp offers to help me answer some of those questions about myself, I jump.

I’m tired of pretending to be Mr. Perfectโ€ฆ Tripp and his playboy antics might be just the thing I need to figure out who I am outside of hockey. The only problem is, everyoneโ€“including our mutual friendsโ€“see him as a bad pucking influence.

Bad Pucking Influence is a low-angst, high-spice MM romance featuring a hockey player and a brat, not a hockey book featuring a romance. Fans of bratty playboys and gentle giants will enjoy this light-hearted, steamy yet touching love story.

Excerpt:

Since I first saw Tripp at a team barbeque Xander dragged him to last summer, Iโ€™ve found myself noticing him more and more. In my defense, itโ€™s hard not to. Standing at six feet, with perfectly mussed bleached-blond hair and dark stubble thatโ€™s hard to miss since the contrast is so stark, itโ€™s the mischievous tilt of his lips that really captures my attention. I often find myself wondering whatโ€™s going on in his mind, particularly since heโ€™s a professional at giving people the shock-and-awe treatment. His antics amuse me more than they should, even when they involve silly excuses to measure my biceps with his hands.

Between his loud looks and even louder personality, he doesnโ€™t exactly fade into the background, and if Iโ€™m being honest, I find his brash nature freeing. I sort of like that heโ€™s become a bit of a regular fixture in our social circle. Whatโ€™s confusing to me is that itโ€™s not just his personality that catches my attention. His appearance fascinates me, especially now, with him skating around shirtless.

Tall and lean, every muscle is on display, showing off a smattering of tattoos that would otherwise be hidden. Theyโ€™re kind of mesmerizing to watch as they ripple under his skin. So is the youthful gleam in his eye. Itโ€™s not arousing exactly, but itโ€™s something. Something Iโ€™ve yet to put a label on, but I only seem to experience it around him. Which might mean sitting here watching him is a bad idea, at least until I sort out some of my confusion.

If only I could look away.

Review:

I liked the characters – Noah is a big, ol’ teddy bear and Tripp is as in-your-face as you can get – but there’s definitely something more lurking beneath the surface of both. We get an understanding of Noah’s pretty early on, and Tripp is definitely all in for helping him explore his sexuality, which means he also brings his own baggage into their situation. There’s a reason he’s not willing to get involved with people and it takes a while to share it with us. I don’t know that everyone is willing to put in the time needed to go from casual sex to Tripp opening up & spilling all his secrets but I found it a satisfying resolution to their relationship.

While it isn’t necessary to have read the first book, Bad Pucking Timing, I do think it will help with how quickly Noah and Tripp fall into a sexual relationship together. It also gives a better look at the fun, & supportive, side of Tripp and how he & Noah have gotten to this point. While the beginning is oh-so-steamy, I think that foundation may be needed so that Tripp’s bratty side is better understood and to help readers get through the slower transition of their relationship.

Book Review, Elmwood Stories series, Lane Hayes, Next Season

Next Season

The Elmwood Stories, Book 2

by Lane Hayes

Blurb:

The injured hockey player and the grumpy chefโ€ฆ

Riley

My time playing pro hockey will be up soon. I can feel it. And Iโ€™ve heard the rumors: heโ€™s too old, heโ€™s had too many injuries, heโ€™s lost his edge. I donโ€™t want to admit it, but they could be right. Next season might be my last.

Or this season. Because of course, this is when the universe decides I need another concussion. Itโ€™s a doozy tooโ€”the kind thatโ€™s going to keep me off skates for a while.

Which is how I end up in a small New England town in the middle of nowhere Vermont, eating every meal at a diner where a grumpy chef from Quebec makes haute cuisineโ€ฆand burgers. Jean-Claude is funny and charming andโ€”

Okay, I have a crush on a gay man.

This is a new one.

Jean-Claude

Confused straight men are entertaining. But Riley isโ€ฆfascinating, sexy, and curiously vulnerable. His injury has rocked his confidence a bit, so perhaps heโ€™s in need of a friend. Any friend. Even moi.

Iโ€™m an unlikely choice, but maybe he just likes my tuna salad.

Noโ€ฆI think itโ€™s me.

And though Iโ€™m happy to help him explore his bisexual curious side, I have career concerns of my own. See, the things I love most about Elmwood seem shaky and uncertain, but not Riley. Heโ€™s solid and genuine. Suddenly, this temporary secret liaison feels more real than anything in my life.

I need more than this season. I want it all. With Riley.

Next Season is an MM bisexual-awakening romance featuring a grumpy chef, an injured hockey player, and a big HEA in a small town where anything can happen.

Excerpt:

Riley shook his wrist and stole a glance my way. โ€œYou donโ€™t strike me as the type who likes to follow rules.โ€

โ€œNot true. Religion was a big part of my life when I was a child. Church on Sundays and high holidays, Catholic school. I always did well with structure and discipline. Hockey gave me that too. The practicing, the camaraderieโ€ฆthe game is always bigger than one player, but your contribution matters. Itโ€™s like that in a kitchen too. Everyone has a role to play, and weโ€™re better at it when we work as a team. Rules are good, butโ€ฆโ€ I pulled the dough from him and grinned. โ€œItโ€™s fun to break them.โ€

He snickered, diligently pushing and folding the dough. โ€œUh-huh. Now, me? I was a quintessential rule follower. Even after I left home, I made my own rules aboutโ€ฆeverything in my life. Food restrictions, daily exercise, sleep, alcoholโ€ฆI even had a no masturbation rule twenty-four hours before a game.โ€

I wrinkled my nose in distaste. โ€œIs this some kind of testosterone bullshit?โ€

He blushed, and it was so fucking cute I couldnโ€™t resist looping my arm around his waist, nuzzling his neck, and pressing kisses behind his ear.

โ€œCut it out.โ€ He wriggled in my arms, then leaned against me. โ€œTo be honest, I got carried away with the rules. I have a mild obsessive-compulsive streak, and Iโ€™m hard on myself. I was like this as a kid tooโ€”always trying to be the best and do the best. Itโ€™s fucking exhausting.โ€

โ€œI bet. I canโ€™t relate. I was terrible.โ€ I sighed. โ€œMy poor parents. I was the kid who fell asleep in church, ditched school to smoke with my hooligan friends, and the D-man who showed much promise, but spent far too much time in the penalty box for using my fists instead of my brains. Itโ€™s not that I didnโ€™t want to follow rules, but some of them seemed pointless to me.โ€

โ€œYeah, that sounds more like you.โ€

โ€œOui. I had too much energy or not enough. I never got the balance right until I worked in a kitchen and found out the hard way that everything I touched would turn to shit if I didnโ€™t pay attention. So I learned to be patient and put in the work. And because of that, I donโ€™t have to cross my fingers or double-check my recipes. I know this bread will be amazingโ€ฆunless you fucked it up somehow.โ€

Riley swatted my ass with a dish towel. โ€œI made it better. Admit it.โ€

โ€œWe shall see.โ€

Review:

I loved this story. It’s low angst, so sweet, and I didn’t even mind that 90% of it is just the two of them together (although seeing JC interact with others is a hoot and a half). It is a joy getting to know all of JC’s secrets as Riley gets him to open up bit by bit. He had a few forks in the road that helped make him into the grumpy, caring, funny man he is today.

Riley is impatient to get back on the ice, but JC proves to be a good distraction. Maybe too good as Riley starts to realize that his feelings are turning a direction he didn’t anticipate. I didn’t mind that Hayes lets them explore this new side to Riley without a lot of drama. He just goes with the flow, evaluating his comfort level every step of the way, and JC’s calm support definitely helps as things get steadily more steamy.

When I read You, Again I felt that any issues with the book were squarely on me and I was right. With this follow up book Hayes reminds me what I like so much about her stories. Her MCs are great together – I love JC’s playfully gruff personality and Riley is a superstitious mess as he faces his future & his feelings for JC. Together, they are loving, so supportive, and they made me very happy. I’m excited that there’s a holiday story coming soon because I’m ready to get back to Elmwood.

Review:

Y’all, Piper Rayne is one of those one click authors for me. It doesn’t matter what their book is about, and there have been some where the blurb made me go ehhh, they have never let me down. Their characters are always interesting and detailed, the plot is engrossing, and the love story leaves me with a happy smile.

Claus and Effect is no different, full of hijinks and feels in equal measure. I enjoyed the insta-hate that these two have going. The dual POV makes it a little bit easier to be OK with their initial level of snark (I think it’s easy to get heavy-handed with it and move into rude & unattractive instead of tension hiding something more type thing). As they are forced into one unexpected, and often madcap, situation after another, forcing them to get to know each other better, their feelings start to morph into something a bit more positive. And before they can make it to Portland, they realize that maybe they were wrong about a whole lot of things.

I’ll admit I didn’t see the third act trouble coming. And I’m not sure I 100% followed Tre’s issues, at least not to the extent that they come into play here. But it made for an extra quirky ending ๐Ÿ™‚ There’s not a lot of steam here, in case that’s your thing, but I didn’t mind at all. It was all about the journey, and what a wacky & fun journey it was. Keep it coming Piper Rayne!

London Ambrose is a spoiled billionaireโ€™s daughter. And now sheโ€™s the new co-owner of the Seattle football team, but that doesnโ€™t mean that she knows diddly squat about football.

Thereโ€™s nothing I hate more than having someone micromanaging me, shadowing my every move, and giving me their two cents on Every. Little. Thing. as I coach MY defensive line.

Now, Iโ€™m suddenly in a fake relationship, pretending to date the gorgeous billionaire and learning so many surprising things about this captivating woman that I just canโ€™t seem to stay away from her.

Review:

This is the first by this author for me but I see her name everywhere and I know that she’s well loved by readers so I decided to take a chance on Drew’s book. Joining a series 5 books in wasn’t an issue. There are a lot of characters (and after this I’m looking forward to adding all of their books to my TBR pile) but the author made sure that new readers are able to keep up with them easily. So, if this is your first too I think you’ll be OK.

This book got a few middle of the road reviews because the story didn’t quite live up to the blurb and that was something I noticed as well. It’s not like Drew actively dislikes London, he just doesn’t think that she takes her ownership duties seriously, but as he gets to know her his opinion quickly changes. And their fake dating story line lasts all of about 10 pages so people who are looking for either an enemies-to-lovers or fake dating trope are going to be a little disappointed.

Instead we get a feel-good, slow burn, realistic romance. We’re there as London and Drew get to know each other better, act on their attraction, and let their feelings grow. It’s all sorts of heart-warming, and Drew’s relationship with London’s son is just the sweetest. I loved how serious London takes being a mom and the amazing way that she handles being a pillar of the community. She’s smart and dedicated, enjoys the benefits of her position but also is down-to-earth and real. And Drew isn’t afraid to let her shine. But he’s also there to support her when she needs it, which is awesome. If all her books have such charming characters I’m definitely looking forward to working my way thru Proby’s back list and seeing what she has coming up next.

His Wicked Ways

The Wickeds: Dark Knights at Bayside

by Melissa Foster

Releasing Nov 8, 2023

World Literary Press

Blurb:

Blaine Wicked is used to women doing as he says in and out of the bedroom. Find out happens when he falls for the one woman who wonโ€™t submit to his wicked ways in the newest insanely sexy, deeply emotional, and laugh-out-loud funny standalone romance by New York Times bestselling author Melissa Foster.

Blaine Wicked can spot trouble a mile away. As the eldest of five and raised in a Dark Knights biker family, he has always been a protector. Rescuing a stripper from a bad situation comes with the territory, regardless of the hell the mouthy, slightly awkward, and seriously hot leggy blonde gives him for it. Sheโ€™s far too innocent to bend to his wicked ways, but the more he learns about her, the harder it is for him to walk away.

Forensic scientist Reese Wilder never imagined herself as the entertainment at a bachelor party, but sheโ€™d do anything to keep food on the table for her teenage sister. With their mess of a mother in rehabโ€”Third timeโ€™s a charm, right?โ€”Reese is stuck paying off their motherโ€™s debt to a dealer and trying to make ends meet. Reese has had it rough, and she knows better than to rely on anyone for help, much less a pushy biker with piercing blue eyes who probably has dozens of women at his beck and call.

The more flames Reese throws, the more determined Blaine is to walk through them. The closer he gets, the hotter they burnโ€”and the more curious she becomes. But Blaine Wicked has the power to torch Reeseโ€™s walls to embers, and with her sisterโ€™s well-being at stake, thatโ€™s a risk she canโ€™t afford to take.

Review:

When I first started this one, and Blaine started to show his more dominant side, I wasn’t sure I was going to be ok with him. Not because I’m opposed to that take charge, demanding type but there was just something about his attitude that didn’t sit right. He seemed a little too inflexible and uncaring about his partner. He talked about how he made sure they were ok with things but … I don’t know. His attitude was just off.

Then Reese showed that she wasn’t going to let him get away with it. He made demands of her but she made her demands as well and she wasn’t going to let him get away with not giving her what she needed. There’s definitely a submissive thing going on with her but it’s also a give & take relationship on both sides. Which, to me, seems much more healthy than what I was afraid we were going to have going it.

I also appreciated that it wasn’t an overly bumpy ride emotionally. They had their issues but they worked thru them and moved on. I enjoyed the relationship that Blaine built with both Reese and her sister, providing them both with the support and care that they needed. And that Reese was there to help him come to terms with his own issues and look a little more closely about why he does the things he does.

As is to be expected with a Whiskey man, when they meet the one they fall and fall fast. And usually take a little convincing to realize it ๐Ÿ™‚ But once they do, *whew*, especially since it takes a strong woman, one willing to stand up to him when he needs it, to win that Whiskey heart. His Whiskey Ways is Foster’s trademark (and delicious) blend of sweet and oh-so-steamy, heart and sass, humor and love.

Like always, the Whiskeys show that they are all heart under gruff, tattooed exteriors. They live big and love big, protecting those that need it and supporting everyone in their ever expanding circle. Showing us that family is more than just the ones you share blood with.

If you are new to Foster’s world, this is a good place to start. There’s a little bleed over from The Wicked Truth (and a lot of history & characters as always) but this one does a pretty decent job of standing on its own.

Hell of an Angel

Unlocking His Heartย #2

by Christi Barth

Blurb:

Raised in Hell. Living in Buffalo. And on the verge of accidentally destroying both realmsโ€ฆ

Dark angel and actuary Evangeline Thayer hates taking unnecessary risks, but she knows becoming human will be worth it. All the creatures in Hell have bullied her about her negligible โ€˜powerโ€™ her whole life. And donโ€™t get her started on why she has wings if she canโ€™t even fly?!? She just needs a teensy bit of help with removing her powerโ€ฆwhich is where a very hot, very flirty, and absolutely infuriating Nephilim comes in.

Half-angel Gideon Durand has been fighting demons a long time, but heโ€™s never heard of a dark angel. Least of all one this gorgeous, stubborn, and with the power to completely nullify evil. Maybe in Hell, thatโ€™s a weaknessโ€”but with an unknown evil on the loose and murdering Nephilim?โ€”thatโ€™s a damned useful skill. So Gideon strikes a deal with Evangeline: heโ€™ll scratch her wingsโ€ฆif sheโ€™ll scratch his.

Now good and evil areโ€”temporarilyโ€”working together. And might even be having steamy funโ€ฆif it wasnโ€™t for a rather inconvenient threat trying to unleash the apocalypse, once and for all.

Each book in the Unlocking His Heart series is STANDALONE:
* Imperfect Angel
* Hell of an Angel

*****

Review:

This book is said to be a standalone and I’ll have to disagree. While it is an individual romance for Gideon and Eva, and she does have her own adventure as the main plot of the story, it does directly tie into Maisy & Rhys from the first book and will be a part of the next story as well. As an interconnected book, readers should not start here to truly enjoy it. (I think that will help with a decent amount of the negative reviews.)

As a returning reader, I enjoyed getting to continue in this intriguing world that Barth has created – full of mythical creatures and a battle between good & evil. Her three heroes are great together, thru a shared traumatic past they have created a family. One that is slowly expanding as they meet and fall in love with strong women. It’s fun seeing these big, tough soldiers fall in love and learn to open up & share their lives with more than just each other.

Of the three, Gideon is the more outgoing and flirty. He’s working his way through the female population of both the normal and supernatural world … until he comes face to face with one that is not impressed by his charm. Some are not going to enjoy his attitude, but having gotten to know him before and then having his history laid out in this story it definitely becomes a lot more understandable.

Eva grew up as an entity of good in hell, which made her childhood … difficult. All she’s wanted is to get out and become normal, and now is her chance. She just needs to work with Gideon and the other Nephilim but something more is going on than they would ever have guessed. Add in an unwanted attraction to the playboy she’s been paired with, who has more going on than she would have ever guessed, and things quickly become very complicated

These guys have not had it easy (especially Zavier – and I cannot wait for his story!) but they still have big hearts and a deep seated need to protect. It makes for fun interactions as they start to realize that those big hearts have been stolen by spunky women with smarts, attitude, and guts. (Seriously, I cannot wait to get the last book!) It all happens in a world filled with angels & demons, mythical creatures, and Lucifer as the most fabulous, and proud, grandfather. I’m not 100% on my religion & mythology but I think that Barth does a good job of creating a complicated world full of all sorts of interesting creatures. And I can’t wait to see how she wraps it up. (Did I say that already? Well, I can’t.)

Hot Mess Summer

A fun and sexy standalone romantic comedy

by Melissa Foster

Releasing Oct 17, 2023

Montlake Romance

Blurb:

From the New York Times bestselling author Melissa Foster comes a funny, sexy romantic comedy featuring a twice-divorced, stressed-out romance writer who finds out that sometimes true love can be a hot mess.

Who buys a cottage in a New England fishing village on a whim? A stressed-out, twice-divorced romance writer and single mother looking for a fresh start, thatโ€™s who. Despite what my besties say about my three-year dry spell, Iโ€™m not looking for a man. Or drama. Or sex. Iโ€™ve got enough on my plate with writerโ€™s block and a daughter who refuses to grow up. Community. Thatโ€™s what I need. Unfortunately, it seems the universe has other ideas. Either Chatemup, Massachusetts, has a serious shortage of single women, or Iโ€™ve become a hot mess magnet for the male species.

At least Iโ€™ve found one funny, good-hearted friend: fish peddler Declan Miller, my brainstorming adventure buddy who stirs my creative juices. Iโ€™m his Writer Girl. Heโ€™s my Dimple Dude. Just scruffy, granite-chested, deep-voiced, ex-military brawn who happens to beโ€”oh, Nicole, what are you doing to yourself?โ€”stoking a long-neglected fire without even trying.

A self-confessed hot mess, divorced single dad Declan is too old for relationship games. Not interested. Same here. So why do I keep thinking about him? Preferably naked. Because Iโ€™m a hot mess, too? At least heโ€™s inspiring me to write. If only real life were like one of my novels. At least then Iโ€™d have a better idea of how this was going to end.

Hot Mess Summer is published by Montlake Romance and will be available in paperback and audio formats at all book retailers, and exclusively in digital format for Kindle and Kindle apps. Download a free Kindle reading app here: http://bit.ly/FreeKindle_App1

Review:

I am always so happy to get my hands on a new book by Melissa Foster. Her characters are invariably engaging and her writing can turn something simple into a story that draws you in & won’t let go. The fact that this one focuses on an older hero and heroine, a couple that are grown but not done growing, is refreshing. And I was delighted by their journey from being new friends into more.

Both Declan and Nicole are moving into a new phase of their lives – figuring out where they fit with their friends and family, and learning what they want for themselves going forward. The way they do this together, going on delightful adventures, getting closer, and growing as people is just a fun read.

There’s very little drama and angst here, instead it’s a story about self discovery filled with delightful characters, humor, and small town charm. Oh, and a good amount of heat, of course.

Risky Game

Nashville Steel series

by Stacey Lynn

Blurb:

Romance between them is strictly off-limits, but forbidden attraction has never felt so irresistibleโ€ฆIโ€™m playing a risky gameโ€ฆ

Iโ€™m the brand new coach of the current Super Bowl Champions. If that isnโ€™t hard enough, Iโ€™m also one of the youngest coaches in the league.

Coupled with a recently finalized divorce and the goal to take the team and the city of Nashville’s fans by storm, my ex throws me for a loop when she says sheโ€™s sending our daughter to me so she can take an extended three-month vacation.

Donโ€™t get me wrong, I love my little girl more than anything but suddenly becoming a full-time single dad and the Steeleโ€™s new coach rocks the turf beneath my feet. I need some help and I need it fast.

Enter Ruby Moore.

The answer to my prayers. Sheโ€™s looking for a new start, is great with kids and is the perfect set of eyes to watch my daughter when Iโ€™m not around.

The problem? I think she is perfect for me too.

The other problem? Sheโ€™s not only my nanny, but sheโ€™s also the younger sister of a guy Iโ€™m tasked with leading. Sheโ€™s way too young and sweet for me and the way she loves Amelia makes my heart melt. I donโ€™t expect her perfume to remind me of lazy beach days and for her smiles to become a craving I canโ€™t live without. But I canโ€™t stop thinking about her. Fleeting glances turn into deeper conversations and even more carnal nights.

Soon, sheโ€™s a forbidden addiction I canโ€™t quit.

I know I’m playing a Risky Game, but can I keep the woman I’ve fallen in love with, while still maintaining the respect of the team Iโ€™m trying to lead to another Championship?

Review:

I’m back & forth on age gap romances and I’m not always sure what makes them work. I feel like Logan is right to be a little concerned about their relationship – mostly because of his connection to her brother and the bad optics. But Ruby is smart, with a good head on her shoulders. Her life up to this point hasn’t been all that easy and I feel like that helps her be more mature for her age.

I’m also a little conflicted on their steamy times. I mean, I’m not one to kink shame (and I’ll be honest for all the wide variety of spice I read, I’m personally pretty vanilla) but I think because there is such an emphasis on their age difference that it could also parlay into a power balance issue. Don’t get me wrong, it is definitely HAWT and I love that they both have a chance to explore that side of themselves together. I just wonder a little about adding that to a story when there was already an imbalance in their relationship.

OK, so that’s the less than positive, but I will say overall I enjoyed the crap out of this book. Lynn does a fantastic job of giving us characters to pull for – Logan is struggling with his new, high-pressure job and trying to figure out how to take care of his daughter in his limited free time. It’s obvious that he loves Amelia but it’s a complication that he didn’t need right now. Throw in his growing desire for his new (young) nanny and it doesn’t take him long to crack. And crack beautifully he does ๐Ÿ™‚ While I can worry about their dynamic in a real world situation, I can also find it hot as all get out in a fictional one . . . bossy, growly, and sexy, OH MY.

Ruby is running from a heartbreak back home and taking a little time to get her feet back under her. I can appreciate her need to do it on her own, especially with the wonderful relationship she has with her brother & his family. It would be super easy to let him fix it all. But that self-reliance has her in Logan’s sphere, which leads to new trouble as she struggles to connect with his daughter while also having to resist the oh-so-sexy single dad. (I’m impressed she lasts as long as she does, honestly.)

With her sassy mouth, independent personality, and the care she puts into winning over his daughter, it’s harder and harder for Logan to resist Ruby the more time they spend together. There’s the typical third act troubles, but I appreciate how both of them recognize the roll they play in it. And definitely take advantage of the opportunity to make up after a fight … *whew*

Steamy, humorous, and full of feels, Risky Game was a fast read and a great addition to the Nashville Steel series.

(Part of a series but can be read as a stand alone.)

Life After Love

Calston Cove Book One

by JJ Harper

Blurb:

All he wanted was a new life, not a new love.

Merrick

Merrick has the perfect life: a husband, a baby, and a great future ahead of him. Until all that is ripped away, and heโ€™s left alone with his daughter. After two years, he knows itโ€™s time to move on. To find a new life for him and Willow. It comes in the shape of a derelict mill house nestled in the hills above a Devon seaside town.

Drew

When Drew loses the chance to buy and restore the house heโ€™s loved all his life, the last thing he wants to do is renovate it for the mysterious new resident. But something about Merrick Green intrigues him, and he feels compelled to lift the heaviness surrounding him. The fact that Merrickโ€™s daughter seems to have taken an instant infatuation with Drew makes it easier.

As the two men become friends, Merrick battles with his attraction to Drew. How can he be interested in the ruggedly handsome when heโ€™s still in love with Josh?

Letting go of the past is hard, but with Drew by his side, he finds a way forward.

Life After Love is a sweet small-town, opposites-attract, hurt/comfort romance with low angst and a sweet little girl that everyone falls in love with.

Warning: The book deals with the loss of a loved one.

Excerpt:

As I approach my truck, a man is looking at it. No, heโ€™s taking a photograph. โ€œCan I help you?โ€ I put my toolbox into the open flat bed.

The man blushes and takes a step back. โ€œOh, is this your truck? Iโ€™m sorry. I wanted to get a photo of your contact details. Iโ€™m looking for a building contractor.โ€

He must be the latest resident in our small beachside town. The new owner of the Mill House. Heโ€™s incredibly good looking. Iโ€™d say around my age, thirty-five. About the same height as me at five eleven and has eyes the colour of soft, faded denim. His hair is short at the sides, but with honey-blond curls on top, which I envy. My hair is straight and long enough to tie up. I should get it cut. The amount of dust, plaster and sawdust is a bloody nightmare to wash out every night.

I pull a notebook out of the side pocket on my shorts and the pencil from behind my ear. โ€œIโ€™m sure I can do that for you. What sort of work?โ€

โ€œUm, itโ€™s pretty much everything. The house is a bit of a wreck. Iโ€™d hoped to do some of it myself, but I know thatโ€™s out of my abilities. I donโ€™t know if itโ€™s something youโ€™re interested in doing?โ€

I get the feeling the guy is overloaded with things that need immediate action and has got himself lost in the process. โ€œWhy donโ€™t you show me? Iโ€™ve got nothing else planned for the day.โ€

He lets out a sigh. โ€œThat would be so good. Itโ€™s Mill House. Do you know it?โ€

I smile. My suspicions this is the new guy were right. โ€œI do. I was born and bred in this town. I can follow you there if youโ€™d like?โ€

โ€œOkay, thank you so much. See you in a few.โ€

I wait until heโ€™s in his car, then start the engine on mine. His smart, new, not-cheap-at-all BMW is something else for the gossips to talk about. Handsome, single, and seemingly rich. Melanie will be waving her knickers on a pole in front of him in the blink of her false eyelashes.

The drive takes ten minutes, winding through the town and up parallel to the river that runs down to the sea. The Mill House still has the original water wheel. Although the river has been diverted away from the property, itโ€™s still an impressive feature of the house.

I park next to him and climb out. He opens the back door of the coupรฉ and lifts a small sleeping child from her seat. He wipes her hair, which is the same colour as his, from her forehead and kisses her gently. A sweet, loving moment that makes my heart swell. The obvious love for the child is in his every gesture and expression.

He turns to me. โ€œThis is my daughter, Willow. Iโ€™m Merrick Green.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m Drew Roberts, but you probably guessed that from the signage.โ€

โ€œOh, yes, well, itโ€™s nice to meet you.โ€ Heโ€™s flustered as he juggles the sleeping toddler to shake my hand.

He gestures with his head. โ€œWelcome to my home. Or what will be my home. Come on in.โ€

I follow him up the stone steps to the solid oak door.

He pushes the door open. โ€œItโ€™s a bit of a mess. Please be careful where you walk.โ€

โ€œThanks for the heads-up.โ€ I step in, holding back my smile. I used to come here a lot when I was a kid. Itโ€™s not as bad as I remembered.

I wait in the hallway as he places the sleeping child on a sheet partly covering an old mulberry velvet sofa that has been here forever.

โ€œI havenโ€™t been in here for years,โ€ I say when Merrick walks back out.

Surprise flashes in his eyes. โ€œYou know the house?โ€

I chuckle. โ€œEveryone whoโ€™s grown up here has played around in this house. Not that we were supposed to, but kids will be kids. School-leaving parties took place here, and teenagers just wanting to hang out would come here. Itโ€™s about time someone came and loved it again. Itโ€™s a good place to live and raise a family, Merrick.โ€

A flash of pain rocks over his face, and he closes his eyes as he takes a deep breath.

โ€œHey, are you okay? Iโ€™m sorry if I said the wrong thing.โ€

โ€œNo, itโ€™s fine. Can I get you a drink? Iโ€™ve got some bottled water or some juice. Then we can walk around, and Iโ€™ll show you what needs your attention as soon as you can.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m good, and is it just the urgent work you want me to do, or are you looking for a quote for all the renovations? Who else have you spoken to?โ€

โ€œNo one else. Iโ€™ve only been here a couple of days.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re not staying in the house now, are you? I donโ€™t think itโ€™s safe.โ€

He looks at the cracked walls and sagging ceilings and chuckles. โ€œNo, Iโ€™m staying in a hotel for now. But if you could give me a quote for the initial work, we can discuss the rest of the work when I have the plans back.โ€

I scratch my chin. โ€œYouโ€™re putting a lot of faith into a man youโ€™ve just met.โ€

โ€œI asked around. You were the first name mentioned. Plus, you look like a decent guy.โ€ Finally, he gives me a small smile.

โ€œWhen does your wife arrive?โ€

*****

Review:

I’m amused that the things I liked the most about this story are the things that have it getting some lower * reviews. I mean I get that everyone has their own preferences (there’re lots of romances that are loved that I didn’t even finish) but it’s just funny that those are specifically what is called out ๐Ÿ™‚

Life After Love is definitely slow burn and low angst, with very little conflict between the two main characters. Instead it’s about Merrick finally starting to get over the death of his husband and choosing to move on with his life. Meeting, and falling in love, with Drew is definitely not something he expected but maybe something he needed. (The little encouragements from Josh are touching and the push that he needs at the right time.)

I enjoyed both Drew and Merrick as characters. They are good-hearted and sweet together, making me pull for them from the first page. Merrick has a lot he needs to face, just getting up was hard for a long time after Josh died, but a change of scenery and new friends are definitely helping. Drew shows a lot of patience and understanding as he gets to know Merrick and his daughter (who is just the sweetest). It’s easy to see why Merrick opens up to him and gives him his trust & eventually his heart.

The supporting characters are good for Merrick as well. From Drew’s meddling sister and her friend, to Luke and Benny at the cafe, everyone is welcoming to the little family and there for both Drew & Merrick when they need it. Definitely need to see more of Merrick’s sister and best friend. Both are good eggs, full of heart and support. And I’m hoping that Harper gives us more of Josh’s brother. We didn’t get to know him well but he seemed like a stand up guy who’s hurting as well. Drew’s friend definitely needs a resolution … ok, so there’s a lot of opportunity here. I hope you have big plans Harper!

This is a new author for me and obviously I’m looking forward to finding out what’s in store for us next.

We Could Do This Forever

We Could Do This #1

by Emerson Beckett

Blurb:

Preston James did things to me. Things that had me wanting more of him and his dirty mouth, even though I knew better. Things that made my heart race. Things that made me come to realize there was more to my bossโ€™s best friend than met the eye.

Nick Reed

As one of the bartenders at Alejandroโ€™s Bar, Iโ€™ve seen it all. Iโ€™ve even watched my friends, Christian and Cooper, both find the loves of their life. Six years after breaking up with my college boyfriend, Iโ€™m convinced thatโ€™s not the life Iโ€™m supposed to have until forty-five-year-old Preston James makes me the target of his relentless sexy stares and his straight-forward, dirty propositions.

Maybe being the object of his desire wouldnโ€™t be so bad.

Preston James

The first time I laid eyes on Nicholas Reed, I knew I had to have him. There was something about my best friendโ€™s bartender that captivated me. And I always got my way. But this twenty-eight-year-old grad student has me jumping through all kinds of hoops to get his attention. Thereโ€™s nothing I wonโ€™t do to prove to him Iโ€™m exactly what he needs. Iโ€™m relentless like that and I wonโ€™t stop until heโ€™s mine.

We Could Do This Forever is the first book in the We Could Do This Duet and is an MM Bisexual Romance. Additional tropes: Age Gap; Mutual Pining; Bossโ€™s Best Friend; Secretly Wealthy; Humor.

Review:

The dance these two go thru getting together provided quite a few entertaining moments. Drunk Preston laying out everything he thinks and feels for everyone is downright hilarious and I can’t blame Nick for finding him irresistible. Once they finally give in, Preston is an attentive and giving boyfriend, taking care of Nick and showing him as much as telling him how much he cares.

But while I liked Nick and Preston’s story overall, there were a few issues. Mainly that these two REALLY need to work on their communication skills. A good portion of the beginning of the book is spent with them giving each other googly eyes, but not going anywhere because they won’t have an actual conversation. Throw in that once they do get together there’s a lot of suggestion about things but no talking and when something that Nick knows needs to be talked about comes up he … avoids it. Does he think it’s just going to go away? And then there’s the whole third act breakup and Preston, because of his additional years of maturity, works thru it like a grownup, right? Uh, no. He handles it about as well as he did the actual conflict, which was not well. At all. I liked the two of them together, but sheesh there were moments.

I’ve enjoyed pretty much everything that I’ve read from Beckett and I’m definitely looking forward to Alejandro’s story to complete this duet. I’m also really hoping that introducing Nick’s friend Evan means that we’re going to get some new football players in San Diego. Please!
