Excerpt:
Averyโs head shot up at the sound of a female voice calling her name.
โLori?โ
Oh, damnโฆ
When Lori was at their table, Avery detached from Liamโs side and stood for a hug. โWhat are you doing here? Whereโs Reed?โ
Lori eyed Liam while she answered the questions. โReedโs on his way down. Weโre going out to dinner. Wanted a drink first.โ
What were the chances of Lori excusing herself before Avery was forced to make an introduction?
Lori reached out a hand toward Liam. โIโm Lori.โ
Liam stood; a broad smile matched his broad chest. โLiam Holt.โ Once he released Loriโs hand, he pulled out a bar stool. โSit, we just ordered drinks.โ
Avery wanted to elbow his ribs.
Instead, she smiled.
Liam signaled for Nikki.
โLiam, huh? Avery hasnโt mentioned you.โ
He pulled Averyโs chair closer to his and waited for her to sit. โWe havenโt known each other long.โ
Lori sent a questioning look to Avery. Instead of adding to Liamโs explanation.
โIโve known Lori for a few years. We live in the same building.โ
โWhat do you do, Liam?โ
Small talk โฆ is that what this was going to be?
Lori signaled Reed when he walked in the door. โThis is my husband.โ
Avery laughed. โYou love saying that, donโt you?โ
Lori nodded.
โTheyโre newlyweds,โ Avery explained.
Once again Liam stood when Reed approached the table.
โLook who I found,โ Lori said.
Reed kissed Averyโs cheek. โI havenโt seen you here in a while.โ
โThatโs because you two never come up for air,โ Avery teased.
โThis is Liam โฆ Averyโs friend.โ Yeah, Lori wanted more details.
The men shook hands.
โHave I ever met one of your friends?โ he asked.
Avery glared. โSmooth, Reed โฆ really smooth.โ
Lori nudged her husbandโs arm. โStop teasing.โ She turned her focus on Liam. โAvery keeps her private life private.โ
Avery tried not to flinch when Liam placed a hand over hers. โIโve figured that out recently.โ
โHow did you two meet?โ Reed asked.
Avery said โthe gymโ at the same time Liam said โa bar.โ
Loriโs lawyer radar spiked. Avery saw it in her eyes. โThose two things are worlds apart.โ
She caught Liamโs hand and squeezed.
โThe first time I saw you was at Pugโs Bar. I approached you at the gym.โ
โI knew it. That was you at Pugโs. How did you figure out where I worked out?โ Sheโd been asking herself that question for over a week.
โThat wasnโt hard. Leslie had a gym bag.โ
โWhoโs Leslie?โ Lori asked.
Avery didnโt look away from Liam. โA friend. So your job at the gym wasnโt on accident?โ
โI might have approached Brenda about a side job so I could meet you.โ
Averyโs jaw dropped.
โWhoโs Brenda?โ Reed asked.
โThe owner of the gym,โ Avery and Liam said at the same time. โHow did you know I was there on Tuesday and Friday nights?โ She wasnโt sure if his actions were exciting or scary.
โAppointment book. Brendaโs office is always open.โ
โWait, wait, wait.โ Lori placed a hand between the two of theirs. โYou see Avery in a bar. You search out a location of her gym, follow her to it, get a job there, and now youโre both here having drinks?โ
Liam offered a brief, unapologetic nod.
Lori grabbed Averyโs hand. โHow well do you know this guy?โ
Avery liked the gleam in Liamโs eyes. โHeโs safe.โ
โWhat he just described is a little too close to stalking for my taste.โ
Reed placed a hand on Loriโs shoulder. โSimmer down, Counselor. If Liam had an ulterior motive, he wouldnโt have told us all that.โ
โI wanted to meet you,โ Liam said.
“Yeah, well, youโve met her.โ Lori wasnโt happy.
Nikki showed up with Averyโs and Liamโs drinks.
โMy usual, Nikki,โ Lori told her.
โHon, our reservations are in thirty minutes. Maybe we should go.โ
Lori looked at Reed like he was crazy. โWe arenโt leaving him with her. He could be a sociopath.”
Liam smiled, his eyes crinkling with amusement. โIโm not.โ
โThatโs what they all say.โ
Avery put a free hand in the air. โChill, Lori.โ
Avery realized that her other hand had somehow ended up back in Liamโs. His thumb stroked the underside of her wrist in a strangely calming way.
โDo you want a drink, Reed?โ Nikki was still standing there, watching the four of them.
โNo, thank you. Weโre leaving.โ
Lori pushed back her chair. โWeโre going to talk about this later,โ she warned Avery. โAnd you โฆ just so you know, Iโm an attorney, and my big, burly husband here is in private security. He has even bigger friends.โ
Liam reached into his back pocket and removed his wallet. From it, he pulled out what looked like a business card. โI have nothing to hide.โ
Lori glanced at it briefly before Reed snatched it from her fingertips. โCโmon. Letโs leave them to their date.โ
Liam stood again and shook Reedโs hand before he ushered Lori out of the bar.
โThat was intense.โ
โMy friends are protective.โ
โUnderstatement.โ
โYou really went through all that just to meet me?โ
Liam picked up his cocktail for the first time. โWorked, didnโt it?โ
Avery let loose his hand and lifted her glass to his. โYes, it did.โ
