Excerpt:

Averyโ€™s head shot up at the sound of a female voice calling her name.

โ€œLori?โ€

Oh, damnโ€ฆ

When Lori was at their table, Avery detached from Liamโ€™s side and stood for a hug. โ€œWhat are you doing here? Whereโ€™s Reed?โ€

Lori eyed Liam while she answered the questions. โ€œReedโ€™s on his way down. Weโ€™re going out to dinner. Wanted a drink first.โ€

What were the chances of Lori excusing herself before Avery was forced to make an introduction?

Lori reached out a hand toward Liam. โ€œIโ€™m Lori.โ€

Liam stood; a broad smile matched his broad chest. โ€œLiam Holt.โ€ Once he released Loriโ€™s hand, he pulled out a bar stool. โ€œSit, we just ordered drinks.โ€

Avery wanted to elbow his ribs.

Instead, she smiled.

Liam signaled for Nikki.

โ€œLiam, huh? Avery hasnโ€™t mentioned you.โ€

He pulled Averyโ€™s chair closer to his and waited for her to sit. โ€œWe havenโ€™t known each other long.โ€

Lori sent a questioning look to Avery. Instead of adding to Liamโ€™s explanation.

โ€œIโ€™ve known Lori for a few years. We live in the same building.โ€

โ€œWhat do you do, Liam?โ€

Small talk โ€ฆ is that what this was going to be?

Lori signaled Reed when he walked in the door. โ€œThis is my husband.โ€

Avery laughed. โ€œYou love saying that, donโ€™t you?โ€

Lori nodded.

โ€œTheyโ€™re newlyweds,โ€ Avery explained.

Once again Liam stood when Reed approached the table.

โ€œLook who I found,โ€ Lori said.

Reed kissed Averyโ€™s cheek. โ€œI havenโ€™t seen you here in a while.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s because you two never come up for air,โ€ Avery teased.

โ€œThis is Liam โ€ฆ Averyโ€™s friend.โ€ Yeah, Lori wanted more details.

The men shook hands.

โ€œHave I ever met one of your friends?โ€ he asked.

Avery glared. โ€œSmooth, Reed โ€ฆ really smooth.โ€

Lori nudged her husbandโ€™s arm. โ€œStop teasing.โ€ She turned her focus on Liam. โ€œAvery keeps her private life private.โ€

Avery tried not to flinch when Liam placed a hand over hers. โ€œIโ€™ve figured that out recently.โ€

โ€œHow did you two meet?โ€ Reed asked.

Avery said โ€œthe gymโ€ at the same time Liam said โ€œa bar.โ€

Loriโ€™s lawyer radar spiked. Avery saw it in her eyes. โ€œThose two things are worlds apart.โ€

She caught Liamโ€™s hand and squeezed.

โ€œThe first time I saw you was at Pugโ€™s Bar. I approached you at the gym.โ€

โ€œI knew it. That was you at Pugโ€™s. How did you figure out where I worked out?โ€ Sheโ€™d been asking herself that question for over a week.

โ€œThat wasnโ€™t hard. Leslie had a gym bag.โ€

โ€œWhoโ€™s Leslie?โ€ Lori asked.

Avery didnโ€™t look away from Liam. โ€œA friend. So your job at the gym wasnโ€™t on accident?โ€

โ€œI might have approached Brenda about a side job so I could meet you.โ€

Averyโ€™s jaw dropped.

โ€œWhoโ€™s Brenda?โ€ Reed asked.

โ€œThe owner of the gym,โ€ Avery and Liam said at the same time. โ€œHow did you know I was there on Tuesday and Friday nights?โ€ She wasnโ€™t sure if his actions were exciting or scary.

โ€œAppointment book. Brendaโ€™s office is always open.โ€

โ€œWait, wait, wait.โ€ Lori placed a hand between the two of theirs. โ€œYou see Avery in a bar. You search out a location of her gym, follow her to it, get a job there, and now youโ€™re both here having drinks?โ€

Liam offered a brief, unapologetic nod.

Lori grabbed Averyโ€™s hand. โ€œHow well do you know this guy?โ€

Avery liked the gleam in Liamโ€™s eyes. โ€œHeโ€™s safe.โ€

โ€œWhat he just described is a little too close to stalking for my taste.โ€

Reed placed a hand on Loriโ€™s shoulder. โ€œSimmer down, Counselor. If Liam had an ulterior motive, he wouldnโ€™t have told us all that.โ€

โ€œI wanted to meet you,โ€ Liam said.

“Yeah, well, youโ€™ve met her.โ€ Lori wasnโ€™t happy.

Nikki showed up with Averyโ€™s and Liamโ€™s drinks.

โ€œMy usual, Nikki,โ€ Lori told her.

โ€œHon, our reservations are in thirty minutes. Maybe we should go.โ€

Lori looked at Reed like he was crazy. โ€œWe arenโ€™t leaving him with her. He could be a sociopath.”

Liam smiled, his eyes crinkling with amusement. โ€œIโ€™m not.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s what they all say.โ€

Avery put a free hand in the air. โ€œChill, Lori.โ€

Avery realized that her other hand had somehow ended up back in Liamโ€™s. His thumb stroked the underside of her wrist in a strangely calming way.

โ€œDo you want a drink, Reed?โ€ Nikki was still standing there, watching the four of them.

โ€œNo, thank you. Weโ€™re leaving.โ€

Lori pushed back her chair. โ€œWeโ€™re going to talk about this later,โ€ she warned Avery. โ€œAnd you โ€ฆ just so you know, Iโ€™m an attorney, and my big, burly husband here is in private security. He has even bigger friends.โ€

Liam reached into his back pocket and removed his wallet. From it, he pulled out what looked like a business card. โ€œI have nothing to hide.โ€

Lori glanced at it briefly before Reed snatched it from her fingertips. โ€œCโ€™mon. Letโ€™s leave them to their date.โ€

Liam stood again and shook Reedโ€™s hand before he ushered Lori out of the bar.

โ€œThat was intense.โ€

โ€œMy friends are protective.โ€

โ€œUnderstatement.โ€

โ€œYou really went through all that just to meet me?โ€

Liam picked up his cocktail for the first time. โ€œWorked, didnโ€™t it?โ€

Avery let loose his hand and lifted her glass to his. โ€œYes, it did.โ€
