Sheโ€™ll love him forever . . . but he canโ€™t make her obey . . .

The war is over. Danger has passed. Cara Kayrs is healed after decades of illness and ready for a break.

Too bad her brooding, alpha vampire husband canโ€™t seem to change gears. In their twenty-five years together Talen Kayrs has learned to sense every shiver of her body, to ignite her desire with a word or a look. She would think he could learn sheโ€™s not some fragile damsel in distress.

But Talen is on edge, watching their backs, treating her like sheโ€™s made of glass. Like thereโ€™s something following them, a deadly threat that somehow none of their intelligence has uncovered. Itโ€™s enough to drive a woman crazy, and Talen has plenty of those tendencies already.

But whatโ€™s even more maddening is that he seems to be right . . .

Excerpt:

Talen couldnโ€™t shake the itch between his shoulder blades. Takingย his mate from the safety of their headquarters didnโ€™t set well withย him, and his muscles tensed in one long line.

โ€œWould you relax?โ€ she whispered from the passenger seat, herย head back on the leather and her eyes closed in pleased abandonment.

Her legs were up on the dash, her feet in little sandals thatย showed off bright pink toenails. Sexy and pink. Her long auburn hairย cascaded over her shoulders, and he fought the urge to tug on aย strand.

The woman was right. The war had ended, and he really did needย to relax. He watched the road outside and yet kept a close eye on hisย woman out of his peripheral vision. โ€œIt occurs to me that you thinkย things have changed.โ€

She opened her eyelids then . . . her eyes a stunning blue. โ€œHuh?โ€

He cleared his throat and made sure her seat belt was firmlyย around her small body. โ€œThe war is over, youโ€™re well, and you thinkย things are different.โ€ In fact, his woman hadnโ€™t been healthy sinceย right after theyโ€™d mated, and for years, heโ€™d been more than gentleย with her. At the thought that she was whole, finally, his heart startedย to thrum.

โ€œOf course things are different.โ€ She gestured out with one arm.

โ€œWeโ€™re on a road trip, without guards, without death hanging overย our heads.โ€ Her laugh was throaty and full. โ€œEmma and I are takingย a Vegas trip next month for a girlsโ€™ weekend.โ€

โ€œAbsolutely not.โ€

She gaped. โ€œI did not ask permission, Kayrs.โ€

He bit back a wince. Whenever Cara used his last name, he wasย about to end up in the doghouse. Yet she was no longer vulnerable orย weak, and he was finished placating her. โ€œMate? I have no intentionย of allowing you to go anywhere for a girlsโ€™ anything.โ€ The second theย word allow was out of his mouth, the tension in the car ratcheted upย several degrees.

โ€œOh, you did not,โ€ she sputtered, her eyes narrowing.

He sighed and turned to pin her with a look. Heโ€™d forgotten herย stubbornness in the last difficult years when sheโ€™d been fighting aย deadly virus that had almost taken her life. Now that she was healthy,ย memories of their first months together, before she had becomeย infected, filtered through his mind. โ€œI was fairly certain I tamed youย way back when,โ€ he said thoughtfully.

Red infused her face. โ€œIโ€™m about to kick your ass, Kayrs.โ€

Maybe not. Interesting. At the thought, his entire body tightened,ย and his cock started to throb. โ€œCara.โ€

Her shiver enticed him. โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œI strongly advise you not to push me.โ€ It was only fair to warnย her, and he went on instinct. After nearly dying when the war hadย ended, heโ€™d been restless since. For so many years, heโ€™d treated hisย mate with more gentleness than he wouldโ€™ve thought possible asย sheโ€™d endured the virus.

Now that she was healthy, a primal part of him, one much closerย to the surface than he liked, wanted to claim her again with all theย dominance that was inherent to his species. โ€œOkay?โ€

She breathed out. โ€œOh, mate. Youโ€™re the one who needs to stopย pushing.โ€

He reached out, catching the long strands of her hair before sheย could avoid him. Her eyes widened, and he twisted his wrist withย enough pressure to tilt back her head, fighting instincts heโ€™d forgottenย he had.

Curiosity and desire spilled from her.

His nostrils flared, catching his mateโ€™s scent. It had been too long since theyโ€™d both been whole and healthy. Heโ€™d forgotten her defiantย nature and how much she liked to challenge him. โ€œMaybe this tripย was a good idea,โ€ he said softly, the beast inside him raging as herย lids half-lowered.
