To lighten up Tax Day we’re joining the Indulgence Mixing Business With Pleasure Blog Tour, which is highlighting The Seduction Game by Emma Shortt and A Night of Misbehaving by Carmen Falcone. AND we get a special guest post by author Emma Shortt, who shares the (wonderfully hilarious) Ten Reasons Why Dating a Geek Girl is Awesome!!

*****

  1. We don’t need anyone to fix out computers for us…in fact we’ll fix yours if you need us to…and we won’t even check your browsing history (we totally will but we’ll be thrilled if we find a stash of hentai).
  2. We’ll have no problem with your Superman underwear/bath robe/tee shirt. Actually we’ll probably steal it for ourselves.
  3. We think it’s cute that you spent a significant amount of your teen years reading comic books…we did too.
  4. We’re totally up for Star Trek/BSG/Dr Who/Avengers weekend binges.
  5. If you take us on a date it is perfectly acceptable to ask what our favorite element is. But we’ll assume you mean periodic table, not which part of your body.
  6. We also like to be asked what our favorite number is but we’ll answer honestly (usually with a prime) so do not ask this as a roundabout way of scoping out the ’69 possibilities’…you’ll just confuse us.
  7. We’ll think it’s kinda cute if you don’t know how a spectrometer works and all sorts of awesome if you do.
  8. We have no issue with you fantasizing about Dani from GoT. We’ll join you.
  9. We will always buy you cool gifts…mostly because we want them for ourselves. Who doesn’t want a Romulan bird of prey made to scale?
  10. We’ll adore your cat because Data has one and so does Spock (enough said).

If you’d like to know more about why dating a geek girl is awesome then check out The Seduction Game by Emma Shortt.

By Emma Shortt

Blurb:

When millionaire bad boy, Will Thornton, tries to buy computer-geek Kate Kelly’s building out from under her, she refuses to sell. Will might be uber rich, and super successful but she won’t be bullied. Trouble is, she didn’t expect Will to look like one of her fantasy heroes, or to make her heart beat a little too fast. She’s prepared to wait him out, but it’ll take every ounce of her self-control to win this game.

With millions of dollars on the line, Will is positive he can make Kate sell. He’s played the game better than anybody and charming is his middle name. Problem is, the snarky, geeky, computer-wiz is nothing like he imagined—impossibly cute and a match for him in every way.

The game is on but can two such radically different people come out winners in the game of seduction?

As a kid Emma wanted to be an astronaut, or maybe Captain Janeway. Because she didn’t really think her career choices through very well she ended up in an everyday geek job, crunching numbers and sighing over syntax. It seemed a long way from the stars and in an effort to escape Emma decided to get serious about her other passion. Writing. Several years later and Emma has yet to walk on the moon or sit in the Captain’s chair, but she is still writing. She scribbles stories in all sorts of genres, contemporary, paranormal, post-apocalyptic, historical, sci-fi…if she hasn’t tried it yet she will before long. The only common theme is the romance. A hopeless romantic everything Emma writes has a love story in there somewhere.

Guest Post – Through His Eyes

14 Monday Apr 2014

This morning the wonderful Deborah Camp gives us newbie writers some tips and then lets us take a peek at her newest book, Through His Eyes. . . which looks perfect for those who dig suspense stories.  Enjoy!

*****

Tips for Novice Writers – and Reviewers!

Hi, everyone! Thanks for allowing me the chance to blog with you.

When I taught writing there was always a student in every class who would approach me after having a few pages edited by me and ask, “Should I just give up writing?” To which I would answer, “If all it takes is for me to tell you to, then by all means, give it up!”

Sure, I knew the student wanted me to stroke and coo and say, “No, you must not quit!” But really? If that’s all it had taken for me to stop writing, I would have thrown away my pen and paper in fifth grade!

If you’re a writer, you write. Doesn’t matter if no one but you reads it. Stories and characters waltz about in your brain and you simply have to allow them to blossom into text. However, once we do allow our works to be seen by people other than those who personally know us, then we have to learn to accept criticism and we must understand when to take advice to heart and when to dismiss it. These are difficult lessons to master.

Here are the top three things I’ve learned from reviewers:

  1. Get as many reviews as possible from people you don’t know. Look for similar praise and beefs. If several reviewers praised your snappy dialogue, rejoice and strive to make your dialogue sparkle even more. Conversely, if several reviewers note that your pace is slow or that it was difficult to understand her heroine’s motivation, take a close look at those hiccups. Fix them before you write your next book.
  2. When reviewers find typos or bad grammar and punctuation, hire a professional editor and proofreader for your next project. Be aware that editors and proofreaders aren’t the same thing. Editors discuss plotting, characterization, pacing, word choices, and sentence structure. Proofreaders catch typos, incorrect punctuation, misspellings, and continuity mistakes.
  3. Be sure that the people who review your books actually like the type of book you’ve written. I’ve had yucky reviews from people who admitted that “I don’t usually read this kind of thing” or “romances aren’t my cup of tea.” I dismiss those. Same goes for the editor you choose. Ask the editor who she/he has read in your genre and what her/his favorite books are in your genre. If she/he hasn’t read any books that have been published in the past two years, then she/he probably isn’t savvy about what’s hot and what’s not in your field.

In closing, let me also caution you not to reply to a reviewer or editor until you’ve given yourself a day to think about it. Temper whatever you say or write, understanding that your work was published and people have a right to their opinion. With reviewers, it’s best to thank them, taking them  to task only when they get “personal” in their critiques. With editors, it’s best to discuss why and how you can improve what you’ve put on paper. Great editors can make you a great writer, so when you find one, don’t ruin the relationship by being too cantankerous and stubborn.

Excerpt:

Trudy drew in a breath and told herself to chill out. Levi sat in the rattan chair to her right, crossed his legs, and flicked a white thread from his black trousers. He was the picture of calmness and she felt as if her chest was full of butterflies.

“Do you two have separate rooms?” Trudy asked, trying to drive past her nervousness and get Quintara’s goat.

Levi smirked and glanced at a cackling Quintara.

“Levi’s too busy seducing all the pretty television anchor women to want to share a room with a well-rounded, older enchantress like me. Isn’t that right, Levi?”

“You’re the one who was announcing your room number to every waiter and barkeep we ran into last night.”

“And a lot of good it did me,” Quintara said, flipping her string of red beads and puckering her lips in a pout. “But let’s talk about murder.” She glanced from him to Trudy. “Have you felt anything, dear? He’s been talking to you, hasn’t he?”

Trudy fidgeted on the sofa. “Yes, a little. I don’t know . . .”

“You do know,” Quintara said, her tone scolding, scalding. “You have felt him?”

“Yes.” The word almost stuck in her throat. She glanced toward Levi and flinched when she saw that he was completely focused on her. Talk about intense! It was like she was being blasted by a laser beam. “He’s thinking of murdering a barmaid that he knows. But I’m not entirely sure—.” She caught the rapier-edged glance Levi and Quintara exchanged. “What?”

“You have the right person, dear.” Quintara nodded to a folded newspaper on the coffee table. “A barkeep was murdered last night. He mutilated her.”

“Oh, no!” Feeling as if she had been socked in the gut, Trudy reached for the newspaper and located the front page article easily. The details were sketchy. No clues. No leads. Used a serrated knife. Mutilation. Worked at the Gold Lagoon on Canal Street. A shiver ran through her and guilt brought hot tears to the back of her eyes. “I should have told you about the vision sooner.”

“And what? We would have cased out every bar in Key West and warned the potential victims?” Quintara shrugged. “We must have more to go on than that, dear. We’ll put our heads together and create a profile of this killer. We’ll get to know him so well that we can predict his movements. Eventually, we’ll be ahead of him and be able to identify him and help catch him.”

Trudy turned toward Levi to find that he was still studying her, one brow slightly arched. “What have you been getting about this guy?” she asked.

He lifted one broad shoulder. “The victims haven’t given me much to go on yet. They didn’t see him coming and were knocked out. The woman before this one – Janie Fullbright was her name – was blindfolded, gagged, and when she came to, her wrists and ankles were tied. She was a heroine addict.” He held out a hand for the newspaper. He wore a silver ring on his middle finger and the square black onyx in it glinted in the sunlight.

When he moved, Trudy caught a whiff of lemony lime. One cool customer, she thought. Everything about him was controlled, calculated almost. But there was an undercurrent of turmoil just below his polished surface. She’d always felt it and that intrigued her about him –more than his psychic abilities or his reputation as a womanizer.

About the Books

Too Tough to Tame

“THIS IS A WONDERFUL BOOK.”

The book is funny and touching. I have read this book over 50 times already and I never get tired of it. Tess is so cute while Storm is strong and loving. They made a great couple.  — Amazon review from Snowstar

Tough Talk and Tender Kisses

“ABSOLUTE GOLD!”

This is definitely the best novel in the “Tough Man” series. The entire series is great; this one just happens to be my favorite. I absolutely adore Reno Gold (hero) and I love how he wins Adele with love and humor.  — Amazon review from A. Gideon

Lover of the west and the people who tried to tame it, Deborah likes to write about strong, independent women and the men who are their equals. She grew up on a diet of TV westerns which have served her well. Living in Oklahoma has also been a godsend. Since she appreciates men with devilish twinkles in their eyes, she likes to mix laughter in with the love scenes in her books.

Cheyenne’s Shadow

“ONE OF THE BEST!”

One of the best romance novels I have ever read. There is excitement, sadness, and passion in this book. I know I have read this book at least five times since I bought it.  — Amazon review by S. Ceballos

A Tough Man’s Woman

“FIVE STARS!”

I really enjoyed this book as it was one that kept you guessing most of the time.  — Amazon review from Phyl

Lonewolf’s Woman

“WONDERFUL STORY!”

Ah, fascinating to the last drop (or page). Highly recommended. Surely, a keeper!  — Amazon review from M. Hartmann

Black-eyed Susan

“FIVE STARS!”

I found it hard to put down. It made me realize how things were in those years (long before I was born). I looked for more books by the same author.  — Amazon review from C. Schmidt

Lady Legend

“I LOVED IT!”

The main characters in the book, Copper and Tucker, are great together even though they are totally different. I never read any of Deborah Camp’s books before, but after reading this one, I’m looking for more.  — Amazon review from Love to Read Jan.

Book Review – Falling for the Wingman

Book Review, Crista McHugh, Falling for the Wingman, Kelly Brothers series

cover42703-mediumAir Force pilot Caleb Kelly has come back home with one mission in mind—to propose to the woman whose letters and lucky charm helped him survive his deployment in Afghanistan. But when he finds their apartment empty with a note saying she’s left him, he arrives at her mother’s house in rural Alabama less than a week before Kourtney is about to marry another man. Now he’s out to win her heart again and gets some unexpected assistance from her younger sister, Alex.

Alex Leadbetter has always thought Caleb was too good for her manipulative, social-climbing sister. She had assumed Kourtney’s identity to write letters to him and keep his spirits up until he returned home to the hard truth, never expecting to fall in love with him along the way. After he shows up in town, she convinces him that the best way to get Kourtney back is to make her think he’s fallen for someone new — her. But when a fake romance becomes all too real, her deception may leave them both grounded.

I’ve not read any of the other Kelly Brothers books – I’ve seen them, thought about it, but didn’t get around to picking one up.  I think I might have been missing out.  I really like McHugh’s style – it’s smooth, easy-to-read, and engaging.  The characters were very normal, like someone you would know in real life, and their issues were quite understandable.

Alex is a little different than the rest of her family but she’s found her niche in the world.  She may have more grease on her hands than makeup on her face, but it makes her happy.  Her relationship with Caleb makes her happy too … except that he doesn’t know it is her.

It may seem a little icky to go after your sister’s ex (I’m an only child so I don’t know) but the way their relationship develops, plus the lack of a close bond between the sisters, makes it pretty believable.  It also might be a little strange that Caleb moves on from Kourtney so quickly but he’s been gone a long time and their relationship wasn’t very deep before he left.  It’s the emails that made the difference and those came from Alex … he just doesn’t know it.

I’m not usually a fan of deception romances but this one worked for me.  I liked the characters and how they got to know each other a little better.  It is a little fast but there is a foundation already in place but … say it with me, he just doesn’t know it.

Book Review – When We Met

Book Review, Fool's Gold series, Susan Mallery, When We Met

This one isn’t out yet, but I was too excited to wait!

*****

9780373778652_p0_v1_s260x420New York Times bestselling author Susan Mallery invites you back to Fool’s Gold, where a newcomer to town might finally meet the man she never knew she needed…

Angel Whittaker earned his scars the hard way, but the scars that can’t be seen are the ones that haunt him the most. Since he moved to Fool’s Gold, California, he’s cobbled together a life for himself as a bodyguard trainer. If he’s not exactly happy, at least his heart is safe.

Working with pro-football superstars taught tough-talking PR woman Taryn Crawford one thing—she can go toe-to-toe with any man. But then dark, dangerous former Special Ops Angel targets her for seduction…and challenges her to resist his tempting kisses.

Even in four-inch heels, Taryn never backs down. Unless, somehow, Angel can convince her that surrender might feel even better than victory.

If you’ve read any of the other Fool’s Gold books you kinda know the plan – two people who had no intention of falling in love fall in love, one of them runs scared (usually him), there’s a love fest night with alcohol and sisterly love to offer comfort and bash the guy, then the guy comes to his sense and they live happily ever after.  BUUUUT if you’ve read any of the other Fool’s Gold books then you know it is a magical journey every single time, regardless if you know what to expect.  Plus, Taryn can’t do anything quite like everyone else … absolutely best love fest ever!  She’s got to be one of my favorite characters.

And I so want to raid her closet!  She had a very rough start to life but she’s making up for now with awesome style and a lot of sass.  She’s strong, smart, and caring, but her past has definitely left scars when it comes to men and love.  She’s made a family for herself with the guys at Score but there’s still that intimate part of her life that is lacking.

Angel hasn’t exactly had an easy go of it either.  We’ve gotten to know him a little bit as we’ve been there with the other members of the bodyguard school as they fell in love, but now we get a little bit more on why he’s as closed off as he is.  It’s a tragic story but with the love of a strong woman, and best of all a sweet troop of little girls, he’s starting to open up a little.  It’s not a smooth journey (it never is), but it is a touching one and I devoured every page.

Like all of Mallery’s stories, this isn’t just about the hero and heroine.  We get little updates on previous couples, plus a look at future stories.  And I have to say that I absolutely adore Taryn’s Boys.  She might treat those football players like unruly children (and sometimes they are) but they have big hearts and troubles of their own.  Two of them are getting books in the next couple of months and I’m sure the third won’t be far behind (if not actually right along with the others).  I definitely can say I’ll be first in line for all of them!  (As always, you don’t have to read all of the stories in order and you can definitely start right here … but with fantastic stories like these, I’m not sure why you wouldn’t want to get them all.)

Mallery is a master at giving her readers The Cute mixed in with a lot of The Heart and spicing it up with The Funny and When We Metis a prime example.  It never fails that she makes me laugh and cry and rant and smile and love every single minute of it.  If you like small town charm, quirky characters, snappy dialogue, and tender love stories, you can’t miss with a Fool’s Gold romance.

Autumn Piper, Book Review, Ripe For Trouble

I’m super excited that we are hosting Autumn Piper this morning as she gives a little insight into her newest book Ripe For Trouble.  She was nice enough to give me an advance copy so I’m sharing my thoughts on the story as well.  Happy Friday!

Hometown Do-Over: Back for More, or Oh, Heck No?

For some people, their teenage/high school years were their glory days. Others are happy that time is behind them. For most of us, the memories are a mashup of good and God-please-let-me-forget.

Maybe because teenage romance is involved, homecoming stories are fraught with angst, humor and often, revenge. Going back to one’s hometown usually means strife from close contact with family members, but it could also involve running into any number of people: old teachers, friends, that one special…nemesis. Or, perhaps, an old flame.

As a writer, I love the fertile ground of the “going home” theme. Maybe because I’ve been both the person living in her birth town as an adult, and also the person who left (three times I moved out of state and still end up back here!).

So. If you’ve moved away from your hometown (and stayed away), would you go back there if you could?

In Ripe for Trouble, Ivy not only goes back to her hometown; she moves back there. This is an act of true bravery, because she never fit in with her classmates. So now she has to face her old fears, her old nickname, and also an old crush.

Things don’t go so well when they meet up again for the first time. She’s just come up behind and overheard him and a friend rehearsing cheesy pickup lines:

EXCERPT:

So this was what life looked like from under the bus.

Ridley cleared his throat and turned to face the pumpkin patch goddess.

Her hands were on her hips, her eyes narrowed. “You!”

“You,” he repeated. Couldn’t be. Of course it was. “Ivy? Ivy League—er, Leeds.” The girl who’d gotten away had returned.

She curled her lip, kept those eyes squinted on him. “Well, well. If it isn’t Ridley Tucker. So you graduated from using crappy pickup lines on every female in sight, to using them on guys now?”

They were just…goofing around. And she was the same too-good-for-him snot as always. He lifted his chin. “Looks like you graduated from Princeton so you could be a pumpkin farmer in Rifle, Colorado.”

“Yale.” If her eyes narrowed any more, she wouldn’t be able to see the light of day. But hey, at least he’d managed to make her turn red. And at least she wasn’t hiding her eyes behind those giant glasses like she had in school. “I’m here helping my uncle for the weekend, and I have a job in town starting Monday.” Probably some fancy-pants lawyer going to court against a big company or something. “It’s good to see you didn’t end up in prison.” She looked him up and down, probably surprised to see him in new, clean jeans with no holes and a real white t-shirt meant to be worn alone, instead of a wife-beater. “I better get back to work. Please let me know if I can be of any assistance.” Her words said she’d help if he needed it, but her tone said she’d help him rot in hell if she could. She turned and strode away.

Sweet Jesus. She did not have an ass like that in high school. Same eyes, though. Like a clear sky on a warm September day up on the flattops. She’d definitely improved since her school days.

“Struck out, huh?” Miguel crossed his arms over his chest, and watched her walk. “Too bad. But you’re not givin’ up, right?”

Ridley blew a raspberry. “We…kinda know each other. Graduated together.”

“Yeah, buddy! Guaranteed score. Now you’re the rich guy with a TV show. You told her about the show, right?”

He shook his head. No point in playing that card. To Ivy Leeds, the smartest good-girl Rifle High had ever turned out, he’d always be Ridley Tucker, the fringe wannabe with a minor juvie record and unemployed parents who spent their days at the corner bar. She was right; it was amazing he hadn’t ended up in prison.

RIPE FOR TROUBLE

by Autumn Piper

Blurb:

The biggest mistake she didn’t quite make just sauntered back into her life.

When Ivy Leeds takes a publicity job in her hometown, few things have changed…but Ridley, the bad boy of her graduating class, has cleaned up his act. Or so everyone else thinks. After hearing him and his friend practicing pickup lines, she has her doubts.

Ridley Tucker can hardly believe his eyes when Ivy, the president of the Brainiac Club, comes back to town. Some things never change—she’ll barely give him the time of day, and she still looks as good as she did that night at Prom.

Living in a small town means avoiding someone is nearly impossible, and those most worthy of avoidance turn up in such awkward places…

Content Warning: High school flame revisited plus reformed bad-boy equals combustion suitable for adults only.

Review:

I have to say that I really needed this book to be longer.  I love the idea of it but there is SO much potential here.  It’s one of those cases where I really liked the characters but I wanted to know more about them.  We get a brief explanation of their history but it has so much more that could be explored.  We also get a glimpse at them now, how they are different from before, but again there is so much potential on the transformation.

For a snapshot in time, though, it is great.  At 35 pages, it is a very fast read and fun.  I felt for both of them because they have that horrible history to overcome.  And, although I totally understand where Ivy is coming from, I really wanted her to give Ridley a break.  It’s been a long time since high school and he could have changed.  I think a conversation or two with a local would have helped the situation … but then there wouldn’t have been a story.

Ridley seems sweet and honest and like he’s turned his life around.  This is one of those places where I really wished we had more pages – I’m assuming that becoming a dad helped with that transition.  His son is absolutely adorable and the love they share is so cute.

Ripe for Trouble is cute and fun and the perfect read when you’ve got about an hour to kill.  You’ll get through it quickly and be looking for more.

Excerpt:

She rustled some papers in front of her. “I left a few letters on your desk that need your signature.”

Her eyes kept flickering back and forth to him and she was biting her lip. It was obvious she wanted to say something else.

“What?” He folded his arms across his chest. “What is it?”

She tilted her head. “I noticed a few things in your office…”

“Such as?”

She spun her chair around so she was facing him, her arm brushing against his knee. There was a mischievous glint in her eye as she counted things off on her fingers. “Such as the Captain Picard figure next to your computer. The signed picture of Leonard Nimoy. The framed Firefly script on the wall, next to the Star Wars cast photo.” She leaned forward, “But what I really want to know is, is that a genuine Star Trek communicator you’ve got in the glass case?”

Unexpected. Totally left field. A fellow sci-fi freak. Fantastic.

This woman just got better and better.

He laughed. “You’re every guy’s dream date, aren’t you?”

She started playing with the top button on her shirt, deliberately twiddling it between her finger and thumb, almost as if she were about to undo it… “Well, is it?”

He leaned forward. “You mean you didn’t try and pry the glass apart to see?”

“Of course I did. Any self-respecting Trekkie would.” She held up a finger to reveal a slightly bent nail. “Unfortunately I didn’t have my sonic screwdriver with me.”

He wiped his brow in mock relief. “Thank goodness. You have no idea what I had to do to get that.” He lifted his eyebrows, “Or who I had to operate on.”

Her eyes widened, the excitement clearly visible. “Spill,” she demanded.

He shook his head. “Oh no. My lips are sealed. I could tell you, but then I’d need to kill you with my genuine from-the-set light saber.”

She let out a shriek and jumped up from her seat. “You haven’t?”

“I have.”

“Luke’s or Darth Vader’s?”

He winked. “I could tell you, but I’d have to kill you.  Hollywood secrets.”

There was something so nice about this. Someone else who appreciated his love of all things sci-fi. And this wasn’t some ploy to try and endear herself to him. No woman could possibly know all these things without being a true fellow fan.  Finally someone he could talk to about who was the best Star Trek captain, and which was the best Star Wars film.

The last woman he’d dated had given an obvious shiver of distaste when she’d seen his collection – the kind that made him feel like a high school geek. Not the most romantic turn-on in the world.

Selena collapsed into the chair next to him and threw her hands in the air. “If you’re not going to share, I’ll let you know right now I’ll find a way of making you talk.”

He laughed. “Told you, my lips are sealed.”

She shook her head. “I should be finishing up. I’m getting tired and want to get home and to bed.” She shot him a sideways glance. “Home to watch my favorite episode of Star Trek with the Borg.”

He tried not to grin. He couldn’t resist, no matter how hard he tried. “Do you always go to bed early, Selena? You don’t strike me as the type.  ”The smell of her perfume was drifting into his nostrils. It was sultry. Something sensuous and spicy.  Their gaze met. That green again. Even in this dim light it was impressive. Kind of like the eyes you would expect on a temptress or a siren, wooing men in just by looking at them. He couldn’t stop smiling around her.

Nor could he stop the range of X-rated thoughts he was having about her.

Helen would kill me. Twice, without a second thought.

Then there was the fact she was paying off a bill and the fact she’d told him she’d just been dumped by her boyfriend. The last thing he wanted was a rebound fling.

But he wasn’t listening. Not at all.

There was a glint of fire in her eyes and a devilish grin on her face. She was an experienced woman. She definitely knew the art of flirtation. “What do I strike you as?”

He felt an instant response in his body—one that was entirely inappropriate for their surroundings. Since when did she sound so husky? Boy, she was good.

Author Info:

When I’m not working on a book I can often be found sipping a  latte at my local cafe and indulging my favorite past-time of people watching.

Growing up in Vancouver, Canada, I always wanted to be a writer. In university I took a detour to study marine biology. I worked as an environmental biologist for many years until the birth of my first child.

I loved staying at home with my kids because not only could I  raise them myself but I could indulge my first love — writing. I soon realized story-telling was what I was always meant to do.

Twenty years later I’m still hooked on writing. I’ve published over twenty-five books with Harlequin. I’m now writing for Entangled Publishing and have a couple of self-publishing projects on the go.

I live in Melbourne, Australia, with my husband and three grown children. As well as writing and hanging out in cafes (Melbourne has the best coffee!) I go to the gym, walk my dog, cook, hike, garden, swim and read. I belong to Toastmasters Club and numerous writing organizations.

I have received ARCs of books free from NetGalley (and many moons ago from BookTrib.com) to review but the majority of the stories are either bought by me or provided for free from the publisher, author, or PR company. The opinions I share are my own and in no way are influenced by an author or publisher. There is no promise of a positive review by any party and there is no additional compensation.
