What It Takes

The Windy Harbor Series

by Willow Aster

Blurb:

A Sexy, Small town, Enemies to Lovers, Brotherโ€™s Best Friend romance from USA Today Bestselling Author Willow Aster

Camden Whitman has always been in my life. I met him when I was five and he was seven, but when he and my brother became best friends, I became nothing more than the pesky little sister he didnโ€™t want around.

There was a period of time when I thought I felt a connection between us, but he shut that down faster than I could blink. Fast forward to adulthood years later, and here I am, still the annoying little sister he canโ€™t stand.

Now thereโ€™s one difference: I want nothing to do with him.

Iโ€™m happy running The Kitty-Corner Cafe in my small town of Windy Harbor, Minnesota, and love living in my little slice of paradise on Lake Superiorโ€ฆuntil Camden decides to move here and open up a new restaurant.

Who cares if heโ€™s a well-known chef who can prepare the most delectable food? He will never hear that from me. Heโ€™s wrecked my small-town, stress-free bubble and filled it with his abrasive comments and intrusive looks.

But then the unexpected happens. One night, when both of our walls are down, I see a glimpse of something other than distaste in his eyes. And it has me wondering if Iโ€™ve misjudged the man that has always gotten under my skin.

When those boundaries are crossed, thereโ€™s no turning back. Camden is on a mission and will do whatever it takes to make me hisโ€ฆ

What it Takes is book two in the interconnected, standalone Windy Harbor series.

Review:

I adore Cameron and Juju together but oh my goodness the angst that these two bring us. I know that part of it was that they were young and Cameron didn’t really know how to handle his feelings & the situation but he sure did make things worse. And they kept at it for years!

I don’t blame Juju for her reactions, especially as the flashbacks give us glimpses into exactly how bad things got. And once they started down that path it was probably hard to come back from it but *whew*

When things are good though, they are delightful. There’s a deep understanding between the two of them and a playfulness that makes me smile. They’ve known each other for years and share so many experiences & interests. They make a great team … as long as they get out of their own way ๐Ÿ™‚

Aster may bring us years of pining, sniping, and hurt, but she also gives us a good mix of spice and connection. I love the small town charm & close family ties of her stories and I’m looking forward to seeing what we get next with Dylan’s story.

Take This Heart

The Windy Harbor Series

by Willow Aster

Blurb:

After an annoying, albeit sexy, encounter with Milo Lombardi, heโ€™s the last person I want to see in Windy Harbor, Minnesota. Being in my favorite small town near Lake Superior with my family is my idea of heaven, and after clashing with Milo at an art event, and then kissing his face off right after โ€“ Iโ€™d be fine if I never saw the man again.

Even though he is sinfully gorgeous, and knows how to use those unforgettable lips.

But my dad has other ideas, and because heโ€™s been dealt a blow that threatens to turn our familyโ€™s world upside down, I want to do what’s best and keep the peace.

Which means, Iโ€™m stuck working on a project with Milo, all day, every day.

And if I thought we didnโ€™t get along in the beginning, itโ€™s nothing compared to dealing with him on a daily basis. He has a unique way of bringing out the worst in me, while showcasing his annoying smirk in the process.

If only I could forget how his mouth felt on mine, and the way his strong arms felt wrapped around me.

Take this Heart is book one in the brand new, interconnected standalone Windy Harbor series.

Review:

I adore Willow Aster’s stories. The ones I’ve read are full of charm and humor and feels and this one fits right in. There’s a kind of enemies to lovers thing on Goldie’s part and she does give Milo a bit of a hard time. She’s got her reasons but she does run hot and cold. Milo seems to be all in on her sass tho and once they stop fighting it doesn’t take them long to fall in love – maybe not long enough for some, it is a bit of insta love ๐Ÿ™‚

As the first of a new series, we’re also given a glimpse into the characters for future stories – Goldie’s siblings and friends – and I cannot wait to see them all fall in love. They are a big loving group with big hearts and big personalities. There are a few characters from other stories that make appearances but it isn’t going to impact new readers, just a touch of fun for returning ones.

There’s also a little family drama that will probably work its way into the rest of the stories. I’m not going to give much away but it does cause some issues for Milo & Goldie and isn’t completely addressed by the end (although I wouldn’t technically call it a cliff hanger). The project the family is working on also isn’t finished so they will likely help tie the series together.

Small town romances are some of my favorites, with their quirky characters and the way everyone knows everyone’s business, and Aster brings it. Take This Heart is a slow burn, fabulous start to a new series and I’m ready for the next book already!

A small town, marriage of convenience, single dad, sports romance from USA Today Bestselling Author Willow Aster

Crazy Love

The Single Dad Playbook Series

by Willow Aster

Blurb:

Penn Hudson. Sexy. Intense. Gorgeous.
The star running back of the Colorado Mustangs.
Well-known playboy and consummate bachelor.
We met in the Bahamas.
I knew exactly who he was.
He had no idea who I was.
Yet for a few blissful hours, it didnโ€™t matter.
We had an unbelievable connectionโ€ฆ
Something special that held so much promise.
Then I unexpectedly had to leave and never had a chance to say goodbye.

Fast-forward to today, when I am about to see Penn again,
and heโ€™s going to find out exactly who he was kissing in the Bahamas.
Iโ€™m excited about my new job and returning to my hometown of Silver Hills.
But seeing him every day won’t be easy,
especially with the lingering memory of his touch and the attraction that still burns between us.
When he faces an obstacle in adopting a young boy heโ€™s mentored for years,
I offer him a solution I never thought Iโ€™d make:
A fake marriage.
He needs to show stability and a squeaky-clean public image,
and I figure, how hard could it be to play house?
But as time goes by, nothing feels fake anymore.

Iโ€™d always planned on getting married for love,
but sometimes we make once-in-a-lifetime sacrifices.
I just hope I wonโ€™t be devastated in the process.

Review:

Honestly, I don’t think I even read the blurb before signing up for this one so I was a smidge disappointed that we went the obvious fake marriage route. The trope can be fantastic but it can also be bad, depending on how it’s written, but I shouldn’t haven’t doubted Aster because she handles it like a dream. And really the story is about so much more.

It’s full of humor and feels, with adorable kids and a just as adorable dad Penn, and I couldn’t have been happier with how everything goes. Crazy Love is low angst and so satisfying as we get to be there while Penn figures out how to be a dad and a husband, from the first meet cute with Addy to the sweet ending for this adorable family.

I am so sad to see this series end. I absolutely loved these guys. The way that they support each other, stepping up when they needed to, giving themselves whole body to their kids and their women. And Penn is no different. He comes into himself so much here and I loved every minute of it.

Aster was a new to me author when I picked up my first Single Dad Playbook story but she quickly found a place on my must read author list.

A sexy, small town, grumpy sunshine, single dad, sports romance from USA Today Bestselling Author Willow Aster

Wicked Love

The Single Dad Playbook Series

by Willow Aster

Blurb:

I fell in love with his little girl first.

From the moment nine-year-old Becca Fox and I hugged, it was like weโ€™d known each other forever. Precocious, sweet, and kind, I just knew this little girl was exceptional. Her dad, though? Not so much.

Bowie Fox checks every box in the looks departmentโ€”rugged, intense, and the kind of man who makes you forget how to breatheโ€”but his personality? About as warm as a snowstorm.

That is, until weโ€™re seated together at his best friend’s wedding, and thenโ€ฆwe dance.

For hours.

Beneath that gruff and hard exterior, I catch glimpses of a man who wants to let loose and enjoy life.

After the wedding, when a hotel mixup leaves me without a room and stranded in Landmark Mountain, Bowie invites me to stay in his room. In his bed.

Itโ€™s innocent at first. Until itโ€™s not. A sizzling one-night stand for the books. Then I wake up alone and when I see him at breakfast, he is as distant as ever.

Bowie lets me know his life revolves around Becca, his teammates, and football. He makes it perfectly clear that there is no room for anyone elseโ€”especially the bubbly coach of his daughter.

As much as our paths keep crossing, I know the broody linebacker isnโ€™t ever planning on falling for me, but when I find out I am pregnantโ€”I wonder, Can he fall for us?

Review:

Bowie really has moments of being a not so nice person but his love for his daughter and for his friends is definitely a redeeming quality. And I really think it helps getting both character’s POV. It helped us see where Bowie was coming from, because otherwise his hot/cold routine could have been a bit much.

I loved Poppy. She’s so upbeat, giving, and sweet. Her love for others, especially the kids she works with, just about pours out of her. I kinda wish that Bowie had given her a chance earlier but it’s kinda understandable with his history. I do wish that he’d had a bit more of a chance to explore that, get some resolution with his father and his ex.

Bowie’s daughter, Becca, is such a bright spot as well. With her enthusiasm and endless love, it’s not a surprise that she connects so well with Poppy. Once Bowie gets out of his own way, they form such a wonderful little family.

And as with the previous books the guys, and now their wives, are there to support them every step of the way. It’s definitely one of my favorite things about this series. We’ve got one more “single dad” to go and I’m all in to find out what is in store for our Penn.

Reckless Love

The Single Dad Playbook Series

by Willow Aster

Blurb:

I fell in love with Rhodes Archer the night we met thirteen years ago.

We made a pact that night to never cross the just-friends zone.

However, Rhodes crossed that line by kissing me recently, and I canโ€™t get over it.

Iโ€™ve loved him, ached for him, craved him for years, but I’ve never wanted to ruin what we have.

And now, when Iโ€™m a cheerleader for the Colorado Mustangs and heโ€™s their superstar tight end, weโ€™re not even supposed to be in the same room, let alone be together.

But, he is everything to me.

And that includes my godson, Rhodesโ€™ adorable three-year-old son, Levi, who I love as my own.

Itโ€™s impossible to stay away from each other. And I donโ€™t want to when I can still feel his lips on mine and the lingering touches between us.

The lines have blurred, and rules are being brokenโ€ฆ

I just hope we arenโ€™t being too reckless and break each otherโ€™s hearts in the process.

Reckless Love is book three in The Single Dad Playbook series. Each book can be read as a standalone.

Review:

Rhodes & Elle together are just the best. They have a great connection from years of being friends and they offer each other so much support. Being there for each other, in the best and worst of times. It’s a shame that they somehow managed to friend zone each other when their feelings are so obvious. But maybe it’s for the best as they spent those intervening years truly getting to know each other and coming into themselves. Their time is now and not any earlier.

I don’t usually like romances that do flashbacks – preferring that they do the history at the beginning and then move into the present – but I liked how Aster does it. All of the flashbacks chapters are pertinent to something said or done in the next chapter, but still giving us a good understanding of their history together and how they got to today. Maybe it’s not everyone’s thing but for someone who doesn’t usually like them it seemed to work for me.

The only thing that really bothered me was it didn’t feel like the guys played as much of a part in this one as they did in Secret Love. That found family thing, the way they showed their love & support for each other, was some of my absolute favorite moments in the last book. I just wanted a little more of that.

Aster is a newish to me author and I’m really enjoying her stories. I like her characters, the delicious amount of steam, and all the feels that she gives us. And based on what I’ve seen so far, I’m definitely looking forward to the next one in this series!

Secret Love

The Single Dad Playbook Series

by Willow Aster

Blurb:

Who meets their soulmate shopping for bagels in a supermarket bakery aisle?

Before I moved to the small town of Silver Hills, I would have told you no one.

But the second I meet Henley Ward, Iโ€™m swept away.

He is everything I look for in a man: tall, strong and so handsome.

Our instant attraction, spirited banter, and heated glances leave a lasting impressionโ€ฆ

Until I see him again.

Like a raging tornado, he storms into the school ready to take on the teacher who has crushed his daughterโ€™s spirit.

The dedication this man has to his three daughters could be the sexiest thing I have ever seen.

Before we know it, we are stealing kisses in his kitchen and secretly getting together any chance we can.

I know I should stay away from Henley so I donโ€™t lose my job, and his focus is on raising the girls and being the best wide receiver in football, but our attraction is intense and the draw between us is too tempting to resist.

I can only hope our secret love will survive when our truth is revealed.

Review:

From an adorable meet cute to a few speedbumps along the way, I enjoyed seeing Henley & Tru work their way into a HEA that works for them. A journey that is somehow both angsty and not angsty at the same time. I think maybe because those problem moments are telegraphed pretty well but then quickly resolved. It’s not necessarily bad, just different.

The pacing is also interesting. It seems like a slow burn but large chunks of time are done off page so overall the story moves pretty quickly. I kinda wish we’d gotten a few more of those moments on page, because there was the opportunity for some really good relaxed moments between Tru and Henley as well as them with their friends and family.

Speaking of friends and family, I have to say those are my favorite parts of the book. The way Henley is with his kids – the closeness, respect, and support that they show each other. But also the mistakes that are made along the way. And I could go on for ages about the amazing relationship between Henley and his friends. Those guys are the epitome of well adjusted and in touch with their emotions. The way they freely show their love & support for each other, recognizing and sharing their feelings both good and bad, while at the same time not being afraid of giving each other hell *chefs kiss* I want more of this kind of representation of healthy, respectful men in my books.
