Excerpt:

Jo touched an angled, bell sleeve. The material was beautiful with a silky sheen and sweetheart neckline. The dress seemed to breathe with a life of its own. “So this is the ancient wedding gown from 1912.” She knelt to inspect the seams, the material, and to look for any blemish. How could a dress so old be so fresh and beautiful?

How did it seem to speak to her? Turning over the V-cut hem, she found a neatly stitched TH.

“Taffy Hayes,” Haley whispered over her shoulder. “She was the black seamstress who sewed the gown for a very nouveau riche Birmingham society family. Emily Canton married Daniel Ludlow and became Charlotte’s great-grandmother. But she never knew anything about Emily or her family until she found the dress in an old trunk. It sent her on quite the journey.”

“And the journey ended with you.” Jo gazed up at Haley.

“I guess so. I felt unworthy, yet honored, to be invited into the unique sisterhood of the dress. Like, why me?” Haley began to remove the dress from the form. “But the moment I put it on, all my guilt and shame, especially over Dax, melted away. I could barely remember how I felt when I found out he was married. I could look at myself square in the eye for the first time in years. I knew this dress was special. If Charlotte was offering it to me, I was going to take it. I don’t know how it got out, but I’m putting it away. I don’t want it damaged. I feel responsible, you know, to protect it for the next hundred-plus years. To guard the stories of the other brides. Help me, Jo. Open the trunk under the window. See the linen bag? The dress goes inside.”

Book Review – A March Bride

A March Bride, a Year of Weddings novella, Book Review, Rachel Hauck

cover38126-mediumIn this sweet romance by award-winning author Rachel Hauck, royal wedding plans are in the air, but the bride is being asked to give up so much for her new life that her groom-to-be is worried she may not return from her most recent visit home.

A year’s worth of novellas from twelve inspirational romance authors. Happily ever after guaranteed.

Susanna has found her true prince, and their happily ever after is just around the corner. But when Nate asks her to give up something precious to her, Susanna can’t help but wonder if it’s a sign that their love is not meant to be.

Susanna Truitt (Once Upon A Prince) is three weeks from royalty. She’ll soon marry King Nathaniel II of Brighton Kingdom. But when the government insists she renounce her American citizenship before the wedding, coupled with the lack of involvement by family and friends, Susanna’s heart begins to doubt whether this marriage is God’s plan for her.

Nathaniel would do anything for his bride-to-be. But he knows his position requires that she give up a lot to be with him. Her life will never be her own-right down to her very identity. When she travels home to St. Simon’s Island, Georgia, right before the wedding, Nathaniel fears she won’t return. Gathering his courage, he devises a plan to win his bride all over again, and together they seek out a kingdom to treasure above all.

I thought Once Upon a Prince was fantastic and I’m happy to see a follow-up for Susanna and Nate.  (There is a sequel Princess Ever After, which isn’t a continuation of their story like this one, but I will be reviewing that one in the future so keep an eye out.)  It’s was nice to see what happened to them after they fought to be able to get married – the changes that have to be made and the sacrifices that Susanna has to make to marry a king.  Like the first story, there is a little bit of political fighting in A March Bride but it wasn’t quite as prevalent as it was in OUaP, probably because this one is just a novella.

Instead we get two people who have fears about their future and how they address those.  It’s very sweet and very real.  Everyone has reason to doubt that they are doing the right thing when they make as momentous change as getting married, but for Susanna it is even bigger because it is on an international scale, in front of the press, and the world.  And once she moves forward it is even more final because she’s marrying the life-time leader of a country – to go from small-town Georgia to queen is a big step and it would make anyone cautious.

Nate loves his bride-to-be and we get to see that he is once again will to fight for her and her happiness.  He’s got a lot going on being king but he also knows the value of a good woman who will support him and love him for him.  He also knows that if she won’t give up this last thing to be queen, he’ll either lose her or the crown.  Once again, Hauk delivers Prince Charming (or I guess here it would be King Charming) and his actions to make Susanna happy are just wonderful.

It’s pretty much a must to have read Once Upon a Prince, but considering what a wonderful book it was I don’t think anyone should hesitate.  If you dream of meeting your own Prince Charming or loved the idea of Prince William and Kate, then this is definitely the series for you.  You can’t find a better hero than Nate … be prepared for him to once again sweep you off your feet.

Book Review, Once Upon a Prince, Rachel Hauck, the Royal Wedding series

(Come back tomorrow for our stop on the Over the Edge blog tour, complete with special guest post by author Suzanne Carroll.)

cover26772-mediumI thought this book was fantastic.  I love the Truitt clan – they are loud and Southern proud – and I want to be an honorary member.  Susanna has been dating her marine for twelve years.  It started in high school and survived multiple tours in the Middle East.  Only now, instead of proposing, he’s come to tell her that he’s found someone else.  Her life plan in tatters, she now has to decide on a new plan.  Then she meets Nate.  Prince Nathaniel is on vacation in St Simons Island, Georgia and definitely did not count on falling in love with a woman that he, by law, cannot have a future with.  He’s duty bound to go home and marry someone from his own country.  But when Susanna comes to his country to see his coronation and he sees her in his home, everything changes.  Can a king and an ordinary American figure out a way to make a life together?

Once Upon a Prince was born out of the romance of Prince William and Kate Middleton – the idea that a regular person can fall in love and marry a royal.  It’s a modern day Cinderella story and is just as appealing as the fairy tale.  Both Susanna and Nate are wonderful.  She is the perfect complement to him, reminding him of the good in himself and the world, of giving himself up to God’s plan and doing what’s right.  Even when she doesn’t know he’s a real prince, she does a great job of supporting him.  Although it directly impacts his decisions about love, I did think there was a little too much about the politics that he has to deal with.  Honestly I skimmed over most of that, just reading enough to get the basics and how it applies to him & Susanna.  I understand that the drama was important to him and how he moved forward (and I’m guessing a future story or two since this is the first in a series) but it was a little dry.  The rest of the story is definitely worth it though.

Once Upon a Prince is a must read for anyone who had fantasies of having their very own Prince Charming sweep them off their feet.
