The One I Didn’t See Coming

Plain Daisy Ranch series

by Piper Rayne

Blurb:

It’s the classic story—girl returns to her hometown only to end up moving in with her high school crush, who she hates.

Returning to Willowbrook was my only option after Chicago chewed me up and spit me out. Technically, it wasn’t Chicago’s fault. It was his fault—the man I thought I knew who turned out to be a liar.

My older sister, always the one to swoop in and fix things, secured me a job as a yoga instructor on her fiancé’s family ranch. As my self-assigned protector, she’s keeping one eye on me and one eye on Emmett Noughton, her fiancé’s brother.

He’s the charming, fun-loving, take-life-as-it-comes kind of guy, and once upon a time, his name was scribbled in my notebooks. Back then, I was invisible to him. Now, he’s looking at me like I’m the only thing in the room. But he lost his chance with me a long time ago.

It’s easy to keep him at arm’s length and nurse the grudge I’ve held onto for years. Until the house I’m staying in sells, and I have nowhere to go except his house. Now, resisting him isn’t just difficult—it’s impossible.

Review:

I loved Emmett & Briar together. Her dislike for him just makes him all that more interested in winning her over. He turns up the charm and slowly begins to change her mind. And even tho he believes he’s not interested in something serious, and she’s reeling from a failed relationship, they find themselves struggling to resist their attraction. Quickly moving into territory they never expected.

Emmett may be seen as the non-serious Noughton but there’s a lot of depth to him as well. He’s got ideas and dreams, just needs to have someone believe in him. As Briar & Emmett spend more time together, she shows herself to be that person. And the more time passes, the more her support, humor, and sass has him thinking that maybe he could be the settling down kind. Where his support, humor, and caring heart has her thinking that maybe there’s more to him than she thought.

A book with Piper Rayne on the cover is a must read for me and I don’t even have to see the blurb first. They always deliver characters just brimming with heart and humor, with attitude and charm, and their HEAs are so satisfying with all the feels and believability that you could ask for. Looking forward to many more stories to come.

The One I Stood Beside

Plain Daisy Ranch #2

by Piper Rayne

Blurb:

It’s the classic story—best friends since childhood agree to a fake marriage, thinking they can pretend to love each other without their relationship changing.

Jude would do anything for me. He’s stood by my side since we were six, and I’ve done the same for him.

When my father dies, leaving our family farm drowning in debt and on the brink of being auctioned, I’m not surprised Jude steps in to help. I just never dreamed he’d fall to bended knee and devise a plan for us to fool everyone into thinking there’s more than a lifelong friendship between us.

Soon, I’m moving into his house, we’re planning a wedding on his family’s ranch, and we discover a new side to our relationship. I keep reminding myself it’s not real—it’s only to secure a loan to save the farm.

I’ve secretly loved Jude all my life, and now that I know how good we are together, I’m not sure we can return to being just friends.

Review:

Jude & Sadie have been friends for decades and everyone is just waiting for the day that they get together. Of course, they both want more but, not knowing how the other feels, neither is willing to take the chance on losing their friendship. Until life throws Sadie a curve ball that changes everything.

I’ll admit I loved the story leading up to their wedding. They are great friends and there are so many great moments as they work their way to the point of getting married. And I loved them together. Sweet and sexy, fitting together so well. I just wished they’d do a better job of talking to each other … argh! I mean, it’s pretty much par for the course when it comes to their relationship because otherwise it wouldn’t have taken SO long for them to get together. But … *sigh* … Grovelling Jude is pretty darn sweet, tho 🙂

The One I Stood Beside is a perfect example of why any book with Piper Rayne on the cover is a must read for me. The characters are always interesting, realistic, and fun, with great relationships with their partners, friends, and families. Once they get over any drama, of course. And there will be some kind of issue but it doesn’t seem forced or too much. Instead there is just the right amount of bumps on the way to an enjoyable HEA ending.

I love all of the misc members of the Noughton family and I’m looking forward to what Piper Rayne has in store for us next!

(Can easily stand on its own but there’s only one other story so why not catch up!)

The One I Left Behind

Plain Daisy Ranch, Book 1

by Piper Rayne

Blurb:

It’s the classic story—boy goes off into the world to fulfill his dreams and leaves the girl behind.

Not every boy returns home, and I wish Ben Noughton wouldn’t have come back to our small ranching town at all after he retired from playing professional football.

I figure it’s a quick layover for him. He always wanted out of this town and off his family’s ranch. I just have to bide my time until he turns his back on all of us again.

Then he takes on the coaching position for the high school football team and starts milling around too much, bulldozing the protective walls I’ve built around myself. But he goes too far when he takes my son under his wing to help him be the best player he can be. Leaving me to protect not only my own heart but my son’s too.

Because I promised myself a long time ago that I’d never be the girl in the rearview mirror again.

Review:

Piper Rayne’s newest brings us to a close-knit Nebraska ranching community. And like all good small town romances, it has big personalities, fast moving gossip, & couples just waiting on their HEA.

What better way to start off than a second-chance romance between an ex-NFL football player and his high school sweetheart. I loved Ben & Gillian together – both still having feelings for each other after all the years apart. A connection that time didn’t break, but maybe bruised a bit.

I gotta say, though, life seems to come pretty easy to Ben. He was able to choose when & how he came home while Gillian had to stay behind, to weather the gossip and be reminded of their relationship at every turn. So I was with her as she first tried to avoid him and then to keep him at arms length. I can even understand why she gave in when she did but she really could have made him work for it 🙂 Granted we are only given some of the details on exactly what happened between them, and they were young, but it would have been nice to see a bit more effort on his part.

As the start of a new series, The One I Left Behind is a delight, bringing us the big Noughton family that I can’t wait to see more of. They can be a little rough, and not the best at communicating, but they are full of heart and there are plenty of them to bring us a lot of new stories.

The Drawback of Single Dads

Lake Starlight series

by Piper Rayne

Blurb:

He’s the father of my child and my best friend.

When Hudson and I met, somehow things just clicked between us. We had the same sense of humor and the same carefree attitude about our lives and goals. Neither of us wanted to lay down roots, we wanted to explore the world.

Then one night, too much alcohol and uncontrolled hormones led to the line blurring, and we fell into bed together only to discover a month later that we were more careless than we thought.

Like the upstanding guy he is, Hudson followed me back to my hometown of Lake Starlight, Alaska, where you can’t throw a penny and not hit one of my family members. We gave them the news that yes, we were having a baby but there would be no wedding. We loved each other but we weren’t in love.

Fast forward three years and we live side by side to make co-parenting our daughter easy. I’m a writer, and he’s a ski instructor. We’ve worked out all the rough edges. Life is good.

Until out of nowhere, things start to change. He has a girlfriend, we’re arguing more than ever, and it feels as if someone has come along and popped our perfect bubble. I’m not sure we’re ever going to fit back inside it now because things are developing. Things like feelings.

Review:

I’m trying to figure out how to convey my feelings for this one without spoiling anything so I think I’m going to have to just go with a generic warning that there MAY BE SPOILERS AHEAD.

Together, Palmer and Hudson are pretty awesome co-parents. They’ve got the sharing things down, living next door and supporting each other. It’s sweet that they’ve figured out how to be friends and raise a spirited, confident daughter. Butr of course we know that things have to change or it wouldn’t be a romance, right?

And I like the way that Piper Rayne showed the progression of their feelings. It read true, the way things changed for them and they start to realize that maybe there is more than friendship between them. Which everyone else has known for years 🙂

I also like the way we get their backstory through Palmer’s writing. It’s an interesting way to do flashbacks, which can easily overpower a story when authors have us jumping back and forth in time. It was a little weird that Palmer seemed a little surprised that she was writing their story when I assume it was pretty straight on the way things actually happened but that’s a tiny nitpick.

The other one was the catalyst to get us to the HEA. It was pretty obvious and I kinda hoped they weren’t going to go there, just because it seemed a little too easy. But I have to say they definitely made up for it with the epilogue. It was cute and sweet, a perfect ending to their romance.

I love Piper Rayne’s books. The characters are always interesting and they show me with every story that they can make any plot line work. I always know that if their name is on the cover, it’s a must for me.

Having said that, I’m a little late on the Piper Rayne bandwagon so I’ve only read a few of the stories in this (and related) series. And while each can stand on its own I always feel like I’m missing just a little something. It seemed a tad bit more with this one because I think I might have understood the drama with Piper & her parents better. Don’t let it stop you from jumping in wherever works for you, just be prepared for a lot of people and a lot of interesting stories. Might make your TBR pile multiply! I know it has mine.

Something Like Love

Chicago Grizzlies series

by Piper Rayne

Blurb:

I want to.

I can’t.

I’ve been friends with Cooper Rice from the moment we met. He was just as famous a decade ago on our college campus as he is now being the star quarterback for the Chicago Grizzlies.

But he’s not only talented on the field, he’s also the gorgeous football star women fawn over, posing in underwear and razor ads.

Here’s a secret those women don’t know—Cooper Rice isn’t a playboy. He’s the kind of man who wants to settle down with a family. He’s content ordering pizza and massaging my feet after my long shift as an emergency room doctor. He listens to me as if he’s as invested as I am in my patients. He has never let me down.

This is exactly why I refuse to live without Cooper in my life. Eight years ago, I made him promise me that we’d never cross that line. And just like I knew Cooper would, he’s held to that promise.

Despite our best efforts, our relationship is evolving, shifting into new territory and I find myself unsure if I want Cooper to keep that promise. Ignoring the obvious could tear us apart, but so could giving in, meaning there’s a chance I’ll lose Cooper forever no matter what decision I make.

Review:

There’s a comment at the end that the authors find it hard to write a friends-to-lovers story and I agree that it can be hard to pull off. I think they did well with what they had. I appreciated that they didn’t do a ton of flashbacks to their college years (I struggle with that as a reader) and that they concentrated the first half on the “will they” and the second half on the transition.

Cooper is just about perfect, as he has been throughout the series. He does pretty much everything for Ellery and lets her set the rules when it comes to their relationship, even when it isn’t what he wants. It’s worked so far … until it doesn’t any more.

Elle struggles a lot with what she wants. She’s allowed her dad to dictate her career (and a good portion of her life) so any changes to her relationship with Cooper scares her. But losing him would be even worse.

I can definitely see both sides of this relationship and what brings them to the brink of throwing everything away. While I appreciate that their struggles get them to their HEA, I do wish Elle had maybe handled things a little differently. I still really enjoyed the story but once I saw where it was heading I kinda didn’t want to go there 🙂

Piper Rayne knows how to deliver somewhat spicy romances with a satisfying HEA. I always plow through their stories, enjoying the characters and their struggles and finishing them in just a couple of days. They have definitely become a must read for me!

Something Like Lust

Chicago Grizzlies #2

by Piper Rayne

Blurb:

Do it.

Don’t do it.

Never in my life did I think I’d wager in my head whether to sleep with Chicago Grizzlies wide receiver, Damon Siska.

He’s the perfect package—hot body, killer smile, and flirts like he earned a doctorate in it. But anyone who reads gossip blogs knows he is looking for one amazing night and nothing more.

I’m not the usual type of woman he beds. I’m a middle school teacher who cherishes her quiet nights in, drinking wine, and watching romantic comedies, dreaming I’m the heroine. I’m not embarrassed to admit—I want the fairy tale.

But Damon caught me at a weak moment. Fresh off a break-up and feeling lousy about myself, I gave into temptation and left the next morning like every other woman he’d slept with.

Except I walked away with more than just the memories when three weeks later the little white stick glowed with two pink lines.

Review:

I think that if you haven’t read Something Like Hate you’re probably going to be a little confused about Damon. Everyone is referencing how he is this playboy who sleeps around but since this book starts when he finds out about Adeline’s pregnancy we don’t see it. Instead he shows himself to be an amazingly caring, responsible, and giving guy. Going by just what you see here, he’s so very easy to fall in love with. Which of course Adeline does, complicating their co-parenting situation.

I’m not a fan of hiding and teasing a main character’s reason for doing things. We know there is something in Damon’s past that causes him to be afraid to commit but it isn’t until basically the end that we find out what it was. And for me it wasn’t developed quite enough to be a satisfying issue/resolution. But since the rest of their relationship was so dang adorable and I really like them together, I’m not letting it affect my satisfaction with the rest of their story.

Maybe not my favorite of Rayne’s stories, but definitely a good read and maybe one of my favorite male leads on their’s. I love Damon as the reforming rake fighting his feelings and he’s beyond adorable as the doting dad. Adeline is a good match for him. She’s down-to-earth but feisty and won’t let anyone walk all over her when it comes to her child and what she feels is best. But she also understands Damon’s position and is willing to work with him. It creates minimal drama but a whole lot of sweetness and fun.

Review:

Y’all, Piper Rayne is one of those one click authors for me. It doesn’t matter what their book is about, and there have been some where the blurb made me go ehhh, they have never let me down. Their characters are always interesting and detailed, the plot is engrossing, and the love story leaves me with a happy smile.

Claus and Effect is no different, full of hijinks and feels in equal measure. I enjoyed the insta-hate that these two have going. The dual POV makes it a little bit easier to be OK with their initial level of snark (I think it’s easy to get heavy-handed with it and move into rude & unattractive instead of tension hiding something more type thing). As they are forced into one unexpected, and often madcap, situation after another, forcing them to get to know each other better, their feelings start to morph into something a bit more positive. And before they can make it to Portland, they realize that maybe they were wrong about a whole lot of things.

I’ll admit I didn’t see the third act trouble coming. And I’m not sure I 100% followed Tre’s issues, at least not to the extent that they come into play here. But it made for an extra quirky ending 🙂 There’s not a lot of steam here, in case that’s your thing, but I didn’t mind at all. It was all about the journey, and what a wacky & fun journey it was. Keep it coming Piper Rayne!

Something Like Hate

Chicago Grizzlies #1

by Piper Rayne

Blurb:

I love him.

I loathe him.

It’s like plucking daisy petals in my head, but he’ll never know.

When Miles Cavanaugh, the best safety in the league, was traded to the Chicago Grizzlies football team last year, I could finally breathe. Temptation was miles away.

How naïve to think it would end there because when the opportunity to write for a national magazine based in Chicago lands in my lap months later, I can’t turn it down. Sure, it’s a big city, but the sexual energy feels like a beacon between us the minute my plane lands.

To make matters worse, I end up having to take over the job of reporting exclusively on the Chicago Grizzlies. Which means traveling with the team, interviewing players, and pretty much having an all-access pass to their lives during the season.

Miles and I put up a great front, quickly hating on one another, but we both know it’s a lie. We also know the rules are simple. For me, don’t sleep with the subject of your articles. For him, don’t sleep with the journalist who can make or break your career.

I thought straight-laced Miles Cavanaugh followed all the rules… oh how wrong I was.

Review:

I have to say I really wished they’d found some way to get Miles and Bryce a story without moving him to Chicago. I felt so bad for him, having to leave his friends (yeah, I understand the reality of the sport but this is a work of fiction), and I don’t quite feel like they gave him a connection with the new team to replace that just yet. It helps to amplify his issues, especially with Bryce’s articles, but I like him so much I just wish he’d been treated a little better 🙂

Having said that, I enjoyed this story a lot more than I thought I would. I don’t know why the way these two fight never appealed to me in the Kingsmen stories but I should have remembered that Piper Rayne writes a dang good story and I just needed to have faith. Their characters are a delight to read and the stories flow so smoothly to endings that always make me so happy.

Returning readers know that there had to be more to Miles & Bryce’s bickering so it’s satisfying to finally get our answers. And Bryce proves to be just as feisty as we knew she’d be, as well as troubled by her past. It will take a patient man to break through her barriers and luckily Miles is just the guy to do it.

With fun & spicy banter, plenty of sexy times, and moments that deliver the feels, Something Like Hate is a satisfying conclusion to an old series and a good start to a new series. I’m so looking forward to getting to know the rest of the Grizzlies!

(Can be read as a stand alone but will probably be better enjoyed having read the Kingsmen series to really get a feel for Miles & Bryce’s history.)

The Issue with Bad Boy Roommates

Lake Starlight series

by Piper Rayne

Blurb:

I was only looking for a roommate…

I’m the town widow.

Not the only one, but the youngest by far.

My husband died one year after our wedding, casting me as the charity case in my small Alaskan town.

Since then, everyone—including my big family—try to keep me busy as if that will stop the haunting memories from resurfacing.

Do I know it’s time to move on? Of course, but that’s easier said than done.

Then Van Adler rides into town. His bad boy vibe complete with his motorcycle and tattoos causes my body to fill with need for the first time since my husband’s death.

To make matters worse, he’s the one who answered my ad for a roommate. Sharing the close quarters of our two-bedroom apartment means I have to set some ground rules like keeping his rippled abs covered. Soon we become friends, he’s making me dinners, and we’re binge-watching television shows all night.

The more our lives intertwine, the more I start to fall for him. Leaving me wondering, can you find the love of your life twice in one lifetime?

Review:

I feel like this one needs a little bit of a warning. As I moved through it, I felt like I’d missed out a little by not reading a lot of Piper Rayne books. Not so much from missing the first in the Lake Starlight series but The Baileys series. This is a HUGE family and there is a lot that has happened to get to the point where this generation is finding their own HEA. It’s not required reading but I will say I felt a little confused by some of the references to how the misc parents got together. If that’s going to bother you, I’d suggest adding a few books to your TBR pile 🙂

Having said that, I did enjoy getting to know Van and Brinley. Brin has been a little stuck since her husband died four years ago. It doesn’t help that she lives in a small town so it’s hard to escape the label of “widow”. She’s not really put herself out there, but she’s definitely not been pushed. Until Van.

Van isn’t the bad boy that the title implies – he’s caring, brave, and dedicated to his job. He’s patient when Brin needs it but he’s there to help her to be more daring, to be more herself and not who she thinks she should be. His support and encouragement of her is pretty awesome.

But while I liked the two of them, there was something just a bit missing for me from what I expect in a Piper Rayne story. The characters are interesting, their romance works, and I love all the assorted side characters … I don’t know. It’s a darn good story, it’s just not spectacular and that’s the norm when I pick up one of their stories. Others seemed to have loved it so maybe it was just me … regardless, it’s definitely worth a read no matter what.

Review – Over My Brother’s Dead Body, Chase Andrews

Over My Brother’s Dead Body, Chase Andrews

Kingsmen Football Stars series

by Piper Rayne

Blurb:

Chase Andrews.

The Kingsmen’s top tight end.
My brother’s friend and teammate.
My new neighbor.
The grumpy to my sunshine.

But underneath that grumpy exterior, there’s so much more.

Chase likes to pretend nothing affects him, but I’ve seen glimpses of his other side in the time we’ve spent together.

And the more we get to know each other, the more I’m falling for him.

Under normal circumstances, this would be great. Except my hyper-protective big brother thinks no man is good enough for me, and my ex-fiancé is trying to win me back.

One charming, seemingly good man already broke my heart. Am I stupid to give a self-confessed relationship-adverse football player a chance to break it a second time?

Review:

There is so much about these two that I loved. The sibling’s friend trope will get me just about every time and I love a grumpy/sunshine storyline when it’s done well (and Piper Rayne definitely does here).

Twyla is working on getting over her failed engagement and I appreciate that she actually took some time to work through it, instead of just jumping into a new relationship. The time they spend getting to know each other a little better before giving in to their long-standing attraction gives more depth to their story.

He may seem grumpy but Chase has a big heart and is a good guy. He’s private and doesn’t really have a lot of energy to give to playing nice but he’s committed to the people and things he feels are important. And soon Twyla becomes very important to him.

A protective brother, feelings of self-doubt, and some serious communication issues causes trouble between the two but they find a way to a HEA. (Chase’s big gesture may not have been for me but Twyla seemed to like it and Piper Rayne made it work.) The authors really know how to bring on the sizzle, create characters that you can get behind, and deliver just enough angst to keep things interesting. Piper Rayne is turning into a must read for me and I won’t hesitate when I see a new book coming my way.

(Saying that, y’all! Somehow I missed getting my hands on the last book (You Can’t Kiss the Nanny, Brady Banks) but I didn’t feel like it affected my enjoyment of this one. I think they can mostly stand on their own but I definitely recommend reading as many as you can 🙂 )
