Bittersweet Christmas

The Order series

by Nina Croft

Orphan Liam Ryan isn’t asking for much this Christmas–just his Uncle John. And he’s counting on Father Christmas to find a way to make that happen.

But when Father Christmas tosses Liam’s letter, claiming that the kid is asking the impossible, his daughter, Winter, takes over. Half-pixie, Winter, longs to do something important with her life, starting with getting a job at the Order of the Shadow Accords, the organization that polices the supernatural world. When she discovers Liam’s uncle works for the Order, it seems like fate.

Savaged by werewolves and bitten by a vampire, no one knows what to expect of John

Ryan, but it won’t be anything good. So there’s no way he’s getting involved with his nephew…or anyone else. Worse, he’s getting a babysitter over the holidays. But when he meets irrepressible Winter, all that matters is whether she likes her guys to be naughty or nice….

I’ve never heard of this series but I saw Nina Croft on the cover and I knew I needed to give it a go.  And she definitely didn’t disappoint!

John Ryan is struggling with his new state of being.  A vampire-werewolf is something new and no one knows what to expect.  He’s getting a little tired of everyone hovering but he also understands why they have to.  He doesn’t even understand himself or know what to expect next so how can he expect anyone else to … then he meets Winter.  And his instant and undeniable attraction to her just complicates an already overly-complicated situation.

Winter really wants to start over somewhere that people don’t have certain expectations about her – yes, she’s made mistakes, been a little flighty, and overly … enthusiastic sometimes but she’s older now.  And she really wants the chance to prove herself.  Babysitting Ryan may not be what she expected but if she can get him together with his nephew then maybe she can finally get her chance.  Finding him super sexy and hard to resist is definitely not the best way to do that.

Bittersweet Christmas isn’t really a holiday read (Winter’s dad is Santa and it all starts with the letter) but it is definitely super enjoyable.  There’s the perfect amount of heat and heart and danger to meet anyone’s wants.  And now I’m super curious about what else is going on in the world that Croft has created 🙂

(This is the first in the series that I’ve read but it can easily be read on its own.  Croft does a great job of keeping you in the loop of anything that you might need to know.)

HFG_500His Fantasy Girl

by Nina Croft

Blurb:

There’s nothing like a near death experience to make a guy reassess his life. And that’s exactly what nightclub owner Logan McCabe decides to do, starting with looking up the girl he spent one wild night with eleven years ago, right before his life turned to crap. He spent a year fantasizing about her. Now he’s ready to see how reality matches up.

Abigail Parker is a perfectionist. She’s only strayed from the straight and narrow once in her life, on her eighteenth birthday. It was supposed to be one wild night with a totally unsuitable man before she settled into her sensible future. Instead it changed her life forever.

Logan might still be the sexiest man Abigail has ever seen, but a dirty-talking, tattooed, ex-con is the last thing she needs in her perfect life. He claims she’s his fantasy girl, but what he doesn’t know is she’s also the mother of his ten-year old daughter…

Guest Post – Out of Control

Babysitting a Billionaire series, Book Review, Nina Croft, Out of Control

This morning Nina Croft shares her thoughts on every romance junkie’s favorite thing … falling in love.  And then we’re going to take a look at her newest book, Out of Control, complete with my review and a contest for a $25 gift card so make sure you check out all of the fun.

*****

Why do people fall in love?

I write romance and one of the first things I have to decide when I’m planning a book, is just why is this couple perfect for each other? What makes them the ideal match, who despite all the odds, will fall madly in love and stay that way for the rest of their lives.

The problem is, at the start of the book my characters usually seem far from a perfect match. In fact, often my characters are so far from a suitable match that’s it’s a wonder they ever look twice at each other. In my latest release, Out of Control, the heroine, Dani, is an army sergeant wounded in the line of duty and waiting to see if she can return to her unit. In the meantime, she takes a job protecting Zach a billionaire playboy/writer. At first sight, they seem to have nothing in common except for a deep-rooted fear of commitment.

So why do people fall in love?

I did a bit of research and there’s a lot of speculation out there. Here’s a few of the (sometimes amazingly contradictory) reasons; because they’re similar, because they’re different, symmetrical features, proximity, age, apparently men can fall in love with a woman’s hip to waist ratio (how shallow!) Alternatively, it could just be a matter of timing. Or a simple chemical reaction, pheromones or over-active hormones. Or how about genetics and you have absolutely no choice in the matter; it’s predetermined from the moment the sperm meets the egg.

I also read that all of us have an internal set of criteria which sets out what we find attractive and what are absolute essentials in a partner, tall, short, blond … so if we come across someone who combines all those criteria then perhaps love at first sight would be inevitable.

I’m not sure I’m convinced by any of this, so how does it happen, what triggers love?

A lot I think depends on how love comes about and there are a number of different situations I can think of:

  • Love at first sight – I’ve got to be honest, I can never quite believe this one, but maybe if every single box is ticked.
  • Lust at first sight, which then turns into love. Relationships that start out as sex only but the people realize they love each other.
  • Friends to lovers – one of my favorites. The relationship starts out as best friends and then one or both realize they love the other.
  • People who know each other but don’t notice each other and then something happens (maybe he finally notices that perfect hip to waist ratio!) and POW—they’re in love.

So why do you think people fall in love?

by Nina Croft

She’s a challenge he can’t resist.

Hollywood heartthrob Zachary Hunter loves women—as long as they don’t want more than a little fun in the bedroom. When his most recent movie stirs up the wrong kind of attention, the kind that includes an attempt on his life, he hires a friend’s company to locate the threat. The pint-sized redhead assigned to protect him isn’t what he expects—or wants. Worse, he can’t take his eyes off of her.

After ten years in the army, Danielle Sinclair knows how to handle men. With a new security gig to pass the time until she’s cleared to return to the military, she’s figures her sexy new client will be easy to manage. And then he opens his gorgeous mouth, and she can’t decide whether to kiss him or kill him. His sex appeal may tempt her into his bed, but his sexist attitude is unbearable, and she’s going to make him eat every single word…

Review:

I’m not sure why, but I’m a little surprised by how much I liked these two.  Dani’s kinda prickly and very much a woman working overly hard to fit in to a man’s world.  It could easily have made her off-putting but she’s totally fun.  And Zach, while a bit debauched, is smooth and charming and, because he’s honest about it, totally likeable in his womanizing ways.

Dani had a devastating event in her childhood that has affected her for a very long time.  It’s very understandable why she’s hesitant to get involved.  But I’m not sure I totally understand Zach’s aversion to commitment, other than the fact that he can.  And though he’s spent his time being footloose and fancy free, like any good rake, it just takes the love of a good woman to change his mind.

The story might seem a little clichéd, but it is extremely well-written, with engaging characters, and a smooth flowing plot.  (It’s part of a series but it definitely can stand on its own and totally one I’d recommend.)  If you are looking for some humor and heart and just a touch suspense, then Out of Control is for you.  It’s not an adventure romance and the threat to Zach’s life plays only a small part except to get the two together.  Instead it is all about two people who are afraid to give their hearts away, only to find out that they don’t have a choice.   I loved watching them get to know each other and fight their feelings, only to realize that it is definitely out of their control, and the ending was one of my favorites for its simplicity and honesty.

Bittersweet Darkness, Death Defying, Nina Croft

I’m so pleased to have gotten the chance to do a little Q&A with awesome author Nina Croft.  And to also get a double whammy look at her books, Bittersweet Darkness and Death Defying.  Enjoy!

*****

What do you like best about writing romances?

I write a lot of paranormal romance, and while I love the happy endings, it’s the journey there that I really enjoy. I love the idea that I can take a couple with seemingly insurmountable odds, have really bad things happen to them, litter the way with carnage, but still know everything will come out well in the end.

What is your favorite romantic story (movie/book. fact/fiction)?

I don’t think I could pinpoint a single story, but one that sticks in my mind is The Flame and the Flower by Kathleen Woodiwiss. I love that book and still have it on my bookcase. It was the first big romance I read (I think I was around twelve at the time) and the book that started me on my life-long love of romance.

Film wise, I love Office and a Gentleman and Pretty Woman (or maybe I just love Richard Gere!)

If you could be any romantic heroine, who would it be and why?

Hard one. I suppose it’s guaranteed I’m going to get my happy ever after because this is romance, so maybe I should look at the question from another direction. Which hero do I want to spend the rest of my life with (or even eternity as I do meet a lot of immortal characters in my reading and writing.)

From my own books, I’d have to choose Skylar, the heroine from Break Out, book 1 in my Blood Hunter series. Skylar is a kick-ass soldier, immortal, and she gets to spend eternity with Rico, a stunningly gorgeous, two thousand year old vampire and my favorite hero.

From other authors, I think I’m going to choose MacKayla Lane from Karen Marie Moning’s Fever series. I know poor Mac suffers a lot but she does get Jericho Barrons in the end and that has to be worth a little suffering.

Which of your characters/books was the most fun to write?

By far the most fun to write is my Blood Hunter series. They are a mix of science fiction, paranormal and romance and absolutely anything can happen. I’d been watching my favorite TV show, Firefly, for the third time, and decided I wanted to write a space opera. But I’d also been going through a stage of writing contemporary and was in need of a paranormal fix. So the idea for Break Out, book one in the series came about—vampires in space. I’m working on book 6 in the series now and still loving it.

If you weren’t a writer, what would you be doing instead?

I honestly don’t know. Growing up, I wanted to be a vet, or an assassin or a space explorer, but none of them seem a likely alternative career at this point in my life.

In a long ago existence, I was a chartered accountant, but I really didn’t like it very much and have no wish to do it again.

I now live on an almond farm in the remote mountains of southern Spain. It’s a long way from anywhere and the chances of finding employment here are zero, and I don’t want to move. So maybe I would have to pick almonds. Sadly, the pay is really bad so maybe I’ll keep writing.

There’s never an end to the crazy when you’re demon spawn. Not that Faith Bettincourt’s complaining. She’s been patching things up with her angelic on-again off-again boyfriend, Matt, and her best-friend-turned-sister-in-law is soon giving birth to the Anti-Christ Part Deux. Oh, and Faith is saving kids from Death in her pediatric unit, one soul at a time. Life is good.

Or at least it is until Faith accidentally runs over the Angel of Death and is forced to take his place. Now she’s taking lives instead of saving them. This is kind of a problem when you’re a nurse. As if that weren’t bad enough, she is suddenly thrust into the worst scenario of them all–Matt’s ex is back, and she’s brought the Apocalypse with her.

Faith’s not about to give up the world…or her man. But when the chips are down, what’s a girl to do but take matters in her own hands, consequences be damned?

Author Info:

I’m a small town girl who was blessed with a large tree in the backyard that was a perfect spot for reading on summer days. Mixed with too much imagination it made me a bratty child but fated me to become a storyteller. After a stint of “thinking practically” in my twenties I earned degrees in Business and Economics and worked for a software firm in southwestern Germany but my passion has always been a good book. I currently lives in Pittsburgh with my two wonderful kids and a husband that learned the gourmet art of frozen pizzas to give me more time to write. When I’m not writing I can be found fencing and arguing with my dogs about plot points. Most days the Beagle wins but the Dalmatian is in close second. I’m in a distant third.

Excerpt:

 “Mr. Sanchez—Rico—”

“Sit.”

Had she really thought his voice sounded like warm honey? That one word cut through the air like ice. She didn’t even have to think about it. She sat right down. Her lips were suddenly dry, and she ran the tip of her tongue over them.

“Is there a problem?” She decided that the squeak in her voice was quite allowable within the parameters of her character.

He strolled into the room, one hand resting on the laser pistol at his thigh, and came to a halt in front of her chair, far too close. He was tall. And broad. And menacing. She licked her lips again.

“Just a small one.”

“Well, I’m sure we can sort it out.” When Rico didn’t rush to agree with her, she decided to give the bimbo smile another try. Her dry lips stretched across her teeth in what she hoped would bring an answering smile from Rico.

He grinned, but for some reason it didn’t make Skylar feel any better at all. “Oh, I’m sure we can.” His smile broadened and the tip of one white fang showed briefly.

Skylar’s heart stopped. Then started again, so loudly she could hear the blood thundering in her veins.

Holy Meridian. What the hell was this guy?

Her mind flashed back to the rumors she’d heard about him, rumors she had ignored as too ludicrous to even consider. Just legends dredged up from the past.

She forced herself to take a deep breath. He could be any number of things. One rather large tooth did not mean he was a….

He reached up and slipped the shades from his eyes. His gaze locked with hers, and ice-cold prickles skittered down her spine. “Er—I just have to pop back to my shuttle for a moment.” She stumbled to her feet. “I forgot to—”

She closed her mouth as he continued to stare at her out of those crimson eyes. Who, or rather what, had eyes the color of blood?

He reached out a hand, placed one finger on her shoulder, and pushed her down. Closing her eyes, she tried to remember her training. What to do if caught. What to do if facing torture. Unfortunately, nothing was coming to mind.

Taking a few deep breaths, she pushed her fear to the back of her mind. She knew they wanted the money. She just had to hope that they wanted the money more than Rico wanted—

Again, her mind refused to finish the sentence. After all, she didn’t actually know what he wanted.

He licked his lips, ran his tongue over one sharp white fang, and stepped toward her.

Okay. She didn’t know, but her mind was doing a good job of guessing. Or a bad job.

She shook her head, took another deep breath, and sat up straight. “So,” she said and was proud of how normal her voice came out, “this problem… Are you going to tell me what it is, or are you just going to stand over me and drool?”

Scavenger hunt quote:  “Is she dead?” Tannis asked. Rico frowned. “Of course she’s not dead. What do you take me for—some sort of monster?”

Roz has been indebted to the demon Asmodai for five hundred years, and her freedom is just around the corner. All she has to do is complete one last task for him—obtain a key that had been hidden in a church centuries ago.

Piers, the Head of the Order and an ancient vampire, is intrigued by the woman who comes to him for help. She’s beautiful and seemingly kind, but she’s hiding something. And he’ll find out who she is and what she really wants once he uses his power to get inside her head.
