Bayshore series, Ember Leigh, Make Me Fall

Some of my favorite love stories are those where the characters have non-romantic histories – friends to lovers or siblings friends kinda things … and Ember Leigh’s newest looks like just my sort of book ๐Ÿ™‚

Make Me Fall

A Bayshore Novel

by Ember Leigh

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Blurb:

Thereโ€™s one rule in my family.

Stay away from the Daly brothers.

We were raised to know them as users. Manipulators. But I only ever saw Connor as the enigmatic senior hottie who dropped into fifth period to teach us about the perils of drunk driving.

So when my first big girl job out of college ends up with us working at the same company, itโ€™s heart throb city all over again. Except heโ€™s way ahead of the game. Successful, talented, put together. Iโ€™m just a frumpy twenty-something in a quarter life crisis who doesnโ€™t know a glue stick from a makeup highlighter.

He would never want me, even though heโ€™s all I ever wanted in secret. So when we cross paths one night at the bar and one drink leads to another, he slaps me with an offer I canโ€™t refuse.

Accompany him back to Bayshore, flight included.

Only stipulation? Pose as his girlfriend.

Our families will flip, but Iโ€™m not strong enough to say no to those baby blues, especially if it means Iโ€™ll have a chance to spend the next two weeks with my adolescent heart throb.

Excerpt:

Once the lights flick off, itโ€™s just Connor and me in the queen bed. Barely clothed and lying there.

I measure my breaths for the longest time, trying to fake a steady rhythm while simultaneously listening to hear if heโ€™s fallen asleep. We are not touching at allโ€”in fact, Iโ€™ve scooted to the farthest reaches of the bed, curled up on my side, in a position that becomes uncomfortable approximately twenty seconds in. But I canโ€™t move. Because weโ€™re supposed to be falling asleep.

My mind races for what feels like hours. I thought downing all that moscato would help me fall asleep, but Connorโ€™s weight on the other half of the bed erases any vestige of sleepiness. All I can think is, Male body nearby!!!! MALE. BODY. NEAR. BY. As if some sort of purity alarm is going off inside me.

Despite the elevated mental activity, I do somehow fall asleep. Because the next time Iโ€™m aware of anything, sunlight is streaming into the bedroom and I am warm.

The Dalys keep their house this side of frigid, but Iโ€™ve managed to make quite the nest in this bed. And man, itโ€™s comfortable. Pillow-top mattress and all. I yawn, and when I nestle back into my comfortable spot, I realize my cheek has stuck to something.

I tilt my head, and my temple presses into something warm. Hard, even. I draw a deep breath, shifting beneath the sheets. Theyโ€™re, like, 8,000 count or something and impossibly soft. My arm moves from its resting spot, and thatโ€™s when I notice it wasnโ€™t resting on the bed.

Iโ€™m pretty sure I have my arm flung over Connorโ€™s torso.

This makes the purity alarm start screaming again, and I jolt up.

Connorโ€™s torso is beneath me. Not the neutral expanse of unoccupied bed as I had assumed.

No. His naked, perfectly toned and tan torso.

I blink, taking it in. And that unsightly spot on his chest?

Yeah, my dried drool.

My hand shoots to my face, and I can feel the crusty trail leading from my mouth. Oh please God, no. I bolt out of bed before he can wake up and see this. Or realize that I draped myself across him like a needy little nymph.

I stumble toward the bathroom attached to the bedroom. The early morning sunlight grates on my sensibilities, and I actually run into the doorframe before I make it inside. The door shuts much harder than I intend, and I wince inside. Bull in a china shop at eight a.m. over here.

I clean myself up as quickly as possible, brushing my teeth for good measure, and then snag my morning pee. I walk back into the bedroom, readier than ever to continue sleeping in.

Connor is sitting up in the bed, rubbing at his eyes. The sheets are gathered around his hips, and his belly creases as he leans forward slightly.

โ€œMorning,โ€ he says, looking at me with one eye pinched shut.

The sight of him is too glorious to comprehend. He is pure tousled bedhead and bleary baby blues. Half of him looks ready to flop backwards and keep sleeping.

โ€œAre you getting up?โ€

โ€œYeah.โ€ He yawns, then pauses before saying, โ€œI had a dream we were spooning.โ€

I snort, but then I spot the dried drool on his chest and freeze. โ€œYou should take a shower.โ€

โ€œDo I stink?โ€

โ€œNo, itโ€™s justโ€”โ€ I have no good reason waiting in the wings for why. โ€œI like to start my day with a shower. I thought you did too.โ€

โ€œI do, actually.โ€ He stretches and then finally rolls out of bed. And this is when I blessedly receive the answer to my question. He sleeps in boxer briefs.

Hallelujah, Iโ€™ve seen the flaccid outline of his cock.

He glances at me, and I jerk my gaze over to the suitcases. I must document this occasion in my journal. This is a major victory for sixteen-year-old me.

โ€œSorry,โ€ he says. โ€œIs this weird? Iโ€™m used to sleeping in my underwear, soโ€ฆโ€

I look down at my puritan night ensemble: long pants, long-sleeved cotton shirt, and the lemur cartoons printed across all of it. โ€œNo, no. Itโ€™s fine. I would have slept in my underwear like I normally do too, butโ€ฆโ€ I gesture to my pajamas. โ€œI just got these, so I need to wear them.

โ€œTheyโ€™re cute,โ€ he says offhandedly, but what he probably means is, Youโ€™re weird. โ€œDid you sleep well?โ€ He pauses at the dresser. His calves are sculpted. His ass is comprised of two small melons. Every part of him is perfect, and I canโ€™t help but stare.

I nod so hard I almost give myself an issue for my chiropractor to sort out. โ€œYes. Yes. Oh, yes. It was great. Had a great time. I mean sleep.โ€

Heat zips through me, though I canโ€™t say why. Any sign from him Iโ€™m eager to translate into a profession of attraction, so itโ€™s not hard to warp his words into something more. But I remind myself Iโ€™m being silly. Ridiculous, even.

We are work colleagues and, during our time in Bayshore, co-conspirators.

That is it.

So why is it so hard to remember?

Make Me Fall

Books & Brews #2

by Sara Rider

Release Date: September 24, 2018

Series: Books & Brews #2

Genres: Contemporary Romance

Page Count: 226

Blurb:

After losing her job, her home, and her friends in her divorce, Nora Pitts is determined not to make the same mistakes when she starts over in the small town of Shadow Creek, Washington. No more toiling away in the lab at the expense of her social life, and definitely no more men. Ever.ย  But making friends in her thirties is so much harder than she anticipated. And when it comes to her gorgeous yet obnoxious neighbor, itโ€™s a whole lot easier to make enemies.

Eli Hardin doesnโ€™t have a lot of sympathy for his uptight neighbor, until he overhears her so-called new friends making fun of her un-datable status. Suddenly he finds himself volunteering for a date with a woman whoโ€™s been leaving angry hate-notes in his mailbox, and in way over his head. Because all it takes is one disastrous date with Nora for Eli to fall hard.

But falling for Eli isnโ€™t something Noraโ€™s ready forโ€”not when heโ€™s her complete opposite, and especially not when he turns out to be the best friend sheโ€™s made in Shadow Creek. But as her attraction and her feelings for Eli grow hotter, resisting him might just lead to heartbreak anyway.

Excerpt:

Eli marked off twenty-six and three-quarter inches as precisely as he could and lifted the blade of the circular saw.

โ€œOh my God, I soooo wasnโ€™t kidding,โ€ one of the women next door said loudly. โ€œNora really does need to get laid.โ€

His shoulders tensed. This wasnโ€™t the first time heโ€™d overheard the women loudly shit-talking his neighbor behind her back. He had no idea why she hung out with them.

โ€œMaybe you should set her up with someone,โ€ another woman added.

The other two laughed. โ€œCan you imagine Nora on a date? Sheโ€™s so uptight and frigid. Who would want to date her? No lay is worth that kind of torture. Canโ€™t you just picture her busting out her bottle of sanitizer before the poor sap tries to hold her hand?โ€

His jaw tensed and he felt the last of his patience snap like an icicle in his warm hands. He sliced the saw through the wood, threw his protective glasses onto the ground, and marched over to the waist-high chain link fence. โ€œIโ€™d do it.โ€

All three women turned to look at him like he was a space alien whoโ€™d just beamed down to earth. The one whoโ€™d been talking the most leaned forward in her seat. โ€œWhat did you just say?โ€

โ€œYou heard me. Iโ€™d go out with her.โ€

โ€œYou canโ€™t be serious.โ€

The more this woman pushed, the more he wanted to put her in her place. No, Nora was not the kind of woman he would normally ask outโ€”mainly because she was one of the few who didnโ€™t seem to fall for his charm. In fact, he was pretty sure she didnโ€™t think he had any charm whatsoever, but she was attractive and smart enough to read a book every month. That alone made her more dateable than half the population in this town. โ€œSure as hell am.โ€

The woman leaned forward, smiling at him like he was freshly caught prey in her snare. โ€œIf youโ€™re looking for a date, I could show you a much better time.โ€

He shrugged, keeping his fake smile on his face. โ€œNo thanks. Backstabbing and mean isnโ€™t my type.โ€

He probably enjoyed the shocked look on the womanโ€™s face a little too much, but it was seriously fucking rude to trash-talk the hostess while sitting on her porch and eating her canapรฉs.

The screen door slid open right at that moment. Nora walked out with a plate of decadent-looking mini-chocolate cakes that made his mouth water on sight. Her eyes darted from her friends to him and back again. โ€œUm, whatโ€™s going on?โ€

He rested his hands against the old chain-link fence. โ€œWhatโ€™s going on is that your so-called friends are talking trash about your love life behind your back and donโ€™t seem to think you can get a date. So I volunteered.โ€

โ€œYou what?โ€

โ€œVolunteered. You and me. Tomorrow night at seven. Iโ€™ll drive.โ€

She slammed the cake tray onto the coffee table and set her hands on her hips. She looked around, like she couldnโ€™t decide where to focus her anger. Of course she settled on him. โ€œWho says Iโ€™d want to go out with you?โ€

He raised his eyebrow, liking the way she got flustered around him a little too much. โ€œGot better plans?โ€

Even at the distance between them, he could see her suck in a breath. Her mouth hardened into a flat line, but she didnโ€™t say no.

โ€œTomorrow. Seven. Dinner. Oh, and consider making new friends who arenโ€™t so damn mean. These ladies donโ€™t deserve any of those amazing-looking cakes.โ€ He grabbed his plank of wood and headed into the house, wondering what the hell heโ€™d just gotten himself into.
