A Walsh Family Story

by Karen Rock

Publisher: Harlequin Heartwarming (July 1, 2016)

Blurb:

Can he juggle everything…including her?

After raising his siblings and running the family pub for more than a decade, Aiden Walsh has set his own dreams aside. Until the most beautiful woman he’s ever seen stumbles into his bar, and his arms. Too bad Rebecca Day is the school psychologist in charge of his brother’s future. Who’s he kidding? He doesn’t have room in his full life for romance anyway. But forced to join Rebecca and her group of troubled teens on an Adirondack retreat, he realizes keeping his family afloat isn’t enough for him…not by a long shot.

Review:

I feel so bad for Aiden, trying to take on all the extra responsibilities for his family can’t have been easy.  And he was so young when he did it.  He’s a dedicated family man, doing everything he can to keep things afloat but all the juggling he’s had to do has let him have very little time to slow down and look at life around him.  While he’s a good guy at heart it has led to him having very little time to really see himself and those around him.  But given the opportunity he does us proud and steps up to really take on the challenge of changing things to make them better for his family.

Rebecca may be a psychologist, with a great outlook on life and a sunny personality, but that doesn’t stop her from having a few blinders about things.  It’s great that Rock gives her this opportunity to grow along with Aiden and her kids, who add some extra liveliness to a fun story.  She didn’t have the best childhood and that’s left some scars but taking this time out with others, helping them see deeper into themselves, also gives her a change to look at herself and realize that maybe there is more going on than what she thinks.

It was enjoyable to see both Aiden & Rebecca grow throughout the course of the book, as they got to know each other they also had a chance to look deeper into themselves.  They didn’t change drastically, which is realistic, but they did have an opportunity to see themselves from someone else’s viewpoint and outside situations.

Under an Adirondack Sky is a heartwarming story about two people finding themselves and each other, learning and growing together while falling in love.

(Part of a series, this book can easily stand on its own.  But I am curious about Aiden’s siblings and will be checking out the series for other great reads.)

Karen RockAuthor Info:

Award-winning author Karen Rock is both sweet and spicy–at least when it comes to her writing! The author of both YA and adult contemporary books writes red-hot novels for Harlequin Blaze and small-town romances for Harlequin Heartwarming. A strong believer in Happily-Ever-After, Karen loves creating unforgettable stories that leave her readers with a smile. When she’s not writing, Karen is an avid reader who’s typically immersed in three different books at a time, all in different genres. She also loves cooking her grandmother’s Italian recipes, baking, Christmas (no need to specify–she loves every bit of it), and having the Adirondack Park wilderness as her backyard, where she lives with her husband, daughter, dog and cat who keep her life interesting and complete.

Releasing March 1, 2016

Harlequin: Heartwarming

Blurb:

Would he still love her…if he knew?

Tanner Hayes smashed Claire’s life to pieces when he chose the rodeo over her ten years ago. And now he’d wrecked her truck! Fantastic. She’d lost her husband, the family ranch was mired in debt, her father was recuperating from a stroke and her son was being bullied. Why not throw a reckless bull rider into the mix?

All she’d wanted was a safe, stable life. But with Tanner back in town—and staying on her ranch—nothing was safe, or under control. Not the feelings she’d fought so hard to forget. Not the son she was determined to protect. And certainly not her long-held secret…

Excerpt:

Everything happened at once and in slow motion.

A crushing jolt shuddered through the truck. Her wheels skidded sideways. She smacked against the window when her pickup rolled down an embankment, as if punched by something large and lethal. Glass rained deadly sharp. The earth tumbled around her, her truck in spin cycle. When a massive tree loomed, the Chevy slammed into it then stilled.

Winded and stunned, she hung upside-down in her lap belt, blood, metallic and warm, on her tongue, a rushing sound whistling in her ears. Her heartbeat changed and grew slow and rolling in darkness. Something hurt, a long way away. Then nothing.

“Ma’am. Ma’am. Are you all right?” A man’s voice shouted, rousing her. She tried turning her head but pain held it in place. When she opened her mouth, silent panic flew out.

“Hold on. I’m getting you out of there.”

Acrid smoke pierced her consciousness. She closed her eyes against the billowing grit.

This wasn’t happening. It was a dream. No. A nightmare.

A tugging motion jerked her right and left, followed by a ripping sound. Large hands halted her sudden fall.

“Got you.”

Her rescuer cradled her against his chest, his breaths heaving beneath her ear. After carrying her some distance, he lowered her slowly to the ground. Grass scraped against her stinging cheeks and she opened her eyes.

“What?” she croaked, then swiped at the trickle leaking from her mouth. A man wearing a cowboy hat hunched over her, his features blurred.

“You’ve been in an accident. We have. Our trucks collided in the intersection.”

“My truck!” She bolted upright and clutched the swirling ground.

An arm snaked around her back and eased her down. “I called the dispatcher. The fire department’s on the way.”

A wail sounded in the distance and Claire wanted to shriek with it.

Her special day. Her anniversary. Ruined. No. Demolished by this…this…

She squinted upward and focused. A dark swirl of hair brushed across the tall man’s forehead; a light scar zigzagged down his square jaw. Recognition zapped through her.

It couldn’t be…

“Tanner?”

“Hello, Claire.” His mouth went up, just a fraction—the same ready-for-anything smile that had once undone her.

She closed her eyes, heart thudding. Ten years since she’d vowed never to see him again…and now here he stood, two for two in wrecking her life.

Guest Post – A League of Her Own

A League of Her Own, Karen Rock

Today we get to visit with the delightful Karen Rock as she shares a little about herself.  She was even so kind as to bring a bit of a sneak peek at her newest Harlequin romance, A League of Her Own.  AND I got a few more looks at the story and let me say that this one could be an emotional rollercoaster.  Both Garrett and Heather have things in their backgrounds that make a relationship super difficult.  But a HEA is worth every moment of it, right?

*****

*What do you like best about writing romances? There’s something so special about falling in love. It’s the moment when we are most vulnerable and most filled with joy because we’ve finally found the person who understands and cherishes us. I love creating two characters who desperately need to find each other and creating that path (and it’s not an easy one!) to love. There is nothing like Happily-Ever-After.

*What is your favorite romantic story (movie/book, fact/fiction)? I love Jack and Rose in Titanic. They both grew so much from knowing each other. Rose became stronger and was able to stand up for what she wanted—and that was out of an arranged marriage with an abusive man. Jack grew into a man who no longer looked out for just himself… he became responsible and cared for others— namely Rose— more than himself. That’s what the best romances always do… bring out great changes in each person so they are worthy of love.

*If you could be any romantic character, who would it be and why? I would be Claire in THE OUTLANDER. Puh-lease let me ride a horse with Jamie Fraser… and have him wrap me in his plaid. Sigh*

*Which of your characters/books was the most fun to write? They’ve all been wonderful to write, but A LEAGUE OF HER OWN was the most fun because I got to research with a Florida minor league team and learn the slang, rhythms, and rules of the baseball world. Now I know what really goes on in those locker rooms… lol.

*If you weren’t a writer and could be anything you want, what would it be? I would love to direct movies, which, for me, is visual story-telling… same craft, different medium. I go to the movies at least once a month and it would be a dream come true to work on an actual set. My father got to consult with Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks (who he said is a genuinely nice guy) while making THE TERMINAL and ate lunch with Stanley Tucci every day. Lucky man!

Thanks so much for hosting me on Romantic Reads and Such today! Wishing everyone a wonderful Holiday season 🙂

A League of Her OwnA League of Her Own

By Karen Rock

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Release Date: 1 December, 2014

Blurb:

He was attractive, talented…and way off limits.

Heather Gadway may have been a world-class college pitcher and a top university coach, but she’s a rank amateur when it comes to managing the Falcons, her father’s struggling minor league team. And when it comes to managing her aggravating attraction to Garrett Wolf, their talented new pitcher. It’s going to be difficult enough to make it as the first female manager in the league and prove to her overly critical father she’s worthy. No distractions. No missteps. And certainly no romances with players. Everything stands between them—including their troubled pasts—even as Heather’s world falls apart and Garrett’s the one who’s there to catch her…

Excerpt:

Garrett’s grumbling teammates filed out of the pre-game meeting, followed by the coaches and Heather’s father. Garrett, however, remained in his seat, watching the lithe young woman as she stood by the door.

At last she turned to him.

“We meet again. Garrett, right?”

He stood and strode to the door. When he stopped, her eyes widened, caution swimming in their depths.

“You mentioned having individual meetings,” he said, keeping his voice even, hiding the irritation shimmering through him. “I thought we’d have ours now.”

She blinked up at him, and her lips moved. Though he strained to hear, he couldn’t make out what she’d said.

“I’m sorry, I didn’t catch that.”

A bright pink suffused her cheeks, and he forced himself not to notice how pretty the color made her.

“I said that I haven’t finished my notes for you yet. I’ll watch you pitch tomorrow. We’ll meet after that.”

He had to give it to her. Soft-spoken or not, she had a direct way about her. He didn’t doubt that she could lead…just not professional baseball players. “That’s what I wanted to talk to you about. I’m requesting to be released from my contract. This isn’t the right place for me to advance in my career.”

Her mobile face stilled. “And why would that be?”

“Look, I’ll be blunt.” He tapped his fingers on the sides of his legs. “This team isn’t hustling, and it’ll be a long time before they come around to supporting you. Things will get worse instead of better. I have a limited window of opportunity to advance. Given these factors, my bottom-line pitching won’t look good with a losing team behind me. I’d like to help you, but selfishly, this is my last shot.”

A speculative gleam entered her eyes. “So you’re asking to be released because you think I can’t help you reach your goals.”

A long breath rushed out of him. She was going to be reasonable. “That’d be great. Thank you.”

She arched an eyebrow. “You’re wrong, and I’ll be as frank with you as you were with me.”

His relief turned to irritation. So she wasn’t going to make this easy. He held his tongue and waited to hear her out.

“I think you’re overvaluing yourself.” She nodded when his mouth dropped open. Guys talked this way to each other. Not women…especially not pretty women…to him.

“Your control isn’t where it should be, and if that’s not addressed, you’ll also be another reason why this team isn’t doing well. But you have potential, and I can help you.”

“Right,” he scoffed. What could a softball pitcher do for him? “No offense, but I need someone with more experience.”

She tapped her chin and angled her head, her eyes flashing up at him. “If I can change your mind about that, will you drop your request and give me your support and a hundred percent effort?”

He held in a laugh. Was she for real? There wasn’t a chance she could change his decision. “What do you have in mind?”

She stepped closer, and her subtle citrus scent curled beneath his nose.

“A contest. If I get more strikes out of twenty pitches than you do, you stay. If you have more, then I’ll release you.”

He stared at her. Processing. She couldn’t be serious. Sure, he had control issues, but he was still better than a college-level player. She was making this easy. But if she was foolish enough to offer him this out, he’d take it.

They eyed each other for a long, tense moment before he jerked his chin at her.

“You’re on.”
