I don’t know how I let it happen but I’m a couple of books behind in the HORNET series. I’m about halfway thru Book 5 and remembering again how much I love them! (And I’ll definitely be moving right into this one & letting you know what I think of both of them.)

*****

Honor Avenged

HORNET Book 6

by Tonya Burrows

Genre: Romantic Suspense

Blurb:

Leah Giancarelli makes balancing her new role as a single mom look easy, but she’d have crumbled if not for her late husband’s best friend, Marcus. She has her issues with HORNET, an elite hostage rescue team—after all, Danny would still be alive if he’d never accompanied them on their last mission—but Marcus has always been by her side, a strong shoulder to lean on…

Until, after one impulsive kiss, he’s so much more.

Eaten alive by guilt, Marcus takes off, leaving both HORNET and Leah behind. Alone is easier. Safer. Because his feelings for Leah are all kinds of wrong, the worst kind of betrayal, and he can’t trust himself not to act on them.

But Danny’s death was only the beginning. Whoever hired the hitman is looking for something, and they think Leah knows where it is…

Excerpt:

Once she reached the pool and garden, she staggered to a halt. She didn’t know where to go. She was trapped inside this villa because someone wanted to hurt her. Just like how someone had hurt Danny. Pulverized his heart. The same heart she had listened to every night for thirteen years.

She jolted when Marcus touched her shoulder. She felt like she’d jump out of her skin if the wind blew in the wrong direction.

“I’m sorry,” Marcus said and turned her toward him, dragging her into his arms. He held her tight and pressed his face against the top of her head. “I shouldn’t have— I’m so sorry.”

She wrapped her arms around his waist and held on until the tremors passed. He felt safe, and she savored it even though she knew it was a false safety. The crash of emotions she felt toward him were anything but safe.

He eased away and gazed down, worry creasing his forehead. “Are you okay?”

She nodded, but when she tried to speak no words came out. She cleared her throat and tried again. “I thought I was ready to know how he died.”

He cradled her face in his hands, and she’d never seen his eyes so kind, so tender. “Danny’s last thought was for you and the kids. He loved you so much, Leah. That’s all you need to know about what happened that day. That’s all you need to hang on to. Let me carry the burden of remembering the hard parts, the ugly parts, for you.”

She brought her hands up to his wrists. “That’s not fair to you.”

“He’s dead and I’m alive. I’d say that’s plenty fair.”

She wasn’t sure what made her do it, but she stood up on her toes and pressed a kiss to his mouth. Maybe it was the emotional upheaval of the last few minutes. Maybe it was the way he looked at her with such tenderness, like she was the most precious thing he’d ever held in his arms. Maybe it was because she’d been yearning for the kind of connection she once shared with Danny. She’d never felt alone when he was alive. Now it was nothing but lonely days followed by even lonelier nights.

It was selfish, but for a moment, she wanted to be selfish.

Right now, she just wanted to feel something other than anger, hurt, fear, and sorrow.

Marcus’s muscles tensed as she slid her hands from his wrists to his shoulders. He wasn’t responding to her kiss.

He just stood there, all statue-like. She drew away, heat flooding into her cheeks.

Dammit, that had been stupid. “I-I shouldn’t have—”

Marcus released a shuddering breath and grabbed her around the waist with his big hands, drawing her flush against his hard body as his mouth descended on hers. He wasn’t gentle, wasn’t asking. He was taking, devouring, and nerve endings she forgot she had sparked to pleasurable life.

Every worry vaporized in the heat of his kiss. Every fear.

Every horrible image filling her mind. Everything. He made it all disappear. She gripped his shoulders, clung to him, feeling anchored for the first time in a year.

But then he released her.

The action was so abrupt she wobbled and nearly fell over. No more anchor. He’d ripped it away and left her drifting again.

Marcus stared at her with hooded eyes, his chest heaving with ragged pants. Since he wore nothing but sweatpants, it was impossible to miss how the kiss had affected him. He was aroused. Very aroused. Her gaze skimmed down to the tent at the front of his pants, and she felt an answering clench of need deep in her belly.

Marcus casually covered his erection with one hand. “I, uh, have work to do before the team gets here.”

He spun away, poised to bolt like she was a dangerous creature he had to escape. She couldn’t let him. If she let him run now, he’d keep running. That was what he always did.

“Marcus, wait.” She caught his hand and he glanced over his shoulder at her. Their gazes clashed, held. In his dark eyes, she saw the heat of desire, but also the blaze of anger. Was he angry at her? Or himself?

She dropped his hand, letting him go. He didn’t move. Just stood there, half turned away, a muscle ticking in his jaw.

“It’s not right,” he finally said so softly she wasn’t sure she’d heard him correctly.

“What?”

“It’s not right.” This time, there was no doubt in his voice. He waved a hand back and forth in the empty space between them. “This. You and me. Can’t happen.”

Code of Honor

Hornet, #4

by Tonya Burrows

Jesse Warrick used to consider himself a kickass medic, but a teammate’s brush with death has him questioning everything. Now he’s been promoted to field commander of HORNET. How can he lead when he can’t get his shit together? And how can he focus when the sexy new recruit makes him want to break the rules?

Lanie Delcambre can’t seem to find solid footing within the elite hostage rescue team. Worse, the man she’s loved for most of her life is now her boss. She’d kill to act on the chemistry between her and Jesse, but she can’t risk ruining her career.

It was only supposed to be a training mission. No live ammo, no hostages, and no real bad guys—only someone didn’t give the bad guys that memo. When their hotel is taken hostage with half of HORNET inside, Jesse and Lanie are the team’s only hope of escaping alive…

While technically this is a suspense romance, it definitely falls more on the suspense side.  It’s just stuffed full of danger, intrigue, betrayal – the action pretty much doesn’t stop once it gets started.  But there is also the long-held feelings between Lanie and Jesse that need to be addressed, as well as Jesse’s relationship with his son.  Thrown in this group of people who have between a family of sorts over the years and the feels just come at you.  Well, feels when done by Alpha males which is their own kind of weird thing that works for them 🙂

I’ll be honest, while this one can technically stand on its own it will definitely be easier to keep up if you’ve read at least Broken Honor.  There is just a lot of people and a lot of interactions between them that make more sense if you have some kind of history there.

And you better be ready to hang on to your hats because Burrows gives us one heck of a ride!  She got me from the very first page and didn’t let me go until I got to the end.  And even then she just teases about what is coming next … I’m so gonna be stalking her until she releases book 5 because I can’t wait to see where she goes from here.

Broken Honor

HORNET Book 3

by Tonya Burrows

Ice-cold and unbreakable, Travis Quinn is the HORNET team’s hard-ass. No weaknesses. Except, of course, for the accident that not only destroyed his career as a Navy SEAL, but left terrifying blanks in his memory. But Travis remembers everything about Mara Escareno—the curve of her lips, the feel of her body…and how he walked out on her suddenly six weeks ago.

Mara could never resist the dangerously sexy Travis, which is probably how she ended up pregnant and disowned by her family. But before Travis can fully process the news, Mara is kidnapped by his enemies and plunged into the violent, merciless world of human trafficking. They want Travis—and the information locked within his damaged memory—no matter the cost. And now Travis’s enemies have discovered his only weakness…Mara.

I have no idea how I missed this book – I didn’t even realize it until I sat down to read Code of Honor which is the next one in the series.  And I am super sorry it took me so long!  Burrows has always shown she knows how to deliver a satisfying mix of action, danger, and suspense with the emotional drama of a complicated love story and Broken Honor is no different.

Quinn has been trying to hide the effects of the accident that ended his career as a SEAL.  Years later and it is getting worse but he has nothing else except HORNET.  A horrible childhood with few bright spots followed by the things he’s done in his job has made connecting to people difficult for him.  He doesn’t feel himself to be a good enough for anyone … which makes his feelings for Mara even more complicated.  And, of course, he that means he took the cowards way out.

Travis may have left Mara after their week together but he’s not out of her life for good.  Finding herself pregnant with his child means that she has to contact him again … but bringing him back to her also brings his enemies.  Soon they find themselves fighting for their lives on foreign soil but the greatest danger is to their hearts.  Because while seeing Quinn in action brings home how dangerous he actually is, it also shows Mara the depth of his disregard for his own life – it’s not easy loving someone who doesn’t think they are lovable.  With time and patience, though, maybe she can show him differently.  If only they can make it out alive.

The questions over the who and what and why of Quinn’s accident come full circle here and we see some old enemies once again.  HORNET finds themselves in perilous situations with death waiting for them at every turn.  But with every battle we also get to see how much these guys mean to each other, how important the little family they’ve made with each other really is.  Full of white knuckle moments mixed with sniffles and laughs, Burrows continues to delivery enthralling military suspense romances.

(I think that the HORNET series is best enjoyed if you read all of the stories.  While they are mostly stand alones, there is flow from one book to the next with some of the characters and how consequences of past missions carry over.)

Excerpt:

A special look at Broken Honor, courtesy of Tonya Burrows:

You cut your hair.

This is one of my favorite scenes in the whole book. Quinn and Mara have been very conflicted about their relationship up until this point, but when she’s in danger, he goes charging after with his team. And Mara’s reaction when she sees him, to rub his head and comment on his haircut, is just such a touching moment between them. It’s really kind of a turning point, the start of them trying to fix the problems in their relationship.

***

The door blasted inward with a small explosion. Mara slammed her eyes shut against the blinding flash, and the other three women let out deafening screams. She wrenched her hair from a stunned Olesea’s grasp as two men in white filed into the house, rifles aimed. One shouted commands at Olesea in Russian. The other moved toward Mara with single-minded intent in his shadowed eyes.

No. No, dammit. She was not going to Dubai. This was not how it was going to end for her.

She knocked the bucket of dirty water into his path, then bolted toward the kitchen at the back of the house, intent on getting her hands on the butcher knife she’d been planning to steal since she first saw it, the one that Olesea hung right out in the open by the kitchen sink like a taunt. The knife wouldn’t do her a lick of good if one of the white-clad men decided to shoot her, but it didn’t matter. She needed a weapon. She would fight for her baby until the very last breath left her lungs—and then she’d come back and haunt her murderer’s ass.

A third man caught her around the waist just on the other side of the kitchen door. She kicked and screamed and clawed at his white-and-gray-paint-smeared face, but his hard arms only tightened around her.

The man chasing her skidded to a stop. “Got her?”

“Yeah. Go help the others, Ian. We have incoming,” the man holding her responded, and every muscle in her body went to water at the sound of his voice. She sagged, her legs no longer able to hold her upright. As he easily took her weight and scooped her up in his arms, his hood fell off his head.

Travis. Under all of that war paint and white winter gear, it really was him. He’d found her.

“You cut your hair.” Such a stupid thing to say, but it was the first thing that popped into her dazed mind. She lifted a hand and rubbed her palm over the prickly dark blond stubble. His eyes closed and the room, the noise from the rest of the house—it all vanished with his soft exhale.

It was just the two of them in that moment.

The outside cold clung to his coat, but she huddled closer until her nose touched the bare skin of his neck. Oh, his scent. Sandalwood and a dark, warm spice. She breathed it in and wanted to hold it—hold him—inside her forever.

Tears blurred her vision. “Travis…”

He said nothing, but his arms tightened around her in a fierce hug, and for the first time since Zaryanko took them captive, she felt truly safe.

Book Review – Honor Reclaimed

You guys don’t know how excited I was to get a copy of this book.  We first met the HORNET guys in SEAL of Honor (where Seth was mentioned but didn’t really make an appearance) and then Seth himself (very quickly) in Wilde Nights in Paradise.  But even with that little peek readers knew that his story was going to be … hard.  Hard and worth every minute.  Check out the book and my review below!

*****

HR500Honor Reclaimed

by Tonya Burrows

Former Marine scout sniper Seth Harlan is new to HORNET and anxious to prove he can still do his job despite an ongoing battle with PTSD. He remembers all too well what it’s like to sit inside an enemy camp, praying for rescue and waiting for death. So when a black ops soldier contacts HORNET to rescue a buddy who was left behind, all sorts of nasty memories strain his newfound stability.

When an interview with a runaway Afghan child bride leads photojournalist Phoebe Leighton to an arms deal involving a suitcase bomb powerful enough to wipe out a mid-sized town, she realizes this is one battle she can’t win on her own. Forming an unlikely alliance with a ragtag team of military and government delinquents, she meets Seth, a sniper carrying as many emotional scars as physical, who impresses her with his steely will and ignites passions within her she thought long dead.

Suddenly this mission is about a lot more than an abandoned soldier. Racing against the clock, Seth, Phoebe, and the rest of HORNET struggle to stop that bomb before it reaches it’s final destination: The United States.

Writing has always been my one true love. I wrote my first novel-length story in 8th grade and haven’t put down my pen since. I received a B.A. in creative writing from SUNY Oswego and I’m now working on a MFA in popular fiction at Seton Hill University.

When I’m not writing, I spend my time reading, painting (badly), exploring new places, and enjoying time with my family. Give me a good horror movie over a chick flick any day. (And, let’s be honest, I’ll take a bad horror movie too!) I’m a geek at heart and pledge my avid TV fandom to Supernatural and Doctor Who. I’m also a big fan of The Voice. What can I say? Guilty pleasure.

Review:

In Wilde Nights in Paradise, I said that Seth’s story was going to break my heart … I just didn’t realize that it was going to rip it right out of my chest.  I sat glued to the pages, turning them as fast as I could, with my throat clogged up and loving every minute of it.

Seth is troubled, understandably so after months of torture while a POW in Afghanistan, and he is trying his best to find a place for himself in the world.  He’s amazingly strong to have survived everything that happened to him and decide to keep going, but with a lot of issues that he’s letting overwhelm him, so he’s not really thriving.  It’s a difficult thing, trying to fit in again, and his struggles just hurt me.  It’s one of those things that is difficult to read but you feel so engaged in him and his story that you just can’t put it down.

Phoebe is about the only person who understands Seth and he takes comfort in her presences.  But her secret is a pretty big one – one that has impacted both of their lives.  She’s become a better person because of her past and she’s got a huge heart, which might be the only thing to help Seth on his way back to some form of normality.

Like the first HORNET book, SEAL of Honor, we’re giving insights into the other members of the team and some hints at future stories.  Burrowes’ two series (HORNET and Wilde) overlap, so we get a look at some of the Wilde brothers as well.  They are a complex and troubled group, one promising to provide a lot of material for both series.

As long as you are ok with an emotional rollercoaster, Honor Reclaimed is definitely worth the effort.  The ending absolutely slayed me and I think it will be a while before I let that one go, but it was everything I hoped it would be and I’m definitely looking forward to the next book in the series.

SEAL of Honor

Book Review, Hornet Series, SEAL of Honor, Tonya Burrows

SOH

SEAL of Honor is the first book in Tonya Burrows’s Hornet series – one sure to please those who enjoy an enticing mix of military, mystery and love.  Gabe Bristow only knows how to be a Navy SEAL, but after an accident leaves him without a career, he flounders trying to figure out what to do with his life.  Like a gift, he’s given the opportunity to head a private hostage rescue team, only to find it’s filled with misfits – a drunk linguist, a nerdy ex-CIA analyst, a former FBI negotiator, a cowboy medic, and an explosives expert that might be more volatile than any bomb.  Now they have to figure out how to work together to find Audrey Van Amee’s kidnapped brother, without getting themselves killed.  And Gabe has to keep a professional distance from the very sexy Audrey, not easy when she insists on getting involved in her brother’s case.

All around SEAL of Honor is a fast-paced, captivating read – the characters are larger than life but sexy especially if you like your men big and bad, the suspense is well-developed and comes together very succinctly, the danger seems real and keeps you holding on, and the romance has just that right amount of zing and emotion.  Each of the Hornet team members left their former position under less than stellar circumstances and has the emotional & physical scars to prove it.  Add in the fact that they are all very Alpha, from different backgrounds, never worked together before … definitely a powder keg.  They sucked me in and I’m very much looking forward to getting the scoop on all of Gabe’s team in future books.  There is also a guarantee of adding even more members to the Hornet team, which can only lead to good things.

SEAL of Honor is perfect for those who look for bolder, edge of your seat summer reads filled with colorful characters and riveting story-lines.
