Protected from Evil

Blade & Arrow Shadow Team series

by Gia Cobie

Blurb:

A terrible betrayal cost me everything.

My home. My job. My reputation. My so-called friends.

Scared, hurting, the life I’d worked so hard for in shambles, there seemed no better option than to leave.

After years of city life, the idea of escaping to the small town of Williston seemed appealing. So I picked up and moved there to take a job at the local diner. It might not have been what I’d trained for, but I came to enjoy it.

Something else I enjoyed? Talking to Webb—my favorite customer, the most handsome man I’d ever met, and a man I might have considered dating if things were different.

Ever since I met Noelle at the diner, it’s become my favorite place to visit.

And if she gave any sign of being interested, I’d ask her out in a second.

As we grow closer, I can tell she’s keeping a secret. I’m worried, but I don’t know her well enough to push. Not until I find her hurt and and humiliated and crying in the diner bathroom, that is. Not until I find out the truth of why she left her old life behind.

Noelle needs someone who believes in her. Someone who’ll do anything to protect her. And with the help of my Blade and Arrow teammates, I intend to do just that.

Protected from Evil is a steamy he-falls-first story featuring a former Night Stalker, a scared but strong heroine, a team of Army veterans, found family, forced proximity, thrilling twists, and a guaranteed HEA. Can be read as a standalone.

Review:

**minor spoilers**

Unfortunately, this wasn’t my favorite of Cobie’s stories, which was disappointing because I love Webb & Noelle. Things were a little awkward in places. While I love the idea of Webb being a little uncertain, a little less confident going into his first serious relationship, I would have preferred for him to get more comfortable in his wooing a little quicker. Is it realistic? Yes. Is it what I would expect from this kind of story? Not so much. You imagine these guys to be a bit more take charge and assured.

And like the last one, if you find your bad guy at about the 2/3 mark there’s going to be another at the end 🙂 So it wasn’t a surprise that something else was coming, which was a bit of a bummer. But I was engaged in the mystery itself. I was pulled in, especially in the last third, and I felt like Cobie did a fantastic job of keeping things suspenseful and the danger level high for me.

But even if they sometimes seem a bit formulaic, I really look forward to Cobie’s stories. I like her characters, and there’s plenty of opportunity to get to know them as they spend time together while they work to figure out whatever suspense element is involved. And so far, all of those parts have worked for me. The bad guys make sense and she does a good job of giving a feeling of risk. I’ll definitely continue to add all of her books to my TBR as soon as I find them.

Protected from Villainy

Blade & Arrow Shadow Team series

by Gia Cobie

Blurb:

As soon as I heard the news, I knew it had to be wrong.

Bea? A killer? Impossible.

Not the sweet therapist who gently bullied me into recovery and never gave up on me, no matter how grouchy I was. She believed in me even when I didn’t believe in myself. And I wouldn’t be where I am now without her.

Helping Bea means breaking the law. It means asking my Blade and Arrow teammates to risk their freedom, if we’re caught. But the idea of leaving Bea on her own is unthinkable. So, with my friends’ help, we race to stage a daring rescue before it’s too late.

I woke up from one nightmare only to be thrust into another.

First witness to a horrific crime; now accused of being the one who did it.

On top of that, my protector is a man I never expected to see again. I thought about Indy from time to time—wondering, worrying, even toying with the idea of checking up on him. But I never, ever imagined I’d wake up on the other side of the country after he abducted me.

I want to be angry with him for what he did, even though he claims he’s just trying to help me. But it’s really hard to stay mad at Indy when he’s the only one who makes me feel safe.

Protected from Villainy features a wounded warrior hero, a sweet and strong heroine with struggles of her own, forced proximity, found family, a security team of Army veterans, and plenty of sweet and steamy moments. Can be read as a standalone and an HEA guaranteed!

Review:

I really enjoy Cobie’s stories and was so happy for Indy to get his own story after seeing him in Protected from Malice. He struggled so much after losing his hand, falling into depression and anger, but is starting to find his way again thanks to his work with Blade & Arrow. And he’s going to use his skills to protect the one woman he can’t forget, spiriting her off in the dark to keep her safe.

As they give in to the pull between them, Indy & Bea help each other feel more confidence in themselves & their attraction. The relationship they develop together may be fast, but it works on building on their previous connection. While there is no third act breakup, when you are about 2/3 way thru and you find your baddie you know that something more is coming. Cobie makes it work like she always does 🙂

I find Cobie’s stories a well-balanced mix of suspense, action, steam, and emotion. Her bad guy works, the way we get there flows well, and the team is always fun to read. We’ve got a few more guys that need a book and I’ll be first in line.

Protected from Malice

Blade & Arrow Shadow Team

by Gia Cobie

Blurb:

At first, I thought it was just paranoia.

It wouldn’t be the first time, after all. Ever since that night two years ago, I’ve never felt completely safe. So I convinced myself the strange sense of being watched was all in my head. My PTSD flaring up just as it had in the past.

Then I was nearly run off the road on my way home from work, and as much as I wished it was just a coincidence, I knew it wasn’t.

I could go to the police, but I wanted someone I trusted to help me.

So I called Rafe. My brother’s former teammate and best friend. And—though I’d never let on for a second—the man who’d held my heart ever since I met him.

As soon as Eden told me she was in trouble, I dropped everything to help her.

“Maybe it’s nothing,” she told me. “But things have been happening.”

I didn’t need to hear more. If Eden needed me, I would be there. And if someone was bothering her, I’d teach them that they messed with the wrong woman. Because as a bounty hunter and former Green Beret, I’m the last person they want to piss off.

When I arrive in Portland to find Eden terrified and in danger, every protective instinct comes roaring to the surface. And I’m furious that someone would dare try to hurt her.

I’m not the white knight I always thought Eden deserved. Far from it. But I’m a dangerous man when someone I care about is threatened. And Eden? I’ll do anything to protect her.

Protected from Malice is a slow burn friends-to-lovers story with a morally grey hero who’ll do anything to protect the people he loves, a brave and intelligent heroine, a team of Army veterans, thrilling twists, and plenty of sweet and steamy moments. No cliffhangers and a happily-ever-after guaranteed!

Review:

I’m really enjoying these stories from Cobie, although she does put her heroines through a whole lot 🙂 Poor Eden just doesn’t catch a break, but she does have a great team to back her up. Between Rafe & her brother & their friends, they’ll figure out exactly what’s going on and keep her safe.

Eden is dealing with some heavy stuff and calls in Rafe when it becomes obvious that she needs help, and he calls for more help when things get even more serious. Time spent together as they try to figure out who wants to hurt her has Eden and Rafe growing closer and the guys finding a new purpose post-military.

Protected From Malice is the beginning of a new series, but with guys that returning readers will recognize from some of the previous stories. And will be happy to see getting a series of their own. One that includes all the slow burn heat, suspense and danger that Cobie’s other books are known for. Definitely looking forward to the rest of the guys getting their HEA.

Review – Jessica’s Hero

Jessica’s Hero

Heroes of Sleepy Hollow #6

by Gia Cobie

Blurb:

Seventeen years ago, I made a terrible mistake.

One I never imagined could have such horrible consequences.

But I thought—I hoped—that time would bring forgiveness. That people would realize I was just a foolish girl back then and not the responsible woman I’ve become.

I was wrong. Instead, I can’t go a day without someone in town reminding me of what a bad person I am. I can’t avoid the judging looks and whispered insults and insinuations that I’d be better off if I’d just leave Sleepy Hollow for good.

Except I can’t. And I don’t want to. Not when Sleepy Hollow is the only place that’s ever felt like home. But when the threats turn dangerous, I know it’s time to ask for help. The only problem? No one believes me.

It all started when I found Jess crying in her car outside the police station.

I couldn’t believe it when she told me she’d been turned away by the very department I work for. And worse yet, she wasn’t even surprised by it.

At first, it seems like someone’s trying to scare Jess out of town. Then it becomes clear their intentions are much more sinister, and the threats against her keep escalating.

I don’t care what other people in town say about her. All I care about is that Jess needs me.

As a police officer, it’s my job to protect. But when it comes to Jess, it’s so much more than a job. It’s protecting the woman I’m falling in love with.

Jessica’s Hero is a small-town romantic suspense with a protective police officer hero, a wounded heroine in search of redemption, action and danger, forced proximity, thrilling twists, and plenty of sweet and steamy moments. Can be read as a standalone novel.

Review:

Kane is pretty much perfect (which may be annoying to some) as a boyfriend – sweet and supportive. He is a bit of a love bomber and can be a bit pushy as well as fretful about how he’s received but he means well. He works hard to lift Jessica up and help her find confidence in herself again.

Even tho we get Kane’s perspective, it really felt like Jessica’s story and I felt so bad for her. People can be small minded and hold on to things for a long time (although I am surprised that no one stepped up for her before Kane). I can also understand why she would feel self-conscious and anxious. Between her school mates & an absolutely awful man, it’s really hard to let some of that go but with Kane’s help she starts to see herself as strong and beautiful.

I enjoyed the suspense element of the story. The culprit was a surprise to me but it wasn’t totally out of left field, which can easily happen when an author tries to surprise readers. I was satisfied with how things are wrapped up, both with the romance and the mystery.

Guarded From Havoc

Blade and Arrow Security Bravo Team #6

by Gia Cobie

Blurb:

I knew it was a risk venturing over to my new neighbor’s cabin during the storm.

After all, I barely knew him. All I’d learned from our chance meeting in the woods was that he was visiting the Adirondacks on a well-deserved vacation, he used to serve in the Army, and he was the most handsome man I’d ever seen.

The last part definitely made the whole knocking on a near-stranger’s door offering food and flashlights idea more appealing.

When he invited me inside, I nearly said no. But there was just something about Erik that told me I could trust him. That if I didn’t accept his offer, I’d end up regretting it.

Then four masked intruders stormed the cabin, with both of us in it. And nothing could have prepared me for what would come next.

I should have been able to defend myself from anything.

I used to be Special Forces, after all. Now I work for one of the top private security companies in the country. But when Tatum’s life was threatened, I had no choice but to concede. To accept whatever was waiting for me after.

Waking up in the middle of the woods with an unconscious Tatum nearby wasn’t a promising start.

Finding out we’ve been dumped into the middle of a sinister game is even worse. A deadly game it’s clear we’re not supposed to survive.

But there’s no way I’m letting anything else happen to Tatum. I’m getting her out of here, no matter what it takes. And once we escape, I’m going to see her again. Because I’m not losing the first woman I could see a future with.

Review:

I think the blurb is a little off. I went into it thinking it would be mostly about them trying to survive, while falling in love of course, and then bringing the bad guys to justice. And it does happen, but not in proportions I expected. It was about 25% getting kidnapped, surviving, & then rescued. The next 50% or so was the guys working together to figure out who did it, helping Tatum come to terms with the experience, and falling for each other. The last bit was wrapping up their romance and everything that has happened & where their future is going. I enjoyed it but I think that there was a little disappointment over the limited action after that first bit.

Buuuut if I had gone into it with the proper expectations I think it would have hit even better. Because I like these two. Erik is sweet and caring, obviously loved by the guys on his team and their spouses, very capable in the field and eventually as a boyfriend. Tatum is amazingly strong, doing all the things to work through what she’s experienced, as well as being there to support Erik when he needs it.

Overall, Guarded From Havoc is a really enjoyable read but slower paced with less of the danger element that I expected. I just think that readers need to approach it as a slower paced romance and not the romantic suspense it originally comes across as.

(Part of a series but can be read as a stand alone.)

Mountain Defender

Green Mountain Guardians series

by Gia Cobie

Blurb:

I thought I’d come to terms with my solitary existence.

Most days, I even told myself I preferred it.

After all, the dogs at my shelter didn’t ask questions about my appearance. They didn’t stare at my scars. They didn’t make me feel ugly.

Then I met Gage. He came to the shelter to adopt a dog, but even after that, he kept returning. Was he just coming to help, like he claimed? Or could I dare hope he wanted to spend time with me?

Would he? Handsome, brave, heroic Gage, who could have any woman he wanted? Could he possibly see me as more than just the quiet, reclusive woman who ran the dog rescue outside town? More than the scarred woman everyone else looked away from?

I liked Rory from the first time I met her.

How could I not? She was caring. Smart. Beautiful. Even though I knew it couldn’t go anywhere, it didn’t stop me from wanting to spend time with her.

Friends was enough, I told myself over and over. It was all I could offer. It was all my wounded self-esteem would allow me.

Until I found her unconscious and injured in the woods, with no memory of how she got there. Until I held her in my arms and realized I’d do anything to protect her. Until I realized just being friends wasn’t enough.

But first, I need to make sure she’s safe. That the person who hurt her is caught. And I’ll draw on all the skills I learned in the Special Forces, along with the help of my Green Mountain Guardians teammates, to make sure no one hurts her again.

Review:

Often in these kinds of stories the suspense part is what brings the couple together and I always think of the beginning of Speed 2 when Annie says that “relationships based on extreme circumstances never work out” 🙂 Here Rory and Gage develop a friendship over weeks of him coming to her dog rescue to help out so there was a good basis for their interactions and their deepening feelings. But both have some insecurities that they need to work out and time spent together figuring out what’s going on allows them to come to terms with them.

I did feel like A LOT happened to poor Rory in a short amount of time but everything worked for me. I liked the villain, the reasons why, and how it all played out. Nothing seemed to be a stretch and I liked the way the guys worked together to keep her safe & figure out what was going on.

I had two things going into this – it’d been a while since I’d read a romantic suspense and this is the first story I’ve read by Cobie … and I think I need more of both! I feel like she blended the romance element and the suspense portion well, giving each the necessary time & attention. This seems to be her thing so I’ll definitely be keeping an eye on Cobie and picking up more of her books.

FTC Disclaimer

I have received ARCs of books free from NetGalley (and many moons ago from BookTrib.com) to review but the majority of the stories are either bought by me or provided for free from the publisher, author, or PR company. The opinions I share are my own and in no way are influenced by an author or publisher. There is no promise of a positive review by any party and there is no additional compensation. Unless otherwise noted, I am not affiliated with any contest or other event mentioned on this blog and I do not receive a paid endorsement for any post.
