Nothing to Fear

A Blackbridge Novel

by Claire Boston

The gifts were innocent… at first.

All Hannah Novak wants to do is to live a simple life, but her traumatic past refuses to let go. Her trust in men is at an all-time low, but when she becomes the target of a dangerous stalker she’s forced into close proximity with the sexy new cop in town.

Ryan Kilpatrick has travelled across the country to get away from his manipulative ex-wife. Now, all he wants is to build a stable, loving home for his son. The last thing he needs is to be attracted to the secretive Hannah but he’s duty-bound to protect her.

As the stalker’s gifts turn nasty, and time is running out, Hannah must face her fears and learn to trust again. Because if she doesn’t, she may not get a second chance.

I have been a fan of Claire Boston since I read What Goes on Tour (LOVE you Adrian!) and so I’m always excited to get a chance to read one of her books.  She does a great job of delivering not only a darn good love story but also creating a dynamic world full of interesting characters.  Occasionally she likes to throw in some suspense or danger just to keep you on your toes 😉

With Nothing to Fear we get a group of friends that have been together for decades and they are still there to support one another every day.  That connection has helped prop up Hannah since her father murdered her mother and assaulted in college.  She’s managed to keep the latter a secret but she’s relied on her friends to keep her going.  Now there’s a threat and she going to have to face her past whether she’s ready or not.

Ryan is new in town and finds himself drawn to Hannah.  Obviously something has happened to her to make her so skittish but he’s such a patient man that he’s willing to wait her out.  He’s had a history of his own so it helps him understand exactly what she needs.

While the love story and Hannah coming to terms with her past is very well done, add in the mystery of who is leaving her gifts and I couldn’t turn pages fast enough!  Boston does a great job of balancing both and keeping your attention until you get to the bitter end.  It’s not an easy journey for Hannah but with her support in place and by listening to both her head & her heart she can overcome anything.

The Flanagan Sisters #4

by Claire Boston

Sean Flanagan has spent a lifetime alone and rejected, constantly hiding who he really is.

With a father who deserted him and a mother who despised him, Sean didn’t think things could get much worse … until he was kicked out of home for being gay. Now he’s discovered he has three half-sisters on the other side of the world. This might be his last chance to find people who will love and accept him. But he’s terrified that if they find out who he really is then they’ll reject him like the rest of his family.

Sean arrives in Houston and is stunned by the warm welcome he receives from his sisters. He begins to hope that maybe this time things will be different. That’s when he meets Hayden Johnson. To follow his heart means risking everything with his newfound family.

Hayden is tired of endless dating. He’s looking for a man to love, someone to spend the rest of his life with. His boss’s new brother ticks all the boxes on the attraction scale, but there’s just one problem – he’s not gay.

Will Sean let his fears rule him, or will he let in the chance of love and find a place where he belongs?

I love this family and it is only getting better with the addition of Sean.  Those that have read the rest of The Flanagan Sisters series will know what to expect – great characters, smooth writing, and a realistic story that draws you in from the start.  Boston hasn’t turned away from difficult issues before and she doesn’t here either.  She does a great job of putting a face to some hard social issues – like homosexuality, homelessness, teen pregnancy, abuse.

I feel so bad for Sean, that he thinks he has to hide his sexuality and that’s he’s afraid that he won’t be loved if anyone finds out.  I know that this isn’t such an uncommon thing, even today (or maybe especially today), but it breaks my heart to have it laid out so well and with such an endearing character.  Boston does an amazing job of capturing his fear and showing us why he feels the way he does.  You know that he’s wrong about the Flanagan’s but he doesn’t and she makes sure you understand that.

Hayden has a lot of patience and is willing to give Sean the time he needs to see that it’s OK to be gay, that his newfound family will still accept him.  It’s not easy to hide their attraction but he’s willing to do it for now.  It’s a nice contrast of the man who feels comfortable with who he is, loved and accepted by his friends & family, with the man who has been shunned for the same thing.

While Hayden is just so completely awesome (which returning readers already know), it is really Sean’s journey that we are here for.  The moment that Sean realizes that he’s going to be OK is so touching and, as he gets some resolution with his present and his past, you feel such joy for him to be able to have that.  Even while it is a heartbreaker that he had to be there at all.

Although this is part of a series, it isn’t necessary to have read the rest to enjoy this story but it will help you understand the rest of the characters.  And they are such great stories, so why wouldn’t you want to read them all!

The Flanagan Sisters #3

by Claire Boston

Blurb:

They’re from the opposite ends of town but they’re worlds apart.

Zita Flanagan wants more. She wants to help more Central American refugees and make more of an impact. But her family comes first and fulfilling her own dreams seems impossible.

David Randall leads a privileged life and knows nothing about refugee issues. When he meets dynamic, sexy Zita, it seems like the perfect opportunity to learn. Zita’s passion for helping those less fortunate and her selfless devotion to the girls her mother fosters brings David’s life sharply into perspective.

Zita soon realizes that David is so much more than a rich boy. She begins to trust him with her foster sisters’ stories, and her own hopes and dreams. But when David’s father announces he’s running for governor and the focus of his campaign is the ‘refugee problem’, Zita has grave concerns for her sisters’ safety. Then David’s betrayal exposes secrets, and it becomes a race against time to save lives.

Can David convince Zita to trust him again, or will his mistake put the life of the woman he loves in jeopardy?

I knew when I met David in Change of Heart that Boston just HAD to bring him back for his own story.  And since there was just one sister left … tada!  🙂

I really like David and the moments of introspection he goes thru – not only does he have to evaluate his own life, but also that of his family.  Time with Zita shakes things up for him and not just romantically.  Seeing firsthand everything that her family does to support their foster girls gives him access to a world he knows nothing about and that is deeply affecting many people today (especially in this election year).  I think that Boston handles it well – never getting too preachy but giving her readers a feel for the personal side around immigration.

Zita has taken on a lot of her family’s work with the foster girls.  Being the only one at home, with her sisters living their own lives (but helping in their own way), puts a lot of strain on her.  She feels like she HAS to do so much for her mom that she can’t pursue her own wants and dreams.  I totally get where she’s coming from and I love how supportive her family & David are when it becomes obvious she wants to help in a different way.

I am also pleased that we got that little bit of danger like we had in Break the Rules, as it added just a little bit extra to an already emotionally packed story.  It fits well with the story and also gives Zita a chance to shine a bit more, while giving David that redeeming (and humbling) moment he needs.  She’s the one that has to be in charge here and he is strong enough to recognize it & support her.

The things that the foster girls and the Flanagan women deal with is not easy and Boston doesn’t really soften it much for you.  These are horrible situations and a touchy one for many people.  You have to be OK with taking on a lot of heartache with your HEA, but you’ll definitely be glad you did.

(While the story can stand on its own, returning readers will appreciate seeing more of the characters they’ve grown to love and getting to know Zita & David even better.  Plus, we get a peek at the next Flanagan … and it isn’t a sister  🙂 )

Change-of-Heart-mediumChange of Heart

The Flanagan Sisters Series

by Claire Boston

Software billionaire Carly Flanagan has an abundance of everything except time.

With everyone wanting a piece of her, or more accurately, her money, she spends her days trying to live up to her company’s motto of Community, Sharing, Support. Having always been so focused on responsibility, success and supporting those less fortunate than her, Carly’s forgotten to consider what she wants for herself in life – until she meets Evan.

Evan Hayes is an artist and free spirit, and when they meet at a local art exhibition, he is immediately intrigued by Carly. He sees through her public persona, realizing she is not the person she portrays. Evan’s the type of man who doesn’t have a lot, but is perfectly comfortable with who he is. A man who knows what he wants – and he wants Carly.

Carly is sure Evan wants something else from her. Everyone does. All Evan is asking is the chance to get to know her, but will Carly let him in? Or will a lifetime of protecting herself prove too hard to overcome?

I’ve read quite a few of Boston’s books and I’ve loved every one of them.  The funny thing is I forget how much until I crack one open and find myself sucked in.  So I think I just need to quit even reading the blurbs and pick up anything with her name on the cover 🙂

We got to know Carly just a little bit in Break the Rules and I was very curious to find out more about this Flanagan.  She seemed like a bit of a contradiction – I couldn’t decide if she was reserved or uppity or just busy.  Turned out she was a bit shy and a lot busy.

She’s super gifted with coding and she’s big about giving back to the community.  A refugee as a child she’s intimately familiar with their plight and works with her family to help others like her.  She’s also working with other developers in the community that need a leg up.  She had someone who showed her the ropes and it made all the difference so she wants to be that person to others.  And because she feels like she’s been given so much, she finds it hard to say no when people ask her for things.  Add in all that she’s responsible for as head of her company and she has very little time for herself.

Then she meets Evan at an art event (one of those things she had a hard time saying no to) and she’s drawn to him … but heartbreak in her past has made her gun-shy when it comes to men.

Evan is doing whatever he can to make a living as an artist.  An exhibit of up-and-coming artists introduces him to Carly and he’s drawn to the sexy, strong woman.  While it seems like it might be a little hard to break thru her walls, a little perseverance pays off and soon they are spending time together, when they can with all of her obligations.  Talented but not flighty like you’d expect an artist to be, Evan proves that he sees Carly as no one else has, easily fitting in.  Which has her evaluating her life and what she wants from it.  And him.

I love these two together.  How they have a rhythm that works and how they complement each other so well – the fresh perspective that he brings to her life and the support that she brings to his, making two independent lives work without either of them losing who they are.  I can’t wait to see what Boston has for the next Flanagan!

Book Review, Break the Rules, Claire Boston, The Flanagan Sisters series

Claire Boston took a few minutes to stop by today and share with us a look at her new series.  Book 1 is releasing today so I know this is a big day for her!

We’ve seen The Texan Quartet and I have to say I’m thrilled that she’s got a new series starting.  It’s set in Houston, the same as the other, but this first book is a fresh start so new readers are good to go.  Although if you haven’t picket up the others, you are definitely missing out!

*****

At first glance, an oil refinery doesn’t seem to be a great place to set a romance. What’s romantic about loud machinery, bad smells and manual labor? Well after ten years working in a similar environment I thought it might be a nice change of setting from your typical office romance. I was particularly tired of the alpha-male boss and secretary scenario, so I decided to make my heroine a competent, take-no-prisoners woman who isn’t interested in a romance with her new boss – no matter what her hormones are telling her. It was fun to play with Bridget and Jack as they each worked through their feelings, not just about their jobs, but about each other as well. And with all that dangerous equipment around… who knows what could happen?

At least until Monday morning when she discovers Jack is her new boss. There’s no way she’s going to keep seeing him, no matter the connection between them. She’s been burned before.

Jack can’t understand why Bridget’s so against their relationship. They positively sizzled during their one night together. He knows he has to be careful now she reports to him, but she tempts him in every way.

Excerpt:

Bridget Flanagan’s head thumped in time to the booming dance music. She shouldn’t have let her best friend Tanya convince her to go clubbing.

She sighed. Who was she kidding? Tanya could convince her to do almost anything, and the promise of a girls’ night to dance, drink, and forget her troubles sounded like just what she’d needed.

But her head had begun to throb almost immediately and Tanya had found a new friend. It was a shame Sally and Trish hadn’t been able to come out tonight. At least then she’d have someone to talk with. Bridget scanned the dance floor, spotting Tanya dancing with the guy she’d picked up. So much for the girls’ night.

She shouldn’t be surprised. Tanya did tend to forget everything when a cute guy walked by. Knowing better than to try to drag her out of the club, Bridget headed for the bar and ordered a glass of water. When it arrived, she moved away, taking a sip and willing her headache away. Tanya looked like she was going to dance all night.

“Is that your friend dancing with my brother?” The male voice was loud but sexy and his breath tickled her ear.

Bridget jumped and turned so she was face to face with a man who did not slow her pulse rate at all. He was slightly taller than she was, with thick brown hair and dark eyes that smiled. Yum.

He pointed toward Tanya and leaned closer to be heard over the music. “Is your friend the blonde in the red dress?”

Bridget nodded. “That’s Tanya.”

“I don’t suppose she’ll turn into a pumpkin by midnight?” He had a hopeful look on his face.

Bridget grimaced. “Not a chance. I wish she would.” She put the glass up to her forehead and sighed at the coolness. “What about your brother?”

“His motto is ‘all night long’.” He frowned. “Perhaps we can convince them to go somewhere quieter at least, somewhere with some seating.”

She was intrigued. Why had he come out if he didn’t want to dance? “You don’t feel like partying?”

“I moved back to Houston from Australia two days ago. My body hasn’t quite adjusted yet.”

The mention of his body had Bridget checking it out again. It looked perfectly fine to her. His blue jeans fit in all the right places and the button-down black shirt clung to his well-defined chest. She cleared her throat. “There’s a bar around the corner. The music is quieter but they can still dance if they want.”

“Shall we give it a go?”

“Sure.” Bridget put her glass on the bar and followed him to where Tanya and his brother were dancing. She couldn’t hear what he said but they nodded in response. As he turned back to her, Tanya gave her a very unsubtle thumbs up. Bridget ignored her. All she wanted to do was find some quiet and get rid of her headache.

Outside the club, her ears adjusted to the blissful reduction in noise and she took a deep breath.

“Bridge, this is Hal,” Tanya chirped.

Hal was slightly taller than his brother, maybe six foot two, with the same thick brown hair and dark eyes.

Bridget forced a smile. “Nice to meet you.”

Tanya raised her eyebrows, waiting expectantly. “Who’s this?” she nodded to Hal’s brother.

Bridget shrugged apologetically. “We didn’t swap names. I’m Bridget.”

“Jack.” He smiled at her and she forgot her pounding head for a moment. It was some smile, lighting up his eyes and sending a lovely warmth through her body.

“Great. Now let’s find something to drink,” Tanya said, and keeping her hand tightly in Hal’s, she led the way to the bar. Hal didn’t seem to mind.

Bridget walked alongside Jack, not sure what to say. Now she was out of the noise she realized she’d effectively been picked up. Was this some kind of scam the brothers had going? Find two girls and take them somewhere quieter?

She snuck a look at Jack. No, he really did look as tired as she felt.

They walked past a drugstore. “Wait a second, I’ve got to grab something.” Bridget dashed inside, found the painkillers and bought a packet. When she went back outside, Jack was the only one waiting for her.

“Where’s Tanya?”

“They went on ahead. I thought I’d wait.”

Bridget tamped down her annoyance. They’d only just met these guys, and while they seemed nice, they could be anyone. Tanya should be more careful. “Thanks.”

Inside the bar, they found a table away from the music. It was quieter than the nightclub and they could talk without shouting. Bridget ordered a glass of water and a coffee, and took two pills. Hopefully they would kick in quickly.

Tanya put her drink on the table and grabbed Hal’s hand. “I love this song.” She pulled him away to the small dance floor.

Bridget slid on to a chair next to Jack who was nursing his cup of coffee. She had to say something, otherwise this was going to get awkward fast.

Review:

I know that it works for the story but I’m not sure that dating your supervisor is ever in anyone’s best interest 🙂  But Bridget definitely has more reason than most to avoid it, thanks to a horrible experience at her last job.  The connection with Jack is strong though and so many things seem to want to push them together, but I’m with her on not wanting to get involved with her boss.  Besides her bad luck the last time she did it, she’s already got some troubles being taken seriously by the good ol’ boy contingent.  With a less skilled writer, I think that the inter-office problems could easily have been boring, but Boston makes them interesting and you get offended for Bridget every time someone blows her off or says something rude.

Unfortunately for Bridget (but good for us) Jack is really hard to resist.  He’s sexy, smart, and kind.  He listens to her, takes her & their jobs seriously, and tries to be understanding of her concerns (while still trying to find a way around them, of course 🙂 ).  He may not have the hesitation to get involved with a coworker but he does respect her enough to take her concerns into consideration.

Since these two are safety experts at an oil refinery you know that something has to go wrong and when it does it will be big.  But, like with everything that Boston does, it is handled in a way that keeps you reading but doesn’t come off as overly dramatic.  Sometimes it seems like a story is dangerous or suspenseful just to be sensational but it makes sense here.  It is the culmination of everything we see coming but it also means that things are wrapped up nicely and we’re left satisfied.

I’m curious where Boston goes with Bridget’s sisters because they all seem so different.  They are sassy and smart and don’t need a man, but that doesn’t mean that their lives couldn’t be better with someone to be there for them and to shake things up!

The Texan Quartet series

by Claire Boston

Excerpt:

Piper Atkinson uses the truth as a weapon, but her latest interview candidate is more than just a headline.

Piper wants to be the kind of journalist who makes people sit up and take notice of the issues, and in Houston, Texas, there are plenty to go around. In the city’s high-end restaurant world, reclusive Native American chef Taima Woods is discussed in reverential whispers, so when the opportunity to interview him arrives, Piper jumps at it.

But getting to Tai is tougher than she expected. He has a deep mistrust of reporters, and a private life he’d prefer to keep hidden. There are two passions in Tai’s life – his cooking and his tribe – and he means to keep it that way. But the closer Tai gets to Piper, the closer he comes to conceding a third.

Through Tai, Piper discovers a world she knew nothing about – a damaged and ostracized community in need of a voice. But the more Piper wants to help them, the more Tai understands that to love Piper is to turn his back on his people.

Will Tai reject the one woman who’s ever understood him? Or can Piper show him that hardening his heart helps no one?

Excerpt:

Chapter 1

The bar was one of those hip places where the design was minimal and the prices were maximal. The tables were small to encourage intimate groups and conversations. Piper Atkinson scanned the faces in the dim lighting, hoping to catch sight of her friend, George. Stagehands were checking the microphone and equipment up front. George would be somewhere nearby, perhaps giving his client Adahy some last-minute words of encouragement.

Piper hadn’t heard the singer yet, but Adahy had played at her friend Elle’s café and she’d said he was fabulous. A fusion of modern music with Native American beats.

Close to the stage there was an empty table with a reserved sign on it. It was probably reserved for George.

She ordered a drink and something to eat, and stood at the bar, waiting.

“Is your daddy a baker? Because you’ve got a nice set of buns!” a deep male voice behind her said.

Piper rolled her eyes and debated whether to ignore the pickup line or tell the guy off, when someone grabbed her butt. She whirled and slapped at the hand. “What the hell are you doing?”

The man who’d both groped her and tried the cheesy pickup line was tall and built like a linebacker. His muscles bulged out of his too-small shirt and the glaze in his eyes told her he’d been in the bar a while.

“Just checking out how fresh they are.”

“Take a hike,” she said.

Before he could respond, there was a tap-tap on the microphone. They both turned to the stage where one of the staff stood. He cleared his throat. “Let me introduce you to tonight’s entertainment. He’s a born and bred Texan – Adahy Woods.”

A young man in his mid twenties walked on to the stage. He had short, dark hair and was wearing jeans and a T-shirt.

“He’s a damn Indian,” the linebacker said. “Didn’t think they’d let that sort in a place like this.”

Luckily his comments were drowned out by the applause. Disgusted, Piper grabbed her drink and moved away.

There were now two people seated at the reserved table and one of them was George. She wandered over, and George looked up and smiled. The other man didn’t notice her.

“Hi, George, mind if I join you?” Piper asked.

“Sure, we’ve got an extra seat.” George indicated one of the chairs and she put her drink on the table and pulled it out.

As she sat, the other man tore his attention away from the stage to look at her.

His gaze was intense. Chocolate brown eyes, glaring in annoyance at the interruption, chiseled features and loose, wavy, shoulder-length brown hair. Piper’s whole body flushed warmly, and there was a delicious shiver down her spine.

“Tai Woods, this is Piper Atkinson, she’s a friend and a reporter for the Houston Age.” George turned to Piper. “Taima is Adahy’s brother.”

The name sparked something in Piper’s memory. She’d just read it at work. “The chef of The Wooden Spoon.”

Tai looked surprised but nodded once before turning his attention back to his brother.

Piper’s editor had assigned her to do a set of profiles on people of Houston. Taima Woods was the one person on her list of interviewees she actually wanted to interview, but the reclusive chef famously didn’t talk to the media. This was a great opportunity to break the ice.

“He sounds great,” Piper said to George, and nodded toward Adahy.

“He does. We’re going to release a single next month.”

The waitress delivered Piper’s order of nachos to the table.

“Help yourself,” she invited the others.

Tai frowned at her. He was obviously there for the music and not the company.

Pity even his dirty look made Piper shiver. What was wrong with her? She’d dated plenty of men, but none had given her this kind of frisson, especially not a man who was completely uninterested in her.

Still, if she was going to be interviewing him, she didn’t want to get him off side. She shut up, ate her nachos and listened to Adahy sing.

He was amazing. His tone was warm and the way he mixed Native American drums and pipes with modern pop/rock music gave it an edge, a difference that was refreshing.

Piper found herself tapping her foot to the music and when he finished his set, she added her voice to the shouts of approval coming from the crowd.

George got to his feet. “I’ll be back in a minute.” He headed to meet Adahy.

The applause died down and was replaced by voices.

“Oh my God. He’s so hot. I can’t wait to hear more of his songs,” said a woman who was sitting at the table next to theirs.

“Sounds like he was a success,” Piper commented.

Tai grunted non-committedly.

“You must be proud of him,” she tried.

“Ada’s achievements are his own.” Tai scanned the crowd.

Wow. This guy really didn’t do small talk.

Interviewing him was going to be a whole lot of fun.

She wondered whether the paper had contacted him about the special feature yet. The woman she’d phoned this evening had been expecting the call. She guessed Tai wouldn’t be.

As she was about to broach the subject, he pushed back his chair and left, walking toward Adahy and George, who were standing next to the stage.

No. Social skills really weren’t his forte.

Tai said something to his brother, gave him a hug and then wove his way through the crowd and out of the bar.

Piper sat there, unsure whether to be amused or offended by the man’s lack of manners. She decided on amused and made a mental note to ask her editor, Geraldine, why Tai was on the interview list.

George brought Adahy over to the table and introduced them.

“That was a fantastic set,” Piper told him. “Let me know when you next play and I’ll tell our music reporter.”

“Great idea,” George told her and grinned. “I’m getting drinks, do you want one?”

“Yes, please.” She wasn’t in any rush to get home and tomorrow was miraculously free, with no interviews booked or events she had to attend.

Adahy took the seat next to her and sighed in satisfaction. “That was fun.”

Fun.

When had Piper last thought her work was fun? She couldn’t remember associating that descriptor with her job at all. Even the usual positive fallbacks interesting, fulfilling and educational couldn’t be used to describe the last few months in her new position. “You looked like you were enjoying yourself,” she said.

He nodded. “You work for a paper?”

“The Houston Age,” she told him. “I was hoping to talk to your brother about a series we’ve got coming up, but he left before I could.”

Adahy laughed. “Good luck with that. Tai’s not one for talk.”

“I noticed,” Piper said.

He laughed again.

George returned with the drinks and handed them out. “What brings you out tonight, Piper? No one to interrogate?”

“Not tonight. I felt like going out and Elle said you’d be here.” She’d tried all of her friends – Libby, Imogen and Elle – but none of them had been available. Elle had suggested Piper meet her fiancé, George, at the bar.

“We haven’t seen you much lately,” George said.

Piper felt a twinge of guilt. “I’m sorry I wasn’t there to help clean up after the break in at Elle’s café.” Elle’s ex had trashed the place in a fit of jealousy.

“We had plenty of hands,” George said. “Besides, the piece your reporter buddy did when Elle reopened the café got so many people interested that she’s constantly busy. She’s pretty happy.”

“I’m glad.” Piper had called in a favor and asked the social pages reporter to attend Elle’s bookshop café reopening. The guy had been so impressed by the set up he’d done more than a little paragraph – he had requested his editor make it the spotlight of the week.

George turned to Adahy to discuss the performance. Piper found it fascinating to listen to people talking about subjects she knew little about. Here it was all about the music – pitch and tone, notes and keys – as well as the performance itself.

Some of George’s suggestions were good and made Piper review the set in a whole other light. It wasn’t just about singing and playing: it was about entertainment. She’d like to interview George about his work, but she’d never be allowed to because the music reporter guarded her turf.

Still, she’d chat to George about it some day when they were both free.

Piper stifled a yawn and checked the time. If she wanted to do anything constructive tomorrow – and she had to do more research on those profiles – she should go to bed. She got to her feet, said goodbye and headed home.

On the way out she caught herself looking for Tai, wondering if he had indeed gone or was waiting for her to leave.

Annoyed he was on her mind when he’d not paid her the slightest bit of regard, she reminded herself it was a purely professional curiosity. She had to interview him.

She ignored the fact her body didn’t usually respond like that to people she interviewed.

It was nothing to worry about.

Review:

Tai was introduced in Under the Covers (George’s story) and I knew that I wanted to find out his story, but at the same time I was afraid that he’d be too militant about his tribe.  I shouldn’t have doubted Boston.  She does a great job of showing his dedication to his people and detailing their struggles.  You feel for everything they’ve been thru and can understand why they might be a little hesitant to trust outsiders.  And that commitment sets up the conflict, and resolution, well.

Piper is going thru a little personal life crisis – she had an idea of what she wanted to do with her life and unfortunately things aren’t going the way she expects.  Throw in a new romance and she could easily have been overwhelmed but I really like how she faces it all head on.  She’s a great match for strong, sensitive Tai.

I have really enjoyed Boston’s Texan Quartet (although I missed Book 2, not sure how :)) – every time she gives her readers fantastic, individual characters with realistic issues.  (As with the other stories, this can easily stand on its own – returning readers will enjoy seeing their favorite characters again, but new readers won’t have trouble keeping up.)

The Texan Quartet, Book Three

by Claire Boston

What if the one time you didn’t want love was when you truly needed it?

Forced to flee her abusive ex, alone with no support, Elle is determined to rebuild her life and protect her five-year-old son. Not one to take the easy road, she opens a bookshop café, but opening day almost ends in disaster. In the midst of this chaos, the last thing she needs is a man as charming as George Jones getting in her way.

George has always been a sucker for a damsel in distress, and Elle ticks all the boxes. But Elle’s not interested in being rescued by anyone, especially not him. She knows her taste in men can’t be trusted, but fighting George’s charisma is harder than she expected. And George, who is not one to ignore an itch, has found there’s something about Elle that’s got under his skin.

When Elle’s ex turns up to cause trouble, George must overcome his boyish flirtatiousness if he’s to convince Elle to trust herself and let him into her life. But can Elle put her past behind her before it overwhelms her present?

Perfect for fans of Nora Roberts, Liane Moriarty, Jojo Moyes and Jane Green.

I somehow missed Book Two in this series (surprised?) but I did get to read the first one, What Goes On Tour, and at the time I said I hoped there would be another because I wanted to see more of George.  And boy did Boston delivery.

George is great.  He’s amazingly understanding and cares a lot about people.  He’s a great fit as a band manager and some of the traits that work for that also work well in his personal relationships.  He’s good at paying attention, about helping out when needed, and he’s a fixer … the only problem is that Elle doesn’t want any help.  At all.  She’s just gotten out of an abusive relationship with a controlling man and having someone step in to direct her life immediately causes issues.  Good thing that George is a fast learner and patient.  He makes a few mistakes along the way, a lot of that because Elle is still skittish, but he figures things out and proves to be great hero material.

There isn’t a lot of suspense or danger, although Elle’s ex does make a few appearances, causing trouble – mainly we focus on the growth of Elle & George’s relationship.  They work their way thru the relationship minefield that her past (and his personality) have created and it’s done very well.  In real life I think that Elle might have needed a little more time, but the interactions between the two are believable.  It’s a journey of steps for them and readers will be happy to be there for every single one.

(If you haven’t read the rest of The Texan Quartet, you’ll be fine.  I was a little afraid that missing Book 2 would be an issue for me but Boston does a great job of keeping you in the loop – telling you who’s who and the important parts of their stories.  And now I’m so curious about Imogen’s story that I’m adding it to my TBR pile.  And I’ll definitely keep my eye out for Book 4.)

Book Review, Claire Boston, What Goes on Tour

cover42416-mediumWhat goes on tour, stays on tour … or does it?

Few people know that socially awkward Adrian Hart is actually rock god Kent Downer, and that’s the way Adrian likes it. His privacy is essential, especially now that he has guardianship of his orphaned, ten-year-old niece, Kate. But when the nanny quits in the middle of his tour Adrian finds himself in a bind.

Until Libby Myles walks into his life.

Libby has only ever wanted to become a full-time author and prove to her parents that she can make it on her own. On the surface, the temporary job as the nanny for Kent Downer’s niece looks perfect—the pay is fabulous, the hours are short and Kate is a big fan—it’s the rock star that’s the issue.

Arrogant and way too attractive for anyone’s good, Kent Downer has enough swagger to power a small city. But when he’s out of costume he’s different—shy and uncertain. For Libby it’s a far harder combination to resist. She needs to find a balance between work, writing and ignoring her attraction to the rock star, because if she falls for him, it could mean the end of her dream.

But when a horrible scandal is unleashed—putting young Kate in danger—there’s more heat between Libby and Adrian than just sexual attraction. Libby must figure out if Adrian ever cared for her, or if it was all just part of the show …

I found What Goes on Tour a lot of fun but I do think that maybe there was also a lot going on. There’s: a) Libby’s self-esteem issues and her issues with her parents, b) Adrian’s childhood trauma, c) Kent’s fame, d) Adrian’s long-time friendship with his manager George, e) Kate’s adjustment to her parents’ death, and f) Libby and Adrian’s relationship. That’s a lot to fit into one story – not all of them require a ton of attention so you could probably fit in quite a few of them without any issue but, to me, it’s a little harder with all of them together.

I did like all of the characters involved – Kate is wonderfully precocious, Libby is sweet and caring, and Adrian is dedicated and loving. All of them manage to start developing a wonderful relationship together, despite all of their troubles. It is heart-tugging and emotional and touching. I just really wish that I’d gotten a chance to get to know them all a little better.  (And I hope that there are more stories coming because I’d like to see more from George and Libby’s friend Piper.  Maybe that will help flesh out some of the relationships and issues introduced here.)

With What Goes on Tour Boston does a great job of giving readers a sweet story, with lovely characters and one of my favorite endings.
