Cinderella Screwed Me Over, Cindi Madsen

Today I have the pleasure of having author Cindi Madsen stop by for a guest post and a look at her new book, Cinderella Screwed Me Over.  I’ve read a couple of Cindi’s books (Falling For Her Fiancé and Act Like You Love Me) and thoroughly enjoyed them so I’m really looking forward to this one. Check it all out below.

*****

Why I write romance

I’ve never considered myself a romantic type of person. (You can ask my husband, I’m really not.) But there’s something about watching two people fall in love, whether it’s onscreen, or in the pages of a novel, that I find incredibly addictive. I love the butterflies, and seeing the characters’ change what they want because what they want is the other person. Plus, there’s kissing! Nothing’s better than a perfect first kiss. Of course awkward ones can be pretty funny, too. When it comes to romance, there are a few authors who’ve inspired me.

Charlotte Bronte. Because Jane Eyre! I’ve probably mentioned this novel many times in guest posts. It’s one of my all-time favorite love stories. Two people with rough pasts, who get each other and find love, even though neither one of them is perfect? I love that kind of story! And this one’s such a beautiful one.

Sophie Kinsella is another one of my favorite authors. Funny plus swoony is a read I can always get down with. Those kinds of books are my go-to comfort reads.

Elizabeth George Speare wrote the novel that I’ve read the most times in my life. In high school, I mostly read serial killer novels because I wanted to solve the mystery. But when my mom gave me the Witch of Blackbird Pond, there was something about it that pulled me in. It made me want to learn more about the Salem Witch Trials, and I also wanted a sailor like Nat to come to my town. I’m still a little disappointed he didn’t. Lol.

Another series I’ve mentioned several times is Anne of Green Gables. I actually read this back in elementary school, and there was always something about Gilbert Blythe. Every few years I like to re-watch the movies and remember that first time Gil called Anne carrots.

There’ve been a lot of other great romance writers who’ve influenced me, from classic, to contemporary, to YA. I have fabulous writer friends who always inspire me, and I get to critique writers who aren’t even published, but make me feel the love every time I read them. Basically, give me great characters who fall in love, and I’ll fall in love right along with them. As I’m writing, that’s what I’m hoping to do with my characters, so that when my readers close the book, they’re smiling and sighing and feeling the tingly happiness of love. Because everyone could use a little more happily ever after in their life.

Cinderella Screwed Me Over

by Cindi Madsen

Finding the one has never been so fun frustrating.

Cinderella Screwed Me Over-500Blurb:

Darby Quinn has a bone to pick with Cinderella. Burned one too many times by ex-boyfriends, Darby has lost all belief in the happily-ever-after that the fairy-tale princess promised her. She’s sworn off love, Prince Charmings, and happy endings and she’s happy about it. Really. Or at least she was…until she met Jake, her gorgeous neighbor and the manager of her favorite restaurant. But Darby has rules about dating, ones she’s culled from her years spent with so-called “princes,” and starting something with Jake would break all of them.

Charming, fun, and unwilling to give up on her, Jake doesn’t fit any of the profiles Darby has created from her case studies of ex-princes-gone-bad. Finally presented with her own Prince Charming, can Darby take a chance on a happily-ever-after?

Full of wit and sarcastic humor, Cinderella Screwed Me Over proves that sometimes the perfect love, like a perfect pair of shoes, is just within your grasp.

*****

Excerpt:

I stepped off the treadmill, thinking about all I had to do that day. And came face-to-face with Jake.

“I thought that was you,” he said.

I tugged the earphones out of my ears and blinked, hardly able to believe my eyes. He was wearing long mesh shorts and a T-shirt that stretched tight across his well-defined chest.

Last night after my date, when I’d had trouble falling asleep, I’d thought of all the things I should say to him the next time we ran into each other. But they’d abandoned me somewhere around the time I’d checked out his pecs.

“W-what are you doing here?” Smooth, Darby. Real smooth.

“Same thing as you,” he said. “Going for a run.”

I really wished I wasn’t so sweaty. My face was probably all red, too. “But… You don’t live here? In this building?”

One corner of Jake’s mouth twisted up. “It would be kind of strange for me to go running here if I didn’t live here.”

Heat filled my cheeks and I took another swig from my water bottle. Time for the apology. Then maybe I could stop feeling so guilty and get this guy off my mind. “Look, I’m sorry about the misunderstanding at the restaurant. I just thought you were one of those guys who tells everyone he owns the restaurant or runs the company or whatever to seem impressive. I thought that since I knew everyone, you were lying to try to impress me.”

There. I’d apologized. Now I could move past this guy and get back to my normal life.

“I was trying to impress you, but not with my job.” He tucked his thumbs into the

pockets of his shorts and shrugged. “I guess I need to work on my skills, because obviously my natural rugged charm wasn’t enough.” He flashed me a smile to punctuate his statement and I tried—and failed—not to let it melt me the tiniest bit.

“Oh, you were plenty charming. Just not enough to make up for being a liar. Which for all I know, you’re not, so again, sorry.”

“Do you always assume the worst in people?”

I crossed my arms. “Yes. That way I’m never disappointed. It saves a lot of time and trouble.”

His eyebrows shot up and his smile faded. It only lasted a moment, then the smile returned. “I guess there’s only one thing to do about that. Let’s go to dinner, and I’ll prove to you I’m not a liar.”

Is he seriously asking me out right now, while I’m all sweaty and makeup free? My gaze accidentally drifted to his toned chest and arms. My pulse quickened and the temperature in the room climbed even higher. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t tempted.

I swallowed, forcing from my mind thoughts of how good he’d look shirtless, and reminding myself of the rules that had kept me heartbreak-free for a year. Guys like Nick, they were safe. The guy standing in front of me was the total opposite. “Sorry, but you’ve got two strikes against you already. You work at my favorite restaurant, and you live in my building. That’s just asking for trouble.”

Jake took a step closer. “Or maybe it’ll be convenient.”

“A girl does like to be called convenient.” My voice shook a little, thanks to his proximity. He was tall, too—in my sneakers, I barely came to his shoulder, which meant he’d still have a few inches on me in my highest heels. Forcing as much indifference into my expression as I could manage, I glanced at my watch. “I’ve got to go get some work done.”

Jake reached out and put his hand on my hip, just like he’d done the other night. My skin heated under his touch and my breath caught in my throat. Part of me was screaming, Just go for it, and the other part was yelling, Mayday, mayday, we’re going down!

“Just so you know,” he said, leaning close enough his chest bumped my arm, “I’m an expert on baseball, and two strikes isn’t enough to get out. You need three.”

I stared up into those startling blue eyes of his, and worked at keeping my voice steady. “I’m sure the third will come up soon.”

The wattage on his smile kicked up a couple extra notches. “I’ll see you around, Darby.”

Act Like You Love Me, Book Review, Cindi Madsen

Act Like You Love Me-500Brynn McAdams marched to her own drummer in high school – an awkward, geeky drummer – but now she’s all grown up and nothing like that girl.  At least she believes so most of the time.  Then her crush, still handsome and out of her league, comes back to town to help direct her community play and get his family’s lake house in shape to sell . . . and doesn’t recognize her.  Now she can use her acting ability to pretend to be someone else, a confident girl who Sawyer would be attracted to.  Sawyer’s last girlfriend was an actress and things ended so badly he never wants anything to do with one again.  Too bad he can’t ignore his attraction to Brynn.  She’s sweet, funny and most importantly honest, nothing like his ex.  The closer they get, the guiltier Brynn feels, but can she come clean about who she really is without losing Sawyer forever?

I’m not a big fan of deception romances – where someone is lying to or misleading the other – but I can kinda understand why Brynn did it.  They aren’t that far out of high school and those teenage years can leave some deep scars.  I get that she didn’t expect the relationship to progress as far as it did and that she quickly was past the point where telling the truth made sense.  She’s an appealing characters, foibles and all, with a little Lucy Ricardo in her so that things quickly spiral away from her.   Plus Sawyer states that he has no intention of staying.  Mix that in with her believing that he couldn’t really like her anyway and her reasoning becomes a little more believable.

Sawyer has his own problems stemming from watching his dad succumb to Lou Gehrig’s disease while he was in high school.  Seeing his mom have to take care of his dad while he faded away left scars, especially with Sawyer’s fear that it could happen to him too and that his wife would have to do the same thing.  Throw in a bad relationship and it’s a given that he’ll be a little romance shy.  And really, who could blame him for being upset once he finds out that Brynn lied to him.  It’s a romance so of course it works out, but it would be totally understandable to have him walk away.

Dani from Falling for Her Fiance plays a supporting role as Brynn’s friend and it’s fun to get an update on her and Wes.  But if you haven’t read it, don’t worry.  Dani does a great job of filling in any of the relevant details that might apply to this story.

In Act Like You Love Me,  Cindi Madsen gives us a fast-paced and interesting read, one that pulls you in right away and makes you impatient for Brynn’s runaway car to crash.  I mean that in a good way – you know things are going to get messy but you care enough to see it to the end.

Act Like You Love Me, Cindi Madsen

Another wonderful blog tour starts tomorrow, featuring Cindi Madsen’s newest Act Like You Love Me.  (And be sure to come back on the 19th for my review.)

All’s fair in acting and amore…

Brynn McAdams isn’t the awkward drama geek she was in high school—she’s grown up and confident, or at least she likes to think so. But when her old crush, the impossibly handsome and impossibly unattainable Sawyer Raines, comes back to town to direct her community play, Brynn finds herself determined to be someone other than the girl he doesn’t even recognize. Good thing she’s an excellent actress.

After his bad breakup in NYC, the last thing Sawyer wants is to get involved with another actress. But the glamorous and beautiful Brynn draws him in, even though as her director, he knows she’s off-limits. There’s just something about the woman that feels…familiar. Like home.

As Brynn’s lies start to snowball, she struggles to stop acting and come clean. But what if Sawyer is already falling for the fake Brynn, not the Brynn she truly is?

As a bonus, Cindi is giving away a $25 Amazon gift card, a cute fish figurine, 2 e-copies of Falling for her Fiance, 2 e-copies of All the Broken Pieces and 1 e-copy of Act Like You Love Me.  The fish figurine and gift card giveaway is US only but e-book giveaways are international.  You can enter here

Check out this new book coming soon!

Act Like You Love Me cover

ACT LIKE YOU LOVE ME excerpt:

“Cut, cut cut!” Sawyer stood. “Was that supposed to be more passionate? Because it sucked.”

“This is supposed to be the eighteen hundreds,” Brynn said. “It can’t be too passionate or it would seem inappropriate for the time.”

The next instant Sawyer was charging up the steps to the stage. “I’m not saying it’s got to be a kiss with tongue, I’m saying you’ve got to look at each other like you’re in love so the audience will want it to work out. Our modern audience.”  Sawyer shook his head. “Take it again, from before the proposal.”

It was impossible to concentrate with Sawyer standing right there, so close she could hear every shift of his body and feel his gaze on her like a weight. All her lines were swimming together.

Leo knelt, told her she was an angel. She said her line, trying to peer into his soul like she wanted to be with him, and then Leo kissed her. And it was sloppier than usual.

She did her best to not jerk back, though it was her first instinct.

“Okay, that was just…” Sawyer moved in front of her. He looked at the playbook, then lowered it by his side and stared into her eyes. The air thickened around them and she could feel every thump of her heart. “What a perfect angel you are, Cecily.” He said it so tenderly, his smile close-lipped but full of joy.

“You dear romantic boy,” she said, all out of instinct because thoughts were getting fuzzy.

He leaned in and kissed her, a soft kiss with his lips barely parted. The pressure of his lips increased for a delicious moment, and then they were gone. A quick, simple kiss, but when his mouth left hers, she felt its absence so strongly that she couldn’t think about anything else for a couple seconds. Her breath was stuck somewhere in her lungs and her lips still tingled, living the sensation over and over again. Heat wound through her body, her hands itched to reach out and touch him. And then she remembered she was supposed to. She ran her fingers through his hair and felt the whisper of his breath on her wrist as he exhaled.

“Wow, that was good,” Wendy said from the front, breaking Brynn from her trance.

Brynn stepped back and swallowed, but her throat wasn’t working right. Sawyer’s eyes never left hers, and one corner of his mouth curved up in a smug, self-satisfied way.

“It was all right, I suppose,” Brynn said, working to keep her voice steady. She crossed her arms and shrugged. “For a first-timer, anyway.”

That only made Sawyer’s smile grow wider.

Brynn couldn’t help but watch Sawyer as he jumped off the stage. Funny how she’d dreamed of kissing him all the time in high school, but her fantasy wasn’t even close to the real thing. Her heart felt like it’d just been wrung out and shoved back in her

And her scene with Leo was better. She was sure it had nothing to do with the fact that she closed her eyes and pretended it was Sawyer kissing her again.

Nope. Nothing at all.

Book Review, Cindi Madsen, Falling for Her Fiance

cover26704-medium

Faced with going to her family-oriented company retreat solo, Dani makes a bold decision and asks her best friend Wes to go as her pretend fiance.  She’s up for a promotion and she wants to make a good impression but it seems that only couples get time with the boss at these events.  Wes agrees but only if she will do the same at his sister’s wedding.  He wants to show his family and his ex, who will be a bridesmaid in the wedding, that he’s really over her.  Best friends since they met in college, there hasn’t ever been anything romantic between Dani and Wes … but pretending to be engaged brings out feelings neither of them anticipated.  Will their pretense turn real or will this ruin their friendship forever?

Dani and Wes mean everything to each other.  They turn to the other first in good times and bad.  They share a sense of humor and understand each other.  They have private jokes and can complete each other’s sentences.  It isn’t a surprise that everyone thinks there is more to their relationship than friendship.  Especially their significant others – their friendship is a major trouble point in their romantic relationships and has led to more than one breakup – but they have never been more than friends.  They tried it once in college and it didn’t work.  It even ruined their friendship for a while and they don’t want to chance that again.  But the more time they spend together the harder it is to not want more.  Both characters are fun and it is easy to imagine what a fantastic friendship they have, and why they might not want to risk it.  It’s a believable and understandable problem, one that many of us have probably faced.

In Falling for Her Fiance, Madsen does a fantastic job of bringing readers appealing characters with a realistic issue.  She gives us two people with the challenge of risking a relationship that is extremely important to them on the chance that it could be so much more.
