Book Review, Cedar Ridge series, Jill Shalvis, Nobody But You

I am so beyond thrilled to have Jill Shalvis stop by today to answer a couple of real quick questions (she is a busy lady 🙂 ) and share the newest in the Cedar Ridge series, Nobody But You.

We’ve seen the others in this series before (Second Chance Summer & My Kind of Wonderful) and once again Shalvis delivers a total knockout!

*****

In the book Jacob’s mom, Carrie, is sick. What was it like writing a character that had dementia?

Having family experience with this, I just wanted to show that not every minute of it is torturous.

Describe what readers can expect from a Jill Shalvis romance in 140 characters.

Hot guys, fun, sexy, humor, hot guys, love, girl power and as it can’t be said enough, more hot guys. 🙂

Finish this sentence: My heroine will never…

Go quietly into the night… 🙂

Cedar Ridge series

by Jill Shalvis

Blurb:

When Jacob was injured in the war, it changed him for life. Now all he wants to do is come home to Cedar Ridge, settle in at his lakeside cabin and get some much-needed peace and quiet. But there’s no peace to be had when he finds a spitfire of a woman camping out on his property. Half the time he’s not sure whether he wants to spank her or kiss–or maybe both. He’s in a dark place and a dark mood, and here’s this wildly hot woman who is also funny and light and may be the balm be needs to soothe his aching soul.

Sophie Marren is pretty much penniless after leaving her abusive husband. She doesn’t have the money to pay rent or the slip fees for docking the boat where she’s been sleeping. She was getting along just perfectly until the good-looking, brooding, I’m-too-sexy-for-myself guy moves into the lake cabin that the slip belongs to. Sure he’s hot as the noon sun with those dark lens and even darker ‘tude, but god forbid she tie herself to another man who’s always telling her what to do. But the more she gets to know Jacob, the more she sees how willing he is to battle for her wounded heart…a battle she might just let him win.

Excerpt:

She eyed the bench a long beat but did eventually sit, perching primly as far from him as she could get and yet still be close enough to grab the bottle.

Smart woman.

She took the Scotch and drank. Her eyes watered and she coughed as she handed it to him. With a sigh, she leaned back to study the night sky. Her bared throat was slim and creamy smooth. An unexpected temptation. Remembering the flash of pain and vulnerability she’d unwittingly revealed, and that for whatever reason he’d somehow added to it, he spoke. “I’m sorry.”

She glanced at him as if she’d never heard a man apologize before in her life. “For…breathing?” she asked. “Having a penis? What?”

“You were upset because you didn’t know I was a Kincaid.”

She sighed. “That was just me looking for a reason to be mad at you so I wouldn’t…”

She bit her lower lip, clearly not wanting to go on.

But now he had to know. “So you wouldn’t what?”

“Nothing,” she said. “It’s just that I’m trying to make better choices.”

“Of which I wouldn’t be one.”

“It’s not necessarily your fault,” she said. “It’s that you’re a man.”

“Guilty as charged.”

“And I’m off men right now.”

“And on…women?” he asked with admittedly more than a little fascination.

She rolled her eyes. “I’m on no one, but thank you for proving my point on men.”

“I get that,” he said. “But being off men doesn’t seem to be making you very happy, or sound like a whole lot of fun.”

“Maybe I don’t need fun.”

He understood that. He’d felt the same way since Brett died. “What do you need?” he asked, honestly wanting to know more about her.

Instead of answering, she reached for the bottle. He waited until she met his gaze before letting go.

“Nothing,” she said a little too quickly. “Everything’s…perfect.”

“And your glass is half full,” he said. “So you’ve said.”

But he didn’t believe her. “How about a game?”

“I don’t play games.”

Now, that wasn’t exactly true. Whether she knew it or not, she’d been playing with  his head since he’d first laid eyes on her. “Three truths and a lie,” he said.

She stared at him. “As in you tell me three truths and a lie, and I pick out the lie?”

“Yes.”

She considered this. “What do I get if I win?”

“What do you want?”

For the briefest of beats, her gaze dropped to his mouth.

Oh, hell yeah, he thought. Want me…

“My first boyfriend taught me that game,” she said.

“What did the winner get?”

“A kiss.”

Definitely still playing with his head… “Is that what you want, Sophie? A kiss?”

Again she stared at his mouth before dropping eye contact and wrapping that eye-stopping pink robe tighter around her body. “Do you?” she asked.

“Hell yes.”

Her gaze flew to his.

“Problem is,” he said conversationally, “if I kissed you, I don’t think I’d be able to stop.”

Her mouth literally fell open. The pulse at the base of her throat jumped. And she seemed to lose her words.

He went on. “But you should know, I don’t lose. That means you’ll have to tell me three truths and a lie.” And he’d hopefully get to know more about her.

She closed her mouth to bite her lower lip in what could’ve been indecision or excitement. Obviously he was hoping for the latter. “But hey, if you’re not sure you can handle losing, we can just forget about it,” he said.

The challenge lifted her chin and put sparks in her eyes. That’s it, babe. Show me what you’ve got.

“Bring it,” she said.

Review:

I love Sophie but I still get a little tired of his flip-flopping emotions – luckily Jacob has a lot more patience with her than I do 🙂  Other than that though she’s great.  I understand where she’s coming from, with her ex and her family, and it makes her issues believable.  I love how saucy she is and how she’s willing to give Jacob heck but still be there for him when he needs it.

I’ve been anxious to get to Jacob’s story, mainly because he’s the unknown Kincaid (although Kenna gives him a run for his money there 🙂 ).  Shalvis does a good job of showing his conflicting emotions over his choices and how the past decade without his family, plus everything that he’s seen and done, has impacted him.  I love watching him work his way back to a happy place with the rest of the siblings.  And I adore his & Hud’s relationship with their mom.  It’s both sweet and fun and I love them all together.

Once again Shalvis delivers a winner and I can’t wait to see where she goes next!

A Cedar Ridge Novel

by Jill Shalvis

UNEXPECTED AND UNDENIABLE . . .

Bailey Moore has an agenda: skiing in the Rockies, exploring castles in Europe, ballroom dancing in Argentina. Now that she has a second lease on life, she’s determined not to miss a thing. What she doesn’t realize is that item #1 comes with a six-foot-one ski god hot enough to melt a polar ice cap. She doesn’t want to miss out on him either, but Hudson Kincaid isn’t the type of guy to love and let go. And as gorgeous as Cedar Ridge is, she’s not planning to stick around.

As head of ski patrol at his family’s resort, Hud thinks he’s seen it all. But never has he run into someone like Bailey. She might look delicate, but her attitude is all firecracker. And her infectious joy touches something deep within him that he’s been missing far too long. Now he’ll just have to convince Bailey to take a chance on her biggest adventure yet . . . something rare and all kinds of wonderful.

I really got caught up in the Kincaids when I read Second Chance Summer and I remember not caring which of the siblings was next because I knew I was going to read their story whoever it was.  But I do have to say that I am SO tickled that it is Hud.  He is such a rascal that having him meet his match is extra fun.

And this story is fantastic!  It is one of those slow burns as we get to know both of them while at the same time they are getting know each other.  As to be expected, they have hang-ups (understandable & realistic ones) that they have to work their way through.

Hud is a great hero – smart, caring, and has taken on so much responsibility.  Unfortunately that also he’s not very good at letting things go and he carries around a lot with him.  His dedication to his mother is absolutely amazing but the guilt over the way his brother left is dragging him down.  And while he doesn’t have time for much more in his life, between his jobs and family, Bailey definitely gets his attention!

I think she is one of my favorite heroines ever and  I so wish I could be more like her (of course without going thru what she did to get there).  She’s got an amazing love of life, tempered with an interesting, straight-forward wisdom.  I think that the HEA moment for her and Hud will go on my list as one of the best I’ve read for a very long time.

On a little of a down side I didn’t feel like the siblings were involved as much as in the previous story.  I think because Bailey has got such a compelling story that maybe there isn’t much room.  Or maybe it was so much like coming home again, after getting to know them so much before, that it was one of those moments where you slipped right in like you never left.  They are just as rowdy & in each other’s business, which I loved so much about them.

If you’ve never read a Shalvis book, this is a FANTASTIC series to start with.  All of the quirky Kincaids and their SOs are delightful – full of mischief and love for one another.  They play hard, work hard, love hard and live hard.  They don’t have things easy but they have each other and I can’t wait to see what Shalvis dreams up for them.

(The next book is about Hud’s twin, Jacob, and since he’s been MIA for years, I’m very interested to find out exactly who he is and what his deal is going to be.)

A Cedar Ridge Novel

by Jill Shalvis

Cedar Ridge, Colorado, is famous for crisp mountain air, clear blue skies, and pine-scented breezes. And it’s the last place Lily Danville wants to be. But she needs a job, and there’s an opening at the hottest resort in her hometown. What has her concerned is the other hot property in Cedar Ridge: Aidan Kincaid-firefighter, rescue worker, and heartbreaker. She never could resist that devastating smile . . .

The Kincaid brothers are as rough and rugged as the Rocky Mountains they call home. Aidan has always done things his own way, by his own rules. And never has he regretted anything more than letting Lily walk out of his life ten years ago. If anyone has ever been in need of rescuing, she has. What she needs more than anything are long hikes, slow dances, and sizzling kisses. But that can only happen if he can get her to give Cedar Ridge-and this bad boy-a second chance . . .

I have been a fan of Jill Shalvis’s work for a very long time.  I have always loved how she does such a fantastic job of delivering not just a love story between two people, but also brings to her readers well-developed and intricate family dynamics.  There’s always more going on and by the time you close the book you feel like you are part of the clan.

The Kincaids may be a little dysfunctional, considering how they came to be, but they truly care about each other and it is there for anyone to see.  They are protective, but they aren’t afraid to give a good ribbing when it is needed … and they are always there in a heartbeat when another is in trouble.  It’s a fabulous bond and one that extends to their sibling’s loved ones as well.  Once you are part of the group, you become a Kincaid with all the highs and lows that brings.

Lily hasn’t had that kind of relationship in a very long time and she’s running scared of Aiden and all the complications that he brings.  But the Kincaids are just as stubborn as they are loyal and he’s not going down without a fight.  While he can understand her fear, he’s willing to take it on and show her that he’s worth the risk.

It’s an emotional battle for both of them, but such an enjoyable one.  And I can’t wait for the next Kincaid to meet his or her match.  It’s going to be a heck of a ride 🙂

I have received ARCs of books free from NetGalley (and many moons ago from BookTrib.com) to review but the majority of the stories are either bought by me or provided for free from the publisher, author, or PR company. The opinions I share are my own and in no way are influenced by an author or publisher. There is no promise of a positive review by any party and there is no additional compensation. Unless otherwise noted, I am not affiliated with any contest or other event mentioned on this blog and I do not receive a paid endorsement for any post.
