Book Review, Cathryn Fox, His Reason to Stay, In the Line of Duty series

We’ve seen the In the Line of Duty series before with His Best Friend’s Girl, His Moment to Steal, His Taste of Temptation, and His Trouble in Tallulah.  This is definitely one of those series where I pick up a new book without caring what its about because I know I will love it!

In The Line of Duty Series, Book 6

by Cathryn Fox

Genre: Contemporary Military Romance

Blurb:

They made one beautiful mistake. The consequences could haunt them for life.

From the moment the Nelson brothers took a lonely young girl from the wrong side of the tracks under their wing, Rachel Andrews loved them both with all her heart. But it was James who won her hand.

Now widowed, she’s trying to pick up the pieces for her daughter’s sake as well as her own, but once again loneliness is her closest friend—until James’s brother comes back to town. The man she secretly wishes had asked her first.

Army ammunitions expert Kyle Nelson would rather face live fire than face the raw reminder that the woman he loved chose his brother over him, but he’s tired of running. And ready to step up to be the man everyone needs him to be—especially the young niece he’s never met.

As time runs short before Kyle ships out again, the desire Kyle and Rachel have suppressed breaks free in a fiery rush. Tempting her to reveal a secret that could give him a reason to stay—or burn their love to ash.

Warning: Contains a hot military man who will steal your panties as well as your heart.

Review:

I can’t say enough about this series.  The characters are always interesting, the bedroom door is wide open & HOT, and the plot is well paced & interesting.  Fox’s men are all strong, stand up guys – with good hearts, hard bodies and strong minds.  They are smart, sexy and dedicated to each other, their loved ones and what they feel is right.

And of course Kyle isn’t any different.  He’s sacrificed a lot for his brother, including the woman he loved.  Now that his brother is gone, it’s become harder to resist her.  Or her daughter.

Rachel is hiding a big secret from Kyle (although I’m pleased that Fox made it a recent secret, because I don’t[ know that I would have liked her as much if it had been known all along).  She’s always had feelings for him and now that he’s back in her life, she’s afraid that it might send him running.

I loved seeing the two of them get close again after so many years apart.  The have long-held feelings that need to be brought out into the open but both are afraid of what it could mean – Rachel thinks it could be too much for him and he’s carrying guilt over his brother.  It’s all so complicated but addressed very nicely and without being overly emotional.

My only issue, and I’ve said this before, is that I’m a little icked out by the idea of brothers being with the same girl.  I’m an only child so I don’t know if having siblings would change anything but to me it’s just … well, weird to think about.  I mean there’s just something about both of you having been naked with the same woman that just asks for comparison and … ugh, I don’t know it’s just strange to me.  But that’s a personal issue and I think Fox handles it very well.  I just kinda blocked that part out and enjoyed the rest of it since I know it is just a hangup of mine and not necessarily a problem for everyone 🙂

Fantastic heroes, strong women who love them, and romantic complications without a whole lot of drama add up to fantastic books that I just have a hard time putting down.

In the Line of Duty, Book 5

by Cathryn Fox

With a little help—and a little kink—from her friend, she might just get her man.

Skylar Redmond’s Sky Bar is regularly wall-to-wall hot soldiers. Yet she is alone—and getting tired of it. Forget about finding a man who’ll rock her world in the bedroom. She’ll settle for a guy who’s stable, kind and compassionate. Too bad that guy still sees her as the pigtailed girl from their youth, not the strong woman she is today. But maybe, with a little help, that’ll change.

As an ex-military field ambulance technician, Matt James excels at performing under pressure. Pretending to be interested in Skylar to help her capture the attention of his best friend? Piece of cake—because he won’t be faking it. He’s been in love with her since their school yard days, but never pushed it. She deserves someone who can offer her more.

A touch leads to a kiss, and a kiss to a night that throws a kink—or three—into Sky’s plan. Leaving her wondering if she’s going for the wrong man…and letting the right one slip through her fingers.

Warning: This book contains a girl with her eyes on the wrong prize, and a half-cocked plan—but definitely not a half-cocked hero.

This series is one of my absolute favorites.  As soon as I see that there is a new book I pick it up without even looking at the blurb – don’t care, I know it will be good 🙂  And Fox doesn’t let me down with her latest.

Matt has to be one of my favorite heroes.  He’s smart, caring, sensitive, hard-working, a good friend … and has been silently in love with one of his best friends forever.  Unfortunately he also has a little inferiority complex – thinks that he’s not good enough for her until he becomes a doctor – so he’s willing to help her catch the attention of their other best friend instead.  Even if it breaks his heart.

I like Sky as well.  Too often with this kind of book, she would have been so oblivious to Matt and his appeal that it would be painful – concentrating instead on the one she thinks she wants.  Here though it’s a more fluid process as she starts to see her old friend as more, but of course miscommunication and assumptions make for complications.  She has some help from her friends but it is very hard to take that step to something more with Matt and potentially ruin a friendship that means so much to both of them.

There is always a warning with the In the Line of Duty series because they are fabulously spicy.  Matt has a little kink to him which adds a little steam to a beautifully romantic and touching story – nothing to be too concerned about as long, though,  as you like your romances hot 🙂

Book Review, Cathryn Fox, His Moment to Steal, In the Line of Duty series

cover60503-mediumOnce a thief, always a thief…and he’s just walked away with her heart.

In the Line of Duty, Book 4

Ex-military security specialist Luke Phillips would like nothing more than to walk away from his latest job, especially when he realizes the upscale market owner is the daughter of the man responsible for his year spent in juvie.

Except he promised the kids at the community center new and updated equipment. He has no choice but to keep to himself and try not to get mixed up with Emery Vincent. No matter how sweet and sexy she is.

One look at Luke starts Emery’s heart fluttering—along with other specific body parts. But she knows better than to act on those urges with a bad boy who looks at her like he’s been living off rations and she’s the market’s hot lunch special.

But when he rescues her and bandages up her scuffed knee, the heat between them explodes. While a future between them is impossible, hot, sweaty sex is guaranteed—at least until the job is done. Unless Luke can let go of the past and risk it all for love.

Warning: This book contains a smoking-hot ex-convict from the wrong side of thetracks, and a silver-spoon lady who gets oh, so much more than she bargained for when shehires him for a job.

I love these “In the Line of Duty” books.  The guys are all Alpha and the women are spunky – my favorite kind of combination – and His Moment to Steal fits right in.  Make sure you check out His Trouble in Tallulah and His Taste of Temptation.

If you take on the latest in the series, be prepared for some steam because the story is rough and coarse and sexy as hell, just like its hero.  Luke is off-the-charts sexy but he’s carrying around a lot of baggage.  Spending time with Emery, daughter of an old enemy, though, quickly has him reconsidering some of his views.  He’s as stubborn as he is hot so it is hard for him to let go completely and learn to trust, which isn’t going to lead to an easy HEA.

Emery’s been let down enough times not to expect much from people.  While it seems like what they have is a no-strings affair, emotions get involved pretty quickly (of course).  And as much as she wants to give her heart and trust to Luke, it isn’t easy for her.  His hesitancy to let her all the way in doesn’t help things much so you know there is going to be trouble in paradise.  The ending though had me all smiles and squishy feelings though, just the way I like it.

With smooth writing, delectable characters and sizzle between the sheets, Fox delivers another winner!

HisTasteOfTemptation-R[9]His Taste of Temptation

In the Line of Duty, Book 3

by Cathryn Fox

Blurb:

One affair, thirty days.

Since his last relationship blew up in his face, bomb expert Brad Crosby has lost his appetite for “permanent”. But his kid brother’s best friend? Now there’s a curvy morsel he could wrap his lips around.

For years Brad has been the star of Madison Graham’s fantasies. If only she were the kind of put-together girl he prefers, not a pastry chef whose makeup consists of a dusting of powdered sugar on her nose. A belief that’s confirmed when her apartment floods and he offers to let her sleep in his bed—alone.

Wrapped in Brad’s sheets, she dreams of his touches, his kisses, the feel of his body on hers. Except her dreams feel like reality—and come morning, she realizes it wasn’t a dream at all.

Soon the two are burning up the nights. But as Madison’s sweet love grows on him, Brad can’t help but think of extending their time together.

Too bad Madison keeps reminding him their affair has an expiration date.

Warning: May contain heat, explosive sex, and Fourth of July fireworks that pale in comparison to the sparks between a sworn bachelor and a tempting pastry chef.

Review:

This is the second of Fox’s “In the Line of Duty” books that I’ve read and I’m hooked.  At one point I looked up and realized that I was about halfway thru this one and felt like no time had passed at all.  And just like His Trouble in Tallulah, His Taste of Temptation is sexy, sweet and fun.   And the great thing, like Trouble, you can start here if you haven’t read any of the other stories – they do a great job of standing on their own.  But if these two are any indication you won’t stop at just one!

I think it is hard to get the right note when you are dealing with self-esteem issues in your main characters.  But Fox does a good job of realistically portraying a woman with body issues without having her be too down on herself or … well, whiny. And Brad is a fantastic hero – he’s kind, caring and supportive of his friends and family.  He’s understandably hesitant to get in to a relationship again – no only because of his own past but from seeing other relationship that have faltered.

Best of all, at no time did I go “ugh” at anything they did, said or thought.  Even though they both are making assumptions about the other person’s feelings and they aren’t doing a great job of communicating, it is believable in the context that Fox gives us.  You can totally see where they are coming from, not only at the beginning but as the book progresses and their feelings deepen.

I will say that my only complaint is that it ended somewhat abruptly (although totally satisfyingly) but since this is a series (and Brad’s brother Jonah is still single, as well as some of their friends), I’m sure we’ll be seeing more of them in coming stories.

With some seriously hot naked time and some seriously sweet together time, His Taste of Temptation will charm readers as they join Brad and Madison on a path to their own, somewhat unexpected, HEA.

*****

Excerpt:

Jesus Christ, Madison was going to be the death of him.

He’d been hoping to avoid her when he showed up to collect his brother, and the last thing he expected was to find her in a goddamn wet T-shirt, looking so fucking hot he almost shot off a load then and there.

Brad drummed his fingers on his steering wheel and shifted in his seat, uncomfortable as his cock pressed insistently against his unforgiving jeans. Christ, seeing her in that T-shirt, blinking up at him with those dark bedroom eyes of hers as the lush swell of her body beckoned his touch—his cock—had damn near done him in.

Fuck.

He’d be lying if he said he didn’t want her in his bed. Every time he looked at her all he could think about was caging her beneath him and fucking her long and hard, driving balls deep until she screamed out his name. Oh yeah, he’d make her scream, and when he did—contrary to what Sophie thought—everyone would hear it.

Maybe then he’d be able to stop thinking about her when he was alone at night. Hell, who was he kidding? He thought about her even when he wasn’t alone.

He’d always liked his kid brother’s best friend, but six months ago, after returning home from a long overseas tour, he suddenly began to see the sweet girl next door in different ways.

Sinful ways…

But he wasn’t going to act on his urges, not when she had something going on with Jonah. Shit…

Truthfully, Brad wasn’t sure what kind of relationship the two had, considering he’d seen them both date other people over the years. But from the comfort level between them, to the way they took care of each other, even going so far as to sharing a place when Jonah had finished his last tour, he knew there had to be deeper feelings involved, and he wasn’t about to take her to his bed, no matter how much he wanted her naked and beneath him. Or naked and on top.

Or just plain naked.

Jonah tossed his rucksack into the truck bed and slid into the cab, pulling Brad’s thoughts back from fantasyland. “Hey, bro, what’s up?”

Brad put his key into the ignition and turned the engine over. “Nothing.” He clenched his jaw hard as he watched Madison and Sophie exit from the downstairs bakery. A frown marred Madison’s pretty face as she spoke to her friend, the Sweetie’s Bakery Closed sign on the door behind her rattling against the glass pane as she locked up. Brad gripped the steering wheel harder. He hated seeing her living and working in such a shitty place, and he knew today’s loss of income was going to have a serious effect on her bank account.

“You have that look on your face again.”

Brad angled his head toward his brother. “What look is that?”

Jonah grinned. “The one you get just before you kick the shit out of me.”

Brad glared at his brother and scoffed. “Evidently, I should have beaten you more often.” Okay, so he might have roughed up his punk-ass brother a time or two over the years, but it was only because Jonah had needed it. The boy was a damn fool sometimes, getting into messes that Brad had to clean up behind him.

“Yeah, well, that’s a matter of opinion,” Jonah said.

He held his brother’s gaze. “You got something to say?”

Jonah held his hands up and laughed. “Nope.”

Madison tapped on the window and Jonah jumped onto the sidewalk to let her climb into the middle. Without conscious thought Brad’s eyes roamed the sexy curves she always kept hidden behind those baggy clothes and icing-stained apron. Damned if he didn’t want to peel those loose-fitting work clothes from her body so he could touch and kiss her lush contours until she writhed beneath him and cried out his name.

As Madison slid in beside him, her duffle bag clutched to her chest, want pumped through his veins, the sudden, urgent need to help himself to a taste of her sweetness pulling at him hard. Fuck. He looked away, staring at some random woman walking her dog while he did his damnedest to ignore his raging hard-on.

“Here, give me that.” Jonah took the bag from her and tossed it into the truck bed with his.

Once he jumped back into the cab, Brad put the vehicle into gear, turned his attention to the road ahead and slipped into traffic. Jonah punched up the volume on the radio and hooked his left arm over the back of the seat, pulling Madison toward him.

Brad tried to focus on his driving, he really did, but with Madison’s leg rubbing up against his it took effort to stay on the road.

He drove through the downtown core, and when they passed a vacant building, a For Sale sign on the window, Jonah turned to Madison. “Maybe when I get back we can look for a new place to live.”

She looked at the building, and there was a hint of gloom in her voice when she said, “I can’t afford to rent an apartment and a business front, and it won’t be easy to find a place where I can live upstairs and turn the main level into Sweetie’s.”

Jonah curved his arm around her and pulled her in closer. As she rested her head on his shoulder, he brushed a light kiss over her hair. “Don’t worry. I’ll be making some good coin out on the road. It’ll go a long way in finding something nicer than we have now.”

Feeling like a third wheel, an eavesdropper listening in on a private, intimate conversation, Brad cast a glance their way. His gut clenched when he saw Madison smile up at Jonah. Hell, the two of them even talked like an old married couple. There was no missing how much his brother cared for her, which only solidified Brad’s vow to keep his distance where Madison was concerned.

Of course, she wasn’t the first girl Brad had walked away from because of his brother. Jonah was fun, wild and had a reputation with the ladies. As teens, a few of Brad’s girlfriends had gravitated toward his charismatic younger brother. Even though Brad wanted to beat the shit out of Jonah for taking his girl instead of doing the honorable thing and backing off, Brad always walked away. Blood was blood and no way would he allow a girl to come between him and his brother. How much could any of those girls have cared anyway, if they had no trouble leaving one brother for the other? Besides, he’d promised his dad that he’d take care of Jonah, and as a man of his word, he chose his family battles carefully. As long as Jonah treated the women properly, there’d be no trouble between brothers.

His thoughts careened back to a couple years ago, to the night he found his fiancée Jocelyn in bed with another man—doing the one thing he wouldn’t dream of asking her to do for him, considering she’d blatantly told him oral sex was disgusting and there wasn’t a girl in the world who enjoyed giving it. Although she enjoyed the hell out of it when he’d gone down on her, which he did frequently. Fuck, he wasn’t sure what hurt more, seeing her mouth wrapped around some douchebag’s cock, or realizing how stupid she thought he was when she starting spilling lies, telling him it wasn’t what he thought. Sure, whatever. Wouldn’t be the first time a woman had fallen and landed with a hard-on in her mouth and a pair of balls in her hand. Oh yeah, shit like that happened all the time.

He could have stayed and fought for her, but any girl who would sleep with another man and lie about it while her fiancé was overseas fighting for their country wasn’t worth the battle. And after seeing the same thing happen to a few of his comrades, he’d come to learn that long-distance relationships never worked. Since Brad’s work continued to take him out of state, he decided never to get himself in that kind of situation again. No, now he was into casual sex, no commitments.

“Besides,” Jonah said, “Brad can help us turn any space into a bakery. Right, bro?”

“Yeah, sure.” Brad looked at Madison, and when she turned her bright-eyed smile his way, his heart nearly stopped.

She ran paint-chipped nails along the deep hollow of her throat, and as he watched the movement his mouth watered, his tongue wanting to follow the path of her hands. Heat throbbed through him, and his cock thickened once again, aching to pound into her, hard hot strokes that would leave them both sated and breathless and would finally, finally, get her out of his head.

“And if something else goes wrong with the place while I’m away, Brad’s your man,” Jonah said.

As Brad pictured himself stepping in for his brother, his mind ran wild with one delicious idea after the other, and he forced himself to cough, hoping it would rattle some sense back into his lust-drunk brain.

“Isn’t that right, Brad?”

“Yeah.” He nodded. “I can help you out with anything you need.”

Something flitted across her face when she asked, “Anything?”

“Yeah, anything,” he assured her, but when she drew her bottom lip between her teeth, and her eyes glazed over like she had other things on her mind, he wondered if they were still talking about her run-down rental…or something else entirely.

Book Review, Cathryn Fox, His Trouble in Tallulah, In the Line of Duty

When faking it takes on a whole new meaning…

Tallulah Duncan is excited about her brother’s upcoming wedding in Louisiana, but what she’s not looking forward to is facing the man who will undoubtedly be waiting for her. Years ago she and an old boyfriend made a pact. The next time she comes home, if she’s still single, they’ll get engaged. He’s a nice guy, but Tallulah doesn’t love him—or the idea of being an undertaker’s wife. And the smokin’ hot guy next to her on the plane is a loud-and-clear reminder that her biological clock is on the fritz.

Security specialist Garrett Andersen is pretty sure the gorgeous woman next to him on the plane is about to have a panic attack. And when he tries to distract her, she does the most enchanting, adorable thing he’s ever seen. She blushes.  Since they’re headed to the same wedding, he finds himself agreeing to step into the role of adoring fiancé. In real life, she’s his comrade’s kid sister, so it’s hands off all the way. Except behind closed doors, her all-out campaign of sweet seduction is burning that strategy to ashes…

Warning: This book contains some very hot, very steamy sex, with a smokin’ hot security specialist who knows just how to hit his mark—and make it explode. Did we mention it was hot?

Once again I’ve jumped into a series after it started and once again I’m going to have to add more books to my TBR pile, because if book 1 is anything like Trouble in Tallulah I’ve definitely got to read it.

Tallulah has a yes man complex – she’s sweet and caring (perfect for a teacher) but she also has a hard time saying no and doesn’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings.  Which is why she finds herself agreeing to a sexy stranger’s suggestion that they pretend to be engaged, otherwise she’s going to end up unhappy as an undertaker’s wife.  Garrett may be attracted to Tallulah but, besides being his buddy’s sister, he believes she’s also too good for him.  He’s not anyone’s HEA … so why is his heart saying something different.

Forced together during the wedding weekend, their attraction quickly overpowers any good intentions about keeping things all business.  But it also gives them a chance to get to know each other better, to glimpse secret fears and longings, and to develop wants and hopes of their own.  And while Garrett helps Tallulah realize that speaking up for what she wants doesn’t mean that she’s being hurtful to someone else, she also starts him wanting something more than he ever has before.  But she may start being assertive, she has a long road ahead of her to show him the man she knows him to be.

They are not kidding when they say this one is hot, but it also has a good amount of heart to go with the steam.  While Tallulah and Garrett definitely have no problem setting fire to the sheets, they also get under each other’s skin.  Sweet, sassy and sexy as all get out, Trouble in Tallulah is a whole lot of fun.

Book Review, Cathryn Fox, Cowboy's Way

New review!

*****

Cover_Cowboy's Way - Cathryn Fox

Tired of the bachelor lifestyle, sports medicine doctor, and weekend cowboy, Chase Cooper, is ready to settle down. Late one night over a few drinks, he and his buddies come up with a plan. Invite the girls from their past-the ones that got away-to a weekend of fun at the ranch and see what happens next.

When lawyer, Julia Blair finds herself on a dude ranch half way across the country, only to discover the invitation was meant for her vivacious twin sister, she knows she has two choices. Go home alone, or walk a day in her sister’s shoes. When she sets eyes on sexy cowboy Chase Cooper, the choice becomes easy.

Coop can’t believe the mix up, but when he discovers Julia wants to play he decides to go for it. Except playtime leads to so much more and when he realizes she just might be the girl who got away he sets out to show her how good they can be together. And he’s not above using a set of leather horse reins and a few tricks of the trade to prevent her from fleeing again.

Ok, ya’ll, the insides are just as sexy as the outside! Cowboy’s Way is a quick, steamy read about second chances and is the first in what looks to be a hot hot hot series. I adored these two together – both had a thing for the other back in school but because Coop was best friends with Julia’s sister it meant she was off-limits. But now there is nothing stopping them from seeing where their attraction could go.

Fox does a great job of giving her readers appealing and engaging characters. Besides being unbelievably sexy, Coop is sweet, fun and charming. Julia is sexy but with that little tinge of uncertainty since she’s always found herself to be the less desirable sister. Once she lets her guard down, and accepts that Coop really wants her not her sister, the chemistry between the two proves to be quite fiery.

And I love the idea of this series – three guys that decide to go after the one that got away – and I’m super intrigued since we don’t get a lot of details about Coop’s friends. You can be sure that I’ll be keeping my eye out for the others to come out.

At under 100 pages, Cowboy’s Way might not be very big but it has a lot of passion and tenderness packed into that little bitty package. It’s the perfect book to take along when you think you might have a little extra time to read – it’ll go fast but be prepared to not want to put it down … and to be looking for more.

Book Review, Cathryn Fox, Hold Me Down Hard

Hold Me Down Hard is a sexy, short read guaranteed to heat up your day.  Eden Carver wants her sexy neighbor, and best friend, Jay Bennett, but he’s got her firmly placed in the friend category.  As a NYC cop, Jay sees a lot of bad things on the job and wants nothing more than to protect Eden.  Which definitely means that he can’t seduce the sweet Iowa farm girl, no matter how badly he wants to.  But when Eden’s friends talk her into seducing the sexy cop, all bets are off.

I really enjoyed this short story.  It’s only about 50 pages, but it packs a lot of spice into those pages.  Being so short we don’t get a lot of background, but Fox does a great job of packing as much as she can into the pages she has.  We learn that Eden isn’t as innocent as everyone thinks she is but the one time she let her kinky side out it ended badly.  Afraid that it will ruin everything if she lets Jay know how she really feels, she’s held back.  Jay also has rougher needs that he’s afraid will scare Eden.  Plus he is very dedicated to his job with the Gang Unit and thinks the danger may be more than Eden can handle.  But once they start communicating everything comes together.

The book doesn’t really explore their more kinky wants, they are mentioned but not actually acted upon.  At its heart, the story is more about getting past assumptions than it is about their darker side, which made the book that much more enjoyable to me.  Those assumptions could be about anything and makes the two so much more relatable.

If you are looking for a steamy read that you can fit into a hectic schedule, this bite-size treat is for you.  The characters are interesting and their issues are real, all of it contained in a tiny package.

Synopsis:  When Eden Carver, Iowa farm girl turned NY actress, decides to seduce the sexy cop next door, she begins to wonder if she’s bitten off more than she can chew.

The last thing Officer Jay Bennett wants is to cross a line with the sweet and innocent country girl—no matter how much he’d like to help himself to a nibble.  Not only are they in the friendship zone, a naïve girl like Eden doesn’t belong in his dangerous world.

But when she asks him to help her rehearse lines, and things go from simmer to boil, he finds himself doing the one thing he swore he’d never do.He knows he needs to walk away from temptation, but when sweet little Eden bites back, it tilts his world on its axis.

Because biting back changes everything.
